May 31, 2013 - part 1: wherein Lobac eats a cookie.

To be fair, it has been like two hundred years since my last update.  That’s a pretty good nap.  Just means I’m all the more rested to work on new stuff, right?  I mean, I need to keep a spritely pace up if I still plan on catching up to Lobac’s liveblog before said liveblog catches up to the comic.  Which for sure is still an actual thing at all, and not a bit of exclusive humor between friends.

Last time Lobac was getting into some theory crafting and analysis of the classpect system.  I didn’t have much to say about that at the time, particularly not much that wouldn’t qualify as spoilers, so iirc I was mostly just responding with random thoughts and video links, half of which are dead now.  There was a bit left over looking at the troll’s perster names, which was also good stuff, but lacking anything coherent to say about it, I’ll just gloss past the rest of that post, apart from:

Moving on, we rejoin the comic with PM visiting the Black Queen to retrieve the mysterious GREEN PACKAGE, which had been impounded by agents of the Black Court as a result of a traffic violation.  The Black Queen cuts an imposing figure, and Lobac is, of course, duly imposed.

These days, Lobac’s soft spot for this particular sort of shiny, black, possibly betentacled monster-type aesthetic is well documented.  I’m pretty sure she would have loved the black queen’s design even if it wasn’t just objectively cool as hell, but that certainly doesn’t hurt.  I’m kind of sad that we never got a proper fight scene out of this particular version of her.

These two panels constitute one of the most iconic funny moments in the comic.  It works really well.  Shoot, I should have done the post topper-edit based on these, huh?  Oh, well.  The one I already did took like four hours, mostly due to my extreme rustiness, so I’m not going back now.

Otherwise, I also like to think of Rose missing her mom here.  Maybe not admitting it to herself, but still.  I also still ascribe to the “everything Mom ever did was 110% unironic, Rose made up the whole passive aggressive conflict between them in her head, her mom wasn’t passive agressive she was just a bonkers drunk rich lady” headcannon that I think I spoke about ages ago in this very liveblog.

Anyway, yeah, this is both a hilarious joke and a fantastic little character moment for Rose.  Another contributing factor to Rose being my big early favorite with a seemingly insurmountable head start in the ‘best character’ race.

Actually, lately, since the end of the comic, she’s been gaining ground again for me?  I mean, one of the trolls definitely surpassed her for most of my Homestuck fan life, but... eh, whatever.  There’s no way I can getting into how my feelings about those characters developed over the comics life without being way more spoilery than even I’ve already been, so that kind of talk will have to wait for later.  Even if later means ‘years from now’ or ‘never’.

What prompted this thought?  The earlier black queen hand image hanging in your head, then a bit about narrators entering text, and that old bit just pops up?  It’s cool how brains work, making intuitive connections and all that.

What if we eventually zoom out to reveal a human exile commanding everyone. We’ve only been watching that human mess around up until now. The real story begins when they just suddenly go “whelp that was kinda fun. gotta look for food tho” at an incredibly dramatic moment.They turn away from the console.  And then we watch them slump through the desert for thousands of pages and their journey of introspective self-discovery is the actual story. Yes.

Honestly, they’re all cuties.  the cuteness of the entire cast, even the villains mostly, in both visual depiction and personality, really is a big selling point of the whole comic.

There was a time when I wasn’t super into cute things.  I was never viscerally opposed to cuteness, never when through a virulently anti-girly-stuff phase, but these days I’m MUCH more into things being cute.  I just like cute characters!  Sure, I like things that are somber and spooky, but the best is when they’re somber and spooky AND super cute!

Like, Hollow Knight.  That whole game is like exactly my favorite aesthetic these days.  Sad and morose and dark and adorable.

But more often than not homestuck still comes pretty close to that ideal.  You just want to hug the shit out of all of these doofuses, a few stab wounds here or there be damned.  Speaking of stab wounds...

A Dive Into Artistry and Athleticism (Pt. II)

With the basic information discussed and our minds enlightened with how the sport works, we will now be diving into the real deal of this blog post: the Full Team Event of Artistic Swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

It would be crucial to note that I am not at all familiar with the technical terms and lingos of artistic swimming. So, I would like to put up the disclaimer that I will not be able to use them much in interpreting and analyzing the game; so, if the technical terms of the sport do show up but were not used according to its definition in the sport, then please assume that they were used in their regular and literal meaning. Or, if the terms will indicate their respective lingo meaning, then I apologize in advance for its potential misusage. Additionally, any opinions to be mentioned here are all of my own thought, since this is a subjective review.

The full team event had took place on a bright sunny day in Rio de Janeiro, with the temperature at 24°C, the humidity at 68%, the wind direction going north north east, and the wind speed at 11.16km/h.

