the 'new' woman at work (really just the newest) and him had been competing since she started working at the same company as him. they were in the same position and were both equally qualified for the same promotion that would be opening up at some point soon. thomas, personally, found her fascinating. they would get into verbal sparring matches in meetings and at company events where things were less professional, he thought they had great witty banter back and forth.

a new project for work had come up and he volunteered to work on it, only to find out that Zoey had as well. oddly happy about the chance for them to together, rather than against each other, he approached her desk, dropping the folder on top of her keyboard where she was typing, "excited to work together?"

The Unfortunate Pattern Of TV Shows Lying To Fans

Showrunner Dick Wolf is in hot water this week with fans of Law & Order: SVU on Twitter. Digging into the complaints, the current outcry isn’t really a surprise. Take a ship that’s been working on a slow burn for almost a quarter of a century, add in some bait-and-switch advertising, and you have a perfect storm.

While it’s true that showrunners have the right to run their shows how they see fit – and while fandom teasing is pretty much a staple of the medium – no fan appreciates being lied to. And there is very much a difference between teasing fans and lying to them.

Shippers of Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) have been hanging in through thick and thin for almost 25 years. Their dedication seemed like it was about to pay off, as promos for the most recent episode teased that this couple might finally – finally – kiss. Ultimately, not only did a kiss not happen but the shot featured in the promo – with Benson caressing Stabler’s face – was cut from the episode entirely.

Things happen in editing shows, and sometimes things get cut. So is this a case of “teasing fans” or lying to them? After almost a quarter of a century, it’s hard not to feel like this isn’t the latter.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist showrunner Austin Winsberg earned the fandom’s ire in the show’s second season when he promised the end of the dreaded love triangle. Only to very much keep the love triangle alive. Now, in this case, this was a case of the showrunner genuinely misunderstanding what “love triangles” mean in fandom spaces. He seems to have interpreted “fans hate love triangles” as “fans hate arcs in which a character can’t or won’t decide between two romantic prospects.”

Failing to realize that “making one choice and then later making another choice, and then later going back to the first choice” is, indeed, being unable to decide. Still, the promise of “no more love triangle” was followed pretty quickly by the return of the love triangle leaving fans feeling intentionally misled.

The case of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is a good argument for shows to have fandom consultants for showrunners who have probably not engaged in fandom spaces the way fans do and thus may mistake how things will be perceived. Winsberg professed the entire problem to have been a massive misunderstanding on his end. Perhaps that’s why fans of the series were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and successfully fought to save the show from premature cancellation.

Veronica Mars showrunner Rob Thomas got into similar trouble for handling the show’s last season. The Logan/Veronica ship (LoVe) had been a major focus of the series and subsequent movie. It was no wonder, then, that they were outraged when the fourth season ended with Logan’s death. Adding insult to injury, Rob Thomas explained the decision by basically saying that Veronica is “boring” when she’s happy in love and not traumatized and that he wanted to completely change the concept of the show moving forward.

Veronica Mars was a particularly special case of showrunners lying to the fan base because of the unusual nature of his salvation. Fans – a large number of them LoVe shippers – had directly been responsible for funding the Kickstarter that got the film sequel to the prematurely canceled series green-lit. Which led to the show’s subsequent pickup on Hulu. And Thomas knew how invested these fans – fans he directly called upon to resurrect his series – were heavily invested in LoVe. There was even an entire series of promos featuring Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring reading LoVe fanfiction leading up to the fourth season.

Teasing fans is a natural thing for shows to do. It keeps fans engaged. It creates buzz. But, as evidenced by Veronica Mars, when fans feel like teasing has become lying, they may not stick around to give the show another chance.

