I think I have only just realised (as of two days ago) one of the reasons I shoot the way I shoot. Without the human factor, I am very interested in the elements that make up a building. To try to piece them apart, and bring them back holistically to context, whether it's entranceways, openings, roofs, roof water drains, signage, etc. It tends to feel like these elements call out to me. In this instance, it was the strange trapezoid opening on the façade of this uncompleted church building combined with the way the partly visible stairs gives the false impression that it is a half-turn or dog-leg staircase leading into the roof's ceiling. Of course it wasn't leading into the ceiling! 😅 I made sure to confirm. Unfortunately I couldn't allay their fears enough to allow me take pictures inside. The interior was less impressive — unpainted and unrendered with plaster, just brute concrete and floors covered with fine cement dust — but it featured the typical galleries suspended on columns to either flanks of a church's nave. Everyday Buildings - Contrived Reality Ìkòròdú, Lagos, Nigeria. 2023. Midjourney's AI tries to construct what I think contains different aspects of Nigerian architecture. From the crawling vegetation on the overhanging roof shading a red painted wall with shops, that feels like its from South East or Mid Western Nigeria. First floor reminds of empty abandoned buildings on Lagos Island and many parts of Nigeria really. 2nd floor; I'm not quite sure where to place it... 🤔 70/80s factory styled buildings that have had their use typology changed. Reminds me of a bunch building in Calabar tho. I didn't set much parameters. Just "everyday buildings, Ikorodu and Nigeria". #everydaybuildings #architecturalphotography #nigerianarchitecture #architectureinafrica #lagosarchitecture #everydayafrica #architecture #lagos #yení #art #AIart #midjourney #midjourneyart #experimentation (at Lagos, Nigeria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqVOX7-MlOn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Urbanisation and Gentrification: The private building of stalls & shops (in yellow & orange) built sometime in 2018, replaced a one-story building. While another building to its right was replaced sometime between 2019-2020 by a low-rise office development painted in grey. Yába has been trying to densify itself for some years particularly with its proximity to the island from the mainland. Meanwhile a new bridge taking vehicles from Ojuelegba Road to Murtala Mohammed Highway, above the rail line is separating the visual connection from one road side of the Yába market from the other end of the road. While also changing how traders and customers interact with this section of the city. Image 1: Yaba Market, Lagos. 2018. Professor Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi who passed on, this day last year, was the first professor of architecture from Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Adeyemi served in his academic capacity first at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU Zaria), then Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), to Covenant University, and finally at Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH) now University of Cross River State, Calabar (UNICROSS). I had hoped to see him during one of his rare visits at the architecture department at UNICROSS, but that never happened in time before the pandemic struck.
