synopsis: just a blurb, how you ended up moving in with Carmen :)

warnings: established relationship, reader is implied female (but little use of specific pronouns), fluffy headcanons, some smutty implications, some smutty implications but still fluff, mentions of alcohol and smoking, blurb is set once they're rebranding The Beef into The Bear.

It started with you "accidentally" falling asleep in his bed from the night before, panicking and hurrying to put your clothes in the morning before he had to rush to work. You weren't technically dating, but you were too close for comfort to be considered something as shallow as "friends with benefits." It was more than that.

But then things seemed to slow down. It turned into spending an extra ten minutes enveloped in each others arms. You shared, "good mornings" between sickly sweet kisses, his hands feeling up and down your torso while your fingers entangled in his hair. Carmen whispered about how much he didn't want to leave—as much as both of you knew he had to.

"You're gonna be late, Carmy." You'd groan, cupping his clean-shaven face and planting small kisses on his cheeks. Carmen let out a sigh of disappointment, realizing his short moment of bliss would be over the second he thought about leaving.

"I'm gonna clean up, 'kay?" He'd mumble, kissing your sweet lips one last time. His pupils dilated at the sight of you in his sheets, something he wish he didn't have to cherish from how little free time he seemed to have.

"Mhm."

Once he'd hop in the shower, you'd get yourself dressed before pouring him a warm cup of coffee, occasionally placing any dirty dishes stranded in the kitchen in the sink as an act of courtesy. You'd check the time, 7:00am,

As much as it pained you to leave without a proper goodbye, you worried that Carmen needed space- that he didn't have time to pepper kisses along your cheeks before he left.

"Bye Carmy!" You'd call out, but not quite loud enough for him to hear from the bathroom.

He wished you would've stayed just a little longer.

Eventually, you caught on. At one point, you swore you saw Carmen popping his head back into his bedroom to see if you were still there as you were already halfway out the door. From that point on, you started leaving little notes next to his coffee, littered with "I'm so proud of you," and sweet comments like, "break a leg Bear," and sometimes even an "I'll see you soon."

Then it turned into spending all weekend, every weekend, in his apartment—even though you'd been stopping by the restaurant between closing hours, and spending a good hour or two with him every other day of the week.

It just wasn't enough.

You started bringing a share-sized blanket and bottles of your favorite drinks whenever you came over, which was practically 4-5 times a week by that point.That blanket ended up rotating between your apartment and his, until it finally resided on the couch.

Wrapping himself in that blanket whenever you weren't around, reminded him that there was something else to think about; that there was someone else who needed him just as much as he did them.

You started leaving little things like your hoop earrings on the kitchen counter, or your puffer jacket on his coatrack, wondering if they'd still be there by next weekend; wondering if Carmen would ever have the heart to give them back to you. (Spoiler alert, he kept everything you ever "forgot"' in the exact same spot. Having a piece of you in his home at all times seemed to make up for your absence during the week, even if it just made him miss you more.)

Then you started packing extra clothes with you that you'd stuff into an empty drawer in Carmen's dresser. You brought your travel-sized, makeup bag with you, which you just ended up leaving in his bathroom. Along with your meds, and your skin care, and practically everything else you couldn't live without.

"You should just move in at this point." Carmen let out a breathy laugh as he watched you do your makeup, his eyes meeting yours in the reflection of the bathroom mirror. Not even 20 minutes ago, he saw you pick out an entire outfit from the spare clothes you brought, not even realizing that you left a pair of black shoes that went with everything, right in his shoe rack.

"I practically live here now," you paused to put on some mascara, your mouth gaping open as you tried to concentrate, "but my lease is up on the 23rd." You joked, twisting the cap on your mascara back on and tossing it into your makeup bag.

"I mean—would you want to? Live here? With—with me?" He physically turned to look at you, your reflection not giving him enough clarity. He needed to see you, whether you said yes or no. You felt your stomach turn, and the question seemed unreal.

"I— yeah, I guess. Only if you want me to, but that'd be pretty... cool." You turned your head to face him, gazing into his desperate eyes. He needed to be able to call this apartment "ours," not just "his."

This apartment felt more like a home than you than anywhere else you resided in Chicago. You made your commute to work from this apartment, you ate and showered and slept in this apartment, bits and pieces of you were tossed all around this apartment, you brought home every new piece of clothing and jewelry back to this apartment.

