anne rice, pseudointellectual extraordinaire, managed to squeeze into the tale of the body thief references to: "sailing to byzantium" and "the dolls" by william butler yeats, a tale of two cities, anna karenina, the postman always rings twice, lolita, "the tyger" by william blake, a tree grows in brooklyn, "the thing on the doorstep" by h.p. lovecraft, "eyes of the mummy" by robert bloch, goethe's faust, jeffrey burton russell, mircea eliade, john milton, marcus aurelius, hart crane, george bernard shaw, diogenes, thomas aquinas, jacques maritain, pierre teilhard de chardin, dostoyevsky, albert camus, and john keats. at one point lestat uses the alias "sebastian melmoth," which was a pseudonym used by oscar wilde, itself a reference to melmoth the wanderer by charles maturin. later lestat goes by the last name "wilde." he also references othello and at one point asserts that he is "not time's fool." the alias "sheridan blackwood" might be a reference to sheridan dufferin given rice's interest in art, and i assume she got "alexander stoker" from bram. the movies that appear or are referenced are suspicion (1941), vice versa (1988), all of me (1984), the company of wolves (1984), beauty and the beast (1946), the dead (1987), it's a wonderful life (1946), and body and soul (1947). characters see or reference art by rembrandt (specifically the syndics of the draper's guild), picasso (three separate times), willem de kooning, jasper johns, andy warhol, monet, and edward hopper. there's also a reference to the actor rutger hauer. uhhh i think that's it but holler if you caught one i didn't

Arthur Kaufmann began his triptych "Arts and Science Finding Refuge in the USA" in 1939. After several decades' interruption, he finished it in 1964. Ironically, the painting now hangs in the Städtisches Museum Mülheim an der Ruhr, in Germany.

L’eredità del nostro tempo

La meditazione sulla storia e la tradizione che Hannah Arendt pubblica nel 1954 porta il titolo, certo non casuale, Tra passato e futuro. Si trattava, per la filosofa ebreo-tedesca da un quindicennio rifugiata a New York, di interrogarsi sul vuoto tra passato e futuro che si era prodotto nella cultura dell’Occidente, cioè sulla rottura ormai irrevocabile della continuità di ogni tradizione. È per questo che la prefazione al libro si apre con l’aforisma di René Char Notre héritage n’est précédé d’aucun testament. In questione era, cioè, il problema storico cruciale della ricezione di un’eredità che non è più in alcun modo possibile trasmettere.

Circa venti anni prima, Ernst Bloch in esilio a Zurigo aveva pubblicato col titolo L’eredità del nostro tempo una riflessione sull’eredità che egli cercava di recuperare frugando nei sotterranei e nei depositi nella cultura borghese ormai in disfacimento («l’epoca è in putrefazione e al tempo stesso ha le doglie» è l’insegna che apre la prefazione al libro). È possibile che il problema di un’eredità inaccessibile o praticabile solo per vie scabrose e spiragli seminascosti che i due autori, ciascuno a suo modo, sollevano non sia per nulla obsoleto e ci riguardi, anzi, da vicino – così intimamente che a volte sembriamo dimenticarcene. Anche noi facciamo esperienza di un vuoto e di una rottura fra passato e futuro, anche noi in una cultura in agonia dobbiamo cercare se non una doglia del parto, almeno qualcosa come una parcella di bene sopravvissuta allo sfacelo.

Un’indagine preliminare su questo concetto squisitamente giuridico – l’eredità – che, come spesso avviene nella nostra cultura, si espande al di là dei suoi limiti disciplinari fino a coinvolgere il destino stesso dell’Occidente, non sarà pertanto inutile. Come gli studi di un grande storico del diritto – Yan Thomas – mostrano con chiarezza, la funzione dell’eredità è quella di assicurare la continuatio dominii, cioè la continuità della proprietà dei beni che passano dal morto al vivo. Tutti i dispositivi che il diritto escogita per sopperire al vuoto che rischia di prodursi alla morte del proprietario non hanno altro scopo che garantire senza interruzioni la successione nella proprietà.

