ok now that i've loved on all the good bits of reverse 1999 (and there's plenty of good) i gotta touch on the elephant in the room too

the english tl is... iffy at best, but to put it plainly it's not good

i would say the story is largely readable, though there were a few parts i genuinely couldn't parse. main issues are in grammar (particularly tenses) and flow, the writing just doesn't sound organic

but it isn't every line that's a problem, some are fine and some are genuinely good. and the overall story/setting are pretty good (well, decent enough) for a gacha so really the english text just needs a polish

like... a major polish, but i really hope it gets it because the battle system and character art are pretty appealing and i'd hate to see this one tanked by its translation

it is a little annoying to me when ppl compare the drastic reaction some people have had to the localization changes of AAI2 to the localizations of AA4 and DGS because um. those are not the same at all...

im sure there are lots of people being actually annoying and rude about the aai2 localization but to say it's unjustified/silly to have a negative reaction to change on the Caring Very Deeply About Things Autism Website is... annoying!

seeing some of y'all talking about/have talked to some of y'all who have said to me how y'all feel like the dub forced (western especially) masculinity into Yuri, and

yeah.

I left that out of the actual posts themselves because it felt too opinionated for the actual posts (even though you know it's my blog I can do what I want, but I don't want people discrediting me over shit like that), but yeah.

it feels a lot to me like they wanted Yuri to be some cool masculine edgy dude instead of a silly, playful, dorky, emotional, caring man. as if his silliness and emotional side is something to shy away from and isn't "cool enough" for a main character.

it's sad to me because he's such a different person between versions - enough that if I'm interacting with someone who only knows dub Yuri, it genuinely just doesn't feel like we're even talking about the same character sometimes. I want to be talking about the same character, but since some people only know the dub, they only know what the dub made him out to be.

I've seen a variety of things - art, writing, memes, whatever - where there are times I'm genuinely able to be like... that's such a dub Yuri specific thing. like, the way he gets portrayed is something I'm able to look at and be like "that's literally something only dub Yuri would say/do". it's not the fault of people who don't know the original context, but that's why it frustrates me so much - because that's all some people can know contextually (listening to the audio alone gives you a pretty clear indication of how much tone isn't the same between versions, but obviously some people will still be missing context), and the dub changed the experience (and went out of its way to do so) completely for those people. again - not the fault of the people who played the game. it's the fault of the people who were in charge of context/tone and took advantage of that and changed things and made him literally behave differently (because there's... take what's in front of you and translate that, and then there's going out of your way to change what's right there so the context/behavior is no longer the same).

it especially shows to me in interactions with Flynn between the western and JP fandom. the way Yuri behaves interacting with him in fan created media is sometimes vastly different from my experience between both fandoms. again, it's not people's faults who don't know Yuri's original personality, but it is the dub's fault for portraying him that way.

for me it's heartbreaking to see how dub Yuri treats Flynn and how the dub itself narratively treats Flynn. I love the relationship they have in JP and I love them both as characters in JP. like I've said, sometimes I want to punch dub Yuri for the shit he says and the way he behaves. I've never felt that way about Yuri in his original context. I've felt worse for dub Flynn than JP Flynn because I feel like JP Flynn is better cared for by the narrative/characters, but god, poor dub Flynn??? jesus.

the thing is, this comes from a place of strong love for Yuri (and Flynn!) so I hate that they changed things. I always stand by media in its original, purest form, no matter where in the world that media came from. localization absolutely should fix things caused by language barriers and tweak oddly sounding things - sometimes there's no choice! but it's not there to create a newly existing piece of media. it's not there to create a new character plastered on the face of an existing character or to fulfill the loc team's opinion of what that character should be.

it can be difficult - usually impossible - for me to be experiencing JP exclusive content and trying to imagine dub Yuri in those situations (think like, the drama CDs or Rays' content). I know I'm not the only person who feels this way and is extremely bothered by it.

obviously I'm not the be all end all - I'm one person with feelings and opinions, but I just feel very strongly about this kind of thing and I want to share how wonderful of a character Yuri is in his original form. a lot of the clips I posted I posted because I love his silly or caring attitude. I could blab to you about him forever. so, I hope more people will give this man a chance and experience him the way I know him.

the localizing gyaru to dyed hair is so funny because this same universe has people like toya who naturally have bs hair its funny people would see saki and be like thats where they draw the line

also its kinda weird they localized the gyaru thing considering they also mention lolita fashion somewhere else, makes you wonder what level on japanese knowlage they expect the audiance for their japnese idol game to be it seems inconsistant

something i noticed is how EN marketed the game to a very mainstream audience. like maybe this is because vocaloid is a bigger thing in japan so they were worried about how it would perform overseas? so i wonder if that's why they got rid of terms like gyaru and such because while vocaloid fans and animedia/gacha fans would probably understand through some background cultural context, a mainstream audience wouldn't.

that said, they still left lolita in like you said, so i dunno. EN makes questionable decisions sometimes. a lot of their earlier translations were really inconsistent but they seem to have refined the craft a bit now. so i wonder if they decided yeah maybe we can keep some JP terms; maybe they realised that their marketing didn't work and they still pretty much only attracted animedia and vocaloid fans.

