considering each episode as an allegory for sam and dean's story has done irreparable damage to my psyche. if bugs is about cursed land and if bugs is about sam and his relationship to his father, his family, then bugs is about how sam's body (his "land") has been cursed, later even confirmed to be by his ancestors just as oasis plains was cursed by its ancestors. mary sacrificed sam's body to azazel, poisoned him, sent him to the slaughter. you can't break a curse, you can only outrun it. the fact that sam and dean were stuck within the curse only solidifies the connection: they're fruitlessly fighting the literal curse while sam fights the metaphorical curse within him. it's an episode about sam and his anger at john, about dean and his loyalty to john, about how they're both wrong in different ways. it's an episode about family and ancestors and killing your children, making your lands infertile so no future generations can survive on them. it's an episode about sam.

and it comes right before home, the episode which presents with full, explicit confirmation that sam has developed psychic powers. there's evil inside him and he's scared—"what's happening to me?"—and he's uncertain about himself, his past, and his future. the episode that reveals his psychic powers is the episode they return to their childhood home, is the episode where mary's ghost makes an appearance. sam was cursed by mary and their home was made inhospitable; she forced them out like the white man forced out the euchee.

and it comes right after hook man, the episode which wraps sam's feelings of being cursed in sinful, evil, religious language, which shows his deference to the christian god, which implies there's something evil within him that's hurting the people he loves. sam is evil, sam is cursed, sam is harboring something bad within him and the way to absolve him of his sins is to pray for divine retribution and punishment, for death, because the thing inside of sam is inextricable from himself, is bound to him.

all three episodes are about family and repeating curses, the echoes of harm carrying through generations. all framed through sam's relationship to john, to his past, to the people who came before him he knows nothing about. all culminating in the revelation that sam's fears are coming true and the curse he mentioned two episodes ago is real and it's getting worse and no one knows how to stop it.

but you can't break a curse. you can only get out of the way.

Really like your work! Excuse my ignorance, but what sort of set up do you need to create AI artwork? The programs are getting so good so quick, sex workers are gonna be out of a job pretty soon!

My work flow currently is DALL-E3 to generate the initial scene. Then I use a few different editing applications to add and remove elements and manipulate the image further. Lastly adding finishing touches and adjustments like Contrast, Saturation, Lighting.

I hope that doesn’t happen! I think everyone should support their favorite sex workers/writers/artists especially in our niche community. Most creators have already switched to subscription models versus individual video/photoset/comics sales. I think the loyal customer base is people who want a more personalized experience where they can interact with creators/performers with requests and live streams etc.

Things will definitely change though across every industry, lots of people will adapt but the people who just rage at anything ai and refuse to adjust will probably suffer on their high horse.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is a Reverse Big Bang? A: A reverse big bang is an event where authors and artists collaborate with one another. The way it works is that people sign up to be an author and/or an artist. Then we have the authors pick their favorite art piece and we pair them with the proper artists. The pairings work together to create a story for the artwork it’s inspired by.  

Q: What kind of art can I create to participate in this bang as an artist? A: Art can be created using any medium that you like.  All we ask is that it can be recorded and shared so that authors can preview it before claims.  

Q: Are there specific characters that I need to include in my art in order to be eligible to submit it for the bang? A: So long as the art features at least one character that is featured in the Stranger Things show, it is eligible.

Q:  How long do stories need to be in order to be eligible for the bang? A: We are only asking that stories be a minimum of 3k words.   There is no maximum word count.  

Q:  What is a beta reader? A: Betas are people who will read a story and give constructive feedback to the author before they post. Most betas specialize in certain things, like SPAG (grammar), characterization, emotional flow, alpha readers (those who read to make sure it all works, mostly plot-conscious) research, or pickers. Pickers are people who are experts in particular fields (ex. Medical pickers could be those who have been in medical school and can help you create a realistic scene or offer advice in that department).    

Q: Do stories need to be beta read? A: Yes.  You are welcome to use your own beta or reach out to someone in the bang.  

Q: What is a pinch hitter? A:  Pinch Hitters are authors who step in when someone has to drop out. There are a lot of unknown variables in a big bang, especially with the lengthy schedule. It’s hard to plan ahead when you’re not sure what your workload will be, which makes it hard to stay in the bang. Authors sometimes can’t keep their initial workload and would have to drop out of the bang. It happens. That’s where pinch hitters come in, to take over the abandoned art.    

Q: Does my art have to be completed prior to claims? A: We ask that art be about 50% complete prior to your submission for claims.  We understand that creating art is no easy feat, we just ask that there is enough of the process completed so that authors can have a clear idea of what they’re claiming.

