What, right after leaving Clonmel and bedore meeting Crowley, or a fully new context au style.

The first option, yes!!!

I decided that 17 was FAR too young for TEY, so I kinda just added 3 extra years in between leaving Clonmel and meeting Crowley, making him 20 at the time of TEY. (Well, technically, he was 19 when he met Crowley and turned 20 like 2 weeks later, but that's being unnecessarily detailed lol)

I like to think that, because Halt was a prince, Pritchard could only teach him the skills in isolation, and not how to use them. Y'know, like learning how to pick a lock on some little play toy you out in your lap, and then having to actually do it on a real door. So, these 3 years were when Halt had to transition from aiming at a target to aiming at an actual animal. There were also things like how he knew logically how to set up the tent and then realized that actually doing it was just different enough to make him feel dumb.

This also, btw, puts Halt as a homeless, jobless, (illegal) immigrant who speaks the language at a 3rd grade level during the height of Morgarath's rule. So. He had 🌈fun!! ✨️

By the time he met Crowley he understood the language a lot better (3 years of actually living in the kingdom will certainly help with that) but he still kinda struggled a bit. I like to think that he can't pronounce Morgarath's name and always ends up calling him "Morgor", "Morgaah", or simply, "lighting man". Why? Because it's entertaining, that's why

The fic I'm writing takes place when he had JUST moved to Araluen, and wasn't quite so stone faced yet. In the fic he finds a group of other homeless people, mostly other immigrants, who let him stay by their fire that night and help him fix a couple things from his saddle bag. It also centers heavily around his relationship with his old horse, Declan, from before he got Abelard, and how that horse was his only reliable source of companionship

i absolutely ADORE your writing skills. every fic of yours that ive read so far go in incredible detail and such amazing storylines! how do you write so well?? what's your writing process like??

First off, thank you!! 💖 So happy to hear you’re a fan of my writing style and ideas ✨ Thirdly, sorry if this post becomes a little long, as I’ll likely end up getting into the minutia 😆

My process is probably kinda odd, and definitely extremely time-consuming.

I start off with a rough draft(?), which is basically just me jotting down random possible ideas and thoughts for a given fic, sometimes in no particular order, just whatever comes to mind when I’m brainstorming. Sometimes fully formed paragraphs with dialogue, sometimes just little suggestions. Then when I’ve gotten that out of my system I start to organize it by rearranging everything until it seems to be in a good order, then deem that the fic’s overview and move it to a lower section of my document.

Next, I reference said overview and start typing up scenes and dialogue in a section above.

Anything I end up removing, instead of just straight up deleting it, I move it to the very bottom section which I label “cut stuff” and occasionally go down there to use an idea/line I’d thrown out because it didn’t fit, but found a new place for it to go where it does fit.

I also noticed I write everything in present-tense when it’s in the idea phase, then change practically everything to past-tense when I’m putting it into the actual fic.

Another thing I do is have the same paragraph pasted several times in a row with slight variations to lines so I can see which version looks best to me. I’m extremely particular about my wording; I have literally texted my sister to ask which of two words sounded better in a sentence. Many times. 😂 Part of the reason for that is because I don’t like using the same word twice within a few paragraphs when I can use a synonym. Like instead of “apple” a second time I’ll say like “the green fruit”, then “the healthy ingestible/the sour sphere” if I want to be funny. XD

I also have been blessed with a very active imagination; I have over 20 PiB fic ideas written down, most of which will never see the light of day, as it would take way too much time and energy to flesh them all out, lol (although if anyone wants to hear about them I’ll gladly show what I do have written for them~)

I’ll include a few pics for reference of what my fics look like while in varying stages of the writing process. (spoilers if you aren’t current on IDNFD or AFfaL btw)

(Also sorry I took so long to respond; I was in a car accident where I got T-boned by someone running a stop sign and had/have a bunch of bs [and pain] to deal with <.<)

Quick rundown on what this AU is real quick: so basically this is set 2 years in the future after the end of season 2, Shadow eventually becomes a part of team Sonic, and Rouge and Blaze exist in this universe. it also might be important to mention there’s not really an overarching plot, just shenanigans

There are a few important events though, but I have more detailed explanations of those in the parts themselves

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention this is basically a sonadow fic? oops. so yeah if that’s not your cup of tea here’s your warning. also very much slow burn, pining, mutual pining, the works (honorable mention background blazamy)

Do you have any tips on custom terraforming and custom trees? Or is there a specific YT chanel or blog you follow for advice yourself?? (Love your builds btw, I recently haven't had the energy or a good enough mood to play mc but it's always amazing to look through people's projects for my own inspiration).

 heyo! so it's a bit tricky to give advice on this kind of thing bc I more go with the flow until things start looking right, but I can offer some basic (and probably very vague) advice under the cut

for terraforming: think natural, organic shapes and avoid hard edges. this seems obvious but it can be hard to remember especially when making upward slopes/mountains etc.

