here is part 2 of my glorious harumasa and ether aptitude regression syndrome (again calling it EARS) hcs because im not finished yapping (beware of possibly unclear and vague wording im not writing an essay here)

- harumasa sometimes experiences something like a phantom limb sensation where he feels sections or even his entire body is that of an ethereal. like his physical body stays the same but he feels he is in an ethereal body with all the ridges and warped limbs and proportions which makes interacting with things harder. (reason number 546 to avoid work)

- this translates over to my next hc that EARS will sometimes cause harumasa to just exist. from the perspective of an ethereal (thanatos specifically). like he'll keep his mind and memories but his senses will be replaced by an ethereal's. words will lose meaning, or gain new meanings, he wouldn't be able to talk much, if at all. ethereals exist in chaotic unstable hollows so it would be difficult for one, and harumasa by extension when in this state, to like do things. he knows what he is supposed to do hypothetically but executing it is another matter. (reason 471 to avoid work). like tf is a coffee machine, the carpet is coffee, chairs aren't chairs, everything is fixed to the ground and the ground is fixed to the sky and the coffee is and the coffee is and coffee type of shit. harumasa beats himself up over it. a lot. but not where anyone can see ofc.

- from his demo and trust events, we can infer that harumasa has trouble sleeping. i imagine that he has weird ass out of body dreams and paralysis. like having sleep paralysis, from the perspective of the sleep paralysis demon which is thanatos. roaming around new eridu as thanatos. that kind of stuff. i bet he's dreamt before of being in a my neighbour totoro situation where he's totoro, as a thanatos, at a bus stop with either soukaku or two random kids

- harumasa definitely has some ethereal like mannerisms to me. his dash attack is literally like thanatos. the way he moves is inhuman, smooth, unnaturally fluid in a way that training alone cannot achieve. very uncanny if you look closely. his direct gaze can be unnerving. this def isn't something he stresses about and practices to avoid why would you ask aha ha. his natural talent with archery is partially attributed to EARS along with sharp senses, observation skills and reflexes

- all of the above become more extreme depending on how long he’s been exposed to ether and to what level

What did you think of Sabo when you first saw him (both as a kid and as an adult)? I knew of aces existence before watching one piece and it was inconceivable to me that Luffy had a brother, so I was actually reluctant to believe that he also had a noble looking blond brother too lmao, I was in shock

Ok so honestly!!! I didn’t know what to think of him at first! I thought it was very expected and slightly cliche at first to have him be a runaway noble because it was rather obvious just by the way he dressed! It wasn’t particularly compelling to me beyond a general feeling of found family. I didn’t really see a problem with him at that point, I just figured he’d be written off or dead because he’d never appeared up until that point

I think the flashback arc was very excellently executed though and I really did find sabo endearing by the end of it! It makes a lot of sense that sabo would have had to act as a voice of reason to Ace’s much more aggressive behavior. I also think that I didn’t like him at first because it felt like he’d run from a place of privilege because of selfish and self-serving reasons, without truly knowing why he hated nobles beyond the fact that they were using him. But he developed fascinatingly into someone who was actually well aware of the atrocities they committed and had a strong sense of moral justice despite whatever conditioning he must have received as a child, and that stuck with me a lot

I didn’t expect him to pop back up again but I will admit I got really excited! Especially because they kept teasing the revolutionary army as a key player before his appearance and having him meant a much more concrete tie to them. I also think it’s rather thematically appropriate to give him Ace’s fruit, especially in the context given afterwards. Sabo is such a fascinating character because his entire life has been ‘too little too late���. He couldn’t stop the gray terminal fire, he couldn’t set sail and become a pirate on his own, he couldn’t save ace, so what can he do besides making sure that ace is remembered, making sure that despite his past he is doing his best to undo the damage that nobles have done?

Sabo is such a great case study of guilt, in a way that is very different from ace. He fits into the three brothers perfectly precisely because of how he is born to a legacy he does not desire and what he decides to do with it.

here’s some thoughts (hcs) on harumasa and his ether aptitude regression syndrome because zzz has me in a chokehold rn:

- the reason people with ether aptitude regression syndrome (im just gonna say EARS) have high ether aptitude is because the condition makes them “blend in” with the surrounding ether

- as EARS advances in a person, instead of blending in with the hollow, it recognises them as more of a glitch or error. like a blank spot on a painted wall. and it hastens to paint over that spot, which results in the person becoming corrupted much more rapidly

- NOW, i imagine that the cause of EARS symptoms to begin with is that the condition makes a person’s constitution more like an ethereal. for a person with EARS, being away from ether is what causes physical deterioration in their health like harumasa’s trouble breathing. But being near ether doesn’t fix the symptoms either as their body is still human enough that ether corruption will have negative side effects, EARS merely increases the rate of corruption, among other things which def don’t keep harumasa up at night. he is completely untroubled ha ha

- i have lots more thoughts about how having an ethereal like constitution impacts harumasa specifically because he is frequently entering hollows so stay tuned because (zzz tv simulator reference)
