Fanfic Writing - New Year's Resolutions

Hey fellow fic writers <3 I know it's still not the end of the year, but it's December and I'm impatient, so I would like to share with you my writing plans for 2024 and ask you to do so too, if you want to. My Ao3 for convenience is Yuujeong, where you can check out all the things I'll be referencing below. So, in my case, I *hope* that in 2024, I will be able to: - write at least one more chapter for "Little House on the Hill" (I make no promises though, I've kind of moved on from that fic, even though it holds such a special place in my heart) - write and post the third installment of my "Heroes and Villains" series (I have neglected this one for months but I hadn't figured out this fic completely up until last month, when the full picture of it came to me and I managed to get unstuck. Hopefully, next year you'll be reading it) - finish and post the sequel to "Broken Vows" (istg I haven't forgotten it, on the contrary, it haunts my dreams, it's just such a tricky little shit that I ended up asking for help about it. It'll be in such capable hands now, and I hope people will enjoy reading it) - continue my Kim&Pete fic series (the second installment won't be too difficult to write - she says, as if she doesn't need at least a month for a fic to be written and edited before posting - but the one after that will be multi-chaptered and looong, so I'll need time and a lot of effort to pull it off. 2024 *will* see this series written and concluded though, I swear) - ARMPETE!! (I have a fic I've been meaning to work on for months now and it'll probably end up not being multi-chaptered as I intended at first. Unfortunately the inspiration for more than that has run out BUT I will enrich the fandom with this rarepair or so help me-) - write at least one BostonNick fic (there's one that's the most likely to be written, which is about Boston getting a haircut and I think it's cute and would love to explore the idea. Also, a Nick character study fic because my boy deserves the world) - write smut! Yep, in 2024 we're getting horny baby (prepare for some VP somno shenanigans, because there's not nearly enough of it in the fandom and that's a huge shame) - participate in at least one fandom event (the kpts Big Bang, while stressful for multiple reasons, was incredibly fun and I would love to do something like that again - same goes for things like Secret Santa events which are cool too) - try writing fics for some of my other favorite shows besides kpts (kpts was unique in the way only TMNT has been for me before, which was it giving me so many brainworms I needed to express my self artistically in the only way I was capable. In 2024, I would like to revisit some of my favorite shows and figure out if the same can happen with them too) I probably have more to share but I'll leave it here. Did not Read: Starter Villain

I was never a huge Scalzi fan and much of his recent work doesn't even seem to be attempting to be anything substantial and from what I've seen even people who like his recent stuff were cool on this. All that combined made this an easy skip.

5 Witch King (review)

I didn't enjoy reading this one and my opinion hasn't changed since finishing it. I kind of feel like this was testing the waters for a series and failed to do much interesting instead of just setting things up. Probably on the borderline of no award tbh.

4 Translation State (review)

Starts strong and gradually peters out. Outside of our protagonists most background characters feel like caricatures and the world often feels simplistic. It's still a good book and I've softened a little on it since writing the linked post.

3 The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (review)

A brilliantly realized historical setting of the 12th Century in the Indian Ocean with some magic added in. Given the attention to historical detail the characters all feel disappointingly modern though they're fun enough archetypes with Raksh and Amina herself standing out.

2 The Saint of Bright Doors (review)

Excellent book that I probably lacked the background to fully appreciate. I read some discussion after suggesting some of it was addressing Sri Lankan politics which I'll admit I didn't catch. While I could identify some of the Buddhist parallels I could only really notice them not tell what the book was doing with them.

Thoroughly enjoyed it - a unique world, enjoyable prose, interesting characters - and I'd be happy to see it win. I even considered flipping it with my first place choice.

1 Some Desperate Glory (review)

This is I expect the one that's going to stick in my head the longest. Kyr is a protagonist of all time (I am rotating her in my mind as I write this). Avi, Cleo, Magnus and Yiso are all great and so many of them have interesting relationships with Kyr and each other. Someone needs to make a hit adaptation so I can read bad fanfic about them (I'd prefer good fic obviously but beggars can't be choosers).

It deals with some interesting ideas that it addresses with wildly varying quality. The last section is the weakest and even though the ending doesn't stick the landing most of the rest of the book is great enough to make up for it.

There's a big gap between my top two and everything else and smaller but still substantial gaps from Amina al-Sirafi to Translation State and Translation State to Witch King.

Overall a decently strong set of finalists. I think any year Amina al-Sirafi was at the bottom of my list would be an exceptionally strong year and any year it was at number one would be a weak one so it being at the halfway point means it's an average year right?

