They were halfway there. The Trial of the Grasses was done, and soon those that were left would undertake the Trial of the Medallion. Voltehre was alive and so was Lambert, Remus and Aja. But the death toll had been high. There had to be a better way.

For the WIP Folder game, what's "begone to the witchers"?

An AU which diverges from canon when Lambert and Voltehre go through their Medallion Trial!

“Welcome to Kaer Morhen. I’m Voltehre; I have the honor to lead this School.” His voice is deep and rich and smooth. Milena curtsies deeply, as she might to a duke. “I am Milena, until recently de Roggeven, and I have come to offer my services to the Wolf School.” Voltehre’s eyebrows go up. “Until recently?” “Well, I expect my father has disowned me, since I chose to come here rather than taking the marriage he had arranged for me.” Voltehre tilts his head, regarding her curiously. “So you are not here in repayment of a witcher saving your life?” “I am not,” Milena confirms. “That’s…unusual,” Voltehre says slowly. “Pretty much unheard of, in fact.”

So Jinzee's video about the trailer brought me to a realization, it's kinda neat that Ciri has an association with the cat school in the light of this new direction.

Everyone is still screaming crying throwing up that Ciri having undergone the grasses is way too lore breaking but here's the counter argument again; her entire plot in the books is about her and only her getting to decide what to do with her life and with her body.

And not to get derailed too much but diverging from what Sapek or even cdpr themselves said before doesn't have to be a bad thing. Think about Thronebreaker - it's a great adaptation of Baptism despite not literally having the same storyline or the same characters because it's ultimately about the same things, a perilous journey to save what you care about the most, familial relationships and a family-like unit brought together by circumstance, how much war sucks. I think this new game is going to be about autonomy, something looming over Ciri's entire book arc. And again, it's okay to "break lore" in service of a good, meaningful story that still carries the spirit of what Sapek was trying to say; the witcher books certainly aren't about "adult women can't be turned into witchers", they are about, among other things, family, abuse, and making choices.

Jinzee in her video proposes that perhaps the lynx school is going to be a group of people who choose whether to undergo (likely altered/adjusted, re: the future potential of Uma's uncursing) mutations and that made me think about Gezras and the story of the cat school in gwent. Because it doesn't appear in the ttrpg it seems it was written specifically for gwent by the mysterious lorekeeper, so it is cdpr approved at least. I talked about Gezras quite a bit already (here, under Thaler) and concluded that his and the cat school's story is beside revenge about reclaiming the trial as something that gives mistreated people means to protect themselves. Autonomy and even ability to choose. It's not perfect in the cats' case, not at all, these are back alley mutations that leave them fucked up forever, but the concept is not unheard of.

I don't think Ciri would have forced anyone into it. The lack of much of a choice (Geralt does talk about choice being a factor in the trial but is it a real one when you're a literal child given up by your caretakers) is what makes it an abuse cycle and she's had enough experience with abuse - and with falling into a spiral where she becomes a perpetrator - to avoid doing it again (she also has an on-page mini arc of getting out of that spiral, with Vysogota, but it would be interesting if the game explored her history, especially the years spent in the Arthurian world). Maybe her mutation will be a one-off like i initially thought, but if not, choice is a word already attached to her by the game director and indirectly by the trailer itself. That girl's autonomy is a point in it too. She believes she has to sacrifice herself but only because she's been told as much by people around her. In that sense it's personal for Ciri, and probably why it's the plot of her first trailer to begin with.

And i guess the best closing words i can muster is that it also is just that, a first trailer - we don't know the plot of the game and can only speculate what it's going to be about and how it's going to explain the trial and even the medallion for that matter. Not to have expectations too high because cdpr is definitely prone to comically wasting their potential, but so far it's really not looking bad. The ground for good storytelling and even apt political commentary is there, we will have to wait to see if they walk it.

A lot of unnecessary banter from "fans" clogging up Witcher 4 posts when we should just be excited and enjoying trailer edits and fanart. It's tiring, but every complaint has a logical answer, there's no "ah-haa" moment in any of these complaints.