The event was the free routine, and the ordered list of the teams performing were as follows: Egypt, Australia, Italy, Brazil, Russian Federation, Ukraine, People’s Republic of China, and Japan. This list was also utilized for the technical routine portion of the competition, but the order was changed; the first 4 to perform in the free routine portion were the last 4 to perform in the technical routine event the day before, same with the last 4 in the free routine event being the first 4 to perform in the technical routine portion. Moreover, within those groups of 4, each team was chosen at random to perform next.

According to one of the announcers, the event had three specific panels of judges: there was a panel who would judge based on execution and synchronization, another panel will base points on artistic impression, and the last panel will judge the difficulty of the presentation.

Soon, the competition began and the first team to compete was coming up the deck.

Egypt

The first team to compete was Egypt, and as soon as they stepped up the stairs and went up to the deck, they began a short performance for their entrance, that I do appreciate seeing since it added to artistry of their performance as a whole.

As for their proper performance – just...wow. I can’t get too technical since it is a free routine, but just seeing their performance unfold was astounding to witness. The sheer strength and breath control they must have to be able to flip in and out of the water with no rests in between – watching them admittedly left me breathless. Bear in mind that this is the first performance of artistic swimming I’ve seen, which is why I am reacting like this.

From what I could see, Egypt executed about 4 lifts and 3 lifted tosses mixed with various leg and raised-upper-body movements. And while the tosses, according to the announcers, took a bit more time to be set up than usual, they were still impressively done; same goes for the lifts that were littered all throughout the performance.

What really intrigued me with this act, as well as artistic swimming in general, is that all the movements they do are so well-thought of and calculated. The Egypt team athletes had performed the whole 4 minutes without even staggering in their skills. Even when nearing the end of their act, their legs still moved in precise angles quickly along the fast beat that played through the speakers – and mind you, they still had giant smiles plastered on their faces. I don’t know about you, but that to me screams utter determined professionalism.

It wasn't long until the end of Egypt's performance came, and the announcement of points immediately followed the performance. Moving on - on the authority of the panels of judges, Egypt’s score had totaled to 78.5667 for the free routine – 23.5000 for execution, 31.4667 for artistic impression, 23.6000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 76.9838 for their technical routine. With both scores, Egypt in total had a score of 155.5505 in the whole artistic swimming event, which tentatively placed them in first.

Australia

The second team to compete was Australia, and according to the announcer, the team adopted an ‘Outback’ theme that featured ‘unique flora and fauna.’ Like Egypt, they also had a performance for an entrance before diving into the pool for their main showcase.

Australia began with a full standing lift with one of the athletes, followed by – what I assume is – a back stretch lift. After that was a lifted toss that took a bit of time to be set up. The athletes also executed numerous individual flips across the water. Their pattern was phenomenal for their routine, and comparing their artistry with Egypt’s – I can say they offered more, overall.

I did, however, notice that the precision in their synchronization was a bit off compared to Egypt’s that was more defined. It isn’t too noticeable, but if you’re looking for it, then you can catch some of the athletes falling a fraction of a second behind their other team mates when doing certain movements.

Granted that Australia’s athletes were relevantly new and that they were doing more difficult patterns and movements for their level of expertise, the off in precision is understandable. They did good though, and their performance was fun to watch, as well as interesting since they incorporated a lot of elements that matched the theme they were going for.

After the end of their performance, the scores were announced. On the authority of the panels of judges, Australia’s score had totaled to 75.4333 for the free routine – 22.6000 for execution, 30.1333 for artistic impression, 22.7000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 74.0667 for their technical routine. With both scores, Australia in total had a score of 149.50 in the whole artistic swimming event, which tentatively placed them in second.

Italy

The third team to compete was Italy, and like Australia, they also had a theme, that which was ‘Seasons of Earth,’ and all of their athletes – save for one of them – were also first-timers.

After a short showcase as an entrance, the Italian athletes dove into the pool and began their main performance. Starting off with a 2-flip toss, the Italy team was off to a good start.

Their synchronization was spot on, and their interpretations of the Earth’s seasons were also artistically impressive. Their patterns were executed well, and every single position was seemingly well-defined. They displayed an immense amount of core strength and speed as first-timers, and to see them transition so quickly from one segment into another was really a sight for sore eyes.

In comparison to Australia and Egypt, I believe Italy’s precision was more concrete and cleanly exhibited. Their formations were well put-together, and most – if not all – of their lifts (which were noticeably more, compared to the last two teams) were very powerful. When you see them without knowing a bit of their background, you’d think that they were seasoned Olympians and not like the first-timers that they were.

Because of the speed that they utilized in executing their routine positions and patterns, I’m sure that the athletes were tired after doing all of them, but all through to the end of their performance, not once did they falter nor did their tiredness seep into their movements. And that, to me, is very impressive to witness.

