“My disagreement with you,” Ben starts, voice soft and cold and tempering a lifetime of bitterness, “has a little to do with the manner in which you publicly and savagely humiliated a child in the course of you refusing him as your padawan, yes.” Ben inhales deeply and stops walking, turning on Qui-Gon in the empty corridor. “But my real disagreement with you, as you call it, has much more to do with how you have proven utterly inept in accepting the fact that Xanatos du Crion made his own choices.”

complicated feelings on jiang fengmian aside, i think the reason i don’t buy into the whole “jfm favoured wei wuxian much more than his son” and tend to agree with wwx’s words to jc that of course jfm would be more stern with jc because jc’s his son is because—my asian parenting experience has been somewhat the same (and i actually think this might be a bit of a universal experience regardless), not in the exact way mxtx portrays this relationship but in that my parents and parents of every single person i have ever known (mostly; there are always a few exceptions) show this pattern of being sweet and cordial and generally non-disciplinary towards kids who aren’t their own and being way stricter and more stern with their own children because they are the ones they are parenting. there’s almost this mutually known boundary that you don’t go and yell at another’s kid to correct bad behaviour, rather the impetus of imparting important values and lessons is reserved as your right for your own kids. that’s how i’ve always read jiang fengmian’s dynamic with wei wuxian vs jiang cheng. he was stern with jc because that’s his son and heir, someone he cares for very deeply. on the other hand, he does care for wei wuxian as well but he has never crossed that mental boundary from uncle to father figure in his head and his interactions with wei wuxian have never read as paternal or favourably partial over jc to me.

it's like, i really do enjoy most of the bats as characters and i really do like a lot of their comics. but also i am sooooo tired of them being hailed as better than literally everyone else. both in fanon but also in comics (modern ones are esp egregious imo, like WHAT was that shit about batman and the joker being the most dangerous men on the planet. hi. have you heard of lanterns? speedsters? supers? actually if i keep listing groups who could kick batman's ass we'd be here all day). they're like kudzu. that shit needs to stay in its native environment (funky little neo-noir detective stories) and stop being an invasive species (putting down everyone else to make them seem cooler). put bruce wayne back into a murder mystery setting that isn't about saving the world but is about saving one person or one family that no one else would've saved right now or so help me god. the whole invasive species cross contamination thing is unhealthy for both him And the other ecosystems he keeps getting transplanted into. please. it's so dark in here

Animorphs Book club book 8
My reaction can be summarised as this (yet again):
Tumblr media
I don't have many thoughts because uh. That was depressing as hell and I need to stare at a wall.
But I DO gotta say that the subplot with the dead "wife" was so telenovela-esque that for a good minute it was more funny than depressing. Then it got depressing. But it was so jarring and so far out of the left field that for a good second my friend and I had to pause the audiobook and laugh because ????????? Unhinged to just appear, go "I am Eslin, I have a G U N. My secret wife was killed. By my boss. Now I yearn for sweet sweet revenge." and not elaborate. Like. Damn dude ok. Sorry about our wife also. Fucking killed me that he continued like "So anyway I reacted adequately by killing all of my boss' friends. Starvation style." Like ???? Jjhsgdjsdfghsjdfh what????? I mean damn I do respect the grind set but also that's such an absurd escalation out of context. Did your boss kill your wife? Kill all of his friends! And in context the most absurd part is probably the notion that Visser 3 has friends??????? Like??? Wait no Eslin. Eslin wait. I love your John Wick-esque "fridged wife" trope swag but you need to slow down. I need details. I need you to tell me HOW your boss even has friends.
In my heart I do not believe we will see that madman ever again but on god I do wish for an insane telenovela-esque sequence of him just showing up at the most random moment to do exactly one thing and that's to pull a gun on Visser 3. For no reason, I just think it would be kinda funny. Like,,,did your boss kill your wife?:
Kill all of his friends
Acquire a G U N
Attempt to make the local Andalite youth assassinate your boss for you
Pull the gun on your boss
???????
Profit (probably die)
Aside from that, I also need to say that the moment when Ax called Tobias his close friend at the end was so sweet. Also ngl kinda...concerning/harrowing how much Tobias really doesn't give a shit about not being a human. Like it doesn't seem so concerning from other points of view but the way Ax gets increasingly weirded out by Tobias not asking him about the nothlit (idk if I'm spelling that right rn) really reminds you that it IS kinda worrying. Like I get it, I mean...Tobias has no family that cares about him, he has no friends outside of the Animorphs friend group, why would he care? But it's still kinda...yeah.
