Season 5, Episode 6: The Shrine
I said I had to gather my thoughts before I would be able to write something coherent. I still don't know if I can do it justice. It's weird, but I hesitate to call The Shrine my favorite episode because it's so devastating. It's very shippy, it has phenomenal acting from everyone, the story is heartbreaking, it should be perfect - but it just hurts so much. If this is my favorite episode, what kind of masochist am I? (Don't answer that, that was rethorical.)
I'm placing this under a cut because this is gonna be long.
Tumblr media
The cold open on this one is just brutal. Rodney is already pretty far gone, and he calls himself "Mr Rodney McKay" instead of Dr, because "doctors are smart, and he's not smart anymore". To know what's happening to you, to slowly lose your mental capabilities and to be able to still process what's happening, that's cruel. And then he's calling for John, and that's when I had to pause the video for the first time because the tears were already coming. The title sequence hadn't even started.
Fuck.
I lost my grandmother to Alzheimer's a couple years ago. She had a slow and steady decline and thankfully, it was one of those cases where she just forgot more and more, but without the mental anguish. She wasn't panicking, or aggressive, or even agitated. Just a smiling, sweet old lady, who in the end didn't remember how to sit or eat or breathe. When she died, I couldn't cry. I was too busy consoling my mother and aunt at the funeral. The first time I cried was when I rewatched The Shrine, years later. It just shook something loose in me. It's also the point where I decided that if I ever got diagnosed, and was still in a state to do something about it, I would end my life on my terms. I'm not putting anyone through that.
I remember Kate Hewlett saying in an interview that a lot of people on set where crying during those scenes because they had family members with dementia, and that she had to leave the room at one point because it hit close to home for her too.
At first I thought it was mean that everyone was like, "Yeah I realized something was wrong when Rodney was being nice to everyone", but then I thought, no, that's actually a good point. Because his friends were uncomfortable with alternate universe Rod (who was too suave and cool) and they're uncomfortable with a Rodney who is uncharacteristically nice. They love him as he is, not a polished version.
I know everyone is giving Dr Keller shit for not wanting to try the Shrine, but I really think it's because she's a doctor. I work with doctors, and almost weekly I have discussions about respecting a patient's advanced directive. I've had a doctor wanting to install a gastric tube in a patient who was at the end of their life. We had the advanced directive that CLEARLY stated they didn't want that. When I confronted the doctor, she was almost angry. "But they will starve! I can't let them starve!" Yes, you can, and you will, and you have to. The hardest thing for a medical doctor is to have to sit back and not be allowed to do something that might help the patient. I think that where she's coming from. There are treatments to be tried, and if Rodney is taken to the Shrine, all those other options stop. I still think she was wrong and I don't like her approach, but I think it's an explanation why she was acting the way she was.
Tumblr media
And then we have Rodney running to John's room in the middle of the night because of course that is the first and only place he'd go. It hurt to watch him be so frantic and desperate. And John is right there for him, grounding him, telling him, I'm not going anywhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beer On The Pier. Yes, you have to write it like that because this scene is a fixed point in time and a goddamn cornerstone of this ship.
Rodney, knowing this is probably the last night he'll be this lucid, wants to say goodbye. And John doesn't let him. Because Rodney's stuck with him until the end. He's not going to turn away, no matter how ugly it's going to get. The very thought of saying goodbye is so foreign to John that he doesn't even want to discuss it. "That's final."
(Also, just for aesthetics alone, the night shots of the city are beautiful.)
I'm trying to be a bit less rambly, but what can you do when you have this masterpiece of an episode?
In the cave, when Rodney is intense pain, John has his arm around him the whole time and doesn't let go until he is himself again.
I love how everyone is so caring and surrounds him with love.
And ugh, the surgery - with fucking power tools. Barbaric. But necessary. But man, to hold your friend's head in your hands, holding him still, while a literal drill is going into his skull? I'd have passed out.
The only tiny little thing that was a bit jarring was Rodney's confession to Jennifer at the end, and just because for me, it came a bit out of left field. But I am nothing if not good at ignoring things that I don't like, so I'll just refer to fanfics that fix this. No harm done.
And finally.