After the end of their performance, the scores were announced. On the authority of the panels of judges, Italy’s score had totaled to 92.2667 for the free routine – 27.5000 for execution, 37.0667 for artistic impression, 27.7000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 91.1142 for their technical routine. With both scores, Italy in total had a score of 183.3809 in the whole artistic swimming event, which immediately pushed them up into first place, leaving Egypt and Australia largely behind.

Brazil

The fourth team to compete was Brazil – specifically mentioned as “The Carnival.” Judging from their appearance right at the start, I could tell that their performance was going to be bright and lively.

They began with an artistic flip toss that kickstarted an impressive synchronization among movements, as patterns were unfolded and the whole presentation was beginning to play off.

The speed at which the athletes transitioned from position to position was an immense sight to behold – the way their legs just moved so quickly even while hitting the water; everything was near-perfect, and it was only still the beginning of their performance.

Brazil incorporated a lot of elements that presented their home country in the presentation, and the athletes’ executions of such elements definitely contributed to the artistic impression that they were going for.

Like Australia, Brazil too had a lot of formations all throughout, and the swimmers also transitioned into them so quickly yet so precisely. This team’s movements were absolutely neatly executed, even when, I assume, the swimmers must have been tired by then – it really shows how much endurance they have to keep going at the speed they were going, while also doing a multitude of things one after the other in a cleanly executed manner.

Brazil’s whole presentation just screamed and conveyed absolute precision. And I think I’ve already mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again for good measure – their synchronization is really spot-on, even with the speed.

After ending their performance in a circle formation with the hands clasped together and raised up in the air, the scores were announced. On the authority of the panels of judges, Brazil’s score had totaled to 87.2000 for the free routine – 26.1000 for execution, 34.8000 for artistic impression, 26.3000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 84.7985 for their technical routine. With both scores, Brazil in total had a score of 171.9985 in the whole artistic swimming event, which placed them right behind Italy but ahead of Egypt and Australia.

Russian Federation

The fifth team to compete was the Russian Federation – the defending champions – with the theme of ‘Angels.’

The powerful music began, and after the swimmers dived into the pool to set-up for their beginning lift, they executed a breathtaking flip that I believe really showed the expertise that these seasoned athletes had.

Launching into strong patterns, the synchronization was heavily present in Russia’s presentation. Granted that their moves were slower in speed compared to Italy and Brazil, the Russian swimmers made up for it in artistry, precision, and power.

The way the athletes executed their moves and positions – it seemed like everything was calculative in that it was all done at the same height, in the same manner, at the same amount of time; thus really showing their synchronization to the point that it could even be said that they were really mirroring each other – even the way they sculled were almost – if not, really – identical. Now, this might seem a bit of a stretch but witnessing a performance like theirs, only good things can be said, and I say this as objectively as possible.

The patterns they incorporated were near-perfect and really elegant, I could say. Their whole choreography – from the beginning and, I assume, up until the end – was really well thought-out and very original; the illusions, fluidity and artistic movements they do with their whole bodies were really an impressive sight to behold.

At the rate and exactness that they went, I have really high hopes for this team.

After finishing off their presentation with a lift that was well-balanced and executed, their scores were announced. On the authority of the panels of judges, the Russian Federation’s score had totaled to 99.1333 for the free routine – 29.7000 for execution, 39.7333 for artistic impression, 29.7000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 97.0106 for their technical routine. With both scores, the Russian Federation in total had a score of 196.1439 in the whole artistic swimming event, propelling them way up in first place and leaving a very big gap to catch up to for the other teams in their wake.

Ukraine

The sixth team to compete was Ukraine, and this team was mentioned to be fighting closely against Japan for the bronze medal. With the theme of ‘Illusionism’ and ‘The Magic Box,’ these elegant swimmers dressed in white were ready to take what they deserved.

After diving into the pool, the athletes quickly got into formation to set off an impressive flip that kickstarted their presentation. Following that, they launched into moves that displayed a great amount of strength and balance, thus already rendering their performance amazing.

The speed at which they executed the combination of positions for their routine really bode well with their synchronization. According to the announcer, this was the first time Ukraine dabbled into team events, but they were already doing really well as first-timers.

The nature of some of their movements were noticeably not as difficult to execute compared to the moves done by previous teams, but the exactness at which they execute them, I think, is the reason why they are hard to do for other athletes. The precision they display with their combined positions whilst being in very close proximity amongst each other really shows how much strength, endurance and expertise they have.

Aside from their movements being done in a synchronized manner along to the beat of the music, Ukraine’s formations were also really impressive, and the transitions the swimmers did to move into such formations were unfalteringly quick.

Each movement the athletes made flowed well into each other. And the one thing I really want to point out, without even saying much since it speaks for itself, is the high split done in mid-air after a tossed lift by one of the athletes at around the 46:20 timestamp.