In celebration — yet again — of stopping the fire that was going to spread in the Docklands, a dinner party was thrown.

Apparently, all the members of Crown were made to participate, seeing even Jude was here.

Kate: Um, do you know where Alfons is?

Elbert: ...He went out a while ago, and he has yet to return.

Kate: Is... that so...

Elbert: .........

Victor: For the record, I also went out to look for him, as I was hoping I could have him try my special beef stew by any means necessary.

V: But he ended up slipping past me at every corner.

William: Hehe, it’s not every day you let something slip through your fingers like that.

Victor: Gosh, he just always slips away, you know, just like a cat. Not even security around here can stand half a chance.

Ellis: But you caught Jude.

Victor: That I did, though it very much hinged on the negotiation.

Harrison: I can only hope Her Majesty’s right-hand man doesn’t go abusing his power to spend money that’s not accounted for.

Victor: Worry not, Harrison, for I’m throwing out my pocket money!

Jude: And anyone with a workin’ brain cell’s gonna question how that cash made it to yer pockets.

I wasn’t sure whether they got along swimmingly or horribly, but regardless everyone in Crown was as lively as could be over dinner.

And usually, Alfons... and I would be there, laughing with them, but somehow today seemed to feel a little different.

V: And, he is without a doubt a pivotal figure in the ‘purification’ club.

William: The club itself comprises around a dozen parliament members.

W: And they hold the eugenic ideology that the people in the slums should be killed as they are inferior.

W: To fulfill that mission, they go undercover and conduct massacres on the impoverished, proclaiming it as an act of ‘purification.’

(...That’s just outright cruel...)

I had seen this coming, but when I actually thought about it,

the fact that there were people who would realize this baffled me.

Elbert: ...If such is the case, have they been condemned already?

William: That was the plan.

Victor: We did already make attempts to pass judgment on Lord Goa——but we weren’t able to do so.

Kate: What...!?

(They were unable to do so?)

Victor: He was absent from a meeting that he was supposed to take part in. And not only that, there wasn’t even a seat prepared for him there.

William: Victor is Her Majesty the Queen’s right hand.

W: There is not a single piece of information that’s not clear in Her Majesty’s grasp. And likewise, Victor has quite a wide breadth of knowledge regarding any information.

W: And yet, we were given false information. All that to say——

Jude: There’s someone spoutin’ off false information to the Queenie.

Leaning back on his seat, Jude finished the statement.

Jude: N’ that someone’s gotta be close to her, or it woulda been off the table as a load o’ pork pie before it reached her.

Kate: No way... just who would do such a thing?

William: If they are able to handle the information of the House of Lords, I imagine this person would have a higher standing than them.

W: It would seem likely that a member of the Privy Council has some involvement.

Kate: ...The Privy Council...?

Victor: Indeed. They’re formally known as ‘Her Majesty the Queen’s most honorable Privy Council.’

After dinner, I called out to the back that was about to leave the dining room.

I let out the breath I had been holding before looking up at Roger’s face.

The place he took me to was the empty lounge.

Roger: Yeah. Especially for the ‘Mirror,’ the records from the royal family are almost all blank, so that’s why there’s a lot where those came from.

R: If we take a good look through the past documents one more time, we might be able to find something new.

R: I had always set my sights on the Cursed ones themselves,

R: but I can’t say I’ve read much through the lens of ‘whether people remember or not.’

Kate: ...!

Hearing those words, I felt a small ray of hope.

Roger: Well, all that said, we might come up as empty handed as we are now.

Kate: And that’s completely fine. So let’s look together!

Roger: Count me in. I’m free up until whenever we’re having another meeting about the ‘purification’ club.

R: And since we’re looking up stuff about Cursed ones, I’m pretty sure this would count as doing your job as fairytale keeper too.

Roger raised a closed fist, extending it before me.

Roger: But since it’s already pretty late today, we’ll be diving in tomorrow if we’re doing this.

Kate: Roger that!

With that, I bumped my own fist lightly against his.

Then the next day rolled over, and when we finished breakfast, Roger and I were heading to the basement when——

Alfons: Oh?

It would seem Alfons had just returned to the castle, and so we happened to run into each other.

Kate: Ah... w-welcome back.

Roger: Hey there, Al.

