when I was at my playwright conference we went on a small glacier ferry tour and I don’t even remember what the conversation topic was but I mentioned that I’ve made out with my friends and they were like “woah what :0” like oh. suddenly this isn’t a safe space I guess -_-

I've seen a couple of people complaining that the Captain didn't get a Coming Out Scene so that means it's Bad Rep, and I think they're missing the point a bit.
Like, sure, it would have been nice to see him finally come out but also, he doesn't have to? Personally I think it's amazing that ThemThere managed to create a character who isn't openly gay but is so obviously gay that we all just know without him having to say it. It's clear that they put a lot of thought and care into all the signs - the way he looks at the guys he has crushes on, the little offhand comments about Mike making a very fine soldier or the builder being handsome, the references to queer culture (Dorothy, Elton John, Cole Porter etc). They didn't half-ass this. They knew exactly what they were doing, and they were careful and subtle about it.
Also, we know the Captain's personality by now, right? He only talks openly about personal matters when he feels it's absolutely necessary, like when he's explaining about the bomb in "Redding Weddy" and explaining how he died in "Carpe Diem", and he doesn't seem particularly comfortable in either of these instances. He was alive in a time when he either wasn't allowed or didn't feel that he could be open about who he was, and seeing as he's sort of stuck in that time, what with him still acting like the war's continuing, he's obviously still heavily repressed. And it's in character. It makes sense for him to still be closeted. And of course, throughout the show he does gradually learn to relax and open up a bit, but he's not a fan of change anyway so it also makes sense that it takes a while for him to do that. As shown in "Gone Gone" after Mary moves on, he'd rather keep himself busy than talk about feelings.
And this is more a personal preference here, but I really really love seeing a gay character who isn't out. Now this doesn't mean I don't like openly gay characters, I love them too. But we see quite a lot of them, and it's just nice to have something a bit different. The Captain means so much to me as representation because while he's not openly gay, it's still very clear that he is gay. He's not a queerbait character, because they haven't hinted that he's gay and then revealed that he's actually straight. They've purposefully made the Captain gay, and there's barely any ambiguity, so even though he never says, "I'm gay," you'd have to be a fool to think he's anything but.
Queer people don't suddenly become queer when they come out. Just saying the words, "I'm gay," doesn't make someone gay. Being gay makes someone gay. That's it.
And the Captain is gay. That's it.

Hey so maybe stop bashing on a fandom thats just trying to have fun wasn't it like Taylor Swift or idk another white woman who said "never hate on someone's idol it might be the only reason they're alive" and yes we recognize how the fandom is flawed but jesus christ chill dude
So you acknowledge that the fandom has its issues, but you don’t care at all and just keep pinkwashing bullying and classism? So it’s all fine as long as you perpetuate the classic stereotypes that equate evil with ugliness and poverty, twisting the canon narrative to fit your ideal of beauty privilege, conveniently rainbow-tinted so the stench of victim-blaming and body-shaming isn’t as obvious? But it’s suddenly wrong when someone calls you out on it?
I don’t have an issue with people liking the Marauders or the Death Eaters. Honestly, that’s great—everyone’s entitled to their preferences. My problem is that out of all the incredibly problematic characters in this fandom, you only exclude, vilify, and paint one of them as irredeemable: Severus Snape. Which, surprise (spoiler: it’s no coincidence), happens to be the only one in this lineup of super queer, super POC, super body-diverse OCs who is canonically working-class and desperately poor. He canonically doesn’t fit the stereotypes of the ideal masculine figure, which is exactly why the boys who do perform that toxic and aggressive masculinity bully him. He canonically falls outside beauty standards, so he’s mocked for it. He canonically isn’t the perfect British white boy, and he’s ridiculed for that too. Funny how you paint the epitome of white, economic, and cishet privilege as unique and different, but the one character in that generation who is the closest thing to queer-coded ends up being the homophobe? Or the misogynist? Or the sexual predator? When he’s canonically the only character from that generation who has actually suffered what we would now define as sexual assault?
Look, I’d have no issue with your fandom if you didn’t constantly engage in this bashing that reeks of classism and body-shaming. Oh, and let’s not forget the internalized misogyny—it’s glaringly obvious, by the way. But since you insist on making jokes and ignoring how problematic it is to portray the only socially marginalized character in that entire group as the worst villain, maybe it’s time to tell you straight up that you’re either a bunch of kids who have never opened a book about gender, politics, and social inequalities in your lives, or you’re just as much fans of bullies and the elite as J.K. Rowling herself. And if you don’t like hearing that, maybe do a little self-reflection. Because your double standards, cynicism, and hypocrisy are not only nauseating but downright embarrassing.