After closing the presentation in an artistic circle formation, the scores were announced. On the authority of the panels of judges, Ukraine’s score had totaled to 95.1667 for the free routine – 28.2000 for execution, 38.2667 for artistic impression, 28.7000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 93.4413 for their technical routine. With both scores, Ukraine in total had a score of 188.6080 in the whole artistic swimming event, which placed the team tentatively at second place behind the Russian Federation and ahead of Italy.

People's Republic of China

The seventh team to compete was the People’s Republic of China, and the team adopted a dragon theme, specifically titled as ‘Finding Dragon.’

They began their set with a flip toss that incorporated full-body spins in mid-air. Followed by moves that illusioned a flowing square pattern, the team was already off to a good start.

The angles that these swimmers moved into, the precision, the power, and the elegance to their movements – everything contributed nicely and neatly to their whole performance. Not only were they exact in where they wanted a limb to be placed up in the air, but they also managed to show their personalities through their movements.

The sequences of their patterns, positions and formations were woven well into each other without even taking a fraction of a second to rest in between them. The interpretations, as well, to their theme definitely contributed to the artistic impression that they were aiming for.

While their transitions to formations and positions weren’t as quick as the previous groups, the Chinese athletes still outdid themselves in the nature and fluidity of their movements. Not to mention that each of their patterns were done so skillfully even at the speed they were going at – it really shows how much they wanted to win gold after seeing Russia’s performance in that event.

Their whole routine was spot on and magnificent, I must say. It was culturally artistic with just the right amount of athleticism poured into it.

With the end of their performance came the announcement of scores. And, on the authority of the panels of judges, the People’s Republic of China’s score had totaled to 97.3667 for the free routine – 29.1000 for execution, 39.0667 for artistic impression, 29.2000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 95.6174 for their technical routine. With both scores, the People’s Republic of China in total had a score of 192.9841 in the whole artistic swimming event, and which pushed the team right up at second place behind the Russian Federation and ahead of Ukraine. While it was seemingly not quite the gold that they were hoping to obtained, at least the swimmers will be going home with a shiny silver medal around their necks and the whole pride of China on their hearts.

Japan

The eighth and last team to compete was Japan, and like most of the previous teams who already performed, they too had a theme they adopted – ‘The Dawn Start of a New Glory Towards the Sun.’

At the drum of their music, the swimmers quickly dove into the pool to get into formation, readying themselves to execute their beginning lifts. With a lifted toss that also incorporated full-body spins, quickly followed by a spinning lift, Japan had kickstarted off into a brilliant start.

Right off the bat, their synchronization was already well-displayed in their quick combinations and patterns, showing off an amazing sequence of leg positions that rivaled that of the other teams’.

After starting with a music that was a touch bit cultural as it sounded like it was played by traditional instruments, the music had transitioned into a sound that was seemingly being played by more modern instruments, thus igniting a bright and lively vibe to the whole performance. The athletes' whole vibe changed upon the transition of the music, and that, in itself, was a really good show of artistic impression.

There was one lift that I really want to touch upon – the lift executed at the 59:58 timestamp. It was a breathtaking section to see as it displayed magnificent balance, and seeing the other members working hard underneath the lifted athlete just proves the difficulty of execution for that one specific lift.

The music, after that section, transitioned back into a soft cultural piano instrumental that really presented well along with the athletes’ elegant choreography. The successive flips followed by the smooth patterns were telling of how well and how fluid the theme was being interpreted by these athlete-performers.

Nearing the ending of the showcase, the music took a festival-vibe turn, and as the performance transitioned accordingly to it, not once did the swimmers show any sign of faltering nor slowing down in their movements.

Ending on such a powerful note, Japan had finished their presentation, and the announcement of their scores were quick to follow. On the authority of the panels of judges, Japan’s score had totaled to 95.4333 for the free routine – 28.5000 for execution, 38.1333 for artistic impression, 28.8000 for difficulty, and 0.0 for penalty. Prior to their free routine score, they also managed to attain a score of 93.7723 for their technical routine. With both scores, Japan in total had a score of 189.2056 in the whole artistic swimming event, which successfully acquired them the bronze medal they were hoping

With all eight teams having competed already, the full team event came to a close. The order of winners are as follows: Russia in first place, China in second, Japan in third, Ukraine in fourth, Italy in fifth, Brazil in sixth, Egypt in seventh, and Australia in eighth.

Being a complete newbie to this sport, every single performance I’ve seen for this review really opened my eyes to how much work is put into by each and every athlete. Not only do they have to strengthen their bodies and move as precisely as possible, but they also have to be limber and flexible enough to move so elegantly. Their ability to make each movement, each position, each highlight and each formation look so easy is just outstanding and breathtaking to witness.

Personally, I think Russia was just miles ahead from the other teams, not including the fact that they were multi-time winners of the Olympics for artistic swimming. The sheer strength, power, endurance, elegance and calculation into every move really separated them from the other teams. They were noticeably slower in some transitions, yes, but only in fractions of a second, and what they lost in speed, they made up for in difficulty and in execution. With the performance they presented in that event, it is safe to say they successfully defend their title.

