Israeli forces give al-Shifa Hospital one hour to evacuate: Source
Nov 18th, 06:20 GMT
A medical source has told Al Jazeera that Israeli forces have given everyone at al-Shifa Hospital – including doctors, patients and displaced people – an hour to evacuate the medical compound.
We’ll provide more information as soon as we get it.
Impossible to evacuate everyone at al-Shifa within an hour, doctor says
Nov 18th, 06:37 GMT
Youmna ElSayed, reporting from Khan Younis, southern Gaza
We spoke to a doctor inside al-Shifa Hospital, who told us the Israeli army has given everyone at al-Shifa Hospital, just one hour to evacuate through al-Rashid street, which is what we call the “sea street”.
It’s not the usual street or route that people evacuating to the south are supposed to take, they usually take Salah al-Din Road, but they were asked to evacuate in one hour.
The doctor is also saying it is impossible to evacuate all these people in one hour, especially since they do not have any ambulances to transfer the patients and premature babies to the south. This is what he called “a crisis”, to ask them to evacuate in one hour.
‘A great state of panic and fear’ at al-Shifa Hospital
Nov 18th, 07:25 GMT
Youmna ElSayed, reporting from Khan Younis, southern Gaza
Our source at al-Shifa Hospital has been telling us that there’s a great state of panic and fear among the patients, medical staff and families [following the Israeli army’s order to evacuate the medical complex within one hour].
They consider this decision, this order, to be an impossible decision to make because they have no ambulances functioning to take that great number of patients to the south.
The Israeli army has not provided them with any other solutions, with any means of transportation, with any fuel for ambulances or for any cars to transfer those patients, premature babies, displaced families, to the south as they were ordered to do.
When this same incident happened with al-Quds Hospital, doctor Bashar Murad asked the Israeli army many times to provide ambulances, transportation means, to at least provide fuel so that they can use buses to transport the patients, but there was no answer from the Israeli army; they ordered them to take the patients on foot.
The doctors in the end had to evacuate those patients in hospital beds and push them through the streets to the other side.
But at al-Shifa Hospital, the situation is a bit different because there are a lot more patients – over 300. According to our medical sources, most of them are in critical condition and they cannot make the trip on beds to the south.
Forced evacuation of al-Shifa Hospital begins, emergency supervisor says
Nov 18th, 08:22
Earlier we reported that Israeli forces had given everyone at al-Shifa Hospital – including doctors, patients and displaced people, one hour to leave the medical compound.
Omar Zaqout says he and others have been forced to leave the hospital by Israeli forces, and that scenes outside the facility were “appalling”.
“We were told to leave through al-Wehda road. Dozens of dead bodies are scattered on the road,” he told Al Jazeera. “Many homeless people who cannot walk are left out in the open.”
Zaquot said the water supply at al-Shifa has been out for more than a week, leading to what he called an “absence of hygiene and cleanliness”.
“The electrical power has been out more than three weeks. Infants and newborn babies are left without oxygen. It is nothing but a medieval cave,” he said.
‘Horrible, unprecedented, humiliating’: Health official on evacuation order from al-Shifa
Nov 18th, 08:48 GMT
Munir al-Barsh, director general of Gaza’s Health Ministry, gives his account of the Israeli army’s forced evacuation of the medical facility, giving those inside one hour to leave.
The Israeli army called at about 9am [7:00 GMT], warning that all those leaving had to wave a white handkerchief and walk in a single-file line.
“They were humiliated by soldiers all along the road,” al-Barsh said.
About 450 patients were evacuated, while about 120 patients were left behind because they were immobile. To assist them, the hospital’s director, four other doctors and a small group of nurses remained. They were promised that a UN delegation would be dispatched at about 11am [9:00 GMT] to take care of those remaining behind, al-Barsh explained.
“We were forced to leave. Many of the patients were put on wheelchairs or rolling beds. Family members were forced to carry their wounded children or parents themselves.
“These are horrible, unprecedented scenes,” the doctor said.
Silence from Israel military on forced evacuation of al-Shifa
Nov 18th, 09:00 GMT
Rory Challands, reporting from occupied East Jerusalem
No information at all is coming from the Israeli government or official sources at the moment on the Israeli army’s actions at the hospital.
Only the Israeli media is reporting that this evaluation is taking place, and they are citing reporting from news organisations like Al Jazeera and other Palestinian sources.
Forced to leave al-Shifa at gunpoint, doctor says
Nov 18th, 09:05 GMT
Adnan al-Barsh, head of orthopaedics at al-Shifa Hospital, has told Al Jazeera “there’s not a single hospital or medical facility in service in northern Gaza Strip”.
“The Baptist Hospital is besieged; the Indonesian Hospital is already out of service without any resources left or medical supplies. We as doctors, we did all that we could until the last minute in order to save the victims,” he said.
