An Introduction

Hi. My name is Fern.

I have been on this website for literally 10 years, and it's been a lifeline for me, for all of its faults and all of its flaws. And it feels like it's becoming as much fun again as it was in its heyday, and I feel comfortable enough putting myself out there to say that.

I am a nonbinary trans woman, emphasis on the woman. I have described my gender as "85% Woman, 15% Other". I haven't worked out all of the details, but the biggest part of the "Other" is Mischief. I am a lot of things; a science teacher, an author, a nerd, a gamer, a silly girl and a kinky cosmonaut. And all of those things are good, actually.

I am fat. I have always been fat and I will probably never be skinny. And I used to hate that. I used to hate my body and thought that was because it was fat, not because it didn't look like a woman. And I have realized that. I am Fat, and that is actually so sexy and fun of me. And my body is only getting better day by day.

I am also a witch. This is the newest revelation. Like, within the last week new. I was a very logical kid, Mr. Spock and Data were my favorite Star Trek characters, but I didn't understand that Mr. Spock and Data both had emotions and processed them in the ways that were right for them, even if other people didn't get it. I was in denial about magic for a long time. And I don't believe in any literal gods, but I do believe that the vibes that you put out into the world reflect back like ripples in a pond. And that if you put good things into the world, good things will happen. I tried being hyper rationalist and atheist and I realized it wasn't for me. Sorry, Pepper.

I am in Love. This has been a period of development, and that's fine. Because the story of love is a very long one. I am in Love, and I am in Love with two people, and I realize that that's okay now. Polyamory feels like the right fit for me, and trying to be monogamous and attach my entire life to one person wasn't healthy. It wasn't healthy for them and it wasn't healthy for me.

I have had a rough life. In addition to being closeted for the longest time and trans, I had two abusive relationships in my life. One with a professor, one with a girlfriend. And that girlfriend helped me with my trauma with the professor (I am so glad that I didn't leave the US behind and move to Australia, thank goddess). So I felt like I owed her, and I stayed much longer than I should have even as that relationship became more and more rankled and toxic. But breaking up with her was one of the bravest things I've done in my life, and I believe that all of you are capable of that kind of bravery if you try. And on some level, I hope that she's realized that she was being a bad person, and that she's gotten better. But on every level, I never want to find out in person.

I know this was a lot. This is also kind of my way of announcing that I've changed my name on here? I'm now demi-shoggoth, which is a combination of two handles I've been using since I was in middle school. Demiurge and Dr. Shoggoth. Well, I didn't get that doctorate, but I do still create worlds, and I am still a shapeshifter who can take on what forms they need for a job and are scary when they need to be. And I will find my Y'ha-nthlei. Build it myself if I have to. And live in it in Wonder and Glory forever with the people who are my planets and moons, my myriad Tiny Worlds.

There are a lot of Invader Zim ships I like but WOOF this one, man. It's just so fun and entertaining

Do I even need to explain? Constant drama. So much angst potential. They're at each other's throats, they're the only person either of them can actually rely on and yet they don't trust each other at all, they're the only people who understand each other and yet they just don't get each other. They'll be friendly for 5 minutes and one will backstab the other for no reason. It's not unheard of for their conflict to escalate to tbe point one attempts to kill the other, and yet neither can operate without the other. They have in a sense become dependent on the other's existence for enjoyment, for motivation, and have grown to crave attention from the other. They are a complex toxic mess (it really is no wonder why I flocked to lawlight immediately after thinking about zadr for months)

Listen LISTEN. Zim is nonbinary. Neither boy nor girl? Both? Gender apathetic? Gender fluid? It does not matter. He is Zim. Gender is queer. Dib is a trans man to me.