Seeing him, I remembered how we had parted ways after I was told that I was ‘a nuisance,’ and my heart made an unpleasant sound.

Alfons: Well I’ll be, are you on your way to a most friendly outing, the two of you?

Kate: Ah, no, we’re...

Roger: What, curiosity got you piqued?

When I tried to deny his claims in a panic, though, Roger wrapped his arm around my shoulder.

Kate: Roger!? What are you doing—

Roger: Alright then, let me fill you in. We’re gonna be spending the whole entire day holed up in a locked room, just the two of us. Let’s get along now, yeah?

(Wait a minute, with the way you’re acting and talking, Alfons will end up getting the wrong idea...!)

Alfons: Oh my, is that so? It would appear you’ve found yourself a lovely playmate while I was not around. I’m happy for you, Miss Kate.

Kate: ...

Seeing him so indifferent toward all this, my heart, already broken, now throbbed more in pain.

He spared a single side glance before Alfons tried to leave.

(It’s not as though I wanted to make him jealous. But...)

Alfons: ——I see you don’t really hold that thing called ‘love’ for me.

—— End flashback ——

(I would hate it if those words actually end up becoming the truth to Alfons.)

Kate: ...I still very much like you.

Alfons: ...Come again?

Roger: ......... [surprised]

Kate: Even if this all amounts to a nuisance to you... this is the ‘truth’ for me, so.

Alfons: .........

Kate: Okay, we’re going, Roger.

I felt if I looked at Alfons any longer, my heart would hurt so much I could hardly bear it...

and, as though running from that pain, I ran down the staircase to the basement.

Alfons: .........

Roger: Pfft, haha... I feel like I haven’t seen you so dumbfounded in forever.

i feel a bit bad for bursting the theory crafting, but though they did accidentally remove a whole text box without moving the dialogue in it to a previous one, the part about colette being the seventh chosen was never there in the japanese script in the first place: you can check it by yourself by watching gc gameplays in japanese (15:50)

my assumption re:the missing text box is that that's just an accident from the remasters being based in the ps2 version of the game. that text box, as you can tell by watching the video, was added during the game's location process. something happened there that they couldn't just add the rest of the text without it i suppose, maybe character limit? interestingly enough, that text book was never there in the spanish gc edition in the first place either, so it just ommits the last part from remiel's lines instead

i'd be willing to think the location team made a mistake with an old part/version of the script (unused stuff is often still left in the gamedata, and just as often it gets localized, it just goes unused and you can't see it through normal means) but considering i never heard of anything similar, it seems to me this is just a typical case of mistranslating instead. it's not the first time there's a mistranslation in a tales game for whatever reason and it won't be the last one

tl;Dr mistranslated so not canon, feel free to disregard it. besides, as you pointed out, it wouldn't make sense with the number of floating coffins in the tower. that, and that the lineage of mana isn't a recent thing in-game either

so this text box got eaten in most ports, but in the original gc release, Remiel says Colette is the seventh Chosen

Asking specifically bc of Malleus cause I can't tell anymore if he has any more new cards bc HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A 100 DISNEY ANIVERSARY CARD IN THE WIKI I USE 😭

Like compared to everyone else in Disanomia, he has 12 cards (in the wiki I use) and then Lilia has 17 cards 💀

Cause I think Malleus has a Bean's Day card as well, but that could just be a fanmade one, I don't have JP twst nor ENG twst anymore so I can't confirm it myself urhghrhevw 🫠

Malleus doesn't have a Beans Day card, so that would've been fanmade! and the 100 anniversary cards are actually the new round of birthday cards, so most of the characters don't have 'em yet -- Malleus should be getting his in a couple of days, when his birthday event starts! oh god my keeeeeys

I think the wiki.gg stays pretty up to date? it looks to me like they have everything that's currently up through JP, at least. :O I did go through and do a quick count just because I couldn't believe Malleus only had 12 cards, but. he really does have the least...defeated only by Silver with 13...astonishing. we need his gargoyle club wear immediately.

Meanwhile, there's only a few short days until the first Saturday of this new month, which means it's time for another art party hosted by my guild, Verdant Shield [VS]!

For those who aren’t familiar with art parties, they’re a concept carried over from Final Fantasy XIV - in-game get-togethers for artists/writers/creatives of all types to hang out, chat, and create together! Get your favorite character/look together, head to the location, find someone that catches your eye, and create! Afterwards, everyone posts their creations in a shared tag (ours is #VSArtParty) so others can see, interact, and share! Tl;dr: the ‘goal’ of an art party isn’t to be drawn, but to draw others, and share with the community!

