While reading stories of Alexander & his friends, it often feels like they could very well be today's youths. Is it because the authors present Alexander's world in a way relatable to the modern reader? Or there are things about youth common in all eras, like teenage crisis, romance, dreams, bold & adventurous spirit? And if I'm not wrong, you mention at one place that you don't "heroize" Alexander. That's interesting, since he's often worshipped a mythical hero. Why did you move away from that?

This query was really two, or at least I want to separate them into two, so I’ll address the matter of heroizing Alexander in a different post.

The reason teen Alexander feels familiar owes to the simple fact biology makes certain aspects of adolescence universal. That said, while all human beings go through (suffer?) adolescence, whether it’s recognized as a “stage of life” depends on place and era. Does X culture have an adolescent moratorium, or time period between childhood and adulthood when teens are not (yet) saddled with the full responsibilities of adulthood?

Ancient Greece did, at least for some classes; they even had a specialized term: ephebe/έφηβος. Later, it came to signify a specific military class for training (18-20), but originally, it just meant a teenage boy, although the start age was imagined as later, more like 15+. Up to that, the generic pais (child) was more common. Ephebe has the implication of “starting to look like a man.”

Of more import, they invented what’s become the Western pedagogical system. The word pedagogy is GREEK: pais (child) agōgē (guiding/training): a paidagōgos was a nanny, but also a method of teaching children. The specific Spartan schooling system is referred to as the Agōgē, but the word has a generic meaning too. All of that is related to the Greek word for “work” (agōn) but also “to lead” (egōn).

There’s your Greek lesson for the day.

The Greeks had a pretty firm idea of the proper way to train up boys* and shape young minds. By the Classical era, and arguably the late Archaic, city Greeks were sending boys between the ages of 7 and 12 to school. These were private, so parents paid for the privilege of getting junior out of the house so somebody else could run herd on him. Mom and Dad had work to do. What were boys taught? The Three Rs (reading, writing, and ‘rithmatic) but also phys-ed (PE) and music. Again, the basics of a proper European primary-school education.

At 12, most boys returned home to take up their father’s occupation. So these were not all wealthy boys. Some were what we’d call middle class, but their families had enough money to invest in their education, and then, as now, the pricier the tuition, the better the teachers. But most stopped on the cusp of adolescence and went to work; they had no adolescent moratorium.

Only the wealthiest boys could afford to go on to what amounted to secondary education: lessons with a philosopher in order to prep them for their future careers as politicians, generals, and city leaders. What they learned now were rhetoric, eristics (art of argument), some literature, laws, theory on government, etc.

This higher-level tutoring is what Aristotle was hired for. Alexander (and friends) had already had the basics. A “philosophic education” had been around for over a century by the time Philip called Aristotle to Pella, although it wasn’t as set in form as it would become by the Hellenistic and Roman eras. In some of his more famous works, such as the Politics, Aristotle talks about the importance of education in the formation of a state: specifically in Book 7.18, and most of Book 8. He gets very specific in Book 8. He puts forward a number of common ideas the ancients had about the nature of the child. Most believed character was unchanging, so education would work to curb a person’s vices and elevate their virtues.

The Greeks, btw, did not invent schools themselves. Egyptians and Mesopotamians both had schools for children before the Greeks did. Greeks got the idea from them. But they did create their own notion of what school should include, which is what they passed down to the Romans, then to Europe, and finally, to most school systems in the West.

Anyway, when a culture introduces the adolescent moratorium, it frees up teenagers to, well, do “stupid teen shit.” Schools provide an environment where they create their own society with their own rules. In cultures where they begin adult jobs at 12/13 (or even sooner), they��re integrated and don’t have the chance to create these little sub-societies that percolate with all the drama of wildly pumping hormones.

So, a society that creates an environment where groups of teens regularly congregate in disproportionate numbers to either adults or children, like secondary school, squire/military, maid, or scribal training--or the Macedonian Pages Corps--will feel familiar to modern societies that have high schools.

Put a bunch of teens together, suffering through adolescence, and it’ll produce similar results anywhere, any time.

Is it specific how old Nezha is in Investiture of the Gods?

That aside: in the novel, Nezha is said to be 7 years old when he killed Ao Bing and the Yaksha...and also 6 ft tall. (FSYY's sense of scale is really weird, like all old novels).

Post-resurrection, he is said to be "1 Zhang and 6 Chi" in height, which roughly converts to 16-18ft. Nothing suggests that said body still looks like a 7-years-old's, though.

I don't think it's totally unreasonable to argue that the doubling in height means his new body is an older/adult one in appearance. Or, more likely, beyond the concept of "adult" or "child" altogether, and has more in common with a wrathful guardian deity than any regular humans.

There is also nothing in FSYY that suggests his psychological a/o physical growth stopped or slowed down after that, btw. And Nezha didn't immediately join the War of Investiture after his resurrection, a bunch of events transpired in the middle (mostly King Zhou being a dick) while the Li family basically waited by the wayside.

Depending on how long it took for all that stuff to go down, psychologically, he could be anywhere from a young teen to a young adult when he was sent to rescue Huang Feihu.

