The Case of the Murder in Edinburgh
News of the Times Episode 375 | 1878
It is 1878 in Edinburgh and a young 24 old mother of 4 is dying.  Doctors are called and she is taken to hospital, but she never recovers.  Her husband, a native Frenchman, puts her death down to a gas leak, pointing out where he believes it has occurred in her bedroom. A medical examination takes place and it is clear she did not die from coal gas poisoning.  Her very distraught mother tells officials of the abusive treatment her daughter has received at the hands of her husband and the very large insurance policy he recently took out on her.  But, no poisons are found in her body… We take a look at this infamous crime that is said to have been the inspiration for the classic gothic novel, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
For crime and history buffs, we also take a look at the connection of the murderer with Arthur Conan Doyle and most likely the famous Dr Bell – purported inspiration for the character of Sherlock Holmes or Dr Watson, depending on your point of view. The Infamous Murder in Scotland in 1878 is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
We hope you enjoy the show!

Elliot Rodger was a 22-year-old involuntary celibate, also known as an incel. On May 23, 2014, he carried out a misogynistic terrorist attack. Elliot hated young men who were sexually active and/or were in relationships. He also hated young women for never dating him or having sex with him. Elliot decided to carry out a killing spree on the streets of Isla Vista, California as his revenge on college students. The young women, for not giving him a chance, and the young men who he blamed for “taking the girls away from him“ and experiencing the life he said he deserved.

Well it's been a minute since we've done a true crime review, so... Let's talk about Bondi Badlands from @sydneymorningherald and @theageaustralia . Bondi Badlands is an Australian True Crime limited series, and is part of my ongoing initiative to find English language podcasts from every country in the world. Australia being a pretty easy pull. Back in the 1980s and early 90s, gay men around Bondi Beach were dying, with police discounting their deaths as suicides, because...of course they did. These murders were only some of the gay hate crimes sweeping Sydney as the irrational hysteria of the AIDS epidemic fomented hate across the globe--and Australia was just one of the many places on the wrong side of history as far as LGBTQIA+ people were concerned. But when a popular TV news reader becomes a victim, they finally start investing, like they should have been all along. Being beaten and pushed off cliffs, there was someone, or someones, killing gay men in the Bondi area under cover of night. Over a decade later, the crime was finally solved. Who committed these heinous acts, and how was the case finally solved, you'll need to tune in to find out. That's 5, 30-40 minute episodes. So, if you like True Crime, esp. True Crime for a case that got solved, and investigative journalism, then Bondi Badlands is for you! #truecrime #crimepodcast #truecrimepodcast #solved #solvedtruecrime #truecrime #nonfictionpodcast #podcasts #podcast #podcastrecommendation #podcastrecommendations #recommendations #recommend #podcastsunday #trypod #australia #bondi #bondibeach #gay #gaypodcast #lgbtpodcast #lgbtqiaplus #lgbtq #sydneymorningherald #theage #bondibadlands #australiantruecrime https://www.instagram.com/p/CpJ8_ldOEw6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Across the month of December, I will be highlighting the various authors who have contributed to the show by sharing their writing. @dead_insane_or_in_jail has written a vital text. And even graced us with a follow up titled “Overwritten”. Zack’s memoir was my first written introduction to the Troubled Teen Industry and significantly changed the direction of the podcast and the content currently included in the back catalogue. For a comprehensive dive into the TTI and specifically CEDU - I can’t recommend this enough. The Curious Case of the Harvard Murder
News of the Times Episode 378 | 1849
It is 1849 at Harvard University and Professor John Webster is a man under pressure.  Possessing little financial abilities, and with a penchant for living well beyond his means, he has approached his good university friend, Dr Packman, for a loan. For security, he has offered his valuable minerals collection. Dr Packman, in financial matters, is quite the opposite of Professor Webster as his personal fortunes, through wise investments, continue to grow. However, Dr Packman is also strictly regulated.
When he discovers that his friend Professor Webster has gone to his brother-in-law for an additional loan, using the very same minerals collection as security, his anger knows no bounds.
Dr Packman begins to hound his former friend Professor Webster, increasing his demands, until finally, he manages to have Webster’s pay from the university appropriated to himself to pay the debt owed.  And then, surprisingly, the notoriously predictable Dr Packman vanishes. We take a look at this curious case of the Harvard murder from 1849.  For true crime buffs, do be sure to check out the end of the episode under our “further particulars” segment that gives some added information regarding similar cases.

🚨 New Podcast Episode
On September 16th, 2009, Mitrice Richardson was in jail for acting bizarrely in a restaurant in Malibu, not being able to pay for her food, and having less than an ounce of marijuana on her. As you get to know Mitrice through the episode, all of this was so out of character for her. It’s likely Mitrice was suffering with bipolar disorder but it crept up slowly through the years, barely detectable. That night, it’s believed she had a mental breakdown after not sleeping for five nights.
Her mother, Latice, called the station and said since her daughter would be at the jail until morning, she would come pick her up. Morning came sooner than expected. Mitrice was free to go from the station a little after 12AM on September 17th. Latice was not notified. Mitrice was in Malibu, a place she was not familiar with, 40 miles away from home. Her cellphone and purse were in her car, which they had towed off to a tow yard on the Pacific Coast Hwy.
After Mitrice left the police station, she walked off into the darkness, never to be seen alive again.
In regards to Mitrice’s disappearance and strange death, you might start to question everything…
