Hii, I love your work. I have a request. You wrote Yandere HxH And reader who run away beacuse they gave her a chance to test how obedient she is. My request is like reader not run away beacuse she has Stockholm syndrom. (English Is my second language and I am suck at it) Please please please. This Is my first request And I dont know how to write it. (っ˘̩╭╮˘̩)っ
So byeeeeeee
I didn’t know what characters to do so I did chrollo, Feitan, shalnark, phinks, uvogin sorry if that’s not what you wanted!!
Your English is amazing, my first language is English and I still mess up a LOT can’t imagine if it wasn’t
Warnings: past abuse, yandere, kidnapped reader, shal is a bit creepy ngl, mainly rewards

Chrollo
He’s thrilled, his cute little pet finally thinks of him as something other then a captor not just that he’s not your captor but now he’s your lover
You instantly get more privileges and freedom, his trust is a hard thing to get though so you better keep trying do lots of “favours” for him when he’s stressed or in the morning
He lets you move more in bed no fear of you getting up and running away so you can actually breath without his arm going around you
He’s gonna hit you a lot less when you mess up or talk back, he won’t stop completely but now that he knows it’s not from a place of hatred he doesn’t feel the need to discipline as much
Feitan
He doesn’t believe you when you say you came back because you like him, he thinks you were scared about him finding you
He locks you up for a while and then takes you out to ask if your mind changed, if you still like him or would you rather leave now
He won’t except that you like him for an answer, saying you do just gets your more beatings and less food and sleep
He puts you through so much that you’ll probably stop loving him and all that fear you had when he first took you comes back, he’s fine with it though
shalnark
Shalnark didn’t think you’d come back at all so he’s happy that you came back but he’s mad you left in the first place
He’s a but cooler about his punishment because you did come back so he’ll just spank you a couple times and maybe ask for a “favour”
If he’s in a bad mood it will be worse like a couple days with no food locked up but not something so bad that he scares you away
After the punishment you get more privileges, like going on social media, not with your own account but his of course and watching more tv
phinks
He’s to happy to think about anything other then you came back, he gave you the chance to leave him for good and you didn’t, not that he wouldn’t find you if you did try and leave for good though
Phinks behaviour gets worse rather then improve, he gets more controlling and lets his crazy show more because he knows you want leave now so he’s all good
You do get some privileges but mostly he gets more protective
uvogin
He bumps into you as your turning around to go back and is surprised when you run up and just hug him
Hes not stupid he knows why you turned back but he’ll act like he doesn’t just to play around with you and see you beg
When he’s done that you don’t really get a punishment or privileges just some books maybe new bed sheets or your favourite candy to show he appreciates you coming back

================================================
There is something wrong with Valeria Garza. Something deep inside of her that went unchecked during adolescence and festered into something rotten. While the other children played manhunt in the woods behind the school, Valeria was pulling apart the carcasses of stray animals. Feeding that part of her that desired to know what went on in the inside of a body. A vulture in her own right. She was born without something her peers had, and that set up the perfect breeding ground for resentment. She didn't quite yet understand what it was that made her so different. Or why it, in the eyes of the other children, meant she was undeserving of companionship.
Rarely did Valeria crave the attention or approval of another. Even with her missing pieces Valeria knew she was simply better than the others. It aggravated her to no end that nobody else seemed to understand that. There are, however, four people that Valeria... fixated on. Marie Sanchez lived only five houses down from her. Little Valeria would follow her around the playground. Making vain attempt after vain attempt to gain her affection and friendship. That flame slowly fizzled out once they reached high school and Valeria's idolization of Marie turned into contempt.
Her puppy love for Marie grew into a rabid, out of control dog that needed to be put down. And put it down she did. If Marie wouldn't be happy with Valeria, then she didn't deserve to be happy at all. Valeria would take any chance she could get to terrorize Marie. Cruel words and rumours whispered from pink painted lips spread around the small school. Valeria's torment didn't end with verbal abuse. She was having a particularly foul week and Marie's existence only agitated her more. Valeria dragged her into the girl's bathroom and whaled on her. Shattering her cheekbone and breaking her nose. She only spent four months in juvie before being released on good behavior.
There are no certain qualities that draw her to a person. She's not sure what it was about you that reeled her in. Perhaps it was the fact that the first time she ever saw you, you were sobbing. The sound being the most beautiful melody to have graced her ears. Her curiosity was sparked, and she kept tabs on you from then on. Checking up on you for her own entertainment. Her passive interest swiftly evolved into an obsessive need. The thought of you affected her so badly that it made her unwell. She got her hands on every bit of information that she could. Past and present social media accounts. Who your friends were, and who you dated. She saved pictures of you and took some of her own. She absorbed whatever she could into her very bloodstream to be a part of your life.
Pictures and information were never enough. She needed to cut you open and carve room for herself behind your ribs. Remove your lungs so she could take every breath for you. Valeria is a busy woman, unfortunately. Leading a drug empire takes up most of her time and as much as she'd like to, she couldn't spend every hour watching you. There are always workarounds to every problem though, and she's nothing if not a problem solver. When she wasn't able to, she'd send someone in her inner circle to tail you. Take note of everything you do. Where you shopped, where you went. What you ate. Who you spoke to.
In her clean, tidy kitchen she carefully slices through a bright red tomato. Off to the side waiting on a plastic plate is a piece of whole grain bread. Fresh lettuce and bits of turkey arranged carefully on top. She grabs the tomato slices and adds them to the mix then places another piece of bread to complete the sandwich. She cleans up. Putting away the rest of the ingredients for later, washing the cutting board, and wiping down the marble counters. She grabs the plate and makes her way through her home. The floor to ceiling windows shows off the scenic view of the mountains in the distance. The sun is setting behind them, giving the tops a halo-like glow and casting golden beams into her home.
The dark wood floors are polished and clean. Swept and vacuumed every day. She continues down the hall towards the stairs leading to the basement. Admiring the few paintings decorating the ivory coloured walls. Some portraying lush, almost fantastical fields of grass and heather and others with more religious tones. She stops at the basement door and fishes through her pocket for the new key. She had recently installed locks on the door. She unlocks it and switches on the light before descending down. She had the space renovated and took some inspiration from Diego's dwelling. Jutting stones make up the walls with sconces to provide a warm yellow glow. Open doorways branch off into other rooms not yet furnished.
She calmly walks down to the end of the hall and stops in front of a different door. She reaches up to feel along the top of the doorframe. Her fingers lightly brush against a small silver key and she grabs it, pulling it down. She unlocks the door and opens it, just barely catching sight of you crouching in the corner like a scared animal, your chain lightly rustling from the sudden movement. The room is mostly bare. A mattress and a toilet are all she has allowed. For her, and of course your safety as well. The chain connecting to a metal collar around your throat is long enough for you to be able to come close to the door and light switch but not further. She made sure the other end was securely bolted to the wall.
She steps inside and gives you a soft smile, even if your continued fearful behavior is starting to grate against her nerves. You don't return her smile, but Valeria knows you will someday. You'll understand that she's doing this because she loves you. She walks up to your bed - a thick double mattress - and sets the plate down. She turns her head to look at you once more. Just the sight of you is enough to make her feel agitated. Like she has to hurt someone to compensate for the feelings that are too big for her body. Your brows are furrowed, and your lips are downturned into a distressed little frown. Despite the fact that she's the reason for your unhappy expression she finds the sight cute.
When Valeria was thirteen, she spent some time around a man who ran an unlicensed animal shelter. He'd collect stray dogs and cats, and sometimes take pets from yards and demand a fee for their return. If their owners couldn't or wouldn't cough up the money, he'd simply... put them down. He taught her a few useful things regarding animals. They'll be scared of you at first. You just have to be patient with dealing with them. Feed them often, meet their basic needs, and they'll begin to warm up to you. Valeria believes this method can be used on people. You don't even look that different to the starving cats that used to hiss at her from the man's metal cages.
She settles down on the bed, the mattress dipping under her weight.
"Today was a long day," She begins. She feels a rush of satisfaction at being able to talk to you. "There was some trouble by the border, I won't bore you with the details, but a little gang was making itself a thorn in my side." She runs a hand through her hair. The bodies of the leader and his enforcers are lying at the bottom of a lake by now. Providing nutrients for an aquatic ecosystem. "I took care of it, of course." She says proudly. She wishes you'd share her pride. That even if you don't understand the intricacies of running a cartel, you'd sidle up to her with stars in your eyes and awe on your face. You should be telling her what a good job she's doing. Instead, you crouch there silently, uninterested and unimpressed.
She wants to stay. To talk to you more but she knows she should probably leave before she gets too overwhelmed. She just adores you so much. So much so that you have infected her. Not even in her dreams can she escape you. A part of her hates you for it. Her mood is more volatile than usual since she met you, and she loses her appetite if she thinks about you too for too long. The only solution is to obtain and keep you.
"Valeria." You say softly. Almost so softly that your voice is lost the stone walls of your enclosure. Valeria hears you though. Valeria will always hear you. Her heart leaps when you say her name.
"Mhm?" She replies. Looking at you intensely. Pupils blown wide.
"Can... can you please take the collar off?" You ask tentatively. Your voice lowered to an unoffensive volume. Valeria narrows her eyes at you. She's obsessive and certainly 'not all there' by a doctor's standards, but she isn't stupid.
"No." She answers bluntly. You're speaking to her instead of screaming at her which is progress as far as she's concerned.
However, she knows you are nowhere near ready to be freed from the cellar, let alone your collar. Even when you are ready, she'll be sorry to see it go. She takes a perverse reassurance at the sight of you in it. It reminds her that she has you. You seem to mull over your words before speaking.
"It's just the collar... is rubbing against my skin and it's starting to chafe," You murmur. Valeria leans closer to hear you better. Her answer will remain the same, but she will let you finish speaking. "Taking it off for a little bit wouldn't be so bad." Your eyes are wide and glossy.
"I'm not taking the collar off." Valeria says firmly. You look like you're about to continue to try and convince her but something on Valeria's face must dissuade you.
Just like that, your wounded-puppy expression vanishes. Replaced with the dark, brooding look she's more familiar with. Valeria pushes up off the bed and stares down you with half-lidded eyes. She loves you so much.
"Make sure to eat that." She tells you. Gesturing at the sandwich. "If you throw it at the wall again you won't eat for the next week." She turns and leaves the room. Locking the door behind her. You are her most valuable possession and she's keeping you safe, sound, and accessible.

"The Internet can be a risky place. There are endless feeds filled with posts that contain graphic sexual and violent content, glamorize eating disorders, encourage self-harm or promote discriminatory and offensive diatribes. People often share too much personal information with a too-public audience that includes cyberbullies and strangers with ill intent. And they also risk losing time: by spending hours online, they might miss out on experiences and growth opportunities that can be found elsewhere. These problems are particularly acute for children and teenagers, and new laws that attempt to protect youth from the Internet’s negative effects have their own serious downsides. Scientific American spoke with experts about the best evidence-backed ways to actually keep kids safe online.
...
But these controversial policies aren’t the only way to promote online safety. Other legislative actions that are less focused on censorship, along with clear content guidelines and better social media design, could help. Plus, digital safety researchers and psychologists agree that getting families, schools and young people themselves involved would make a big difference in keeping kids safe.
Digital privacy legislation is one alternate policy path that might shift the online landscape for the better. “If people’s data is treated with respect in ways that are transparent and accountable, actually, it turns out a whole set of safety risks get mitigated,” says social psychologist Sonia Livingstone, who researches children and online media at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
A comprehensive data privacy bill could require social media companies to disclose when user data are being collected and sold—and to obtain consent first. This would help users make better choices for themselves, Livingstone says. Limiting the data that tech platforms amass and profit from could also help block the proliferation of algorithms that emphasize increasingly extreme content in order to hold social media users’ attention. Additionally, privacy legislation could ideally enable users to request the removal of content or data they no longer want onlinepotentially protecting kids (and everyone else) from their own short-term choices, Alvord says.
Beyond privacy, national guidelines for social media sites could help. Livingstone and Alvord suggest that a content rating system like those used for movies, TV shows and video games might help young people avoid inappropriate content—and allow families to set firmer boundaries. Design features that let users block others and limit the audience for specific posts allow kids and teens to take the reins of their own safety—which is critical, says Pamela Wisniewski, a Vanderbilt University computer scientist, who studies human-computer interaction and adolescent online safety.
Parental controls can be appropriate for younger kids, but teens need the chance to exercise autonomy online, Wisniewski says. Such freedom lets them engage in some of the Internet’s positive aspects: civic engagement opportunities, community and educational resources, identity exploration and connections beyond one’s own social bubble. To ensure these benefits are accessible to all, youth should be directly involved formulating regulations and safety strategies, Wisniewski adds. As part of her research, she holds workshops with teens to involve them in co-designing online safety interventions. Though this program, called Teenovate, is in the early stages, some ideas have already emerged from it. Among them: social platforms could provide “nudges” that would ask users to think twice before sharing personal data and prompt would-be bad actors to reconsider personal requests or bullying behavior."