Tumblr media
David Ian Hewlett.
Holy fuck, dude.
HOW are you not buried under a shitload of Emmys? How is there not a whole wing of your house dedicated to housing the tons of awards you should have gotten for this? (I know he did get quite a few, but I'm talking custom built shelves in at least four rooms. Minimum.)
Everyone brought their A game acting wise, but this guy knocked it out of the park. It was heartbreaking, moving, extremely believable, and just jaw-dropping. David is, in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best actor of the franchise, and I don't say that lightly. I have a massive crush on Joe Flanigan and he's great, same with Amanda Tapping, but David is just fantastic.
So yeah. There you have it. My very concise, totally normal opinion of this episode. I doubt anyone reads all of this, but hey, this is my tumblr and I do what I want.
If you did indeed sit through all of this, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Feel free to tag or reply or add stuff.

anyone else annoyed with portrayals that make Nm and the Bad Sanses and Error out to be “actually innocent uwu guys who aren’t actually in the wrong bc they’re traumatized” and make Ink and Dream out to be “actually the real bad guys actually cuz umm Ink soulless and Dream no care abt his brother actually”?
Like people probably think it’s subversive or something when tbh it’s really not, at least not anymore. Maybe at one point it wasn’t a very popular interpretation of those guys (to have them be The Real Victims Actually) but, it sure is popular nowadays.
Like I’m not against sympathetic portrayals of the bad guys or anything (I’m literally a For The Forgotten Ones enjoyer)
but like, idk it gets on my nerves a bit when people try to make them Not The Bad Ones Actually They Did No Wrong Ever™️. Especially when it’s at the expense of the Star Sanses (Ink, Dream, and sometimes even Blue)’s characters.
It just feels like villainizing the Stars (especially Ink and Dream) for no reason other than to gesture at a “”subversive and interesting”” story, making these interpretations out to be more complex than they actually are.

I just wanna say I really disliked how heated everyone got last night because even though everyone's feelings are valid, things started to get vitriolic and I never ever condone harassing the cast and crew
And I'm so happy today everyone seems to have taken a deep breath and decided to spread love and positivity instead
I kiss you all, it's all love now

(everything is because of time. time made his life move forward every day. just as he would be a compass. a compass that helps guide time and move forward together steadily. it's not just wela that is waiting to meet him. khemthid is also waiting to meet wela.)
not doing a full novel break down lol the series actually did a pretty great job in adapting it. overall a decent $13 spent on meb.
warning: khemwela centered 😌🩷
⭐ khemthid ⭐
- name meaning: compass ; direction
- 4th year business management; wants to do a master's abroad
- when his parents divorced he choose to live with freya
- he is RICH rich (his dad's family is elite) but isn't arrogant about it
- popular with juniors and seniors but always rejects them
- has been friends with japan since their first year of uni but japan has never been to khem's house (since japan is a freya simp)
- loves sweets and hates bitter things ; has a soft voice (to all the shogun haters, 🖕🏻)
- doesn't want to be involved with deep night, wanting to move abroad to escape it. he isn't proud of the club but he loves his mom and doesn't want others looking down on her (he also admires the hosts' hard work)
- his auntie soinang is the older sister of his dad and she hates freya and the club and wants khem to move back to their house but he always refuses
- soinang says that the money made by the club (and freya) is "dirty" and khem snaps back with "that dirty money raised me well." 😌
- has an incredibly vivid imagination 🫠
- can't be fake with people and often questions why anyone would be a host
- employees can't drive to or from work so freya hires a van to pickup/drop-off khem which japan thinks is hilarious bc it makes him seem like a kindergartener, he even calls him nong khemthid
- japan also calls him a "love crazed bastard"
- basically becomes an unpaid part-time employee at nong wela's kitchen
- freya initially wanted khem to be "normal" and marry a woman
⭐ wela ⭐
- name meaning: time (in the drama he's also called กาลเวลา kanwela with can likely coming from 'eternity')
- 4th year business management; #1 in his class
