What's your opinion on pirating (of movies games or books)?

My own personal stance on piracy are reserved for my IRL friends.

That said, here's some musings that you might get a kick out of:

When Game of Thrones broke records for being the most-pirated show in history, HBO's public response ranged from "upset" to "nonexistent." But internally — and I know this from someone who worked in their accounting department at the time — everyone was over the moon. "Lots of piracy" meant that lots of people wanted to see the thing. It's an extra metric that film industry people can use to track how popular their stuff actually is.

A certain indie film company I'm on speaking terms with has talked in the past about how piracy is a great form of organic promotion. Their website asks the pirates to pay $1 "as penance."

Anti-piracy measures always make the experience worse for everyone— except the pirates, who always seem to find a way around it.

When a movie (or show) gets financed, it's a bet by the investor that "this will make $X money." With only a few special exceptions the entire cast, crew, and production team is already paid in full long before the movie reaches your eyeballs and earholes. All those ticket sales, streaming deals, and physical copies go to pay the investors back. Piracy doesn't take money away from the cast and crew— all it does is deprive money to the people who get a percentage of what the movie earns.

Piracy is the only way to access some movies and shows that the rightsholder refuses to put out on streaming / physical release. See also: Warner Bros. and Infinity Train.

Piracy is a legitimate form of protest.

With all that said: In general, if you can pay for the media you love, then please do. Especially if it's an indie creator. They'll appreciate you more for it.

not enough discussion about the gavins' complicated relationship with feminine-coded/beauty products, i don't think.

#for klavier because it's not as direct it's about how we never see him actually wearing lipstick? even though apollo literally attends #a concert of his which is where you'd most expect him to wear makeup. but apparently he just doesnt. or at least not in public #klavier gavin #kristoph gavin #i feel like there are several ways you can read into it. the misogyny/toxic masculinity one is really obvious clearly with kristoph's #singling out of men specifically and klavier's (probably accidental?) condescending manner of calling women 'fraulein' plus his general #mildly patronising attitude towards many of the women in the game (also probably unintentional)#(i think he's trying to be charming and it's coming off wrong to some of them. like ema. and me.)#but i feel like there's also maybe an element of... inherent perfecfionism to it? like both of these products are conventionally beautifyin #products and kristoph while he is open to showing people he uses nail polish specifically chooses one that's clear and missable unless you #see him apply it. he also feels the need to justify his use of it and specifically spell it out as something he chooses to do rather than #needs to do even though duh. that should be obvious.#idk there's just something about his seeming need to take control of that narrative that i find interesting. his need to spin it into a #'there's nothing wrong with my nails but I had the foresight to see that even the smallest parts of my appearance should be kept immaculate #and it's a choice i'm making to refine an already adequate part of my personage /not/ to cover some unsightly defect.' the need to emphasis #that specifically is so. hm. and with klavier i could see it being a case of him liking makeup liking the pops of colour yet being unwillin #to admit to it because he's afraid that other people might see it as him being dissatisfied with his own appearance regardless of if he is #or isn't. or even just perceiving colourful makeup as being unseemly because it's so overt and unnatural.#like i can see this as them both viewing 'real' beauty to be that which is inherent to a person and seemingly effortless #thus somehow negating the beauty which one achieves through cosmetics or other external means.#and if you want to use external means to achieve beauty or neatness or whatever then your only valid options are those which blend into you #natural state. like clear nail polish. or really awful spray tan.#i feel like klavier's less confined by these ideas (if they hold merit at all) considering he actually owns coloured lipstick and he wears #jewellery (admittedly quite 'masculine' jewellery no gems or pearls or anything like that but jewellery nonetheless) but i think it just #makes it more interesting that he doesnt seem quite able to cross the line anyway. like it's that ingrained into his system.#anyway that's all i've got. you guys should tell me what you think too #annotations

hello! im pretty sure the reason dgs herlock isnt called sholmes is because he wasnt public domain yet so i assume they couldnt get all the necessary rights!