AITA for almost making someone die?
ok ik thats a lot, so ill try to start at the beginning. i (17nb) have been working with this one environmental organization since it was started when i was 12. ive devoted a lot of time to it n to seeing it grow, n when the group got big enough that we could rly expand to more places than just my country i was actually assigned to be in charge of running things here. i dont do it alone or anything bc i do have help from our real leader (40s m) n the people who run the branches in the 2 other countries we operate in, especially the one whos also been here since the beginning (30s nb), but its still a rly big responsibility n its important for me to b able to focus n not let other things distract me from my job.
a few months back, i thought it mite b nice to make my own account on the social media site where our group has the most presence so i could post abt personal things. i didnt mention my connections though (the stuff we do is kinda a bit illegal). it went rly well, n i ended up talking to this one person (20s f) who was rly nice, n we became friends p quick. the big problem was that she didnt like my group at all bc she was rly mad abt some of the stuff we'd done in her country, so there was kinda a conflict there. but some stuff happened, she ended up finding out who i rly was, n surprisingly she wasnt rly that mad at me? n she promised to keep it a secret, n it kinda went well from there other than it being kinda uncomfortable that she liked me n not what i do.
i mean, it did for a while. eventually though it became rly clear that talking to her was distracting me from my work, so my boss n coworker asked me to cut her off. n it hurt kinda a lot, but i did it. n thats where the story shouldve ended.
then i kinda fucked up. i was feeling rly weird bc of of smth that had just happened, n my boss n coworker weren't able 2 pick up the phone. my other coworker (??? i dont even kno this persons pronouns) isnt rly good w emotional stuff, but that was the last person i had to contact for support. n that person wasnt there either.
n i kno it was a mistake. i kno i shouldnt have done it. but i was kinda desperate for someone to talk to, n i ended up calling the friend id cut off even though i knew i wasnt supposed to. n she answered, n we talked. n i tried to go back to normal after that, but she started texting me again, n eventually i broke n answered her.
fast forward to today, n i just found out that my coworker had to try to kill my friend bc i couldnt control myself w her. the person who told me says it wasnt my fault, but if id just been able to resist the temptation to contact her again there wouldnt have been any messages for them to see in the first place. n on top of that, i kno that caring abt ppl too much makes them die, n i still let myself make that connection w her in the first place.
i mean, i think its p clear im the asshole here. basically the whole posts just been stuff i did wrong. but i kinda want to get confirmation, just so i dont have to keep thinking abt the thing the person who gave me the news said.

Do you want technocratic fascism? Because that's how you get technocratic fascism.
Also, it's factually incorrect. There are a number of circumstances in which private companies are required to abide by first amendment protections. The first case, and probably the most famous one, is when a private company acts as the primary means of exercising free speech. This was established in Marsh vs Alabama when a company town, a town that is established to support some industry efforts and is entirely owned by the company, tried to prevent a woman from exercising her free speech by claiming she was tresspassing. The supreme court came to the decision that if a private entity owns the primary outlet of free speech that they are subject to relevant free speech laws.
This arises from the old-timey idea of town squares. Back in the day, long before the internet was a thing, if you wanted to share an idea you went to where the people were: you went to the town square. Town squares became the marketplace of ideas and culture. The term town square become synonymous with the place where ideas were exchanged. Since then it has fallen out of the laymans lexicon, but it is still very much used in legalese. With this understanding, the supreme court concluded that if a private company owns the town square, they must protect the speech of it's occupants. With regards to modern times, the idea of town squares is so antiquated that when someone refers to a town square it's thought of in terms of fantasy stories. We don't have town squares: we have social media. Social media has become the preeminent destination for the exchange of ideas and culture.
"the more an owner, for his advantage, opens up his property for use by the public in general, the more do his rights become circumscribed by the statutory and constitutional rights of those who use it. Whether a corporation or a municipality owns or possesses the town, the public in either case has an identical interest in the functioning of the community in such manner that the channels of communication remain free" -Justice Hugo L. Black
The second scenario in which private companies are required to abide by first amendment protections is when the private company is operating as an agent of the state. Essentially, if a private company is regulating speech on behalf of the state, they are required to uphold first amendment protections. This is to prevent the state from using private entities as a vehicle to infringe on others free speech through means of coercion. This one is less cut and dry however. The current understanding is that if a government agent threatens some kind of retaliation or repercussion for NOT censoring speech as requested then it violates free speech laws. Where this becomes murky is that simply stating that you represent some government body is enough to constitute a threat. This was determined in Okwedy v. Molinari
In his letter, Molinari invoked his official authority as "Borough President of Staten Island" and pointed out that he was aware that "P.N.E. Media owns a number of billboards on Staten Island and derives substantial economic benefits from them." He then "call[ed] on" PNE to contact Daniel L. Master, whom he identified as his "legal counsel and Chair of my Anti-Bias Task Force." Based on this letter, PNE could reasonably have believed that Molinari intended to use his official power to retaliate against it if it did not respond positively to his entreaties. Even though Molinari lacked direct regulatory control over billboards, PNE could reasonably have feared that Molinari would use whatever authority he does have, as Borough President, to interfere with the "substantial economic benefits" PNE derived from its billboards in Staten Island.
It's since come out that various government agencies, including the CDC, Census Bureau, Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI all have direct access to request posts to be taken down and accounts removed on both Facebook and Twitter. We can safely assume that both Facebook and Twitter could reasonably fear retaliation if they do not abide by the requests of the literal DHS & FBI.
We also have a term for when the government asserts it's authority to coerce private companies into censoring speech. It's called fascism. Y'all are unironically supporting fascism to dunk on I don't even know who. Mean twitter people I guess?

Hello hello, I am Mia and I have totally lost control over this blog! 🥳🥳
But because I read somewhere, that to help others (the blog) you must first help yourself (me), I have decided to finally get it together and start to organize some stuff!
So here we go, I guess...
💫About Me💫
There's actually not very much to be said about me specifically.
I'm Mia (on the internet at least ;D) and I have this Tumblr account, thx byee :))
jk, here are some Tumblr-relevant facts about me:
🙆♀️ I'm a cis woman, going by she/her pronouns
💬 I speak English, German, French and a bit of Spanish (I don't tag posts language-specific, though)
⌛ I started my fandom journey on Wattpad and am now very happy to have deboarded that particular train for Tumblr xD
🫣 I've also been here for a while, but spent most of my time lurking
💻 I actually don't have any other social media, because I'm very susceptible to doom-scrolling (but I want memes, so I'm very thankful for Tumblr and my saviour the chronological dash lmao)
🩷 I love that there's a community here for any obsession I find myself falling into, so I tend to just cram all of the fandoms in here without thinking twice (but my organization-effort does include trying to compile a list of my most consistent ones :D)
❤️ my offline hobbies include but are not limited to: reading, writing, singing, music, photography, knitting, Magic: The Gathering, nature (whatever that means)
📚 I am an indiscriminate enjoyer of all things written down, whether it be traditionally published books, comics or fanfiction
✏️ I wrote some fanfic in my teenage years, switched to poetry for a while, before coming back to long-form fandom writing
⁉️ Although I am an advocate for Don't like it, don't read it!, I recognize that sometimes it's not that easy. I myself have clear boundaries of what I am and am not comfortable seeing. Therefore I will disclaim that I participate in RPF for fandoms I post about here, but because this is my multifandom dumping site, I'm keeping the rpf-side of things confined to sideblogs with the appropriate notice.
💌 I am always delighted to meet new people and make new friends, so if you want to chat, please don't hesitate to send me a DM or an ask!! <3333
💫About this blog💫
As previously stated, this is my multifandom dumping site. But it is also my meme dumping site. Anything that is not related to a fandom is not specifically tagged (mostly).
In regards to fandom posts, I usually tag the fandom itself and, if relevant, specific ships. I don't normally tag characters, because that would get out of hand pretty quickly. ^^"
My top five most-consistent fandoms at the moment are:
🏎️ Formula 1 (sporadic live-blogging)
🌟 Captain America
🕵️ The Man from Uncle
🔎 Midsomer Murders
🌜 The Sandman (Netflix)
For more/all of them see the fandom list, I definitely had time to compile yet.
My own two cents are organized like this:
✨ #mia screams into the void for original posts
✨ #mia rambles to the void for my comments on other people's posts
✨ #artsy for all things art
✨ #kitties!!! for all things cats
✨ #oh don't go breaking my heart for all the heart-break
✨ #wtf did i just witness for all the mind-break
✨ #oh…oh no for all things 'this is very funny but also wtf people'
✨ I am working on the happy stuff, but atm it's mostly #lmao and all of its variations
✨ #queue what queue no you queue for...the queue
I am really trying to get some organization into this, so I might come up with some more things to differentiate between stuff. I hope this makes sense to anyone else aside from me as well lol.
In any case, if you have read this far, I am really impressed! Thank you for giving me the time of day, I am so glad you exist! (also pls come and chat with me if you want) 🥰🥰
#feel free to ignore this i am trying desperately to get some kind of orga into this mess#mia screams into the void

Character solidifying! | Accepting
22. Who are their friends? Lovers?
Narrowing scope to 616.
Back in 'the day,' their friends were:
Frenchie: Marc's friend from the merc days. He flew MK's helicopter and lived at Grant Mansion with Marlene --
Marlene: the system's girlfriend who lived with them also at Grant Mansion. She was Steven's girlfriend at first and grew to love Marc and Jake as well. She was as vital to the MK operation as Frenchie, helping plans succeed and holding her own in fights.
Gena: Jake's bestie who ran the local diner. She and Crawley gave Jake plenty of tips for MK business. Her sons, Ricky and Ray, were also lookouts for MK. Ricky was KIA in the military. Ray took over flying the helicopter for Frenchie sometimes.
Crawley: our resident homeless man who pretty much took the cash Jake gave him and used it to buy tea bags.
Outside of occasional change ups (Gena moves to Houston for a while, Marlene and the system break up a ... few times. okay at least 8 times), the cast was the cast between real world 1975-2011. Because Marc's refusal to change, they all dipped in and out of the system's life and eventually moved on altogether. I'll spare you the revolving door.
Our current Midnight Mission Gang is:
Reese: Recent vampire who lives in the same neighborhood as the Mission. The assistant. Knower of tech and social media.
Soldier: Also recently turned vampire. Lives with his mom near the Mission as well. Former HYDRA goon.
Hunter's Moon/Dr. Badr: The other Fist of Khonshu. Traditional and devout where Marc is not. Can channel former Fists' memories and abilities.
Tigra/Greer Nelson: Marc's former/current (in comics and in some verses here) lover. They were on the West Coast Avengers together. She's a weretiger and has a son.
8-Ball/Jeff Hagees: super villain goof. formerly a defense contractor and missile propulsion engineer with a gambling addiction that ruined puts the former in 'formerly.'
22. ‘Type’ or ‘ideal’ partner?
Nice hair. Can kick Marc's ass. Can hold them accountable for their actions. A bunch of patience. A partner doesn't have to be romantically involved with all three of them but they can't shove the other two aside to be with the one. They like hands and competency. Doesn't have to be in fighting, though that really does help since their life is...like this. Accepting that they will not stop being MK.
13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates?
School was an exercise in endurance. They got through it. Marc didn't have any friends and was always in fights. Steven liked school well enough but he and Jake struggled with keeping a friend group. Teachers could be sympathetic while others weren't.
They could have gone to a Jewish day school but they were in the public school system with Jewish education on the side. Antisemetism came from Marc's peers as well. Amongst their Jewish peers, Marc was seen as a troublemaker despite being the rabbi's eldest.
29. What is your character’s weaknesses? Hubris? Pride? Controlling?
They can be angry and dense; they're also workaholics if Jake decides the work is more important than breaks.
Spector: An interesting mix of pride and self-loathing (egotistical?). Which leads to him being controlling.
Grant: Tfw Executives Defunctioning. His anxiety gets the best of him with Spector being a goddamn mess and he has to be responsible for this as well, which leads him to being an annoying yuppie fuck in other avenues of his life. At times he defaults to 'smile and wave' passivity.
Lockley: Can be too easy-going and casual. Not in a passive way. Deliberately carefree.
Spector and Lockley's weaknesses feel more apparent. Grant got stuck with a lot of thought spirals in volume 1 and I interpret some of the moments at Grant Mansion to be Grant and Spector being blurred.

