when you love characters so much you try to climb inside them to become them. you pick up their strange personality quirks and their lopsided smirks and you try and fail to knit the sweater they wear most often and to play the piano piece that they comfort themselves with. you twirl the piece of hair at the base of your neck and use antiquated turns of phrases and teach yourself how to waltz in the darkness of your bedroom. you swirl an imaginary cape and sprawl bonelessly and draw their tattoos over your arms. and one day you look at yourself and you are an amalgamation of of the fictional people you love. they live through you, and will always be with you, and in that way, they are real.

Terminology Thursday: Juggernaut Ship

It’s time for sailing cause this Terminology Thursday, we’re looking at Juggernaut Ship, a term used for an extremely popular pairing within a fandom.

Although opinions may vary on what can be considered a juggernaut ship, it is typically understood as a pairing that completely overwhelms all others from the same fandom in the amount of fanworks produced.

The predominance of a juggernaut ship can potentially spark ship wars or wank in a fandom as it makes fans of other pairings feel left out. A direct contrast to the juggernaut ship is the rarepair.

There needs to be studies done on the weaponization of popular male characters against their predominantly female fanbases by the male writers who created them. As a female fan of popular media, this is one of the most frustrating things to bear witness too, and the amount of times I've lost some of my favorite male characters to this very pattern is astounding. Is it misogyny? Jealousy? A combination of the two? Or is there more going on here? I desperately want to know, because why the fuck would you take your most popular, interesting, and beloved characters and destroy/kill them off in the least satisfying way possible? The level of contempt one must have for their own characters to actively harm the narrative they've been building simply to punish the audience for having the audacity to like a character when they don't is insane to me.

Trivia: Duncan and Weevil were supposed to be the rivals for Veronica’s affection/love interests. It was the handsome rich boy vs the poor bad boy biker. But UPN at the time had some objections regarding interracial couple for their main character. There was an interview about how the network (UPN) was afraid of interracial relationship from the main character (Veronica) would put off the advertisers - so they shifted the interracial relationship instead with Wallace/Jane, Keith/Alicia, and Carmen/Tad. When the show moved to CW, there was no interracial relationship whatsoever.

Veronica Mars is the worst example of a revival/reboot done wrong. If only the new series was handled by a new showrunner and writer (who understand the characters and the emotional connection of the fans), the show wouldn’t bomb. Rob Thomas thought by dressing up the show with nudity, sex, alcohol, drugs, curses, technology, now music, and big celebrity actors without actually having good characters and plots it would make the show seemed edgy and modern. And then he had the gall to feel confused when the fandom rejected the show.