"Ciri can't be a witcher." Except she's called precisely that in the books and in the... Witcher Ciri ending of Witcher 3. Which the entirely of the game's plot suggested (I understand there's alternative endings, but the game's logical flow goes to Witcher Ciri ending). Ciri is a playable character in Witcher 3 alongside Geralt. She is in every way Geralt's daughter, apprentice and heir to his profession. This is a classic "did you not play the game/read the books?" response and I don't know who, with any bare-minimum inkling of the lore, would say this with any seriousness.

"She couldn't have gone through the trial of grasses." Her going through the trial is clearly new Witcher 4 lore, but it's not an unreasonable route. The reason Geralt was a "super" witcher was that he was able to take on more mutations for his trial because he is the son of a sorceress, which isn't supposed to happen as sorceresses can't conceive children (this due to their bodies undergoing changes when becoming disciplined in magic, not some sacrificial ritual that the show suggested). Ciri's bloodline is not just a sorceress bloodline, but the Elder Blood/Lara Dorren bloodline which is so coveted for it's magic prowess, it... was a central aspect in the books and Witcher 3 plot. It is reasonable to assume that she would survive the trial of grasses should she elect to pursue it, which she clearly did.

"She's OP." Trust that CDPR will write to accommodate this? From the trailer, it seemed clear that Ciri had to resource manage her Lara gene. She wasn't teleporting at all, we saw the classic green magic associated with it, and she chose to channel it into a lightning spell. I think that's a great balance. Besides, who wouldn't wouldn't want to play as a combo witcher and sorceress, do you hate fun? lmao.

"I can't play cause Ciri is a woman and I need the protagonist to be a man to relate to them." Skill issue, honestly. I understand the feeling of playing a character that is your gender identity (I am excited to play Ciri for this), but I've played plenty of games as a man and the narrative experiences are still enjoyable and worthwhile, Geralt being no exception. Literally my two guy friends who are the biggest into Witcher, read the books and played the games with me, cite Ciri as both their personal favorite character and are so stoked she's taking the lead in Witcher 4. People with any attachment to Geralt as a character should feel naturally excited his/your daughter is taking up the mantle.

"She is ugly." Incorrect. She looks older, mature and beautiful all in one. This makes her look different from her younger Witcher 3 self, yes (as we should expect?), and in all the best ways. I'm sorry you hate attractive women, that is a personal problem and I wish you future clarity.

"She better not be gay/woke." She already is. The Witcher already was. Even without the books, there is a direct dialogue choice as Ciri where you can specify a preference in women (referencing her girlfriend from the books). The game will likely write her as bi and let the player choose, so sit down and quit crying.

Edit for one more I saw: "She has a School of the Cat medallion, that's wrong!" She's had it since the books, it was a pivotal moment and big spoiler how she got it, but it hung from her belt in her Witcher 3 designs. She just wears it on her neck now.

Witchers always seem so unfazed no matter what they see or experience on the path. It's what leads people to believe they emotionless.

That's not true. They've just suffered so much worse, and seen unspeakable horrors already in their childhood, so they aren't shocked.

I put examples under the cut, but they are potentially triggering

Seeing a dead bloody body? 7 out of 10 boys don't survive the trials. Many of them were their friends.

Being attacked by bandits or angry farmers? Part of training was to be able to fight off several opponents, and they did not show mercy or hesitation no matter how young the trainee was

Eating disgusting food thats been served to him? At least they aren't fighting off another (also starving) boy for these scraps.

Verbal insults? Do you honestly think the trainers were gentle? Please be more creative with your insults

Being forced to sleep in the barn with the animals? Warmer than a cave atop a mountain where you are trying to survive a trial so you can earn your medallion

Hissing and Scratching

You were a brand new addition to the smiling critters, a sneaky fox who was already so quickly loved and adored by everyone. Well… almost everyone.

A certain feline wasn't a big fan of you, honestly he didn't seem to be a big fan of anyone. But you seemed to be set on gaining that cat's favor and affections so it became your mission. Day after day, you'd leave gifts for him or you'd follow him around while rambling with no response besides a few grumbles.

He was a tough nut to crack, and actually, he started to avoid you. Seems like all the pestering made him hate you rather than just having a mere dislike for you.

