Hello sorry if this is a bother but I am asking in good faith where is the reading for transmasc nepeta. I’m asking this cuz of your last ask (the June one) and I see aradia Dirk and Jane. Thoes all I have seen post and analysis about. But I have not really seen anything about nepeta.

Okay so first thing you gotta understand is that gender in Homestuck, for lack of a better way to say it, can be understood in how characters reflect and relate to each other. That being said to understand Nepeta's gender, we gotta understand the gender of at the very least one other person.

Dave.

And more specifically.

Davepeta, Homestuck's very own first(ish) trans character.

Davepeta is noted to be a sort of platonic ideal of existence for both Dave and Nepeta. Somehow, through a strange series of cosmic coincidences, these two end up making an odd sort of parallel. Both having a strange relationship to a man who loves him some goddamn horses. The whole Akwete Purrmusk thing. I mean, Dave canonically engaged in semi-nonironic furry roleplay with Nepeta offscreen, and given what we know about what becoming a furry in Homestuck means, it's not a leap to describe this as their ideal form.

But, although we don't see a lot of Nepeta's character arc, we do see a lot of Dave's. He struggles his whole life under an incredibly oppressive masculine force (both of Bro and, indirectly, Lord English), and once the game is over ends up deconstructing and largely rejecting that.

So when Davesprite, who's also probably been thinking about this for even longer, bereft of purpose or identity, finds a kindred soul in a spunky catgirl... well the rest is Davepeta.

And similarly, there are points in the story where Nepeta acts kind of uncomfortable with how others see her as exclusively something to be protected. The whole "Dear, sweet, precious Nepeta" grates on her early on, as Equius uses it as an excuse to control her actions. The whole of moiraillegience as it is originally explained (i.e. one party helps to calm down an especially brutal and violent person from outbursts of anger, and in turn that person will protect the more docile, even-tempered soul from external harm) even kind of FEELS like the way heterosexual relationships are portrayed in a lot of conservative spaces, where women are nuturers and caretakers while men are protectors. And Nepeta is supposed to, in this situation, be the person who helps Equius manage his emotions, which she feels some consternation at!

Now, over the course of Hivebent, their relationship appears to evolve and get a bit more balanced, but it still carries these overtones of "I will protect you, and you will handle my outbursts." Notably, when Equius goes to seek the Highb100d, and leaves Nepeta behind.

And of course not after roleplaying as each other.

Which. I mean come on.

But notably, Nepeta doesn't just stay put! She doesn't really want to be protected all the time! And when push comes to shove, she leaps out to defend, or at the very least avenge, her best friend.

And then, we don't really see Nepeta for a while!

Until we get to the end of the comic.

During their whole "date", Nepeta seems a little uncomfortable with Jasprose's affections. She may be a bit flattered, but Jasprose also fully admits later that she was frankly looking for any girl she could fall in love with after the tragic death of her girlfriend and possible more tragic untimely resurrection.

But then the pivotal handshake happens, and we get to see who is perhaps the most happy being in all of Homestuck.

Then we get into some of the only actual discussion of gender in Homestuck. We don't get much besides that, for both of their lives, Dave and Nepeta both felt something was missing. Something felt wrong that they couldn't quite place that made them both miserable. I don't think it's a massive stretch to say this could be gender dysphoria.

And when they combine, they feel the fullness of the gendered experience they were missing, melded together like a two-piece puzzle.

Now while the abovementioned "strong identities as a boy and a girl" might throw you off, I would point to what Victoria Lacroix said about this passage: note the lack of the word "respectively." I rest my case.

Now full disclosure, my personal headcanon for Nepeta is genderfluid transmasc. The whole affinity for roleplaying lends itself to a more shifting identity and I just think Nepeta, given more time, would love exploring the little nooks and crannies of gender.

This isn't going into the more complicated shit with Gender when it comes to Equius and Dirk and all that other stuff. Here's a quick summary so you can see exactly how my brain is broken.

forgive me if i'm conflating several different things here, but the idea that a cue ball - and by extension doc scratch - represents a cancerous trauma left by sexual assault was one of your earlier analyses wasn't it? the idea seems so ubiquitous to me now but i felt like a lot of people could benefit from revisiting it in the wake of that latest beyond canon update

Mm… like you said, you have my earlier analyses a little mixed up. And honestly my current take on the subject focuses more on how the problem of rape is leveraged towards transphobic ends in political discourse? So... perhaps not what you're looking for.

My old approach was to regard not the cue ball but the Green Sun as an emblem of trauma: for example, Rose talks with Jaspers atop a monolith of the Green Sun, when Jaspers's apparent drowning caused Rose's fear of water. Talking to Jaspers seemed to involve confronting that trauma, and the significance of that interaction transferred upon the Green Sun as a symbol. So later when Jade combines her dreamcorpse with Bec, Jadesprite's tearful inability to turn away from its searing light seemed to imply that fusing with Bec somehow awoke a traumatic memory that Jade was no longer able to suppress.