Heading into their second season as the stars of HGTV's Down Home Fab, Teen Mom alum Chelsea Houska DeBoer and husband Cole DeBoer are feeling pretty, well, you know.
When they made their debut last year, "We wanted people to take us seriously and prove ourselves," Chelsea explained in an exclusive interview with E! News. But now that they're back (season two premieres March 21 at 9 p.m.), "We're like, 'No, we do know what we're doing. And we're going to come into it confident.'"
But lest they worry they're getting too high on themselves, they have daughter Aubree, 14, at home ready and willing to help.
"She is definitely very opinionated," Chelsea said of Aubree, who she shares with high school ex Adam Lind. "It's so funny, because whatever my style is, she's like, there needs to be records on the wall, posters plastered all over. It's very teenage."
And the high schooler has already given her take on the couple's newest creation, their Down Home by DeBoers decor store that boasts wares with the same edgy chic aesthetic they use to makeover clients' homes. (Plus a section for their own Aubree Says line.)
Recently they all dropped into the South Dakota shop, "And it was the first time she's really seen it completed," explained Chelsea. "I was like, 'What do you think Aubree?' And she said, 'If I ever took over the family business, I'd turn it into a Zumiez.'"
Safe to say seeing her prized storefront transformed into a version of the skate shop chain is not something Chelsea is going to roll with.
Joked the MTV alum, "I was like, 'Okay, well, then you're never taking over the family business.'"
Chelsea can absolutely envision her eldest striking out on her own, though. "Aubree is very creative," she acknowledged. "I could see her doing anything creative, whether it's design or art or anything."
As for the rest of her crew, they may also be down to carry on the DeBoer legacy.
Son Watson, 7, "is so smart and loves to build things," said Chelsea. "So I could see him being definitely a builder." And daughter Layne, 5, affectionately dubbed "Layniac" by the fam, "is so high strung, I could just see her on our demolition crew," joked Cole, "because she's ready to rock and roll."
As for the baby of the family, 3-year-old Walker, "She is so funny," said Chelsea. "She just tags along with the older kids. And she keeps up, too."
In some ways Chelsea and Cole are just along for the ride as well.
Though raising four kids while tending to several thriving businesses is a bit of a study in controlled chaos, "Our kids are very involved, and they get to see our projects," noted Chelsea. "And that's something cool that we get to share, like, look what Mom and Dad are doing, and doing together."
Echoed Cole, "Being able to show our kids and our family what we've created has been awesome."
So, yes, some days they absolutely lose a battle of wills with a teenager ("When they reach 14, you kind of give up," joked Cole) and others they come to terms with the fact that not allowing Aubree to have a public Instagram account means they are so not Gucci. "I'm just very protective of her having social media and what gets put out there," explained Cole, "and also just the people that follow her."
But, mostly, they spend their days feeling grateful AF.
"I think it's important to be happy with where you are and see where you can grow in that space," explained Chelsea. "I love HGTV. I would love to do, like, 20 seasons. And I'm so proud of our store that we're opening. And I think really focusing on this right now is our goal."
Well, that, and taking the time to appreciate everything they've quite literally built.
"We're creating so many awesome projects and working with so many amazing people," acknowledged Cole. "But being able to do that with Chelsea has made it even better."
As for his bride of seven years, she tries not to spend too much time reflecting on just how far she's come from her single teen mom days.
"If I think about it too much I cry," Chelsea shared. "But it is really cool. And it's really cool that whole journey was documented, too. I feel like a lot of times in your life, you go through things, but you don't really remember it, you kind of just block it off. But to be able to see the entire journey, you are almost able to be more grateful for it."
Her existence now is such a dream come true, "literally once a day I'm like, 'I'm just so thankful for this life,'" said Chelsea. "And that Cole and I get to do this together, I'm always just so thankful."

Okay so Paulina and Danny are dance partners and Paulina is half dragon, which is basically a given with me, and they're both kinda punk I guess? Danny being punk just makes sense because GIW+Vlad+Walker. Paulina has essentially become part of Danny's found family as much as Sam and Tucker at this point. None of them trust the government/anyone working with the government/any authority figures.
Paulina, while outside of Amity, gets Klarion to stop attacking the YJ team (from the cartoon) by saying the team is with her (Danny saved Teekl recently and Klarion doesn't wanna do anything to upset Danny, so attacking people who are with someone he's close to is something he doesn't wanna do). The team has never met Paulina before this, but she just saved their asses from Klarion and got him to turn against the Light, so they play along. The team soon finds out that Paulina doesn't have control of her powers (remember she's half dragon) and soon enough she actually joins the team.
It quickly becomes apparent that Paulina doesn't trust superheroes. They ask her why she joined them.
Paulina knows Danny's not safe at home. She knows he's not even safe in Amity Park. She knows there's a very high chance of him being vivisected at any time, especially if his parents find out what he is. She knows Ellie is out there on her own somewhere and she's in danger if she's even in America. She knows the situation that's already impossibly bad could get a hundred times worse at any moment. Some of the people she's closest with are very big targets for the government sanctioned genocide happening in her town. She won't be able to do anything to help if she's alone. She needs allies unless she wants to be left completely powerless to protect her Horde. The Justice League works with the government and can't be trusted. But the Team? She's not sure. They've disagreed with and fought the League before, and they don't work directly with the government as far as she can tell. She might be able to go to them for help and get the to keep it from the league if she has to. She wants to find out how much she can trust them first though. And for now they're at least helping her figure out her powers.
I'm still not sure about how to word Paulina's response to the team's question, so I'm gonna skip that for now.
Kaldur makes a social media post about how the closest thing he has to a celebrity crush is someone on the internet with a very small following with the username of AstroHaunt. (It's Danny.) Paulina sees this and asked Kaldur if that's his real social media account. It is. Paulina knows Aqualad was Danny's celebrity crush when he was 13, but she's not sure how he feels about him now.
Sam and Tucker show Danny Kaldur's post and he tells Paulina that if it's real, she can give Aqualad his number, since Danny knows she knows him.
Danny would describe his type as people who are strong minded, in control, and could kick his ass. Paulina would describe Danny's type as toxic assholes who are interested in him for the wrong reasons if at all and who will only hurt him.
She doesn't know if Kaldur will be good for Danny or if she should trust him less now. She gives Kaldur Danny's number, but decides to keep an extra close eye on him now.
(I might reblog this with more later or make a separate post. There's definitely a lot more to say about it. Anyone know a good name for this AU?)
Anyone wanna hear about the DPxDC AU that's been spinning in my head for the last couple days? (It has a lot to do with the version of Paulina that exists in my head, which is very different from canon and from how most people seem to think of her. It also has to do with the Young Justice cartoon and Cold Current.)

Genshin Fic Recs
so... i ventured into the vast world of Google looking for some good GI fic recs... only to find such a pitiful amount that i was promptly devastated. therefore, the solution is to make my own! :D
keep in mind most of these will be ChiLi or XingYun, and yes, i will try not to include smut unless it was one i really really liked. if anyone wants a separate list for just smut (though that will most likely be shorter) i can try to make one later.`
ft. my bookmark comments :)
CHILI
wrapped up in pure gold by beyondwinter
(chili; accidental marriage; chili/childe-centric; 22k words; ongoing)
"Do you understand its meaning, Childe?" He finally asks. There's a hard glint in his eyes, like he's trying to steel himself for his answer.
"Yeah." Loyalty and devotion, right? Between business partners? "I do. It's traditional, isn't it?"
Zhongli's eyes glow a warm amber in the near darkness, reflecting the soft shine of the lanterns. He studies his face with a strange intensity, as though Childe were a piece of high quality Nocticulous Jade being sold for suspiciously small sum and he's trying to find the blemishes that would explain the price. The weight of his gaze should be uncomfortable, boring into him like he can see into the very depths of his abyss-tainted soul, but Childe finds himself preening under the attention instead.
Childe accidentally proposes to Zhongli. Zhongli accepts.
The World is Water by Millereflets
(chili; smut; hurt/comfort; chili-centric; 7k words; oneshot)
Childe doesn't visit Zhongli until it's almost too late.
(my bookmarks: HOW DO YOU MAKE A SMUT SCENE SO POETIC HOLY SHITTTTT)
Set in Stone by seredemia
(chili; fake dating au; angst; some smut?; chili/chiilde-centric; 55k words; ongoing)
What do you do when you write about a certain six thousand year old consultant so much in your letters that it somehow convinces your entire family you're not only dating each other, but that you're also engaged?
In Childe's case, the answer is plain and simple: he goes along with it, of course. Absolutely nothing can go wrong if he makes a contract with the God of Contracts, vowing that the two of them will pretend to be lovers for the duration of his family's stay in Liyue. Afterwards, they'll return as normal and speak no more of this mess. No feelings or complications involved whatsoever.
Contract accepted. A fool-proof plan set in stone. Right?
Private Ledger of the Eleventh Harbinger by JuHuaTai
(chili; humor; getting together; chili/ekaterina-centric; 5k words; oneshot)
“So guess what I did next?”
Ekaterina contemplated not answering, but Harbinger Tartaglia was just… grinning and waiting. It’s honestly rather creepy the longer time passed.
In the end, she gave a long suffering sigh that seems lost on him, “You bought him the Erhu—“
“I bought him the antique, cor lapis based Erhu,”
-
When she first left her homeland for the unknown nation of Liyue, Ekaterina was ready to be many things: To be a soldier, to fell Tsaritsa’s enemies in her name, to bring glory to Snezhnaya and her leader.
Being a receptionist in a cozy bank wasn’t so bad in comparison, but she absolutely can do without the front row seat to Harbinger Tartaglia’s (expensive) love life.
i know i'm where i'm meant to go by paperclips (pastel_paperclips)
(chili; humor; fluff; chili-centric; 12k words; ongoing)
"Childe," Zhongli says suddenly. "I am enjoying myself greatly." Childe’s face breaks into a grin. "Then-" Zhongli gasps, grabbing his wrist and tugging him over to an unsuspecting peddler with a cart full of rocks. "Is that an intrusive igneous pegmatite formed in the Inazuma regions?" Childe’s grin smooths into a small, adoring smile. He has all the time in the world to figure the other man out.
OR: Finding the Geo Archon is on Childe's to-do list but hanging out with Zhongli is significantly more fun.
CHILIVEN
Crumbling Stone by avtorSola
(chiliven; ANGST; PAIN; mind control; zhongli-centric; 74k words; ongoing)
When Morax unleashes his plan to test the Liyue Qixing and his adepti, he does not take into account the stirring of the Abyss Order in the north and the corruption of Dvalin - for why would he fear an organization that works in such shadows? He is secure in his power, after all, unlike his flighty ex, the absentee archon of Mondstadt who rises only when his people are in danger.
But, somehow, the Abyss Order discovers his plan. Somehow, they capitalize on it. And he, the God of Stone who cannot sicken, is struck down - taken by an order bent on destroying all of humanity as Liyue crumbles around him. For even Archons aren't immune to Durin's blood, and Morax is no exception. But then the question becomes - if even Archons may fall to the agony of this corrupting burn - how is their traveling friend Aether immune?
The answer comes from beyond the stars - an ancient malice that knows no kindness or mercy. A malice whose legacy the Abyss Order now bears, seeking to topple all the Archons and their people into the void of utter destruction. And they have begun in Liyue.
Fortunately, it takes a long time to erode stone.

PLATONIC ZHONGVEN
left-behind city by trixstar
(platonic zhongven; angst; ANGST; venti-centric; 1k words; oneshot)
"An associate of mine has just informed me that Rex Lapis, the Geo Archon has been assassinated."
Venti blinks.
Or: Venti and how he copes with finding out he is all that remains.
i circle ten thousand years long; and i still do not know if i am a falcon, a storm, or an unfinished song by birdsofpassage
(platonic zhongven; angst; hurt/comfort; zhongven-centric; 4k words; oneshot)
Venti and Zhongli, and the vignettes of a much-needed vacation around Mondstadt.

XINGYUN
the art of exorcism by Agried
(xingyun; ghost au; hurt/comfort; chongyun-centric; 9k words; oneshot)
On the road back from one of his jobs, Chongyun runs into Xingqiu, the wandering swordsman. And then they keep meeting, over and over again. or, alternately; how a ghost and an exorcist learn how to love, one step at a time.
Bane of All Evil by tzitzimeme
(xingyun; humor; romance; chongyun-centric; 24k words; hiatus)
When Chongyun unintentionally offends Liyue's second most powerful adepti, he vows to mend the thorny relationship between Adeptus Xiao and human exorcists-- even though no one has succeeded in currying Xiao's favor for over a thousand years.
His best friend Xingqiu offers to come alone, mainly because he's worried about what kind of trouble Chongyun will run into. Along the way, they receive help from others: Xiangling packs them meals for their journeys, while Zhongli gives them advice on what demons to track.
Childe is just there because he thinks the whole thing is hilarious.
[On indefinite hiatus due to burnout; sorry!]
kiss me slowly (so i don't forget) by xiwangmu
(xingyun; humor; romance; light angst; xingqiu-centric; 8k words; oneshot)
Wangshu Inn Bulletin Board
Guest Message: My best friend whom I harbor affections for kissed me last night, but due to his special condition he does not recall a single moment of it. I am quite conflicted about whether to disclose these events to him or not, because that would most certainly require me to confess my feelings as well. If anyone has experience in romancing boys with excessive positive energy, this one humbly asks you to share some advice.
Reply: Our greatest apologies—although we would like to offer some words in response, we simply cannot decipher your handwriting. Perhaps you may return with a neater message next time?
time trials by idlestars
(xingyun/many ships; humor; modern au; xingyun-centric; 2k words; oneshot)
A modern social media AU.
Xingqiu Teases Demons. Chongyun Almost Cries. [The clip shows Xingqiu, lit by the sickly green of night vision, as he stares bored into a dark room. He’s alone - Chongyun left to see if Xingqiu could lure out the ghosts. Xingqiu glances at the camera, smirks, and then opens his mouth.
“Hey demons, it’s me, yah boy.”]
OTHER/GEN
woe be the wallet of the god of wealth by glassdrachma
(gen; humor; identity reveal; keqing/zhongli-centric; 12k words; finished)
Or, the story of how the Yuheng of the Qixing came to idolize, befriend, and discover the identity of the God of Geo, in that order.
(personal comments: hilarious, made me burst out into laughter multiple times, and was just a masterful piece of writing)
to dream of dust by miao_x
(guili/gen; ANGST; hurt/no comfort; zhongli-centric; 5k words; oneshot)
Some nights, Zhongli dreams.
He dreams of soft light, golden song, and a gentle breeze whispering tales of millennia past. It is warm, familiar, and comforting.
It feels like home.
And then he opens his eyes, and awakes to reality.
(my bookmarks: oh zhongli... made me cry)
To drown in your own tears by C_rin_nyan
(guili/gen; ANGST; TEARS; PAIN; zhongli-centric; 2k words; oneshot)
As Rex Lapis, he had never shed a tear, even as he slaughtered hundreds, destruction following his every step. As Zhongli, he had shed much more than he would like to admit, however.
Or, “Zhongli’s soul gave its last scream long ago, yet even now, the echo of said sound was still strong enough to reach Rex Lapis.”