As for how old he might be at the end of the novel? The whole story of FSYY lasted at least 28 years, from the Simp Poem Incident to King Zhou's death, though the actual fighting part probably took less than 2 decades,

And coming up with a timeline for a God-Demon novel that isn't interested in chronological consistencies at all is...just beyond me. As for my personal HC, I think psychologically, Nezha was at least in his late 20s/early 30s when the War of Investiture was over.

I started Reading Ms Marvel!

Kamala Khan is such a fun character! My first introduction to her was actually through the avenger’s game. (Unfortunately while the campaign started really fun, the gameplay itself turned rather sour fast. I wish this was just single player without the boring bullshit..)

As I expected, the comic itself is really fun. Imagine growing up with this series, it really feels like a story intended for a new generation and its just really good.

The artwork and writing are topnotch. And it’s really exciting!

I personally kinda get bored if all MC’s are the same. Kamala may be a Teen girl, but she’s not the average character that we tend to hear about. Most stories I grew up with are just about white teen boys with.. Super intelligence. How am I supposed to relate to super intelligence? lol.

When you see a character make mistakes, or go through awkward things.. Fandoms.. Socializing. Struggling with societal expectations. Even if I don’t directly relate to Kamala’s personal struggles, I do feel a sort of kinship. Empathy.

Childhood is difficult. But how many heroes are there you really feel some shared struggles with? Feeling as if you have to change to fit in.. I think all teenagers can relate to that. From whatever generations. Even adults.

‘‘Ugnhn I don’t wanna read about a muslim girl, bluh bluh’‘ Makes you sound really boring and racist.. Often when cultural parts are strung into a character’s background, its just represented just as much as it would be for the average person. 

An European character would have European heritage or history be hinted at, or certain cursewords and phrases. Religion, food, clothes. That’s just as much as you get from Kamala’s heritage. It’s not that weird that people have different cultures and backgrounds. I don’t want to read about the same kinds of characters all the time.

I just wish more people understood the beauty of culture. But no, they want copypasta characters. Always straight, always perfect, always men with 1000000 girlfriends. ‘’True Alpha’s’’ BORING.

(It’s also funny how often the characters they use as their perfecto manhood examples are the exact opposite of what they think they are... Like Deadpool.. Lol. Or Wolverine. Did you know Star-lord is Bisexual and never actually dates Gamora in the comics??)

I’m a gay guy. I like reading about female characters that aren’t set in the ‘’male gaze’’ I’m tired of looking for movie and the second a woman comes into focus, you just know that’s the love interest and that there’s gonna be an extremely awkward sex scene that’s somehow fit for 13+.

I Try to Read stories that are about different kinds of people. If you don’t grow up with diversity, you don’t really always understand it. Unfortunately that’s how education goes. If you just want to complain and not give something a chance because you think ‘’ít’s not for me because its about a person of color’’ then you’ve got a nugget of a brain that can’t absorb cool stories. 

The coolest stories? The coolest stories aren’t about ‘’the guy that is perfect and gets what he wants and is totally not flawed’’ Where’s the struggle? Where’s the heritage? Where’s the emotional baggage? Where’s the character growth? 

Where are the things my history teacher didn’t talk about?

Diversity matters.

Kamala Khan’s polymorph powers are super cool btw. 

Just wish they weren’t making her cosmic nr 2 in the disney+ show. I’m personally worried its going to make people feel distanced once they read her actual comic or watch her on the animated series. If they end up transferring that power change to the comic, I think a bunch of the old fans will be really sad.

Another Theory I have is that due the whole ‘’cosmic item’’ hints (shang-chi’s after credit scene is an example) At a likely big event plot in regards to multiple items. Perhaps in the guardians vol 3 we’ll see a Nova Helmet, or the Cosmic Seed. We’ve already seen the ebony blade at the end of the celestials- But i’m not sure if it counts as cosmic. As for Moonknight, perhaps there’s another object of interest there as well? (No spoilers pls.)

If Kamala’s powers are bound to the object, (In the comics its just a family heirloom she wears?) then losing the object would mean she would lose the ability to use them. This could perhaps set up ‘’lost my powers’’ plot, but eventually introduce the inhuman somehow (after we get the x-men first) and then do the terrigen mist plot to have Kamala actually become who she is.

An inhuman superhero!

Top Albums of 2020

I was tagged by the amazing @joonni to list my top nine twelve albums of 2020! This was honestly so hard, but so fun. I love any tags to do with music xD (Your music taste was amazing btw! Sorry I went a little crazy and did a few extra lol.) Thanks lovie 💓

I went with the albums that I loved as whole (aka I loved most, if not all, of the songs) and listened to the most this year. Some choices have deeper meanings, while others were just flat-out enjoyable. I also stuck with albums that came out this year only, but I wasn’t sure if that was inherently part of the challenge. I wasn’t too picky on the criteria, just went with the ones that made up the score for my 2020. All albums have Spotify links incase something catches your eye! (Apologies for my extra-ness; I added recommendations from each album and a brief...ish explanation as to why it made the list.)

Also, they’re in no particular order, because this was difficult enough...

Map of the Soul: 7 by BTS

Explanation — This album was my first comeback as part of the BTS Army. There are so many tracks that I adore, and I honestly can’t remember the last time I was so excited for music. It breathed life into my Spotify, it was the album I listened to the most this year, and Black Swan was my most listened song. The differing music genres that they played with, all the way from orchestral to trap to hip hop and synth pop, left me more and more excited as the songs progressed. If there was a #1 on this list, it would be MOTS:7.