This is probably the most concise way to describe what their relationship is to me. I don't know how to explain that zadr, zadf, and zade are all true to me. At once. It's complicated! They want to kill each other and dissect and study and tear apart and ruin each other and yet they couldn't handle the other being dead. They could be friends while dating separate people and yet be so wildly close. They're possessive. They're the only ones allowed to be this close to each other as friends, they're the only ones allowed to hurt the other this way and try to kill them this way, they're the only one the other should desire to this extent. There is a minimum level of attention they should have on the other, whether friends or enemies. They've never hated a person so viscerally. They've never loved a person so passionately. They could live together domestically and be life partners without ever desiring what is usual in a romantic or sexual relationship. When they get older tension tends to snap and they swap kisses on the battlefield. They're scientists at heart, so romance and sexuality is an extension of their curiosity. And yet if they ever came to desire each other they'd never admit it. It's its own nebulous thing. They can never be fully platonic, fully romantic, just enemies. No matter what form their relationship takes (allies, enemies, best friends, lovers, etc) there's always SOMETHING that makes it different and sets it apart. And that is something that makes them appeal to me

Combining both unhealthy in a good way and a bad way here. Unhealthy in a bad way is clear. Kind of obsession and passion that makes them so much worse. Like you put them in the same room and you can be surprised how much more awful they can get. And yet it's unhealthy in a good way like...like that redit post about how they're toxic but they're better together than apart ("never involve anyone else in what you have going on"). And yet while they clearly make each other worse, they also have the possibility of making each other better at the same time. If they admit to themselves that they care about each other, it's sort of an irrevocable change to their personality. They will never be able to be ruthless in the same way. In every universe they exist, they find each other (canon to the comics), and they make each other better and worse at the same time with the relationship they share.

I may not be rotating them as hard as I was even a year ago but by GOD can I go off about them. They are so funky. Every time I get back on them again the microwave becomes a taffy puller

Sorry they've never dated but they have the vibes sometimes. Especially in aus where one of them leaves for an extended anount of time or they stop seeing each other for a while and feel as if the other has stopped wanting to oppose them.

ok anon thank you so much for asking this question because i have in fact recently fallen in love with lithuania, because they are such an interesting character! (also hhhh im so sorry for how late this is) 

Gender

As you may have noticed, I usually use they/them pronouns to refer to Lithuania. I hc them as being nonbinary and using he/they pronouns, though I personally prefer to use they rather than he in that case because. Idk what pronouns you use. But in my experience it’s really hard to get people to call you ‘they’ when you go by ‘he/they’ or ‘she/they’ or smth like that. Though I don't imagine any of the nations are very attached to their “birth gender” (are nations born???), lithuania is one of those who is a bit less attached. They’re just sort of there, in terms of gender. In my headcanons i also think this has something to do with religion, as lithuania was one of the last european countries to convert to Christianity- just because so much of gender as we know it comes from christianity and what people in the 16th and 17th centuries considered a ‘good’ christian. Thats not to say that there are no gender roles in other religions, but that the way westerners typically conceptualize gender has quite a lot to do with the religious conflicts occurring within christianity. Like you can trace the ideas behind the nuclear family archetype back to the protestant reformation. Additionally, I hc them as being Jewish, which further distances them from the western christian gender roles (though that’s not why i hc them as jewish! More on that later). Finally, i just like myself some trans/nb characters. There’s so few popular trans hcs and that makes me kinda sad ya know? Welcome to the trans agenda its just me projecting onto all my faves

Mental Health

Okay, so, i think it’s pretty well known that lithuania’s mental health is wack. They’re often characterised as being a very anxious person, but i think the ways in which they’re anxious is super interesting. For one, they are extremely conflict averse and like to avoid it by being a sort of people pleaser. It’s a sort of defense mechanism, because nobody can hate you if you do whatever they say. Like, if you let people be shitty to you, they won’t hate you for your personality. This is clearly flawed logic because then people are still going to be shitty to you, but. It makes sense to liet. In their mind, it’s okay to let people hurt if your reason is sound enough- Because if they’re not super emotionally engaged in a relationship that’s unhealthy for them, then they can’t get hurt, right? Of course, they can. A good example of this is their relationship with Russia. I think tolvydas sees compliance as necessary there, in order to avoid being hurt. The thing is…compliance is also hurting them, even if they see it as ‘worth it.’ To them, behaving in a submissive way is a survival tactic. A really bad one, but a survival tactic nonetheless. 

