Let's talk about the Raising of Lazarus in Crime and Punishment
I think the Raising of Lazarus is a very clever way of showing Rodion being "raised from the dead". He is still connected to the murders he committed, but here, as Sonya reads the passage, he is alive again, he is not dead with the old woman and her sister. Now, this is actually something l would like to touch on because l really do believe that Rodion considers himself dead after the murders. He was unable to fulfill his desire, to prove his theory, just when he "helped" other people by murdering the old woman, he is forced to kill her little sister too, who did not deserve to be killed (this is something l said many times, but it's important). That is why Rodion is so surprised when the corpses are removed when he goes back to the apartment, his theory is that he is dead along with them but he is still there when they are not. Now, when he goes to Sonya, despite telling her she is not helping anyone but destroying herself for the sake of her family, he still wants her to not give up, he wants her to keep going and living, despite all the suffering. That is because he sees himself in Sonya, he, too, is destroying himself and betraying himself for nothing but, unlike Sonya, his reason for it is his pride, to be impactful in the world and to be praised for all the people who were the old woman's victims, while Sonya's reasoning is self negligence, she dismisses herself for her family, though her mother was going to die anyway and her siblings would be homeless no matter what. The main reason for Rodion wanting Sonya to not give up is to comfort himself, though he does not have a purpose anymore, though no matter what he does, he cannot be good anymore, he still wants hope and a purpose to keep living. That is what he does through Sonya, if Sonya can do it, why can't he? Their suffering is the same, their reason for suffering is the same, it is for no reason at all. When Sonya reads the passage, she gets more serious, and into the moment, her belief makes Rodion believe as well, that is why The Raising of Lazarus is not only Rodion's "raising", it is also Sonya's as well.

Before I go to sleep I leave you all with this piece of advice: sometimes you don't actually have to answer big political questions, sometimes you can just say "I am not smart enough to know that, I just know the small things I do to help." Like you can often times completely avoid making a fool of yourself if you just say you don't know.
#simon says#to explain here and not in a reblog:#sometimes when you try to explain big picture solutions you're gonna sound dumb#you might not have done enough research#you might not have a rebuttal to a counter argument#you might not be articulate enough to explain why you think this#sometimes you gotta take a step back and give the simple solution. the one man solution#you do what you can to fight against the problem#you talk to people to help spread awareness and how to fight the bad problem#and you vote and invite others to vote for bigger steps towards solving the problem#like you can talk about theory and how you believe we need to do a huge drastic thing to solve and issue#but people will disagree and argue til you're blue in the face#they'll poke and prod until you mess up or lose your temper and use it against you#and you'll feel dumb and they'll learn nothing#sometimes the best thing to do is step away from the big picture and just say 'idk what the solution is I just know the things I can do“#sometimes you gotta admit you're not a scientist/expert and you can't answer that#i used this while talking with my Dad tonight#he brought up our climate crisis and space travel as a possible solution#and I said I think that's just addressing the symptom and not the cause and we need to care for our Earth now#and he asked me what solutions I think would fix it#and knowing my incredibly smart Dad who is articulate and ready to throw rebuttles at a moments notice to play devils advocate#and my past experience in struggling in this topic with him before#i just told him I didn't know. all i knew is the little things I can and do do to help#and that hopefully by spreading the word and habits and encouraging others to vote for those bigger solutions I could help make a change#but all I really could do is the little things I have control over#and the topic became much less stressful about the little things we have control over#like planting native plants and recycling and adopting habits that are healthier to our planet#which was 100% more preferable to if I tried to give a big solution. because I would reveal i didn't have all the knowledge needed to argue#and my articulation would make me sound like a stupid kid who only thinks they know what's best#so yeah I basically suggest that if you dont wanna feel like shit after debating someone just step away from the big picture for a moment

i take issue with a view of community when it seems you only consider it to include people you like who agree with your views 100% without deviation or nuance & when you seem to believe that the only reason someone would fall outside this line is because they're evil (& you're the good guys). i'm very sorry but that's not community to me. maybe "house party" would be a better term? instead of trying to buzz wordify everything that makes you feel big and special, try just being honest about how you actually interact with your real community, especially the folks you see as evil for not falling in perfect lockstep with your decided worldview

actually i think I am going to be a dick about this even though it's possible I'm being unreasonable. I think it's shitty to post art from behind Jo's paywall unless it's art you commissioned. Otherwise, you are denying her income from posting and/or posting something someone else bought, which sucks a little

