The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 21. City

Day 21. City Crossover: Samurai Jack Aku is like that one uncle who made his fortune by pure luck (e.g. winning the lottery) and now feels entitled to give life advice to everyone around him on what to do to be as successful as he is, lol.

This is probably one of my best and favourite entries in this year's Ink Demonth.

The funny thing is that I originally had a different idea here - it was supposed to be a crossover with the Spiderverse, where in Spider-Men City one of the Spider-Man (probably Milo) asks Bendy if he's Venom, and Bendy replies that he is, but better because he doesn't need a host. However, I decided that I didn't want to draw the city from this movie, or even so many Spider-Men (although I love both the movie and Spider-Man himself in almost every version) - so Titatotrix and I did a brainstorming session, which resulted in my very discovery: "of course, Aku City... it was supposed to be Aku City from the beginning!" And we got it! I've always wanted to draw Aku. I've drawn Samurai Jack and more, there was even a short comics from my favourite episode... but never Aku. And he is such a lovely object to draw...

I love Samurai Jack. This is probably still my favourite cartoon. And I deeply regret the ending of the last series (the one from Swim Adult). Seriously, I was really sad that so many well-thought-out episodes and the entire complex plot were ruined with one stupid decision at the end... what a shame. I still love the show, and Jack was one of my big crushes (along with Hercules from the 1995 series and Chase Young from Shaolin Showdown and only from Shaolin Showdown - we don't talk about Chronicles). Plus Aku was dubbed in the original by Mako, one of my favourite voice actors (he did Splinter in my favourite TMNT movie and Uncle Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender) - may he rest in peace.

While making this picture, I had great fun at every stage: sketching, making lineart, colouring... I would love to continue the theme of "uncle" Aku giving good advice to Bendy, but, unfortunately, I don't have time for that anymore. Maybe I'll come back to it someday. By the way, while coming up with this entry - and it was after linearizing the next one, Radio, which you will see in a few hours - Titatotrix and I came to the conclusion that this year's Ink Demonth in my version looks a bit like Bendy's journey through the Multiverse and asking various characters for advice on how to deal with his perpetual depression (and with Joey). Well, it really looks like that. Plus entries where Sammy does something... sammish X"D

I didn't want to do this because I already have one fanchild I created and don't really do anything with that I didn't want to make another one, but I did for shellshocked and I'm gonna make it everyone's problem.

If you all remember one of the AUs I talked about where Miles and Mikey were roommates, this would take place in that world.

Prepare yourselves for a bunch of incomplete ideas that are subject to change.

Okay to start off, this yokai mad scientist managed to steal DNA from Mikey and Miles (don't ask me how) in order to create an army of mutant super-soldiers with the abilities of the web-slinging hero and one of the most powerful mystic users for some reason. I specifically had it be a yokai to justify how they were able know of Mikey and steal his DNA. (I had the Dark Turtles from TMNT 2003 on my mind when thinking of the concept)

Once they get tipped off about what's happening, the two subdue the scientist and destroy any traces of their genetic material when they come across a baby clone already in development. They make the quick decision to free him from his containment and bring him back to their place.

**Unnecessary side note: The kid isn't a newborn. He's at least a few months old, old enough to be able to sit up on his own. I just wanted to clarify that.**

They wait at least a week before they introduce AJ (shellshocked kid) to their families.

They wanted to make sure he was okay and that he would be y'know stable, so they went to the Spider Society (in my opinion they owe Miles) to see if he was healthy and what abilities they could expect he would develop.

They also went to Draxum since he is like the go-to person for all things mystics.

Outside of all those people, Miles' parents are the first to meet AJ.

So officially, his full name is AJ Dario Hamato-Morales.

Originally, I wanted AJ to be short for Aaron Jefferson, but then I thought about it some more and liked the names Amari Jasper (or Jackson) better.

August was also considered a name because I thought it would be cute for his other nickname to be Auggie, but since I've seen August used as a name mainly for April's parents in fics I thought not to.

I guess I should talk about Mikey and Miles relationship. They're in their mid-20s and are roommates (in Brooklyn, NY), but they're also in this weird pre-dating stage where they're practically together but are (not so) oblivious to how they feel and act with each other. I'm just gonna say this all happens before they officially have a first date.

Now to get into my headcanons for AJ:

** Has a Mothra plushie.

** Looks human but possesses some of the traits of both a spider and turtle.

Able to wall-crawl. (Hadn't decided if he has spider-sense)

Able to secrete venom which can temporarily immobilize a person when bitten. Mikey and Miles are the only ones immune to it.

Gets a bit sluggish when really cold.

Does not have shell to retract into but instead bundles up in blankets or hoodies to feel safe.