^this is from literally 7 years ago bc I'm not at my new computer but it's a good example bc it's got good and bad things to it. you can see how at the bottom of the build it gradually slopes up from the water and then transitions pretty smoothly to a steeper slope, that's a pretty good example of how mountains can look. if you've taken algebra, think exponential graph type shiz. even if you have a steep cliff it usually doesn't rise completely vertical from the ground. you can see the area I circled does pretty much that, which makes it look out of place with the rest of the build. 

another good thing to keep in mind is block variation, which adds texture to the landscape. I've definitely gotten better at this over time through practice and watching other people build. the blocks you use are gonna vary depending on the biome/environment ofc, but I like to play around with multiple blocks w/ similar colors

depending again on your biome, greenery is always a plus. I tend to avoid using bonemeal to add grass/flowers/etc, because personally I don’t love the red/yellow color combo. as for custom trees, I typically make the trunk/branches first (using a combo of logs, wood planks, fences, stairs, slabs to get the right shape/colors) and then filling in leaves until it feels right lmao. 

I don’t really watch tutorials on building, but I do watch a few builder youtubers when I have time. GoodTimesWithScar is known for being a super talented terraformer with a lot of large-scale builds. (his current hermitcraft starter base is a really cool tree iirc, which might be good to check out!) BDoubleO100 is another inspiration of mine, and is really good at nailing fine detailing in building (his texturing has inspired me a LOT). in my last post with the castle, those pine trees were inspired by some he made in one of his videos. he just started a new season of his youtube building series, where he talks in depth about his build process––would totally recommend. through association I know lot of other hermitcraft members have great experience (GeminiTay PearlescentMoon Grian etc etc etc), so you can check them out too! 

big takeaway that I’m sure everyone’s heard before: practice makes progress woohoo yass! but it’s true, I’ve definitely seen improvement just by trial and error and experimenting with different things over time. also learning from other people can be super helpful as well. tools like worldpainter/worldedit/voxel aren’t necessary at all, but they’re sometimes super nice to use especially in the planning stages of building. if you’re able to download/willing to use them, there are a lot of youtube tutorials on how they work

this is a super general overview and I’d be glad to answer some more questions if you have any specific ones! just realized this has been sitting in my inbox for a few days and wanted to make sure I got back to you. again, I’m no expert and if anybody else wants to reply w/ extra advice feel free <3

ok but in seriousness i just read the first entries for crescendo and i actually love it so far. one of the biggest problems with trickster's original lore was that there was no explanation or reason to his actions or murders it was just kind of there because they needed a horror character. the story of his childhood is pretty generic but its still something that gives a bit more depth and hes started to shape up as a really solid character and i cant believe im going to say it because of how much i disliked all-kill on release but hes growing on me and hes becoming one of my favorite killers just because of how unique his story is and how much emotional involvement you can imagine between him and yun-jin and how that relationship shapes their time in the entity (favorite killers character wise, gameplay wise trickster can suck a whole dick and cock i have never liked playing/playing against him) and yun-jin hasnt gotten too much yet but what we got so far is really promising. i think the problem with a lot of newer survivors with these novel length stories are that despite getting an overview of their life and the context you get from it (<- not complaining btw), you never really know who they are as day to day people, and that's why i think yun-jin was different and a really good step in the right direction because despite not really having a lot of dialogue in her lore, you can still imagine who she is as a person by her actions. Like take Elodie who is still a great character and my secondary main; i have no idea who she is as a character. Like i know shes depressed but thats basically it, theres no implications to her characteristics, at least as an adult. thats why im really loving the tome entries so far because they just solidify yun-jins pre-existing personality, something that made her more unique that other survivors, and it just makes me love her even more. I love her interactions with trickster and while we only have three entires for her and they ended on her saying she was done with trickster, im excited to see how that relationship changes because of the way she holds him in the leaked ending videos. maybe she rekindles her interest for trickster and actually begins caring about him as a person and not as an asset to her career? can you imagine? character development? Also finally i just wanna talk about how much theyre talking about her interest in music. in her og lore it made it sound like she was more of a manager type instead of an actual music producer so the tome going in to detail about her love and emotion connection with creating and performing music is really exciting and part of the reason i even wanted to play her and became interested in her is because of the fact that she is a pop music producer and im a huge pop music nerd and audiophile so its just really fun to have a character in dbd reflect that instead of the only other musician we had in the form of a certain horse girl aligned individual

anyways very excited for the conclusion for yun and ji-woon and ill be simply ignoring the observer because i do not care about that fuddy bitch

I actually talked about this with some friends who were asking on my Discord about a week ago, so I hope you don’t mind me copying and pasting this discussion!

As a note: some of what I share below is personal. This is my personal life so I’ve kept it vague, and I don’t want to share details or involved parties online. You are 100% welcome to ask me more about a specific experience, but I may or may not share.

What I went through in my self-discovery doesn’t apply to everyone. We might share some experiences, we might not. 