Right after you put away your groceries, you take a quick shower and head to bed. Truly, there was nothing better than a refreshing shower after a long day - especially when you know you’re not going to be able to enjoy times like these anymore once you start working. Just then, you recall having to set your alarm early tomorrow because it was your first day, plus the other two wanted to meet up for breakfast before heading to work.
As you lie on your bed, scrolling through your barely active social media accounts, you hear a soft thud coming from Ayoung’s apartment. Huh, she must be moving stuff - seems strange though that she’s doing it with a potential tenant present. You don’t pay much attention to it though until it happens again and suddenly a faint moan reaches your ears. Your eyes widen, thoughts of all sorts running through your head. You must be mistaken. You should be mistaken.
You hear it again, and it gets repetitive until there’s a steady rhythm that has you certain about something that could be happening there. You’re really not one to meddle with people’s private businesses, especially ones of this particular kind. You push each incoming thought away, regardless if it is an innocent one or not. It proves otherwise though, with the sound coming in clear for a wall separating the two apartments.
At the same time, you also wish the best for Ayoung and if this man is a moving-away gift in disguise as this one, well you’re incredibly happy for her. Who were you to take that happiness away from her? But as the man’s grunts become more audible and prominent, your immediate reaction to it is beyond you, and you’re almost involuntarily rubbing your thighs together at the sound.
‘No’, you think to yourself, stopping your southward train of thoughts and its imminent course of action. Rubbing at your temple, you wonder how could you even allow such pompous thoughts cross your mind.
Groaning, you lie on your stomach and mush your face against your pillow as if to block those indecent images threatening to corrupt your mind. It isn’t right to get off someone else’s steamy evening, more particularly, that of your friend’s, so you close your eyes and focus on trying to get some sleep.
You can’t.
Not when this man’s heavy breathing sounds just as hot as Ayoung finds him to be.
Not when this man sounds just like a porn star.
And especially not when this man’s vocals are so stimulating to the point that it feels like an invitation for you to join the fun. Or at least, take an imaginary part in it.
Holy shit.
Tapping your fingers furiously on the bed covers, you ask yourself if you have really reached this level of desperation? That your lack of human touch is causing you to question the very principle of civility?
You shake your head as you reach for your earphones. Coincidentally, Spotify’s shuffle decides to land on a Jamie Foxx track.
What is with the universe constantly trying to fuck you up?
You tap on the next button quickly, turning the volume all the way up in the hopes of ridding yourself of unclean thoughts, that is, until you hear Satan himself let out a particularly loud grunt, one you can practically feel travel straight to your core. Jesus.
The voice of your evil miniature self on your left shoulder whispers in your ear, “It isn’t often for you to get ahold of an opportunity like this. Go get some,” she says, holding your angelic self on a chokehold with her own halo.
She had a point though, and you really could only imagine having more time for yourself starting tomorrow. Besides, it’s been a while since you truly ‘relaxed’. And to top all of that, with the apartment walls as thin as paper, you can literally feel your neighbor’s bed now moving in a steady rhythm. You’re even surprised you’ve managed to keep your self-control this long. Not long enough though, unfortunately.
Now that you’ve come to think of it, this man must be on a different level entirely if Ayoung could let herself get...dicked down during a simple visit (and for the first time too!). Just imagining what he probably looks like is sending a light tingle down your spine.
You sigh, ultimately giving into the temptation. There’s no turning back now.
Slowly, you slide your shorts down your legs, giving yourself time to still contemplate...but, hesitation was never really your strong point (a trait of yours that had truly blossomed since your friendship with Chohee). So off go your underwear too.
As quietly as possible, you scoot over to the wall, just enough to let your shoulder touch your old, boring, beige wallpaper. You feel your neighbor’s bed move with a little more intensity this time, and you trail your fingers downward to your cunt, which is surely wet by now with all your thinking.
The man’s grunts are louder than Ayoung’s thankfully, leaving everything to your imagination. You start at a steady pace, wanting to test the waters. With the couple just a mere distance away from you, save the wall separating your apartments, you try to match your pace with the pair.
Letting your digit circle your clit, you work yourself out to your orgasm - that is, until your climax won’t arrive and you figure just using your fingers won’t get the job done. Just as if you thought the sounds they were making weren’t enough to get you over the edge. It’s been a while since you had any ‘action’ and your rust ass won’t allow you to cum with just your fingers.
Hurriedly, you draw out a small box from beneath your bed. In haste, you throw the cover across the small room, fishing for what used to be a very good friend of yours before: Lovecorner’s limited edition of Real Feel 7. Never too late to catch up with good ol’ friends.
You turn on the device, hoping that there’s enough battery left to get you through the night. Closing your eyes, you circle the dildo around your nether lips, gathering all the slick there. A few more moments and you gradually insert the toy inside you, causing you to shiver in excitement. Gulping, you only push it halfway through at first, wanting to get used to the feeling again..
There’s a short pause from the other side of the wall, one you use to your advantage to keep up. When you feel them continue, you pick up your pace, both desperation and shame pumping you up so you could get this night over with as quickly as possible.
Just as you had expected, you feel their breathing get heavier by the second, and your bed is practically shaking with...what you presume to be yours and their movements combined.
For some reason beyond your understanding, you work yourself out on your trusty companion, taking in every whimper and grunt from the other side of the wall like it’s your own, like you’re the one fucking like there is no tomorrow.
You’re getting closer to your high - a feeling almost foreign to you at this point, and with the last string of sheer will, you push the toy further up to the hilt, stroking your g-spot so perfectly that your orgasm has got you quivering in bed for more than thirty seconds.
Breathless as ever, you lie in bed, staring straight into the ceiling.
What. Was. That. All. About.
You press your thighs together, an unexpected reaction from the reality of tonight’s events suddenly dawning in on you. You did not just get yourself off from your neighbor's live porn.
With no more movement coming from Ayoung’s apartment, you could only assume that their day has officially concluded as well. Sighing, you make your way to your bathroom, treading over your floor as lightly as you could with your sore legs.
Ten minutes and a refreshing half bath later, you head back to bed, exhaustion causing you to fall asleep in seconds.
The sound of your jarring iPhone alarm blares right in your ear, scaring the living hell out of you exactly 6:45 in the morning. You wake up in a fright, panting heavily as you scramble to turn off the horrible sound.
Quickly, you get off of your bed, proceeding with your daily morning routine. You tick off breakfast at home today, having scheduled your morning meal with Jimin and Soomin as your first official day as employees of Woocheon Medical City.
Making sure you’ve got everything in your duffel bag - extra clothes, toiletries, and the rest of your essentials, you lock the door to your apartment, sealing it off with a slight jiggle to the knob to assure yourself.
Ayoung’s door likewise creaks open, and you glance at it through your peripheral vision to see a man coming out. Your eyes widen - he stayed the night then. Hm. You’re unsure if you want to suspect him of something other than a one night stand, or it’s just this curious itch inside you that makes you want to check who’s responsible for last night’s...occurrences.
Mustering all that courageous chi Chohee has hopefully transferred onto you, you linger a little bit by your doorway before facing the man. Thankfully, the stranger doesn’t make your job difficult for you and looks your way as well.
No.
This can’t be.
Turns out, Mr. Stranger who was supposed to be your hot neighbor as Ayoung claims is no stranger at all.
It had to be.
You look away just as quickly as you looked at him. “________? Hey! I didn’t know you lived next door!” Your lips form a thin line. Why does he make it sound like you’re already neighbors?
“Jungkook,” you nod to answer his question. “Good morning to you too.”
Your cheeks heat up with the range of emotions you’re feeling: anger - from him not even remembering Ayoung’s name; shame - for your actions last night; disappointment - there’s a possibility of you two becoming neighbors and you’d inevitably have to face him more often than not.
“Where are you off to? Gym?”
Why does he think you’re going to gym in a collared shirt, jeans, and flats? And more importantly, why are you two even having this conversation?
The elevator doors open and your impromptu escape plan springs into action, and currently, just like your legs. “Work actually! And I’m going to be late, so bye for now!” You sprint towards the elevator, quickly pressing a button to close the doors.
You let out a sigh of relief as the doors close, leaving Jungkook with a confused look on his face.

as dads... 👨🏻🍼
a/n; i’m sorryyy i’ve been in a fluffy mood lately I haven’t posted smut in a while but I promise I will! enjoy this though <3
soobin -
bro, he’s the clueless dad
doesn’t know anything about being a parent. is lazy about preparing to be a dad but he has a few tricks up his sleeve
everything would fluster the hell out of him. when the baby poops, when the baby pees, when they baby pukes, or when the baby cries he’d get surprised about it every single time as if it doesn’t happen
you know those type of dads where everything is literally a learning moment for them? yes, that’s soobin
is a dorky dad
his children will most likely own him, he won’t own his children
type of dad that gets beat up by his toddler kids for absolutely nothing
they walk in and kick him in the shin while he’s cooking
or pull his hair while he’s trying to read to them before bed
feel like his daughter would be the exact replica of him like seriously, would have his his whole entire face and matching dimples
with that being said, is an absolute sucker for his daughter
gives her anything she wants even if she’s a spoiled brat he’s scared to say no
needs his wife to teach him how to put his foot down
i feel like soobin’s son would be wild asf lmao
repeats every inappropriate thing that soobin says
“daddy? what does bullshit mean?”.
will scold his kids if they’re acting too wild but they never listen to him so it doesn’t really matter
again, he needs his wife to help discipline the kids
i know it can be quite common for parents of color (minorities) to hit their children but in my opinion I don’t really think soobin would hit his kids all that much
he would pay a lot of attention to them though and know them like the back of his hand but he can’t really control the shit that goes on in his wild household
his wife will mainly come home every night to a messy kitchen and messy living room with soobin passed out on the couch and the kids curled on top of him snoring
all in all he loves them though, they’re his babies <3
yeonjun --
honestly, yeonjun is a pretty attentive father
i think he would be veryyyyy playful and affectionate
would want to do EVERYTHING with the baby
want to cook, want to clean, want to watch tv, want to talk to him/her and hold them all the time
has separation anxiety when his children are away from him for too long
even if he’s at work he’ll face time his wife often just so he can see the baby
if he takes his kids to the park he’s literally watching their every move
will still hug and kiss them on their cheeks and forehead no matter how old they get
extremely overprotective
no really, don’t touch yeonjun’s babies unless you want to die
protects his daughter from anyone that tries to date her
i think yeonjun’s son would most likely pick up one of his talents and his daughter will pick up the other
his son can sing and his daughter could dance, vice versa
encourages them to follow their dreams
supports anything and EVERYTHING they
definitely documents everything lmao, even if it’s small he’ll record or take a picture
will make a photo album of all of his children’s achievements
is the type of dad that’s always talking about his kids
literally fr--he mentions them in every conversation
he’s just a proud dad alright? don’t judge him
i think yeonjun’s children would be extremely well behaved and well kept
mostly because yeonjun doesn’t play around LMAO
nah fr, he’s a dad that knows how to scold and punish. his kids know better than to cross him
gives his kids anything they want
takes them on vacations allllll the time
universal studios, disney world, legoland, you name it and he already booked the trip
honestly the type of dad that’s always somewhere having fun with his kids and posting photos on social media
is IN LOVE with being a dad
beomgyu --
lmao beomie is the cool dad
literally will talk to his baby like he/she is grown
“i’m tired of this show. you want to watch netflix? big mouth has a new episode”.
“can you stop crying? that’s weird. all you did was pee. you’re acting you’re a baby or something”.
“why don’t you just use words? tell me when you’re hungry. stop acting like you can’t talk”. (his baby is literally 2 months old)
loves sleeping with his babies the most. loves when they cuddle with him in bed and just fall asleep in his arms and on his chest
plays with them all the time, chasing them around the house playing laser tag or ‘the floor is lava’ lmao
loves playing video games with them, doesn’t let them win just because they’re young
will literally beat them in every game with no remorse, he just tells them they have to learn how to beat him
when they’re older he’ll literally let them do whatever they want
“dad can I go to a party?”. “sure whatever”.
“dad I’m going to a club with my friends”. “alright. be safe”.
“dad I think I’m pregnant”. “damn how that happen? I hope your baby’s father isn’t ugly tbh”.
is the type of dad that will lie to his wife about their children’s bad grades to save their asses
always sugar coats the parent teacher conferences to his wife, telling her that they’re the star students (even if they’re bad as hell)
laughs when one of his kids curse
teaches them the cheat codes to getting what they want in life
his kids ADORE him lmfao
is the most understanding and caring dad there is
taehyun --
strict dad who is a good listener lmao
i think taehyun would be more prepared when he knows he’s about to be a parent. of course he knows he doesn’t know everything but this man would be so prepared lmao
literally would do research on different things just to try and get a better understanding of how children’s minds work
his kids would be baby geniuses please
his daughter would be playing mozart on the piano at the age of two
his son would be a mathematician at four
LMAO i feel like his kids would be smart and mean ASF
literally the bougie kids at school with the latest clothes and shoes and don’t want to associate with the dumber kids
spoiled ROTTEN by taehyun will literally call him for the smallest inconvenience
“dad can you put more money on my credit card? I’m feeling sad today”
“dad I need a spa day”.
and yes taehyun will do these things for them at the drop of a dime
i feel like he’s the type of dad that knows everything, literally can’t outsmart him
if one of his children lies he already knows that they’re lying and already has evidence to prove it
I don’t think any of his children would ever lie to him though lmao taehyun don’t play that shit
type of dad that will allow his spoiled ass kids to live in his house for as long as they want without requiring them to move out
absolutely weak for them
will set up bank accounts and college funds for them
literally does EVERYTHING for them i cannot stress this ENOUGH
will buy their first apartment if they want it
will buy them their first cars
taehyun’s kids : part time job? what’s that?
type of dad that his kids can talk about anything and everything with and they love him for it
can be a crackhead dad too, will do the craziest shit to make his kids laugh
his kids are his world <3
kai --
lmfao i feel like kai is the fine line between being prepared and not knowing what the fuck to do every second
literally needs his wife because he’ll get anxiety trying to make big decisions for them
i think he would be at his prime parenting during the toddler stage since he has a lot of energy. he would bring his kids to trampoline parks and bounce house places allllll the time
his kids’ fondest childhood memories would be somewhere in a bounce house jumping and having fun with their dad
would also love turning on a soft playlist and have coloring sessions with them
is the type to make his kids dress like him, oversized sweaters, baggy jeans and cute sneakers
would buy his kids matching outfits and toys
also would be big on accessories i think. would love buying them cute backpacks, lunchboxes, and pens and pencils lmao
i think kai’s children would be chaotic as helllllllllllll
extremely hyperactive and don’t know the concept of bedtime
has frequent food fights in the kitchen
whenever they take a bath they get suds all over the floor
they eat and nap in the kitchen cabinets even though kai specifically told them not to do that
kids would be EXTREMELY cute so it would always be hard for kai to scold them
his version of scolding is literally, “hey don’t do that”. will never yell or hit
can never find a babysitter for when him and his wife have date nights because his children are always on a rampage
and when they do have do have date nights his children always find a way to facetime him fifteen hundred times about nothing
i think out of all kids, kai’s kids would be the baddest ones in school just because of the contrast lmfaoo
his son draws curse words on his desk
his daughter gets into fights all the time
parent teacher conferences are the funniest because kai is smiling no matter how bad the teacher says his kids are
literally cannot control them LMAO
but they’re so funny and sweet to him he can’t help but become weak for them
when they’re older though I feel like they’ll mellow out only a little but still kinda rebellious
kai is a positive dad who tries his absolute best lmao but he loves them with all his heart <3

