The Fall of Doriath musical stream
Do you especially enjoy the doom and despair parts of the Silmarillion? Then I have the musical for you! Pád Doriathu is about the end of said forest realm, and the downward spiral at the end of the first Age of Beleriand. It's by Falešné Společenstvo (a czech musical theatre group who has 6 full-length Silm musicals so far).
If you don't speak Czech, like many of us, all of the songs and the prologue have automatic english subtitles from the original script. With the dialogue, it's more context/vibes-based. But still very enjoyable, and the beautiful music of course transcends language barriers.
You can watch the musical here on yt, but if you would like to watch it in a group, the Last Homely Server is hosting 2 watchparties again. Hope to see you there!
Stream 1: 30th of November, 18:30 CET Stream 2: 1st of December, 10:00 CET

Since we now have a subtitled version of Falešné společenstvo's Children of Hurin musical, (go watch it!) we had a little watchparty yesterday and it was so goooood (and very sad.) I have to rewatch it soon though bc I missed quite a bit of the middle, and in general to catch all the details.
However I had a vision I needed to draw, brought to you by the alternate reality where I apparently make costumes for fs and don't seem to have budget constraints xD

For those of you who never knew as it's a detail one can easily miss (especially depending on which aspect ratio you're viewing in) but a lovely detail at that: Pippin was in the hobbit band in the background!
He's the one playing the banjolele!
These shots I have of the scenes where he is most visible are from the Fullscreen edition (A DvD I own and often watch for the different viewing experience). I believe in the Widescreen edition their heads are cut off by the aspect ratio-- so it's easy to miss!
And for those of you who haven't put it together already, yes! That is our beloved Merry standing next to him as they both watch Frodo dance.
Mind you, Merry is not in the band. A few scenes prior he was actually along the precession line of bringing in Bilbo's Birthday cake. He probably came up to the platform to talk to Pippin, give him a mug of something to drink and inevitably snatch him away for some mischief. Because after this brief scene, Pippin is then absent from the stage-- he and Merry are going to go swipe some fireworks!

Someone’s prob caught this long before me, but:
In Lord of the rings (fellowship) we see the ring leaving Gollum and bouncing and rolling down the rocks:
The ring wanted to leave Gollum and therefore did.
It’s then picked up by Bilbo unwillingly; has an ‘unexpected journey’; and stays with him.
But when Bilbo is leaving, he decides to leave the ring with Frodo. The ring however, wants to stay and keep wielding its power and influence over him.
And when, at Gandalf’s insistence, Bilbo drops the ring, it still doesn’t want to leave him:
Which is why it falls flat, no bouncing or rolling away. It thuds to the floor like a child might stomp its foot when not getting its way.
I dunno how i’ve never caught this b4, and I may just be stupid and ppl have spoken bout this b4 but i’m a nerd and can’t help but mention it unprompted.

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.
#imperial radch#also a great example of the 'you don't have to be Tolkien' phenomenon#if you want to think about linguistic differences by building all the languages in your setting#and being able to explain what those differences are through actual texts in the language in question#that's AWESOME#but it's not the only way to do it#it's also interesting because of course this style only works in book form#everyone's speaking different languages but in a written account they're all 'translated' for you#but of course if it was a TV series they would all have to be speaking a language the audience understands#(or you *would* have to go wild with conlangs)#and i think that's really cool as well--#how for a series where song is so central we don't actually hear any of the actual in-universe words or any of the music#it's all been filtered#and again you know this is happening but seeing the examples of how real songs--the shape hymns and 'L'homme Arme'--are presented#makes you a lot more viscerally aware of how limited your perspective is#it's good#ann leckie i love you

You, Silmarillion fan, do you enjoy pain?
Then come to our stream of Děti Húrinovy (Children of Húrin) by Falešné Společenstvo (a czech musical theatre group who has to date 6 full-length Silmarillion musicals). There is loss, grief, pain and anguish in spades, and the occasional unexpected, but very welcome humorous interlude. Also gorgeous music.
"But I don't speak Czech?" Me neither! But luckily for you they have just added english subtitles :D
"Ok so where can I watch this?" The full musical is here on yt, but if you would like to watch it in company, the Last Homely Server is hosting 2 watchparties. See you there!

Finarfin will usually remain neutral whenever Feanor and Fingolfin get into dumb arguments but since music is an important part of Eldar culture and all three of them happen to have sons that are really talented harpists I like to think it's one of the only true petty rivalries that Finarfin allows himself to indulge in because
1. Eh it's not killing anyone
2. Get some really good bangers out of it
3. Fuck you Kano wishes he could play as well as my Findarato

I was going to say we need to be weirder about Maglor but then I remembered crablor. That’s on me. We need to also be DIFFERENT weird about Maglor.
Maglor who walks along the coast for thousands of years and does not stop singing. Maglor who after ages of the world have passed, has a voice that is made only for music. When he speaks, there is something too lyrical to the tone. He sighs and the world accompanies him. His raised voice sets the ground shaking, his laments call water like tears from the sky. He has to be careful when he speaks to people, however rare that is, because of it. He weeps and those who can hear him cannot help but weep as well. Maglor with a voice so powerful that he can no longer use it the way he could when the world was young. One more thing lost to the Oath.
#tolkien#silmarillion#silm#maglor#kanafinwe#crablor#The inherent tragedy of Maglor’s grief taking even his music from him#Too good not to contemplate#The world was made by singing— it’s a very powerful act#6000 odd years or something doing nothing BUT singing is gonna fuck up an elf#Even more than usual#I think there’s something to this as well#About falling in love with your grief#Letting it outlive and outgrow its purpose#Singing on the beach heals no wounds#Not maglors not the people he’s wronged#And losing control of his voice is that extension of his inability to truly move forward from the oath#And it means he is still losing things to those gems#Idk I’m not even a maglor girlie I don’t go here#I just think. Gestures vaguely. The quencies. Yknow?

listen. in theory, i know that the hobbit was published in the 1930s and lotr was published in the 1950s, but conceptually, that's never fully sunk in. people were talking about bilbo baggins while world war ii bombs were flying overhead. discussing their favorite characters merry and pippin alongside the news of the brand new polio vaccine. making jokes about mordor between fireside chats. like that's absolutely crazy to me. unreal
#how did one even engage w media back then tho like they didn't even have tumblr#like “ah yes nice book now back to supporting the war effort and listening to swing music”#like what were they even doing with lotr like genuinely#lord of the rings#the hobbit#lotr#jrr tolkien