You slowly walked up behind him, keeping some distance but just enough to where you could still see him close enough and he could hear you. You slowly held one paw out and leaned over a bit. “Pspspsps…” You had attempted to lure him over, getting a glance from Catnap. A rather annoyed glance as his tail started to give warning thumps against the ground.

You slowly approached, paw still out and your body still fucked forward as your fluffy tail swayed and your large ears twitched. Medallion hanging from your neck and off your chest. “C'mere kitty kitty…” You cooed, getting even closer. His ears fell flat as he let out a low growl before he hissed at you, which should've been your first warning. But you kept trying.

“Come here kitty ki- OW!” You hissed and yanked your body up, cradling your arm to your chest. You slowly pulled it away and looked at the fresh scratch on your arm that blood was slowly trickling out from Catnap, shocked that he had actually scratched you. You slowly look at Catnap after a few minutes, only to see him do a stretch before walking off with his tail swaying behind him as if he had done no wrong.

Just a bit of trial and error, is all.

guys what are we thinking is the lore behind that potion ciri downed in the trailer for tw4?? because she can't have actual witcher potions but clearly that seemed to give her some sort of powerup

EDIT: hold on did she have cat eyes in the trailer?? is she a witcher?? like, went-through-the-trial-of-the-grasses witcher?? the potion didn't black out her eyes but rather made them glow, although the tendrils/toxicity was there.

her medallion also looked different to geralt's, no? is she a witcher but not a wolf witcher, and her potions are different? or is the difference in potion effect due to her being a woman or her also having magic? CD PROJEKT RED ANSWER ME

Link, poor guy. Man needs help okay.

This map is interesting, I reckon is a list of the first three heroes we meet.

That top one is Skyloft. With Hylia and the floating island. - For Sky. who we met first.

The middle one has someone holding The double helix sword... That's the fierce deity on the middle level. We know Time has a connection to the Fierce deity mask. And in turn the deity himself. So this middle level is Time.

And that lower one.

If im right, This is the Twilight realm, and we will find ourselves there soon. The people look similar to the 'Link' we see on the land level to an extent while still holding a semblance of individuality.

Its almost, inverted? Like the twilight people were. Rather than looking different different.

I'm excited to see where this goes.

So I'm a sucker for visual storytelling in backgrounds and I think this might be more than an exploration into the depths beneath the ice.

Starting with this.

I think this, is Time being vulnerable.

The break from a cold icy exterior to something a little more personal.

Funny how when Time begins to see more personal stuff, he has more visions of the past.

The trigger has him almost scared, just look at him.

Why would Time be scared, if he didn't care?

Time appears to carry a lot of guilt around Twilight.

And when Link calls him out on it, he returns to that icy exterior, not allowing himself the opportunity to be vulnerable again.

And I wonder if that has to be explored before he can take his place within the medallion. Trials by fire, as they are so suitably called, can be for the spirits as much as Link.

Just a thought tho.

Hello, I really love your art!

I know you made this a while ago, but I was wondering if you had any lore/headcanons about the orv witch/witch hunter au you made

I do!!!! I had a lot of comments or interesting ideas in the tags, and some of them were really inspiring. Here is an long and disparate list of my headcanons for that AU:

So in this AU, magic only works if you have an object/animal (not recommended because difficult to control) as a magic catalyst. It doesn't have to be near the witch, but the source should exist. If it is destroyed, they can't use magic until they accumulate magic and choose another catalyst with a complicated and long ritual. Could take years. Most of the time, witches hide it or keep it with them, so it's often an object they really like.

After many trials, Yjh thought it was the book because he realised kdj loved to read and always had that book with him.

Too bad, it was all kdj's trap. The reason kdj chose yjh's medallion as his magic catalyst is because he knows yjh will never find out but also because he thinks yjh is invincible. To destroy that medallion, he would have to be beaten, and kdj can't conceive such a thing.

Hsy is also a witch, and ysa is the hunter that goes the most after her, but unlike joongdok, they became friends at some point and are actually collaborating a lot. When they meet, they either fight for fun or go eat crepes together. They also share intel.

As for joongdok, they fight for real every time they meet. But there also are common ennemies of both witches and hunters, like monsters, bad sorcerers or constellations (=patrons of magic here).