sinnoh league headcanons
these hc’s are very centric to my favourite characters so i apologize if most of them only revolve around a few characters (volkner, flint, cynthia, maylene, candice, dawn, lucas).
byron and volkner smoke and the rest of the league hate it. cynthia, maylene, and gardenia, being the biggest advocates for health and the environment in the league, constantly admonish them for it and pull the craziest things to try to get them to stop.
flint and volkner once stayed in the hotel grand lake together (the hotel near valor lakefront, renown as a honeymoon location for couples) and the tabloids caught wind of it, sparking an extreme amount of dating rumours. they still haven’t heard the end of it from the rest of the league.
the elite four all get along surprisingly well for the wide range of ages. flint and aaron occasionally butt heads due to their forward and loud personalities clashing, but bertha talks them down and lucian keeps them sane. the four of them together make quite the unconventional, tight-knit group.
candice and volkner act like brother and sister. they bond over their seclusion (geographically) from the other leaders and their love for complex puzzles, as well as their intense best friends (maylene and flint). their personalities mesh really well and they always protect each other from media rumours and general hate.
the last three gym leaders (byron, candice and volkner) tend to spend more time with the elite four than they do the other gym leaders (though they’re still very close with the others).
the gym leaders, elite four and champion are the closest sinnoh have to any real celebrities, and therefore they attract the most media attention. articles such as “volkner being the problematic gym leader for 5 minutes straight” and “10 times maylene turned a public meeting into a motivational speech” definitely exist.
maylene has a popular tiktok account and she always forces the other leaders to make videos with her.
dawn and lucas are like the adopted children of the league. they always make time to visit the leader of the cities they travel to and make occasional appearances at the battleground when the league decides to meet up there.
flint and volkner have especially taken to dawn and lucas and are the ones they visit most often. they jokingly refer to them as their dads — flint and volkner don’t mind.
even after dawn/lucas beat the league, cynthia stays on as the figurehead champion who takes care of the league’s affairs. dawn and lucas are still young and have so much more of the world to learn and explore before they deal with anything that stressful, though they do take the battles of the occasional challengers.
the sinnoh gym challenge isn’t taken on my many people which leaves the league with a lot of down time, and this is why they’re all so close. only they can empathize with each other regarding the leader experience and the league are the only family that some of them have.
though their most popular hangout spot is the battleground, a lot of the time, they also meet up at someone’s gym/the league building. having so many eyes on you can get exhausting, and they use these hangouts at more protected areas to just be themselves with the people they trust.
during the time of team galactic’s terror, the league often held meetings that turned into group therapy sessions. for the first few hours, they would intensively analyze team galactics actions, movements, and possible motives, but once their energy tanked and the sun went down, most of them would end up lying on the table or floor and they would lay out all of their insecurities to each other. they would often talk about how worried they were that cyrus’ plan would succeed if they weren’t strong enough, or if the region could tell how little control they had over the situation.
i don’t have hc ages for all of them, but here are some:
— cynthia: mid/late 20’s (27?)
— volkner & flint: 24
— candice: 21
— maylene: 20
— aaron: 19
— dawn & lucas: 16
(i know that pokemon has the consistent theme of their mc’s being 10-12, but i just never saw that as viable with the level of maturity needed to go through the situations that they do. read: this is my hc list and i do what i want)
most of the leaders are quite young and i figure that’s why i hc that they all get along so well. bertha, byron, and fantina are the only ones left from the previous lineup of leaders.
this is kind of a big one, but i hc that cyrus was the previous champion of sinnoh. he was very power-hungry and put way too much pressure on the gym leaders / elite four to perform at their highest capacity. it was a huge breath of relief for the whole region when cynthia beat him.
the previous generation of gym leaders / elite four all stepped down from their positions around the same time (within a few years of each other). much like the current lineup, they were all very close, and just couldn’t keep up when the new leaders stared to take on their positions. all of the current leaders are very forward-thinking and fast on their feet while the previous generation still carried the burdens of the league under cyrus’ rule, and decided it was time to let them take the lead.
bertha, byron and fantina all have their own reasons for staying.
bertha: she’s nearing retirement anyway and wanted to see the league be something good before she stepped down. all she knew was cyrus’ rule, and she wanted to end her career on a good note with some years under cynthia.
byron: he decided to stay because of roark getting the leadership position in oreburgh. roark always tells his dad that he shouldn’t stay just for him, but byron does still very much enjoy being a leader, so he stayed for that, too.
fantina: she’s still young and has a huge passion for battling. as close as she was with the past leaders, she still has so many years of her career ahead of her and found it easy to fit in with the new leaders. she also figured that someone with past experience that the younger leaders could relate to should stick around in case any of them needed guidance (being in the middle of sinnoh also helps for visitations sake)
even though dawn and lucas are still very young, they’re wise beyond their years. they’re both extremely empathetic and very good at picking up on other peoples emotions, so when the leaders are feeling off or down, they’re always the first ones to be able to notice what’s wrong and give good advice.
all the leaders feel extremely indebted to lucas and dawn, but all they ever ask for is friends in the leaders and a place to stay when they visit every once in a while.
the league always have a yearly vacation together with each other. it’s chaotic, competitive, and always ends up drawing media attention and making headlines for something crazy that happens during the trip, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.
i’ll stop this list here for now, and i’ll compile all the ones i think of from here on out into a part 2! this headcanon list also gave me the idea to make fake social media profiles for the league, so stay tuned for that coming in the future.