Location Information:

Coddler's Cove is the cute little jumping puzzle hidden behind the oft-contested quaggan settlement of Okarinoo in southeastern Timberline Falls. Since I don't think I've ever seen Okarinoo Waypoint uncontested, here's a quick outline of how to get into the JP area via Coil Waypoint instead - the entrance to the settlement is underwater, but the entrance to the JP itself is above the surface once you get in! Tokyo Debunker: Towards the Annivesary

⚠️Warning: long read

⚠️Disclaimer:

1) Despite the seemingly endless stream of complaints at the beginning, venting is not my purpose in writing this. I intend this to be a personal reflection on playing Tokyo Debunker (TKDB) in general. Therefore, I'll try to be as civilised as possible, even when writing about aspects of the experience that I dislike the most.

2) This post also mentions other joseimuke games -> Twisted Wonderland (TWST), Akuneko (AKNK), Yumekuro (YMKR), etc.

3) I mostly watched the reactions of the JP fandom on X/Twitter, so if you find that some opinions don't match what you usually see in the international fandom, that's probably why.

I'll start by summarising TKDB's existing problems, things that mostly will stand out to a new player. Almost everything I'm going to say has already been said by someone else, and this video by RoseEmber on YouTube has succinctly pointed them all out, and people have mostly forgotten/forgiven it, thanks to the highly intriguing plot, it seems?

Still, I'd like to say them in my own words, so here they are.

1) Right off the bat is the use of artificially generated images as backgrounds. I have no way of being 100% sure that they're AI. In the unlikely event that they were drawn by actual human artists, this suspicion will turn out to be nothing more than slander. What started the suspicion for me was that the general atmosphere of the backgrounds reminded me of images created in Midjourney, which I have observed is often used/preferred by Japanese AI users as an image generation tool. What added to the suspicion was how the company handled calling out. What cemented my stance on the use of AI art to be abhorred in TKDB is a particular background: Rui's bar. I wouldn't have known its origin if it wasn't for RoseEmber's video. In my opinion, the company really shouldn't get away with this and should replace it with another completely original background.

There's no way they can afford to change just one background, I know. If they change Rui's bar, I am sure people will protest and demand that they change everything to human-drawn backgrounds. I have no objection to that, although I have little more to add. I'll come back to that later.

Anyway, the decision to use artificially generated images in Tokyo Debunker will always be the biggest setback and irony, considering it's one of the most localised joseimuke games (in several languages, no less). International fandom, from what I have observed so far, is far more merciless when it comes to this particular issue, so the effort that goes into localisation is wasted in the face of blatant act of cutting corners.

2) Next is something I find neither positive nor negative, but still a problem: the advertising. Now, the company behind TKDB is notorious for its aggressive, deceptive, flame marketing tactics. I find the ads hilarious myself, although I understand why people were so keen to get rid of them from their Twitter timeline. They're gory sometimes, and if you put headphones on, the music is disturbing. The comments I read often mentioned how persistent the ads were, despite having been flagged as uninteresting. I don't know how they got there, and I never got them on my TL, so I went out of my way to YouTube to see how annoying they were. In addition to the above, the fact that the ads DON'T REPRESENT the game at all is what gets me. Like... it's half funny, half upsetting. I mean, what the hell, dev? Your potential users are not looking your way because of this unnecessary circus. (Again, the RoseEmber video gave me some valuable insight into the ad issues).

3) Next: Character design. The said design includes their characterisation, not just what the eye can see. This particular issue puzzled me at first, but unlike my discomfort with Rui's bar BG, or the BG in general, I've come to the decision to let go and enjoy. Anyway, here are my two cents about the characters.

I don't even play A3, but the moment I saw Towa, Misumi's image immediately came to mind. Jin and Haru, if you're familiar with Hypnosis Mic, will remind you of the MCD duo. Tohma's personality shouldn't be as evocative as Twst's Jade, but, well.

Once a suspicion starts, it floods.

Kaito, the guy from Kimetsu no Yaiba (whose name I've forgotten as I don't follow the series too closely). Hyde, the guy from Jujutsu Kaisen. Moby, Koro-sensei from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu.

Having made it so far into case 61, I can say I look at them with zero negative feelings now, helped by the fact that I've found that they're not just cheap rip-offs. Their inspiration may be borderline imitation, but they're so damn well made that I can't get angry.

All but one: Haku.