Also unimaginably surprised by the amount of collective guilt present in the Andalite society. You'd think they're Catholic or something the way they keep beating themselves up and force everyone to also beat themselves up and their system itself is saturated with the guilt and shame and they teach it to kids at school from an early age. Like. Jesus Christ calm down. Stop that. As the Animorphs said at the end of the book - the Andalites made an oopsie once. It sucked, yes, it continues to have consequences that suck, yes, but it happens. Sometimes you think you're doing something kind and it turns into a disaster. That does not mean you should beat yourself up for it or, god forbid, tell other people that they should not be kind lest they make a mistake. Damn I guess we should all be cold assholes forever, huh? I'm sure that can't have any negative consequences.
Andalite society in general seems kinda unhinged. Like...do I get why it is like that? Yeah. But do I find it unhinged? Also yeah. Like ok duty and the collective being the most important things is totally sensible for a prey animal. Safety of the herd and all that. But it's still kinda unhinged that they do make everyone have duty as their number 1 priority and that they have rituals devoted to it. Not all rituals are spiritual or religious in nature, but the morning ritual is kinda...borderline religious in a way. More spiritual than religious, I suppose, but yeah.
Also I love Ax so much. 10/10 character. He has it all: an incredibly hilarious desire for cinnamon buns, the inability to act like a human being (same dude), spitting random facts at completely random times, a thirst for blood only a 13(?) years old could have, a dysfunctional obsession with duty and doing what is right that only a 13(?) years old could have (also lol yeah dude I was like that when I was 13 too. dw you'll grow out of it), he can even code. And he might even be bi (I'm joking but I' referring to the fact that he was like "Yeah so when I morph into a human form I suddenly agree that Rachel is beautiful and that Marco is cute.").
#animorphs#animorphs book club#honestly though i was starting to wonder WHEN some Yeerks would go 'fuck it i dont hate to put up with that idiots shit. i vote for mutiny.#because like...Visser 3 is...well id describe him as the empires weakest soldier. like he seems to have SOME brain cells rattling around bu#he doesnt seem to use them correctly?? like ok he is pretty paranoid and that itself is annoying. he is obsessed with Andalites enough to b#mockingly called 'half-Andalite fool' by some of his subordinates. he lacks charisma and cannot for the life of him even look like a leader#of any sort. he is deeply unpleasant to be around and nobody enjoys his company. he is half-decent at planning but only half-decent#and what he manages to plan he tends to ruin by every other aspect of himself (either he antagonises his subordinates so much that they don#tell him information or he makes an impulsive decision etc etc)#he is nearly fully incompetent and his only advantage is that everyone is afraid of him. but the problem is that theyre afraid for a#good reason and that is BAD because that means that one day theyll become too pissed to be afraid. like. ok. he has a famine on his hands.#he makes the brutal and cruel but strategically sound decision to reduce the numbers of the soldiers. he immediately fucks up big time#by killing them more or less at random instead of being strategic about it. a strategic plan would be to kill someone and find out who#all of their colleagues are and kill those too. if you dont kill a subordinates colleague because they happen to have a more important#position; of course that person will be pissed off and probably organise a group with OTHER similar people and that group WILL#attempt to murder you (probably brutally) or die trying. so basically he antagonises literally everyone around him by being personally#unpleasant; volatile; conceited and impulsively aggressive AND incapable of as much as hearing feedback or willing to change his mind#and the last point also antagonises people on a formal level. and he also kills their friends. at random. and threatens everyone constantly#hes like a if a chihuahua had a huge scorpion tail and it was absolutely deadset on asserting itself by simply slashing everything and#everyone with that tail. like genuinely he has no charisma he doesnt even pretend to care about anything that doesnt interest him he is#inflexible he cant adapt his plans half of the time because he wants them to be THAT way and not THAT way also why is he like my mother?#like the longer im typing this for the more i feel like im just talking about my mother. damn. thats depressing.#anyway. my point was yeah i would have been surprised if nobody wanted his head on a plate. i think all the Yeerks who are sick of his shit#should unionise. i just think itd be funny. like several of them are just like 'Man i dont give a shit about this war or whatever i just#want to be allowed to have emotions and to love my coworker over here and also my boss is a nightmare i hope he gets colic and dies'#like ok guys i have a solution. G U N

So I went to the wiki page for the henghill Bullet & Brain mission of 2.2 looking for some dialogue I had missed and
a) I found something incredibly tasty that slotted into some other thoughts I'd been having, more on that on another day, and
b) I saw this super fun little trivia at the bottom, which!
