Thoughts on Surface Pressure 1/2

Sorry but I gotta go off about Luisa again, I have watched this song eight million times and I can’t keep it in anymore

Let’s start with “the magic’s fine, Luisa’s fine”

Luisa set all these wandering donkeys down in a straight line, she sets Mirabel right in the center of that line, and dusts her off to make the tableau perfect. Abuela’s expectations weigh on them all, but Luisa has really internalized this need for perfection in the same way Alma has: it’s all about appearances. The most important thing is to make everything seem the way it should, including herself. If things look fine, things are fine.

And she tries so hard! She strikes her hero pose! But her body’s betraying her with little signs of stress, the first tiny crack in her facade.

She even has these little tired-looking lines under her eyes, she’s working on no sleep, sweetheart you’re 19 please take a nap T^T But she’s the strong one, she’s not nervous, she’s trying to reinforce to Mirabel exactly what she thinks is expected of her, because she thinks that’s all she’s allowed to be.

How does she prove she’s fine, even as the cracks are showing? Work.

Who knows how these boulders got here, but they’re in the way, crowding the path. In the middle of rounding up donkeys and trying to placate her sister, she’s found a problem--so she’s cleaning it up. We’re still in the “real” world here, this is genuinely the kind of thing she does every minute of every day.

Also, I think because of the pose she strikes, the first hundred times I watched this video I thought the boulder broke over her shoulders, but no, it literally cracks apart on her head. I know there are obvious comparisons to be made with Luisa and the donkeys as beasts of burden, but also she’s hardheaded here, literally and figuratively stubborn as a mule in resisting Mirabel’s questions.

I’m here for those tense back muscles tho ngl

Also I’m super interested in how surprising all this is to Mirabel!

I think the implication is that Luisa has never shown her this before; maybe she’s been annoyed with her little sister or been cranky sometimes, but Mirabel doesn’t know what to make of the anger and aggression that’s bubbling up here. This is new territory with sweet, agreeable Luisa. Mirabel’s never had any reason to be wary of her, she got right up in her face at breakfast and got in her way just before this song started because in spite of her power Luisa is safe, and this reaction is catching Mira off guard.

I can’t talk about this song without screenshotting this moment, LOOK AT HER

"And I glow ‘cause I know what my worth is” sounds like a mantra because it is. Luisa thinks she knows what her worth is, but it’s so tied to her gift and her ability to perform that it’s incredibly fragile. She’s convincing herself. Glowing implies everything bright and good and powerful that she wants to be, but it’s a little dissonant with the energy she’s radiating here. She’s trying to brute force them both into believing all is as it should be, and the strain shows in her face, in the extremely gorgeous way her heavy breaths are included in the visual and in the audio track. 

Now, supported for at least another second or two by this pep talk to herself, she’s back to work clearing these gd rocks:

She’s trying to get into the right headspace: this is easy, it’s a dance, she can do it no hands and look damn good too, but the lyrics break my heart: “I don’t ask how hard the work is, got a rough indestructible surface.” Luisa does WHATEVER IS ASKED. She doesn’t consider whether it’s too much for her, or whether it’s something so easy someone else could do instead. And even though she’s got this beautiful, classically femme look, she describes herself as rough. Literally indestructible. I can’t help but think that she feels, viscerally, how different she is from every other woman she knows in this tiny town, even though in the real world women come in every shape and size, including hers. In her mind, looking the way she does is a part of her gift, and her gift is what makes her valuable, and she’s (mostly) proud of that.

But in spite of her best efforts, she can’t actually hold it together anymore, especially with Mirabel right there to witness her start to crumble.

“I take what I’m handed, I break what’s demanded,” but look how upset she is about it!!! LMM tweeted some early lyrics to this song a while back and iirc this line used to be “I take what I’m handed, I’m taken for granted.” INCREDIBLE to me that the sentiment is still there, it’s just in the subtext of her expression. She’s stating what she does, what she’s supposed to do, but with Mirabel there watching and reacting, Luisa’s finally starting to let herself feel how it’s hurting her. She is taken for granted, and she can’t keep pretending anymore.

“BUT!”

I’m OBSESSED with this transition into the song space. Luisa’s frustration has  torn up the surface of reality and brought us into pure metaphor--something Mirabel is EXCELLENT at perceiving. The themes of perception and perspective go deep in this movie, and this song is a really clear illustration of the way Mirabel is able to viscerally understand the emotional realities of her family. To Mirabel, what Luisa later describes as “a little talk” is an entire fantasy of the internal chaos Luisa’s been hiding. Every visual from this point on is a metaphor, but the real emotions are all over their faces and that’s what carries the audience through the transition.

“UM OMG”

“Luisa what’s happening??”

“Confession time sis I FEEL BERSERK--”

“--as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus.” The spotlight on her! The faceless audience, just silhouettes in the dark! Tbh this shot brings me back to Dumbo, and being a tiny kid terrified by the scene where faceless men and elephants are laboring to pitch the circus tent in a rainstorm. That scene is about unseen and thankless work, and is also deeply racist, but I feel like there’s a line to be drawn from the danger there to the danger here, even though Luisa’s most backbreaking work is performance. This metaphor space is filled with references, including to the Disney back catalog.

Even the donkeys have gained a metaphor layer:

In the “reality” space, they were just vibing, wandering around bare-backed, chewing grass. Here they have blanket pads strapped on, ready to be loaded with whatever they’re asked to carry, just as Luisa always has to be ready.

Mirabel is literally launched into the air by the force of the dangers here, and the chaos is only just beginning.

This all seems terrifying and unpredictable to Mirabel, but for Luisa this is everyday life. She’s ready, a step ahead, already taking in the next crisis as Mirabel is clinging onto her.

And as Hercules (the most obvious Disney self-reference, even though the designs are different) is making a break for it, Luisa is already (so gently!) setting Mirabel down...

...and accepting the tools of the hero trade. She has to be prepared to do what no one else can. She’s asking “Was Hercules ever like ‘Yo I don’t wanna fight Cerberus?’” because a mythological demigod is the closest thing she has to a peer--and nobody’s ever asked her if she wants to fight Cerberus, if she wants to move a chapel, if she wants to reroute the river again (because didn’t she just move that bridge yesterday??). Nobody can do what she does, so she has no way of knowing if it’s okay to be tired, or scared, or frustrated, or reluctant.

And now Mirabel is inside this struggle with her, so even as she’s expressing the source of her pain--“I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service” (OUCH)--she has to keep going.

It's so rough that for a lot of this song sequence, this is what Mirabel sees:

The next crisis, and Luisa putting her body between Mirabel and danger.

And she wins! Victory! Right?

Wrong.

“A flaw or a crack, the straw in the stack that breaks the camel’s back, what breaks the camel’s back?” Solving one crisis just leads to another; the ground is never steady under her feet, her emotional landscape is always fracturing.