Matteo - Episode three
Social Media - There’s so much of it this week! At the time, I only followed a couple of accounts and then only saw the rest when it was posted to the tag. I think I’m grateful for that. This is absolutely overwhelming, the sheer volume of things the characters were putting out. But it’s also really nice that we get all this normal teenage life stuff. It really does allow an immersive ‘this is real people doing real stuff’ feeling to everything. Particularly people like Kiki and Sam who have little to do with the plot. It keeps them real and alive through a season where they were a bit more sidelined (and I love that Matteo and David’s little trip later on keeps them alive in a way that doesn’t overpower Amira’s season - this is a really clever way for the producers to keep fan favourites active without having to shoehorn them into places where they don’t belong). I am also a bit concerned about some of this though - how on earth did the boys not get in trouble for filming the dancing girls and posting it to social media? At most schools I know that would have resulted in some serious discipline action. However, the most fascinating thing about the social media is the party at the end of the episode. Sara didn’t start posting much on her stuff until much later in the evening (the reason this post is so late is because I was waiting to watch through all the social media before I worked with it - and there was so much for so long that I was able to notice the patterns in it in a way I didn’t at the time) and then Leonie took over and it was interesting what she chose to show and how non-perfect it all was compared to what Sara was trying to do before she got really incapacitated. I know it’s not technically part of this episode but the text string between the two of them the next day where Sara panics over how Matteo might take seeing her in such a sloppy drunken state is very telling. She really really wants to put on a show to make sure he’s not turned off by her not being ‘perfect’ - again, this is all very subtly done but there’s a really strong push to show how much of what is put onto social media isn’t a real and true depiction of who we really are. And of course that’s most important for Matteo himself. He’s still very actively putting on a front and it’s only partly to try to cover for the fact that he’s interested in boys not girls. He’s really not happy or at ease with pretty much any aspect of himself, but he’s also not really willing to show it to anyone. Except David. Which we’ll see as we go through the clips.
Clip one - Matteo’s shelf in the fridge is so sad! Someone (a parent maybe?) should really be making sure he has food and is looking after himself. We touched a bit last episode on food and nurturing and what we see here is Matteo very much not nurturing himself. Even more so than Sara, he has no care for his own wellbeing. Also he’s relying heavily on other people (Hans in this case) to do the heavy lifting for him. It’s also a major contrast to the playful, if disgusting, sandwich he made with David. Here it’s really just about putting something in to his body and there’s no thought for anything other than basic survival. Which is, tbh, a good metaphor for Matteo’s approach to his life at this time. The chat with Mia again veers close to things that are difficult for Matteo - he’s wearing David’s beanie, trying to get that bit of closeness to him, but then Mia starts asking awkward questions about why the kitchen was so terrible and what Matteo was up to and it’s all a bit tough. Matteo tries again to deflect and lie to cover his tracks. Which... is he ever going to learn? This lying is forever getting him in hot water when he’s caught out. Jonas even calls him out on it, basically saying ‘if you’re going to use me as an excuse then give me a heads up first’ showing that he has Matteo’s back, but is incapable of helping him if he won’t help himself. At this point, of course, Matteo has closed off because there’s a lot he finds too hard to talk about but Jonas is already giving those hints that he’d be there for Matteo if only Matteo would let him be. But at least Mia’s pushing serves one purpose - Matteo makes contact with David again and they manage to connect and get over the little hitch that David’s ditching caused. Both are still hiding bits of themselves from each other (David more so obviously), but both are quite happy to make these connections and are comfortable with each other. That David responds is so nice; it sets up the dynamic so different to the original and Matteo is much more secure in David’s friendship than Isak was with Even at this point just because of this. Then of course Matteo does the gay test, and it’s clear he already knows but he’s just sort of trying to work through some things. It leads to some of the things he says later that are quite unfortunate (both to the boys about the dance teacher in this episode and to Hans later about the ways to be gay), but I think there’s a genuine desire to figure out what gay might look like rather than any truly homophobic stuff. societal expectations and stereotypes and our own internal biases mess with us big time!!
Clip two - There’s not a lot of difference with the dancing girls clip, but it’s nice to see David again and the interactions between him and Matteo are a lot more natural than with Isak and Even. I guess because these two are in the same year, it’s much easier to pass off knowing each other and so Matteo really is a lot more casual than Isak ever was. The tone of the ‘why does he have to be so gay’ is different here too - Matteo’s much more low key and subdued when he’s called out on ‘why do we insult gays’ and he’s apologising fairly quickly. It really is much more obvious that he’s trying to work out what ‘gay’ is than trying to distance himself from the idea of being gay. He has a lot of issues and a lot of stuff to work through but it’s entrenched in an entirely different way to the og even though the words are almost exactly the same. The power of acting and body language!! Of course, this makes sense for both characters too - Isak and Matteo have different experiences and different lives and so they each act in a way that makes sense for them. I’m super impressed that the same conversation can look so different - both actors are very very good.
Clip three - This scene with Matteo and Sara works much better for me than the one with Isak and Emma. But perhaps that’s because Sara is allowed to be much more of a rounded character rather than a plot device. We can say all we like (and Leonie is so clearly right there with us) that Sara needs to wake up and see how badly Matteo is treating her, but the way this is developing makes it clear why she thinks and acts the way she does and we can have a lot of sympathy for her even while rolling our eyes at how obviously this is not working out. This right here is the moment where Matteo really should have said ‘yeah sorry, this isn’t working for me’ but he chooses not to because he still wants that security of having ‘someone’ if the thing with David turns out the way he expects it to (eg, David and Leonie being a thing). He wants the ability to hide and say ‘see, there was nothing there, I have a girlfriend so I’m not at all upset that David has one too’ and it’s shitty behaviour and it’s totally unfair to Sara, but at this point Matteo can’t see beyond his own needs. Sara is very clearly not happy with the situation and she rightly feels sidelined and unappreciated but she is still willing to accept his word when she puts those words into his mouth. She’s still invested in this fantasy in her head and she is carefully scripting it so that it goes the way she wants it to. Like last week when she was talking over Matteo to avoid hearing anything he’s saying, here she’s literally telling him what to say to get the outcome she wants. Leonie has quite obviously got a better handle on the situation, but Sara doesn’t want to hear it. Sara, again bless her, is very open about what she wants and needs from a relationship and how she’s feeling. She refuses to take Matteo’s very half-hearted attempt at sweet talking her at face value and demands some accountability. But it’s the very nature of those demands that sets her doom. She tells him what she needs and he gives it to her - only it’s a very pale and weak imitation of what she would really like. He uses her communication skills to play her.
Clip four - I loathe how no-one takes Matteo’s wants and needs into account, pretty much ever. He’s in such a rut of being used to just going with the flow that even when he tries to assert his own wants people straight up ignore him. It’s sad that he allows Kiki etc to basically commandeer his home for their party but it’s very much in keeping with how everything else is going. Last week, Kiki was super irritated because she had a picture of how things were going to go (they would have their event and Matteo would host it) and she couldn’t deal with things not being under her control. I suspect that if Sara hadn’t been with them and hadn’t done the speaking for Matteo, he would have been bullied into doing what she wanted then too. He clearly doesn't want to do this , but at least he uses it as a way to get closer to David. ‘Well, this party idea sucks, but maybe I can get this guy I like there’ and so he goes right up to him and invites him. While he’s quite checked out of significant parts of his life, when Matteo really wants something he’s not scared of going after it. Of course, as we see in later events, this gets him in trouble at times. But for right now it’s nice to see him taking some small control of his life. This is only possible, of course, because he was able to connect with David fairly quickly after he left last week. The fact that they are able to do this is testament to how easily they do understand each other and even while its awkward, this relationship doesn’t have the underlying tensions that the one with Sara does. It’s awkward in a positive way.
Clip five - there’s lots going on in this one. The studying and how little interest and engagement Matteo has with it. The consequent stalking of David on Sara’s account, the flow over into looking for David’s favourite movie, and of course Hans and his intrusion into Matteo’s quiet space again and then his attempt at using grindr. It’s a slow, fairly quiet clip and yet Matteo ends up doing a lot in it. It shows again, I think, just how much he values his time by himself and how much it works for him to be allowed to do things at his own pace. I’ve said before I really enjoy seeing the characters in their own environments being chill and just hanging with themselves. It shows us a lot of how they are. In this case, Matteo moves very quickly from the boredom of the studying to things he has more interest in. Like David. He’s restless and disengaged, using all of his tricks to try to distract himself (playing with plants etc) and then very quickly giving up on what he should do. I like that we get these sorts of smaller, lower key indications of how much David means to him as well. It’s not big grandiose expressions of interest, but he watches the movie because David likes it. He can’t even let himself stare at the picture for too long because it feels like a huge admission (he literally breaks eye contact with it and looks away the way he often does with David himself). It’s in these unguarded moments in his own space that we really see Matteo and he’s a mess, but he’s a mess who really does want connection and to find meaning with someone.
Clip six - We all love this one, right? It’s such a nice moment with David and their almost-kissing is very intense. But there’s a lot going on before that that I also want to look at. First, the way the boys call Matteo a ‘player’?????? how???? That’s his girlfriend????? He is playing her and stringing her along when he shouldn’t, but he’s not playing the field which is generally what we mean when we say this sort of thing. He has one girl and that one girl has made it pretty clear that he is hers. In many ways Matteo would be better off if he was playing the field - then there’s no expectations and he gets a rep as a ladies man. But this works better for him - he can sort of fall into it and follow along with it without having to put any effort in at all. She literally speaks for him, even. I have always found it fascinating how much Matteo keeps to himself in this clip. He hugs the walls like they’re his home and Sara is out there in the middle and there’s such a disconnect between the way they’re both acting. How would Matteo have coped with the expectations Sara outlines about sex had she not got so blind drunk she had to be taken home? It seems like it would have led to something very awkward and maybe she’d have finally got the picture.
Laura's little visit to see Matteo is cute too. Obviously she knows that David is interested and so she checks him out. It’s a shame it’s interrupted by Hans who then monopolises Matteo, but she was quite deliberate in finding him and speaking with him and I love the sibling support. David’s shirt he chooses to appeal to Matteo is hilarious too. The thought process (and the discussions with Laura at home beforehand) must have been brilliant. ‘I always wear black and am mysterious and aloof and cool, but to attract this boy I will wear a white shirt with a stupid picture on it’ - that it does attract Matteo just shows how attuned David is to his future boyfriend. Maybe he’s stalking the instagrams too - the Matteo Monday and Florenzi Friday do suggest that this is something that might appeal to Matteo.
Hans and Andi bother me too. In much the same way that I dislike that Sara assumes that Matteo not wanting sex with her means he’s gay (like? It’s okay not to want sex!! It doesn’t say anything about your sexuality), I don’t like that Hans has talked about Matteo to Andi and allows him to be so forward and aggressively sexual with someone who is very obviously not willing to be out. I know Hans is trying to be there for Matteo and to encourage him to accept himself (I think it’s pretty clear that he knows or thinks Matteo likes guys). But this is a party with all of Matteo’s friends. What did they think would happen? Why did they think he’d react in any way other than the one he does? Hans looks confused when Matteo pushes away and leaves, but why? This behaviour is entirely consistent with everything we know of his character. That it ends in an actual panic attack makes it all much more sad and difficult to watch. Honestly, outing people when they’re not ready is not cool and Hans should know this.
The panic attack itself is so well done. There’s no dialogue and yet we can see very obviously how Matteo is feeling and just how ‘normal’ this is to him. He has a set of behaviours that he follows to try to take the edge off. He throws things (this is his go-to when he’s stressed and he does it a LOT), he tries weed and he finally tries music and sitting by himself, cuddling a cushion for comfort. I know a million people have discussed this at length, but I don’t think we can speak about this clip without at least touching on it. Everything about it is done so well and it all combines to allow Matteo’s feelings to shine through. I love that it’s allowed to happen at a party and that we see very clearly how these things can be overwhelming for characters. I won’t go on anymore, but it’s just great and the acting is so perfect. I genuinely think this small part of this clip is probably my favourite acting out of everything in this show.
And then of course we have the stuff after everyone else has left. Again, a million people have discussed this in a million ways, but I love how this scene again shows how easily they get each other, how good they are at communicating with each other and how quickly they get on the same page. Matteo has no trouble at all saying what he thinks and pressing for information. This parallels Sara in some ways - she is like this with Matteo, making her wants and needs clear and putting herself on the line. Again, this is all very good set up for later on when Matteo finally finds himself in her position and realises just how much his behaviour hurt her because he’s living her side. However, unlike Matteo, David is quite clear and honest back. And that’s why they can so quickly move into a potential kiss. As with Matteo and Sara, there are close ups as they lean into each other, but somehow it feels like there’s more space for them to breathe here. The camera allows them both to be in the frame naturally, whether Sara is often invading into Matteo’s shots. Here, they’re both on board and both want it. I like that Matteo gets a moment to be open and himself after his experience with Andi. It must take a lot of courage to do this after he was so badly affected earlier. Testament to David’s calming presence which reassures rather than pushes, and how honest they are with each other - there’s no way David could miss how relieved Matteo is when he finds out that Laura is David’s sister not his girlfriend. They’re both very brave here - David for telling Matteo he looks good and Matteo for trying to take that next step even after his panic attack. And I think that’s a nice place to leave this. Because that’s already such a lot and this has all already been said before.

