I feel like BFRB’s are REALLY common despite being so stigmatized, and I wanted to see how many of you are out there :)

Who’s your favourite oc? And what makes them your fav?
Matillo! I've drawn him the most, he always has different hair and such but he's always him in my brain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was originally a vent character I drew that was the embodiment of my struggle with trich/dermatillomania (symbolized in his fingertips and scars on his shoulders, his hair in most drawings is not his own) He's a betrayed man who refuses himself to be close to anyone again, undying, a bit of a monster. He wallows in his own pain and suffering and it's definitely to avoid being vulnerable addressing any of it. He's basically my one bad boy. I mean monster kind of literally, he's kind of like a Cronenberg monster. His flesh can flay itself, unfurl and consume other organisms. He's my favorite because he comes from my really raw, angry, worst years of my life and is a good reminder in a way of how far I've come! He's my safe spot to put all my anger from trauma into. He'll be happy again someday, I've been thinking of this recently.

Shoutout to people with trichotillomania. People with bald spots. People with patchy or no eyebrows. People with thin or no lashes. People with sores on their faces, their scalps, their legs, their arms, or everywhere. People who pull consciously, subconsciously, or both. People who can't swim or wear certain clothes because of trichotillomania. People whose trichotillomania causes them pain. People's whose trichotillomania doesn't. People who pull 24/7, people who don't or barely pull anymore. People who want to get better and people who don't. People who visibly have it and people who don't. People who are open about their trichotillomania, and people who aren't. You're doing amazing however you handle it. You are beautiful regardless of your hair and how you feel about it. You are beautiful regardless your urges. You are beautiful and worthy of love. I'm proud of you.

Something I feel like is not talked about enough with bfrb’s(especially ones that involve tensing muscles for a while like skin-picking or trich) is the muscle aches from sitting tensed up in one specific position for fucking ages.

"Trichotillomania isn’t just pulling hair—it’s a complex response to stress, emotion, or even boredom. Healing starts with compassion and small steps toward understanding the patterns behind the urge." ______ The Trichotillomania Workbook !

I may have talked about trichotillomania
before but...here it is again. So I have trichotillomania! It's a hair pulling disorder, with the name meaning "hair pulling madness". It means exactly what it says on the tin; I pull my hair out.
Not just the hair on my head, but various other areas where body hair grows. Eyelashes, eyebrows, chin hairs, leg hairs, etc.
It's a body focused repetitive disorder, or BFRD, meaning it's an impulse controlled behavior involving compulsively damaging one's physical appearance or causing physical injury.
I am not an expert on this disorder, I merely live with it, but I hope to provide insight on the subject matter. So don't beat yourself up for not knowing anything about this.
BFRD is often linked to those with OCD, or in the OCD spectrum.
This…started becoming a thing when I was a teenager. So for a majority of my teenagehood, I had my head shaved OR had very very short hair.
well! For the past couple of years, largely because I've been enrolled into a mental health group program since march of 2023, my hair…has grown longer than it has ever been! And I'm very proud of how far it's come. I get lots of compliments on it.
This is because having a trustworthy community, let alone one with the primary focus being the mental wellness of people, is SO important for recovery. If you can't lean on anyone, it makes you feel awful.
