Self-inserts (long post)
So, since we (you and I, Sam) have discussed this topic, I thought it’d be ✨fun✨ and a bit daredevil-like to publically share my (possibly controversial) opinions on self-inserts in writing, because stirring up shit is my main, if not only, talent in life.
To be entirely honest, I don’t mind self-inserts too much, and I think it’s outright depressing that so many people in the writing community actively shun it. In some ways, I think it carries notions of being hypocritical, because writing a character will always (to an extent) be a reflection or projection of yourself, whether you want to admit it or not. (It’s something else if your self-insert is poorly written, then it’s understandable if there’s a lack of interest in interacting, lol).
But basically, even if someone is writing a canon muse from a fictional world, they cannot convince me, they’re not writing them because they can’t at all somehow relate to, or empathise with whatever version they’ve fabricated of the character in their own mind. Because everything written essentially tells a story about the author too — how they interpret and perceive people with these specific kinds of traits.
Also, if someone claims they’ve never written a character as self-insert at some point in their life, I feel like they’d be lying directly to my face. Because at the center of every piece of writing, there will always be you. It’s inescapable, and as much as someone may wish, anything written by them can never not be detached from their own point of view.
All fictional works are in my opinion self-inserts. Maybe you’re writing a character that you wish to be, or look like. A glorified version of yourself, or you if you were the opposite gender or another ethnicity. You if you were an outlaw or worked in a specific field. You if you were born a high-elf in a magical forest. You if you were athletic or popular etc.
If the written character is not an imaginary, suppressed, selectively isolated or exaggerated part of yourself, then how the fuck would you even be able to write them to begin with? “Oh, but I wouldn’t ever kill anyone like my character!” Babe, I’m sure we’ve all at some point felt like we wanted to bomb society because of all the injustices of this world, or literally been seeing red to the point of wishing to commit unspeakable crimes. (I’m sure if you have siblings or been bullied, you’re familiar with that feeling). It’s just that most people (luckily) have enough self-control to not make that a reality.
If your character kills for fun, and you tell me you’d never do that, let me tell you: During world war II, the Japanese conducted some of the most heinous human experiments heard of in history on Chinese captives. They did that without displaying an ounce of empathy, because they didn’t view them as human, but bugs to play with. It was absolutely horrendous. Anyway, my point is that it’s 100% possible for people to “shut down” the part of their brain that controls empathy, or become brainwashed to the point of believing that people with a specific demography or background aren’t like them. It’s the same kind of mindset that you (or your character) woule be applying here. The direct opposite of having a parasocial relationship, I’d say.
Okay, sorry, that was a sidetrack. Well, personally I support any form of creative self-expression and exploration, whether it be labelled ‘self-insert’ or not. I think it should be celebrated rather than condemned. The main issue that can occur with these ‘self-inserts’, of course, is when people aren’t mature enough to be able to separate ic from ooc interactions, but perhaps the solution to that would be to address such boundaries accordingly. (I guess kind of like when people do aftercare after participating in rough plays in the bedroom, but like the opposite if that makes sense, lmao? Maybe we call it reality check instead, lol).
(But honestly, how many people haven’t fallen in love and become a couple irl, because they started out roleplaying online? Surprisingly, more than you might think! I did a bit of desktop research, and a childhood friend of mine recently disclosed to me that she met her husband through roleplaying as hobby! I was like damn).
Back to the topic of self-inserts. Anyway, please, if you’re someone who view yourself as… I don’t know… superior because you’re supposedly not writing a self-insert, please get down from your high horse, champ. Self-inserts are unavoidable — unpreventable — so stop thinking you’re better. You’re goddamn not, and it clearly suggests an unsupportive attitude and lack of deeper self-awareness.
Aaaaand, now I take a deep breath, because of course, my inner Chiyori is coming out to remind me to display understanding and patience too, because argh, it’s sad that people don’t really know any better — how should they, anyway? I, too, used to be an uninformed sheep who simply followed the herd until I realized how toxic the world we live in still are.