Highlights — Interlude: Shadow, Black Swan, ON, We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal

Zero: Fever Part.1 by Ateez

Explanation — This was the soundtrack to my summer. I hadn’t heard much from Ateez, but what I had heard, I wasn’t a huge fan of? Maybe I hadn’t been grabbed yet, but oh boy. Zero: Fever definitely did that. Every track is such high energy and memorable, so it was so hard to pick favorites! I’ll always think back on this one for summer, and will be transported back to plenty of sunset commutes.

Highlights — Fever, Thanxx, One Day At A Time

The Dream Chapter: Eternity by Tomorrow x Together

Explanation — Until this mini album, I had only listened to TXT in passing. I liked their stuff, but I feel like this is where they really found their stride. TDC:E caught me totally off-guard, in the best way possible. To me at least, this one is a work of art. Each of the six tracks is so entrancing, and so different from each other while still working together as a cohesive story. And don’t even get me started on the MVs! This is an album that I listen to for feels and fun, which to me, TXT are just brilliant at. 

Highlights — Fairy of Shampoo, Maze in the Mirror, Eternally

Dystopia: The Tree of Language by Dreamcatcher

Explanation — It took me forever to find a girl group that I could really stan, like hardcore. This comeback for Dreamcatcher was when I realized they were it for me. This album in particular is so diverse. Their voices are both haunting and beautiful, and the way they interweave rock/alternative elements into their music has always turned my ear. They are so different from so many other girl groups out there, from the sound to their stage presence to their aesthetic. I will never stop talking about them, and this album really shows the best of their work thus far.

Highlights — Red Sun, Sahara, Paradise

BE by BTS

Explanation — How could BE not be on this list? What a perfect end to a shitty year. There’s something so comforting yet uplifting about this one, and I will happily admit I cried when I first heard Blue & Grey. Who am I kidding, I still do. There’s only one other artist I have listed on here with two albums, so BTS is in good company. What more is there to say other than BE was the warm hug we all needed.

Highlights — Life Goes On, Blue & Grey, Dis-ease, Stay

Heng:garae by Seventeen

Explanation — This is another group that I hadn’t listened to much before this album. I was so surprised and excited. Every song that passed, I found myself smiling more. Their voices are astoundingly beautiful, and the songs are sickeningly catchy. Another album that I go to just to have fun. It’s one of my favorites to just put on when a day is good, but doesn’t Seventeen make it a little better regardless?

Highlights — Fearless, Kidult, I Wish, Together

The Untamed by various

Explanation — If you’ve seen the Chinese drama The Untamed, then you know exactly why this is on there. This album is a collection of songs that are themes for the characters in the show, most of which are sung by the actors themselves. Let me tell you; I don’t know a lick of Mandarin, but these are some of the most stunning songs I’ve ever heard. It’s one of the things that drew me to the drama to begin with; everything, including the music, is breathtaking. The classical Chinese sound plays so well with the character’s stories and singer’s vocals. They tell stories all on their own and give the drama so much depth. Even if you’re not a fan of the show or webtoon it’s based on, give this one a listen. You won’t be disappointed!

Humanity (Chapters I & II) by Thomas Bergersen

Explanation — If you know anything about me, you know how important orchestral music is to me. It’s been a huge part of my music journey ever since I was in middle school. Thomas Bergersen has been my favorite composer for years; the way he integrates the classical with the modern is just...there are no words. These two albums cannot be listed separately; they’re part of a seven-part project titled Humanity. Chapters I & II came out in 2020, and honestly, I have no words. The way he tells a story through almost entirely lyric-less work is just immaculate. I’ve never felt more powerful, emotional, or inspired than when listening to these two. I cried when I first heard Your Imagination and Materialize. No matter how I am feeling, whether I need inspiration or hope or just some peace of mind, I go here. I’ve never felt more healed than when listening to his work. If you take a chance to listen to anything on this list, PLEASE. Give these a try.

Brightest Blue by Ellie Goulding

Explanation — I don’t listen to a ton of western music that isn’t orchestral or lofi, but I used to adore Ellie Goulding. Halcyon was my entire teen-hood. When I saw she came out with a new album this year, I gave it a listen for sentimentality reasons. And boy, I still love her. Her voice is both angelic and haunting, and her sound is so unique. The messages given in these songs are powerful, potent, a tad bit bittersweet, and especially valid for young women navigating adult life. Also the instrumentals backing her vocals are often big and grand and symphonic, filled with piano and violin. That’s enough to get me to listen. And to top it all off, the collabs she has on this album are so fitting for each track, it’s absolutely beautiful.

Highlights — Start, Cyan, Ode To Myself, Woman, Flux, Overture, Slow Grenade, Hate Me

Beneath Your Waves by Sleepy Fish

Explanation — If there’s one kind of music that shuts off the little anxiety bug in my brain and gets me to work, one that isn’t as intense as orchestral music and that doesn’t put me into sensory overload like orchestral sometimes does, it’s lofi. And Sleepy Fish does it so freakin’ well. This album that came out this year is one of my most often repeated over and over. When I’m struggling with sensory issues at work, I put this one repeat and my mind just...goes...quiet. It’s like medicine. And the tunes are so catchy and sweet. I’m instantly transported to someplace magical, some seaside city straight out of a Ghibli film, and far away from the things that are troubling me. Then I can finally get some work done, get to sleep, or just quiet my mind. If you struggle with sensory issues or anxiety like I do, give this album a shot. Also, the album titled My Room Becomes The Sea from 2019 is excellent.