Tumblr media
I knew Penacony characters like Boothill took a lot of inspirations from old movies, but I didn't realize it was even in his and Dan Heng's relationship, that's so cool!!
It fits them very well, it's such a fun reference. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was an old buddy Western film (from 1969- nice) about a pair of outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the leader of a gang, and described as clever, affable, and talkative. Meanwhile, his closest companion, the Sundance Kid, was known as a man of few words.
Cassidy's original birth name was much more plain, but similar to Boothill, he took on a new moniker when he became an outlaw. "Cassidy" had been the last name of his beloved mentor, who taught him how to shoot and ride. And Sundance Kid was known as he was because Sundance was the name of his hometown, and it was the only place that had ever managed to catch and jail him, back when he'd been younger (also similar to Dan Heng, but ouch).
These two stick together like glue throughout the length of the film- through Cassidy's leadership of the gang being challenged, through a train robbery gone wrong, through being pursued by mercenaries, and even through fleeing to Bolivia and trying to start over together.
I don't want to say too much more, since the mission title is referencing one specific movie that I've never seen. I kinda wanna watch it now, though, just to see the inspiration that went into Boothill and Dan Heng and how they get along. I just think it's really sweet that these two were literally made to be the best of bros, how lovely is that. 💕
#honkai star rail#this can be ship or plantonic tbh yall are always free to tag my ramblings as you please haha#just! they're so sweet!!#FWENDS#i would love to see more of them being a dynamic duo further down the line ♡#i think the film moved things along a little quicker but the real life Cassidy and Sundance were actually in south america for a few years#they fled there to get away from pursuers along with Sundance's girlfriend Etta Place.#supposedly they managed to buy a small ranch and the three of them lived peacefully (and even lawfully!) together for like three years-#-until the law caught up with them again#at some point Etta Place returned to the US reportedly due to illness rather than not wanting to get caught like in the film#Sundance may or may not have escorted her back. but whether he did or not he returned to South America with Cassidy#the two of them eventually got into a huge firefight with authorities where Sundance was fatally shot and Cassidy chose to end his own life#that's the most common story anyway. some also say Cassidy snuck back into the US again where he lived quietly until his death.#but it reads kind of like rumors of Elvis Presley sightings to me BSMZKNSKS#the film ended much more happily with the two of them getting into shenanigans and a freeze frame of them in a hail of bullets haha#i wanna see Dan Heng and Boothill fight together too it would be so cool aaaaaa#they would be great at getting into shenanigans! as we've already seen!!#fun bonus info: Boothill's ult literally puts black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to look like a widescreen Western movie#fun bonus info 2: Cassidy was regarded with respect by some people bc he never stole from the poor he only robbed big companies#this is actually nicer than Boothill is in canon bc he openly admits he will rob someone blind if he doesn't like them BSKZKKZMSKDK#(although I feel like its implied he has more standards for this than he gives himself credit for.#like he makes it pretty clear he doesn't particularly like Argenti at first and thinks he's annoying as shit but I'm sure he didn't rob him#...would have been real fucking funny if he did though oh my god I would love to see him try that. it absolutely would not work BSKZKNSKSJS#hsr#henghill#bootheng#dan heng#boothill#hsr boothill#hsr dan heng

I wonder what Kyoko would've thought of Shigure. She's the only non-Sohma adult in the series who's also in his age group (albeit barely - she's about a decade older than him) and I feel like her optimism combined with her no-nonsense sensibilities would've been an interesting foil to Shigure's morally grayness hidden under a cheerful exterior.
They probably could have bonded over pursuing socially unacceptable relationships and being outcasts in their family (if Shigure was ever able to be even slightly honest with her, that is). I don't think they'd have hung out often, but in a Kyoko Lives AU where Tohru befriends Kyo and Yuki, it's likely they would've had to meet at least once or twice. I can't tell if they'd like each other or if it'd be more of a "polite acquaintances" sort of thing. Probably some awkward mixture of both lol.