** Was able to float a lot when younger. When older, has to relearn how to do that whenever he wants to.

** Has a Spider-Bot like the ones from the Disney Junior show Spidey and His Amazing Friends. Gifted one when he was 6 or 7 years old.

I want to say that Miles made the bot but had help from Lunella (yes I'm still on about that rottmntxmarvel crossover).

** Miles remained in contact with Miles 42/Miles G, so AJ knows him as "Uncle Milo."

HOLY SHIT WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THE TMNT X BATMAN II COMIC????

Okay now that my clickbait title has baited your attention, some context. If you're in the TMNT fandom, you probably know about the Batman X TMNT crossover movie. This movie was based on a six issue comic series that ran before it. It's not a one-to-one adaptation: most notably the TMNT turtles are from the IDW verse and dimension hop to Gotham unlike the movie where they already live in the same world.

The comic then got two sequels: "A Knight in New York" and "Crisis in a Half Shell".

And I like the first comic when I read it a few months back, I prefer the movie but it was still a really good comic run. Recently, I got the two sequels.

Now that I have read them, I am surprised I don't hear more people talk about them. Particularly the second comic, "A Knight in New York." Like, it has some really good Donnie angst. And the internet loves Donnie angst!

Warning: Spoilers/ way too long summary below

Very, very, very, long story kinda short. Donnie is feeling self-conscious about his physical abilities and how much he relies on his tech. He's weaker than his brothers and needs to be saved by them all the time, and it makes him feel useless. Yes, he's a genius, but he still needs his brother's help to carry out his plans. On his own, he's nothing.

But he remembers how cool Batman is, how he's both strong and smart, the perfect package! But in an attempt to talk to him, Donnie and Bane swap places for a week. And it only takes Bane a week to conquer New York City.

When Donnie, Batman, and Robin get back to New York, Donnie's devastated by the destruction he's caused. It only gets worse when Bane beats Splinter into a coma. When the gang gets back to the lair, Donnie suggest they use venom to enhance themselves. Batman and Leo say no, that it's too dangerous and they can't cross that line.

But Donnie doesn't listen. He sneaks out and takes the venom, apologizing to his brothers and says that this is the only way. He hulks out and decimates Bane's Foot's Bases ( because by the way, Bane took over the foot). Donnie's about to kill the very Foot Eliet that mocked him for being weak at the start of the story before Batman and Leo burst in to try to calm him down.

During the fight, Donnie vents about how frustrating it is to be so dependent. But now he's powerful and can do everything on his own. He doesn't need Leo's pity anymore, he doesn't need anyone.

Leo and Batman get through to him by showing him Baxter's modified Venom formula, which Donnie finds an exploit in that they can use to cure it. Leo says their true strength is each other. They work best as a team, and they all need each other.

Of course they beat the baddies and Donnie prove's he's still a ninja even with all his tech, and happy endings all around.

Like, hot damn, what a neat arc that I'm surprised nobody talked about before. I do think overall the sequels are weaker than the original run, but there are some cool elements in there, like this arc.

Also the third run has the Batman and TMNT universes mix in the most fanfiction way possible. Like-

Chris Evans returning to the MCU in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY...

And KRAVEN THE HUNTER being the end of the "Sony Spider-Man Universe", their series of Spider-Man adjacent movies about the webhead's antagonists...

Well, that's certainly the end of an era. VENOM kicked off this uneven series of 2000s pseudo-edgy throwbacks back in 2018, a year that was excellent for almost every CBM/superhero movie on the block, from the three MCU entries that year (BLACK PANTHER, INFINITY WAR, ANT-MAN/WASP) to the animated films (INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, the TEEN TITANS GO! movie, INCREDIBLES 2) to the other stuff (Fox's DEADPOOL 2).

The VENOM movies seemed to get by on the buddy movie pairing of Eddie Brock and the symbiote creature, but the same couldn't be said for hacked-to-death-in-post movies like MORBIUS, MADAME WEB, and now KRAVEN... Set to flatline on opening weekend, with abysmal reviews to boot, against a $110m+ production budget. Sony is now focused solely on the fourth MCU Spider-Man movie and BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE. (Yeah, I heard today that Miles G. Morales' voice actor Jharrel Jerome hadn't recorded his lines for BEYOND yet... It's a non-story to me. The movie is far from ready, let's put it aside for the time being.)

I feel like, in addition to the MCU starting to see some big money-losers (like THE MARVELS) and relative underperformers (ETERNALS, QUANTUMANIA), it's another brick pulled from the 2010s superhero movie Jenga tower. That whole Spider-Man Villains Without Spider-Man Universe seemed to be building towards nothing, and to me it always felt like a weird attempt at riding the MCU wave.