To clarify my identity again: I’m aromantic asexual. I do not experience attraction at all, and I am culturally sex-positive/sex-neutral, and personally sex-repulsed. And I am out—my parents, family and friends, etc.

If you’d like to ask questions about these specific parts of my identity that I don’t go into detail in this post, please feel free.

(Also my identity journey went something along the lines of: straight, questioning/no label/allosexual, demisexual, asexual.) Also, sometimes on my blog casually I will describe myself as “ace” for both aro/ace or use “ace” as an interchangeable term for “aspec,” but this is not wholly accurate, it’s just the way that I sometimes use it because I am ace and I can do that.

being ace (my experience): 

Figuring out ur ace sometimes is kinda hard bc 

1) there is a spectrum 2) it's really easy to get caught up in ur own expectations/society 

because asexuality is a lack of attraction, sometimes it can be really confusing, and we end up trying to find something that’s not actually there. (or that may be there but different than what is heteronormative).

one of the main reasons i really figured it out was bc i dated someone, and i was not attracted to them romantically or sexually in any way at all. 

i didn't reciprocate the feelings even during the relationship - i tried to convince myself that it would happen but just never did, and i was uncomfortable (red flag) a lot about affection. 

my advice also is if you're thinking about romance/sex/relationship and it makes you uncomfortable/you can't picture yourself in the future (i.e. when you're older)/it happens forcefully instead of naturally that is, imo, a sign that you're aro/ace/respective aspec identity

now. i do not advise doing what i did. actually i strongly do not advise anyone to force yourself into a relationship or into any situation if you're unclear about your own wants and boundaries. most of all, listen to yourself. if something is making you uncomfortable, consider what about that experience is uncomfortable to you.

edit for clarity: obviously i didn’t know i was aroace at the time of entering that relationship, and it was not malicious intent on my end or “deception,” rather that i didn’t know myself then as well as i do now.

also to my one point (shown below) about "picking someone" tbh in hindsight i just think it's funny i have this really clear memory in elementary school where i was talking to my friend about crushes, and she asked me if i had a crush and i said no. so she asked if i had to have a crush on someone who it would be, so i was like "i guess this guy or this other guy?" basically because i thought they were funny/nice to me

also in hindsight after discovering that, here are things that i experienced that tipped me off:

 - making excuses* (i want to focus on academics, i don't want a relationship right now but maybe later, i haven’t really found someone i liked) - putting myself in a box/label to fit what other people thought (i have to like this person) - guessing about attraction (i guess if i had to be attracted to someone, i would be to this person) - repulsion/dislike* (i don't mind talking about/reading about other people's romance/sex lives, but i don't want to do it myself)

*asterisk is because like i said before, asexuality is a spectrum. and also some of these reasons are perfectly valid if you are attracted to someone! maybe you really do want to focus on academics or you don't like physical intimacy as a preference and that's valid too. edit for clarity: some aces are sex-positive and some aces are sex-repulsed. and some are neutral. 

btw, if you are aspec, you can still be attracted to people! it will just be a different experience from an allo person.

you don't have to have a label if you're unsure or if you don't want one or really any other reason, because your identity is your business and we discover new things about ourselves all the time. it’s okay if a year ago you thought you were gay but now you think you might be ace after all or vice versa, etc; that doesn’t invalidate your feelings or your experiences. there is no rush and no race.

2016!filodox: I swore on the Styx never to read another Riordan book after he killed Octavian. And yet here we are.

... Alright then! Let’s get started.

But first, a more detailed overview on how this series will work: I will excerpt bits and pieces of the books based on what I highlighted / annotated on my first read. Beneath each quote, I will share what I wrote in the annotation. Below that, I will (occasionally) laugh at my past self, clarify the note, or say how my view has changed.

I encourage questions, comments, and concerns (of which there may be many), so go ahead and use that replies feature if you feel so inclined! However, these are just my opinions and (occasionally) emotional reactions, so no hate pls. <3 (Or, if you do send hate, pls make it funny.)

As you can see, I had yet to experience Lester’s haiku and was already mad based on the table of contents alone. I went into this series very salty...

I was just,,,extremely ready to die on Octavian’s hill. (Though I was a huge Troy / Aeneas stan before all this, just to be clear.)

2016!filodox: I actually find this particular god crashing into a dumpster quite amusing.

I also blamed Apollo for what happened to Octavian. I think that had a lot to do with how Apollo acted on Delos in Heroes of Olympus, basically disowning Octavian and whining about how some “creature” scammed him? That was bullshit. Apollo needed to own the fact that he blessed Octavian, but he just abandoned him and denied all the blame. TL;DR I had a grudge, okay?

My mind stewed in confusion, but one memory floated to the surface -- the voice of my father, Zeus: YOUR FAULT. YOUR PUNISHMENT.

2016!filodox: Wait, is this bc everyone blames Octavian and therefore Apollo? Bc lol but also no?