Gangplank 100% sympathizes with Zoey and her struggling/non-existent relationship with her own father, and even to an extent understands her pain

Despite knowing Zoey can 100% fend for herself in a verbal confrontation, Gangplank is almost always the first one to step in between her and the opposing side

Zoey won’t let anyone call her by her birth name if they only met or acquainted, only by her captain name of Sombra. Gangplank not only calls Zoey by her actual name, but also many more pet names

To the public eye, Gangplank and Zoey frequently raise their voices at one another for various reasons. In private, Gangplank’s voice becomes more gentle and uses his touch as his form of apology to her

He can’t help it, but Gangplank’s eyes and even expression soften every time he sets his gaze towards Zoey

When Gangplank’s anger starts to rise, the feeling of Zoey’s hand, whether it be her eldritch hand or her human one, on his own hand and bicep plus her calm gaze without speaking a word calms him down faster

When he first bared witness to Zoey transforming into her eldritch form, Zoey originally was anxious he would look away in fear or be unable to comprehend her true half form. That all washed away when he reached out to her for her skeletal face and began petting her, even placing his forehead against her with what she swore was a small grin

Their number one favorite way of telling each other “I love you” without actually telling each other “I love you”? Forehead touches

Gangplank knows he’s a huge guy in terms of body mass, muscle and height, but he’s always so gentle with Zoey in private, he was afraid he would hurt her while holding her hand

He still has not forgiven himself for not going back for her when he survived the events of Burning Tides and everything that had transpired during the Ruined King, continuing to make her believe he was truly dead

He will sometimes fake falling asleep so that she would follow suit and be sound asleep, allowing Gangplank to reopen his eyes and look down at her, both admiring her features and letting tears of regret fall from his eyes

“I love you…” Silence. “… and I’m. I’m so sorry, my love…”

Gangplank has lost plenty of people before, they’ve been nothing more than just another expendable crew member or business partner. But the thought of losing Zoey is something he cannot bear thinking about and has become quite protective of her

Any moment alone he can get alone with Zoey is a moment he cherishes, he doesn’t need any words to express his love for her and neither does she. Whether it may be sitting together looking out at the stars with her in is arms or even a kiss, it’s enough for him

Hearing Zoey cry is a sound Gangplank hates and will hold her in his arms for as long as she needs. It breaks his cold heart seeing her like this

He hadn’t told Zoey yet, but Gangplank is grateful she was able to keep the Jagged Hooks afloat along with her own crew/gang, the Chimera

“Lilybeth. Are you trying to get me scolded again?” You complained to her. Lilybeth was dragging you to the Garrison. “Ohh, forget them. Let’s just go have fun.” She said, holding onto your arm.

“Fun. They’re gonna talk my ear off. I’m supposed to be studying.” You said, sighing as you let her pull you along.

“Just blame it on me then.” Lilybeth replied, letting go of your arm. She pushed the doors of the pub and entered. You looked around before following her.

She sat down. “One whiskey please.” You reluctantly sat down beside her. A death wish is what she is looking for.

“Um, okay.” Grace moved around and poured her a drink. She placed the drink in front of Lilybeth. She looked over at Zoey. “None for me.” Zoey told her. Grace nodded.

Zoey looked around the pub. She tapped her fingers on the counter. Lilybeth sipped her whiskey. “Hmm…” Lilybeth glanced around the Garrison. “What now?” You knew she was bound to act mischievous. She was a rebellious woman and only needed a drink or two in her system before she made a fool out of herself.

“I didn’t say anything.” She giggled. She spotted a man that she liked. She got up from the chair. She fixed her hair and turned to you. “How do I look?” You looked at her. “As usual.” You replied, looking away. You sighed. Peace is not an option when she gets rowdy.

She smiled. “Gorgeous.” She bit her lip. “Watch and learn.” She walked off with her head held high. She swayed her hips with each step she took. Zoey shook her head. At least she’s having fun.

You turned around and made eye contact with Grace. She quickly looked down. “Grace. Can I get a drink?” She made her way over to you. “Same as usual.” You nodded. “Same as usual.” You mumbled, looking back at Lilybeth. She was chatting with the man she saw as eye candy.

“Dance. With what music?” You scoffed. As if she heard you, Lilybeth shouted to Grace. “Play some music! I wanna dance!” You took the drink from Grace.

She put on some music. Lilybeth along with the drunk men cheered. Twenty minutes went by, the music continued and Lilybeth dance with the man. The doors of the pub swung open. John, Thomas, and Arthur walked in. One after the other.

You different look their way. You just stared at Lilybeth who was being twirled. Thomas glanced at Lilybeth. His furrowed his eyebrows. “What she doing here?” John mumbled, glaring at her.

