well now that you mention it

He flew from California to South Carolina because he knew something was going on with Andrew’s old foster family. He made that trip out just to talk to him, and I wonder about how Andrew might’ve felt when he showed up at the door, when he pleaded for his help to put a bad person away, even if he was looking in the wrong direction?

Does Andrew ever think about how Higgins was the only person in his life that actively wanted justice for him? Higgins is the first person that looks at Andrew biggest trauma and thinks, something wasn’t okay there. He’s the only person that looks at that white picket fence family and sees something off and something not quite right about them and the house he lived in. Higgins is the first person of authority in Andrew’s life that advocated for him. He wanted him to find his brother, he wanted to find out what made him the way that he was, he wanted to know what went wrong and he wanted to fix it.

Andrew knows the justice system isn’t going to work in his favour. He knows it’s pointless, or feels like it will be, seeking out the full extent of the law to make those assholes pay for what they did to him. He doesn’t go to Higgins to say, “this happened to me” but Higgins looks at him anyway and sees that he’s never had a fair card dealt his way and something happened to him that he won’t talk about and when they start the investigation against the Spear family he sees Andrews name in a file, or remembers it, because he remembers him, a seemingly insignificant foster kid who got tossed around the system too much to keep track of.

What cop flies all the way from one end of the country to follow a lead that has never wanted to be found? What boss is going to sign off on chasing a foster kid with no evidence, when he’s already been ignored by him twice?

And then think about the phone call made from Wymack the night of the thanksgiving dinner. Oh, think about Higgins feeling like he’s getting nowhere, worrying that he’s failing Andrew by not being able to read his mind, unable to read the parts of his past that he refuses to write down. He gets a call. He gets a call from Wymack and Wymack doesn’t even know what to say but Neil told him to call and that must mean something.

Do you think he thought he failed Andrew by not getting to Drake sooner? Do you think he started getting his evidence together the second he hung up that phone call because he had to be there in court to defend Andrew, to defend his brother, to protect them from a system designed to see them fail?

thinking about how andrew minyard sees relationships as transactions. he can't fathom anyone wanting him to stick around so he buys the right to stay by offering something valuable in exchange – protection.

thinking about how he rushes to make deals with those he wants to keep close. thinking about how even the people that do genuinely appreciate him (betsy, renee, wymack) are tied by a deal. and he can't truly know if they would still be at his side without it.

Am I the only one who thinks that part of the reason that Andrew is so opposed to getting close to Aaron is because of how Drake used threats on incest against him. His first introduction to Aaron was tainted by drakes sick fucking fantasy’s and i genuinely think that if that hadn’t happened they would’ve bonded a whole lot sooner.

Just a thought.

I'm still so mad that August Kitko was such a mid book and like I would go do far as to say maybe it was bad but it's likely it just wasn't for me.

And then I read Hell Followed With Us and realize hey now... there's a lot of similarities between these two books and wow i am enjoying this other book way more. I almost want to dig into that and figure out why. Can you ever dislike something so much you want to take a scalpel to it and dissect it to find the bloody heart? Yeah that's what I'm feeling with August Kitko... it kinda sucks but I need to know why it makes me so mad.

*holding this song very closely* i have Many Thoughts. but i think that the story that i can see best is like... Andrew and Neil being roommates in college, and they aren't particularly close but they get along well enough. and then Neil is going to go meet with his father and Andrew learns about it and about how terrified Neil is about it, and maybe Neil tells Andrew about his past? but Andrew offers to go with him.

obviously the dinner goes really well <3 and it sparks Andrew's crush on Neil, and his protectiveness of him as well, and they start to grow closer following it. i think it would be a... i want to say medium length story? longer than a oneshot though :)

Andrew nearly jumped out of his skin when he felt the hand touch his knee, but the death grasp that Neil was holding onto him with was nothing but fear. There were probably going to be marks from Neil's blunt fingernails. Andrew bit his tongue and looked at his roommate, who was nodding along with something his father was saying, a smile on his face contrasting the discomfort blossoming in Andrew's leg. The look in his father's eyes every time Neil spoke made Andrew wish that he wasn't the only one experiencing pain at Neil's hands. Or maybe Andrew's. Neil wasn't anybody, but even he didn't deserve to sit at dinner with someone who had done so much damage to him.