Decided to log into twitter (hell) and outside of everything going to shit as always i found this piece of shit as my banner
Tumblr media
I dont even remember when i made this but i do remember that i did and i remember how i made it
I saw a picture on twitter w some kind of caption and decided that i could make it look like a banner
i tried to add the fire flaming text that i saw on some reposted to twitter tumblr posts where someome makes a grammatical error and someone corrects them in a form of flaming (sometimes animated) text (never change guys, gals and all of you magnificent pals lol) but at the time i didnt know the website that you all used so i tried to improvise and google
I remember half way thru the making of this text being so upset that it looked like shit but after taking a break for 20 minutes i said "fuck it, it is way funnier this way" and i kinda glad that back then i decided to "fuck it we ball" it
It looks disgusting and i love it

Truly fucking insane to me how even some trans people have drunk the gender essentialist koolaid and think that trans men are like, inherently arms of the patriarchy and oppressors. Just like believing all cis men are each, individually responsible for patriarchy. Isn’t the point of feminism that the system and people’s unconscious upholding of the system are the thing to be criticizing?? Gender essentialism is still gender essentialism even if you do it to trans people.
I don’t know why people don’t understand that treating any group as a monolith whose experiences are all the same is like. Bad and harmful. Trans men are men but they are not cis men. Many of us have experienced girl / womanhood enforced on us by society and deeply understand the struggle. I don’t see why it’s harmful to acknowledge the fact that trans men experience misogyny!!!! Lots of trans men haven’t or won’t transition! I promise you even if we are men, see ourselves as men, the vast majority of society will not.
I really hate infighting and “calling out” whole sections of the community, and I guarantee I’m not talking about 90% of trans women who are normal but that other 10% act like trans men have betrayed women by “choosing to be men”. Isn’t that like, 1) literally gc / terf logic and 2) implying that trans people just up and choose their gender one day (not saying that some don’t but like. Being trans is a deeply personal thing that’s often not a choice.)
This is thinking that makes trans men guilty to be trans men. We’re used to hearing it from radfems but to hear it from people who are supposed to be our allies??? From people who we have something so deeply in common with? It fucking sucks!!!
#sorry I just saw three whole Twitter posts that literally were like ALL TRANS WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL AND FUNNY AND AWESOME#and all trans men are stupid and stinky and bad#trans men continue to be punching bags every three months for some fucking reason#I’m not disagreeing that trans women are put under a lot more pressure societally and that fucking sucks#but literally whenever trans men speak up we ARE dismissed.#our struggles may not be the same but they still fucking exist#this is mostly a vent but feel free to (civilly and constructively) talk to me about where my blind spots might be#I’m taking American cultural anthropology and we just learned the word intersectionality and I don’t think people truly understand that#the intersection between “being men’ and “being raised as female’ is very real#I think what that male model said was stupid in terms of like#thinking that trans women are to blame for being so visible#but what he said about the general way people are raised in gendered ways is not bullshit.#culture affects us from literally all angles and it’s wild to think that a trans man could just flip a switch one day and forget#being constantly put down and told to be kind and put others feelings above your own and be scared of being assaulted and blah blah blah#being raised as a girl shit. unless you transitioned as a child and had super supportive parents that shit is REAL#my post#trans#jfc even if you were raised in the right gender medical misogyny affects us too! our bodies are policed just like women’s are#also lol I’m not saying I just learned the term or idea intersectionality it’s just interesting to learn about it academically

Everyone has the right to do whatever they want and to "curate their own experience" on here or whatever of course but like there is something to an artist in a circle you're in who you admire having you blocked. Like I say all the time I'm an annoying piece of shit but I don't like just how many people seem to have realized that I'm an annoying piece of shit lately LMAO