"if you're guilty, i'm guilty ."
Fillory & Further Sentence Starters | Accepting
So rarely, Chiyori would ask anyone of favours, so rarely she’d entrust anyone with herself, let alone the growing struggles that she faced. Calling it a favour, perhaps, was a stretch even, because placing such a responsibility on a 17-year-old boy could hardly be considered a favour in the first place.
In its very own sense, it was probably considered more of a curse than anything else. A burden even, one Chiyori wished she hadn’t felt the need to put onto her kohai. Though, who else existed that could handle it? No one else, Chiyori thought, her inner voice filling with a sense of regret, because ultimately it wasn’t fair. Not to her kohai. Not to anyone.
At Yuuta-kun’s words, Chiyori paused simply, amber gaze shifting downwards, jaw tightening. There was an aura of weariness about her, dark circles under her eyes from the many sleepless nights she’d had to endure; voices and nightmares haunting her like vengeful spirits. She could barely remember the last time she’d had a proper night’s rest.
It’d come to the point, where even in her waking hours, horrid images would flash before her vision. And there were whispers, whispers, whispers in the back of her mind, telling her to give up; to let go control, to release the abominations that she held trapped inside of her very soul like inmates. These days, it barely felt like she could hold onto the tearing ropes that somehow still kept them secured within their confines.
And the sorceress thought about his words for a while, hand tensing around his shoulder from when she’d pushed him against the wall. Guilt. Why had Yuuta-kun had voiced it like that? Like it was some kind of shared feeling between them — as if it was a shared fault when it wasn’t? And she would object to it, vehemently… though didn’t. Didn’t have it in her to argue with his unbending nature right now. Instead, she remained silent. It’d been hard enough to make him promise to do everything in his power to stop her if things ever went out of hand.
Her gaze remained fixed on the ground. Truly, Chiyori didn’t know what to tell him. “I…” She began slowly as she backed away, hand slipping off his shoulder. She wasn’t sure about the appropriate thing to say here — the right thing. Even if she reassured her kohai, it likely wouldn’t make him feel less different, would it? Could she blame him for it even? Not really, she thought, because had Chiyori been in his shoes, she likely would’ve reacted in a similar manner. Then, she lowered her defenses, shoulders dropping in defeat as she whispered: “I’m sorry, Yuuta-kun…” There existed no other real solution to this, did there?

(( Oh yeah, let me know if you want to plot, or discuss dynamics. Chiyori will react differently to situations based on her age. So, if there’s a specific genre we want to write, she can be easily accommodated. ))

"I don't mind pop music," Chiyori returned in earnest, a subtle smile on her lips as she let Jangmi-chan lead the way outside, arm extended in front of her as she followed behind the pinkette. In fact, Chiyori much preferred listening to pop music. Their upbeat songs usually made her feel good and would put her in the mood to dance around. “It has to be good pop music though,” she added then. “Like Taylor Swift or YOASOBI”.
Jangmi laughed softly, shaking her head in a way that said I knew it. "Well~ I like to go to places with pop music, but if that's not your style, just let me know. There are a few different clubs packed in the same area." With a grin, she reached back to grab hold of Chiyori's nearest hand and began to lead the way out of her apartment to the subway station. She flashed Chiyori an expectant look as they walked, hoping she would weigh in on the idea of dancing to pop music all night.

“You were underestimating me, weren’t you?” The half-vampire was sounding surpisingly calm as she glanced down at the hunter. A small pout was visible on her face as she kept him pinned to the ground. She was straddling his lower back, forcibly restraining him by keeping his arms locked behind him.
While the fight, admittedly, hadn’t been entirely smooth sailing, the young hybrid couldn’t help but appear slightly disappointed about the outcome of it anyway, even if the purpose had been to simply test her strength.
Results? Well, In terms of power, Chiyori didn’t quite match that of a pureblood vampire, but the output had still been rather unexpected — enough take on a full-grown man by herself despite her size. Not what one would’ve expected of a rather ordinary-looking woman. However, it probably would’ve been more of a challenge if her sparring partner had chosen not to hold back.
“Please, don’t do that, Viktor,” Chiyori added simply, intonation gentle despite the request. Though, she had no real intention of hurting him, she decided to press her weight further into his restrained form. She was obviously trying to prove a point here. Because, well… it worried her — if things went awry, and Viktor couldn’t stop her, who could then?