- his parents named him wela (time) because he came into their life at the right time
- his dad passed away when he was in elementary school and left the family millions of baht in debt
- became a host to make money so his mom could have a more comfortable life
- the other hosts/employees dote on him
- he is the "rise and grind" type, doesn't let his time pass in vain and also doesn't like to waste the time others; he doesn't give false hopes and doesn't like to go out/hang around wasting time
- has never once broken the golden rules in the years he's been a host at deep night
- his golden rules are actually: what happens in the club stays in the club -- he doesn't sleep or go home with customers. (plus his "whatever i do, i must get paid")
- carries a keychain with an hourglass on it (matching his name)
- charming points: eyes, smile, gentleness (exceptional casting choice with first 😌)
- he is weak/allergic to vodka
- he is a good cook, learning from his mom as she runs 'nong wela's kitchen' 🩷
🩷✨ khemwela ✨🩷
- khem is slightly older than wela
- have been in basically the same classes since their first year of uni
- khem at first sees wela as an unfriendly nerd with thick glasses (เด็ก เนิร์ด my beloved)
- khem only started messing with wela bc japan low-key idolized him and was interested in being friends with him. this made khem jealous and he started taking more notice of wela, teasing him often
"khemtid didn't know why he was acting like this when he normally didn't. [...] maybe it was because japan liked to talk about wela often, admiring him and wanting to be friends with him. khem realized he was jealous."
- khem and wela bump into each other during a meeting with their teacher and seeing wela up close, khem notices how good looking wela is (glasses rizz 😌) and finds his heart being stirred
"khemthid realized that falling in love was extremely easy."
- different from the series, when khem is surprised to see wela at the club, wela is also surprised to see khem
- before the two get close, khem wants nothing more than for wela to notice him
"his heart, which had already fallen in love, hoped wela would greet him back."
- there's a moment where wela rubs pain relief cream on khem's shoulders when they are on a work break
- the night wela gets super drunk, he vomits on khem lol the shower scene is a series only addition, in the novel they just kissed. after, khem says he wants their first kiss to be better (since wela was drunk)
- the morning after, freya yells to khem that she forgot a necklace and that's how wela founds out they are mother and son
- they are a yucky disgusting pda couple :(
- khem confesses to wela while wela is teaching him some basic strap work
"why does the person i love have to like playing with these things?"
"who? you mean khun freya?"
"her too, but i mean you."
(wela kisses khem first)
- the khemwela date night was actually incredibly romantic. khem took wela out and about in bangkok. charoen krung area for famous oysters and nam tao thong (an herbal drink). they have bua loi and then go see the giant swing, wat saket, and saphan put (night market). while there, khem takes wela to the pak khlong talat (flower market) and wela picks out a bouquet of flowers for his mom. they get ice cream before khem takes them to unfinished property owned by freya. there's no fire hazard candle scene lol they just go up to the top floor of the building and look out at the city view
- wela is deeply touched as he's never had time to go out-- whether to the mall or a different province. apart from work, he only has time for studying and helping his mom in the restaurant
- khem wants to be someone who can lighten wela's burdens
- their first time similar to the series. it was wela's idea to blindfold khem (with his shirt) but his hands weren't tied. /also i rather liked the versatile ambiguity of the scene in the series but if anyone wants to know, wela "bottomed from the top" wink wonk
- the rooftop scene was also a series only (in the novel it was in wela's room but... more unhinged dhshsh)
- they have a lot of really good communication moments
"i want to graduate quickly. mom will get some rest and i'll take care of her myself."
"i believe you can do it. as for you, i'll take care of you myself, okay?"
"i'll take care of you too."
he loves the relationship between himself and his khemthid more every day, he is glad that he was willing to open his heart to this fellow faculty member. khemthid is a warm and caring man who cares for the people around him. even though there are times he does things without thinking, he accepts criticism and is willing to apologize.