*cough* Octavian did nothing wrong 2k16 *cough*

Zeus will reconsider, I told myself. He’s just trying to scare me. Any moment, he will yank me back to Olympus and let me off with a warning.

“Yes...” My voice sounded hollow and desperate. “Yes, that’s it.”

2016!filodox: Apollo is a self centered frat boy, I forgot...but it is slightly...endearing? *narrows eyes*

Ah, how close I was to stanning Lester in the first chapter, when he was at his most “goddy”. You know, I actually made a rule for myself when I started reading Trials of Apollo that I would not under any circumstances stan Apollo. That was a naive goal, because it was never really a danger.

Regardless, Zeus had held me responsible for Octavian’s delusions of grandeur. Zeus seemed to consider egotism a trait the boy had inherited from me. Which is ridiculous. I am much too self-aware to be egotistical.

I’ve always said I can see the future but an inch to the left. Also, I don’t like Ella.

It warmed my heart that my children had the right priorities: their skills, their images, their views on YouTube. Say what you will about gods being absentee parents; our children inherit many of our finest personality traits.

Apollo, when Octavian (or Nero, or Caligula) shows ambition: srry i don’t know him ??

He had a weak jawline, an overlarge nose, and a beard that wrapped around his double chin like a helmet strap. His hair was curly and dark like mine, except not as fashionably tousled or luxuriant. His lips curled as if he smelled something unpleasant. Perhaps it was the burning seats of the bus.

2016!filodox: Nero ???

Not quite sure how to feel looking back at this moment. Call out post @ myself for instantly recognizing Nero, when afaik this scene was before we had any hints that Roman emperors were even a plot point? But here’s the thing: I don’t remember why I could recognize him so easily. I don’t remember where 2016!me obtained this ancient Rome knowledge. A mystery.

On another note entirely, did Nero really like,,,astral project into Apollo’s fever dream to address him directly? Because Rhea does. And sometimes Python does. But Nero? Can he do that?

The man laughed as flames licked at his purple sleeves. “You’re not sorry yet, but you will be. Find me the gates. Lead me to the Oracle. I’ll enjoy burning it down!”

My only comment here is “oh you sweet summer child,,,”

Oh. Perhaps some of you are wondering how I felt seeing [Will] with a boyfriend rather than a girlfriend.

2016!filodox: No, actually. I wasn’t wondering. I was plotting how to kill you, them, and quite a few other people. Do you think I could trade you for Octavian?

Oh man, back at it again with the salt. XD

I could only remember my conversations with Octavian, the way he’d turned my head with his flattery and promises. That stupid boy...it was his fault I was here.

A voice whispered in the back of my mind. This time I thought it might be my conscience: Who was the stupid boy? It wasn’t Octavian.

2016!filodox: I can’t really...explain my emotions upon reading this. I’m still not quite okay, but this...it’s bittersweet in a way. I don’t know if this is a poor attempt at a proper closure, the author’s way of beating a dead horse, or just a way to make Apollo seem pitiable. Whatever it is... Octavian was important enough to remain in Apollo’s mortal memory. He somehow made promises to a god and had Apollo wrapped around his finger. And despite being so much like Apollo, the god blames him. Like everyone blames him. But Apollo also realizes, accepts on an infinitesimal scale, that “it wasn’t Octavian”. He wasn’t perfect, but neither is Apollo. Apollo is (at least) subconsciously admitting his own guilt in the whole affair.

...yeah. I will note that this bit isn’t meant to develop Octavian, but rather uses Octavian as a prop to support Apollo’s development? Which is why it still stings. Like thanks, I guess.

2016!filodox: Nero has made plenty of mistakes to learn from

Love how I just assumed it was Nero back in chapter 10 and went with it, zero hesitation. Also love how I heard Python say Nero has made mistakes and went “oh absolutely”. In fact, here’s something funny in retrospect that will become more and more apparent: I did not like Nero in 2016. Or, at least, I thought I didn’t. There’s something really odd going on here that baffles me, looking back...

“A triumvirate is a ruling council of three,” I said. “At least, that’s what it meant in ancient Rome.”

“Which is interesting,” Rachel said, “because of this next shot.” She tapped her screen. The new photo zoomed in on the building’s penthouse terrace, where three shadowy figures stood talking together....

2016!filodox: Is it bad that I’m smirking? Because it’s getting interesting ~ *clear malicious intent*

Wow, edgy. Triumvirates are just a neat, Roman thing and I stanned.

“The last triumvirate I dealt with included Lepidus, Marc Antony, and my son, the original Octavian. A triumvirate is a very Roman concept...like patriotism, skullduggery, and assassination.”

2016!filodox: THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN TRYING TO TELL EVERYONE. MODERN OCTAVIAN IS A VERY GOOD ANCIENT ROMAN. POLITICS, ESPECIALLY SHADY AF POLITICS AND POWERPLAYS, ARE QUINTESSENTIALLY ROMAN. Also, I’d like to note that it’s confirmed, in this universe’s canon, that Augustus was a son of Apollo.