During a fight between yjh and a very strong constellation, yjh seems to have a hard time. Kdj is watching from afar but doesn't want to interfere because he didn't originally plan to fight that constellation now. At one point, the constellation attacks yjh and he's definitely going to hit him right on his chest (where the medallion is), so kdj HAS to come and defend yjh so his magic catalyst doesn't get destroyed. OF COURSE yjh is very confused and still has no idea it's because of the medallion so he's like "why are you saving me?". And OF COURSE kdj isn't going to spill the beans so he doesn't say anything and just smiles at yjh. In the end they fight the constellation together and kdj slips away after the fight.

After that yjh is even more relentless in hunting kdj but when he finds an object that might be his catalyst, he just takes it with him instead of destroying it (he still pins kdj with his sword and menacingly asks him if it's the right object but kdj never says).

They fight together against constellations and nebulas more and more.

Good things never last and during a BIG FIGHT against a nebula, yjh's medallion gets destroyed and kdj ends up powerless in the middle of the fight. Yjh notices it and put 2 and 2 together, but it's too late, the constellation is aiming for kdj and it's going to fast. With one last smile, kdj is hit, falls, and magically crumbles away, in front of yjh and all of kimcom.

BUT NO ONE KNOWS THAT HE'S BECOMING A CONSTELLATION HIMSELF HA HA HA. He indeed met all the criteria to become a patron of magic himself.

That's it, I haven't thought any further.

This one’s a bit vague when it comes to being a prompt fill but I LIKE it so who CARES. I TOLD you I would maybe write Traitor but from Tomás’ perspective and I DID it. (Traitor is a historical two-shot that you can find on my masterlist!)

Whumptober Day Eight: Hero

In the heat of the moment, there had been anger. Anger, and fear, and the racing heartbeat that told him he had to survive, he had to fight, he had to win this because it was more than just his own life if he lost.

And he had won. He had won, and now the anger and adrenaline had faded.

Tomás couldn't name what he was feeling now. He had the governor's son in the dust at his feet, and he had thought this moment would feel triumphant but it just felt...numb. He had a sword in his hand that didn't feel like it belonged there.

My father's sword. At the throat of his murderer's son.

Mateo Rivera had changed since Tomás and his mother had been exiled. He was taller, leaner, all sharp edges. He was dressed like royalty, in a gold jacket and black shirt and a beautiful turquoise medallion, at odds with the villagers in their faded finery and clay beads. His eyes blazed hatred in a way they hadn't when the two of them were children. He was fierce and angry. But Tomás was stronger, and better with a sword.

"Tomás!" Fidelia's voice. She ran to him, and he held her close, relieved that she was there. Fidelia had been the one to fetch him from the desert, to spur him on to fight the governor, and then to fight his son. Tomás knew little for certain anymore- everything kept changing so quickly- but he knew that he loved her. And she had kissed him at the feast, so he was reasonably sure she loved him back.

He kissed her again now, careful not to lose his grip on the sword. And then he turned back to his enemy. "It's over," he announced, pitching his voice so the entire crowd could hear. "You've lost, Rivera." It was meant for the whole family of them, though he directed it at the son.

The villagers burst into life, cheers rising to a deafening pitch. "What now, Tomás?" a shopkeeper called out. "What do we do with these traitors?"

Why are you asking me? Tomás thought blankly.

It must have shown on his face, for the baker spoke next. "You're the hero of this village. Whatever you think is best, we'll do."

The governor, of course, said something insulting. Tomás barely heard it. Am I truly their hero? Is this decision really mine to make?

A farmer, grinning, said "We have rope handy. We could have all three strung up before sundown."

Tomás turned on him. "I am not Governor Rivera," he replied sternly. "There will be justice on the governor and his wife, but not without a fair trial. Is that agreeable to you?”

"We trust you, Tomás," someone else promised.

Tomás breathed out hard. Why is this so difficult? "Good. Then you can take former Governor Rivera and his wife to-"

"Wait a minute!" broke in another shopkeeper. "I can wait to watch the ex-governor pay his dues, but the boy tried to steal away Fidelia. He’s drawn your blood, Tomás." There was a cut in Tomás' arm, staining the sleeve of his shirt. He hadn't even noticed. Fidelia was there in moments, pressing a handkerchief against it.