Highlights — Velocities, Sunbreak, Swimming, Nights Like These, Winter Winter

WOOPS! by Woodz

Explanation — Another mini album that is just a blast to listen to, but it also has such a soft side that hits me in the feels. I don’t see a lot of people talking about Woodz, but you all should give him a listen. He’s so talented, and his voice on this one is just *chef’s kiss* everything. The mixing is also impeccable and pairs so well with his vocals.

Highlights — Bump Bump, On my own, Sweater, Tide

D-2 by Agust D

Explanation — I mean, we all knew this one was gonna be dope. Yoongi did not disappoint. This mixtape is so different from most of the stuff I listen to, but I absolutely adored it. The truth and rhythm and pure talent in each and every verse stuns me still. I find myself especially drawn to this one when I’m frustrated (not exclusively, but often, ‘cause 2020.) Both his truth and sound give me a safe place to feel that frustration and anxiety and vent/work through it. I don’t know what it is about Yoongi, but to me, all of his work is like a comforting friend going, “Hey, you’re totally valid and okay for feeling this way...but it sucks, doesn’t it?”

honestly I started wanting to sort of continue writing it as a middle finger to Miss Saigon-

(the musical. not the actual Miss Saigon, I want to make it clear that my issues are with the freaking musical I hate it so much aaa-)

(let’s just say that despite it being a musical about South Vietnam, they sold Ho Chi Minh/Vietcong flags as merchandise and wHAT THE HOLY FUDGE-)

So basically a few other things I planned out is “trà sữa boba” which is either gonna be the chapter title/a song name... idk why but I sort of want to write it in music form now- but basically trà sữa boba translates to “boba milk tea” and basically, the boba place where linh and renn meet is basically the hangout place for the the vietnamese high schoolers. and like, one day linh and renn are hanging out there again, and they’re sitting at a table together and chatting while linh reads a college ap textbook she borrowed from the library to prepare for scibowl (this is projecting my friend onto linh here-)

and so then we meet renn’s friend, aiden, the resident awesome non-binary gay who works the counter at the boba place every day after school (their dad is the manager). and Aiden is all “emmm oiiiiiii come here and help meee” to which Renn shoots back “I’m not your em-“

(em is the honorific for people younger than you but old enough to be your sibling/younger sibling)

so Aiden just comes back with “oh my bad, ba già” which basically means old lady, and linh goes pfffft and is trying not to laugh, which leads to Aiden and linh talking and introducing themselves and like Aiden is low key platonically flirting, and then suddenly renn is jealous but confused because she doesn’t. like linh that much. so why-?

then Aiden has to go take someone’s order, and they’re alone again. and linh notices Renn angrily sipping her boba, and is like “are you jealous?” and renn almost dies until she finds out Linh thinks that she has a crush on Aiden and now Renn is half-dying for many reasons 

so they just keep chilling until Renn notices Aiden literally arranging mint leaves into a heart before placing the order down in front of this other guy (Kendrick) (whom Aiden ded has a crush on) and so obviously Renn teases him and asks why Aiden never gives her a little mint heart, which leads to linh making a comment as to how there seems to be a community of its own at the tea shop. so this transitions into more of the regulars entering the boba shop and a general vibe of we all know each other, and found family babyyyyy (also I present to you “plus we’ve got nhiều người bê đê / hell yeah we’re here to stay / let’s all reclaim the name / be proud of our ways” and basically nhiều người bê đê means lots of gays aha- and bê đê means gay but it’s often used in a derogatory way so yeah-)

then that transitions into “the other Vietnamese culture club,” because basically all of the regulars are viet kids who aren’t a part of the viet culture club (which Linh is the president of) at the high school for various reasons, such as not fitting in/not being “nerdy” enough aka this is basically the self-established viet teens gsa, and Linh gets roped into their meetings, where she’s like oh no. is there member confidentiality?? and renn is like relax I haven’t been outed yet, you won’t be either and then suddenly goes. shoot did I just come out to linh and why do I care so much? meanwhile linh is like oh gosh does she know?? and why am I slightly happy by the fact that she like girls too?? what is going on??

haha yeah- might actually. write this somehow. One day. :3

“Buona fortuna” dice lei solamente, senza nessuna particolare inflazione della voce, perché sanno entrambi quanto Marco sia timido. Sospira e la ringrazia. Avrà molto bisogno di fortuna.

Il secondo è un tassorosso del settimo anno che Ermal ha sempre guardato da lontano ed ammirato per il suo essere così... bello. 

Gli si avvicina e un po’ gli tremano le ginocchia ad averlo di fronte. Si vergogna e si appoggia alla scopa con disagio, la divisa da Quidditch di serpeverde zuppa di sudore. “Ciao, Fabrizio” lo saluta, mentre i suoi compagni di casa e squadra lo superano e lo prendono in giro.

Fabrizio sorride e davvero, non è giusto essere così belli.