The whole appeal of the MCU, to me, was that it took characters' whole worlds and bridged them together. Whether it was the techy world of Tony Stark to the New York neighborhoods of Spider-Man to the cosmic high fantasy of Thor... You get the idea! Spider-Man's world and all the people/villains he knows, that's not a shared universe to me. They would, logically, share a universe w/ Tony Stark and his network, Thor and his network, etc. These movies were little more than just spin-offs of a Spider-Man film franchise that didn't exist. Were they in Tobey-Spidey's universe? Andrew-Spidey's? Some live-action Spidey we hadn't met yet? It was never really clear. And I guess it won't be, unless some internal plan leaks out now that this series is kaput.

So now that leaves, going forward... The MCU (which Tom Holland-Spidey is a part of, unless he got throttled into another universe after AVENGERS 5/6), the nascent DC Universe spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the Matt Reeves Batman "Crime Saga" Whatever-Verse, the MUTANT MAYHEM TMNT universe, and the SPIDER-VERSE series.

I think if those Sony movies leaned harder on the 2000s weird-edgy-too cool angle, they could've really stood out from their contemporaries. Nostalgic for a time that included Ben Affleck DAREDEVIL and Halle Berry CATWOMAN for sure, but still would've been unique to the MCU, the DC movies, and everything else. Hell, MADAME WEB took place in 2003. Would've been perfect... But alas, they did not go this route.

The MCU bringing back Chris Evans has been painted as desperate, given the send-off Steve Rogers got in AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Now unless he's returning as another Johnny Storm variant and not the one that got horrifically nerfed in DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, this... Uh... It shows how last-ditch a lot of this all seems to be. Bringing back Robert Downey Jr., now Chris Evans, teasing this massive crossover of several familiar characters, etc.... All because the plans with Kang really did not work out. This feels like Disney desperately trying to squeeze out one more hurrah from this flailing franchise, instead of going smarter, smaller, and focusing on the characters again. Like, why is the supposedly on-the-ground political thriller CAPTAIN AMERICA 4 going through yet *another* round of reshoots that have apparently ballooned its budget to $375m+??? What the heck is going on here?

It's kinda telling that little DOG MAN from DreamWorks, done on a presumably tiny budget, could probably be one of the more successful superhero movies of next year. How the Gunn-Safran SUPERMAN kick-off of the DC Universe movies (since it started recently w/ animated Max series CREATURE COMMANDOS) performs remains to be seen. I think animated comic book movies will weather this sea-change quite nicely, as MUTANT MAYHEM 2 and BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE should turn out good.

But it's amusing to me how two titans of 2010s comic book movie, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe, are the ones to keep an eye on like this... to see if they can crawl out of the early 2020s maelstrom that claimed the likes of BLACK ADAM, QUANTUMANIA, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS, THE MARVELS, AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM, MADAME WEB, and JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX... And keep going, maybe even adapt and change. DC - both Gunn's universe and the Reeves Bat-verse - looks kinda primed to do that, not sure about the MCU, though.

Primarily Marvel nowadays, specifically Doctor Strange (MCU)! But I've also consistently written for Danny Phantom, and also delved into Pokemon, Teen Titans, TMNT, Warriors Cats and Twilight back in the day... its a lot lol.

Golden Gate's Heroes - a Venom and Ant-Man/MCU crossover from before NWH/Venom 2. It has 2,238 kudos as of posting!

I try to! Sometimes I might not see it or forget to reply if I don't reply right away lol, but I love engagement on my fics and I always want to make sure I thank everyone for reading!

Uh. Hmm. I actually... don't know? Maybe one of my post-Infinity War pre-Endgame Doctor Strange fanfics, like Eidetic or death is an old friend? Just because they end with Infinity War and that was tbh a kinda angsty ending...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably has to be Stars Will Light the Way, tbh. Most of my fics are fairly "happy" tbh but so many are oneshots and anthologies, that this seems like the best pick.

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

I've gotten maybe one "hate" comment, just telling me my pacing was too slow for their liking or something like that lol. But generally, my audience has been very nice!

9. Do you write smut?

Nope!

10. Do you write crossovers?

OH YEAH!! A good chunk of my old fanfics on FFN were crossovers lol. Actually my first several fics were all crossovers I'm pretty sure. I love a good crossover...

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware of... and don't get any ideas folks!

Um... no, I don't think so!

Nope!

14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?

Uhhhh.... hmmm.... its hard to say. I am very much a multishipper - I'll ship one guy with quite a few other characters if the dynamic could even conceivably work. But I also tend to prefer gen-fic or found family fics too...? But um. Uh. All-time favorite ship is probably Eddie/Venom. I will not elaborate further.

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Gosh ok it's this Blue Beetle fic, with Jaime from the Young Justice cartoon swapping places with Jaime from the movie. I just... idk how I want to end it so it's been sitting on my laptop, mostly untouched since like. September or October of 2023. Whoops...