This also plays into their tendency to be self-martyring. I think Tolvydas is very good at fighting, and all around a really awesome warrior (strong aragorn energy), which makes them think that they need to be the one to save everyone. Hero complex, sort of. This, coupled with their almost maternal care for Latvia and Estonia, makes them feel like they have a sort of weight-of-the-world on their shoulders. Though Estonia and Latvia do look up to them a lot, Tolvydas can sometimes fail to realise that they are also their own people and can fight their own battles. He feels a sort of obligation to protect them due to their shared culture and languages as The Baltic Trio, though it doesn’t go much further than a sense of obligation. They spent most of their youth fighting, to the extent that that’s most of what Tolvydas personally knows as ‘life,’ but they never actually got to know the other two Baltics very well until the modern day. They have to protect, have to be a caregiver, but they don’t actually know super well the things they’re trying to protect. It’s both a sense of obligation to protect as well as the sense that this is all they’re good at and as long as they’re fighting for a morally just cause, that’ll do. 

I think something that would expose this flaw would be when they were first taken over by the Russian Empire in the 1790s, they were pretty miserable about a lot of things- Like the loss of all their territory and the sudden statelessness of their people- but a big one would’ve been the loss of Poland. This isn’t meant to be super shippy, but you know. They were united into one kingdom, and they had been for centuries, so i don’t imagine it was an easy separation. Though this is more up for debate where real people are concerned, these characters were essentially a big part of each other, ya know? Regardless of how much Lithuania actually likes Poland, they’re still a part of each other and that separation will undoubtedly be painful. Anyway, all that is to say that this separation was at the forefront of their mind during the beginning of the 19th century, and they let it sort of prevent them from taking care of the other Baltics. The issue with that is that they still considered themself to be protecting Estonia and Latvia, even though, in reality, nobody was. Also in reality, Lithuania was making themself out to be the worst off, and were generally sort of annoying to be around at this point in time. Their whole woe-is-me attitude wasn’t fun, and they were hypocritical in that they saw themself as being a better friend than they actually were. They still see themself as being a great friend, and though it’s improved in recent years, they’re still sort of. Flighty, i guess, where friendship is concerned. There was also a lot of annoyance by the other baltics about them being so self-martyring- Tolvydas was Ivan’s favorite, after all (that’s not necessarily a good thing, but. He was softer on them in certain ways). Anyway, I guess the big takeaway of this paragraph is that Liet often lets their self perception cloud the way they act in relationships. 

Much of the stuff I’ve mentioned so far is a result of them having quite a lot of PTSD. I think Lithuania’s character tends to be explored through a few common lenses, those being the medieval vibes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and through being oppressed by the Russian Empire/Soviet Union. Not to say that there’s not a lot of other content about them, but this is what I see most often. I think that all the nations have some form of PTSD, but with Lithuania it’s very pronounced, and it’s made clear that a lot of their tendencies are a result of past trauma- Like the need to take care of others. This is likely originating with their childhood, as they grew up in a very violent environment where their survival was never guaranteed (survivor’s guilt much?) and violence was just the way of things. This is where the need to protect comes from. There used to be several more Baltic nations, though you could argue that now there’s only two- Lithuania and Latvia, as Estonia does not speak a Baltic language and would really like to be considered Nordic. 

