Leftovers & layout - WLED board revision A completed!
Sunday night, Babyada went to bed early, so we finished the capture and layout of our WLED board. Thanks to all the suggestions, we were able to implement quite a few!
For power, use USB C PD with switch-select or DC up to 24V; they are diode-OR'd together with PMEG3050
https://www.digikey.com/short/zv22b0pq
into a massive 5A 24V fuse
https://www.digikey.com/short/43qwwtwm
For the 5V regulator, we picked NCP718ASN500T1G
https://www.digikey.com/short/bb9ncc0n
- it's linear, but we don't need a lot of current at 5V. For 3.3V, we went with our trusty TPS54202
https://www.digikey.com/short/c1wnnf94
Upon request, we kept the ICS-43434 I2S microphone
https://www.digikey.com/short/28zwrrhz
and added an IR 38KHz receiver. For external connectivity, there's an ADC/DAC/GPIO #27 breakout on a JST SH 3-pin and I2C on a StemmaQT/Qwiic 4-pin.
We also added a 2x3 breakout header with 3V, GND, and 3 more GPIO so you could connect an external microphone, IR receiver, buttons, or rotary encoder. The terminal blocks have three 5V level-shifted outputs with 100 ohm in-line resistors and power/ground pairs for each. If you need just one more LED strand, the fourth 5V signal is on the 2x3 block.
Rounding out the design are four mounting holes, a reset button, GPIO #0 user button, GPIO LED, and an individual NeoPixel, which could be useful for testing. It's still pretty small, 2" x 1.3". With an ESP32-Mini module, we can pick a PCB or wFL antenna port, and it's an easy swap to make it use an ESP32-Pico, which has 2MB PSRAM.
Whatcha think - anything else we should add or watch out for?

Why Did the EU (and UK) Mandate USB-C?
The European Union introduced this law primarily for three reasons:
Reducing Electronic Waste (E-Waste) – By standardizing chargers, consumers wouldn’t need to buy a new charger for every device. This prevents millions of old chargers from ending up in landfills.
Consumer Convenience – A single charging standard means people don’t have to carry multiple cables and adapters for different devices.
Market Competition – Apple’s proprietary Lightning cable gave them control over accessories and forced consumers into their ecosystem. The law aims to break this kind of monopolistic control and allow more competition in the accessory market.
Positives of the Switch to USB-C
Universal Compatibility – iPhones now use the same cable as most Android phones, iPads, laptops, and other devices.
Faster Data Transfer and Charging – USB-C generally allows for higher power delivery and faster data speeds compared to Lightning.
Less E-Waste – Since USB-C is already widespread, fewer cables will be discarded.
More Accessory Choices – Third-party manufacturers no longer have to rely on Apple’s expensive MFi (Made for iPhone) licensing to make compatible cables.
Negatives of the Switch to USB-C
Short-Term Consumer Cost – People with existing Lightning accessories (chargers, docks, headphones) now have to replace them or buy adapters.
Potential for Confusion – Not all USB-C cables are equal. Some support fast charging and data transfer, while others do not, leading to possible frustration.
Loss of Apple’s Ecosystem Control – While good for consumers, this could mean fewer Apple-certified accessories with guaranteed quality.
Resistance to Government Regulation – Some tech companies, including Apple, argue that governments forcing a standard could slow innovation.
Apple’s Response
Apple was resistant to this change but ultimately complied, starting with the iPhone 15 lineup in 2023. They argued that forcing a universal standard could stifle innovation, but in reality, USB-C is already widely adopted.

USB C plug breakout prototype testing
We finally got our USB C plug breakout prototypes put together and now its time to test! of course we love to use our own breakouts when verifying functionality so here we're using our switchable USB adapter to check functionality: power, ground, D+ and D-. if a device enumerates we know its good! we tested the CC line by plugging it into an apple wall adapter: they're picky about having a 5.1K resistor on the CC pin. that worked too - so now we're good to book final PCBs.

