You're mine now, old man.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#a-qing#xiao xingchen#A-qing's story kicks off so strong. You really get a sense that she feels strongly attached to xxc during the pre-empathy scenes#and that she has a strong sense of loyalty and perseverance with strong survival instinct#but then you see her before all the tragedy and you *immediately* learn she is a clever trickster!#She follows xxc not out of gratitude but out of a sense that this guy is her meal ticket.#xxc is kind and strong but most importantly *noble*#she can smell the self-sacrificing bright eyed hope on this stranger. She knows the mere fact she's a young blind girl means#he will protect her. The fact he gives her a little money doesn't hurt her justification but tbh she would have followed all the same#a-qing is *the* catgirl of all time actually. Follows you for the fact you provide food and shelter. Opportunistic. May grow to be loyal.#That's not even getting into the parallels here between these two characters and wwx (who is seeing these events play out)#the yi city trio are arguably the three split aspects of wwx: who he feels like (a-qing the opportunist) who he wants to be (xxc the noble)#and who he feels seen as (xy the vengeful).#one day I'll write a more robust analysis on that. prob in the tags though#(His a-qing parallels are also tied with the fact they both were street rat orphans who learned how to code-switch to be whoever#they need to be to feel safe. I have a lot more thoughts to share but augh another time...another time)

this post from @lesbiancosmicowl hit me so fucking deeply, and as i finished reading it i heard the lyrics "grit my teeth and try to act deserving when i know there is nowhere i can hide from your humiliating grace" and the combination of those two things has led me here

As many "toxic yaoi Jimmy x Curly" jokes I've made I could write a whole ass essay about their relationship and their codependency. They have such a shifting power dynamic throughout the entire game and none of it is romantic and I'm not entirely sure if any of it could be counted as love at all. It's more primal. It's obsessive. It's a failing survival instinct neither realized they had until it was too late and everyone else had to suffer the consequences
I just can't describe it without going into a full essay cause they both have this obsessive need to fix everything in their lives by fixing others and making things worse. They both want control so bad they're willing to steal it from everyone else in different ways. Curly is complicit in Jimmy's actions but he is not at the same level of maliciousness that Jimmy is
You can tell how desperately Curly had to cling onto the idea that Jimmy is a good guy. He could just talk to him and fix him and Anya would be okay again. He could fix this cause he knows Jimmy is good. Curly needs things to be okay or else he failed his one job of making sure everything is okay and having a terrible copilot is not okay so that means he needs his copilot to just not be terrible problem solved!
And the entire game is watching Jimmy fall apart as he realizes he can't just fix the fucked up shit he did. Curly announced the message and Jimmy suddenly decided he can't survive anymore and crashed the ship. He can't untraumatize Anya and now he can't uncrash the ship and Curly laying on his medical cot is a constant reminder of that. If he can just save Curly then he's okay he's fine again. He's undone his harm
They hate each other so much to the point where they need the other to give them purpose. I don't know if they're necessarily good friends, but we know they had a long relationship before the game's time and the announcement set Jimmy off since he felt like Curly was leaving them. Leaving him. Jimmy needed Curly to help give him a purpose and Curly needed Jimmy to give him a purpose and this one message fucked that up and they both got swept up in this codependent fight for survival. That one announcement triggered Jimmy's fear that Curly had been enabling and encouraging and now Curly's stuck in a cryopod listening to his "friend" tell him how much of a hero they both are. They did it! They fixed everything! They fixed each other!

Something important for us all to remember is that we've had 3 years to make these characters our own, to internalize them. Fanon is not canon. My Vi is not your Vi is not my mutual's Vi. My Caitlyn is not your Caitlyn. My Jinx is not your Jinx.
We've had 3 years for them to grow and change, to identify with them and project on them, to mold them into what we need them to be.
We've had 3 years with an amazing starting point where we could veer off in so many different directions, not constrained by knowing what comes next.
We're about to know what comes next. All those possibilities, those dreams for what we wanted, are going to be unequivocally canon divergent (except for every fic writer who called Vi being a street/pit fighter, they get to be smug as hell).
There is only one canon.
I've fallen prey to this before, where after a long gap and making a character mine, she didn't react in the new canon to things like my version of her would have. That's ok. It doesn't make it bad storytelling on the actual writer's part. That doesn't make it out of character.
You get me? It doesn't make it bad or ooc if the characters in the new season aren't the way you predicted or want them to be. You will have time afterward to incorporate the new information, possibly re-evaluate your view of them, and make them your own again. (For good this time, bc it's the last season.)
So just watch and let things play out and let them settle before you get upset, ok?

I know we all like to make fun of people for bringing wrath and natural selection shirts outside but, realistically speaking how many “normal” people are going to recognize those shirts and put two and two together? I feel like you’re more likely to get a negative reaction if you wear a simple Trenchcoat then any clothing with those words on it

Question I’ve been thinking about recently: Does Sweeney Todd still fit the definition of a tragedy if it follows that definition beat by beat, EXCEPT FOR by the end of Act 2, Sweeney’s flaws arguably surpass the suffering he experiences, leading to some people being able to potentially argue that after Epiphany, his “tragic protagonist” status gets revoked by the whole, you know, mass genocide and cannibalism thing?
Like seriously, you’ve got the fatal flaw and drive for revenge, you’ve got the spiral into nihilism and the prior innocence destroyed by the injustice enacted on him that starts him on his spiral, you’ve even got by the end, a tragic knowledge he obtains that doesn’t hinder the inevitability of the tragedy in Lucy — but does Sweeney stay a tragic protagonist till the end if his means outweigh the ends? Like this man does some of the most abhorrent shit imaginable, but ALSO, he has an extremely sympathetic reason for doing so and he was partially taken advantage of and thrown into that spiral by Mrs Lovett. You’ve even got the intention of invoking fear and pity from the audience from the idea that the tragedy could happen to anyone, “to seek revenge may lead to hell / but everyone does it, though seldom as well”.
Is Sweeney Todd still a tragedy if its protagonist becomes unforgivable, but still highly sympathetic?