Carmen literally made you keep a spare key in your wallet, advising you to come over whenever you needed something—even if he wasn't home. He trusted you with his space,

He took it upon himself to buy you a toothbrush, the shampoo and conditioner you raved about after he complimented your hair, and extra pads/tampons/menstrual cups (since he wasn't sure what you used,) just for when his bathroom would be occupied by you. He cleaned out the hidden cabinet behind the mirror above the sink, making sure you had a place for all of your things. He moved all of his cologne, deodorant, lotion, etc in the cabinet underneath it.

All he ever wanted was to make sure you felt safe.

First Impressions.

Meeting Carmen's infamous mother for the first time.

warnings : while this chapter isn't considered angst, it's certainly uncomfortable. donna berzatto isn't quite the woman she used to be. this fic isn't very romantic or interesting at all, but it's raw and true.

BUZZ. BUZZZ. BUZZZZ.

Your phone vigorously vibrates against your wooden nightstand. The piercing sound startles you out of your sleep, the top of your head nearly knocking into Carmen's chin. His arms envelop you as your chest is pressed against the side of his torso. He grumbles, aggravated that his measly 6 hours of sleep has been once again interrupted. Last time, it was the sound of the next door neighbors car alarm blaring right outside the window of the bedroom you shared. Surprisingly, being on the 6th floor of the apartment didn't make the noise any less booming.

Who could be calling at this hour?

"Jesus fuckin—"

"I know. Fuck," you sigh, pressing a kiss against his neck to grant access past the gate that was his limbs around you. You give yourself a boost and push yourself off of the hand that once resided on his bare chest. Carmen rubs his eyes before turning over to face the wall, just to end up moving back because he's too nosey and frustrated not to be curious. His hand rubs circles on your back as you try to wake yourself up before answering the goddamn phone.

"It's 7 in the morning, who—" you stop yourself, reading 'Nat (Sis n' Law)' on the bright screen. "Oh. It's Nat," you raise your brows, turning back to Carmen.

"Hm?"

"Your sister," you confirm, pressing the green answering button and raising the phone to your ear.

"Oh. Wh—" Carmen tries to pry, but quickly shuts up when he hears a gritty 'hey' from your morning voice erupt from your throat.

"Hey, sweet pea!"

"Hi, Nat. What's, uh—" you clear your throat, running your free hand through Carmen's hair as he lies down on his stomach with his head down in his arms beside you. "What's up? You okay? It's, like...the ass crack of dawn right now."

"Yeah, sorry, I know. I know. Um—I just wanted to run something by you real quiiick..." she drags the last vowel of her sentence, almost as if she's distracted by some other greatly important thing that also can't wait until after 6am.

"Yes?"

"So, I know you guys are leaving on your honeymoon soon."

"Mhm," you nod, shrugging and looking down at Carmen when he lifts his head up, looking like a lost puppy.

Natalie spends the next 5 minutes or so beating around the ever-growing bush that is her fear of you saying no to this particular request.

She wants you to 'stop by Mom's for a bit,' to avoid her feeling 'abandoned' before the two of you disappear to Europe for a week. For a second too long, you agree. You nod your head and stretch your arms out and stare straight ahead at your open walk-in wardrobe. And then it hits you.

Mom? As in Donna? As in, the woman who'd been shut away from your eye-line of curiosity? As in, the woman you were to never ask about?

You quickly put Natalie on speaker, placing a gentle hand down on Carmen's bare shoulder and shaking him vigorously. He groans, grumbling under his sleep breath before stirring awake once again.

"Sorry, I'm just...trying to figure out what you want us to do?" It wasn't supposed to be a question, but the way it falls out of your mouth and the tone that makes your tongue go slick with suspicion says otherwise.

"I—God, this sounds ridiculous," Natalie curses herself, "I just want you and Carmen to pretend that you're sad about her not coming to the ceremony."

Carmen blinks. It's slow and threatening. He inches closer to you and you bring the mic of your cellphone down to his lips. You wait to see if he'll interject, not that you're condoning a man fighting with his sister. But you're too embarrassed to say anything yourself.

"Sugar."