China, in comparison, was also almost as strong as Russia, but the precision in some of their movements, especially because of the speed, were a bit lesser compared to Russia. They too executed moves that looked easy but were difficult in reality, but had they poured in a bit more into its execution, I’m sure that the artistic impression and difficulty would have displayed more prominently in their routine.

Japan and Ukraine were in a really close match, and you could see that they really did the best of their best against each other, even though Japan won in the end by mere decimals. Italy also did really well, but I could see there was still more room for improvement; their speed of execution was definitely something I have to hand to them because the quickness in their movements was just astounding to see. The rest of the teams – Brazil, Egypt and Australia – had done tremendous jobs as well, especially for their athletes who were mostly first-timers at the Olympics and newly exposed to the standards of the worldwide competition.

Overall, the full team event was not only so informative but also so staggeringly amazing to see. I’m glad I got to know another new sport that, I’m sure, will soon take the world by storm in its prime.

Looped

Here’s my notes of that Young Justice death loop fic inspired by the Happy Death Day movies that I’ll probably never write. I didn’t get terribly far into figuring out how things go down in regards to solving the issue or solid motivations behind the actual murdering or anything, but if you want a rundown of how the loops were gonna go, then this is the post for you.

General premise: The Team is training with Black Canary who, unknown to them, is mostly just keeping them busy while some league business is going down (some Doctor Fate type magical issue that may or may not involve Klarion which results in .... A Time Loop!). At the same time, we’ve got movement from some villain(s) looking to make the best of a distracted JL by taking out a hit on Robin.

The idea was to use the idea of a time loop to mess with the fic’s format. So maybe the first two chapters are nearly identical and detailed but by the time you get to loop 54, you get something like a single word (or no word) update with only the word “Again.” on there or beginning to use chapter’s titles to help portray not just passage of time but also frustration among other things. Should each loop be its own chapter to drag out the suffering alongside Dick (a kind of compounded experience) or would grouping them work better to keep reader interest? That sort of stuff. Also the loops were generally a few hours long instead of a whole day, just to throw a wrench into Dick being able to detective his way out of it.

And now, onto the loops!

[Warnings for death, blood, violence, and injury under the cut]

(1) The first time he dies it’s unexpected. He rounds the corner on his way out of the training room, down the hall to the common room with the team trailing him, excited to thrash KF in a new fighting game Bruce let him buy when he feels the firey pressure of a knife sliding cleanly through his stomach and hears the wet squelch of it being dragged up up up until his insides spill out. It’s quick, brutal, and unexpected. A hand catches his shoulder as he blacks out, keeping him upright as the rest of the team comes up behind him. He hears M’gann scream and then nothing.

(2) Robin wakes up to Black Canary’s fist slamming into his jaw so hard his back hits the floor and the training room’s buzzer announces his defeat. He blinks black spots out of his eyes. He rubs his jaw, looking around, taking in the same scene and dialogue as before and wonders if maybe he hit his head too hard. Wary, but convinced it’s just some weird deja vu, he trails behind the Team as they make their way to the common room to play their video game. Swept up in the excitement, Robin darts forward to be first, turning his back as he rounds the corner to boast to the others when a knife slide neatly into his back. He watches the Team’s dawning horror as the knife pushes further before tearing out and plunging back in.

(3) The fist to his jaw hurts just as much the third time around. Robin shudders on the floor, ignoring the announcement of his loss and the others’ words until a hand lands on his shoulder. Robin startles, body reacting automatically as he grabs the hand and flips the offender over his shoulder. Kaldur lands with a solid thud and a huff of breath, shocking the room into silence. Robin stares, wide eyed, apologizing frantically and nearly hyperventilating because holy crap this makes no sense. It makes no sense and he doesn’t understand, nothing makes sense and his back hurts were the knife slid in and suddenly Black Canary is there telling him to breathe. He does. Ignores the sick feeling in his stomach and apologizes again. The trip to the common room is tense, Robin on edge still so KF tries to lighten it w/ a joke. This time, from the back of the group, Robin sees the shadow dart out from behind the corner and rushes forward w/ a warning for KF to watch out. He watches one arm pull back as the other shoves KF aside before the intruder throws a dagger. It hits its mark and Robin’s world goes dark.

(4) Robin grits his teeth, dizzy from Black Canary’s punch, and scrambles out of the training room, ignoring the others’ cries as he runs full tilt toward the same spot he’s dies thrice already. He pulls out 2 wingdings as he nears, throws one that blinks, bomb activated, and jumps when the shadow leaps clear of the concentrated blast. The light catches on an outfit, orange and black, and hair white as snow and Robin’s seen enough of Batman and the League’s files to know exactly what Deathstroke looks like. The confrontation is short, angry, and ends with a sword through his neck and no answers about why he’s the one being targeted.