Danger First
Chapter 4
Hiya @pocketramblr
.
While the other ghosts watched poor Izuku more and more, Yoichi gathered a pile of pillows and beanbags, and a small container of popcorn, then dropped unceremoniously onto the pile, ready to watch a bunch of teens beat the tar out of each other. En noticed this, glanced at him, and did a double-take.
"Since when do you have popcorn? How do you have popcorn? Where did you get it? Have you been holding out on me? Can I have some? I'll fight you!"
"Uh... it isn't real," said Yoichi.
"Neither are we!"
"No, I mean, you can't taste it. Or smell it. It's just a construct. For the aesthetic." Something none of them really bothered with, lately, but Yoichi wanted to put the effort in for Izuku. Even if Izuku probably would never be aware of it.
"But... popcorn..."
"Shhh! It's starting!"
.
The first round was Kouda and Satou vs Yaoyorzu and Kirishima.
If he had to guess, he'd say Yaoyorozu and Kirishima would win. Yaoyorozu's quirk was perfect for setting up quick and simple barriers and traps, and Kirishima's was good for defense as well.
That wasn't to say Kouda and Satou couldn't win as well... Satou had what seemed to be a fairly powerful strength enhancer, perfect for ripping through hastily constructed defenses, and Izuku didn't know if Kirishima would be able to completely counter him.
Izuku also wasn't entirely sure what Kouda's quirk was. His first guess would have been a physical mutation, given his appearance, but thinking back, it didn't seem like he'd used anything like that during the quirk assessment, so those features were most likely vestigial, like Izuku's hair color, which suggested a less physical quirk. It had to be something that could be applied in combat against robots, though. Izuku was the only one who'd passed without villain points.
So, it could go either way.
He could continue to analyze, but his attention was drawn back to the team he'd be facing. Hagakure and Monoma.
A blush rose up in his cheeks. It had to be Hagakure. He still hadn't apologized for running into her during the entrance exam. Hand to hand against her was going to be tough- he could only hope the support department had given her an invisible costume, and she wasn't... well... uncostumed. Again.
But, beyond that, not being able to see her would be a problem. She could get to the fake bomb without him even noticing.
Monoma would be a challenge, too. Given the number of pocket watches on his costume, Izuku suspected he had a time limit for how long he could copy a quirk. But he had no idea how long that could be, and it could be misdirection, too. Izuku certainly wouldn't want to telegraph a weakness like that if he had that kind of quirk.
Another option could be that he could only hold one quirk copy at a time. That'd be trickier for Izuku to deal with. Either way, he doubted Monoma could permanently hold an unlimited number of quirk copies. Monoma's personality was all wrong for that, and he didn't have Iida's engines anymore- unless he could choose to dump quirks? But why would he do that? Izuku's (formerly) quirkless sensibilities rebelled against the very thought.
He was overthinking this. He'd have to assume that Monoma could come at him with any quirk in the class. So. What would be the most inconvenient? All Might's, except Izuku had All Might's, and Monoma wasn't able to use it.
(Oh, and that could be a problem, couldn't it? Could Monoma be able to tell All Might didn't have a quirk anymore?)
Well, judging from what he was seeing right now, Izuku really didn't want him to take Yaoyorozu's quirk. It was sort of terrifying.
Other scary ones would be Todoroki (he'd launched that ball with a glacier) and Tokoyami (a sentient quirk! So cool!) but he thought Monoma would avoid Shouji and Asui (full body mutations). Other than that... Monoma would probably wait and see who did the best, or which quirk would work best with Hagakure's.
He'd have to take Hagakure's quirk into account, too. What if they both came at him invisibly (and naked)? Izuku would die...
Each battle lasted for up to fifteen minutes, not counting the ten minutes the villain team had to set up. That's how long Izuku had to defend the fake bomb. As the defender, Izuku had another handicap. He only had to fail once to fail entirely...
No. Stop that. This was a school exercise, and All Might wasn't going to expell him. Losing would suck, but he'd be together with half the class on that front. The important thing was learning from the experience. And not getting too hurt.
Right. He returned his gaze to the screen as the match started.
.
"We're a sentient quirk, too," said Banjo. "Aren't we cool?"
"He doesn't know we're sentient, though," said Yoichi. "Also, he spent like two months straight gushing about how cool One for All was when we were with Eighth. Didn't you get enough?"
Banjo sulked. "It isn't the same."
"Speaking of Monoma," said En, "why didn't you slap his little grabby hands away from One for All yesterday?"
"Because a late bloomer is one thing, but someone confirmed not to have a quirk suddenly having bone-breaking super strength? Yeah. No. Yagi might have beaten my brother, but that doesn't mean everyone who worked for him is gone. Eight never knew about Garaki at all."
"Way to bring down the mood, En," said Banjo, elbowing the younger ghost.
"The mood was already brought down by the fake popcorn."
.
Izuku wrote furiously in his notebook, trying to record every detail of the match. He pulled one of his gloves off with his teeth to get a better grip on his pencil. He'd need to practice writing with gloves on. He was missing important notes. Speaking of which...
"Can we get copies of these recordings?"
"You should be able to access them through your Ultra Account on the school website!"
Izuku nodded and continued writing. As expected, Kirishima and Satou had gotten into a one on one fight down the hallway from the bomb room. Unexpectedly, however, they had seemed rather hesitant to hit each other. At least, until Satou dumped a packet of white powder (sugar according to All Might) into his mouth and started smacking at Kirishima indiscriminately. Kouda, meanwhile, had sent a small army of mice (animal control! Very cool) at Yaoyorozu, who had responded with mousetraps.
The clock ran out, to the villains' victory.
.
"It was surprisingly hard to hit someone," admitted Kirishima in the debrief.
"We've been socialized to avoid violence," said All Might, nodding. "Overcoming that hesitation is part of our training. As is when not to use force."
.
Next up were Kaminari and Sero vs Aoyama and Jirou.
Kaminari entered the building first, quickly engaging Aoyama, who had been directed towards Kaminari by Jirou. That fight got loud quickly. Sero, meanwhile, scaled the outside of the building with his tape.
Kaminari ultimately defeated himself with his own quirk (that was a pretty severe drawback- maybe Kaminari should consider other fighting styles?), which allowed Jirou to hear Sero climbing up the wall. But Aoyama couldn't get back fast enough to prevent Jirou from being captured by Sero.
.
"I think Kaminari was the MVP," said Izuku. "He did hurt himself, which was bad, but his sacrifice allowed his teammate to safely reach the objective. If he hadn't, um, shorted out...? It would have been better, of course, but..."
Yaoyorozu shook her head. "Sero managed to capture one of the villains and safely reach the bomb. Additionally, he's the one who came up with the plan of attack."
"Ah," said Izuku, "that's- that's true..."
"Regardless, it is a plan that only bore fruit due to teamwork! Excellent work! Jirou, Aoyama, your division of labor was also a good plan, but don't forget the enemies you don't see! Time for our next match!"
.
This time, Asui and Tokoyami were defending against Todoroki and Uraraka.
"Good luck," Izuku said, waving slightly to Uraraka.
"Thanks!" She gave him two thumbs up as she trailed slightly behind Todoroki. "So," she said, as they walked out through the door, "how are we doing-?"
The door closed. Izuku winced. Surely, they had strategized beforehand...
.
"Young Todoroki," said All Might, somewhat sternly, "you... that was certainly an impressive display, but even when dealing with real villains, a hero has to be conscious of the damage they may do. A large number of villains are only minor criminals, or even otherwise ordinary citizens having a bad day."
"That's not what the media says," mumbled Todoroki, though he looked pale as medi-bots carried Asui from the scene.
"The media is full of sensationalists. And even if it weren't, Asui isn't a real villain. There is a difference," he said, very gently, "between going beyond and going too far."
All Might paused. Todoroki hunched his shoulders. There was something familiar about his posture, something that made Izuku's stomach knot.
All Might continued. "It was a good strategy. Against another team, or against real villains, it would have been a more than appropriate strategy. In fact, it was even an appropriate strategy in this case, since you didn't know Asui had trouble with cold temperatures. But when you encountered her in the hall and noticed how poorly she was doing, you should have hit the emergency stop button."
Instead of laying down mode ice when Asui struggled to get free, which was what actually happened.
"Why didn't you stop the match?" He didn't sound accusatory. Just flat and resigned.
All Might made a face and gestured to the screens on the wall. About half of them showed static and the rest blurry shades of white and gray. Like the rest of the building, they had been iced over.
Todoroki sighed. "How much trouble am I in?"
"You aren't," replied All Might. "In trouble, that is. As your teacher, this is entirely my responsibility. I shouldn't have set you against Asui or should have gone over safety concerns more clearly..." All Might paused, his face that of someone who knew they weren't getting their point across but didn't quite know what the problem was. "Injuries are inevitable in heroics and hero training, but you don't want to maim your classmates. Or minor villains, really, if you can help it. So... consider this a learning moment."
"But it was just ice," said Kaminari.
"Cold kills people frequently," said All Might. "People lose fingers and toes to frostbite regularly. Again, for anyone but Asui, this level of ice for such a short time period wouldn't have caused lasting damage, but it is something to be mindful of. Does... that make sense, young Todoroki?"
"Yes," said Todoroki, head bowed.
"All right. Young Uraraka, thank you for hitting the emergency stop button. It showed good thinking and good awareness. Young Tokoyami, your decision to hide the bomb in the basement was a good one, complimentary to your quirk."
Izuku glanced over at Monoma. He had a sinking suspicion he knew what quirk he would copy.
.
After moving to a new building, Iida and Ashido managed to pull a win as heroes from Ojiro and Shouji by melting a hole in the ceiling above the bomb and then jumping through to tag it after Iida confirmed its location with a scouting run. The general consensus of the class was that it was surprisingly clever and out of the box, but that it probably wouldn't have been feasible in real life. Ashido had then sheepishly admitted that she'd come up with the idea after hearing Izuku mumble about it.
This, of course, made Izuku blush. Strawberry would probably bee his nickname from now on.
Better than Deku.
It was his turn to go set up, now.
He was unlikely to be able to beat Hagakure and Monoma at the same time, even if Monoma didn't copy any quirks at all. Assuming they didn't split up, a ridiculous course of action, he'd have to find a way to protect the bomb other than physically defending it.
This was the problem that had been plaguing him all afternoon.
He had to hide it. Then, he either had to hide himself or use his location to steer them away from where the bomb really was. His capture would also lose him the match, so he had to be careful.
He carried the bomb to the top floor. Uraraka's quirk could get them up there, but Izuku didn't think Monoma could handle the nausea. And if he did have a time limit, he wouldn't want to be airborne when it ran out. Sero had demonstrated his quirk could get him up the side of the building, but that had clearly also required a lot of skill in climbing, not just the quirk itself.
Iida's quirk would get Monoma to the top of the building fast, but since he'd have to go room by room... Either way, the top floor would slow them down the most, buy Izuku the most time.
The room he picked was full of prop boxes. Izuku had to rearrange them to completely hide the bomb, and there was a chance Monoma and Hagakure would remember what it looked like before, from the camera feeds, but he hoped they'd overlook it.
He still had time. Next...
The second floor had office equipment in it. Clearly old junk the school didn't mind loosing. Izuku pulled as much of it out into the hallway as he could, his experience from the beach helping him maneuver quickly. He dumped a lot of it into the stairwell. The rest he left in the hallways.
How much time did he have?
Not long.
He ran up the stairs, to the fourth floor, where Ashido had melted a hole in the floor. Here, he had multiple egress points. It would be harder for them to corner him. Also...
He randomly closed half the doors on the floor. He could pretend to be guarding one of them. Delay them. How much longer?
No time at all.
Right on schedule, the air went dry and cold. Izuku, having planned for this, leapt for one of the door frames and held on. A thin layer of ice, not as thick as the one on the floor, crusted over his gloved fingers.
Izuku counted to five, then let his hands slip out of his gloves and dropped to the floor. Then he reached up and tugged his now empty gloves out of the ice.
He inspected the ice momentarily, and tested his ability to move on it. It wasn't as even or as thick as it had been when Todoroki used it, and the surface was a difficult and unpredictable mixture of smooth and rough... but it would become slicker as it melted.
Good. Izuku had predicted this. It made his closed doors and stacked boxes much more formidable obstacles. The ice wouldn't allow doors to open easily, and the boxes would also be reinforced and hard to move.
Izuku was glad for the conversation All Might had with Todoroki. Although it probably hadn't been his intention, the way he had phrased his commentary on Todoroki's freezing strategy had made it seem like an automatic win, given that it wasn't used against someone who'd be seriously injured by it.
Izuku hadn't been sure they'd do it, since it would handicap Hagakure so much. She couldn't walk around on ice barefoot. Unless she had a secondary mutation that made her skin tougher, or less sensitive to temperature- that would be so cool! No, focus, focus.
Monoma wouldn't have Iida's quirk, either with this strategy. Even if was unfamiliar with speed quirks, he would know that high speeds and ice didn't mix... Unless you were a speed skater, Izuku supposed. But Monoma didn't have ice skates- Unless, unless he took Yaoyorozu's quirk and made ice skates. But that would be horribly impractical with this uneven ice, and probably wouldn't work with Iida's quirk at all. So.
He'd probably have Yaoyorozu's quirk anyway. And after that, for this exercise, Jirou's would be the most valuable. With Jirou's quirk, Monoma would be able to locate Izuku quickly.
Another reason to separate himself from the bomb.
They were coming.
He hid himself out of immediate sight, in the room with the hole, on the off chance that Monoma couldn't hold that many quirks.
There was a clatter from the stairwell.
They were coming.
Muffled voices. A louder thump.
"Maybe if you hadn't frozen everything-"
A sort of fwoosh brought an oddly warm breeze and Izuku hissed. Todoroki's quirk must be more than ice. Given his overall appearance... Fire? Izuku was screwed.
Well. Hopefully his precautions would at least get him a good grade.
There were more scrapes and clatters as Hagakure and Monoma forced their way through the stairwell. Then, relative silence.
They were coming.
"I thought you said he was on this floor," said Hagakure, plaintively.
"He must have gotten free," said Monoma.
"Can't you listen for him again?"
There was a pause. Monoma must have responded nonverbally.
"We'll just have to be careful checking everything out," said Hagakure. "The bomb must be on this floor, after all."
Okay. Okay, great, this was good news for Izuku. He eyed the hole in the floor. Part of him really didn't want to jump through. His brain was supplying him with all the things that could go wrong with such a jump. Especially with the layer of ice. Ugh, he should have dragged one of the office desks up underneath it.
Too late now.
Minding his visibility, Izuku crept over to the side of the hole and lowered himself until he was hanging by his finger tips.
It was still a long fall. Monoma and Hagakure's footsteps were growing closer.
He let go.
He tried to hit the ground properly, but his roll turned into a slide, and he hit a wall at a higher speed than he would have liked. Reflexively he grabbed at his left arm. Ow.
He knew this was going to happen.
"He's on the third floor!"
"What?"
"He jumped through Ashido's hole!"
Izuku forced himself to his feet and sprinted towards the stairs. The second floor had more hiding places than the third. At the last minute, something twinged in the back of his mind, and he tried to stop. Tried. The ice made this difficult.
His legs went out from underneath him, and he went skidding down the hallway on his back, taking a mercifully, mercifully, clothed Hagakure out at the ankles. They slid together into the bottom of the stairs descending from the fourth floor, further battering Izuku's poor arm.
He dodged Hagakure's capture tape and briefly considered pulling out his own, but there was Monoma, cautiously coming down the icy stairs.
Icy stairs.
It seemed neither Izuku nor Monoma had fully considered the obstacles that would result from coating a building like this in ice. Todoroki's ability to maneuver easily on this terrain was, in retrospect, a keystone of the 'freeze everything' strategy, not incidental.
He needed to get away.
He pushed Hagakure off of himself (and noted that she was just as muscular as he was) and slid on his knees to the banister. He pulled himself up and slid down the rail, using the ice to his benefit. Using his uninjured arm, he gripped the end of the banister connected to the wall to slingshot himself down the second floor hallway.
... and almost right into a desk he'd half forgotten he'd put there. He dodged it and recovered quickly before scrambling over the other obstacles in the hallway. He came to a scraping halt and tucked himself into the leg well of one of the desks. A convenient bar meant he could keep his feet off the ground and out of sight as well.
Just like hiding from bullies. Only less dangerous and more fun.
How much time was left?
It had taken them about five minutes to get past the desks on the stairs, then maybe two or three to get to the fourth floor? They hadn't been moving quickly, probably because of the ice. Then, they'd been on the fourth floor for another couple of minutes before Izuku dropped to the third, even if it had felt longer to Izuku. The tussle on the third had taken a minute, tops, so he had... Four minutes left? Less, now.
He could win this. He could run out the clock. Maybe it wasn't the most heroic way to win, but he was supposed to be playing the villain, and he hoped Mr. Yagi would be proud of him anyway.
"Show yourself!" called Monoma. "Or I'll freeze you out."
Could he do that? Maybe he had Jirou's quirk at first, but switched to Todoroki's later, and lost access to Jirou's? If only he knew more about how Monoma's quirk worked... It could be a bluff, too. Even if it wasn't, why would he reveal himself? This late in the game, even if he was frozen in place, he could still win.
And winning... it wasn't something he got to do very often.
A buzz signaled the end of the match. "Villains win! Or, rather villain wins? Good job everyone! Come on out for the final debrief."
.
"MVP, MVP, MVP," chanted Yoichi, Banjo, and En, arms slung around each others' shoulders.
"Our boy is MVP!" cried Banjo.
"You know what this means, of course," said Hikage during a pause in the noise. The other ghosts looked at him. "It means, my quirk is the most valuable. The greatest power in the universe is the power of anxiety."
"Take that back!" said Yoichu, throwing an imaginary kazoo at Hikage. "The most powerful thing in the universe is the power of friendship. Everyone knows that!"
"What about those two?" asked Hikage, pointing at Second and Third.
"Unfortunately, the power of spite is also great," said Yoichi. "Even so, they will soon find themselves defeated."
Nana rubbed her temples. "If I hadn't given up on sanity within ten minutes of waking up in here, this would be what did me in."
.
After an intense practical, the next stop was the nurse's office. There, the class found Asui already mostly recovered, and Izuku found out that he had, in fact broken his arm.
"Are you sure it isn't just a sprain? It is broken?"
"A fracture, and, yes, quite sure. But a sprain can actually be worse than a break- many true sprains never quite heal correctly... either way, with my quirk you don't have to worry about it." She pressed her lips to Izuku's forehead. He felt his energy ebb to a new low. "You should talk to Mr. Aizawa about falling techniques. Your body type is more like his than your other mentor's."
"I- I will," promised Izuku.
"Good. You can go get changed, now."
"Thanks," said Izuku, not quite wobbling out of the room.
"Midoriya!"
He almost jumped out of his skin. "A-ah! Uraraka!"
"Sorry to startle you!"
"No, no, it's fine. What is it?"
"Oh, well, Iida and I were wondering if you'd like to come out with use to a café after school? It's nearby and apparently it has discounts for UA students?"
"Indeed! My older brother talked about it frequently when he was a student here!"
"W-well," said Izuku. He looked at All Might, who was awkwardly supervising and directing other students in the hallway to the locker rooms. All Might caught his eye and nodded. "Sure! That sounds like fun!"
.
This would be the last time Shouta would have to nap after school for a while. From tomorrow on, he'd be alternating quirk counseling with Midoriya with hero work. Why did he agree to do this again?
Kan opened the door to the break room. With him came the acrid smell of smoke and hot dust. "Which companies did the first year costumes this year?" he asked, voice dangerously soft enough to impress Aizawa.
"Why?" asked Hizashi.
"Because I want to... talk to whoever thought it was a good idea to give a fifteen-year-old with no training in demolition not one, but two weapons that could level buildings at full charge. I just want to talk."
Judging by the expression on Kan's face, Shouta seriously doubted that.
Kan took a deep breath. "What about your hellions?"
"Don't know. Yagi had them today."
"And you didn't watch?"
"I was in court."
"What's wrong with Yagi, anyway?"
Shouta, Hizashi, and Kan all turned to where Yagi was splayed in a chair. If the scene were a painting, it could easily be titled 'depression.'
"I'm a failure as a teacher and a hero," he moaned.
"Huh?" said Hizashi. "Why?"
"Young Asui nearly became hypothermic, and young Midoriya fractured his arm."
There was a beat of silence as the others waited for him to go on.
"What?" Kan asked. "Is that it?"