Finally, Lithuania is also an interesting character where forgiveness is concerned. I think their sense of morality is very black and white, so some people (Feliks) will be easily forgiven where others (Ivan) will not. In reality, I think it would definitely be valid for Tolvydas to hate both of them, yet they don't- Because they decided that Feliks was a friend and Ivan was not. Both Feliks and Ivan care very deeply about them, but neither treats Tolvydas in a very good way. Of course, I’m aware that the situation in the Russian Empire/USSR and the Commonwealth were very different, but I’m talking about these three dudes and their relationships with each other beyond the lens of politics. Because Feliks tried to be their friend in a way that didn’t hurt them tremendously, and because. Look at them, Feliks isn’t 5’4 and can’t hurt you. They’re not an intimidating person and they’re not incredibly powerful like Ivan is. Though that’s not all of it- Feliks’ feelings for Tolvydas are definitely a purer, more selfless type of love than what Ivan feels for them- it makes it harder for Tolvydas to hold a grudge against them. Whereas for Ivan, their relationship was about control. He needed to control them as a way of expressing how he felt about them. He represents a lot of what Tolvydas fought against in their youth, so of course they hate him. Of course, I don’t think they like holding grudges. They want to be able to care for everyone, because they know that everyone deserves to be treated well and cared for and all that. You can't exactly do that if you hold a grudge against someone, so it actually kind of sucks for them when they see someone they hate suffering. It’s a sort of conflict of interest- The caregiving instincts vs the hatred for this person- and they often don’t know what to do in that situation. Usually they wind up helping but not happy about it. They just don’t want to see others suffer, despite the fact that they dislike this person (Russia is of course the exception. They don’t want to help him at all anymore). 

Relationship with family

So, this is a bit of an interesting topic. I think the Baltics consider themselves family just because of what they’ve been through together, but they’re not actually blood related. Though they share similar cultures, and languages, they’re just not related. Maybe Lithuania and Latvia are cousins, but yeah. Lithuania sees themself as the head of their little family, as they have the oldest surviving European culture and language. They sometimes get in their head about that, and can act like both a mom friend and a mom who is bad at mom-ing. It’s a sort of self appointed thing, and can be really annoying to the other two. They don’t pay the utmost attention to their fellow Baltics, and are more concerned with physical well being than emotional well being, so, despite establishing themself as a caretaker, do not wind up actually caring for the other Baltics in the ways they need to be cared for. 

Fighting style

So, as I’ve mentioned, Lithuania is a talented fighter. They go hard as shit, and can very much kick your ass. I think they prefer to be very technical about how they fight, with something boring like a broadsword as their weapon of choice, but are not afraid to fight dirty. Like rip off an ear with their teeth kind of playing dirty. I think they take fighting very seriously. Though Lithuania as we know it is only about 800 years old, I think Tolvydas is much older. The definition of a nation (a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory, according to the oxford dictionary) does not require there to be a central governing body, so I think it’s quite possible for Lithuania to be well over 2000. Anyway, all that is to say that they didn’t grow up in medieval times, so by the time they’re like. Achieving dominance in Eastern Europe, they’re already very old and well versed in many different styles of fighting. In the modern day, I think they’ve learned more different fighting styles from other parts of the world, but will always fall back on the way they learned how to fight in ancient times. 

Religion

So as I mentioned earlier, Lithuania is Jewish in my headcanons (orthodox, specifically. I think they're kinda traditional). I have a couple reasons for this- There has been a historical presence of Ashkenazi Jews in Lithuania, going back to the 13th or 14th century, and this is due to certain legal protections granted to Jewish people under pre-Commonwealth law. They were legally on similar footing to the average free people of Lithuania, and were able to create a slightly more prosperous community than Jews in other areas of Europe. This was also affected by the Black Plague of the 1340s. Orthodox Jews tend to put a high value on cleanliness, and often have two sinks in their houses (my childhood home, for example, had two sinks, and i lived in a majority jewish area). They also happened to be concentrated in Eastern Europe, due to the protections. Because of this, Eastern European Jews have some of the highest sruvival rates for the Black Plague and actually brought up the survival rates of the region as a whole- Though this also resulted in some intense antisemitism, as many Christians blamed Jewish people for the plague even happening, due to their higher survival rates. Despite various expulsions  and the loss of legal rights, the Jewish population remained relatively steady up until world war 2. Jewish people made up about 10% of the total population of Lithuania in 1941, and 45% of the total population of Vilnius. (To put this in perspective, the entire world population is only about 0.2% Jewish). Anyway, all this is to say that it’s not out of the question for Lithuania to be Jewish. 