- khem took wela to his grandmother's house (freya's old home). the pool scene didn't happen lol it was out in the open
⭐ japan / seiji / ken ⭐
japan
- from a middle class family
- has a younger sibling studying architecture at uni (1st year)
- he sees wela as an angel
- innocent type, never dated before
- he's the only one that calls seiji p'saen
"secretly he was glad p'ken stayed away, but if his p'saen was going to be this depressed, he'd allow p'ken to come back."
seiji
- saen ; seiji is his stage name
- wants to be #1 so bad he thought khem was gonna be a host and take his #2 position away (so he thought about just quitting lol)
- when japan confessed to him, it really stirred his heart as he'd closed himself off from love as no one treated him nicely or with sincerity
- being with japan relaxes him, he doesn't have to worry about things and he finds he can smile more and be real
- calls himself 'phi' with japan
ken
- he's a magician 😀 (no he really performs magic tricks for customers)
- he's good at word play
- ken's outting of khemwela is worse. seiji repeatedly and specifically tells him not to do it but he does it anyway and then he bullies wela a lot afterwards 🔪 causing seiji to be immensely disappointed in him
(tbh i wasn't going to add anything about their three person situationship bc that anon i got but y'all can have this snippet as a treat 🩷)
"true love is making the person we love one hundred percent happy, right?" japan turned to look at seiji's face. "p'saen," he pursed his lips, stopping to think a little, and then asked the other person, "do you really love p'ken?"
seiji felt his face numb. he didn't dare answer japan's question. he just stood there, afraid that if he spoke the truth it would make someone sad. because he has chosen to be with his nong. if he admitted that he loved anyone else it would not be a good thing.
"then for p'saen's happiness. i think…"
"japan."
seiji frowned and stared at his boyfriend's face with his heart sinking. he was so afraid that the words he didn't want to hear would come out of his mouth. he reached out and grabbed japan's hand and held it in his, eyes begging the other person not to say it. because if that were the case, he probably wouldn't be able to stand it either.
seiji truly loved japan. was japan dating him out of pity or was he just being nice?
please japan, please.
ken himself was not at all comfortable with japan's idea. he was so afraid that japan would give up to get out of his way. if that's the case, this matter will never end. was ken confident that seiji would never date him even if they felt the same way? not at all. no way.
⭐ great / james ⭐
- just as underdeveloped as they are in the series 👍🏻
⭐ freya / meiji ⭐
- the series fleshed them out immensely
- staff/hosts call freya: khun freya, khun frey, p'frey, p'ya
- freya has been dealing with soi's bullshit since before khem was born (but it got worse after) as she looked down on freya for being a dancer
- freya worked hard for ten years before divorcing her husband

I think saying that Valentino is being woobified is not…the correct word. Vox, and the way a lot of the fandom downplays his villainy into something more palatable for them by making him a victim and then overemphasizing that victimhood while downplaying his antagonism, is being woobified. On the other hand what’s happening to Valentino is not that.
Both the show (and large parts of the fandom as a result) aren’t downplaying Valentino’s villainy and status as a rapist to make people feel sorry for him so that they’re more comfortable with liking his character. The way Valentino is presented as by the narrative is as this complete fucking moron with anger issues who has zero tact or impulse control; the audience is supposed to point and laugh at Val any time he is not directly (and I do mean ‘directly’) interacting with Angel Dust, which in turn lessens his negative impact without technically just straight up erasing it or pretending it doesn’t exist, and makes him more comfortable to handle and for people to like (or even to dismiss and to hate in some cases).
That phenomenon is not him being turned into a woobie though, that’s him being infantilized; it’s infantilization. No amount of adding layers and nuance to a character (especially if those layers are properly tackled) is going to lessen the impact of a villains’ negative influence on a narrative like making the audience laugh at them more often than they grow apprehensive of them will, and that’s exactly what the show did.
IE: Depict the idea that Valentino is a joke and (outside of his interactions with Angel) he’s practically harmless.
How I see it the show is simultaneously asking the audience ‘how bad could he really be, he’s such an idiot?’ and then showing us exactly how bad Valentino could be and expecting us to just go back to laughing at him right afterwards now that the threat is not immediately in our faces anymore. EDIT: There’s also an implication - that parts of the fandom run with and the writers could maybe be actively showcasing - that Valentino is an undercover mastermind who’s actually smart, but the show itself doesn’t give enough hints at his “childishness” being an act he puts on for me to regard it as more than fans expanding upon the specs of Valentino’s character that they’ve been given to marry the two facets of his identity together and as more headcanon than canon.