“I don’t know.” He glanced around and stopped to look at you. “As always, where Lilybeth goes, she is right beside her.” John looked at where his brother was staring. John nodded, he understood his brother’s frustration. Lilybeth wasn’t good company so why would you waste your time on her when he was waiting on any given moment to be called by you.

Thomas walked over to you. “Turn off the music.” He told Grace. He sat beside you. You pretended he wasn’t there. He glanced over at the glass. “You’re having fun.” John took a seat on your other side. You fidgeted with your sweater.

Silence filled the pub. Lilybeth whined. “Why’d you shut the music off!!” Her dancing partner looked around and quickly turned around when he made eye contact with Arthur who stared at him with untamed anger flowing in his eyes.

He abandoned Lilybeth and left the pub. “What?” Lilybeth said, staring at his back as he left. You sighed. Lilybeth is going to pick a fight with them.

Grace poured them drinks. He looked down at Zoey. “Why do you refuse to listen? Huh? Speak to me.”

“Shelby!” Lilybeth yelled, swaying as she walked up to Thomas. Your eyes went wide. Fuck. Thomas ignored her. He waited for you to look at him. “Coward. What you think you’re some king to order everyone around?”

You stood up and pulled her away. “Lilybeth.” You scolded. She had a point but it was not the place to do so.

“John, take Zoey with you. I’ll deal with this.” John stood up. “Lilybeth, let’s go.” You said, raising your voice. Lilybeth cover her mouth in an attempt to muffle her laughter. “Deal with me. As if, you have no right.”

Thomas rolled his eyes and said, “Do you?” Lilybeth cursed him. “You!”

Pulp x Hatchetfield Crossover

Because I had a Hatchetfield dream while listening to Pulp at work

Duke is John Herschel and Rose Stratford’s great great great great great grandchild. He’s in the direct line and has definitely heard the stories of his ancestors’ adventures, and that’s why he’s not that freaked out about Miss Holloway’s magic. Why would he be, John and Rose have experienced time travel themselves anyway. Also. Look at them.

And if I think about it, the world would’ve believed that Herschel died in 1835, he can’t exactly claim he never died when it turns out the gang was shot forward into the future. People would at least expect him to have aged if he never truly died. To me, that sounds like a situation that calls for a name change. Perhaps Keane?

Zach and Zoey Chambers are also descendants of John Herschel and Rose Stratford. Because it just makes sense that a couple played by Curt and Mariah should have descendants who are siblings played by Curt and Mariah.

Also I wanna draw parallels between Rose going “this is my life, but it isn’t my fate, to be stuck in a booth on the corner of Broadway selling periodicals” and Zoey wanting to leave Hatchetfield to go to Broadway because she believes in her own talent and skills.

As for the actual British Curt character, Jonathan Brisby, I wanna say he’s also a descendant, but from a more distant line. It’s kinda funny.

If Samuel and Margaret presumably get together, then I wanna say Xander’s their descendant. And I don’t care that Nick Lang said it’s not canon but I want Xander to have inherited his powers from Margaret.

Maybe the Traveler is also a Lady in White, perhaps a more primordial one than Webby, since she literally does wear white and gold and she has powers to produce life and manipulate time and space, as any Mother Goddess archetype does

Maybe Miss Holloway is related to the Traveler in the same way Margaret is related to her. It’s how she’s able to wield light magic and time travel as well. And something something about how Margaret appears to have forgotten her true origins, and how people forget Miss Holloway every 15 years as part of a deal

And while it’s confirmed that the Fosters’ lineage had the Gift through Willabella Muckwab,  who’s to say they’re not also from the lineage of whatever Margaret and the Traveler is.

Especially taking into account how similar Hannah’s powers are to Margaret’s, and the parallel of them having their powers unlocked shortly before white-clad goddesses appear to them,

And how both the Traveler and John McNamara appear to Margaret and Lex respectively, and tell them their full potentials can be unlocked through the love in their hearts. Oh and not only does the Traveler send people through time, she also sends them through space. And Lex has teleportation powers.

And maybe, to spite Chester Thomas, it's Benjamin Park who has a descendant who becomes President. And that's Howard Goodman.