Her name is Moy’va

pronouns: she/her

age: 31 (as pictured here, 4 years post cw/15 BBY)

personality: Moy’va is a defender at heart. She is a warrior who will protect the people she cares about at all costs. Outwardly, she seems very cold and harsh. She rarely smiles and is often perceived as intimidating. Inwardly, however, she has a lot of fear of losing people she loves (again) and keeps herself very guarded/struggles to open up to people because of that. She doesn’t socialize very much, so when it comes to casual or friendly conversation, she is pretty clumsy. Family is her number one priority and she would do anything to protect her children and spouse.

background: Moy’va was originally a farmer on Ryloth. She has two children: Brocca, her daughter, was born 22 BBY and Luce, her son was born early 19 BBY. She tragically lost her husband during the empires rise to power in 19 BBY. She took her children and fled Ryloth, heading to the outer rim and taking odd jobs to support her and her kids, trying to avoid the empires new rule. Around 15 BBY she ran into Rakshe (they/them), a humanoid working with the a rebel cell (and who is immediately smitten with Moy’va, despite Moy’vas attempts to be critically off putting). They were there as part of a rebel relief program (thanks organa) and helped return Moy’vas kids after they got lost. They get to talking and Rakshe offers Moy’va a place in the rebellion before they leave. Moy’va doesn’t accept at first but gets in contact with the rebellion several months later. Moy’va establishes a solid relationship with Rakshe (they’re married your honor) and work to raise their kids the best they can in a war torn galaxy <3

Hello everyone!. My name is Annika or Ink, whichever you prefer. I'm a writer of, mostly (high/urban) fantasy and romance (including erotica), but I've also written contemporary fiction, sci-fi, crime/noir, and I write poetry and fanfiction. I love to write about fucked up little gay people in Situations, particularly if they have complicated relationships with other little gay people and/or Society.

Depending on the WIP, I write both sfw and nsfw, but I tag everything accordingly. It varies, but I write stories that deal with discrimination, abuse, mental health, class struggle, and may have violence and/or injury and death, so just be aware of that. I don't want to completely rule anything out, but I will never put rape/sexual assault on-the-page, and I favor happy endings where Everything Works Out, Despite It All.

In my humble opinion, one of the best works I've posted is a little short story by the name of Henry and Priscilla because I love the historical setting (1920s) and organized crime is so cool <3 It's currently unfinished, but I hope to continue it someday!

My all-time favorite characters I've made (so far) are from my new WIP, Pride & Justice -- they're a very "opposites attract" couple, and the way they bounce off each other is very fun. This is one of the WIPs that does get ~erotic~, so reader discretion is advised.

WIP #1

“Just answer the question.” Stiles forces a smile on his face. “I’m fine. I don’t know why you’re so worried.” Derek’s features harden almost immediately. “Don’t lie,” he says in a low voice. “Your fake smile doesn’t work on me. Start. Talking.” There’s not much anyone can do but follow his commands whenever Derek gets like this. He’s not going to budge, and he for sure won’t stop pressuring him into talking, no matter how much Stiles twists and turns. “Who’s asking?” But that doesn’t mean he’s not going to try it. “My boss or my boyfriend?”

WIP #2

“Honestly, I just want to help people.” There’s an edge to his voice, and Stiles understands it as the accusation that it is. Theo’s proven himself to them time and time again after the incident with the Dread Doctors. Things have changed, at least between Stiles and him. Perhaps things would be less tense, if Theo agreed to tell at least Jordan and his dad what’s really going on between them. It’s not the only secret Theo wants him to keep. “Dad,” Stiles whispers. [...] “I’m finding that hard to believe,” Sheriff utters, only now turning to face Theo again, “when you just confessed to five murders.”

WIP #3

Once more, however, his name is linked to his romantic life – and the wedding of Tracy Stewart and Theo Raeken. Or rather, the non-wedding. The picture of Theo walking away from the altar and a screaming Tracy is absolutely everywhere. Right beside it, because drama is everything in the media business, is a picture of Brett and Stiles holding hands in public. Thing is that most people weren’t aware of Theo and Stiles’ relationship. Sure, there were a lot of rumors and speculation about them because Stiles went to a lot of Theo’s games, but with how often they broke up and got together again, they never really made it public.

WIP #4

“This can’t get out.” Stiles closes his eyes. “I don’t kiss and tell.” “I mean it. This should’ve never happened.” Stiles lets out a breath and turns around. “Relax, Jordan,” he drawls, rolling his eyes. “I’m going to leave and no one’s ever going to find out.” As long as Jordan manages to act like a normal person around him, that is, which, by the looks of it, seems highly unlikely. Jordan kneads his fingers as he stares at him like a deer in headlights. His shoulders are rigid, his cheeks pale. Overall, he doesn’t look like someone who’s just had an orgasm five minutes ago. “You dad-“ Stiles raises a hand. “Don’t talk about my dad while we’re both still naked.” Drawing his brows together, Jordan looks down at himself - almost as if that thought hasn’t occurred to him. He winces but persists, “he’s my boss.”