that’s what i assumed too when the localization was announced but like shouldn’t tobias gregson, enoch drebber, selden, etc have theoretically also had that rule applied to them??? why were certain borrowed characters left completely unchanged and others localized Like That. not that i pretend to understand international copyright law or whatever the hell the conan doyle estate is doing at any given time but that seems weird to me lmao

#like theoretically i think drebber and gregson might have been safe bc a study in scarlet was the first one ever published #but selden comes from the hound of the baskervilles which was like over 20 years later iirc #i mean i guess baskerville MUST have been public domain since they use that name so heavily in the second game too #and like to be fair international copyright law is insanely complicated #but the whiplash of the name Enoch Drebber being applied to a very much alive very much not mormon man #while arguably very canon-accurate sherlock over here can’t even use his own name is something else #this is also definitely a personal hangup because i played the scarlet study translation patch in 2020 #so they’ll always be sherlock holmes and iris watson to me #asks

something that’s been on my mind a lot also is like. the potential for conflict between kim and harry because of harry’s can-opening.

kim is obviously deeply repressed and while that’s not necessarily a good thing, and he’s not necessarily happy about being that way, it’s also not up to harry to decide that he needs to be exposed. harry can be good for kim in this context if and only if it’s kim making the decision to open up. it can be good for kim if kim is like “there is no way i can ever be as openly fucked up and embarrassing as this guy. he is a freak and a disaster on a level i could never aspire to. so i guess it’s fine if we’re friends. he can know me a little bit.” then it’s great and they foil each other well and their relationship can be healthy and fulfilling for them both!

but there’s also a version of their relationship that starts out okay but goes down in flames because harry just can’t help himself. he either can’t or won’t stop the prying and kim has no inclination to let harry in. there’s a harry that will push kim’s buttons and provoke him and say or do awful things just to see how kim reacts. there is a kim that has no tolerance for harry’s behavior, no desire to play along, and not enough patience to give him more than one or two chances. and kim wouldn’t be wrong for that! kim has no obligation to give harry chances and no obligation to be vulnerable just because harry wants to know he smoked weed back in his 20s (which is a small complaint of mine. as funny as that dialogue is, i kind of wish that even passing that check didn’t actually give you a secret. kim deserves to be able to say no and doing so is way more consistent with his character.)

yes, sometimes kim NEEDS that little bit of pressure from harry so he has an excuse to do something he wants to do anyway, but that’s exactly it: it’s something he *already wants to do*. like the jackets or the dancing or the cryptid talk. harry’s blundering lack of reservations is an excuse for kim to loosen up on his own- it absolves kim of ultimate responsibility, protecting him, and that allows him to *do* things, freeing him. done this way, the dynamic can be healthy and mutually beneficial. but it’s also good to acknowledge the ways in which harry can try to expose kim in harmful ways that drive them apart.

#sorry.#i can get with kim/harry but only under a specific set of circumstances #so you can take this post as platonic or not because it applies regardless #the fact that they're foils means that all the things that make them work well together can also be huge sources of conflict #and harry has conflict with everyone ever because he's just Like That so. it's not impossible that harry chases kim off too #kim's not going to change in the blink of an eye because harry stumbled into his life #they might gradually influence each other but idk.#sorry i just hate it when people act like it's unequivocally good for harry to crack kim open like a crab leg.#and i resent the notion that kim will completely overhaul who he is for harry's sake #+ kim is in a delicate position as a nonwhite companion to a white protag so. not great yknow #im white so i don't want to presume too much but that's definitely worth pointing out. the game addresses it only briefly #disco elysium #harry du bois #kim kitsuragi #kiwipost #kk meta #hdb meta

Sealed all the cracks with Liquid Nails and patched the remaining bubbles from the last Bondo sanding. 24 hour cure time and rain tomorrow.... Gonna be busy this week, so might not get it sanded again until next weekend. Dying to know if the Liquid Nails will fix the segment cracks or not but I won't know until it's sanded 😒

I considered 3D modeling a specialized trowel to make applying Bondo to the side plate layers easier because my putty knife does a shit job at it, but I have to resist the temptation. Literally no one is going to be able to tell if the side layers have layer lines or not from the 3D printing process. But I'll know...