He leaves me with mixed feelings, as I can't get over the fact that he's a borderline rip-off the way I can with other characters. Haku, as most players probably already know, is 'inspired' by Mikage of Yumekuro, a game which sadly ended its service in September 2024. I can imagine that people who see Haku before Mikage will find him a better version than Mikage. I don't blame them. Still... Mikage is a very distinctive character, and even though I am not a big fan of him myself, I still find him endearing because of those characteristics. His mannerisms, his character voice (he uses omae-san like Haku!) and his personality in general. They're designed to be laissez-faire characters who prefer to avoid trouble, quiet but mysterious in a way that draws players in emotionally, kind and competent in a way that no one else can be. As if that were not enough, Haku belongs to Hotarubi, a dormitory that evokes traditional Japan, while Mikage belongs to Tokohana, a guild with strong Japanese aesthetics and sensibilities. Since Yumekuro stopped its service, it feels like Mikage died and was somehow resurrected as Haku in TKDB...

Okay, enough sap, back on track.

4) Worldbuilding is next. OK, we can get straight to the point with this one. A game where the player has to live in a rundown building of a certain prestigious school on a tiny island with seven dorms where the fourth years have to go off campus or something... Hmm, sounds familiar. Yeah, no surprise, Twisted Wonderland. A game where the player has something to do with a mysterious ring and demon power with its shady contract system? Akuneko. I'm not as offended by this as I should have been (you know what they say, copying from a paper is plagiarism, but copying from so many to make it your own is research or something), but I won't blame TWST and Akuneko fans if they find this part problematic to the point where they refrain from continuing to play or even trying the game.

5) Finally, the gacha. Hmmm, I really can't say. I don't dislike the system in general, and I'd like to thank the people who spend more than I do, because it's thanks to you that the game, or any game with a similar system, can continue. Yes, yes, problematic, predatory practice, I'm aware of that. I'll come back to this later.

Okay, that's all for the less savoury aspects of Tokyo Debunker, I guess?

Despite all the problems, it turns out that Tokyo Debunker has raked in money in numbers that Romeo would approve of. It ranks fairly consistently high on the joseimuke games list.

It's obvious that one of the many reasons for this is its harsh, harsher than other games, gacha rates, which has probably encouraged players to keep pouring money in. Is it the biggest reason? Probably yes. Is it the only one? No, it can't be. I have some faith in humanity that the majority of people won't spend money just because a 2D character has a pretty face.

For me, and for a lot of people whose opinions I've spied on X/Twitter, the most important reason they're hooked on Tokyo Debunker is the highly intriguing plot, so let's start TKDB's good points with that one.

1) Again, highly intriguing plot points. Masterful execution. Engaging delivery. TKDB has no event or personal story (only chat) like other games, but its main episodes are done right on so many levels that I have nothing but praise for the writer(s) and the people in the production staff. I can only confirm that @/sakugintani (X/Twitter) is the writer of episode 13, but it looks like it's safe to say that they're all written by actual human writers...? At least I hope so. I think there's a problem with the music being used... I don't know the details, so I won't put it in the problems section above. Instead, I just want to point out how well the background music they chose for the scenes and events in the story fit together. I do find a small problem with the SFX, that the volume is not consistent, but it's too small a problem to pay attention to.

2) Interesting, wide range of characters. Despite what I said about the designs? Yes. An imitation of classical painting will still sell for a high price, as it turns out. They're written pretty decently, whether it's as individuals or their personal relationships with each other.

3) Localisation. Just wow. Really commendable that they employ actual translators of many languages and then allow players to switch languages with the simple press of a button. I mean, I love Twisted Wonderland, but it's really disappointing that they have separate apps/servers for separate languages... Something to do with the copyright thing or something? Akuneko, Mahoyaku and Bungou to Alchemist have no official English localisation, while Touken Ranbu's is finished. Anyway, this part in particular is the very opposite of a deal breaker for me.

(On a related note, I played TKDB because Minami (@/sakaimii on X/Twitter), who's part of the TKDB English loc team, posted about it. I don't know her personally, but I followed her because she used to work on the unofficial translation of Mahoyaku (mahoyakueng.wordpress). I find her (and her team's) work enriching and delightful. Glad to see the same for TKDB)

What else? Uh, I can only think of three... Well, that's just my personal opinion anyway. People may find other discouraging/encouraging aspects that I haven't listed here. There are some aspects I have deliberately left out, such as the UI, the raid system, etc., simply because I have no opinion on them at all.

The overall gameplay experience generates mixed reactions, ranging from boring / too idle, with the case impossible to solve without SSR cards, which becomes increasingly true as you progress through the levels. I have no problem with idle games, quite the opposite in fact. The reliance on SSR cards, on the other hand, is a hindrance to the enjoyment of the game.

Now, why am I writing all these things out, especially when most of them seem to have been left behind?

Because I want more people to get to know Tokyo Debunker. I want more content, I want to see it talked about, I want to read and interact with other people as it progresses, and I want to see the game itself flourish for a long time.

Sadly, that's going to be quite difficult if a lot of people are put off as soon as they start. I've already seen so many people driven away by the AI images (rightly so) and even before that by the adverts. I read one JP user commenting that no matter how much they liked TKDB, it wasn't something they could boast about or be as open about as other games because it made a lot of people feel uncomfortable.

