As you get older, the cartoons you watch stick in your mind... and annoy your parents *evil chuckle*

On the rooftop of the Gotham City police station, ten-year-old Dick Grayson stood with his mentor, Batman, nervously fidgeting with the new Spongebob-themed rings he had just purchased.

Robin (Dick Grayson, 10): Stop moving your arm like that! Your fist is already too big!

Batman let out a groan, feeling exasperated. He had no choice but to indulge Dick's newfound obsession with the antics of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

Batman: This is ridiculous!

Robin (holding up his little kid fist): Come on, please! It’s so much fun, and we’re heroes! We can do this together. I promise it’ll be worth it... Just do it for me?

Batman (a tremor of dread in his voice): Why did I adopt a child? Fine. Let's get this over with.

With a resigned sigh, Batman raised his fist to meet Robin's. Robin smiled giggling eagerly.

Robin (whispering): Psst... you have to say the words, Batman!

Realizing that Commissioner Gordon was just a few feet away, Batman's stomach churned at the thought of what he was about to do.

Batman: I’m going to regret this…

He took a deep breath and finally said:

Batman: MERMAID MAN AND BARNACLE BOY, UNITE!

Robin: YAY! LET’S GO! WOOO!

Eagerly, Robin dashed off, energy radiating from him as he whooped with delight. Commissioner Gordon chuckled quietly, covering his mouth to stifle his laughter.

Batman: I seriously regret letting him watch cartoons all day.

Gordon: You don't want him to be bored. That was adorable! Who would've thought you were raising a Spongebob fan?

Batman (embarrassed): I just needed a break that day, and he wanted to watch TV. This stays between us on this rooftop.

Gordon: Your secret is safe with me. But you should probably keep an eye on him.

Batman: Yep. Robin, stop running off by yourself!

Robin: Come on, Mermaid Man!

Batman: You are not calling me that!

As he chased after his giggling protege, Commissioner Gordon checked his watch.

Gordon: I think it’s time to call it a night.

Many year later...

At twenty-four, Dick tossed ripped-up paper confetti in the air after Bruce lost a contest, reveling in his father's defeat.

Dick: Yay! Way to lose, Bruce!

Cass (clapping and smiling): Aww, he’s so supportive!

Bruce (pinching the bridge of his nose): No, no, he’s not. Damn Canadian cartoons.

Jason: What makes him so special?!

Bruce (looking up from his phone): Oh no.

Dick (grinning): I eat cereal, Jason.

Bruce (annoyed): This dork I adopted tortures me with references from Canadian cartoons! I should’ve just had you watch C-Span instead. I hate that show more than I hate Spongebob!

Jason: What show is this? I swear, if it bothers you, I want to see it again.

Bruce: Oh God...

The Pancake Incident

Batman and Nightwing stood over a massive pancake left in the street by a particularly eccentric Gothamite—an impressive feat, even by Gotham standards. Nightwing looked at Batman, who averted his gaze, already bracing for the inevitable.

Nightwing (grinning, hands thrown up): IT’S A BOY!

Batman: Goddammit, I told you I don’t get these references!

Nightwing (smirking, hand on hip): Oh, come on! You know this reference; you’re just pretending.

Batman (covering his face): I don’t want to know it.

New Generations

Damian (as Robin): We saved the day! I have something I want to try.

With a small smile, Damian raised his fist.

Damian: Pound it?

Nightwing smiled and nodded, fist-bumping his younger brother.

Nightwing and Damian: Pound it!

From the side, Batman raised an eyebrow.

Batman: What was that? Is that a reference to something?

Damian: This cheesy show I introduced him to. It’s what the heroes do after saving the day.

Batman: You never gave me a fist bump.

Damian: You're a sqaure.

Nightwing laughed making Batman leave angrily.

Me Yapping At The Partner Literally Yesterday: It's just annoying to me that, intentionally or not, Sega and the wider playerbase insist on viewing Shadow as the Vegeta to Sonic's Goku. I would argue that --if we HAVE to draw dynamic parallels from popular culture, which I'm not even sold on-- Shadow is MUCH better understood as the Batman to Sonic's Superman.