(5) Robin reels from the punch and the burn in his throat left over from his last death. He chokes and spits out a glob of saliva tinted pink-red with blood. Black Canary and the team fuss, concerned enough that Canary calls Batman and leads him the opposite way to the infirmary. He watches, concerned, as the team heads towards the common room and is about to protest when he remembers the way Deathstroke shoved KF out of the way to get to him. They should be safe, he figures, and follows Canary with no small amount of relief. They don’t make it halfway there before someone screams. Canary and Robin turn, running to the source, only to find the team struggling to fend off Deathstroke and Artemis on the floor in a pool of her own blood. Robin feels sick even before Deathstroke’s eyes find him, but it’s fury that drives him into a mad dash forward. He feels his skull crack against the wall twice before he blacks out.

(6) Convinces the team to go elsewhere. Snapped neck. (7) Wally dies. Stabbed through the chest. (8) Tells the team what’s happening. Disemboweled. (9) Tells only M’gann the truth. Strangled. (10) Kaldur and M’gann are injured. Gunshot between the eyes. (11) M’gann dies. Used as a human shield, Conner’s punch snaps his spine. (12) Tries to leave Mt. Justice with the team. Disemboweled again. (13) Explosive in his mouth. (14) Calls Batman. Decapitation. (15 - 21) Stabbed. (23) Artemis dies. Slit throat.

(24) The punch to his jaw leaves him reeling for a moment before he’s overwhelmed by tears. He’s hysteric, inconsolable. Nothing he does works and it’s getting harder and harder to breathe and he can taste iron on his tongue. Canary and the team are startled, don’t know what’s wrong and are trying to help, but Robin can’t find the words to make them understand and just sobs, clutching at Canary like a lifeline. He takes long enough that Deathstroke, for the first time, stalks into the training room. Canary is shot while he’s clinging/crying on her, caught unawares. Robin can only stare, wide eyed in horror because it’s the first time she’s died in front of him. He dies from a bullet to the back of his head.

(25 - 32) pretty much the same as loop 24. He doesn’t last long in these. Death by gunshot. (33 - 46) He fights back. Horror and frustration and the ever present taste of blood in his mouth. He’s the last one left alive in each of these loops.

He stops trying to tell the others. All it does is get them killed and he’s sick of watching his teammates die.

(47) He hides. Up through the duct work after diverting the team until he reaches his room. He crawls between the sink and tub in his bathroom and curls up with his eyes closed, shaking. “Disappointing.” He whimpers when the gun’s muzzle presses against his forehead, but never hears the shot. (48) He hides in Superboy’s room and calls Alfred. Gunshot. (49) Hides in the hangar and calls Bruce. Beheaded. (50) Hides in the ductwork and calls Superman, begging for help. A sword spears him through the stomach midway through the explanation.

(51) He laughs. Crouched on the floor after the punch to his jaw, he laughs and laughs and laughs until tears stream down his face and his whole body aches. He laughs all the way to the med bay, as Canary calls Batman, as they strap him down to keep him from hurting himself. He screams, thrashes, and laughs some more. He’s an easy target when Deathstroke comes hunting. A sword through his chest leaves him choking on blood through his laughter.

(52 - 78) Mostly catatonic, following the day’s original script. (79) He passes out from Canary’s punch. His chest hurts as he wakes in the infirmary. He’s informed of damage they can’t explain. Scars and bruising that’s slowly killing him from the inside out. They give him a sedative when he starts ranting, frustrated and defeated. He doesn’t stir and the kill is too easy.

(80) He diverts the team away from their original plans, but goes back down the hallway to his original death. He pauses before the bend where Deathstroke hides and calls out. Curious, the man strides out from behind the shadows and sizes Robin up. “Who hired you to kill me?”

(81-85) More tries to get an answer out of Deathstroke. More failures.

(86) He takes Canary’s punch and throws up blood. The pain of his last death paralyzes him for a bit but he pushes through as it subsides, ignoring his friends’ concern. He doesn’t bother diverting their attention before stumbling out of the room and calling out to his would-be assassin. He doesn’t even wait for Deathstroke to show his face before going into the time/death-loop spiel, including mentioning a few ways he’s died. Before this death, Deathstroke gives him something like a password - more amused than serious in the face of a dying teenager.

Annnd that’s about as far as I got before my inspiration and interest petered out. Most of the inherent trauma of the death/time loop experience was supposed to come from the experience of being killed over and over again in short succession (versus the kind that comes from living a day/week/month over again for years). The end of the loop would have come in somewhere around the 200th time, so saying each loop was about 3 hours long then Dick would have spent 600 hours or 25 days (minimum) reliving the same few hours before dying pretty horrifically.