“Mi chiedevo se ti andasse di venire al Ballo del Ceppo con me” chiede semplicemente l’altro, mettendosi le mani in tasca, abbassando un po’ la testa, rivelandosi più timido di quanto Ermal credesse

“Io...” balbetta, leccandosi le labbra nervoso “Mi dispiace”

“No, non fa niente” replica Fabrizio, mettendo una mano avanti e sorridendogli “sai qualcun’altro a cui potrei chiederlo?”

“Oh” è sorpreso e anche un po’ offeso. Sperava che un po’ se la sarebbe presa “La mia migliore amica non ha ancora un... date?” azzarda, chiedendosi se Fabrizio sappia cosa voglia dire, dato che per fama sa che è uno di quelli che Piton prende sempre di mira per l’inglese e che si fa scrivere i temi dai suoi compagni di casa più generosi

Fabrizio fa un espressione pensierosa per un secondo, poi gli dà una pacca sul braccio “Vabbé, ce provo... speramo non me dà picche anche lei, no? Grazie. Ce vedemo, regazzi” dice poi, dandogli un buffetto anche sulla guancia 

Rimane per un po’ a guardarlo andare via, confuso

Il terzo glielo chiede proprio davanti a Marco. E ad Annalisa. E a tutto il corridoio del secondo piano, perché Francesco Gabbani, grifondoro del sesto anno, cosa sia il pudore non lo ha ben capito

“Meta! Vieni al ballo con me?” chiede, correndogli incontro con il suo miglior sorriso da marpione, la cravatta messa in testa come in Karate Kid

Ermal guarda prima Marco che si guarda i piedi e poi Annalisa che rotea gli occhi al cielo

“No, mi spiace, Francesco. Voglio andare con qualcuno che mi interessi davvero” specifica, sperando che Marco capisca che quel qualcuno è lui

spoiler: non lo capisce e continua a guardarsi i piedi, rosso come un peperone

“Ok” dice Gabbani, girandosi verso Annalisa “Scarrone, tu invece...” 

“Scordatelo, Gabbani”

“Montanari?”

Marco alza la testa e lo guarda stupito, diventando ancora più rosso. “Vorrei chiederlo a qualcun’altro. Appena trovo il coraggio”

Ermal panica. Annalisa eyerolla talmente tanto che le vengono le zampe di gallina in anticipo di quarant’anni. Gabbani scrolla le spalle, dicendo “Sbrigati, prima che lo faccia qualcun’altro” e poi si rivolge ad una ragazza di Beuxbatons che sta passando accanto a loro in quel momento. “Mademoiselle, voulez vous coucher avec moi à le Yule Ball?”

“Francesco” cerca di avvisarlo Ermal, ma la ragazza fa un verso sgomento e poi lo schiaffeggia, prima di andare via indignata

“Ma che ho detto?” chiede confuso l’altro, tenendosi la guancia, per poi voltarsi verso un altro ragazzo di Beuxbatons “Garçon, voulez vous coucher avec moi à le Yule Ball?” Il tipo lo guarda, scrolla le spalle...

“Oui, pourquoi pas?” Francesco si volta a guardarli “Oui è sì, vero?” e quando annuiscono torna a sorridere al giovane francese. “Merci very much, ma cher. C’est magnifique” poi li guarda, facendo loro l’occhiolino. “Nailed it” sussurra, andando via con il francese 

Anche al quarto invito indesiderato Marco è presente, anche se un po’ più lontano e probabilmente non sente nulla

Ermal è nella sala comune di grifondoro, a fare un po’ di compagnia a Rinald, quando davanti a loro si siede Andrea Vigentini che lo guarda con una serietà che ad Ermal fa spavento e d’istinto si gira a guardare in direzione di Marco, che distoglie lo sguardo abbassando il capo e arrossendo 

“Ermalvorrestivenirealballoconme?” chiede Andrea, tutto d’un fiato ed è Rinald a rispondere “Eh?”

Andrea fa un respiro profondo “Ermal, mi chiedevo se tu...”

Lo ferma subito. “Mi dispiace, Andrea, ma... vado già con...” ci pensa e non sa cosa dire, venendo salvando soltanto dalla cocente delusione che si forma sul viso di Andrea, mentre pigola un “oh, fa niente dai. Sarà per la prossima volta”

Non sa perché lo fa, davvero, ma “Rinald non ha ancora un accompagnatore, però”

“ERMAL” si lamenta l’altro, imbarazzato, mentre Andrea pigola un alto piccolo “oh” voltandosi verso il più piccolo dei fratelli Meta. “Ti andrebbe di...”

“Ok, sì. Ma solo perché nessuno ancora non me l’ha chiesto e ho paura di perdermelo” spiega, con il broncio, dato che lui è del secondo anno e i ragazzi così piccoli non possono partecipare se non invitati 

“Va bene. Perfetto” risponde Andrea, per poi alzarsi senza aggiungere altro, mentre Rinald gli pesta il piede indignato “Tu sei coglione”

Ma Ermal non lo ascolta. è troppo impegnato a fissare Marco che ancora fa finta di nulla. “Perché non mi inviti ancora, cazzo?” pensa, desiderando di essere un legimante per poter capire cosa diavolo ha in testa Marco

Il quinto invito è probabilmente il più difficile da rifiutare, sia per la poca pazienza nei confronti del ritardo di Marco, sia per il soggetto in questione

Che quando si siede al tavolo al quale Ermal sta studiando con Annalisa, gli fa andare la saliva di traverso per la sorpresa