Ohhhh, wait. I think I’d watched the HBO series Rome by 2016, which would at least partially explain my ancient Rome knowledge. (Amazing tv show btw!)

“Latin? Were they campers?”

Pete spread his hands. “I--I don’t think so. Paulie described them like they were adults. He said one of them was the leader. The other two addressed him as imperator.”

Anyway, a much better point here is like,,,the Imperial cult was huge in the ancient Roman world. Looking at Apollo’s explanation here, why did only the “worst” three emperors get to be immortal? Did famously “good” emperors like Augustus and Marcus Aurelius have the option of becoming minor gods, but they chose Elysium or something? Are there slightly less infamous emperors just hanging around anywhere as minor gods? A lot of Roman emperors live on in human memory is all I’m saying.

“Wait!” Will said as I reached the door. “Who is the Beast? Which emperor are we dealing with?”

“The worst of my descendants.” My fingers dug into the doorframe. “The Christians called him the Beast because he burned them alive. Our enemy is Emperor Nero.”

2016!filodox: I honestly can’t believe it took this long to reveal this? Was anyone surprised?

Nero’s reveal is rather late in the book compared to Commodus, Caligula, and even Tarquin iirc? But it makes sense, being the first book of the series. Also love how 16-year-old me was like “this reveal is silly because everyone, like me, recognizes Nero on sight” and didn’t question that assumption at all.

“Germani.” Instinctively, I moved in front of Meg. The elite imperial bodyguards had been cold-blooded death reapers in ancient Rome. I doubted they’d gotten any sweeter over the centuries.

2016!filodox: BITCH. See? This is why I love Rome. They knew what they were doing.

Ngl, as someone of Germanic heritage, I felt really represented by the Germani, which is hilarious on so many levels.

One of my criticisms of Trials of Apollo in general is just that the stakes are so much higher and Riordan usually solves that problem by having his heroes win on long odds. The chances of them succeeding at like,,,anything they attempt are astronomical, but of course they manage. It’s not surprising but it does get a little tiring.

Though it may seem like it, my annotations are not, in fact, a compilation of Nero’s greatest hits. There are a lot of scenes of his that I love (naturally) but I didn’t have anything to say about them when I first read the series. Maybe I’ll share those another time.

Sunny Sundays: Scoob

So as not to be too negative by always focusing on dumb webartists and their lack of taste in certain media or decent opinions, I decided that at least once a week I also want to talk about something more positive on my tumblr. Something about animation to enjoy, instead of using it as a bullet point for a sex fetish disguised as social awareness unlike someone else.

As such, lets talk about a little movie that came out this week on demand about a franchise that had goten rebooted more times than a certain timelord. At least that is what it feels like.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Scoob!

Scoob is the recent major entry into the Scooby Doo franchise and weirdly enough, though there is a ton of animated movies that came out for TV and on DVD, the the first animated feature of the franchise to actually be released in theaters. ... or rather it would be, if we didn’t live in a Stephen King novel, forcing Warner to release it on the internet for demand.

Now the Scooby Doo franchise is as of now pretty damn old. starting back in 1969 and having multiple incarnations of it over the years with the last succesfull one being the highly recommended “Mystery Incorporated”, which featured of all things the group not only dealing with their typical guys in masks each week, but also an ancient conspiracy involving a cosmic terror from another dimension, cameos of other famous Hanna Barbera characters and even good old Harlan Ellison having a cameo to. But some people with no idea how a good story trumps over shipping only know the show as having Velma and a girl that smells of hotdogs being shipped. If you do not belong to that group of people, I highly recommend you to watch it because it is really good. And certainly more entertaining than the shows that followed next, aka “Scooby Doo Go” and “Here is a show all about cameos being more obvious than in the old days”.

Anyway, what I try to say is, Scooby Doo despite being rather old and having been both mocked and appreciated over the years, is still very popular and can with the right amount of care and silly fun be at the very least an entertaining ride. So did this movie deliver on that, or did it become as disappointing as “Return to Zombie Island”?

I will try not to spoil too much in this “overview” about the movie, but  here is basically the deal: For starters, it is a Scooby Doo movie that misses one itsy bitsy major thing that actually makes a Scooby Doo story out on average. A mystery.

See, the movie first begins with a semi origin story for Scooby and the gang, which honestly is pretty damn adorable to watch. Shaggy meeting a stray Scooby as a pup, both becoming friends, meeting at Halloween Fred, Daphne and Velma for the first time and actually solving their very first mystery, all in the span of like 10 minutes? It is great and I would love to see an animated series about those alone. You know, a reboot of “A Pup named Scooby Doo”. Unfortunately, that is as far as we get with a “classic” Scooby Doo story as after the introduction, Simon Cowell essentially breaks the group apart and it becomes a Marvel superhero movie inspired flick.

Nope, I am not. Which btw, is actually not meant as a criticism.

