shes working to keep people mobile and happy, and that in itself is incredible. not to mention her genius and drive ⭐️⭐️
I don’t think Winry gets enough credit as a genius. Like, automail would need her to understand engineering, robotics, anatomy, and particularly how nervous systems work, and she’s technically a surgeon. She was already a regular helper at Pinako’s shop when she was 11. At 15, she walked into a town full of top automail experts and impressed all but one of them with a rush-order arm she’d made. Then, she took over one person’s shop so thoroughly, her customers won’t even let someone else make the outer casings. On top of that, she read medical books as a child and not only understood them, but retained enough of it to successfully deliver a baby years later even though that had nothing to do with her preferred field. And she didn’t have any help from the Truth.
Winry might not be an alchemist, but she’s a medical and engineering genius and somebody needs to tell her that right now.

Hello everyone! A group of friends and I got into a discussion that spanned multiple weeks about the true definition of a "babygirl" in media. It started as a discussion of "babygirls" in Linked Universe fanfiction but soon expanded to mainstream media, and as such most examples are from this mainstream media for a wider audience (aside from War Crimes Warriors from Call Them Brothers by @wutheringmights, whose fabulous work sparked this debate). Please note that the definition is still under construction, and that all examples may not fit within it 100%, but I believe still generally match the vibes of babygirl. Now, without further ado:
Babygirl Definition
Committing/has committed war crimes (*)
Has Emotions TM about the war crimes, often doubles down
Usually male?
Is, at some point in his life, a sad wet cat (**)
Has experienced the Horrors (***)
Make the Horrors everybody else's problem
Attractive (????)
To fans: endearing but also frustrating, misunderstood
To non-fans: hateable
(Used to) have an ego/pride/"reputation" (which may lead to the aforementioned war crimes)
Has a vulnerability they're stupid about, are aware they're being stupid about it, and yet continue to be stupid about it (passion project, child, etc).
Babygirl examples: War Crime Warriors from Call Them Brothers, Jayce Arcane, Hohenheim FMAB, Zuko ATLA, Boromir LOTR, Elphaba Wicked, Anakin Star Wars, Odysseus, Bill Nye, Stanley and Stanford Pines Gravity Falls, Jamie Lannister, Obama, Howl Moving Castle, Katniss and Haymitch The Hunger Games, The 9th Doctor, Dean Winchester, Bucky Barnes.
(*) War crimes do not refer specifically to acts that violate the Geneva Conventions, but rather to any general act that would be considered inexcusable or otherwise extremely unsavory by the in-universe population. Ex: Jayce accidentally killing a Zaunite child.
(**) For definition of sad wet cat, just imagine a sopping wet cat caught in a sudden, unexpected rainstorm and you're there. A full definition list, like the one above, has not been made: but this term, generally defined, is a period of time in which one feels self-loathing, disgust, hatred, and powerlessness towards oneself, others, and/or the current situation at hand. Often at least partially self created. Ex: Zuko's banishment arc
(***) A traumatic experience (sometimes more than one) that changes them irrevocably. It propels the character forwards into the plot in a way that they do not anticipate, enjoy, and/or completely understand, but have no choice but to adapt to anyways. Ex: Katniss' reaping Thank you to @bittirsweeteer @not-freyja @life-in-winter @elle-rosewater @hytiaa @cinis0 @anime-obsessed @whatvioletdoes-blog @lunaopus @glowingmin @gia-d and @undertheopensky for contributing to the discussion, that was a fun few conversation (if I've forgotten anyone, please let me know). This is mostly being posted for my own amusement, but I hope that anyone else who stumbles across this post finds it mildly amusing! You're welcome to reblog with your own babygirls, lol

There's four LotR ones on there so that's clearly my current fandom.
I obviously have a type.
Maybe I'll do a separate one for the girls.

i could go for hours and hours about nina tucker. about her innocence, about her victimhood, about everything she could have been, and what happened to her.
the more i think about it, the worse it gets. nina didn’t realize what happened to her. she was just a girl, excited to spend time with her dad, excited to help him with his research. i wonder how quickly that excitement morphed into confusion. did it hurt? was she scared? questions ed and al still ask themselves, years after it happened.
oh, and speaking of ed, he still wakes up thinking about it. obviously, for the sheer terror of what happened, the heinousness of the crime, the tragedy of what he saw.
but less obviously, he wakes up thinking about alchemy as a whole. because for edward, its so much more than just a tragedy. its a crisis of faith. it was the moment ed realized that alchemy- his creed- wasn’t the pure, righteous discipline he thought it was. he had seen alchemy perverted, twisted.
but deep down? he always knew alchemy wasn’t perfect. he knows that because of human transmutation.
edward knew, from the moment he saw that grotesque, black mass that should have been their mother, that alchemy was not always noble or right. from the moment he drew a transmutation circle in blood for alphonse, to save the only person he had left, that alchemy had an undeniable twisted nature, hidden beneath a guise of brilliance. edward always wanted to believe that alchemy was a force for good. but deep down? he knew better.
so when nina happened, it wasn't just about the horrific cruelty of the act itself. it was a cruel reminder of what he and al did. a reminder of greed and its consequences. and shou tucker? a warning, of who he and al would have become, if they had let that greed consume them.
for anyone who hasn't seen FMA or FMAB and would like too, don't let this stop you. it is a FANTASTIC show and i have so much more to say for it <3
