The Sensorium!

Maybe this is just full on speculation but thank GOD Helmut’s a hippie dude because otherwise I think Raz would be seeing The Horrors of being hyper aware of your body’s functions very intimately.

Not to get too personal on tumblr, but as someone who has a physical condition that makes me hyper aware of a lot of my bodily functions, I applaud Helmut for not going full Lovecraft in his head (because I totally would), and while it’s most definitely trippy, I -and presumably others- won’t be afraid of what we find.

The art-style in this level is particularly worth talking about, because the cel-shading is a super interesting choice. I theorize that Helmut’s brain is going through a whole lot of transition at the moment, which the cel-shading represents, due to that particular coloring style being intended to make a non-flat object appear flat through the use of a lack of gradients and less colors.

(‘Less colors? Helmut? Oiler, you must be talking crazy!’ Is probably what you’re thinking, but I promise I have a point.)

My apologies for referencing Flatland without warning in a Psychonauts post, but I believe Helmut’s transitioning up through the dimensions of perception gradually so as not to overwhelm himself entirely, and that’s why the world takes on a slightly 2D appearance in some aspects with less colors.

Maybe I’m talking crazy but it makes perfect sense in my head.

Also, the anaglyph effect? The thing where it looks like objects at a distance are overlayed with red and cyan and looks like how it feels to have an astigmatism while driving at night in a town overtaken by the parasite of LED headlights? Masterful. I suspect that Helmut’s re-acquaintance with his senses and dimensions of perception plays a big part in this, because this is directly intended to give the opposite effect that cel-shading is intended for. Cel-shading is to make 3D objects look 2D, and Anaglyph is to make 2D objects look 3D.

I think that this represents Helmut’s re-integration into navigating the world that isn’t just a dark and quiet place, but honestly it’s totally up to interpretation, this is just my interpretation.

I do want to talk eventually about Helmut’s cosmic oneness (as iterated in his —Jack Black’s— jam at the end of the level) and I totally have much more to say about the sensorium but I feel bad making you guys read insane amounts of me just rambling about perception and reality and such and so.

However! I am also using this post to hereby summon y’all to actually talk to me about Psychonauts. If there’s anything you’d like me to speak on, make me aware of it! I promise, I don’t bite!

Behind F1's Velvet Curtain

This article by Kate Wagner on her INEOS sponsored trip to the Austin GP at COTA last year was commissioned by Road and Track magazine and then taken down. Presumably because Kate has was pretty staunch in her opinions about what was essentially a paid trip.

It is exactly the kind of thing I have wanted to read about the felt experience of the money business of F1. It doesn't get into technicalities and does not produce any spreadsheets for reference. It's just, her experience of the presence of wealth in the sport.

She starts off by talking about how she has been covering cycling and NASCAR for a while now and both of those, in comparison, are scrappier sports with smaller sponsors and cheaper tickets.

What I also especially loved was how fascinated she was with the cars themselves, and how they seem like a true marvel of human engineering. She almost described the cars like these alien beasts that came into this dimension out of nowhere and were being constantly monitored and dueled with to furnish wins and glory (and shareholder value for sponsors).

I think I always had an understanding of the weird myth making surrounding F1 and the kind of media attention it attracts, but someone like Kate (who I have loved reading for a while now) putting it into perspective really made it click for me. This sport thrives off of the kind of cocoon it has built around it and understands exactly the certain exclusiveness it needs to maintain to keep the story alive.

Anyway, give it a read, especially because Road and Track is trying to bury it to not piss off sponsors.

5: what sports do you play/have you played? (Europeans close your eyes…) Soccer and ballet mostly. I also did lightweight women’s 8 rowing in uni.

6. what's the first thing you notice about other people? Day to day - their eyes and/or their smile. At work - signs of distress/pain.

7: scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings all day and every day.

8: any special talents? Nope, just good at knowing when I’m mediocre at many things and decent (but require work) at a few things - and then trying to focus on the few. 🤣

10: what are your hobbies? Writing, spending time with my husband and puppy, and F1 unfortunately.