La saliva di traverso non va a Fabrizio, seduto con loro a fingere di studiare per far contenta il suo date (come si diverte a chiamarla credendo che sia chissà che dolce epiteto in inglese), che subito la saluta

“Ciao, Fabrizio” replica lei, sorridendo (ed Ermal è sicuro che stia sorridendo e dio, quanto ama il suo sorriso, ci ha scritto una canzone che Marco adora e dio, Marco. Marco che ancora non lo invita. Marco che gli piace da impazzire ed è il suo migliore amico ed è timido e codardo e per niente grifondoro e che cavolo ci fa in quella Casa? Marco che porca troia e se non lo ricambiasse? E se si fosse sognato tutti gli sguardi e le toccatine strategiche e la sintonia che avverte tra di loro? Marco che probabilmente non lo vuole e che cazzo però)

“Lei è Annalisa, la mia ragazza” dice Fabrizio, per poi proseguire con “e lui è...” ignorando completamente il “Non sono la tua ragazza, Mobrici” di Annalisa

“So chi è” lo interrompe la ragazza, sorridendo ancora “Sono qui per lui in realtà. Ermal...” lo chiama e lui deve guardarla e dio, Marco glielo chiederà, deve chiederglielo per forza “So che è un po’ strano, visto che sono una ragazza, ma dato che sembrava che tu non me l’avresti mai chiesto” e ridacchia e che risata ha? Troppo bella per essere vera “verresti al ballo con me?”

“Silvia...” balbetta, guardandola triste “Mi dispiace...”

C’è un motivo per cui Ermal ha passato tutto l’anno precedente a sbavare su Silvia Notargiacomo. O, meglio, ce ne sono mille. è bellissima, biondissima, divertentissima e... buonissima. Quindi non se la prende e va via con lo stesso sorriso con cui è arrivata.

Sorriso che non trova sul viso irritato di Annalisa e su quello confuso di Fabrizio.

“Ermal, una domanda... perché diavolo non lo chiedi tu a Marco?” gli domanda Annalisa ed Ermal non riesce nemmeno a guardarla in faccia

Ora. Ermal non chiederà mai a Marco di andare al ballo per motivi che non staremo qui ad elencare e che si riassumono con il fatto che Ermal non ha mai chiesto a nessuno di uscire. Ed ha passato la maggior parte del suo tempo ad Hogwarts in completa solitudine, se non fosse stato per un incontro fortuito in un bagno in disuso alcuni mesi prima. Quindi, le relazioni sociali sono un mistero per lui. E se sa come accettare e come rifiutare, non riesce a chiedere. E poi è orgoglioso, tanto orgoglioso. ed è Marco, santo dio. Marco. E andiamo!

Insomma, basic!Ermal being Ermal

Ma Fabrizio è di tutt’altra pasta. Lui non comprende l’orgoglio di Ermal e non comprende nemmeno la timidezza di Marco. Fabrizio è un essere umano a 360°. Un animale sociale. Lui ha più amici che cellule nervose. Avrà adottato mezza Hogwarts, professori compresi. Ed ha adottato Ermal da quando ha deciso di dividere la custodia dei suoi figli con Annalisa

Inoltre, non è una ragazza. Quindi quando Annalisa gli parla di girls code e di segreti e tutte quelle puttanate alla Sleepover Club, lui non capisce bene di cosa sia parlando. Anche perché la sua non-ragazza, all’in fuori di Ermal e di quel spilugone troppo cresciuto di Michele Bravi, non ha amici. E nessuno dei due è una ragazza. Quindi girls code cosa esattamente?

Quindi, capirete bene che anche il buon Bizio si comporta da basic!Bizio. E al buon Bizio è impossibile non fare del bene. Quindi va da Marco.

E per adesso è tutto! La seconda parte arriverà a breve. So che c’è voluto del tempo e me ne dispiaccio, ma ho preparato un esame da cui sono fuggita senza nemmeno provarlo ed ho dovuto affrontare la consapevolezza di doverlo (ri)dare a breve. Settembre fa schifo. Non date mai esami a settembre, sentite a me. 

Ma parliamo di cose belle e cioè che non si capisce nulla di ciò che ho scritto! è la mia prima cosa a punti e non cosa sia venuto fuori. So che ci sono inoltre cose che non sono molto chiare, ma ho praticamente preso un au sviluppata con Milena e ho sostituito la metamoro & kose con la metanari soft. In pratica, gli antefatti e il world building (perché ho fatto world building per questa cosa) sono gli stessi, solo che anziché combinare disastri vari, Ermal e Marco sono incapaci di invitarsi l’un l’altro al Ballo del Ceppo (che sì, è il Ballo del Ceppo del 1994, nel Torneo Tremaghi che ha visto partecipare Harry Potter. Più che un’au questo è un crossover, ma vbb)

Insomma, spero che questa prima parte vi sia piaciuta! Nei prossimi giorni dovrebbe arrivare la seconda. Nel frattempo se avete domande, curiosità, commenti, insulti, non esitate a farne :)