With balance this doesn’t have to be an inherently bad thing, but I don’t feel that the show has that balance. Trying to soften the blow a depiction of a fictional rapist will likely have on an audience is not a horrible idea, but something about the way HH goes about it just doesn’t work for me and I cannot for the life of me directly articulate why. I feel the show just often misses the mark when it comes to deciding what about Val and the shit he does should be emphasized for comedic affect, what should be shown to the audience with relative neutrality, and when they should seriously emphasize him being a villain and a abuser/rapist.
From how I see it, Valentino needed more neutral scenes than he did comedic; for further understanding of my thought process his tantrum in “Radio Killed The Video Star” (s1ep2) is comedic (except for when he riles Vox up before the show goes right back to playing up Val’s anger for laughs), his inclusion and actions during the Vees’ meeting scene in s1ep2 is neutral (there’s subtle comedic elements to what he’s saying/doing but the audience isn’t meant to actively be laughing out loud or anything), and the scenes where he’s directly attacking angel (his meaner texts/voice messages to Angel, the dressing room scene in “Masquerade”, his appearances in “Poison”[♪], & when Val threatens then slaps Angel in “Welcom To Heaven”) are meant to showcase his menace without buffers. Less overtly comedic scenes would’ve just balanced him better I think, so there’s not this weird dichotomy of moments where Vox treats Valentino not like a non-threat but like a child having to be weighed against moments where Angel Dust is regarding Valentino like the Overlord is his personal boogieman who’s actually a threat to be taken seriously.
In general though, while some people do play up Valentino’s stupidity and incompetence in a bid to actively neutralize, undermine, or ignore his more violent tendencies for their own purposes (EDIT: sometimes for comedic value, sometimes to make him more palatable or more fun to play around with), the infantilization and further “dumbing down” of his character in fandom seems to mostly stem from an almost incessant need to make him as undesirable as possible even for a villain. It’s a phenomenon that I don’t really have a full explanation for, but for me it reads as a way to “diss” Valentino and the theoretical rapist that exists in many people’s heads that he represents. This isn’t a disavowing of that or anything either, it’s just something I’ve noticed that I don’t really have a name for but still find interesting.
I do think Valentino’s “dumbing down” in fandom has its drawbacks — making a character with such a medium level of influence like Valentino so stupid and impulsive he doesn’t even hide his crimes retroactively makes all the other characters around him seem uncharacteristically weaker for falling for him when he’s not even trying to hide how bad he is or how abusive he’d be, incompetent for not defeating him when he gets in their way even though some of these characters are both more powerful than him & not being manipulated by him, and uncaring since the characters he’s victimizing have someone who claims to care about them (or who’d at least have a vetted interest in the victim’s safety) that knows how bad Valentino is but just chooses not to do anything regardless as a result — but I’m pretty sure I understand where the desire comes from in general even if I personally don’t love it, so whatever.
Brought to you by me misconstruing the term “uwuify” with “woobify” so…..yeah. This post technically spawned from nothing but I did not want to put it to waste so here y’all go. This is kind of ordered wonky too, but fuck it.

I'm sure Kanaan is a perfectly nice young man. But.
I much prefer the route a lot of fanfic authors take: we're in another galaxy in a society, which, although human, has different morals and traditions than our own. Why not take the opportunity and construct a background story of how with all the cullings, Athosians don't have a problem with non-nuclear families. Or one night stands, for that matter.
Teyla finds out she's pregnant, decides to keep it and to not pluck the father out of his village or ask him to split his time between there and Atlantis. She lets him know and he's free to visit. But it's much more important that her kid grows up in a tight-knit group of friends/family unit who love and support each other and spend their everyday lives with each other.
A lot of this stems from the early 2000s dudebro atmosphere of the writer's room, I'm sure. They lacked the imagination and the network probably would have objected too. But that's what fanfic is for. We shove past the writers, grab our blorbos, and go, "Thank you, we'll take it from here".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm dying we keep retconning Kanaan and Teyla's feelings for him and I guess he would have had to have been there since the beginning with the other Athosians but it's just funnier as the writers keep adding details. They should have a done an episode a la Lost where he's there in every critical scene, fiddling with a toilet in the next room

Season 4, Episode 16: Trio
Tumblr media
He said, while eating a lollipop, sitting with his back to a motherfucking Stargate. In a sentient alien city. That he FLEW. From one planet to another. Through HYPERSPACE. In another GALAXY. But sure, the negotiations are the thing that are not in the job description.