But she doesn’t actually fall! She chooses to dive headfirst into whatever is coming next, because that’s how she keeps her balance, she keeps going, going, going.

And when the spotlight brightens...

We get the hero poses again. No problems here! Luisa’s fine! But in the audio we get the truth she’s trying to cover, sung quiet and breathless: “Pressure like a drip-drip-drip that’ll never stop.” Resigned.

“Pressure that’ll tip-tip-tip” is taking its toll, though:

Luisa herself has become a scale--still trying to balance everything, but also bringing to mind a lot of layers of visual reference to Egyptian mythology (Anubis weighing hearts against the weight of a feather to judge their fate in the afterlife), Greek mythology again (Themis, goddess of divine law and order, frequently symbolized by scales of justice), and Christianity (the Archangel Michael frequently shows up in art weighing souls on Judgement Day). 

Once again Luisa’s peers are gods, but she finds herself struggling. The donkeys are funny and fit the theme, but they’re also representing all her responsibilities piling up, and I’m IN LOVE with how many of them it takes to match the weight of Mirabel. 

Luisa’s sister, and by extension her family, is SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT--but eventually she just can’t keep the balance anymore, and she pops.

Whew. OK. I’m upset about this poor kid’s internal landscape, but let’s keep going.

Another hero landing!

I know everything is emotionally kind of terrible here but this brief scene makes me laugh. Mirabel is floundering, the donkeys are watching Luisa with anxious expressions but the one on the right does a little stompy dance while Luisa’s dancing, and Luisa’s A GREAT DANCER. Also I love/hate the pattern of barbell-lifting Luisas in the background, the inside of her mind is wallpapered with imagery of her doing her job and being strong. (Also I think the triangular patterns match the lace on the waist of her chemise/top?? The DETAILS)

Mirabel’s worried, this donkey is worried, Luisa is worried but she’s STILL PERFORMING.

“Give it to your sister, your sister’s older”

Luisa throws this wink around. She winks at Mirabel and at a random townsperson in “The Family Madrigal,” and she’s using it here as a cover--look, things are wild but I’m on it! And for a second Mirabel is fooled, because this is the sister she knows.

But Luisa once again is already sizing up the next crisis, and she doesn’t actually have time to treat Mirabel as gently as before.

She’s still protecting her, because that’s the most important thing, but she’s only got two hands (and hips that don’t lie). 

Also, can I talk for a second about the phrasing of “Give her all the heavy things we can’t shoulder”? In the previous line, Luisa could be talking directly to Mirabel. She points at herself, it’s sensible that she’s giving an instruction, give it to your sister, this girl right here with the muscles and the thumbs. But the “we” in the second part of the phrase turns the whole thing on its head. She’s not telling Mirabel to give her this weight. She’s quoting everyone else in her life telling Mirabel to give her this weight.

And then we get another stunning bit of vulnerability, another look between the two of them that’s laying bare what this is doing to Luisa: 

“Who am I if I can’t run with the ball?” A nice, friendly sports metaphor, how bad could that be?

Sorry, excuse me, the ball is THE ENTIRE WORLD, with South America front and center. Luisa is placing herself at the same level of responsibility as Atlas, literally holding up the globe. What’s interesting to me is that for Atlas, it’s a punishment, and he’s usually depicted as struggling under the weight. But holding up the globe isn’t actually that hard for Luisa, she’s got it one-handed. The pain point for her is the fear of failure: “If I fall”

And even here, she’s not falling because she stumbled, she’s falling because the ground under her feet is tipping sideways, the foundation of the magic, her family, her understanding of herself is all suddenly unstable.

I love how every transition is some kind of dramatic movement, Luisa and Mirabel are always dropping from the sky into a new danger.

Her face is killing me. Another peril, stuck in a giant coffee pulper like she’s in a Golden Age superhero comic. But again the peril isn’t the problem, it’s the emotional pain she’s in, the grip-grip-grip that won’t let go.

AND SHE’S STILL GOING. Carrying Mirabel around like a sack of potatoes now:

Because the gorgeous visual metaphors that are these geysers just keep popping off! Girl’s a ticking time bomb, and she’s using that built up pressure to get her from one problem to the next.

Here she comes to save the day, but Mirabel is really grasping the severity of what’s happening now. She’s starting to recognize that her familiar strong and unflappable sister is an act.

Now we get Luisa quoting again. “Give it to your sister, your sister’s stronger, see if she can hang on a little longer.”

Go listen to this bit really closely, the strain in her voice is so palpable, just like the strain in her posture here. She’s hurt, and this line is accusatory and a little sarcastic--she’s always emotionally dangling from this cliff, and nobody sees it, they just keep piling on bit by bit, and expect her to keep her grasp. In a lot of ways she’s put herself in this position, reading more severity into what the adults in her life expect of her than they probably intend, but also nobody is checking on her.

AND SHE STILL DOESN’T LOSE HER GRIP. She’s holding on, it’s the CLIFF that cracks. She asks “Who am I if I can’t carry it all, if I falter?” but she hasn’t faltered once in this song so far, it’s everything she’s trying to hold on to, trying to rely on, that’s failing her.

THAT’S SOME POTENT ANXIETY.

The Mandalorian Chapter 15 rewatch thoughts

- mayfeld does hear when the droid talks to him the first time, you can see him pretending not to like he hopes he’ll just go away haha. I also guess he’s had a lot of time to think, picking apart pieces of the large fascist machine he used to be a part of and going over everything he clearly regrets 

- hahaha fennec and boba are in the back intensely keeping watch the entire time they’re on the prison planet. I suppose a good two thirds of this crew is uuuuh extremely wanted by the new republic lol

- the thing din’s voice does at the end when he says “but you still know your imperial clearances and protocols. don’t you.” is beyond fucking words, it sends a chill right through me

- 

1) din fiddling with that panel; I think he’s phenomenally nervous behind the helmet here, that’s the sort of keeping his hands busy he does when he’s anxious and 2) why the hell does boba have this many chairs instead of like space for cargo haha does he throw bounty hunter parties in here or what

- ngl boba correctly guessing at a glance what sort of ore they’re mining and informing everyone in his sardonic deadpan voice is Big Sexy  

I love how he and fennec are standing together when they’re both present in these opening scenes too, first at the very back when they’re keeping a lookout: 

and then in the foreground while they discuss the scan 

it’s a nice subtle way to get across that they already have a dynamic, they’re somewhat used to working together as a unit at this point. (she’s also looking over at him when she asks what they might be mining in there, like she’s mostly asking his opinion instead of opening it to the floor. they’re talking the mission out between them before din enters the conversation)