Various scenes led me to believe this was a memory of sexual assault: the dream sequence where Bec Noir creeps upon WV (who is in Jade's bed) and instigates some distressing fusion of their bodies, as the fire of the Green Sun Burns. The dream where Jade attacks Clubs Deuce (resulting in a DEAD GRANDPA SMACKDOWN in the waking world), only for CD to return later and attack Jade with an explosion of white foam (through which he implicitly continues to embody Grandpa). The point where Jade goes grimbark after spotting Jake's groin (as though it were a distressing trigger) and where Jade is, after again calling attention to the banana hammock, crushed beneath Jake's white hope explosion (which echos CD's shaving cream). I could go on.

But the above is all bait: Jade goes grimbark because the very notion of a man in panties is posed as the violent intrusion of the masculine upon the feminine, posed as rape. The hints of assault function as homophobic scaremongering, feminism of the trans-exclusive strain. Jade is afraid of lightning, which is posed as a masculine pneumatic intrusion into the inert feminine vessel -- which is to say, bringing Frankenstein/Jadesprite to life with a zap comes to represent rape, and the overwhelming urge is to REMOVE THE LIGHTNING, GET IT OUT GET IT OUT (the scene has visual reference to Aradiabot ripping her heart out following Equius's violation), hence Jadesprite's urge to die. Jade earlier displayed distaste for the pneuma via her always-ill-fated reader interactive sections: playing flute, selecting fruit, fighting (and in her own mind conversing with) Grandpa. Though ostensibly early, abstract indications of Jade's sensitivity to violation, these events also just display homophobia: blowing into wind instruments is a cocksucking joke inherited from Problem Sleuth, "fruit" means gay, Jade calls Grandpa a "bag of wind" because his cornball shit is gay (derogatory). It matters that Dirk is a Gay Guy who overwrote Jeanne Betancourt's voice for Pony Pals and now overwrites robot Rose's will on occasion because the story is satirizing a worldview wherein a "boy" adopting feminine characteristics is committing metaphysical rape.

The same goes for Doc Scratch: retroactively, he has the Handmaid locked up in a room because Caliborn got gender envy from the How To Draw Manga girl. Damara speaks in stilted staccato sentences for the same reason, it gives the impression that she is possessed by Lord English, that some insidious masculine force is speaking through her. Which again: transphobia. Or rather dysphoria, in this case, which was a major point of discussion in Openbound -- anxieties about internal and external reproach for expressing yourself abound, the imminent Rufioh/Horuss breakup represents bodily dysmorphia... I've talked about that elsewhere. The main point is illustrated by 583 of Problem Sleuth, where Nervous Broad (essentially a trans woman) looks into the mirror and sees a horrendous beast. This is why the Handmaid cannot escape Lord English: he is how she sees herself. The big bad of Homestuck, the embodiment of all that is foul of patriarchy, is an embodiment of transfeminine self-loathing, or more generally the picture of trans women that transmisogynists like to paint.

Vriska has a conversation with June about how she doesn't actually want to indulge her violent tendencies, how she thinks a life of peace could actually be the way to go. As she says all these, we are treated to a shot of Vriska's red boots crossed in such a way that a huge red X is imposed over her groin: this conversation is about dysphoria! Vriska implicitly declares violence and aggression to be phallic -- an association strengthen by the sexed roles of moirallegiance, in which women must sooth violent men. Elsewhere in the story, Vriska's seemingly inescapable violent tendencies are embodied by Doc Scratch -- therefore he is, in essence, Vriska's phallus, which she resents even as she is compelled to obey its directives.

There's actually a bit with Jake where the cue ball (or rather, a tower orb that resembles a cue ball) is used to represent a dick: "The space in your inventory is mainly hogged up by one incredibly huge thing. You guess you should get rid of it. But you can’t shake the feeling you might need it someday, and you don’t want to risk ditching it and be caught with your pants down later." As Spidergirl shoots her webbing on the floor nearby, Jake briefly considers losing the dick. That Doc Scratch's head is a nuclear bomb makes this motif coincide nicely with Jake's association with the irradiated dick of Doctor Manhattan (and Hulk), which as you've pointed out before was used in Watchmen to illustrate homophobic scaremongering.

Or hey, let's try to establish a new connection between Doc Scratch and Bec: perhaps epilogue!Jade's dog dick, was already present from the moment Jadesprite was born. Perhaps the anger Jade feels toward this newly formed phallic woman (who she calls a pansy) is informed by the contempt she expressed for fursuits, and how the people within them are dumb to think that makes them real animals -- a transphobic barb followed in short order by more slander for Grandpa, a hunter who skins animals and places the pelts by armor and portraits of women. Perhaps all this drama is condensed on page 6630, where Jake's big gay Hope bubble crushes Jade's green fireball, forming a portrait of Doc Scratch.

Perhaps we should pronounce "Doc Scratch" with an English accent, so that it becomes "Dog's Crotch".