One thing you need to know about me is that I will never reblog anything that has the addition "this should be reblogged by everyone" or anything of the like.
#unless it's like#really funny and not a guilt trippy kind of bullshit#i can agree 130% with a post and then see that comment and I'm like#yeah no. go fuck yourself.#(this point has been made so many times but people don't get why it's annoying apparently. people don't dislike your stupid addition#because they secretly disagree with the post but because now it seems like some weird social obligation to rb is#rb this or you're a bad person is a clever marketing strategy but it's quite stupid because it weakens the original point#oh you're saying everyone should rb this? well now it looks like the ppl rbing actually just do it out of some feeling#of social obligation. not because they really want to but because they want to fulfill the arbitrary standards you just made up for being#a good person#and don't get me wrong most certainly are most people rb these posts still out of agreement with the original statement#but it's still annoying as fuck and also you'd think ppl would know by now that people don't generally like being told what to do#so my hypothesis is (and i won't do any research to prove or disprove it (i might be very wrong and most people don't mind obviously)) bjt#but my hypothesis is that people who originally agree with the post but have a strong desire of being free in their choices#won't actually end up rbing bc it's just not that free of a choice anymore bc you just had to make it 'obligatory' but we all know#nothing is obligatory on a stupid webbed site like this so they scroll past while people who maybe would have scrolled past now feel#like they might actually be a bad person if they don't do as it says but without actually caring about the content. which diminishes#the positivity the post originally was supposed to spread bc how do you tell ppl actually mean it now when they rb these things#anyway. am i ranting about something completely asinine phenomenon on tumblr.com? yes.#would it be better to not dedicate my time and energy into making a 'hate' post? absolutely. but that will never stop me from doing so#(also works for things like 'you guys HAVE to do xyz [for your (mental) health/etc]'. literally the best advice phrased like this#is counterproductive. post something that doesn't sound like you're judging everyone who does otherwise and maybe ppl will be more inclined#to believe whatever your point or statement is)#ok I'll stop#shut up amy#void screams