- ah the distinct implication that mayfeld is needling din about this because he’s actually feeling super uncomfortable being back in empire gear and he needs to transfer that discomfort over onto someone else so he won’t have to feel through it... very psychologically understandable and such a fucking piece of shit asshole character trait to give in to haha

- din’s level of side eye is so epic you can see it straight through the helmet fhaskjfhd

- neat detail: din’s head turns slightly toward mayfeld when he calls mandalorians a ‘race’. (it’s sort of cool  that we as the audience know why that bothers him, but mayfeld probably didn’t even pick up on it). also shows that mayfeld doesn’t actually quite understand what he’s talking about, even when he makes decent points he’s caught up in his own myopic nihilistic point of view. ‘we’re all the same’ ------> ‘everyone’s secretly as shitty as me deep down’. (which also betrays a lot of self loathing, since we see later he does have the capacity to NOT be that shitty when he chooses to. rick famuyiwa manages to get a LOT of really interesting nuanced stuff into this character in two short episodes, that’s super impressive)   

the bright sunny look on mayfeld’s face when din finally gives in and takes the bait tho fsajdkfhasj he’s awful but that’s very funny

- rip all these excellent dudes who really only wanted to accomplish the noble goal of ruining the empire’s entire day and didn’t know they were also trying to blow up My Dad Who Does Not Deserve Any Of This, it’s honestly just really sad that there’s no moment to talk that out

well at least they blew up the entire refinery on their way out, I’m sure that’s the way they would have wanted their memories honored lol

- the comedy beat of din running out of ammo for the first time ever and the music briefly cutting out for it is so so good for me 

hahahaha din seems to actually take a moment to be a little aghast at that dude who ends up crushed under the treads of the tank thing, he’s just sort of staring for a few seconds too long and that’s how pirate nr 2 takes him by surprise and shatters his shoulder armour 

- I feel a bit bad -- two of the ‘pirates’ try to hold on to each other for balance and then din punches them apart and off the tank :( I mean it’s not like he could just let them murderate him either but like. ouch I’m guessing this one might haunt him for a while for several reasons huh

(the sequence is actually this guy, let’s call him pirate 3, swings the spear at din and misses, instead hitting his buddy who’s trying to get to his feet, then looks horrified and grabs for him to make sure he doesn’t fall off, and then... mando’s forehead happens to them haha)

- poor fennec and cara just running up that hill while everything’s on fire, they must be wondering what the FUCK is going on (at least cara knows that things blowing up is a sure sign din djarin is in the middle there somewhere)

- everything about carano in real life aside for one second -- I do like that we get this contrast in build between our main female characters of the episode and the way their costume designs enhance it

 - awwww the little gesture din does with his hand after he removes it from mayfeld’s chest after stopping him from leaving, it’s just so... sweet. it’s a little bit appeal, a little bit reassurance, it just lightens/softens the tone of what he says a bit (he has quite a lot of like... not conciliatory mannerisms exactly, but small touches here and there that are there to communicate that he’s not angry/aggressive or trying to be a dick about it even when he’s emphatic. I keep wondering how much that is just him being him and how much is him being practiced at settling other people’s hot tempers)  

- this shot is just... genius

it’s din seen entirely from the outside, with nothing of what we’ve learned to recognize as him for almost two seasons now in view -- not even his face, which we have at least a tenuous fledgling attachment to from before. it’s like we get introduced to him almost as if anew again and again in this episode, just like he’s getting introduced to new aspects of himself and what he’s willing to do and having to struggle to find ways to have that fit with who he is. his discomfort and stress is our discomfort and stress. it’s so interesting 

- I can’t stop cackling at this moment even in all the tension -- you only get a sliver of din’s profile but you can feel the sheer MURDER radiating off him sdhfasjk

- aaaaaaaagh the way you get a whole different view of din’s habitual impassiveness when you can actually see his face... the way he keeps appealing to mayfeld ‘just don’t make more trouble, just shut up’, the way he goes completely silent and watchful and frozen..... those are all really obvious trauma responses, and it leads you to wonder how often he touches into that even when he’s in his element, when he’s got the full armour on. hmngh my heart  

- ‘the believer’ is such a galaxy brain title for this episode, because it could be referring to either of the three men around this table or all of them at once. (and crucially the only person whose beliefs aren’t in a living, breathing state of adapting to the world around them is the empire officer, with his horrific inhuman ideology. mayfeld thinks he believes in nothing, and proves himself explosively wrong by the end of the episode, and it’s redeeming for him in some capacity. din is facing a more internal dilemma of different parts of his (and his culture’s) beliefs/values clashing and having to decide which one’s more important, to his identity and to how to exist in the world as a person (and love for the baby wins out supremely in the end. of course it does Y_____Y). the empire dude only sees the same sterile fascist world at the end of his shit rainbow that he’s clearly always done, even when faced with proof that it’s untenable. (I mean he wouldn’t give a fuck that it’s immoral because he’s y’know evil, but he’s not even fazed by the fact that the empire provably FAILED, and failed so quickly) his belief is a dead and deadening thing to contrast the others. man when this show goes off with the themes it goes OFF haha) 

- love the triumphant heroic mando music kicking in as we’re finally getting to pick off imps, love that for us 

- din’s protective instincts at work again, he helps mayfeld to his feet and makes sure he’s safely on board before going further in himself ;_______;

i think it would ultimately bc namatame who created these clones, like he got some divine message about society being impure and having to replace the people in it with new ones to save them

February 14th was always a day you dreaded; The idea and concept of a whole fucking holiday being dedicated to just love.. really put a bitter taste in your mouth. In your opinion, it was just a reason for couples to show a disgusting amount of PDA and get away with it.

However; due to a incredibly corny and cliché situation you found yourself in; you now were seeing the incoming holiday in a different light. When you thought of the holiday.. You first thought of Michael. Michael Langdon.

Meeting Michael at all was a complete accident - You met months ago in fall; on a dark cloudy night. Every detail from that evening was etched and woven into your mind as if it had just happened yesterday; and you could only hope that it would remain that way forever. After all; that was the night when you had met your favorite person. You even remembered the weather.. The bitterness of the cold wind making it seem as if it was seconds from storming.

You were part of a small coven which was meeting due to a full moon, it was a rather mundane and basic ritual you were preforming. One of which you had preformed more times you could even count on your fingers.. However; what made that ritual special is that your coven happened to be recruiting.

Full black outfits, including thin, long cloaks is what everyone wore to the occasion.. After everything was over and done with; you went to leave - the bitter coldness of the night urging you to leave rather quickly.

However; something.. almost a invisible force made you stop walking away from the crowd and made you physically stop. You slowly stopped walking; and turned around. You sharply gasped when you saw a figure directly in front of you - wearing a dark ensemble that matched yours nearly identically.

Immediately you grew weary. A sharp, nauseated feeling started to manifest inside of you.