I make these with the magic poser app to use as refs! I’ve got a load of angles for each of the above poses and would be happy to share them if anyone is interested (either here or on a new blog specifically for these)

I hate it when I headcanon a character who’s canonically a girl as a trans man and make ships of him and a character who’s canonically a guy and I refer to it as a gay/mlm/guyxguy/whatever ship and someone gets mad. Like omg let trans people have FUNNNNN. Why are queer headcanons and genderbends cool until they’re saying that the character is trans???
“OMGGG you’re so misogynistic I can’t believe you would erase FEMALE representation!!!”
and like half of the characters in the franchise are women, and a total of… NONE of the characters are trans men. Also, my headcanon doesn’t change the source material. If my stuff upsets you, you can block me and go engage with the source or maybe every single other fanwork, since mine is the only trans man hc for this character that I’ve ever seen.
or when people are like “WTF??? this is so transphobic!!! how dare you imply that a character who looks like that could be a trans man?!?! do you think that trans men are women or something??? she uses she/her, and you’re misgendering her!”
No, I don’t think that being a trans man makes you a woman or vice versa. That’s why it’s a headcanon, and the headcanon is that this character is actually a trans man and not a woman at all! You’ll never guess what pronouns most trans men had to use at some point in their lives, and you really won’t like it when you find out about pre-(or no-)transition trans men… or trans men who are in the closet… or trans men who don’t know that they’re trans yet.
“But the character is a kid!!! Saying they’re trans is sexualizing them.”
I’ve seen this one from other queer people. Like did you miss when all of the homophobes said this about your identity, or do you think that bigotry is only bad when it’s directed at you?
“Why would you say ‘testosterone could fix her’??? Are you trying to call her a delusional woman?”
Why would your brain even go to that first? This literally has to be a bad faith reading, because there’s no way that someone could see what I said and get this unless they were specifically looking for something to be mad at me for.
(Note for anyone unaware: “Estrogen would’ve fixed him!” was a meme going around at the time I said this. I’m not sure if it’s still super big, but this was a joke to the effect of that.)
“So girls can’t be tomboys anymore? You just wanna trans everyone?”
This is like actual real life transphobic rhetoric. This isn’t even just shitting on my headcanon, but in fact, sending transphobic hate to a trans man. Thanks 👍. Maybe you should go send JK Rowling another message about how much you loved her essay instead of bothering me.
#transgender#trans#trans man#transandrophobia#<- not all of it but the ‘it’s misogynystic to be a trans man!!!’ part is. esp because it’s something that people say about real trans men#is this inspired by a Tik tok about how making male characters women is empowering and making female characters men is misogyny?#(although that post was weirdly about genderbending gay ships? idk why that’s discourse going around 😭😭😭. I miss old fandom sometimes.)#not exactly. although the comments on it sucked. I’ve seen multiple variations of posts like that and all of their comment sections made me#feel like I was wading through raw sewage with how full of shit the commenters were.#I saw one violently threatening anyone who portrays a canon girl as a man (in stupid Tik Tok speak)#oh Feng Min… oh Hilda Pokémon… oh Y PokéSpe… you’re all beautiful young men to me#nonbinary hcs also get you that last one super hard#I haven’t seen as much of this about hcing canon guys as trans girls other than posts where op says ‘name a girl character who (blank)!’-#and then makes an addition that you’re an evil misogynist if you said a MALE!!! (even though Brock Pokémon is a transbian to me </3)#which icks me out so bad. omfg. like she’s a girl to ME!!! so maybe that’s why I’m naming her under a post about GIRLS!!!#I imagine that most of the reason for not hearing much about it is because these types of headcanons just… really aren’t common#so if you have a bunch of experience with headcanoning characters who are canonically men as trans girls and the hate that it gets you then#feel free to add on (and also please talk to me about your headcanons… there are so few of us. we need to stick together!!!)#it’s not derailing despite this post specifically being tagged about trans men#that’s just bc that’s all that I talk about in my original post#this post has been in my drafts in different forms for probably like months#long post#I guess#anyone remember a while back when someone on this app got violently mad that someone put a character (canonically a guy) in the m/m tags on#ao3 bc the guy was hced as trans in the fic#and the post was like ‘grrr the ao3 gender ship things are talking about GENITALS!!! not gender!!! I’m not transphobic though <3.’#so now to imagine what it’s like to hc a character who’s canonically a girl as a trans man just imagine that but it’s worse and also you’re#getting it from other trans people too 👍

