My manhood is a quiet fact to me. It's not something that needs to be proved. I often find myself wanting to ask my transphobic family, do you feel the need to prove your masculinity? Watching young Joanne Rowling is for me now what watching Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels is like for Star Wars fans who have already seen the original trilogy. This woman became a villain to so many of the young people who were so sure she was their savior. The trans kids who of course felt like Harry would have, out of place without being able to pinpoint why, and then finding out that they weren't the problem, they weren't broken, they were just different than they and everyone else thought. And then in one Tweet she discounted the experience of the trans girls who may well have seen themselves in her work, she pulled the rug out from under those of us who, like Hermione, felt the powerful undercurrents of morality and ethics within the books as a spiritual force. The Harry Potter books were, in many of the most important ways, my religion, the source of meaning and internal strength that I drew upon to bring me joy and comfort. Harry Potter, as a character, was so compassionate. He was my Christ figure, as Aslan was for others, Luke Skywalker for others, Katniss Everdeen for others, Superman for others. And so Jo Rowling is a classical tragic hero, her greatest quality brought low by a fatal flaw, like Darth Vader, the power and fame and, now I know about her being attacked by her ex-husband, fear/anguish overwhelming her heart until she hardened it against the people/the children who needed her most. She wouldn't back down on her Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist stance, and I cannot support the franchise that meant so much to me anymore. Anakin's features twisted in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"Like... I look like a girl, but I don't feel like one. I never have, really. I feel like a guy, or like something in between."

Ani nodded slowly. "I think I understand. So would that make you my boyfriend instead of my girlfriend?"

You blinked. He was taking this so well. You expected resistance, or for him to break up with you, the type of reaction you'd gotten before. Instead you only received understanding and polite questions. You broke down crying.

"Oh my stars, (D/N), I'm sorry..." Anakin rushed over to you, gathering you in his arms. "Did I say something wrong?"

"No, no..." You brushed him off, managing a smile. "No, I'm just... not used to people understanding. Yes, I... I guess I'm your boyfriend." The word felt right, good. "And... and can you call me (Y/N) instead of (D/N)? It just... it just feels more right."

"Of course." Ani nodded. "I love you, (Y/N)." He kissed your head, and for once all felt right.