At this point, I think there have been a few murmurs here and there along the lines of "the ads suck, but the game is actually great!" I can only hope that this will help people to try Tokyo Debunker and like it.

STILL.

It will leave us with a very undesirable situation if the player base grows but none of the problematic aspects change for the better. If a game with AI images and borderline rip-off elements does well, it will only encourage other companies, especially the smaller ones, to follow in the same footsteps. That's why I hope that the company is seriously considering a change, especially in terms of proper advertising and images of human artists (since nothing can be done about the rip-off aspect).

Am I asking for too much? Probably. Who knows. I don't have any insiders to ask about the company's financial situation and whether or not my request will put a dent in their wallets. My instinct is to say no, it can't be? Surely it must be in their budget by now to hire human artists to create backgrounds and real advertisements?

Then again, who knows. A game like this costs a lot. Potential users usually don't want a company to cut corners, especially if it's so sharp that it puts an end to someone's livelihood. From a business point of view, however, some corners have to be cut, because if they aren't, the other option is EOS, because it doesn't make enough profit, maybe not even enough to cover the cost of production. There are some Joseimuke games that had to end before they even reached their first anniversary. The obvious solution is to cut corners where it hurts as few people as possible, if possible none.

How?

I don't know 😭

One solution that immediately comes to mind is not to have the story fully-voiced, but even I can find myself protesting at the prospect of this ill-conceived solution.

Now about the gacha in TKDB. I mentioned how hard it is. Specifically, you need to pull 500x to get the pity/guaranteed SSR card featured in the banner. In TKDB, a single draw costs 200 gems, but 10-draw cost 1,980 gems. If you want to reach the 500 count, does that mean you have to do the 10-draw 50 times? I haven't had a chance to test this, but I think it's safe to assume that's the case (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!).

50 pulls of 1,980 gems will cost you a total of 99,000 gems (100,000 if it is a single pull, but why would anyone do that). If you buy from the regular gem shop and choose the most expensive option, 5000 gems for 10,000 JPY, you will have to part with around 198,000 JPY. Convert that into your local currency and that's the estimated price of a single SSR card of your choice.

Okay, you don't have to spend that much, I know. TKDB regularly gives out a decent amount of free gems, and they have several back-up shops that, if you use them wisely, will give you more valuable gems for your money. (They are a little overwhelming, by the way).

I'd like to do a detailed comparison with TWST, Mahoyaku, Akuneko for the mercy system in each of these games, but let's save that for another article.

The fact that you need several SSR cards to solve the case and unlock more chapters seems to be a deal-breaker for some people. The more cases you solve, the more impossible it becomes to play without SSR cards. At the moment I'm playing on two servers, one where I pull once I've collected 1,980 gems and the other where I do the opposite. On the latter, I'm actually able to get to case 53 with just a single SR Darkwick Chic card and 8 R cards (the casual outfit ones). It's starting to get too hard, though. It's not a walk in the park when you're f2p in TKDB, unless you're very lucky.

(On another note, I have heard that TWST is just as tough for some people who struggle a lot to get through OB combat, especially book 6? I don't remember having too much trouble with it, so I can't really compare it myself)

As I said, I don't have any particular negative feelings about the gacha system, provided it's done properly. In theory, it's a good system that allows people to contribute according to their own financial situation. It allows all players to enjoy the content equally, while the company still makes a profit. However, it needs to be done in such a way that if a company gets carried away and consumed by too much greed, there will be nothing but resentment.

With the system that TKDB has in place now, I can only hope that existing players don't get tired before management can focus on and implement improvements to the overall system and UX, and the only way to do that is to keep the current level of excitement generated by the main storyline steady, even increasing, while applying a fix where it needs one.

Alright, I've said my piece. That's all I have to say, I think.

To close this long, somewhat anticlimactic writing off, I would like to wish TKDB a long and successful journey. I hope that all honour students will be able to see TKDB grow into something better as we walk with it ❤️

FOR REAL THOUGH. PLEASE JUST DO ME A FAVOR AND READ MMJ MAINSTORY...... not only its a good source of szai cocaina you get to experience the entire mmj mainstory. i was normal before mmj mainstory and i was less normaler after mmj mainstory.

it simply went even more downhill when i read tenshi no clover. genuinely the one event story that first made me cry (second one was ice drop event but thats a bit biased)

okay now lets get to the main meat of it. szai.