Another significant part would have been the compounded physical trauma of each death (an aspect of the Happy Death Day movies I really really liked and wanted to explore). That and the idea that Dick, in this instance and without outside cosmic interference in the form of probably Doctor Fate, was fated to die that die, in those 3 hours. Literally nothing he changes would have kept him from dying because it’s not up to him (it’s ... haha .... fate).

TAKING NOTES: WRITTEN OR TYPED? THE GREAT DEBATE

 For the sake of simplicity, this evaluation is going to just be between written and typed notes, and does not include notes written on tablets (although I will do a post about handwriting and digitisation, and combining the two for the most efficient studying). (Also before we start I just want to say that the notes on the left of the header are from a lecture on the Phonetics/Invention of Parseltongue and it was honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever listened to)

In Favour of Written Notes:

Given the fact that it takes more time to write something out by hand, you need to be selective with what you write and are more likely to take down the most important and relevant information

It’s much easier to draw out diagrams by hand

If you do a subject like mine, where there are a lot of specialist symbols, it’s much easier to write them out than learn keyboard shortcuts or find them on your word processor

Notebooks do not run out of charge

You are less likely to get distracted if you do not have such easy access to distractions

It is easy to sort rough notes into a notebook, and provided you have file dividers and a small amount of spare time, organisation is not hugely demanding

Writing notes out neatly following rough lecture notes leads to better retention of information in the long-term, and given that the notes are visually rougher than typed notes, you will be more likely to write them out neatly (with extra information that you remember) following a lecture

If you don’t understand something that the lecturer is saying, you can always mark up your notes for further investigation later on

Visual formatting is easier to accomplish: you don’t need to use keyboard functions to underline text, you can just do it

Sharing handwritten notes is more difficult, but if a person doesn’t understand your shorthand (which will be more prevalent) or your handwriting, then the act of explaining it to them will reinforce the notes in your memory

In Favour of Typed Notes:

Typed notes can be done more quickly, and so are often more comprehensive in the first place compared to handwritten notes

Accurate diagrams can often be found with a simple google search, and will be more detailed than if you sketch them out

Formulae can be typed out cleanly on Microsoft Wiord, if you do a subject that requires them (and keyboard shortcuts are very quick if you learn them)

Laptops do not run out of ink

Handwritten notes require much more intense mental organisation than typed notes as they are being written, and more organisation is needed when it comes to the sorting of paper notes

Digital organisation is simple and paperless, and can be printed when necessary anyway

Typing out your notes does not mean you can’t write them out neatly on paper afterwards, meaning you might have more comprehensive written notes when you are done

You can research and explore ideas and new words in real time during the lecture so you understand the concepts for the whole lecture

More visual formatting options are available, including colours

It’s very easy to share typed notes with someone

My Opinion?

 I will talk about how I take notes more extensively in a later post, but in actual lecture situations I handwrite my notes, and then write them out neatly as soon as I can afterwards, so all the extra information that I couldn’t quite write down (and what all my shorthand means) can be put in fairly easily. I also digitise my neat notes by using a scanner app on my phone, but I will talk more about different methods of hybrid notetaking and the benefits of it soon.

I had a great week. I mostly fixed and cleaned things.

downloaders from the future

It seems gelbooru changed their markup recently, and our default downloader stopped pulling tags, at least for some. A user helpfully created an update--which is rolled into today's release if you missed it--but unfortunately users who were running older clients ran into an unusual versioning bug. The updated downloader would only work correctly on above v422 or so, leading older clients to get a variety of annoying errors about 'md5', 'hex' or 'additional_info' when either booting or trying to inspect the broken object.

I have fixed the problem here. Anyone who recently imported a 'downloader from the future' should have it fixed today. Furthermore, the various ways you import downloaders now try to check against versions your current client can support, and if they are too advanced, you now get a nice non-spammy popup message and the too-complex objects are discarded from the import. If the advanced object is buried deeper inside the downloader, it may not be able to discard neatly yet, and you will just get a 'soft' popup message about it, but I hope to tighten this up in future.

This version checking is also applied more softly across the whole program. It is less likely that one of your internal objects will be from the 'future', but the client will now make a popup if this is so. Please let me know if you get a whole bunch of these. With luck, this is ultimately a rare problem and I can toughen up this error and actually stop clients from running if their objects ever turn invalid.

I also fixed up error recovery in the downloader system UI and multi-column lists across the program. When some borked object enters them, they now try to show an appropriate 'cannot render' style text, rather than raising an error.

I also updated the gelbooru pools downloader. Some users get different pool 'gallery' markup from the site, we are not sure why, but it should be fixed now.

Last week's network object breakup went well overall. There was one unfortunate but harmless error popup that could appear on client shutdown, typically when certain websites had downloads start in the last five minutes of the program, which I have fixed.

Also fixed is the new fast tag search sometimes dropping subtag results. If you noticed that 'samus aran' was not appearing in results, even though 'character:samus aran' existed and could appear in a 'character:anything' query, this is now fixed. Thank you to the users who reported on this and helped me figure it out. A new maintenance routine will run on update to fill in any gaps that may have appeared for you. It shouldn't take more than a minute, even if you sync with the PTR.