Overall, Roselyn was adapted and used to living on her own by now. 

The demons in her past which had made her sister so concerned to leave her didn’t darken her doorway anymore. It helped massively that she had Lily for company and Zoey was always at the end of the phone (or in her bed) if she needed her.

She did think her girlfriend had a point though. She really did need to make some use of the artist studio in the high street that she had bought over a year ago and had never utilised, despite paying monthly fees for it.

The aching in her heart as he shouted those words only grew as the words were simply lost in her.

Zoey knew he was not the most perfect boyfriend, but damn her if she still saw him as someone who truly cared for the people around him. She would know that just by personal experience herself.

A metallic hand raised hesitantly, no words still spoken from her, as the tears welled in her eyes, clouding her vision the longer he stared at his huffing and crying form.

“Nothing!? Yeah! Th-That’s exactly what I thought! N—Nothing you could ever say can make me- *hhh*- make me believe someone- *hh* *hhh* -someone as good- a-and sweet as you are could ever love a fuck up like me!” Shane continued unable to control the tears and raw emotions coming from him.

It was killing her inside that he was saying all this— and yet there was not one ounce of alcohol in his breath. It was just one of the many ugly sides of depression he had been dealing with for so long.

“And ya know what!? I could give less of a shit- *hhh* -i-if you really do end up leavin’ me like any other rational person in my life! A metal hand cupped his face ever so tenderly, thumb brushing away heavy tears rolling down his face.

Zoey had him look her in the eye as she got him to calm down for only a moment before the words she wanted to say finally came out.

“… Chi mi thu, a ghràidh,” she whispered sweetly. “Chi mi sibh uile… An’ I would nae ‘ave wanted tha’, either way.”

Hearing his girlfriend speak Gaelic after realizing what she said just broke him.

She cared not for his past, not for his demons, but for him. She wanted him to get better. She knew what a shitty person he was, and yet here she was still by his side.

Because she truly did love him.

It broke him.

It broke him, and he didn’t want to let go of her now; even as he held her tightly bawling into her shoulder. Her words only made him regain that sense of comfort he had long forgotten, that calming effect that eventually grounded him once more.

There was hope for him; he needed to be the one to take charge of himself and be the better person for himself.

Zoey and Ghost being absolutely exhausted (and traumatized) from another mission that when they get home, they just do their best to care for the other in silence before she breaks down crying first

And Ghost holds her while crying silently himself and trying to calm her down

Ghost holding Zoey tighter: “I know, love… I know… I-I’m just as tired as you are. H-Hey, don’t cry…”

Zoey: “M’sorry…”

Oh, yeah, they be holding each other even in the shower scared one’s gonna go before falling asleep with each other

When I say that man will hold onto her, Simon will not let go. He has an iron grip on her; and he doesn’t care if she’s getting his chest wet from her tears

Zoey will flinch if Simon starts to raise his voice around her for whatever reason before he walks away to cool himself off. It’s one thing to yell at someone, it’s another to see his wife get frightened during a small fight and almost wanting to cry

Ghost knows Doe is more capable of being emotionally vulnerable around him, but he’s afraid to be the same with her, and he hates himself for it

But when he does have his most vulnerable moment, his crying is loud, choppy, and hiccups in between

He tries to not wake her up, but Zoey ofc gets woken up by him and it’s the first time she’s seeing her husband look at her with tears in his eyes, struggling to put the mask back on, and so… hurt

Ghost tries to look away but Doe takes his mask in her hand and gently puts it over his face then hug him

Simon 100% empathizes with Zoey in her relationship with her father and understands the trauma he, her father, put her through

Ghost will always be right behind Zoey whenever she gets visitation time with her father in prison; but the look Ghost gives the man, after everything Zoey told him, makes his blood boil the longer he looks at her father

“I don’t wanna fuckin’ hear it, old man. If, and whenever, you get out, and you dare to try and come near me, or my wife, I will fuckin’ kill you.”