I LOVE U AHAHA i’m glad u worked out!! we love to see it, idk about u but i feel so much better after i’m done working out! i went for a morning walk today too and i’m gonna do my squats soon as i shit out my morning coffee bc that shit was BUBBLING in my stomach and needs to be let out asap 💀 PLS my friend is adorable i love them heaps and also my melbourne friends pls 🥺🥺 i miss them bc of this fuckin lockdown and border closure, i miss having study/gossip sessions at my apartment and i’d feed them random snacks i’d get from daiso like i’d send them pics in the gc saying “guys these are this week’s snacks bc we’ve never tried them before!” and they’d text the gc back like “oh can’t wait!! it looks good!” anyways, i haven’t told u my fav book so don’t fret! uhhh i have a bunch tbh i can’t pick one! i like the little prince by antoine de saint-exupéry, the book thief by markus zusak, my most recent fav is station 11 by emily st. john mandel, read that in 2020, peak lockdown book highly recommend! my fav short story is the yellow wallpaper by charlotte perkins gilman and tbh there’s heaps more but those are what i can think of and also i recommend them all if they ever sound good to u 👀 omg i relate to seeing a really good show that hits you so intensely in the feels, i’ll have to give it a watch sometime, but i’m in a big reading mood so i’m gonna take advantage of that first! Ah i think it’s just cos I was on my period and like idk just wasn’t feeling good but I watched the new marvel movie yesterday (Shang-Chi) and it was sooo good like the females owned me wow beautiful immaculate 🥰 but yeah maybe I need to eat more too cos I’m eating as much from being tired

My movie weekend. 

I saw Plan B at home in the wee hours of...Saturday morning, around 1am? maybe 12:30?

Went to the Autry Museum to see Gas Food Lodging at like 1:30 in the afternoon. The director was there and the Q&A was really good. The fairly packed crowd, all wearing masks consistently which was nice, asked good questions! So it was a neat Q&A. Learned that in the original novel that there were three kids in the story and the writer-director was like gotta lose one of the kids lol. And recommended to screenwriters in the audience that like triangle situations are good for drama,   like for this movie,  the dynamics between the lead character the young middle teen girl,  her slightly older sister, and her mother was the crux of the movie. \

I really liked the movie btw,   it wasn’t like a strict Hollywood narrative movie but it also wasn’t totally like overly arty experimental either, very handheld and raw and funny at times. I remember complaining about Plan B that the parents were way too understanding and there wasn’t enough yelling between the teens and parents in that movie, I got my fill with this movie. There was like one scene where the slightly teen girl came home late, the mother isn’t happy, there’s a bit of a back and forth, then the older teen goes to in the restroom, and they’re still arguing! I felt at home in this world lol. The scene awkwardly in a good way went longer than most of those kind of scenes usually go on for which I appreciated! 

Like that scene took me back to all the bickering I had had with my parents, along with the ones I overheard my sis had had with my parents. Good times! Like you start arguing about the initial thing of being late but then other stuff sometimes comes out too, especially if you have teens with tongues like me and my sis,   like man,  sometimes looking back,  we just weren’t kids that would accept just getting yelled at lol. At some point, around 11 maybe? I think kids start talking back and it’s rarely good because as an older person reflecting,  like you’re not experienced enough to really fight back with your folks but if you’re also young and reactive so you gotta say something and hope it sticks and hurts lol. 

I don’t know why I’m harping on this but I remember in Plan B,   there was like a classic 90′s TV show scene where a girl came home late (that’s the whole movie!) and she’s sort of confronted by the mom when she got home,   there’s not much of a back and forth and at the end, the girl is more upset at her mom and she gets in the last word and walks away. The mother just stood there for a while until the next scene where she goes to her her daughter’s bedroom and they hash it out. I don’t know, I’m not a parent lol but I’m still not convinced a mother, especially an immigrant mother,  would let their daughter do that do them, get the last word and walk away from them. I also don’t see how that’s a good thing,   like shouldn’t the more ideal thing be that they just talk it out then there? idk. Gas Food Lodging does a bit of it too, as my parents and many others,  where you do let the parties calm down after a fight and then talk it out better. idk. That whole bit just seemed too rush and that so bothered me that the mom just stood there. 

Anyways,  I liked Gas Food Lodging!

After the movie,  I decided to get my iPhone fixed,   I needed a new battery and a glass replacement and I found a dude in Los Feliz who gave me a deal to do both for a really good price. And he was fast about it too which was neat. I really might give that dude a yelp review and I don’t think I’ve done that before,  as of day 2, the service was really that good. I think I’ll wait a week though to make sure the phone keeps working. (Knock on wood it is so far)

I had planned to get something to eat then go to the Landmark in West LA to see Language Lessons,   but I wound up just going straight to the Landmark from Los Feliz and eating there which was alright because they had like Hebrew Nationals. Pretty good dog imo. Popcorn was so-so but whatever, that’s fine. 

I liked Language Lessons even though I could see why other people wouldn’t like it, the whole movie is done by zoom chats and like phone video messages by the two lead characters. A guy gets signed up for like online Spanish lessons and because and he and his Spanish teacher are vibing each other, the lessons don’t go in a formal way, they have like more free forming conversations in mostly Spanish and she corrects his Spanish when she feels needed, or when he asks if he’s saying something correctly. It’s neat, the whole first part was pretty long which was nice, to just have scenes play themselves out. Then as the movie goes on rough stuff happens to each character and they continue with their Spanish lessons thing. 