"Were you following me"? You spoke with your voice raised, your hands which previously fell loosely at your side were starting to curl into fists.

You could feel yourself getting defensive. You quickly flicked your eyes over at the other coven members - making sure you weren't causing a scene; not wanting to draw attention to the situation until it grew necessary.

"Yes, but.. look. I just wanted to talk to you.. away from the others". The boy stated.

You bit your lip to suppress a groan. You rolled your eyes, not really caring that he could see how bothered you were.

"Fine. But c'mon, make it quick". You said, not trying to hide the irritation in your voice.

You turned around and walked a few feet away from the crowd, not looking back but merely expecting him to follow you. You were expecting he was just another newbie with dumb questions, or needed clarification on something.

You turned to talk to him, and that's when you noticed something you about him you seemed to overlook earlier - his beauty. You were completely taken aback and breath taken. Light blue eyes met your gaze as you stared blankly at him; momentarily stunned. He looked beyond ethereal; his pale cheeks flushed a light pink from the cold and his blonde hair looked as if it could be spun from gold. It was almost like he could sense how you were suddenly taken aback.. A smug smirk played on his lips; if you didn't know any better you would say he almost seemed cocky.

"There's something about you that's different from the others. I could sense it". He stated.

"How"? You stuttered.

You watched as he took a couple steps toward you and in one quick swoop, pushed the hood of his cloak fully back. He got even closer but you didn't dare move. You watched him curiously as he turned to the side, pushing his blonde locks of hair out of the way to show you something behind his ear.. Your blood instantly went cold once you saw three sixes; however you weren't scared. In fact you were really the first person that Michael met that didn't practically faint when they saw his mark. Looking back; you supposed that's why you and Michael bonded so quickly and became so close.

It didn't take long for him after that to confine in you that people either avoided him or became obsessed once they knew; both reactions ultimately stemming from fear. You were the first person to look past that and to just see him as a actual human being - not just a vessel for some fucked up prophecy to play out.

Even though Michael's beauty was undeniable to you; the relationship you two had was strictly platonic.. and in the past that was never something that bothered you. You supposed that he was tired of people throwing themselves at his feet and what he really needed more than anything was a friend - so you chose to be that for him, not daring to try and test the boundaries your relationship had.

However; the boundaries were seemingly starting to come down naturally - because your relationship wasnt entirely platonic anymore. Things between you two weren't exactly black and white as they used to be; a great example of this, was how you two were planning on spending Valentines Day together.

You and Michael agreed to spend it as friends. Neither of you had a date and spending Valentines alone when you had Michael seemed redundant.. and honestly just boring. Instead of making Valentines day an all day event; it started for you two as a 'date' at 6 pm.

In order to avoid having to confront putting a label on your.. situationship, the venue for your lavish Valentines date was at a more.. private venue. He only gave you a address and instructions, you didn't really know what exactly to expect but you knew you weren't going to his house. It was somewhere new.

It was nearly six pm, the sun had just set - leaving the sky a shade somewhere between navy blue and pure black. The air was cold on your skin as you stepped out of the car, wondering where the hell you even were.

The area you found yourself in was completely bare and void of any trees, the only object or building you saw was a giant, black, metal structure. The instructions Michael gave you had told you about this but.. seeing it in person was merely jarring, oddly unsettling. You approached it, trying to ignore the nerves and anxiety you could feel creeping in.

You couldn't help but wonder what the hell this place was and why out of all the places you two could have a 'date', it would have to be here?

As you stood in front of an elevator - stepping in, you felt very reluctant to do so. It definitely felt a bit weird that Michael wanted to meet you in such a secluded place but.. he was your best friend. He would never hurt you.. especially on valentines day.. Right?

The doors opened and you slowly stepped out, immediately taken back. You were now in a oval room, with a long hallway stretching out. You first quickly scanned your surroundings for Michael but, he wasnt here. Not in your line of vision anyway. You nearly forgot you were here for Michael at all for a second. The interior was breathtaking; resembling a old, Victorian style mansion. Even though you were still utterly confused; Michaels reasoning for choosing this venue was starting to become more clear to you.

It was the cozy, romantic vibe the 'house' seemed to radiate. The dim lighting also amplified this affect; seemingly giving everything in sight a subtle golden glow, otherwise everything remained relatively dark. You walked through the building; down hallways, looking for any sounds of life at all. Your witchy senses didn't always work on Michael, so you didn't even bother to try to use those. He was right about how you were powerful but, his powers still outshone yours unfortunately.

You finally heard something, something faint; soft music playing distantly in the background. You followed it swiftly, the music getting louder and louder until you found him - in what appeared to be the library.

The room was immense; books were lined on shelves that bordered the room. Couches, along with a decent sized fireplace and chandelier - and of course a record player, also resided in the library. Playing a tune that sounded similar but you couldn't quite remember what it was.. whatever it was, it sounded old and romantic - maybe from the 50s.

"Your not very good at hiding, you know. The music was a dead giveaway". You commented playfully.

Michael greeted you with a smirk, obviously holding back laughter. He stood up from one of the couches; approaching you. He looked incredibly handsome in the normal black ensemble he was wore but tonight he sported a long black coat. Making you fondly nostalgic of the night you two met.

He got dangerously close to you, almost in your face but you weren't intimidated. Plus, you knew he wasnt trying to actually intimidate you. Michael being the way he was; you knew he wouldn't have asked you to spend Valentines with him if he didn't tolerate you in some way.

"Its a good thing I wasnt trying to hide then, is it"? He spoke; his eyes pierced into yours.

The direct eye contact was starting to get unnerving and so was the.. apparent tension. You took a step back, looking away and laughing awkwardly - trying to remind yourself you two were strictly friends. Best friends, in fact. Nothing more.. and nothing less.

"So.. what even is this place? You don't own this or something.. do you"? You asked, slyly changing the topic.

"Actually I do. It's being saved for something I have in the works; but nothing's official yet. I wanted to get your opinion though.. what do you think"? Michael asked.

Even though you absolutely loved, whatever the hell this place even was, something.. felt off. Perhaps it was the fact it was completely secluded and private. Too private. You knew Michael was into some weird shit with the Satanists but; you figured he would atleast tell you by now if he was planning on something big with them.. Something that would require a huge fucking mansion underground.

"This place is beautiful, Michael. But what is it for"?

"Your too eager for your own good, (y/n). You will know in due time, I promise; but for now.. come sit with me".

He gently grabbed your wrist and guided you over to one of the bare, black couches; you followed - sitting next to him.

The hours continuing were filled with incredibly cheesy gestures that you only rolled your eyes at, and teased him for. The first being a few small, pink flowers he had conjured up and then tucked into your hair. At first you really thought nothing of it, they were just pretty flowers. However; you knew due to Michael's nature that he didn't just so happen to come across those flowers, he summoned them purposefully - specifically for you.. You didn't bother to try and hide how flustered this made you.