I mean sure, I can understand this perspective, but I'm not sure whether most people feel less shaken to be thrust into conversations about "self-unaliving" than conversations about "suicide"
and I for one as a survivor would much rather unexpectedly encounter somebody talking about "rape" than somebody talking about how funny it is to have sex with somebody when they don't want to, a normal thing that doesn't need to be named because it's So Normal.
which is to say. this is a post about words. the words are not the distressing thing about the discussion. the distressing thing is the distressing thing about the discussion. sugarcoating, dodging or renaming the distressing thing doesn't make it less distressing but it DOES often make it harder to have a frank discussion about it or address it in serious terms.
[pinch of salt: solid probability from their blog that this person is a Literal 14 Year Old and the perspective from 30 and 14 are very different. I do stand by all the points I'm making but I think this conversation lands a lot different for people at different life stages - there is something to be said for the general issue that the internet has flattened social groups to the degree that I as a 30 year old can make a post to my audience of largely adult millennials that immediately enters the same conversational space as people half my age and still in school. that seems. ungreat. as the primary way we engage in conversation. but I don't have solutions to offer.]
you gotta be able to say "die"
you gotta be able to say "suicide"
you gotta be able to talk about "sex"
they're uncomfortable topics, YEAH for SURE
because LIFE is uncomfortable. Death and suicide and sex and pain are straight up going to happen. not having words for the way it discomforts you doesn't make it more comfortable, it just makes you less able to reach out about it.
even more vital, you gotta be able to say words like "rape", "abuse", "queer" or "racist". cause we fought fucking hard to name those experiences. to identify "rape" as distinct from "sex" and "racism" as distinct from "acceptable behaviour" and "queer" as distinct from "invert"
like the function of communication is not to minimise immediate discomfort. we gotta be able to talk about stuff that's hard or sucks or causes difficult conversations.
#red said#i also wholeheartedly disagree with the rest of your post#all entertainment is political. all of it. because politics is the models we use to describe how we interact as a community#and art is inherently communal. so it's inherently political.#that doesn't mean all entertainment has to be a Pure Political Statement. some stuff is just dumb because dumb shit is fun.#but like it's not. detached from the world. and a lack of political intent doesn't mean it's utterly unchallenging.#ok for example. have you ever. enjoyed watching a cheesy 80s zombie movie and it is gory and stupid and great#but then there's a scene where maybe there's a really fucked-up implication about what we as an audience are meant to think#or a rape scene played for light laughs. or whatever your line is.#and they meant it to be fun. you watched it for fun. but you're not having fucking fun any more. there's a bad taste in your mouth.#contrast. sometimes i am reading a nonfiction article for work or something. it is miserable and grim it is about homelessness and dv#but the writer has put it together so well and made their point so clearly you're like YES! YES! THAT'S IT!!!!#and even beyond that like. i am a disabled multiple rape and abuse survivor. i have been through a non zero amount of The Shit.#and a lot of the stuff i find most entertaining and relaxing is stuff that acknowledges that as a Thing Which Happens#like I'm a nerd man. i like video essays about misogyny and fascism and reactionary homophobia.#i like films that make me cry bc they touch an emotional raw spot. i like tiktoks where people joke about their experiences of abuse#i like SFF stories about trauma and survival and sad robots#and yeah you know sometimes i want to watch a comedy panel show or a tiktok of bottles rolling down stairs#but effective entertainment is a conversation! comedy and chill vibes rest on like. deciding what to riff on#and who your anticipated audience is. and nah actually that's not apolitical and also#identifying common human experiences like death or trauma or marginalisation as inherently Political and therefore Unfun#misses the point that like. the question isn't what you acknowledge but how you acknowledge it.#as a rape survivor. for example. i don't necessarily want to open tiktok to a lecture on rape culture.#but i might well stick about for a standup routine about being a survivor of rape#and i will absolutely bounce from a vid where nobody mentions rape bc they think what they're talking about is fine when it's. rapey af.#anyway. this is a sidebar cause even if i agreed about entertainment v politics my main point would still stand#but i very much don't agree and i think you need to maybe look at how you approach entertainment media as neutral#but also i feel very strongly about this and not to harp on the like aS A sUrViVoR thing but#AS A SURVIVOR my fucking LIFE includes ''dark topics'' like suicide and rape. and i don't appreciate how often that's treated as#an unfair imposition to speak about or acknowledge. 'dark shit' is inescapably a major part of my life/self AND I'm funny + entertaining

The most uncomfortable feeling ever is watching Sausage Party while eating.
EDIT: Okay ignore the tags. I watched the last 25 minutes of it and they were certainly not as profound as the beginning. I knew there was a food sex scene but holy mother of god
#I’ve killed… so many 😬#Yeah if you have hyper-empathy maybe skip this one… I don’t and it’s making me question my food lol#sausage party#I appreciate the Twilight Zone reference with the cookbook and the Meat Loaf scene#I definitely don’t appreciate the blatant racial profiling especially considering when it was made#But I disagree with the sentiment that it’s the “worst movie ever”#because clearly whoever is saying that has never seen Tender Dracula or Partners or the shaky camera movie about dinosaurs from 2013#Sausage Party is actually very well done and has some excellent commentary on religion and nihilism#It’s the deranged bastard child of Toy Story and Animal Farm and I love the worldbuilding#I seldom watch a movie that renders me speechless and unable to make witty remarks#I was in awe and shock for the first twenty minutes at the sheer uh [vaguely gestures] I don’t even know what to call it#I’m taking a break unwillingly because my headphones died and I need both ears bathed in sound for the full experience#I was expecting it to be stupid but it isn’t. It’s Tusk (2014) levels of absurdist dark humor#It’s very flawed but I don’t hate it#I want to write an analysis on it so bad but 1.) I have to finish it and 2.) People might think I’m insane#and 3.) They would not be wrong#I have no honor and no excuses#I didn’t even plan on watching it; YouTube just served it to me on a silver platter tonight and I said “fuck it I’m not doing anything”