admittedly i was kind of normaler early on but one of my tipping point was Chasing the radiance event especially chapter 7. please read/watch it. please. this specific chapter sent me into my trip of insanity when it comes to szai. it also opened my eye to specific scenes in their side stories/mmj mainsto that i skimmed early on especially bc im a jp only player so fan tls may not be super accurate back then 💔

to start off, airi was a girl that was often made fun of for being tomboyish, and seeing idols for the first time made her feel a glimmer of hope that maybe she can also bring hope to other people. she finally manages to reach her goal and became an idol after several of failed auditions (very deserved especially after her hard work) while shizuku became an idol purely out of luck from the idol grand prix context her friends convinced her to join 😭😭 From the start their relationship feels a little bit doomed with how jealousy is kind of unavoidable from airis side. but against all odds, you get to see airi go to shizuku and cheering her up by giving shizuku her towel and telling her to wipe those tears especially with such a pretty face like hers (MACHINE CLANG CLANG RACK SFX) they are so crazy for this. especially when you realize that shizuku kept the towel until now. (the towel is her area upgrade item)

from this point, airi thought nothing much of shizuku yet other than her being her new rival (and that shes rly pretty) but shizuku sees airi as her main reason to keep going in this idol stuff at that time, and that was enough.

(okay purely for this next part im forgetting a bit so do remember it may not be fully accurate 🙏)

after training minori for awhile, szai went thru a mini divorce arc where airi was telling minori that being an idol isnt all fun and games and that minori should consider quitting, continuing on with how she flopped in the industry bc she was more popular as a reality show figure. but shizuku disagreed and kept saying how airi was an idol through and through and that she shouldn't have quit, but that just tipped airi off and she shouted at shizuku, unloading all her pent up jealousy that she had for awhile now. iconic as hell scene in the most angsty way possible.

u can easily tell this wasn't received well by shizuku. at all. airi you done fucked up. shizuku left her idol group the next day.

(addendum i forgot to add. shizuku truly believed that airi was the first and if not, the only person who sees shizuku as shizuku hinomori herself, without all the idol filter that people plastered on her. so when airi admitted that she was jealous w shizuku getting everything good in the industry, that basically broke shizuku. (color of myself is a nice one to read when it comes to this 🙏 also the i am we are event is a crazy good conclusion to shizukus current arc))

at this point airi realizes just how much shizuku was influenced by her past actions without her fully knowing about it. girl you done fucked up.

this scene is still one of the biggest and strongest kryptonite for szai fans. especially with what happens after.

after confronting shizuku about her choice knowing full well its airis fault, airi, angry at herself, goes immediately to cheerful*days training place (she knows the place since theyve kinda shared the spot iirc) while the rest of mmj follows. she started threatening arisa and almost threw punches but she held back and told the rest of cheerful*days that shizuku is more of an idol than everyone in the room (i may be hallucinating this one. do lmk)

they finally leave the place, and both apologies to each other. at the same time, they both admitted that they were each others idol

and then shizuku goes to tackle hug airi. what the queer

that only concludes the mainstory section btw. upon realizing it may be too much of a recap instead of actual explanation ill be brief w the rest of it (keep in mind i dont read EVERY szai story, just ones i was made aware of bc im playing on jp and story content is a bit harder to see/consume)

1. chasing the radiance ch7. airi yet talks again about how shizukus hands are slender and elegant while hers are short and chubby (she compared her hands to a manju) and shizuku was mad at her about this and went on a long tangent about how airis gentle hands were the ones who pushes minori and shizuku forward when they think they couldn't.

this is probably the fifth time ive read this story and it still gets me. i hate these fruitsssss. please read the full chapter ive linked it near the start this chapter is so special to me.

2. my ideal idol (airi 5, jp only event for now)

this card was a blast to the past; pre-mmj szai again.

we start off with present mmj getting ready for their turn in the joint performance with a new junior idol group that they were paired with. airi was a bit nervous and shizuku noticed it. so she offered to do something that would hopefully lessen the nervousness for both of them. shizuku softly puts her head on airis back and whispered several word of encouragements. shizuku reminisces to the past.

pre-mmj szai. shizuku was very nervous as she was waiting for her first performance ever as an idol. airi was also there, and it was going to be her first too. airi shows up to say hi to shizuku but she noticed that shizuku was really nervous and at the verge of crying. airi knew she had to do something and told shizuku to turn around, shizuku did. shizuku lets out a little surprised yelp as she feels airis hands and head pressing against her back. she could hear airi muttering some encouragement but we never get to hear what the words were, only that shizuku thought about how warm airis hands were. (i need to be euthanized)

back to the present, shizuku says that she hopes that this gesture can somehow "repay" for what airi did to her back then. i think im losing it. sorry

I don't want to be political on the TL, but I think this has to be said because for Americans, we are about to be entering even darker times.