Yeah see, Mystery Inc wants to be a more serious enterprise and so Simon Cowell has been brought on board to finance them, but only of Shaggy and Scooby leave. Which they do. After that dated cameo of a celebrity (Which actually feels rather in tone with the legacy of the franchise, if you think about the “good old days”) Shaggy and Scooby find themselves shortly thereafter being hunted by robots, only to be rescued by another famous Hannah Barbara character: The Blue Falcon and his trusty sidekick Dynomutt! Or rather Mark Wahlberg having to learn how to be a decent hero and the second best character in the entire movie.

The original Blue Falcon has retired and this Blue Falcon is the son of the original one who still has to learn how to be a smart hero instead of trying to be an “impressive” hero (in other words, Booster Gold’s showman aspects played up to 11) while Dynomutt has certianly become a bit of a deadpan snarker over the years. 

Anywa,y they have come to help Shaggy and Scooby, who are hunted by Dick Dastardly of Wacky Racers fame, who is after Scooby for some nefarious reason, as well as the heads of demon guard dog Cerberus, which if assembled will open the Gates of Hell. As such Shaggy, Scooby and the Blue Falcon group have to stop Dastardly and save the world, while the rest of the team tries to find out what happened to them and in doing so gets involved into the entire adventure too. An adventure field to the brim with references and major on screen cameos by Hanna Barbera characters, to the point the entire thing could also just be called  “Hanna Barbera Avengers assemble”.

This movie... it is weird but in some of the best ways possible. To get it out of the way, I do not think it is a very good kids movie storywise. As in, on one hand it does not have any despicable messages to it and there is actually a surprisingly high level of quality to it, on the other hand, it is not as if this movie has become the Hanna Barbera equivalent of Wall-E, Onward, How to train your Dragon or some Miyazaki flick. It is basically a Hanna Barbera crossover fanfiction as an animated feature, that reimagines the characters design wise slightly to look like ore accesable toys for kids to sell nowadays, than the orignal designs from the 70s and 80s. The plot as said abandons the mystery aspect completely for a saving the world from a comic book supervillain story, even with obligatory hole in the sky during the climax (seriously, when does Hollywood realize what kind of clichee it is) , third act break up between Scooby and Shaggy and out of nowhere “sacrifice” at the end. If you want more details on that, I recommend watching the movie or reading up on a 4chan post that goes around the net from a couple of months ago, when someone leaked the movie back then. Turns out that not everything on /co/ is garbage made up by others. Anyway, the plot is just not what you would expect from Scooby Doo. Which says a lot considering their direct to DVD features within the last years included also crossovers with the WWE and KISS. So you would expect it could not get weirder. But this movie kinda does, while also just having storystructure wise clichees to it you have seen a million times already in both better and worse features. And yet, if you like Hanna Barbera cartoons in general, I think you can find something in that movie. Not necessarily a good story from start to end, but just a entertaining Hanna Barbera cartoon, that is not quite as “dumb” as its source material but also does not try to be ultra serious and embraces the sort of humor it came from. If that however is not enough for you, and you want some very very deep story about social issues in animated form... well, I either suggest watching something not done by Disney you animation snob.

From a technical level now, I would say the movie is a bit more complicated to “review”. The voice acting is not horrible, but there are moments where the fact they got not the original cast to do the voices and instead give us celebrities like Zac Efron, is obvious. Some dialogues just don’t work as well as they should, but no one does a completely horrible job. Animation wise...

Well, it is a movie that does actually a good job getting the Hannah Barbera designs into a decent computer animated shape for the 21th century. It really feels like a Hannah Barbara cartoon on the screen. Unfortunately, when it comes to background characters....

...it feels only slightly above Miraculous Ladybug levels in my opinion. The animation is not all over the place, but you can see that it was not Pixar working on it. Which actually sorta brings up another “problem” with the movie. The problem being that as a whole it does not quite feel like it is a movie that belongs on the big screen. It is an entertaining animated movie, don’t get me wrong. But if I may be “snobish” for a moment, I think in terms of presentation and story it just doesn’t quite reach okay movie theater flick level. It is above what we should get from a made for TV or DVD production but just doesn’t reach the next level by a few inches. Which is sad, cause I think there was actually still a lot of effort put into it and a certain love of the source material. Or rather source materials, seeing how it is not just Scooby Doo here. And yet, despite its obvious flaws, including some really dated humor that made my eyes roll but is not breaking the movie for me... I recommend it. If you like Scooby Doo as a whole, I think you may like this one a lot. I just think that 20$ on demand is way too much. An animated serie sin that style however would suffice a lot Hope that piece of an opinion was helpful and that if you decide to watch it, you will have as much fun as I had (or even more) . And please don’t let me be the only one on this planet who thinks that of all the characters in it, Dick Dastardly is actually one, if not the most entertaining one. Cause heck, I liked him. And I never had imagined to see a heartfelt scene with him as a central character.