Note
One of the central characters in a fantasy story I'm writing has torture as part of her backstory. She was captured by an evil race, and one individual in particular put her through a "training" regime designed to turn her into a useful/trustworthy slave. Specifically the goals of the training were:
- destroy her sense of self / agency
- overwrite her ingrained response of healing herself when injured (she has magical healing powers)
- an affectionate or worshipful disposition towards her captors
- immediate obedience to any command
I feel like both physical and psychological torture / mental conditioning are probably appropriate, though I'm leaning away from including sexual abuse. I honestly don't know much about torture at all and the only things that come to mind as producing a result similar to what I'm looking for are the Game of Thrones torture sequence and the use of obdience collars in the Codex Alera book series. The latter is very interesting to me because it is a magical device that inflicts pain in reaction to disobedience but also inflicts pleasure to reward obedience.
I guess I'm just wondering if you have any advice for what kinds of methods would be good to include in a process designed to produce obedience, rather than torture for its own sake or to extract information, as well as if there are any common pitfalls I should try to avoid in writing about such a thing.
The training itself won't be in the book, but I need to be familiar with it for backstory purposes because later in the story this character encounters her torturer again, and is subjected to some further abuse before she finally overcomes her fear and kills him.
Alright well I’m going to be straight up with you: the scenario you’ve presented is a very common torture apologist trope. It’s incredibly unrealistic. And it’s unrealistic in ways that support torture by claiming it can be ‘useful’.
Which probably means that you’re new to the blog and haven’t heard me give this talk before. That’s OK, we all learn sometime and it’s not my intention to shame you for the fact you’re not as obsessed with this stuff as I am or couldn’t afford to shell out for the books.
Torture does not produce obedience. The best evidence we have right now suggests it encourages active resistance.
If you got a lot of your inspiration from Game of Thrones then frankly I’m not surprised you came up with apologia. The torture in that series is incredibly badly handled. And a big part of the point of running this blog is that most people are getting their information on torture from shows like that. Which happens because the research is inaccessible and hasn’t been popularised the way fictional tropes (sometimes fictional tropes literally started by torturers) have been popularised.
The important thing is what you choose to do now.
I’m going to break down the problems here and make some suggestions for what you could do instead.
Firstly: there is no torture or abuse that will guarantee obedience. Pain does not make people meek or compliant or willing to follow commands.
Torture survivors are not broken.
They are not ‘controlled’ by their torturers and the suggestion that they are is used in the real world to bar real survivors from treatment. It is also used to bar them from entering safe countries and to argue that they shouldn’t be allowed visas or passports.
The best statistics we have for any sort of compliance under torture come from analysis of historical French data where torture was used to try and force confessions (something we know torture can sometimes do).
The ‘success’ rate averaged at 10%. Under torture 90% of people will not comply long enough to sign their name.
Secondly: torture does not and can not ‘make’ a victim feel ‘worshipful’ towards their torturer. The suggestion is kind of like asking if someone can tap dance immediately after removing the bones from their legs.
Torturers have no control over a victim’s emotions. They have no control over their symptoms. They have no control over their beliefs.
And there is no such thing as a torture that can change someone’s mind in a way torturers can control.
Once again, this fictional trope is used by politicians and the media to justify marginalising real torture survivors.
I have read hundreds, possibly thousands, of accounts from torture survivors. I’ve read historic and modern accounts. I’ve read accounts from all sort of people from all over the globe. I have never seen a survivor say anything positive about their torturers. I have never seen anything close to toleration.
A lot of survivors are blisteringly angry at their torturers. A lot of them feel overwhelming levels of spite and some report literally putting themselves at risk of death in order to spite their torturers. And yes, a lot of them are afraid too. None of these emotions are mutually exclusive.
Affection is impossible. We are not wired that way.
Thirdly: I understand that ‘evil races’ are a long standing fantasy trope but it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention the racism inherent in that idea. That some people are ‘born bad’.
I’d strongly suggest you look up the Black, Indian and First Nations people that I know are on this site critiquing these kinds of fantasy tropes. Because they will be able to explain it better then I can.
Fourthly: the term ‘psychological torture’ is a pretty common dog whistle for torture apologia.
Most of the time tortures that people dub ‘psychological’ are things with real, physical effects that lead to lasting injury and death. They just don’t tend to leave obvious external scars. I use Rejali’s term ‘clean torture’ for these techniques. Researchers distinguish them from scarring tortures because they are harder to detect and prove in court.
The majority of survivors today will have experienced clean torture. They will have no obvious physical scars. But they will still be disabled. They’re ‘just’ less likely to see any form of justice for it.
Fifthly: torture is a terrible training method because it decreases a person’s ability to learn.
Torture causes memory problems. It also often causes lasting physical injuries that make performing basic tasks more difficult. And it causes a lot of serious psychological problems which make performing basic tasks more difficult.
A trained person who was never tortured will always out perform someone whose training involved torture.
I probably sound quite angry here.
I write fantasy and I also write about torture a lot. But I can’t imagine that it’s just flavour for a fantasy world or some artefact of the past. Torture is a real, present threat in the country that I grew up in. If I was to return now I could, literally, be tortured and executed.
If you want to include torture in your world, in your story then you are committing to telling someone else’s story. You are representing an incredibly marginalised group of people and you are presenting that representation to a third group, one that has never had contact with real torture survivors.
Are you comfortable with the idea of telling your peers that survivors are still controlled by ‘the enemy’? That they’re passive? That they don’t have the capacity to make their own decisions?
Are you comfortable knowing that the popularity of this message keeps millions of genocide survivors in refugee camps, blocked from citizenship, aid and safety?
I understand feeling attached to a story and a character. And I understand that this information is hard to find. Hell I’m probably going to end up with the only English copy of one of the pivotal textbooks because I’m shelling out to get it translated.
You say you want to write a torture survivor. With respect I don’t think you know what a torture survivor looks like.
I think the most helpful, and kindest, thing I can do here is describe what torture does to people. Because I can’t tell you whether that’s something you want to write. I could try and rebuild this scenario for you (and if you decide you’re interested in that after reading all of this and all the links then I suggest looking through the blog tags for ICURE, torture as training, Black Widow and Overwatch.) But I think you need to decide whether you actually want to write a torture survivor first.
Here’s a post on the most common torture apologia tropes.
Here’s the post on the types of memory problems torture commonly causes. I strongly recommend picking at least one.
Remember that this would never go away. Improvement and recovery in torture survivors means learning to live with symptoms. The symptoms themselves are permanent.
It’s a hundred different alarms set up on their phone to try and make up for the forgetfulness that makes them miss appointments. It’s the little bottle of perfume in their pocket to bring themselves back to reality when they get intrusive memories at work.
Here’s a post on the other common symptoms.
You want something in the range of 3-5 of those, though more are likely if your character is held for years. Each of them should be severe. Every single symptom should have a large, negative, impact on the character’s daily life.
Do you know anyone with chronic pain? It warps their world. Work can become impossible. Basic household tasks like getting dressed, cooking, cleaning the dishes are done through gritted teeth or not at all. Hobbies and ‘fun’ activities dwindle as they struggle to find a way to do them that doesn’t hurt. Interaction with other people, even loved ones, can easily become barbed.
Because the pain makes everything more difficult. It means everything takes more energy, more effort. Which means that things fall by the wayside, whether that’s by a pile of mouldering dishes in the sink or snapping at a child. It means tears and the social judgement that follows them. It means the world narrowing as it gets harder to go out.
Do you see what I mean? Every part of life.
That’s an example for one symptom. You need to work out at least four. Then figure out how they interact. Then figure out what the character can do to make her life better.
With chronic pain that can mean painkillers but it’s always more then that. It’s re-learning how to do things; how to put on trousers without aggravating the bad knee, how to sew with one hand. It means learning to cut down on what they do and it means learning a new sort of flexibility; accepting that there are days when the pain is too much.
It can mean having the same conversation about disability over and over again. With family, with friends, with colleagues. ‘I can’t do that.’ ‘I can do that sometimes but not always.’ ‘That will hurt me.’ ‘I can’t use that chair.’ ‘I can’t get my arms that high above my shoulders.’ ‘I need help with this.’
And that sometimes means learning a kind of patience that is really barely held back rage. Or perhaps I’m projecting a little with this last one.
If you’ve never met a torture survivor, if you’ve never looked at a survivor’s work, then all this is difficult. You’re trying to imagine something from first principals with nothing to fall back on.
So let’s bring some survivors into the discussion here. Some reality.
Who’s listened to Fela? How about Bobi Wine?
Fela Kuti was the father of modern Afro beats music. He was tortured multiple times and during one attack, which destroyed his home, his mother was murdered by the military. When he got out of jail Fela marched her funeral procession past the biggest barracks in Nigeria’s biggest city. He wrote two songs about this attack and he doubled down on his opposition to the military government.
Fela’s music started causing riots.
You can read what I have to say about him here. You can listen to his music on youtube.
Here’s an interview with Bobi Wine, which was conducted shortly after he was tortured in Uganda. He talked about how he was determined to go back and continue fighting. Which he did. He even ran against the president.
I’ve also got a short piece on Searle who was a cartoonist captured by the Japanese during World War 2. His drawings of what happened in To the Kwai and Back are worth seeing. Especially if you want to write atrocities on this scale. They will show you the scale and how to focus on the small, human elements despite that overwhelming scale.
Alleg’s The Question is pretty much a must, it’s one of the most thorough accounts from the Franco-Algerian war.
Monroe’s A Darkling Plain is also a must, it’s a series of interviews with survivors of various different conflicts and atrocities. Some are torture survivors. Some are not. It is essential reading because it shows the variety in survivors as well as giving a sense of their lives beyond the symptoms.
Finally Amnesty International has literally hundreds of interviews and studies available for free online.
The most important decision for any story with regards to torture is whether it should be there at all.
So much of this topic is intimidating and so much of it is difficult to write. Not just in the ‘oh this is horribly effecting’ sense but in the ‘I have twelve things to juggle in this simple scene’ sense.
Ask yourself what torture adds to this character and this story. What does this backstory actually give this character?
Because if the point is to have her vulnerable and then ultimately triumphing violently over her attackers I don’t think you want a torture scenario. You could get the same thing from a bad guy trying to drug her and having the kidnapping fail when she fights him off, clumsy but effective nonetheless.
And she could still come out of something like that traumatised.
Right now I really don’t see this adding anything but torture apologia to your story.
Handling torture well in a story means accepting that it can’t be the same story without it. It means watching the characters and narrative warp under the weight of it. It means lasting effects, for all the characters and for the world itself.
I believe you are capable of writing that if you want to, pet. But this ain’t it.
Edit: I’m having trouble seeing the beginning of the answer here. Can anyone let me know if there are formatting issues again please? The first word in the htmal is ‘Alright’ but what I’m seeing on tumblr starts 8 paragraphs in.