{ Due to the fact that I am bored and just because I can, Imma make a post about some of Dickson's nicknames! }
Tumblr media
Dick
The very first nickname he was ever given, the only nickname he'd come to cherish, and the only nickname he continues to use and constantly go by to this very day. Despite it just being a shortened version of his name, and most people believe it to be nothing special, the nickname "Dick" is something that he finds very precious due to the simple fact it was given to him by his very first and only friend during his childhood, Leif, an orphan from China that was forced to partake in his grandfather's battle royal experiment. Leif, or better known as "Leafy" to Dickson, was the only person he could rely on during his times of need; whether it was Leif providing emotional or physical support, Leif could always be found at Dickson's side. In time, the two became best friends but thought of each other as more than that, deciding that they were more something akin to brothers than friends. Though said friendship/brotherhood was cut short when Leif was murdered, and all that Dickson was left with was the nickname he had given him and the memories of what used to be.
Guard Dog
A nickname he was given by is handler, aka his combat instructor, Wolfgang von Schröder, after completing a week long mission to defend a laboratory from intruders that wished to steal one of the head scientist's life work (single-handedly killing them all with the skills he'd learned from Wolfgang and the intruders within the lab). By the time he was thirteen years old, Dickson was stronger than a vast majority of Wolfgang's students and never seemed to grow fatigued even after enduring long periods of combat without being given a single break. From then onward, Dickson was always assigned guard missions until he reached the age of sixteen, where he then handled assassinations and transporting illegal materials to and from other countries.
The Doctor
The nickname Dickson earned via his various clientele within the underground black market after preforming numerous illegal surgeries and providing life altering substances. After having the medical board deem his vision and goals unethical, such as using hardened criminals as test subjects within medical/science labs in order to create new medicines and vaccines for possible future outbreaks or using them as free organ donors once they die for those in need, Dickson was reached out to by a secret underground organization known simply as the "Novus Ordo Seclorum", or the NOS, that believed in a world where the worst of society should become the stepping stones of humanity's future to a better world where no one would have to worry about illness or growing old. Soon after joining the organization, Dickson was quick to rise in ranks and became known as "The Doctor" to all of those within the underground, gaining the trust of everyone and was often even revered as a "God of Life" — a feat that Dickson couldn't exactly feel happy about despite all his efforts, especially given the fact Dickson merely wanted to use his methods to help others, not to supply the greedy with things they shouldn't possess.
Fido
The nickname Heisenberg gave to him — once Mother Miranda infects him with the Cadou, turning him into a werewolf-like bio-weapon — after imprisoning him within the Heisenberg Factory in his Resident Evil 8!AU (not his canon RE8 verse), keeping him chained and collared to prevent him from disobeying his commands. This nickname is meant to degrade and demean Dickson, forcing him into the submissive role of guard dog and protector of the Heisenberg Factory, while also maintaining a sense of inescapable ownership over over him. It is a nickname that Dickson greatly despises and even feels ashamed of due to his inability to disobey his master. [Note: Please keep in mind that this AU was created with @nokrysalis and because of this, the remaining half of this section applies only to her.] Due to the fact that Dickson despises Heisenberg, if Ethan chooses not to pursue and kill Crystal Dimitrescue, Dickson will not interfere with Ethan's objective to kill Heisenberg and will even assist him in taking him to his master — but if Ethan instead chose to kill Crystal alongside the rest of the Dimitrescue household, Dickson endlessly pursue Ethan and try to kill him every step of the way until he either reaches Heisenberg or he kills Dickson (this is due to the fact that Dickson loves Crystal and she was the only other person who cared for his well-being).
Dickie
The nickname his late fiance, Janus, had given him to spite the nickname Leif had given in attempt to sully the bond and memories they shared together. Janus had been made aware of Dickson's time within the containment units, along with the fact he'd made friends with another child named Leif, thus becoming jealous of the pure relationship the two shared together. The nickname was often used whenever Janus would scold or degrade Dickson for not preforming in a way that she deemed acceptable, usually speaking to him in a derogatory manner before growing physically violent towards him. DoL!AU: The nickname given to her by her girlfriend and classmate, Eri, as a shorten more cutesy version of her name. Unlike her Resident Evil counterpart, Dickson finds the nickname rather endearing simply because of the fact that Eri was the one who came up with it (and the fact she's obsessed with her adds to the appeal). Though due to the fact Eri was the one who began calling her this, Dickson has a tendency to grow extremely hostile towards anyone that tries to use said nickname, believing that they are trying to sully the precious nickname given to her by the love of her life and will even kill them without hesitation. [Note: Please keep in mind that this AU was created with @hakusins and because of this, this section only applies to her.]