"Our beautiful Fidelia was nearly forced to be the bride of the governor’s brat," added one of the women. "Surely that deserves punishment here and now.”

Tomás' heart pounded. What are they expecting me to do? Kill him?

A death in the midst of a swordfight would have been different. But a cold-blooded murder- an execution- Tomás couldn't do that. He couldn't.

Fidelia stood on her toes to whisper in his ear. "Tomás...I don't want to see him die. Can't you do something? There has to be something that will satisfy them."

Think of something! Tomás told himself. An idea came to mind- it was harsh, but it would appease them. He hoped.

He raised his voice again, tried to make it sound like his father's voice had sounded once, before it was silenced by the governor’s sword. "Townspeople!" he called out. "The Rivera family has failed you! They had a chance to be good, selfless rulers. Instead they overtaxed you, stole anything of value you possessed, and nearly drove this place into a famine. Were it not for Fidelia’s brave journey into the desert to bring me my father’s sword, this village might have been choked to death in the grip of the Rivera family. They are traitors! And while the former governor and his wife will face their own judgment for their crimes, their son will be marked as a traitor here and now.”

He met Mateo's eyes beyond the sword point. If there was fear there, he hid it well.

"Will you struggle?" Tomás asked. He needed to know. If Mateo fought him, Tomás could very well end up stabbing him in the heart.

Tomás had seen enough people run through with a sword.

Mateo glared up at him almost scornfully. "No."

Tomás steeled himself, cutting away the shirt and jacket and medallion first. Mateo, true to his word, held still. Tomás gritted his teeth as he cut into the younger man's chest, writing a symbol with blood as his ink. He cut deep enough to scar, but no more.

Then he pulled Mateo up and out into the circle of villagers so they could all see what he had done.

He'd carved the letter T- the symbol for a traitor- into Mateo's chest.

There were murmurs of approval from the townspeople. The governor looked murderously angry. His wife was very pale, although she kept her head high and said nothing.

Tomás stood there in the middle of them all with a bloody sword in his hand, unsure of what to do or say next. He stared at the drops of red blood in the dust. Am I a hero now? he thought to himself, and did not know the answer.

Are any of the following characters one(s) you consider underrated in the fandom?

Luka, Steph, Raven, & Terry McGinnis were the most underrated! (We need more Batman Beyond, let's be honest) Wally was the runner up! Alix, Selina Kyle, Constantine, & Billy Batson were all brought up as well. There's one other character but they will be mentioned after the next question. This is good list for those wondering what characters to try using in their pieces!

Are any of the following characters one(s) you consider overrated in the fandom?

Zoe was by far the most overrated. Damian came in close second. Batman, not Bruce, lead the bottom. Joker & Scarecrow got mentions as well because of how overused they are. Now... the character was included in both was Chloe. This a character that feels to be simply Rated not Over or Under.

Finally, if you had the power to choose the ship that established the fandom, what would you pick?

Daminette still took the most the ship to establish the fandom! However... Timari, Alley Cat & Marave all tied as a runner up with only a vote separating them from tying with Daminette! Dickinette had a single vote. Sadly, no Jasonette lovers participated as no one seemed to think it should have established the fandom.

HELLO I'M BACK ON MY AU BULLSHIT

Witcher!Jaskier might just be the most fucked up experiment in Witcher history. Those fucked-in-the-head mages decided they wanted to see what would happen if you took a mutated Cat Witcher kid and then mutate them again with the Viper methods. Somehow Jaskier (Julian) survived it so now he's double mutated, part Cat and part Viper. Arguably the two most fucked up of the schools.

Perhaps he's just the normal level of crazy, maybe double, or maybe in some cosmic joke or other the two crazies cancelled each other out.

His abilities and senses are either matched or are better than Geralt's. Maybe his hair is all white too or there are just a few strands of brown hair that clung on.

Jaskier is very much both a Cat and a Viper Witcher. He's gone through both of their training and trials. He's done some awful things for coin and he, as witchers do, hates himself for them.

He melted down his cat and viper medallions and with it made a Sabertooth Tiger headed medallion for himself.