Extras/Fun stuff

Lithuania loves reading, especially the fantasy/fairy tale genre. It makes them nostalgic without the trauma of reading historical fiction. 

They’re also very musically gifted, and can play the piano, bass, ukelele, and flute.

he’s totally not cishet look how he sits and his colour palette is pretty close to the ace flag so, though since he’s the villain for the decent amount of the game it’s important to be careful with that

I think that his design in combination with how the hobw tends to look feels antisemitic in a way that is recurring in fable that should be addressed more often I really hope if 4 ever happens they change the like good/evil morph pretty considerably, 3 is an improvement though

I don’t have many feelings towards him though as a character, there’s a thing with tone in 3 that I’ll talk about more with reaver that influences this I think, and just in general he sort of exists separately to everyone for most of the game, like he’s the player characters brother you should feel Something but there’s just no like. anything to their interactions. what’s his relationship like with theresa, with walter, with like Anyone, he just monologues at a map!!! do something talk to someone half a character is their interactions!!!! fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so like, I think, fable likes to be funny, the feel it generally goes for is fun and it’s a fantasy game yknow? characters like jack of blades and lady grey (and the crawler kiiiind of? a bit) are obviously bad but because of either the way the game treats them or the way the game feels or the things they do theyre fun villains who I like! reaver in 2 falls into this I think, yes pirates are real but, like knights and stuff there’s. I can’t think how to word it, there’s a difference between historical knights and fantasy knights and reaver is a fantasy pirate, the shadow court stuff is obviously bad but that’s also not real? the tone of 2 is more serious than 1 and I haven’t replayed it in a while so I’d have to play it to know how it lands Exactly. but reaver in 3 hits too real with actual things and lady grey is also evil rich person but the tone of the game carries that where 3 is serious about it and it’s effects that’s like the whole point and you can have a character and a game that does that but you can’t have that character Also be the fun villain because then it confuses things, that’s Also not to say the fun villain can’t be interesting or like metaphors or whatever obviously it’s just The Feel of the thing, fable 3 can have its evil factory guy but reaver isn’t the character for that for so many reasons. I really don’t think I explained this in a way that makes any sense I can try to word it clearer another time maybe

Sorry it took so long for me to get to this message sweetheart!! I do have a few hot witchy tips for combating that good ole’ pumpkin spiced seasonal depression XP

First things first: Get rid of any dust or grime in the area you spend the most time in ^^ Doing things like de-cluttering, washing your sheets, ect ect are actually psychologically beneficial, and us witchy folk have this belief that dust and grim collects excess negative energy and stores it around your space. So get rid of that junk!

Next: Really having any plants growing around brings good energy! They’re a great way to liven up the place (because we associate blue and green with being awake and alert in our brain) and in a spiritual sense they absorb negative energy and release positive energy!

While I do have an EXTENSIVE list of plants that could help- most of them are herbs and flowers that require lots of sunlight, and since it’s the winter season those aren’t likely to be found growing- my current plant recommendations for people dealing with depression are succulents and Aloe! Succulents are so low maintenance they don’t even need direct sunlight or water for days. They thrive off being left alone and basically chilling wherever you put them (plus they can be really pretty!!) Spiritually they’re said to bring love and abundance to you, and even energize your soul! Aloe is a naturally healing plant that can also often be left to its own devices for a long time. Spiritually, aloe is for luck and protection ^^

Other dried herbs that are good for depression are: Chamomile, Lavender, Ginseg, Vervain, and Saint John’s Wart- you can find incense with these in them pretty commonly, or even find oils and put them in one of those funky lil room humidifiers! Otherwise, if you’re lazy like me, you can get candles in the scents, or room sprays at places like Tuesday Morning, Marshals, Target, and Walmart ^^ Even if you’re not down with the witchy stuff- aromatherapy can actually play a very great role in changing your mood and creating some internal peace!

and now, for my favorite part: THEM SPARKLY ROCKS

I’m a huge crystal enby myself. I love me them shiny stones to just have around and elevate the place. I don’t have much science behind this part, other than the aesthetics they bring lets the decor just shine XD Whether you believe in the spiritual aspect of them or not, crystals make fantastic home decor.