The dramatic stakes just keep getting raised as the movie goes on which teetered on going overboard with trying to make a clear story out of the film but I was fine with it and obviously,  I won’t spoil the ending but I totally dug that ending too even though it’s kind of hokey. Sometimes I’m fine with hoke and schmaltz!

At the Q&A,   the writer-director Natalie Morales, who was also the Spanish teacher,  said the film was shot last year, had some improv but not too much and interestingly she said she was kind of inspired by some of the bad directors she had worked with (didn’t name) throughout her acting career. She was like if they can do it,  she could certainly do it too and she encouraged other artists to like to press on with their passions because even if you suck,  you might inspire good work too. Something like that. I appreciated that honestly I feel like that’s a real thing being inspired by stuff that doesn’t impress you where you think you could do it better. 

So that was neat.    

Then,  I walked to the blue line on Pico, took the blue line train to the red line in downtown LA and that lead me to Hollywood and my last two movies of Saturday/Sunday.

It was a part of a film festival and the movies started after midnight, my first midnight movie in like over two years! 

The first movie was a short film that was a sci fi experimental satire thing that got into social media influencers (I think?) and I couldn’t get into it. It was a little too offbeat for me but I did think it was neat that the movie was shot by iPhones and it looked alright. 

The second movie was the Alternate, a sci fi thriller feature that I really dug. A would-be young filmmaker finds out about like a loop thing from his computer,  that allows him, if he goes into the loop thing to go into an “alternate” world where “he’s” a successful filmmaker and his girlfriend is now his wife, they have a nice home and a daughter. A pretty good life. It’s not entirely clear early on why the young filmmaker keeps wanting to go back into this “alternate” world but as the movie goes on that becomes clearer and darker. It’s a really good trippy movie. 

At the Q&A,  I didn’t think of my question until near the end of the sessions and I didn’t get to ask my question which stunk lol.

So that was that, then the real fun happened which was me trying to get home at 2am. I missed my first bus which stunk because the subway was closed so I couldn’t do subway then Lyft. And Lyft/Uber from Hollywood to home was out of the question because that would’ve costed like $70+! So I spent most of my time, waiting for the bus and walking back and forth to the closest 7-11′s that I knew in Hollywood and they were both closed! I didn’t know they did that! 

Anyways,  that was a wild time,  almost everyone I encountered was not sober in some way or another. I was also surprised at how many people were awake at almost 3am too. Just wild, wild stuff. 

I finally made it home at like just before 4am. One cute thing that happened as I went to my room was the yorkie left his bed to see me. I didn’t pet him, I don’t know why but I was tired and he was probably tired too,   I had thought he needed to pee but I think he was concerned that I was gone for so long. It was so funny,  he saw me, shook his tail, did a little stretch, then I asked him if he needed to pee and he didn’t even acknowledge I had said something, and he just walked back to his bed to go to sleep. Love that dog.

AND THEN,  on Sunday, yesterday,  I went to the Grove to meet up with friends to see Shang-Chi which I thought was barely okay. I liked the actors but the story just reminded me of too many other Marvel movies plus the movie was insistent on popping in flashbacks almost every 15 minutes or so. That reminded me of Captain Marvel in particular! (although to be fair,  to that movie they spread out of the flashbacks more but it was still annoying). Non-marvel movie,   Aquaman did that too in possibly the most annoying way. I laughed a few times during the movie BUT there were at least two times where there was an attempt at a funny moment when it was so not needed at all. Marvel loves to pull shit like that. One I will spoil is Shang-Chi is basically doing the first part of his explaining who he really is Awkwafina’s character and like 3/4′s of the way into the flashback, the flashback stops because a stewardess asks them if they wanted to order food. Beef or vegan. They both say vegan. Stewardess says they’re out of a vegan so they say fine, they’ll get beef. And then, I think Shang-Chi went back to his story but to me, that was so unneeded. 

The action was mostly fine but there was also tons of CGI too and it got excessive especially the ending where Shang-Chi almost has nothing to do because of CGI circumstances and I was like lost at what was going on at times. That was so poorly executed. 

Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh were great though. Newcomer Meng'er Zhang was solid. Shang-Chi himself was alright considering like he spends a lot of the movie,   telling stories and kicking ass. He’s very good at the latter. Okay at the other which I mostly blame on the script and story,  he had to do so much exposition yeesh. 

Anyways, so that was my movie weekend.

Today,  I might go with my sister to the Raiders game in Vegas. She’s a Raiders fan and just instantly got the tickets. The funny thing is like three weeks ago or so she got buyers remorse so she’s tried to sell the pair of tickets on some profit and it’s been a challenge because the Raiders are only letting ticket holders who have proof of vaccination to inside the stadium to see the game. I think they’re the only team in the league doing that, it’s like a step above of admission for even most businesses in Los Angeles too including movie theaters. None of the places I went to the movies at required that. 

And if you can believe it,  some football fans are not all-in on getting vaccinated yet so even though,  it’s a home opening game,  it looks like it’s not going to be  a guarantee that it’ll be a packed stadium. As of now they haven’t changed that policy which is interesting to me, obviously my sis would prefer to sell the tickets and make some money off it instead of go, she said she even went under value BUT there still weren’t any takers so it looks like we’re going to the game! Weird stuff. I have the day off and I don’t go into work tomorrow until like 11:45pm. Fun times.