I added a new 'profile' mode to the help->debug menu, 'callto profile mode'. This one tracks mostly UI-level jobs that work in the background. If I have been talking to you recently about heavy downloaders or similar making the UI juddery, please give it a go and send me the profile logs as usual. Also, profiles in general should be less spammy with the popups.

The 'bandwidth used this session' section of the main window's status bar is now more accurate. In certain cases, after a delay, it could report bandwidth used in a session in the hours or days before boot, but now it is exclusive to this session. The difference here is usually not noticeable, but if you restarted a client after pausing all network traffic and then left it open for three hours, it could be confusing!

fixed a bug where subtag entries in the new tag fast search cache were being deleted for all namespaces when a single namespaced version was went to count 0. it meant some autocomplete results were not appearing, often after some sibling changes. a new 'repopulate' job has been added to the database regenerate menu to fix this efficiently if something like it happens again. this routine will be run on update to fix all users, it shouldn't take long (issue #785)

fixed a bug where the new network objects would throw an error on save when a 'dirty' object was quickly deleted. I think this was typically sessions that only have ephemeral session cookies being created in the final five minutes of the program and then being cleared during program exit

when an archive/delete filter finishes, it now fires off all its changes in one go. previously they would go in ~64-file chunks over the next few hundred milliseconds. this will add a small amount of 'refresh lag', delaying page refreshes etc..., on bigger filter jobs for some clients, but it will guarantee that if you hit F5 real quick after finishing filtering on a processing page with non-random sort, you won't see the same files again at the top, only for them to be swiftly archived/deleted as you watch. trash file performance is much better these days, let me know how this goes for you if you do megafilters

the tag import options whitelist now checks subtags of parsed tags. if you add 'samus aran' to the whitelist, but the site delivers 'character:samus aran', this now passes the whitelist

thanks to a user's submission, the gelbooru 0.2.5 post parser is updated and should get tags again, for those users who stopped getting them last week--however, I never experienced this myself, so please let me know if you still have trouble. there could be something more complicated going on here

updated the gelbooru 0.2.x gallery parser to handle an alternate form of gelbooru pools--we did not figure out why different users are being given different markup, it wasn't as simple as being logged in or not, but there is a difference for some. this parser is folded in on update, so the gelb pool downloader should be fixed for users who had trouble with it

also updated the gelbooru pool gallery url class to infer next page url, as in the alternate form the next page is difficult to parse

the 'clear all closed pages' command under the 'undo' menu now asks for yes/no confirmation

added a 'callto' profile mode, which will be very useful in diagnosing GPU lag in future. the 'callto' jobs are little off-main-thread things like image rendering and async panel preparation. should help us figure out where big download pages etc... are eating up CPU

the different profile modes in the debug menu now all show popup messages, but only when their job exceeds the particular profile's interesting time, usually 3-20ms. this should reduce spam

the 'this session' bandwidth tracker on the status bar is now a special tracker that only includes data from boot. previously, it was using the 'global' tracker, which after certain time intervals (four minutes, three hours, three days), will compress bandwidth history into larger time windows to save space. if one of these windows covered time before the client started, it could spookily report a little bandwidth used on a client started with network traffic paused

bandwidth data usage in times shorter than the last ten seconds (which are smoothed out to avoid bumps) now also get the 'don't get bandwidth from the future on motherboards that had a briefly crazy system clock' fix from last week

fixed some disengaged database tuning that was leading to worse cancel times on certain jobs

updated a whole bunch of the help so section headings are links with nice #fragment/anchor ids, making it easy to link other users to a particular section. I will continue this work, and future help will follow this new format

fixed some bad character encodings in the changelog document, siblings help, and tagging schema help. these should now be utf-8 valid

object load improvements:

the client now detects serialisable (saveable) objects that were generated in a future version format your client does not yet support. this mostly affects downloader objects like parsers, where you might import an object a user in a much newer version of the client made. for instance, this week some users imported a fixed gelbooru parser in an older client, which was then saved and double-updated later on, and that caused other problems down the line. downloader imports deal with this situation cleanly, but otherwise it mostly makes a popup notifying you of the problem and asking to contact me. there are about 170 places in the program where objects are deserialised and I am not ready to make this a fullblown error until I know more about people's IRL situations. let's hope this is not widespread. if you run into this, please let me know!

if you were running an older client and manually imported the updated gelbooru parser that was going around, and then you got errors about 'md5', hex' or 'additional_info' something, it _should_ be automatically fixed on update. you should be able to update from previous to ~422, see it in network->downloader components->manage parsers, and it should just work. many users will have the entry overwritten anyway in the above gelb update I am rolling in. if any of this does still give you trouble, please delete and re-import the affected object(s)