Should You Use HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C for a 4K Monitor?
HDMI 2.1 is a solid all-rounder with support for 4K at 120Hz, or 8K at 60Hz. HDMI 2.0b is a solid choice for 4K 60Hz, too, and is available on most cheaper monitors.
DisplayPort 2.1 offers up to 80Gbps throughput and daisy-chaining support but is limited to PC and monitors (no TVs), plus most GPUs and monitors in the wild will still be using the slower DisplayPort 1.4 standard (comparable to HDMI 2.0, but worse than HDMI 2.1).
USB-C is convenient for laptops that support DisplayPort Alt Mode and offer power delivery, while Thunderbolt is great for daisy-chaining and Mac users at a premium price point.

Apple iPhone SE 4: Affordable iPhone With Powerful Upgrades

In terms of appearance and functionality, the next Apple iPhone SE 4 is expected to represent a significant improvement over earlier SE models, more in line with newer iPhone models. The smaller 4.7-inch LCD screen on the current SE model will be replaced by a 6.1-inch OLED screen, akin to the iPhone 14‘s screen, in the SE 4, which is anticipated to make its debut in late 2024 or early 2025. With its thinner bezels, Face ID, and perhaps a notch or even a Dynamic Island, this design change suggests that the SE 4 may mirror the iPhone 14’s body.
According to recent models, Apple is also heading toward a USB-C port for this gadget, which would comply with revisions in EU regulations. Rumor has claimed that it might also have an Action Button, which is an option from the iPhone 15 series that takes the place of the conventional mute switch. A single-lens back camera with a 12MP sensor and features like Deep Fusion, Smart HDR, and potentially Cinematic Mode though Night Mode might not be included is anticipated to be part of the SE 4’s camera front.
In keeping with Apple’s practice of increasing processing power across its portfolio, the Apple iPhone SE 4 might be powered inside by an upgraded Apple silicon chip, perhaps the A17 Bionic or even the A18. Given that Apple is said to be equipping this phone with a somewhat larger battery than the previous SE, which would lengthen usage on a single charge, this should result in increased performance and efficiency.
Because of the improvements to its feature set, the SE 4 is expected to cost more than its predecessors, possibly making it a competitive mid-tier choice in Apple’s portfolio. To cater to customers looking for affordability in addition of the Apple experience, the pricing will probably stay lower than flagship models given Apple’s history with the SE range.
According to these observations, the Apple iPhone SE 4 will undergo a major overhaul, increasing its attractiveness to consumers who prefer small but powerful gadgets, particularly those seeking an affordable iPhone with contemporary features.
FAQs
Will the iPhone SE 4 have a physical home button?
No, it is rumored that the Apple iPhone SE 4 will use a notched design, most likely inspired by the iPhone 14. This would signal a change in design toward a full-screen experience with Face ID rather than Touch ID, and the death of the home button for the SE series.
What storage options will the iPhone SE 4 offer?
The iPhone SE 4 is rumored to have at least two storage options, with 128GB and maybe 512GB being the beginning capacities. A 64GB base model is also being rumored, though it is less certain.
Will the iPhone SE 4 support 5G?
There is a good probability that the Apple iPhone SE 4 will have 5G capabilities because Apple has been including 5G technology into its latest models.”
What processor will the iPhone SE 4 use?
The A18 Bionic chip, which is also utilized in the iPhone 14, is probably going to be included in the iPhone SE 4. This will make it competitive in the mid-range market by offering enough processing power for daily chores and light gaming.
Apple SE 4 price
Leaks and reports suggest the Apple iPhone SE 4 will cost $499–$549. The iPhone SE 3 started at $429, so this is a big price rise. However, these are estimates, and the final pricing may vary.
Apple SE 4 release date
Although a release date has not been confirmed, many analysts believe the iPhone SE 4 will launch in late 2024 or early 2025.