Anyway—

I just love those three together. As I already said, Jennifer is actually a very relatable character. And in this episode, you already see how she's starting to change—she's getting braver, and her snarky side is coming out a bit more. Also her and Sam's interactions are great. Female friendships are criminally underdeveloped in SGA and I need more! And Sam's face right before Rodney falls through the ceiling is totally Amanda trying not to burst out laughing.
This was a bit of an escape-room type situation and the set was a great design, especially as it was tilting at the end. That's insanely difficult and exhausting to act and move in. I know that the fandom has its issues with the "ohohoh, the girls might take off their shirts" jokes, but I'm willing to cut Show some slack because I remember TV from that time and let's just say, things were different. Stuff that would be unacceptable now didn't even register als problematic then. (It's still shitty and unnecessary, but I won't hold them to 2023 standards. Moving on.)
The two women setting Rodney straight about his disaster of a non-proposal to Katie was great. I live for these little personal moments.
Tumblr media
While I am diehard McShep trash, I also am a multishipper for the simple reason that I don't like conflict, not even with myself. I will probably get things thrown at me for saying this, but watching Jennifer and Rodney sloooooowly develop mutual crushes—one, as is tradition, a bit more oblivious than the other—was kinda cute. While Katie was sweet and kind, she was too sweet. McKay needs someone to call him out on his bullshit, and when Sheppard isn't around, someone has to pick up the slack, right?
Anyway, that "I won the bet with the bar trick and now you owe me a beer which means you totally have to go out with me" was smooth as hell and good for you, Jen.
Tumblr media
[Side note - how does money work on Atlantis? Do they have a commissary-like thing apart from the mess hall where you can buy extra stuff? Is there a thriving underground economy which deals in chocolate and the good coffee? Whenever someone goes to Earth, do they get handed a 27 page shopping list from places like Sephora and Target? Which currency are they using? I remember Chuck collecting betting money in like 8 different denominations in one episode...]

oh ye children of lands that probably know more about this than i do
i humbly ask your opinion
so ive talked before abt how bad my knees are, right?
so i finally went to the doctor, he was really nice, said something something something its a problem with my plica, which are little folds in the lining of my knee left over from growing as a kid. and theres no treatment except for a really invasive and potentially useless surgery.
but!
that doesnt stop me from being in near-constant pain!!!!!
and i have a velcro knee "brace" thing, but mostly what it does is make my knee sweaty and sometimes hurt more. and also both of my knees hurt, and i only got one brace.
all this to say, i'm going antiquing with my brother this weekend, and i know for a fact that a few of the antique stores we're plannin on goin to have one of those like buckets of just. antique canes.
do you see where i am going.
i have this thing in my head. that tells me that a cane might help. but then it tells me that it would make me look like im faking it to get a cool cane. (which the looking cool thing would only be a bonus tbh)
so i humbly ask of ye, oh cane users and really bad leg pain havers, what do i do? do i ignore my pain, potentially to the detriment of my knee lining, or do i get a cane and look like i'm faking?

Oh something I forgot to mention when talking ab the newest Mad Max movie
Theres a scene where Furiosa is walking on the road and she has a visible limp from [minor spoiler] and I remember going "that's me!" Bc she walks exactly like I do!! I have a slight limp because one leg is longer than the other (and despite going to so many doctors and like 3 chiropractors through the years NONE OF THEM NOTICED and a physical therapist noticed that when I was getting an evaluation like ???)
Anyway I call my walk a "waddle", mostly bc it's mentally funnier, but also my neighbor who was a homebody who watched out her window all the time, and she would tell me AND my mom that I need to pick up my leg more when I walk and stop waddling sgdgdggdgd like thanks for that
Anyway anyway it was a neat little bit of representation like that's me!! I walk like that!!
Idk I thought it was cool