Avoiding manipulation from salespeople

This post is lengthy, here’s the short version: My mom managed to get scammed into buying overpriced cosmetics by a very aggressive and well-trained saleswoman. I’ll break down how that happened so you won’t fall for it. Tl;dr: These people are trained professionals, being rude (i.e. not showing interest, breaking off the conversation) is okay. Physically walk away if you don’t want to buy something.

Below is a description of what happened. At the end I’ll draw a conclusion and also break down how sales people usually work, so you have an easy overview.

This is written from an autistic PoV with autistics in mind, but I appreciate all reblogs so people can get informed.

Autistic people are frequently bullied into compliance. Being rude is physically painful. That makes us susceptible for manipulation. Even worse: Sales people are trained for hours on end to make sales to neurotypicals, and often succeed, so we’re especially at risk. Their most effective weapon is the duty to be polite: Most people won’t walk away from a conversation because it’s rude. They exploit that. Your most effective counter-weapon is the knowledge that the worst that can happen is a few awkward seconds. You are the customer, you are in control. They try to bully you into doing what they want by enforcing social norms and try to win you over. It feels like shit at the moment, but you can walk away. Nobody will physically try to hold you back, and if they do, you’re legally allowed to hit them (okay, I’m not sure about the last part, but they won’t, I promise.)

Here’s what happened:

My mom and I were in a fashion outlet in the Netherlands. The centre is built like a tiny pedestrian zone with normal-looking houses that are stores and restaurants. We’re just walking along when a woman comes up to us from a store. The store was mostly empty, but in a designer-way, not a clothes store. She gave my mom a free sample of something, but the second my mom hesitated she asked us in. (Up to this moment I didn’t see everything I was planning to just go on.)

Pro tip 1: If you don’t want to buy anything, walk away. DO NOT enter. Just say, “sorry I’m in a hurry” and BAIL.

My mom was in before I could say anything. The lady was selling products from a cosmetics brand... let’s think of a nice name... “D§C - Deep Sea Cosmetics”. Sounds like a nice, made-up name, right? Maybe go google it to make sure I didn’t accidentally name a real brand, right? Anyway, the lady wanted to sell us some scrub thing that makes your fingernails shiny, but primarily a box with all this nail stuff for like 80€. But because it was the “outlet price” she only wanted 50€ for it. My mom said 50€ is too much and asked if she could think about it and come back later.

Pro tip 2: Don’t “ask” them to think about it. That leaves them in control. Use imperative sentences “I’ll think about it” - then leave, don’t stand around looking unsure.

Overall, the lady was very friendly, she asked us if we were German, said some stuff about herself (she was French, has a German husband and speaks good German, four kids. Looked a bit young for 4 kids but what do I know.) This is a common tactic to make the salesperson seem more likeable by sharing personal details. Another sales dude at my college coerced me into a (thankfully free) short time subscription to a newspaper by playing the pity card (“I only get paid for the sales I make”.) She asked my mom if she smoked (yes) and then promoted this gel that prevents the fingernails from going yellow. Salespeople will latch onto any information you give. They talk very fast and don’t allow breaks so you can think critically. By that point she’d whipped out her samples and was polishing my mom’s nails. She also did mine, despite me being visibly uncomfortable (that’s their job - they make people uncomfortable so they can sell stuff.) If you don’t want to be touched, say so. Or just physically back away a bit. Again, they’re relying on you being too uncomfortable to break social norms. You do not owe them anything. 

Pro tip 3: If you’re very insecure, try not to get dragged into promotions. Best is not to enter the store at all. Again, “that’s cool brah” (or the more polite form of it) and leaving will do.

My mom showed herself impressed by how shiny her nails were. (My mom, while usually being deft at life-stuff is the most gullible fucking person when it comes to shopping. Please learn from that.)

Pro tip 4: If you show interest, they know they got you. Interest is everything from stopping, to coming in or seeming unsure what to say (even if you KNOW you don’t want to buy). Again, walking away is your best bet.

Eventually, when it was clear that we weren’t buying the package like this, she whipped out the figures. 1) This stuff isn’t available in Europe, it’s from the US (correct). 2) People buy this for 120$ a box (couldn’t verify - the box isn’t available on the web shop) 3) The polish stone costs 40$ alone (Lie)

She asked me if I was a student, my mom said yes. She then offered us a “student discount” - the stone for 30$ and the gel on top of it for “free”. My mom bought it.

Here’s the real facts: 1) The stone costs 12.95$ on the web shop 2) The gel costs 14.95$ on the web shop

Would it have been more expensive to buy it online? Yes (because you’d need to ship it to Germany) Did she lie to us about the student discount and the real prices? Also yes.

Pro Tip 5: Check your facts yourself. Don’t expect them to tell the truth (this goes for any kind of ad.)

Btw, the reviews on US sales are similar: Products are okay, but totally overpriced and the salespeople are extremely aggressive.