"Those are beautiful; what are they"? You asked, gesturing to the flowers.

"Thought you'd never ask. Wild roses. They hold many meanings; most agree they represent both love, suffering, beauty.. life. They're even said to protect the living from the dead".

You couldn't help but to laugh at his explanation.

"Will they protect me from you? You know your not exactly human yourself". You teased.

The corner of Michael's lips slid into a slow smile, one that you couldn't quite decipher whether it was an ironic or genuine gesture.

You nearly jumped at how quickly one of Michael's hands suddenly slid up into your hair; seemingly picking out one of the petals that had fallen from one of the flowers - he retracted his hand, holding onto the petal.

"No. Your going to need something stronger than that to keep me away". He said playfully, before crushing the already wilted petal in his hand - letting it fall carelessly to ground.

You could only roll your eyes.

Next came the food and well.. you were beyond impressed. Your not certain exactly how he managed to get your favorite food down who knows how many feet underground, but.. he did. And it was perfect.

You were both pretty quiet during that time; Michael didn't really have a reason to be but you couldn't help but to get lost within your thoughts. Sure; you two were best friends but.. that didn't necessarily warrant him to do all of this for you. Was it possible that he felt.. something else, like you did?

You couldn't help but to shut that thought down as quick as it came; that had to just be you projecting. There was no way in hell he could love you back..

Wait.. love?

It was like a involuntary reflex the way you suddenly jolted up and backed away from the table. Even though it was just a thought, the fact you just admitted to yourself that you loved him.. What the fuck did that even mean?

Michael looked startled at well, you could tell by the color of his knuckles that he now had a death grip on his silverware. His icy, blue eyes matched yours with a startled gaze.. As if he was trying to contemplate your next move or to get a good read on you. You were more than well acquainted with Michael's powers by now; you knew how he had the ability to read minds and that's partially why you found yourself, slowly at first, starting to take steps away from him. Wanting desperately to get the fuck away from him. You knew that if Michael even suspected what you were thinking or how you felt, that your friendship could possibly be over. That would be it, he would want absolutely nothing to do with you. You would be no better than the dozens of women and even men that threw themselves at Michael; Maybe even worse.

You made it down a random hallway until you found yourself physically colliding into him - fucking transmutation.

You felt a sudden urge to just turn around to try and escape again but you knew he wouldn't let you. Instead you let yourself be captive, you let him hold you. Gently encasing you into a hug. It was painful how hard you were trying to hold back your tears - blindly running away was already embarrassing enough, letting him see you cry would be too much.. Too much for one night, anyways. You felt him let go of you - stepping back a little bit in order to make eye contact with you.

"What has gotten into you-" He started.

"Michael- I'm so sorry but I just need to go. We can talk about this tomorrow but for now I just really need to be alone-"

You tried to turn around in order to make another (more calm) attempt at leaving but you felt something grab at your wrist, yet again. His grasp, along with his hand were achingly soft. You hated how much you enjoyed him making physical contact with you - even if it was something just as docile as this. You also couldn't help but to hate the spark of electricity you felt when his skin touched yours - and you couldn't help but to wonder whether he felt it too.

"No. I need to know what I did wrong. I'm not letting us end today like this". Michael said, his voice was strained with emotion.

His words were spoken urgently, his voice unsteady and even threatening to break.. That's when you knew you completely fucked up. He totally misinterpreted your actions.. the sudden realization hit you, piercing your heart like a knife.

"No, your right. Can we sit"? You asked.

He let go of your wrist coldly, sauntering out of the hallway you two were in. You would be lying if you were to admit that his sudden cold actions didn't hurt you; it definitely stung but you couldn't help to feel in this moment that you kind of deserved it.

The walk over was quiet and even a bit awkward. When you two sat; he looked at you expectedly.. waiting for you to talk first and explain your sudden, impulsive actions.

"It wasnt you.. that's not why I tried to leave at all, Michael. You did everything right. I mean that's really the 'problem', even though calling it a problem still isn't the right word but.." You paused before carrying on.

"What you did tonight for me was perfect, and I'm so thankful for that, truly. But I just feel like I'm starting to interpret your actions in a different way than in which you mean them and that's not fair to you. I know you just want a friend-" Your words continuously came out faster the longer you spoke, you were completely rambling at this point but Michael stopped you.

"Hey, stop". He said softly.

You felt as if you were dreaming when you saw him start to move closer to you.. it happened so quickly it almost felt fake. Michael gently pushed you back onto the couch, so that you were basically laying down flat on your back. You pulled him back with you so that he was on top, your hands automatically going to his shoulders.. feeling the sudden urge to yank his black top off and to feel his skin under your palms. The feeling was tempting; you could feel how hot his skin was even with his shirt on. You assumed your hands were cold by the way Michael shivered and even groaned when you touched him, that had to be the only logical explanation for him acting like that..

The manner in which he bent down, his lips getting closer and closer to yours was nothing but diabolic. He stopped until the point where his lips were just ghosting above yours - maybe only really a mere centimeter away from touching. It felt entirely far too tempting to just - barely tilt your head forward and stop whatever game your friend Langdon was trying to play, but.. you didnt. In reality; the teasing was far too delicious for you to want it to end so soon.

"Who said I just wanted to be friends"? He whispered.

You could taste his breath as he spoke, you felt trapped.. But if you were to be honest with yourself, you wouldn't rather spend Valentines Day any other way than in this manner.. Trapped with your absolute favorite person, with nothing else in the world to do but to get lost in each other.

His lips roughly collided with yours with such passion that you really haven't ever felt before. It threw you off guard for a moment, but you figured there was no sense in shying from it. You had been craving to be loved by him for so long; craving for him to touch you like this and now that it was finally happening.. you only relaxed and embraced the feeling.

Time slipped away from you far too quickly but after all; time didn't really feel real at all when you were underground in a bunker. No windows or clocks to help ground you back into reality..

You knew it was atleast passed midnight now; hours had passed and you two were now residing in one of the random rooms that you had come to learn was of 'Outpost Three'. It was apparent how careful he was with his words when he told you about the place; almost like he didn't want to tell you too much. He told you most of everything, like the cooperative and how this building was for some type of event that would be taking place in the summer but you didn't probe farther. You knew he would tell you in all due time.

You two were lying on a random, spare bed. It was luxurious and dangerously soft, but if you were honest - the sheets almost seemed scratchy in comparison to Michaels bare skin. Your head wasnt on a pillow but instead on Michael's bare chest, his rhythmic heart beat nearly lulling you to sleep. Almost putting you in some type of odd trance.