Eredità non è forse allora il termine adatto per pensare il problema che tanto Arendt che Bloch avevano in mente. Dal momento che nella tradizione spirituale di un popolo qualcosa come una proprietà non ha semplicemente senso, in questo ambito un’eredità come continuatio dominii non esiste né può in alcun modo interessarci. Accedere al passato, conversare coi morti è anzi possibile solo spezzando la continuità della proprietà ed è nell’intervallo fra passato e futuro che ogni singolo deve necessariamente situarsi. Non siamo eredi di nulla e da nessuna parte abbiamo eredi ed è solo a questo patto che possiamo riallacciare la conversazione col passato e coi morti. Il bene è, infatti, per definizione adespota e inappropriabile e l’ostinato tentativo di accaparrarsi la proprietà della tradizione definisce il potere che rifiutiamo in ogni ambito, nella politica come nella poesia, nella filosofia come nella religione, nelle scuole come nei templi e nei tribunali.

Monday, October 30: Zar, "The Devil Called My Name"

Europe glommed on hair metal right as everyone else had had enough, so groups like German’s Zar felt out of time and very out of place with where the genre was going in the early ‘90s.  And although there would be something of a melodic rock renaissance in the back of the decade, or at least a handful of groups trying to bring one about, tunes like “The Devil Called My Name”, by spliting the difference between melodic AOR and power metal, just felt awkward.  Speaking of awkward, the leather-lunged cheesy vocals from Thomas Bloch gave Zar a bushleague feel to match the cheapo cover art, so say nothing of the totally unnecessary keyboards.   But the riffing, while rather simple, was effective and brought some life to the proceedings, though not enough to make Zar seem any less ridiculous.

The Not-Yet-Conscious and the Political Power of Daydreaming (VIDEO ESSAY)

An introduction to the concept of the Not-Yet-Conscious by Ernst Bloch and how he understands the idea to have emerged in history. Drawing from several case studies of revolutionary moments such as the French Revolution, Thomas Müntzer and the Peasants' War, the Haitian slave revolt, to the Sparticist Uprising in 1919,  we examine how these events tap into the Not-Yet-Conscious. We also discuss how daydreaming is related to the Not-Yet-Conscious by looking at the lesser-known psychoanalyst Hans Sachs and his theory of the daydream.

This is how I was taught in regards to fiction novels, growing up. More specifically I was taught that even though fictional stories are imaginary they are rooted in reality because they are often (but not always) inspired by the author's own lived experiences. Or by the experiences of someone close to them -- IE Ellen Hopkins's Crank series was inspired by her daughter who was a drug addict and teen parent in real life. Or by the experiences of a famous person -- IE the serial killer Ed Gein who served as the inspiration for Norman Bates in the novel Psycho by Robert Bloch as Buffalo Bill in The Silence Of The Lambs by Thomas Harris, and Leatherface in the 1974 horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

That's why I always roll my eyes when people say you can't learn anything from reading fiction. The titles I listed can easily be seen as psychological profiles of murderers and addicts or commentaries on generational trauma. And writing horror or tragedies is often cathartic and used as a way to process trauma. I know because I've done it myself when I used to write fanfictions. It works the same way talk therapy does -- you're just venting with less judgement.

Why should people have to justify what they read to you anyway, though? Simply because people are paranoid and like to assume the worst about everyone. For fuck's sakes, they're the ones who need help -- not the authors. Authors and artists are too busy devoting themselves to their crafts -- researching, practicing, studying, writing and rewriting -- to murder anyone whereas you're just jumping to conclusions because you have too much free time and no creative outlet for your anxieties. Fuck, so many problems could be solved if people took up art therapy or therapy in general. Write out your problems or paint them out or crochet them or whatever. Do anything other than spreading heinous rumors about people.