Gendered-trolls anon: I mean that, in canon, they all have traits clearly associated with humans of their stated genders (girls wear makeup and dresses, Tavros is bullied for not being tough and Karkat watching romcoms is mock-worthy), and it's very obvious Hussie just tacked on the Mother Grub system as a joke to a species he was envisioning as grey humans and never considered how a species which doesn't have a human reproductive system cannot possibly have assigned gender based on reproductive anatomy, as humans understand it. Fans grasp that point, but then they *say* that trolls don't have assigned gender or gender-associated anatomy, without actually going further down the thought path and realising that means they would have no reason to understand what a gender even IS unless there was some other anatomical system they were using as a reference point. Both fans and the Hiveswap sprite artists draw the trolls with humanoid gender-associated anatomy (tits and hips on the girls, broad shoulders on the guys, sometimes less pronounced but never applied vice versa), and we know the canon writing team don't use the fanon of gender traits coming from lusus pheromones because Equius' centaur is confirmed to be a hermaphrodite by Kanaya and trans woman Vriska still has a Spider-*Mom*. It feels hypocritical and the idea of a world with no assigned gender that has gender roles anyway makes me feel gross - it feels like the equivalent of a world where you're expected to follow social standards of behaviour and dress based on what colour people guess your nonexistent wings would be if you had them.

Trying to find more invocations of stoning, following meteors-from-the-Veil and Dave's glass house metaphor. First hit came from Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff #34, entitled "if this guy any more stoned then that, he's belong in the holy fucking buble" -- biblical lapidation becomes a weed joke. The title's structure is repeated in the comic itself: SB says its Monday, HJ corrects him and says it Tuesday, the word "stooned" appears and SB is bombarded with 420 gifs. Structurally, SB contradicts authority and gets Punished, capitally.

From here we go in several directions:

In the context of the story's Islamic motifs, I suspect the line from SBaHJ #8 "I need to know what ANGEL to use" uses its religious misspelling of "angle" to invoke Qiblah, the orientation of self towards Mecca that Muslims apply in prayer. SB needing to "get his pour on" (he is angling milk) may in turn become a pun on prayer. We get some possible affirmation of this from Karkat on pg 4350, when he remarks that they are within "a stone's throw" of perhaps the brightest sun in existence, and requests protective shades. As with Epilogue Karkat's sun-curtains (which permit throwing stones in a glass house) and the stone-throwing Veil, this invokes the hijab. Karkat follows with a sarcastic plea to know who the leader is, saying "I NEED TO KNOW IN WHOSE DIRECTION I MUST BEHAVE AS THE MOST PATHETICALLY USELESS SUBORDINATE I CAN BE." This is another sly reference to Qiblah.

Emphasis on stoning as capital punishment draws me toward the Aimless Renegade, who IS THE LAW. I'm not sure if bullets count as stones within these strained allegories, but its interesting that we transition from the mummy-shrouded AR accosting illegal iconography of the amphibious, to Grandpa shooting a butterfly with the colors of the trans pride flag, to Jade deciding to wear clothes she received from John (trans coded in the same way a John receiving outfits from Vriska?) whereupon WHOP we cut to Dad punching someone in a ridiculous hat. "You bear the vicious brunt of this story transition directly in the face." If the invocation of stoning holds, this is perhaps a rhetorical situation akin to Porrim's: just as her critiques of misogyny must be tempered by acknowledgement of the racist paradigm in which she subsists, here the depiction of transphobia becomes implicitly Islamophobic, justifying aggression towards the Orient. I have witnessed that genre of rhetoric in relation to Gaza

On the other hand, I suppose it's ambiguous whether Dad punishing the clown hat is in service of the transphobia or the Islamophobia, since headgear is regular fodder for cultural jabs. Mituna falling and hitting his helmet served as occasion to belittle men praying with their turbans to the ground, which is turn marks the skateboard as a prayer rug, which is slurred into a flying carpet. We see this in two SBaHJ strips: #25 in which SB rides his skateboard up into clouds mis-labelled as "cloun" (meaning ridiculous hats) and #33 in which SB concludes his epic grinds by leaning on a ledge misspelled as "ledger" (as in Heath, the guy who played the Joker in the Dark Knight). The association with transphobia continues when Egbert flies a car through a clown/cloud on page 3414: Egbert, who is quietly contemplating deviance from gender norms, offers a teasing reproach to religious strictures around sex with the line "i think we can both agree that it would be reckless to look at a crappy shipping diagram made by an alien, and ignore its message altogether." After this, Karkat calls in a panic over intensified honking, and John anxiously curbs the honking in the car. Then we get Seek the Highblood, in which Equius and Nepeta (a boy and girl who have been trying on each other's clothes) march to their deaths at the hands of a clown... who is wearing a girl's glasses! Just to keep everything nice and confusing

Attempts to find more stoning-inflected references to weed were not fruitful. It occurred to me though that Qiblah sounds like Keebler, so I went back to page 630 to revisit that odd joke in Wise Guy about elves baking cookies in trees. The playing cards in the illustration appear to have a Rub el Hizb on the back