Will ask her constantly if she’s okay, and result pending, will make sure she is in fact okay

Enter Simon seeing her look disgusted by it and hugging her from behind then rubbing the stump, humming to her and holding her against his body so she can feel the vibrations from his humming

Holding each other constantly because they fear losing each other in the battle field

Zoey’s the biggest source of his happiness and humanity he’s got and he cannot afford to lose her

Oh, and forehead touches

Forehead touches while they tell each other things will be okay in their softest voices, or even talk about their fears to each other

Zoey: “Yer still human, Si. Yer allowed to say what it is yer afraid of…”

Ghost: “I know…”

“What?” Davina scoffed, crossing her arms. “You know what you did.” Zoey shook her head. “I’m not a mind reader so unless you want to tell me.” Davina uncrossed her arms. She remained silent. You looked over to Thomas who rolled his eyes. You shrugged your shoulders and looked away.

“I truly don’t know what you want from me.” Davina balled up her fists. “That. That’s the problem. Your attitude.”

You inhaled and exhaled. It was an exercise that helped you contain your anger. You glanced over at the clock. “I’d appreciate it if you hurry up and skip to the reason why you called for me.”

“You were seen in London with your little friend Lilybeth. Specifically, in a club known to serve one of our enemies.” You scratch the back of your neck. “Our enemies. I see. Lilybeth needed me there so I went. I won’t go there again. There. Problem solve.”

Davina’s eyes went wide. Your dismissal tone upset her. You knew without looking at her that she was enraged. You moved to exit Thomas office. His sole purpose in being present was to be mediator between the two of you. Davina could be harsh and since you were young, they knew how far her temper would get especially with you.

“What friend?” Thomas asked, he was no longer amused. Your hand gripped the knob. “Lilybeth’s friend.” You replied, not wanting to give more details. You closed your eyes. I should’ve just said friend.

He hummed. “Davina. It seems like it’s settled. This is Lilybeth fault then. You can go now.” You twisted the knob. You wanted to leave. You had no business being in the shop. “It’s not her fault. I’m an adult and I know right from wrong. She didn’t know any better and me being me, I forgot to check the club name before entering.” You said with your back facing him. With that said, you attempted to exit his office once again.

Thomas eyes narrowed. She seems protective of Lilybeth. It seems like Lilybeth can’t even hurt a fly.

“Zoey, you stay. I’m not done talking with you.” You cursed under your breath. Why me? Lilybeth, you’ll hear from me. I told her this fun trip would come around and bite me in the face.

Your sister patted you in the back before leaving. You lifted your hand to smack her on the arm. “Zoey, take a seat.” You let her hand fall. Bitch.

You took a seat. “What is it?” You asked, your leg moving up and down. “This friend.” He poured himself a glass of whiskey. “What does he do?” You furrowed your eyebrows. “I don’t know. I barely know the fella. I just met him. And Lilybeth was with him, not me.”

He took in what you said. “Then who were you with.” You tilted your head. “Waiting on them.” You sighed, leaning back into the chair. You should’ve known. Someone must I’ve saw you wondering the streets at night. That shadow wasn’t something you imagined.

“What have I told you about walking at night?” Thomas angrily asked, taking a seat. “I’m not supposed to.”

“Exactly. So why the fuck did I receive at call about my Zoey wandering around in London?” He said, his eyes piecing into you.

“I can defend myself but I know that won’t lessen your anger.” Zoey told him. “Your safety comes first.” He said in a gentle tone.

You nodded. If I continue, he won’t shut up. “Got it. As I told my sister, it won’t happen again.”

“Good.” Thomas said, standing up. “If there’s any trouble, you come to me.” Thomas said, after taking a sip of his whiskey.

“I can handle trouble. You and everyone knows that.” Thomas nodded. “Nevertheless, you don’t have to. I can do it.”

“I know. I’ll listen. You won’t hear anything from me.” You smiled at him.

“Alright, you can go.” You stood up and dusted off your sweater.

Zoey left his office. With one goal in her mind, she nodded to herself. I need to leave before I lose my mind. I can’t stand their invasion of privacy. I know he’ll look into Lilybeth. I can’t have a normal life without him and not to mention John interfering.

Thomas rubbed his forehead. “Fucking Hell. She’s changing Zoey.” He sat back down in his chair. “I’ve left her choose her friend despite the risks. I underestimated her. She seems keen to take Zoey into dangerous territory and I don’t like that one bit.”