“We were adamant on not leaving without our patients … we were forced to leave at gunpoint,” he said, adding that Israeli snipers are inside and around the hospital complex.
Israel denies ordering al-Shifa evacuation
Nov 18th, 09:23 GMT
The Israeli army denies that it ordered patients and medical staff to evacuate al-Shifa Hospital.
“It should be emphasized that at no point did the IDF ask to evacuate patients or medical teams,” reads a statement from the military.
The army claimed instead that it “responded to the request of the director of Shifa Hospital” to allow those sheltering in the medical facility and who wished to evacuate to leave through “a secure axis”.
The army “even suggested that whenever there is a request to coordinate a medical evacuation, we will work to facilitate it and transfer the patients to other hospitals”.
The statement was in stark contrast to accounts provided to Al Jazeera by the hospital’s supervisor, a health official and a doctor. They said they received a one-hour deadline for evacuation and were forced to leave.
Gaza hospitals director rejects Israeli statement on al-Shifa evacuation
Nov 18th, 09:30 GMT
Mohammed Zaqout insists that Israeli forces gave staff and patients at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza the order to evacuate this morning.
“I categorically deny these false allegations [that no evacuation was requested] … despite the difficult situation, the medical staff were working and operating … we were forced to leave at gunpoint,” he told Al Jazeera.
Moreover, Zaqout said that a list of critical patients has been handed to the Red Cross to be taken to Egypt for treatment, but that he is still awaiting updates on the issue.
‘Dozens of bodies’ on the road near Ahli Arab Hospital: Journalist
Nov 18th, 09:50 GMT
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Jihad Abu Shanab has described “total destruction” in the area around the Ahli Arab Hospital, also known as the Baptist Hospital.
Here are his translated comments:
Buildings in the vicinity of the hospital have been levelled.
Dozens of dead bodies are scattered on the streets.
Many of the bodies have been mutilated beyond recognition.
People are trying to bury as many people as possible.
Palestinian Authority: Evacuation of al-Shifa a ‘crime’
Nov 18th, 09:55 GMT
The PA’s foreign ministry issued a statement condemning the Israeli army’s occupation and evacuation of al-Shifa Hospital.
“The evacuation of al-Shifa deepens the humanitarian and environmental catastrophe Gaza faces and the great pressure that will increase on hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip,” the statement reads.
Israel’s actions represent “another hideous facet of the crimes of ethnic cleansing and genocide committed by the occupation forces against Palestinians,” it continues.
‘Another war crime’: Gaza media official on al-Shifa evacuation
Nov 18th, 10:10 GMT
Ismail al-Thawabta, the director general of the government media office in Gaza, says a number of patients forced to evacuate from al-Shifa Hospital were in such critical condition that they may not survive the journey to another medical facility.
“All are going to die simply because they require swift medical attention,” al-Thawabta told Al Jazeera.
The official also said that those inside the hospital were forced to leave at gunpoint and were humiliated.
“This is another war crime,” he said.
More from journalist Shanab
Nov 18th, 10:20 GMT
Here are more translated comments for you from journalist Jihad Abu Shanab.
Many who were forced to leave al-Shifa Hospital were unable to find transportation and forced to leave on foot.
Patients left behind at the hospital are in very critical condition and cannot be moved haphazardly. They require special care and protocols to be moved.
It remains unclear what would become of them, including the premature infants.
What happened at al-Shifa Hospital?
Nov 18th, 10:45 GMT
Al Jazeera has gathered a number of voices from inside Gaza to piece together what happened this morning at the al-Shifa Hospital. Here are the main takeaways:
The emergency room supervisor Omar Zaqout has told Al Jazeera that the Israeli army ordered everyone at al-Shifa Hospital – including doctors, patients and displaced people – to evacuate the medical compound in one hour through the al-Wehda road.
The Israeli army has denied it ordered the evacuation, claiming instead that it responded to a request by the hospital’s director to let those wishing to leave to take a secure route out. It added that it notified medics in the hospital that they were ready to facilitate the transfer of patients.
The Israeli claims were refuted by Mohammed Zaqout, director of Gaza hospitals, who insisted patients were forced to leave at gunpoint. Munir al-Barsh, director-general of Gaza’s Health Ministry and Adnan al-Barsh, head of orthopaedics at the hospital, provided the same account.
Evacuees were ordered at 9am [7:00 GMT] to leave while waving a white handkerchief and walk in a single-file line, the health official said.
About 450 patients were evacuated, while about 120 patients were left behind with five doctors, including the director and a few nurses, because they were immobile, al-Barsh said.
Zaqout said that a list of critical patients has been handed to the Red Cross to be taken to Egypt for treatment, but that he is still awaiting updates on the issue.