He only ever calls her that when he's frustrated. That stupidly hurtful nickname with a tone that almost sounds like it's supposed to warn her.

"She didn't get an invitation. I—Jesus, fuck, I didn't want her there. Remember?"

You weren't all too pleased with the idea of not letting his own mother, now your mother-in-law, attend your elopement celebration. Even considering how small the party was and how mundane and pointless it all would've been to her. No, no. Carmen was right. Maybe you didn't need to be around his extended family. The ceremony was supposed to be small. Sure, it was crashed by two other women riddled with jealousy and envy for your achievements who were supposed to be your friends...

But at least it wasn't another Berzatto.

Right?

"Hi, Carm," Natalie grumbles, defeated. "She actually did get an invitation."

The room suddenly stills. You swear you can feel your heart stop the moment she says those words.

"I invited her," she barely whispers.

You don't even get a chance to blink before Carmen interjects again.

"What?" Carmen asks. Though, it sounds more like a statement than a question. Or an incomplete thought. Almost as if he meant to say "what were you thinking?"

"I knew she would find some excuse not to go because you hadn't done it, but I just—"

A moment of silence and hesitation fills your bedroom. The sunlight leaking out from your blinds tries to convince you, the sugary sweet tone of Natalie's voice coaxing you. But the bitterness of what she had done, what she continues to do during this phone call, makes you sick to your stomach again.

You think back to how happy your family was. Over the moon, actually. It was hard for them to accept your want for a 'small' wedding. One without extravagance and forcing them to come all the way to the city. But they'd met Carmen plenty times before. They seemed to fall in love with him, just as you did, harder and harder every visit. As long as you were at peace, they were, too. Even if it was untraditional.

Without another word, you hang up and stare at your wardrobe again.

A pair of black boots that collect dust on the ground of your closet call your name.

Just get this over with. You'll never have to talk about it again. Just do it.

"I just don't understand why this is, like—even necessary," Carmen scratches the back of his neck, his other hand gripping the steering wheel of the black SUV you shared. He stares down at the godawful dress shoes you forced him into. You decided that looking as presentable as humanly possible was the closest you'd get to earning some recognition. Plus, they match with his sweater. Everyone seems to win but him.

"Carm," you sigh, picking your head up from its spot where it was formally leaning against the tinted window. "I've met the woman, what—"

"—Twice," he finishes for you, putting the car in park and sighing into his hands as his palms, sweaty with anxiety and dread, cover his face. He seems to do that a lot.

It's like seeing a little boy at kindergarten playground, filled with rambunctious kids who play hopscotch and tag and bubblegum-in-a-dish, who covers his eyes and thinks no one else can see him. No one else can see he's alone. That little boy is Carmen: with scabbed knees, big blue eyes dry and red from crying to his big brother about something that prissy little Sinclair kid said to him, and untied shoes he's tripped over at least twice at school that morning. You picture him, your heart tenderizing.

The moment Carmen steps up to the porch as the welcome mat cushioned the soles of his dress shoes, he thinks back to the last Christmas before Mikey died. It comes in waves. His stomach churns when he envisions the cannoli's (against his will). His nostrils flare as they remember the smell of tomato sauce and smoke. For years, it felt so far away. Now, it's right in front of him again. Your arm hooks around his. You wait seconds to feel him relax to your touch, but that feeling never comes. Carmen lifts his clenched fist to the door, knocking gently, hoping he won't be heard. You swallow as the doorknob struggles to rotate.

"It's gonna be okay, Bear."

Finally, the door swings open. A familiar face greets you. A relief. Sugar, with her now 3-month old son in her grasp.

"Hey cuties," she smiles, wrapping a free arm around you and kissing your temple before cupping Carmen's cheek with a look of guilt on her face. It's so brief you think you must've imagined it, but she mouthed "it's okay." She looks beautiful. Natalie is the limelight of every room she was in. And no, that didn't mean she lies untouchable under the spotlight—she creates the spotlight. Natalie puts everyone she loved in her limelight of unconditional love. You hope to see where exactly she got such wavering kindness from.