#3d printing tag #photopost #Thought I'd just make a big rectangle then use a boolean to carve out the shape of the layers #Then I'd just have to apply Bondo + slot it into the grooves and then pull it through until smooth #Still gotta find a post with a chain link through it to replace the crappy 3D printed one too #The one on the actual in-game model doesn't fit through the post. It hovers there and I don't think it's animated either #Which means not only does it defy gravity but it's also stiff and unaffected by it #Having a hell of a time finding or making one of my own though #Thought maybe there'd be some kind of farm equipment for looping small rope through or something #But there doesn't seem to be... Fabricating a metal one would be too hard with the tools I have too #Thought about 3D printing one. Not sure how that'd print though #The loop would have to print going through the post already #OR I could print a post with a hole and then make the 'chain' part two halves that then glue together through the hole... Hm....#That might be the best option... It'd be lighter than metal too...

currently researching the process of getting a canadian work visa bc that's my next step for after graduation (i already have a potential job lined up, i just need to make sure that position would be able to fit the requirements for a work visa) and while i cannot say i'm much closer to having this all figured out than when i started, i can say it gave me a delightfully unhinged idea for an episode in my aubrey webseries someday

from what I’ve seen of the devs’ official twitter, the game’s director amemiya is genuinely feral for the idea of straight guys bottoming.

but the way I interpret amemiya’s insistence that they’re straight is that the burly men believed they were straight before, and had their gay awakenings upon getting to know the protagonist 🤷‍♂️🤷🤷‍♀️ bc besides the sex stuff there’s a whole lot of other things in this game and I don’t straight men are doing All That for each other

Week 1 impressions of TotK

(No spoilers)

It feels...... Overtunned.

Like combat is punishing, not quite hard I don't think, but very very very punishing. I have about 10 hearts now and 20 armor score total and I'm still getting one shot by quite a few things if I go in swinging.

But the window for things like flurry rush and deflection has been pretty substantially increased. And the game keeps throwing stuff to make fire, ice, lightning, smoke, confusion, all kinds of crazy stuff at me. It very very clearly wants me to be using all the tools in the kit to make combat easier.

I can tell that once I fall into the groove the game wants me to be in I'll have a wonderful time, but anytime I stray outside of that groove and try to brute force my way through a problem the game decides to wear my skin as a new suit.

Which is..... Fine? I guess? I think it's going to turn a lot of people off. And I think it's much much much worse for new players to start on that BotW. The game clearly wants me to be doing stuff in a particular way, and it's very clearly designed to meat grinder you out of your BotW habits. But it feels very very unforgiving about that.

I guess to summarize my feelings so far I'd say it feels like that game world or book or story or other creative project that you have spent so much time and effort and blood and tears on, that it's now almost difficult for others to understand. It's the project you needed to stop working on about 6 months or a year before you did. It's a good game that has been so tightly wound that it's going to have some people bounce off it.

#totk #totk no spoilers #legend of zelda #i might have used the correct spelling of wound #or not. its entirely unclear #honestly im enjoying the game #but it's definitely too difficult for most people #i know for a fact my wife is going to bounce off it like rubber #which sucks because BotW is probably his favorite or second favorite game #but this is just needlessly punishing on the base difficulty #ill be interested to see if they lower damage in any of the patches m #ive already seen scores and scores of other people posting that its 'too hard'#i dont know if I'd say its 'too hard' but i would say its unenjoyably punishing #like they really really wanted to push you #to do stuff the way they wanted #but it's def too much stick #not enough carrot #about those gameplay incentives #and they have applied that to everything #dont read npc dialogue?#cool #have fun never finding a single fairy fountain #tear off right after being given the ability to leave the sky island?#have fun never getting the paraglider!#hell ive been playing for about 10 hours now #and I'm going to have to look up where hestu is #i have like 70 korok seeds and no idea #where that maracas weilding fuck is #its just stuff like that