State of the Blog and Plans Going Forward

Hello friends! I wanted to share my plans for this blog now that we've gone through all the episodes and documented more than four years(!!) of good, good Harus.

The bottom line up front: this blog will still be updating, but there is going to be a drop in frequency, and I will take requests via the askbox if there's something you want to see! The rest is under the cut to spare your dash, but read on if you're curious!

First of all, I want to assure everyone that this blog is NOT going away. I care about it way too much to just abandon it. That said, I really don't have it in me to keep it updating daily at this point. There are nowhere near enough "new" Harus I could post, and while I suppose I could start the anime over again from the beginning, I want to make this transition on a high note, and there's nothing I could do that would be more satisfying than (somewhat-accidentally-but-then-totally-on-purpose once I saw it was possible) lining up the end of the anime to coincide with Haru's birthday. Plus, I always want this blog to be a labor of love and joy, so I really do need to make this adjustment before it starts feeling like a chore or obligation to update ^^;

So what does that mean? It means there will still be some new posts to this blog, but they're going to become much more sporadic in nature. I haven't exactly figured out what this looks like yet. It might be every week, it might just be when I feel like it. I still have some manga panels to go through and some anime-related "bonus materials." Plus, there are some stats and compilation-based photosets I want to make (and my personal top 10 Harus? You betcha!). Not to mention finishing the poor, neglected blog index, if you've ever looked at this page on desktop!

That actually brings up another one of my goals for this project: archival and general Appmon news/promotion. In terms of archival, I want to export the contents this blog (screenshots and captions) somewhere outside of Tumblr; I'm thinking a Neocities page or something. I also might use this space to reblog whatever Appmon-related news we might get in the future (few and far between, obviously, but it could still happen!). There are also some other Appmon-related projects that are rattling around in my head that I would also like to get out there (character comparison by director and/or Caught-Up Old Man supercut, anyone?). So things might look kind of quiet as I do some work on some backend HTML and other behind-the-scenes stuff, but progress will probably be happening on those fronts, slowly but surely!

All that said, if you really can't get enough Haru, there are several ways you can help to keep this blog going!

Send me a date on the calendar, ANY date, and I'll reply with all of the daily Harus that got posted over the years! The only exception to that rule is July 1, since that day's dedicated to reblogging fanworks :)

Send me ideas for photosets! With 4 years of backlog, I'm sure there are some interesting ones that could be made.

Send requests for gifs! I only did this sporadically during the original run, but if there's something you want to see that I didn't make already, I'll do it.

Let me know what YOUR favorite Haru(s) are. It doesn't have to be all about me! :D

Send me Harus or requests for Harus that I'm missing? This blog has always accepted submissions. But please note I will not post more than individual Appmon manga panels, because Naoki Akamine, the mangaka, has requested that any art they've shared and posted on social media not be reposted. If it's not directly from the anime, I also have a strong preference for original, official images WITH SOURCES, because I've noticed there are a few AI-upscaled versions of things like card art floating around out there. I will always do my best to track down the original image, and will not use images that have been enhanced with AI on this blog. A sure way to tell: any text on the image looks fuzzy (and wrong!)

Last but not least (and I know I say this a lot, but bear with me): thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for sticking with this blog, whether you're a longtime follower or a relative newcomer. This whole project started on a whim, as a passion project early in the COVID-19 pandemic, and I could not have guessed that it would have taken me this long to make it through the whole series, one good Haru at a time. I have spent a truly shocking amount of time working on this blog, but an equal amount of love, for one of my absolute favorite Digimon series and gogglehead protagonists.

Just finished making screenshots for my favorite cosplay contest, which takes place in our FC. Personally, it is difficult for me to choose a similar character for cosplay so that I can get into the image, so I thought about this contest for a long time. I present to you the unsurpassed Bishamon-ten, the goddess of war from the anime Noragami (Homeless God). And her shinki Kazuma. Also in the photoset are other shinki: Yugiha - sword and Kuraha - Lion. I watched it when it was just coming out. Nostalgia. The role of Kazuma was played by Bunny - Landa Hel)

I like sharing small videos on Telegram. I'm excited to post more mature artwork in my FA gallery.

When I have a new piece of art I'm most excited to share with everyone, it will be posted simultaneously across my platforms that day.

Pretty straightforward move nowadays, but it makes those pieces more special to me. There's going to be a lot of new art to share now, but I've already had my time with some of these pieces for months, even years since I made them. I want to set aside simultaneous art posts for art that I can't wait to share with everyone. If I simultaneously posted everything I draw, everywhere I share my art, every single day, I think I would go insane. Bonkers, ballistic, virtual insanity kinda stuff. You know, the numbers game.