Al-Barsh, the doctor, added that Israeli snipers are inside and around the hospital complex.
Ismail al-Thawabta, the director general of the government media office in Gaza, says a number of patients forced to evacuate al-Shifa Hospital were in such critical condition that they may not survive the journey to another medical facility.
Several accounts describe family members pushing rolling hospital beds and wheelchairs, others were walking on crunches as they try to make it further south.
Al-Shifa now ‘deserted’: Hospital director
Nov 18th, 11:15 GMT
Speaking to Al Jazeera from al-Shifa, Director Muhammad Abu Salmiya says only he and a few others, including staff and patients, were left at Gaza’s largest hospital.
Here are his translated comments:
The hospital is completely deserted. Some of the remaining patients and victims are lying in the corridor.
The centre of the hospital is surrounded by Israeli soldiers. They are in total control. Even we, the very few medical staff that remain, cannot move freely.
Many of those in critical conditions, including newborns and kidney patients, will die imminently if they are not evacuated.
Food at the hospitals is also running out.
Israeli army checkpoint only allows women to flee to south Gaza: Journalist
Nov 18th, 11:26 GMT
Speaking to Al Jazeera, journalist Jihad Abu Shanab said Israeli forces instructed those leaving al-Shifa Hospital to leave through Salah al-Din Street.
“However, we received accounts from eyewitnesses that Israeli soldiers are deployed along Salah al-Din [Street]. This is the road separating the northern part of Gaza from the south. The Israeli occupying forces set up a checkpoint where men are denied access to the south, while women are allowed to leave.”
Israel army’s goal to ‘inflict as much pain, suffering’: Analyst
Nov 18th, 11:45 GMT
Al Jazeera’s Senior Political Analyst Marwan Bishara says Israeli forces were conducting an “ethnic cleansing” of Gaza amid the forced evacuation of al-Shifa Hospital.
“The end game is to inflict so much suffering so as to drive people out,” he said.
Infants at al-Shifa must be transferred: Health minister
Nov 18th, 12:35 GMT
Palestinian Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila has called on international institutions to intervene and transfer premature and wounded babies from al-Shifa Hospital to hospitals in the occupied West Bank or Egypt.
Al-Kaila said Israeli authorities are wreaking havoc in al-Shifa and have turned the hospital complex into military barracks, as they evacuate those inside at gunpoint.
“There is no hospital in the Gaza Strip that has the capacity to accommodate the wounded and premature babies,” al-Kaila said.
Evacuated al-Shifa women strip-searched ‘in humiliating fashion’: Journalist
Nov 18th, 13:00 GMT
Regarding the forced Israeli evacuation of people from al-Shifa Hospital, journalist Jihad Abu Shanab tells Al Jazeera that witnesses said they were subjected to strict interrogation for hours by Israeli soldiers.
“In addition to that, many were body searched in a humiliating fashion. Many women were forced to … take off their clothes and be subjected to body searches. These were very humiliating incidents,” Abu Shanab told Al Jazeera.
“Many of the civilians inside were kept hostage in the upper floor of the hospital, denied food, water, [and] treated with humiliation and abuse.”
Israeli forces took over 100 bodies from al-Shifa Hospital mass grave: Gaza Official
Nov 18th, 14:10 GMT
Ismail al-Thawabta, an official from Gaza’s Government Media Office, has told Al Jazeera the following information:
“The Israeli occupation forces yesterday exhumed the graves we made inside the hospital yard; they took away more than 100 dead bodies who were already buried. In addition to that, all those victims who recently died were denied burial as Israeli forces refused to have them buried inside the hospital.
“Days ago, as dead bodies were piling up inside the hospital, the hospital management was forced to dig a mass grave and bury all the dead. This morning, Israeli bulldozers dug up the graves and took away the dead bodies.”
Al-Shifa Hospital is a ‘big prison’, says director
Nov 17th, 12:25 GMT
As Israel continues its raid of al-Shifa Hospital, the director of al-Shifa says the medical compound has become a “big prison” and a “mass grave” for all those inside.
Muhammed Abu Salmiya tells Al Jazeera that there are 7,000 people in the hospital and staff are still working to help patients but they “lost all those who were in the intensive care unit”.
“We are left with nothing, no power, no food, no water. with every passing minute, we are losing a life. Overnight we lost 22 persons, [and] for the past three days the hospital has been kept under siege,” Salmiya said.
He added that they have appealed to leave the hospital but are being denied by Israeli forces.
“It’s a war crime. A full-fledged war crime,” he said.