Eventually, you take your first step into the Berzatto home. The smell of cigarettes instantly wafts into your dolled-up face. While the smell itself isn't unfamiliar, it's certainly uncomfortable. It's almost like you could smell the sense of insecurity and jealousy through the tobacco stench. Your heart pounds, your eyes half blinking, just to keep them from drying out without you possibly closing your eyes and opening them to the sight of something horrific. A sense of guilt clings to your body. Suddenly, a scratchy voice calls your husbands name.

"Carm? Carmy? Carmen! Oh, Carmen—"

This blonde, clearly exhausted woman...her voice is warm. Like the sound of a yearning mother finally seeing the return of her warrior who she assured herself died at the hands of the enemy so as not to drive herself mad with grief if he never returned. You try not to look her in the eye, though she seems glued to Carmen anyway. Through the corner of your vision, you see his hand jerk away, his shoulder looking as if it struggles to stay in place. God, how he wants to leave. But, he drapes an arm around her and rubs her back with that same hand.

"Hey Ma," he sighs, his back rising and falling with the deep, anxious breath he just took.

That blonde, clearly exhausted woman, is Donna.

Finally, she turns to you. Her eyebrows raise. She's surprised, actually. You can see it in the way her crows feet nearly disappear in her soft, almost yellowish skin underneath the warm glow of the hallway ceiling lamp.

"Geez, I didn't expect her to be this beautiful!" Donna laughs, shaking her head to say 'I mean it, I'm not making fun of you.' Quickly, she's met with 'oh yeah's,' and 'are you kidding?' These voices and these faces are ones that you've never seen before. Some in photographs, but never in person.

"Thank you," you smile, not really knowing what approach to take with her. Carmen never really gave you the 'just be yourself,' or even the 'ignore her and don't even bother opening your mouth in her presence,' talk.

She asks you about your job, blinking every time you sit in your thoughts and the silence in your brain while you think of what to say. She's impatient, and you can't tell if it's because she's genuinely excited or if she wants to squeeze any kind of information out of you simply to seem like she cares. The only reason you bother with these debates is because of her reputation, after all. In the end, you tell her the story. Why you're in Chicago, how you ran into Carmen, and how grateful you are to be there tonight.

After what had to be hours, you've landed in the open space of Carmen's late father's study. Arrays of bookshelves smell of wood and the room spins with a sense of sickening nostalgia. Every wall holds framed photos of brown eyed babies. Natalie and Mikey, some photos separate, some together. It seems like this room has been left untouched since before Carmen was even conscious. The wine has made your fingertips tingly and your heart bubble with grief for family members you've never known.

"I never met him."

The sentence breaks your awe.

"He died before I was born," Carmen bites on the flesh of his bottom lip, his hands on his hips, thumbs digging into the leather of his Burberry belt. He turns to you, watching your eyes follow the memorabilia of childhood memories, drowned in the abyss of loss. He searches for pity in your face. Instead, a smile comes. Your eyes meet his.

"He seemed like a cool guy," you swallow, crawling around your thoughts, tiptoeing through your next words. The photo in front of you finally lit the bulb. Chubby legs drape over a pair of broad shoulders. Carmen and his father are nearly identical. While his hair isn't curly or blonde and his skin is not so pale, their blue eyes are carbon copies of one another. That same look of love lies within them.

"And you look just like him. He'd be so happy to see who you've become."

Your words are enough to make Carmen red with embarrassment and flattery. The way your hair falls so perfectly, Carmen's jacket being too big on your arms, your pencil skirt hugging your curves over your black sheer tights. You're fucking beautiful, and he'll never forget it.

Without additional thought, the desperation pours out of him. He cradles your face with a secure, gentle hand, kissing your lips the same way he did all those years ago. He'd been dreading this night the day he met you—knowing one day it was possible for the display of the love of his life to smack him in the face...but things were okay. Sure, Donna pried the two of you with questions of a house, children, and other things that made the air thick with awkwardness, but Carmen didn't parish the way he feared he would've. And this is him thanking you.

Scorpio moons take really long to talk about themselves and their past. Especially when getting to know someone they are romantically interested in (I notice this more with the men) it’ll be years until you really start to know them. This is why many can view them as toxic.. but once you wait out their little game they are loyal to you for life.

Taurus moons would rather pretend they are happy and content than ask for help. This is why they are viewed as emotional stable (but really they’re just repressing a lot:( it’s okay to be not okay♥️)