Part four of my best of 2021 photoset, this time showcasing late summer through the Phoenix Mountains, Spur Cross Ranch, and the unexpected beauty of Montezuma Well in central Arizona. This set caught some of my favorite traditional landscapes of the year, especially Pinnacle, which has been my desktop background since I took it. The title image, however, is probably my favorite out of the whole year, capturing such an essence of what I love about the southwest in just one viewpoint. These are my favorite fanfics that I wrote in 2021, in no particular order, other than a few thematic pairings in this photoset. It just so happens that all but one are FMAB ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1. what will you leave behind? — Riza as the Spiritfarer — 71,776 words — I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I wrote this story. It started as an idea in my notes app as I was trying to fall asleep, it grew because I mentioned it offhandedly and Emma asked for more, and it became what it is because I love Riza Hawkeye with my entire heart. It’s a love letter to her, Royai, Spiritfarer, and giving yourself grace as you do your part to make the world a better place.

2. the sky is getting bright (somebody slow it down) — Roy’s final days before going through the Everdoor — 3301 words — You know that moment from Parks and Rec where Leslie Knope is laughing about doing something mean and then she abruptly goes, “Oh, this is bad. I should not have done this”...that was me with this fic, when I realized that it might be fun to write from Roy’s perspective for this intense moment, since I had lived in Riza’s head for so long...and I was right 😭

3. and let the words fall out — Roy reading a story to Riza as a young teen —2504 words — This was the second FMAB fic I wrote. While the first one was all about leaning into this world and trying to get a hold of the different characters, this one was a chance for me to try a few new things: those bracketed asides for one, as well as a deeper dive into tentative romance (when I’ve normally lived and died by gen fic). There’s a lot more of me in this fic than you’d expect.

. 4. a moment of pride — Riza while under Bradley’s watch — 1485 words — I had a version of this story for months before I published it. I’d gotten some really good beta feedback from Emma, but it still didn’t feel finished for the longest time. Part of that came from a period of insecurity with my own writing, which was both helped and hindered by reading a TON of fic in the first half of the summer. After I finally published it, I started working on the Spiritfarer AU, so I like to think of this fic as a step on that journey.

5. The Royai Mixtape Drabbles — 47 drabbles about Royai — 4700 words — I am still so obsessed with this project xD I have always loved the puzzle of a drabble (which means exactly 100 words to my old fandom self), and it was even more of a challenge trying to work in a lyric from each song while simultaneously following Royai’s entire life. The end result is angstier than I usually HC for them, but it felt right, given that the source material was Hamilton, and I can count on one hand the number of songs from that musical that HAVEN’T made me cry. I made a cover art for each chapter (plus an inside track list), and I’m linking to chapter 4 since it’s my favorite, but if you give it a try, obviously go back to the start!

6. that’s one less thing to worry about — Royai first kiss after the Promised Day — 2013 words — This fic only exists because I was that sad over having to shift around my timeline for the Mixtape Drabbles and would therefore be losing the line “Well, I’m never going to be the Fuhrer now.” I was so worried about writing this much kissing (at the time, three paragraphs of kissing was a lot for me!) but the warm reaction I got really gave me the confidence to keep going with the Royai tenderness.

Shakespeare’s Avatar: the Last Airbender — The ATLA prologue, as told by the Bard — 113 words — I wrote this for a Voiceteam translation challenge, and had so much fun figuring out the cadence of the iambic pentameter! I’ll probably record this one as a podfic someday, but I’d happily listen to someone else’s version first.

8. smothered and covered — Team Mustang at the Waffle House — 2897 words — To have the privilege of returning to my found family roots AND write about one of my favorite Southern traditions?? This fic was a writer’s delight no matter how you look at it, and I hope to have the opportunity to write this level of comedy and from Jean’s POV again soon.

10. at least I’ve still got you to hold — Royai first kiss in post-canon Ishval, featuring blind!Roy — 3125 words — I joke that I am incapable of writing a Royai first kiss from Riza’s POV, but it’s just so fun to imagine kissing her lololol Plus I enjoy imagining Roy rejecting the stone, and I feel comfortable writing him as a blind character despite my ability to see, thanks to my time reading and writing Toph Beifong from ATLA (though I would hope that anyone with more knowledge on the subject would correct me if I ever fall into stereotypes). I’ve written one more fic in this particular world, and I hope to return to it again.

2017 BJYX Timeline : At First Sight.

Everything starts with a blank canvass. Oh we painted each others lives inch by inch. from black, gray and blue to colors we never thought existed. Two photos from different places, longing to be one.