Alongside the ban of TikTok yesterday, apps like Capcut and Lemon8 have also been banned. Gaming apps and companies are being banned as well, but I do not have a list as of yet.

This is not the beginning of censorship, but it is worsening now more than before.

About Tiktok:

This ban is not about TikTok but our freedom of speech. Even if you do not use TikTok or like it, this affects you too! They label the app as a national security threat and instill the idea that millions of American's data is being collected and used by the chinese government.

This is a fear based propaganda tactic that they weaponize against Americans for essentially anything they do not like. The false claims, surrounding China and communism that they conditioned American citizens believe, makes it easy for them to do this.

Do not fall for these tactics, henceforth, and become informed on your own. Using your own discernment, instead of basing your opinions from what you hear, is important in these times.

We will likely be seeing more of these things happening from this point forward and, especially, when Trump is inaugurated on January 20th (Tomorrow)

Why they are doing this:

There are many reasons our Congress and government officials are applying these unjust policies.

1: Unification with other nations.

They do not want us to be individual thinkers and to be able to think critically. TikTok has been a way, for many around the world, to connect and share their experiences. This is worrying to our government because people are awakening to how corrupt our power system is.

The rest of the world is not like this. We are given the illusion of choice and freedom, but we do not have a say in anything at the end of the day. And the saddest part is that the rest of the world already knows this.

We realize that we do not have universal healthcare, we have poor food and water quality, lack of education outside of our own country, the highest disease/crime/obesity rates, and overall poor standard of living. We are trillions in debt as a nation and 2% of the nations wealth is shared between the middle and lower class.

Americans have to work multiple jobs to pay for rent, taxes and groceries. We have no paid maternity leave, childcare and staggering homelessness rates. Gun violence is prevalent in schools where elementary aged children are risking their lives to get a subpar education that teaches no real life skills and our government is heavily militarized making it virtually impossible to protest these things without fear of being killed.

2: Money. America is a corporation. Not a country.

We live in an Oligarchy. Which means the people are controlled by the 1% who own most of the nations wealth. People like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Andy Jassy, Black Rock, Vanguard, JP Morgan.... Etc.

This also means that these people are capable of swaying political decisions and people in power with money. Often lobbying their interests to push bills against the will of the people and without the consent of.

All of our Congress have stocks in Meta. Meta is owned by Mark Zuckerberg and the apps that he controls are Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Which, by the way, if you read the privacy policy they are doing the same thing that they are claiming China is doing. TikTok is banned in China and has been! This is another tactic to shift blame.TikTok is owned by Mr. Shou Chew, a Singaporean man.

Stocks in Meta are not valuable if people are not using the apps. This makes TikTok a competitor app. Since it is not American owned, they cannot control the narrative or the revenue and these stocks are becoming worthless. Mr. Chew would not sell the app to American corporations.

As a side note, on TikTok, the day before the ban, I was getting ads for Facebook and Instagram and there is now a link to Tiktok on facebook. I fear that Mr. Chew has caved as he said in his last video that he has been negotiating with Trump to have the app reinstated. This is NOT a victory. This means our government won and it should be avoided at all costs along with all Meta apps. Please delete them and leave 1 star reviews. Tank their ratings and crash their stocks.

3: Project 2025

I am sure some of you have heard of this by now. I've been trying to inform people about this since last year when the heritage foundation was making their agenda to pass far, right wing religious laws to suit their narrative. They are a Christian nationalist group against the rights of all humans who do not follow their ideology.

If you haven't heard of Project 2025, you can read online what the project entails. That means banning of media such as games, pornography, women's right to healthcare and safe abortion and strict laws imposed within the lgbtqia+ community. If you have not heard of Rednote or Little Red Book, it is a completely Chinese owned app that is similar to Pinterest, Tumblr, and TikTok all in one format.

This app has been wonderful and the Chinese are overjoyed to have us there. Their government even warmly invited us to take refuge. I've personally observed instead of interacting so far.

BUT

There are many who share their thoughts on their social media platform being overrun by foreigners and diluting their carefully curated experience on the app.

Do take note that IF you decide to go there, it is NOT your home. You must abide by their laws and be kind.

1. Be courteous and use translations in both English and Traditional Chinese if you pose. DEEPL is the most accurate for translation.

2. They do NOT have to accommodate to you and your needs. Do not go in acting entitled and causing drama.

3. There will be major cultural differences and trying to understand them rather than being offended is best. We all live by different standards and they are generally curious about you and your life! So be nice.

4. TikTok slang and Brainrot is not acceptable. They think we're funny, but people are already commenting inappropriate things under videos of attractive people (and there are many attractive people there.) Brainrot will actually get you banned.

5. Observe for a little to see what kind of content they post. You can even make friends. Most of them want to learn English and are willing to teach you Mandarin.