Was going to just continue in the notes of the Kase-san post, but I figured I'd make it some asks instead since more people will notice. Just wanted to recommend some manga and anime with queer characters and themes that isn't specifically about being queer, since that's mostly what I see recommended and, if you're like me, you kind of want some casual representation in addition to all of that since it's fun to be a protagonist in things besides adult realistic fiction exclusively. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has such a massive queer fanbase that it deserves to be mentioned even if some of the canonocity is debatable or vague, though it’s generally accepted there’s few characters who are entirely straight. Author confirms DIO as being attracted to men and Jotaro as ace in as many words (he’s a Japanese dude in his 50’s, so he’s never going to use the term, but his wording makes it clear that’s what he has in mind), and also describes one arc as a love story between men.(3/11)

Yugioh GX of all things confirms at the end of the third season in the subs that the main character and his best guy friend are in love, and there’s a canon nonbinary/intersex character who’s (simplest terms) his partner for the rest of the series, but they start out as a villain because reasons (it’s complicated). Fushigi Yuugi has a trans lady as a main character and it’s approached pretty okay if lacking nuance, though keep in mind it was the 80’s and I’ve only watched 1/3 of the show. (4/11)

One Piece’s author confirmed that the Straw Hats are all “in love with adventure” in confirming that none of them are ever going to be interested in romance during the course of the story (aro), and the main character is explicitly shown as aroace in text without using the words, though One Piece will always come with the disclaimer that Oda is bad at women and that the trans characters (there are an impressive amount) are a “complicated” subject at best, so approach with caution. Flip Flappers takes the queer subtext of magical girl anime and just makes it text as blatantly and plainly as they possible can. Everyone knows what Yuri on Ice is by now. Dragon Ball Super (I know, right?) introduced two Saiyan women in the latest arc who are all but stated to be attracted to each other. It’s hard to tell if it’s just queerbaiting or if they really plan to go through with it, but they’re in the arc with the maybe-a-joke maybe-serious lesbian magical girls, too, so maybe?(7/11)

In the “it’s canon but they can’t show it” camp, there’s Girls’ Last Tour about two teenage lesbians who survive the apocalypse together that’s super chill. Been kind of heavy on non-sexual nudity in a couple episodes, though, so at least be aware of that. Cromartie High School is a weird show, and one of the characters is literally, honest to God Freddie Mercury, so that’s probably worth mentioning even if they don’t really reference him being a bi man. Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto’s main character has aroace vibes, and one of his guy friends is explicitly shown crushing on him and another guy. The anime hasn’t gotten to it yet (and might not since it probably won’t be renewed), but Please Tell Me! Galko-chan is about teenage girls talking about life, and sometimes they mention finding other girls attractive (and Sam Jackson). Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun’s main character is implied aro and another character is GNC/genderqueer and bi. (9/11)

One of the newer Tokyo Ghoul manga has a trans dude who wears a binder, though it’s a little shaky in terms of how he’s treated and there’s a chance they might pull the “and he was really a girl all along!” bullshit, but I haven’t read a ton of the part he’s in so I’m not really sure what he’s even up to at this point in time within the canon, so be aware of that and that it’s loaded with gore. Another guy loves the male main character, but see Hisoka for similar representation issues. (10/11)

I’m technically out to my parents but it wasn’t super bombastic, more that I just said “yeah, I’m pan, deal with it”, and they just had to accept that. I only tell people outside my family that I’m pan when the subject comes up and my classmates are generally chill so far. Otherwise, it’s more a whole with a foot out of the closet deal and I try to be as proud of myself as I can be in online spaces.

Anything personal I have to tell my parents is uncomfortable