You both watched the movie that was playing on his laptop; propped up on a few sparse pillows at the end of the bed. Although you really weren't trying to keep up with what was happening or what the actors were even saying. Instead, you chose to be fully present with Michael, almost entranced in his presence. You two weren't talking but, just being surrounded by him - feeling his fingers lazily playing with your hair was heaven to you.

You still felt as if you were in a dream. After all in what timeline would you ever be so lucky to call someone like Michael, yours?? Even though you two weren't exactly official, you really didn't mind at this moment. Labels only seemed to really complicate things and in your opinion; you felt more than privileged to just sit here entangled with Michael, and to escape the rest of reality for a while.

Marinette closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The breeze softly danced through her hair as she sat in the windowsill of her room. She opened her eyes and stared at the parchment resting on a book on her lap, her little bottle of ink sat next to her on the ledge. She fidgeted with the quill in her hand, frustrated.

She was trying to write a letter to Luka to let him know that they'd arrived safely. He was her right hand man and their friends were most likely bugging him on whether he'd heard from her or not. She needed to give them an estimate on how well the whole thing was going but she barely had a feel for these people. She was pretty certain they wanted this alliance just as much as the Order did, but she didn’t yet have any idea what exactly they’d ask for.

She sighed and dipped her quill in her ink, maybe if she started the words would come.

Dear Luka

I hope you are well. How is everyone doing? How’s Alya and the baby? How’s Nino dealing with her pregnancy hormones? How’s she dealing with his overprotectiveness? Has Chloe returned from her mission? How did it go?

I miss you all, I hope everything is alright back home.

We arrived safely at the Gotham Royal family's Summer home. They have treated me with kindness and respect.

She took a breath. Should she tell him about Prince Damian? He would in all likelihood be the next Black Cat. He was her match. She didn’t know him, but the Destruction radiating off of him was on par with the Creation that followed her. As much as she didn’t want to replace- She shook her head, moving on was inevitable, she needed someone to rule by her side. She needed to tell her court the truth.

I met him. It all feels too soon after everything that happened last year. The Destruction coming from him was incredible. Plagg would kill me if I didn’t introduce them. Please have Pegasus deliver the ring when you receive my letter. He can deliver it to my exact location, I’ll explain things to any witnesses. I’ll disclose more information on who he is if he accepts my offer of the ring.

She tapped her chin with the end of her quill as she reread her letter.

A soft mew made her look up, sitting next to her little ink bottle was a beautiful calico, staring at her curiously.

“Hey girl,” she replied softly, holding out her hand, the cat sniffed it then pressed her cheek against Marinette’s hand. She scratched the cat's head softly, smiling.

“Her name is Legend,” a voice said from her doorway. She looked up and recognized Lady Stephanie standing in her doorway. She was about to greet her when the girl kept talking.

“Oh sorry, your door was open, I didn’t think it'd be a problem, we’re just pretty casual around here and it slipped my mind, Your Majesty,” she said, quickly, her hands gesturing as she spoke.

Marinette smiled at her, standing and placing her letter, book and quill on a nearby table, “It’s quite alright, Lady Stephanie. My court and I are quite similar to you that way, and please do call me Marinette,”

“Only if you’ll call me Steph,” she replied, shifting from foot to foot in the doorway.

Marinette saw the movement and invited her in. They sat at the table she’d put her letter on and she folded it as they made small talk.

She melted some wax onto her envelope and pressed it with the Miraculous Court's seal as she listened to Steph detail a story about the time she and Jason had snuck into the kitchen to steal some of the pastries before a big event when she’d first arrived at the castle back in Gotham.

“It seems you are all quite close,” Marinette commented after Stephanie wrapped up her tale.

“Yeah, we’re family, you know?” she replied. Stephanie wrung her hands together before meeting her gaze, “Can I ask you something?”

Marinette could feel the girl’s unease, so she tried to appear reassuring, “Yes,”

“Yesterday,” she started hesitantly, “In the throne room, the older man who came with you did most of the talking. I don’t know much about the Order of the Miraculous, but I was pretty certain you’re their leader but you didn’t really talk so...” she left the rest of the question unsaid, clearly hoping Marinette would understand hat she was trying to say.

She could tell the girl didn’t mean any disrespect, she was simply curious and she couldn’t blame her. So she gave her a smile, “Master Fu is my teacher, I’m still learning to lead and he’s helping me through everything, until my training is complete he makes the important introductions and still does a lot of the talking. I will be voicing my thoughts a lot more during negotiations though,”

Stephanie nodded slowly, “That makes a lot of sense actually,”

They spent the afternoon together and had tea in the garden.

Marinette was listening to Stephanie ‘s retelling of how she and Tim first met when she recognized Prince Jason heading towards them.

Stephanie spotted him too so she paused when he got close. Marinette nodded her head at him, “Your Highness,”

He nodded back, “Your Majesty,”

He sat down on the open chair at their table and Stephanie quickly continued her story.

She listened politely, but she was aware of the Prince who had joined them studying her discreetly, if she hadn’t been trained to notice, she would’ve missed it.

He noticed her noticing him and she was impressed by his ability to read body language. He, if her training was correct, was growing more and more curious about her by the second.

Somehow managing to miss the tension Stephanie kept telling her story.

“We were both so incredibly oblivious to the other’s feelings and denying our own. Months of pinning and so many misunderstandings. Apparently it was an incredibly frustrating debacle to watch,” she said laughingly, giving Prince Jason a pointed look.

He groaned, playing along and ignoring their silent sort-of conversation that had transpired earlier, “Don’t remind me, it was torture,”

They all laughed, and a comfortable silence followed.

Well that was until Tikki appeared and the other two almost fell of their chairs. She turned to her kwami and decided to explain later.

“Guardian, Queen Bee is attempting to contact you,” she quickly supplied, ignoring the two royal siblings who were staring in shock.

“Put her on, these two can be trusted,” she replied, sipping her tea.

Tikki put down a device on the table and the familiar image of Queen Bee appeared shining in the air in front of her, it was nothing new to Marinette but the other two stared in shock at the moving image of a blonde girl in armor unlike any they’ve ever seen.

“Bee, this better be important, you know how much it takes out of the kwami to do calls (a/n I’m not gonna figure out a new name for it, calls make sense sorry not sorry °3°),” Marinette said sternly.

Chloe looked grim but stood up straight, confident in her choice, “I’m afraid it’s rather urgent Guardian,”

Marinette felt chills, Chloe rarely looked that grim, it was even rarer for her to address her by her title, “Queen Bee, what is it?”

Chloe grimaced. She gave her a meaningful look softly replied, “It may bring back a few unpleasant memories, Mari,”

It felt as though the wind had momentarily been knocked out of her.

The familiar green eyes that haunted her at night flashed through her mind. Immediately followed by a darker, newer pair. She pushed both images away, she’d deal with that later, now Chloe needed her to be the Guardian.