Brother
The nickname he received from a worldwide serial killer/assassin known only by the name of Enigma when he was merely eight years old. Meeting her by pure chance one night after he'd completed a delivery for his grandfather to one of their esteemed clients, Dickson was rescued from a group of kidnappers by Engima (who had just finished a task for her own grandfather), who in turn, then gave her a caramel square as his way of thanking her for helping him. From then forward, due to the fact he wasn't scared of her (despite her killing said people right in front of him) and the fact Dickson looked eerily like her missing younger brother, Enigma gained a weird sort of affinity towards him and began stalking him in a obsessively loving type of fashion (very clearly projecting the image of her younger brother onto him) — even going as far as to disobey her own grandfather in order to make sure Dickson remained safe, tailing him everywhere he went and began researching the people that he interacted with daily — until Dickson eventually caught her and asked her if she wanted to live with him. From that day forward, Enigma began to call Dickson "brother" via sign language and can always be found at his side within the shadows.

You know, I always headcanoned that once Niflheim got their hands on some photos of the prince and his civilian friend, they absolutely knew that Prompto was an escaped clone. The resemblance to Besithia was obvious, after all. They just didn't bother to do anything with it, since it's not like they need that particular clone and it's not even like Prompto has a sleeper programming.
But in the Spark verse, well. Prompto is a child of an Oracle. And if Glauca is a thing, they might even know about her magic.
Either way, they really want to have her back.
I have been sitting on this ask for awhile, because I love it, but unfortunately the muses are not cooperating with me on it.
In most of my fics, Niflheim doesn’t really bother paying too much attention to Prompto - yeah, he’s the prince’s friend, but he’s civilian, and furthermore, not a member of his Retinue, so ergo, he can’t be that important to the prince. Not enough to be worth investing any resources into whatever aim they might want with Prompto anyway.
But in Spark au, Prompto is claimed as Noctis’ Heart far earlier than normal in an effort to protect her secret, and that makes Niflheim take a closer look at this civilian girl who’s gotten so close to the prince. And you’re right, the resemblance is uncanny if you know what to look for.
I feel like Titus wouldn’t know about Prompto’s magic. Noctis and the others are so very careful to keep her magic under wraps, and the cover of Prompto having Noctis’ magic so compelling, that Titus never realizes the truth.
Now, if they ever managed to get their hands on the Prince’s Heart long enough to somehow learn that carefully hidden truth… well.
That would change things, wouldn’t it?

you know i'm usually the last person to have strong opinions on movie casting announcements but the idea of jacob elordi playing heathcliff stirs a fiery sense of indignation in my heart
#text post#i guess there was also timmy chalamet as dylan that's just downright stupid casting but honestly idc#i'm not gonna see that movie anyway i promise you#im kinda over dylan hype in the year of our lord 2024. let's pay tribute to other 60s acts ok#the 60s weren't just the beatles and bob dylan i promise#wheras wuthering heights certainly doesn't need another adaptation but i can't say i wouldn't watch one#like the story just is timeless and versatile. i think it just does hold up to retellings. it's one of those stories#i don't think i'll ever find one i like more than the 1939 one but that's ok#also it's been said nd this is a huge point so i may as well say it aloud even though i feel like we should all be on the same page already#seriously another white heathcliff in the year of our lord 2024?#i understand that the race of heathcliff is ambiguous but theres almost no room for arguing heathcliff is STRICTLY and CERTAINLY white#like it's not specified or stated in the text but it's just plain uncontroversial to ASSUME heathcliff is at least a biracial poc#his dark skin is referred to all over the place in the book. he's mistreated for it. cmon#it's just gotta have the popular hot white boy of the month#who frankly doesn't even look the part of heathcliff even if you WERE to whitewash the character as has been done many times#be so for real#i don't think margot robbie is super right for cathy bc she just kinda should be playing older roles at this point. all love for her#but like cathy is maybe in her early 20s at oldest. margot robbie doesn't look that young anymore and thats ok#i love her but it's just strange to picture cathy the immature coquette being mid-30s#she also does look noticeably older than elordi whereas they're supposed to be the same age#but i don't take issue w her playing cathy at like nearly the level of elordi as heathcliff#that makes me sick to my stomach honestly#and no i'm not like a hater of this actor for like moral reasons idfc about him but just. as heathcliff? no.#no no no no. never