16. What’s your writing strengths?

Idk lol, um... getting into the heads of the characters I write?? I've been told that I can capture certain characters really well, at least.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

17. What’s your writing weaknesses?

Fight scenes can be a little tough for me to write... but also. I procrastinate on writing sometimes, and i'm terrible at planning fics out fully before i start them... so if I don't write scenes and ideas down, they're gone, and then I don't know what to write for my fic, and then the fic never gets finished 🙃

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Eh, depends on the language - I took enough Spanish to be able to pull it off, I think, and I also have a few coworkers who speak Spanish fluently who will make sure I'm doing it right if/when I use it. Other than that, I'm not sure if I trust Google Translate enough to write dialogue in any other language...

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Omg... apparently... it was a crossover between Danny Phantom and Warriors (the books about the cats)... I figured it would be Danny Phantom but that. That is hilarious to me. I really was a Warriors Cats kid....

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

It's gotta be Stars Will Light the Way. Idk man, it just... it may not be as popular as Golden Gate's Heroes, but it's currently the longest fic I've ever written and published and FINISHED, and im so proud of that. The fact that even 400+ people liked it enough to give it a kudos... I wrote that fic for me, so to know others liked it too means the world to me.

Joined the fanfics! Avoided the wars, signed up for the BRING PHANTOM BACK stuff and STILL come to this phandom every once in a while and keep up with any new stuff abt it coming up up until this january when i stumbled across the crossover fics and now im pulled in deep into the phandom again and never gonna make my way out of this grave and im absolutely perfectly okay with it. Made a coze Den out of it. And LOVING the crosoover stories like WOW WOOOOOOWIW WOW WOWWWW

Fucking happy as hell that one of my shows phandom has blown up again and gotten so much awespme shit especially now im on ao3 the last couple yeara (when i first started fanfics i was strictly ffnet cuz i couldnt read the way ao3 formatted. Now im like strictly ao3 since abt moana came out, have my own acct since a couple months after tht binge reading tons of fandoms i switch between constantly, -currently in the Phandom again right now- and happily found the phandom again jan 2023 and going in and out based on what km reading!

Other fandoms ive seen a lot of and gonna come vack to : Moon Knight (anyone knw the nickname for it tell meeee and i hope its an egyptian meme, marvel/ MCU, venom the live movies, BNHA, Megamind, TMNT, Harry Potter and DPhantom and even some standalone DC stuff Thanks to the DPhan/DC vrossovers which is great cuz oof I missed the DC after Marvel blew up as a kid. Alsp SO HAPPY MARTIAN MANHUNTER GETS SOME MORE LOVE. HES MY FAVORITE TO DANNY! ALONG WITH FLASH BARRY/WALLY AND KON EL FROM YJ AND BEAST BOY FROM OG TITANS CARTOON. These fandoms will never get old to me. Also honorable mentions tht I also adore as ogs tht got me into fanfics as a kid: Inuyasha (my first), One Piece & Naruto! :D)

the greatest generation: (2004-2007) joined the phandom while danny phantom was still airing. posted on forums run by butch hartman. probably interacted with the hartman himself. lived through the truephan/antiphan war.

the silent generation: (2007-2009) joined when the show was cancelled. wanted nothing to do with the truephan/antiphan war. probably joined a "bring back danny phantom" protest. read/wrote fanfiction on wattpad.

baby boomers: (2009-2014) the angst boom. dissection fics were everywhere. ghost speak, ghost hunger, etc were popular. lots and lots of gore art. followed haiju's phantom of truth.

gen x: (2014-2017) joined around the time "it's not gay if he's dead", wes weston, pink pants, etc. the phandom was still mostly angsty but starting to gain memes. space au and reverse au were popular. beccadrawsstuff's fankids dominated the nextgen tag.

millenials: (2017-2019) the diddly era. everyone was following diddly-darn-ghost or saw her posts every day on their dash. memes everywhere. has accepted as fact that danny loves guacamole. witnessed the amazing scientific discovery of diddles piddles.

gen z: (2019-2021) like 40% chance of having even watched the show. phandom events are all you know. likely got impersonated at some point. dennys is only known as a fighting zone. food discourse. bullying lexx.

gen alpha: (2021--) phandom reawakening. a lot of phans who left before are slowly coming back. nickolodeon's new strategy of selling nostalgia means that, for the first time since the silent generation, there's an actual chance of new content coming out. every once in a while b*tch h*rtman makes another dumb oc that the phandom improves. wes weston has an entire family tree now. crossovers with marvel and dc are insanely popular. the vlad thirst has gotten stronger, but in a "he's so pathetic" kind of way. lil nas x is one of us.