Marinette took a deep breath and tightened her grip on her cup, “I can take it,”

“It’s Gabriel, he has the butterfly, he wants -,” Chloe swallowed, looking at Mari with pity, she lowered her voice, “He wants to bring him back, Mari,”

Her grip around her teacup was deadly, it was a shock it hadn’t broken yet. She was certain her knuckles and face were both as white as a cloud.

“I -,” her voice cracked and she took a deep breath, she was in the presence of strangers, she couldn’t break down, she pushed her emotions back and went into her Guardian mode, “Tikki add Carapace, Viperion, Tigress, Rena Rouge and Paon to the call. Now. I want it taken care of quickly,”

Chloe’s eyes widened, “Those are all our top warriors,”

“Like I said, I want this taken care of quickly,” Marinette replied briskly.

The others were quickly added and they all switched to the language of the Guardians. If the two royal siblings could speak French, her and Chloe’s previous conversation had already given enough away. Chloe explained the situation while Marinette quickly pulled herself together, she could fall apart later. Right now her Court needed her.

Carapace looked on edge and she knew why. Rena was on the call and she was pregnant, he was scared that she’d have to fight.

“Rena,” she said after Chloe finished explaining, all eyes turned to look at her, “You’re not fighting, but your strategizing capabilities are too valuable to have you sit out completely. You’re on the side-lines for this one,”

Carapace looked relieved and Rena nodded, understanding.

She looked at Viperion, while half her letter turned out to be written in vain, at least she could get this done quicker, “I need you to send Plagg and his ring with Pegasus as soon as you guys finish discussing details,"

She took a deep breath, "I found my match,”

(a/n did I totally just only put the prompt as part of a single paragraph? yeah i did. Do I have any idea where this is going? No i don't. Is the fact that I don’t listen to my outline and do whatever the hell I want gonna stop me? Nope, not at all)

so today I just watched the first episode of Almost Paradise! And I’ve gotta say, I am impressed. I already had it on my watchlist but I was planning to wait to watch it for a while until I could let Eliot fade a bit from memory, just so I wouldn’t automatically think of him while watching Kane. But I ran into an article this weekend about how it was filmed in the Philippines and the details of that, and my curiosity was piqued considerably more, so I figured... why not? 

(I also started White Collar this weekend and that was very enjoyable, but that’s a post for another day.) 

Anyway, my brain’s buzzing now, so have some first impressions and reactions, plus initial meta-analysis because I am intrigued. In hindsight I probably should have recorded first impressions while I was watching, but I’ll do my best to remember the bits that stuck out. Warning for... exceedingly long post.

also, worth noting, Alex is definitely a notable level of... hmm, paranoid? this is just a tad bit frantic, though that’s understandable from a guy who almost got killed while in the middle of an attempted meditation

anyway, conclusion: hot damn this is a fun show! I am very excited to keep watching this. Alex officially has my heart, even if he’s a bit of a cocky bastard sometimes. Kane is fucking hilarious. (More reasons to be excited for Redemption!) Kai and Ernesto also have my heart, and I am extremely interested to see their character development. 

Honestly, the beauty is surprising. I didn’t expect to just enjoy how pretty it is. The blues of the ocean, the intense tropical colors, even the run-down gift shop--there’s such a gorgeous aesthetic to it all. If I wasn’t already invested in the characters and plot, I’d be invested for that alone. 

So... I have some thoughts on Alex and the show structure.

He’s obviously very disillusioned. There’s a lot of nods to the idea of war--he’s commonly referring to himself as a soldier, as a veteran, maybe as a casualty. I’m gonna take a totally wild guess here and say this show is going to be focused on the drug issues in the Philippines. (Wow, Synapse, how the heck’d you guess that?) I do find describing the war on drugs as a war, and going into the terminology that comes with it, very appropriate, and I like how this show is actively calling this to attention rather than using it as a convenient plot. They’re actually addressing the issue and discussing its impact. And given how overlooked certain aspects of the impact of the drug war on the Philippines is, this is a good choice, especially in order to alert American viewers to the issue. I’m curious to see how they handle that.

Again, interesting drawing parallels to war, too, and comparing it against the likes of WWI and Vietnam. It really gives that sense of weight to the issue and defines a vital aspect of it: the impact of the war on drugs on the people involved. It emphasizes that the people who are fighting it suffer consequences and PTSD just as a soldier in the field does, and it also emphasizes, with Kai, that it isn’t just the people actively fighting who bear the consequences. It’s also the people on the sidelines--it’s the families, the people on the streets by the gunfights, the economical impact, etcetera. 

But there’s also an element to Alex’s character that automatically makes him relatable to a lot of people... and it has nothing to do with the PTSD, nothing to do with the war on drugs, nothing really to do with the main issues. It is, simply, the intense hopelessness and depression that comes with trying to make a difference. In his case it’s making a difference on a severe worldwide issue. But the vast majority, if not all, of Almost Paradise’s audience should be able to relate to a feeling of never doing enough. And there’s certainly a large section of that group who can relate to being part of a fight that never seems to end. Doesn’t matter what you’re doing--if it’s driven at helping, it rarely ever feels like you ever do enough. But the advice given is excellent. One of the best things to do, when you’re feeling hopeless over this, is to focus on and take deep joy in the impact you do make. 

Alex is an expression of a frustration that a lot of people deal with. This, I think, is one of the reasons why he instantly drew me--and presumably the rest of the audience--in (outside of a fantastic actor and great humor). He’s relatable. He’s something that most people can see a part of themselves in. 

Anyway, symbolism and real-world talk aside, this is just... fun. It’s genuine fun. We’re covering rough issues, but there’s a lot of well-written tropes in here too that are written in that way that makes them enjoyable to relive rather than painful. The humor is delightful and plentiful. There’s a lot of beautiful feel-good moments. I’m suspecting this’ll be a comfort show, and I am perfectly all right with that.