4. Children of the Machine — CG5, Dagames
Follow me, we are children of the machine (We've built this machine!) Barely human in a city built on broken dreams
Ohhh I'm so so so excited to finally share my thoughts about this song!! I've been drawing and redrawing scenes and images I associate with Children of the Machine for... well over a year now, because some of these (the last one, especially) are images I had actually planned to post for last year's Spotify wrapped. The more the story developed over the past year, the more I imagined, and I think I'm finally really happy with my portrayal of these events from Xisuma and Doc's perspectives.
I always imagined this song as the opener to dbhc!Xisuma's Season 9 arc, but it’s also a great follow-up to Don’t Let It Reach the Heart, since it gives us a little more context about Xisuma’s state of mind going into a new season (given everything that happened in Season 8) and throughout the events of Destruction. I also loved the idea that the voice who sings the second verse and the bridge belongs to Doc, reflecting on Xisuma's struggles from the secondhand perspective of someone who is still slowly, painfully putting the pieces together.
#so much more i could say here but ill try to let the storytelling speak for itself#blows up into one million pieces#dbhc#dbhc art#dbhc xisuma#spotify wrapped 2024#spotify wrapped drawing challenge#dbhc doc#dbhc etho#dbhc tango#dbhc wels#dbhc cub#dbhc joe#dbhc mumbo#dbhc android 24#destruction#dlirth#art escapades#xisuma#doc#hermitcraft au#hermitcraft season 9#dbhc s9#tw blood#tw death#tw glitch#tw eyestrain#tw robot gore#lmk if i need to tag anything else!#HI SEAOSN SEVEN XISUMA

it’s very easy to tell the good satires and pastiches from the bad ones because the bad ones are too afraid to live within the form. like if you are doing work with fairy tales and you are refusing to look closer at the underlying logic and unspoken rules of what can seem at first to be a senseless form, you are not going to create meaningful work. to borrow a turn of phrase originally used by maria tatar, if you refuse to enter “the house of fairy tale” as anything more than a gawking tourist, you will miss the particular order to the way the table is set, the rooms that are locked vs the rooms that are simply difficult to enter, the set of the floorboards and the position of the furniture. whatever you build will then be a gilded imitation of how you believe the house of fairy tale ought to look, the table set according to your educated specifications and every door open. there can be no interrogation of themes from a writer who views the form as beneath them!
#it speaks!#sondheim understood this with into the woods; the deconstruction of narrative itself is able to happen because we are able to believe in ->#<- the fairy tale logic he employs prior to this.#its a kids book but adam gidwitz understood this with a tale dark and grimm!!#cant speak for the rest of the series but that first book uses the absurdity of fairy tale logic to speak about the absurdity of ->#<- adulthood and the pedagogy present in many fairy tales to discuss the ways parents hurt their children.#rule of threes is important but theres so much on my list ive yet to read; always welcome recommendations.#fairy tales#into the woods#<- this comes from musings on how successfully i feel that musical functions so it gets the tag

here’s your not so gentle reminder harry’s not piteously pathetic at potions. here’s a refresher:
fifth year, he sat for his owls and scored an exceeds expectations. not an acceptable, or poor, or dreadful, or troll (an ee in owls most probably equals a >75 in gcse o’s during the 90s)
he didn’t duplicate hermione, shrink her, and sneak her into the exam hall to pluck answers off her brain. he didn’t scribble a cheat sheet a la fa mulan on his arm
fifth year he has yet to clap eyes on the half-blood prince’s notes
as always, he didn’t feel confident about his answers/abilities, but he bloody exceeded expectations
he got into newts potions, a class of only twelve students
so harry got an ee, ron got an ee, maybe everyone else got an oustanding. or maybe only half a dozen got outstanding, and the rest exceeds expectations.
it still means the entirety of hufflepuff sixth years aren’t promising potioneers except ernie macmillan. poor boy probably tutors the others in the common room. all of the slytherin sixth years, excluding four, are absolutely worse off than harry and ron at potions. ravenclaw sixth years are shamefully inadequate at potions too, aside from four students.
harry’s not a marvel at potions. he doesn’t enjoy potions. but he’s good at potions, he’s capable enough. he isn’t blowing up cauldrons every month, that’s seamus. he can differentiate the ingredients. he knows how to cut, dice, chop, and stir. the spirit of sixteen year old severus snape didn’t possess him via the pages to help him brew his elixirs and essences in slughorn’s class. harry deciphered snape’s spidery, crammed annotations and executed them perfectly.
i’m bloody tired of these rancid ‘harry sucks so bad at potions except when he’s got the prince or hermione’s help’ takes.
#just a tired inarticulate quick rant#might have gone a wee bit too far ragging on all the sixth years who didn’t take newts potions#an exceeds expectations is not the minimum passing grade#it speaks for itself#exceeds the expected results#harry potter#harry potter meta#half blood prince#harry james potter#golden boy hjp#golden trio era#ron weasley#severus snape