Okay, I think these (minus NPFP) are the most recent WIPs I worked on.

Thanks for the tag, @raksh-writes! I only have five fics posted on this iteration of my AO3, so I cheated and dug into the WIPs I’m closest to posting. All but two of these are VegasPete; Artificial Flowers is VegasTawan, and Going with the Grain is KinnPorscheFarmhouse.

a temporary abundance Saturday morning settles over them in languid golden hues and the scent of fresh congee on the stove, glutinous and savory.

A Close Shave Vegas must be going soft, because a few days of complaints about patchy facial hair are all it takes for him to say he’ll help Pete shave.

Going with the Grain Kinn was going to have an aneurysm over the way Porsche spread his lips around the end of a Farmhouse Cookies-and-Cream-Filled Hotdog Bun. (…I need to revise this chapter, I was rusty.)

Stable Delusion The house stood on wooden beams that swayed when the winds sailed up over the lake.

Lapping at the Edges Vegas trips over a lamp cord and nearly knocks over the knife display on the side table as he makes his way through the moonlit living room and down the hallway.

(WIP) Body Bag (nonsexual bondage body disposal roleplay) Incense smoke drifts in soft, spiraling tendrils over the table where Pete’s body has been laid to rest.

(WIP) A Grotesque Sound (the intrusive thoughts->dirty talk pipeline) “They get wider,” Vegas says conversationally.

(WIP) Off the Handle (Vegas overreacts to a tiff with Pete and starts sabotaging the means for self-harm) “It’s not that big a deal,” Vegas tries to convince the toilet bowl.

(WIP) Artificial Flowers (VegasTawan courtship fic/Vegas character study) For the first two weeks, Tawan was alone.

(WIP) Breathing Space (Space smuggler!Vegas/AI spaceship!Pete AU) “If you think I’d sail back there with your corpse inside me, you have another think coming.”

-> I don’t love you (punish me) a Big/Chan oneshot of these two finding the most intrincate ritual to be with each other without actually confessing their feelings.

2. “Pete considered himself quite lucky to not have been in the minor family house when the Italians attacked.” 

-> of sinners and devotion a VegasPete longfic that literally came to me in a dream and which kick-startarted my brainrot for KinnPorsche. In few words, Pete becomes Vegas’ new bodyguard, and then they both proceed to pretend that they are not undyingly devoted to the other. It was described once as “Mutual pining: the fic” and I think that’s a better summary than anything else I can come up with. 

I don’t have anything else written yet, but here’s a tiny sneak peak into some wips I have!

3. “I hate him. I fucking hate him so much.” Porsche muttered in between teeth. “I swear, every day I think I can’t hate Kinn Capulet more than what I already hate him, and yet- ouch!” 

-> A Romeo and Juliet AU longfic (heavily inspired by the 1996 movie) where Vegas Montague falls in love with Pete, the Montague most trusted bodyguard, at the same time his own most trusted bodyguard and best friend, Porsche, falls in love with his sworn enemy Kinn Capulet. I will post it soon... or, as soon as I can figure out how to connect the start and the ending, that is.

4. Kim was soo over Porchay.

-> A Kim/Chay oneshot meant to get me out of writer’s block. Kim is over Porchay, so he definitely doesn’t mind that he has a new boyfriend. At all. He does mind that the idiot doesn’t know how to properly treat Porchay, so he decides to step in and do the dirty work. He writes songs for Porchay, signing with the boyfriend’s name... and things quickly spiral out of control. 

I don’t know who to tag, since I’m quite new here and most of the people I was going to tag have already done this game so... @ttwisted-angel and @ourladyoflazarus but absolutely no pressure!

"Vegas, you're scaring me." -> Overcome

Each time Pete's lips parted against his, and each time Pete’s whimpered breath huffed into his mouth, Vegas was reminded of his own place in the world. -> No Love Like Blood

As if the couch digging into his backside wasn’t enough, the jarring video game noises made Vegas want to slice someone’s throat open. -> The Sweet Ashes Of Your Labor

Ears ringing and eyes half-blinded from whipped-up dust, Vegas hit the concrete floor with a grunt. -> The Short End

Pete blinked apart the sticky crust of blood coating his eyelashes, and readied himself for death. -> (WIP) In That Sharp Place

Now, the WIP one may or may not change, but I think this one will be it. If nothing else, this might urge me to stop editing and revising and just post the damn thing :')