you know i don’t have a lot of negative things to say about the show so far, there are some changes i don’t like that much or don’t think were necessary but nothing really that didn’t at least have potential to go in a good direction, but there are two things that do really annoy me: 

one. mr. benedict hasn’t fallen asleep like once in the last few episodes and he’s literally on an enormous emotional rollercoaster. i get that it tends to be more triggered by happiness/joy but we know it can just be extreme emotion in general, particularly since he literally fainted when the house got invaded, so like??? what gives???? i get he can’t be passing out every five seconds since he’s a little 24/7 stressed but like. when he was yelling and throwing things or even right after when he just comes up to them looking Distressed And Depressed, or like. later when he’s talking about his brother or when he actually sees him or like. just . at all? are we gonna pretend it’s just gone now? and like when he realized what gemini meant he one hundred percent should have conked out on the table like. what could literally be a more extreme emotion than finding out your long lost twin who you love and miss is also the basically-a-supervillain enemy of yours who is destroying society, brainwashing people, and who actively tried to have you kidnapped and possibly worse, 

two. ok maybe this is stupid but the cheating thing really annoys me. not that they’re doing it but just how Offended they are at how Wrong it is like. sure, there’s for sure a strong argument that under normal circumstances cheating is wrong. but like. y’all. y’all . you a) aren’t here to actually go to school, you are here to stop someone from Doing The World Domination, b) it’s kind of not a real school anyway, it’s an evil institute for brainwashing all of society, with nonsensical classes, that manipulates and actively hurts children, c) oh and if you don’t YOU LITERALLY GET BANISHED FROM THE ISLAND AND YOUR BRAIN GETS ERASED LIKE????????????? actually it is not only okay but Objectively Morally Right to cheat in your situation. it’d be one thing if it was specifically rooted in the fear of getting caught (which, to be fair, is mentioned) but like they--sticky in particular--seem much more concerned with it being Unethical and like. i get being uncomfortable with it, i do! but again! the consequences if you don’t are you or your friends LITERALLY GETTING BRAINWIPED AND SENT AWAY I???????? IT’S OK IF SHE PEEKS AT YOUR ANSWERS I PROMISE YOU IT IS MORALLY OKAY AND YOU WILL NOT GO TO THE BAD PLACE FOR IT OKAY 

anyway. 

this is kind of negative but not really, more thoughtful--what was up with the waiting room? like, ngl, my adhd ass would have just started like. scrolling through my mental playlist and i would have started just singing whatever was in my head, or just like, lay on the floor and take a nap, like. dont get me wrong, waiting sucks, and i would probably go a little stir crazy after a while, but it’d be in the form of like. talking out loud a lot and singing loudly to distract myself and honestly someone would probably come in to shut me up but like--you get the idea, the point is, the waiting room seemed a bit underwhelming. like i get that it sucks, but like. it seemed like an extreme reaction? to be fair, the room seems designed to fuck with you, with the weird ambient noise of the fish tank and the clock (i wonder if it actually is set to glitch like that like, literally, or if that was just symbolic/in his head?) but like. it still seems a little strange. although, you know, i wonder if it’s like. one of those signals? i mean curtain’s whole thing is messages you can’t hear, right? like, supposedly some haunted houses are caused by high pitched sounds just outside our range of hearing but like, we can still sense it, but without the actual sound to ground it it makes the brain all paranoid and sometimes even hallucinatory or something? so i wonder if the waiting room specifically has some sort of super high/low pitched sound playing that makes you all jittery and anxious and lowkey hallucinating (hence the clock and looping fish--the clock could be faked, but the fish seems a bit extreme. not impossible to fake in this kind of universe i should think, but extreme) actually.... wait is it just like.... a miniaturized and more intense/targeted version of the emergency? i mean, sticky did literally describe it as anxiety (but more intense) and literally what is the emergency but this planted growing anxiety about everything? idk, maybe i’m totally off base here, i’m not the sharpest tool in the box, but like. food for thought 

again not really negative so much as just kinda like Hm but mr. benedict really feels less calm wise mentor and more like. shouty and emotional and volatile? well, volatile isn’t the right word, and obviously this is like 100 percent super due to the whole Curtain Revelation but like. idk, it’s weird? don’t get me wrong, i still love him, and when he has gotten like that he’s never like. the worst he’s done is raise his voice slightly and then apologize after, the throwing stuff was all actively outside and away from the others so that’s just venting babes 

and like he never raised his voice with the kids or anything either (although to be fair, that was before the big emotional revelation that seems to have kinda shattered his normal mask(?), but i strongly believe he wouldn’t lmao) 

it’s just weird bc it’s not what i associate with the character? but like. it’s not necessarily bad, and he’s still just as passionate and kind and genuinely caring, he’s not necessarily an angry person and he’s certainly not violent or rude or anything, he’s like.

the core of the character is still there and it just makes him seem--you know, actually, i think that’s really it. in the books, obviously, it’s more about the kids and the kids alone. mr. benedict functions as a mentor and protector, but he’s kind of like a parent--parents are people, obviously, but kids don’t fully... compute that? they do, but they don’t. the first time a kid sees their dad really cry or their mom properly lose her temper when she’s normally so even and calm or whatever else, it’s a real shock. which is kinda how i felt seeing mr. benedict yell the first time honestly, lmao. 

but anyway, the point is, kids kinda see grown ups, particularly ones they look up to, as invincible, untouchable, etc. they’re almost not fully rounded characters (okay, that’s not fair, they’re still developed and fleshed out, but i mean, they’re not the focus or the point, they’re not here to be sad or angry so much as they are there to be the calm mentor/etc. right? to be clear i am mega simplifying this, but i’m trying to get the vague point across) or rather, they’re not really the main characters. 

while in the show, it’s split more evenly between the kids and the adults having their own conflicts and problems--they’re each being given storylines, and mr. benedict is grappling with a real emotional problem with this revelation of his brother, and we get to see him as flawed rather than as just the Calm Wise Dad. 

so like while seeing him raise his voice was weirdly unsettling for me, it was like. it makes him more human? more of a character? i think that’s also partly why i’d like to write fic for him in the first place, because he’s a compelling/engaging character (and again... the vibes r so Pure) while in the books, while i really liked him, i wasn’t as interested in that kind of engagement.

ngl I had to look up the tag cause I didn’t know what this was. I think I saw it as a side ship in a fic once and it seemed kinda cute not sure what vibe I get from it but it’s nice It’s good to see more canada ships he deserves more love

This was like one of my main otps when I was a litol kiddo. It still holds up ngl I love it and I love the vibes with the two of them. I will say though that some people get a bit hetero with it and make mattie and uwu baby which is like headache-inducing

100% OTP HOWEVER I hate most of the fan content I find. This ship has so many people being heteronormative clowns with it it makes me lose my goddamn mind I can’t stand it. Feliciano is a grown ass man people I’ll admit he's a bit of a soft boy but he's still an adult also whos dumb idea was it to make Germany the top? pft Ludwig radiates virgin bottom I’m so sorry but it’s the truth I love this ship so much I will go into ever site with content of them even the smallest bit of art or story because I love it so much. I honestly just hope that with the new season coming out that new fans will not make the same mistakes as the old fandom with this ship because I’m begging this fandom for good gerita content that doesn’t make me want to pull out my hair But real talk I could go on for hours about these two (especially if you subscribe to the ‘Germany is HRE’ thing which I do 100%)

VERY GOOD however I’m not a fan of most of the fan content like some people go way too far and make it like borderline abusive again with me disliking how the fandom sees russia it’s just really toxic most the time but otherwise I do love this ship