I finally found the source for the interview between Satomi Tadashi and Kazuma Kaneko (main writer and artist) where they literally call Tatsuya and Jun gay - (”homo” - english loan word). It’s from the Innocent Sin World artbook (pub. in 2000). Here is the translation, and here is a link to the artbook. It’s on page 32. It’s not like this is anything new, but I feel like it’s important to have the original text onhand when sharing stuff like this! Translation under the cut for ease of access/archival purposes:
— What do you think Jun thinks of Lisa and Tatsuya’s relationship? SATOMI: I think he wants Lisa to be a bit more gentle with Tatsuya. KANEKO: She’s really got a jealous nature, doesn’t she? “Shaddup, woman.” Didn’t everyone expect Jun to say that? And then he’d say “Tatsuya, hold my hand a little bit tighter please.” SATOMI: Well, everyone is free to think what they like about that. *laugh* Personally, I don’t think he’s necessarily gay. KANEKO: Jun isn’t gay…but he likes Tatsuya, right? SATOMI: He likes him. If Tatsuya asked, “Do you like me?” Jun would say, “I like you!” KANEKO: Tatsuya would ask “Do you like me”? SATOMI: I think he’d ask like that. KANEKO: I think he’d say something like “What do you think of me?” And then Jun would say, “I like you!” SATOMI: If Jun said something like that, he would turn his back and seem happy. KANEKO: Who would? SATOMI: Tatsuya would. KANEKO: Tatsuya would turn his back and say, “You do?” happily? Well then, he’s gay, isn’t he! SATOMI: *laugh* …that’s why I said that everyone can think as they like about that issue. KANEKO: Well, I don’t know much about that field, anyway. I’ll have to do a little more homework. Hey, does Jun have thick hair? SATOMI: It’s not thick. KANEKO: And Tatsuya’s hair isn’t thick either? SATOMI: Right. So even if it gets tangled together, they’ll be okay. (NOTE: This refers to old, old literary references in which two people slept together in the same bed, so close together that their hair got tangled together.) KANEKO: What, so they really are gay. I see, so they’re gay, huh…Well, then Jun’s probably thought of assassinating Lisa? By setting some sort of trap for her…

Maybe it's the evil little contarian goblin in me but I kind of agree with the messages the writes had for ppl in the finale. Nobody can tell you how to enjoy a piece of art but like if you watch 6 seasons of a tv show just to see two guys kiss & nothing else they could do would matter to you enough to make you say you like the show, you might be watching the wrong show. As someone who was mostly bored by the pirate show & the angel show (I liked them but not that much & I never bothered finishing the former) but really loved both of the vampire shows, I don't think shadows could've ever pulled off a romance that would even come close to interview, so I'm glad they didn't try too hard. If you want that kind of show, there already is one! An even better show you can watch right now! It's serious, it's romance, it's drama and there's gay sex in the first episode. Shadows was never going to have a grand romance storyline. The guys were basically already married. As someone who's been in that kind of relationship for over a decade I can tell you it's not that interesting.
When a piece of media doesn't turn out to be exactly what you wanted, you can either accept that & appreciate it for what it is or move on to something that is what you want. Don't keep ordering the wrong sandwich in hopes that it will some day have an ingredient you want. Just order a different sandwich at that point.