Summary: Salespeople are trained to seem likeable, but they will lie as much as is necessary to get a sale. When she couldn’t sell her stuff over the regular price, she made up a student discount to sell it at the regular price. Don’t believe a word they tell you, google it yourself. We’re trained to stay and listen because that’s what is polite. Sales people prey on that. Be brash. I know it feels shitty at the moment, and it’s hard, but they're not your friends, they’re predators. You don’t owe them anything. You know what happens if you walk away? Nothing. They can’t do shit about it. Prepare a script if you need it, stick with it.

Conclusions:

1) Your best bet is to walk away. Don’t stop, just move on. They’re trained to play on your pity, on your friendliness and self-esteem. Walk away. Script: “Sorry I’m in a hurry.” / “No thank you.” 2) Don’t get lured to a store or stand, and if you do, always remind yourself that YOU are in control. They don’t want to give you time to think because then reason sets in. You can still walk away. Avoid rhetorical questions. Script: ”Thanks but I’ll need to think about it.” Then leave. (If you stand there as if you’re undecided, they still got you.) 3) Don’t use rhetorical questions, don’t argue. They’ll try to put you into a position where you’re trying to justify why you’re not buying. Don’t fall for it. You don’t owe them shit. 4) Tbh never buy stuff after a presentation. Just don’t. You’ll have plenty of time to check whether or not the prices they named are true. And if you want to buy something, you can always come back another day and they won’t remember you. You’re just one of hundreds of customers.

How do they hook you?

1) They start a conversation, often with free samples. If you’re not interested, don’t stop, just pretend you didn’t hear or say you’re in a hurry. Don’t stop or they got you. 2) They’ll ask you inside. Again, don’t. Just say “sorry, no time”. Leave immediately, don’t wait for their answer. 3) They make conversation, trying to get on your good side. Usually they take in your appearance and guess basic stuff like likes and hobbies from it. They’ll try to show you that you have things in common - this is the basis of a connection. It’s harder to walk awayn from someone that you feel connected to, even if it’s minimal, than from a total stranger you barely looked at. 3.1) They try to confuse you. They talk extremely fast to dominate the conversation and don’t give you time to think. They’re trained to manipulate your responses. Nothing they say is natural, it’s all scripted. Remember that. 4) They show you samples (e.g. the nail thingy). They try to make you want the thing you didn’t know existed five minutes ago. Shiny doesn’t mean good. 5) They’ll present an offer. This often includes making you believe that if you buy it somwhere else it’s way more expensive or hard to get - they often cite exorbitant prices to make their own overpriced offer seem more attractive. Important: Watch out for “sympathy discounts” - they will rarely sell the product far under the regular price. If you can, get a glance at their monitor, the system doesn’t lie, it shows the store prices.

Take-home message: Their most effective weapons are social norms. There’s a reason brash, aggressive people are usually more successful. Don’t fall for their bullshit. They’re not your friends, they just want your money. The only thing stoping you from walking away is your own head. Prepare a script before going into malls or bring an instructed and trusted friend if you’re unsure. It gets easier after a while.

no, not at all. i think anyway. i can’t say i got a perfect overview on usa school politics really. but because the swedish school system is very different form the usa i doubt its the same debate.

the arguments are all about which type of structural approach the different parties want to have to swedish school system. it should be noted, all schools in sweden are financed via tax - money, and therefore to different degrees under direct state control (although there is a difference between kommunal skola and friskola, but that is for the advanced course of swedish school system ;P).

there is some basic differences to the approach to school politics in the different swedish parties. now the swedish parliment got 8 parties (i think... honestly, i am bad at remebering numbers, dyscalculia), so going through all of their stand points would be. too much and too long.

simplified, and with no regard to whatsoever to what some swedish politicans or another said last week about this forever over - talked subject, but on basic ideological outlook

the democratic socialists (and the enviroment party which can never make up it mind of were they stand)

the social democratic party typically want the same school system for the entire population. no private and/or indepent schools. but most important, everyone should go out with the same knowledge from school EVEN from secondary school (which is not obligatoric). the core value here is that all kids should be able to use the grades from their secondary school to go to uni. therefore the social democratic party is traditionally against things like secondary school which teaches one a (working class) proffesion, because the consider that too deepen class divide among the population.

the socialdemocratic ideal of the school was (historically, this is kinda oldish now) to use the school to minimaze class. that (used) to be the core of their politics. therefore private schools was actually ,with a few exception, illegal in sweden in the past. also, one were not allowed to choice which school your kids went to blahblah

(this was like 20+ years ago. it should be noted that the socialdemocratic party both build AND then later deregulated the school system. they kinda, changed their view majorly on this subject in the 1990s..... but god lets not get into THAT. so messy, so much. they were actually the ones that made the school go from state goverend, to locally goverend forexemple... also there is so much Problematic Things to discuss about the difference between the social democratic parties officals ideals about education and their actual politics historically, but i digress)

after deregulation of the swedish school system the schools can now be run by capitalist companies which earn profit. and because all swedish school is tax financed it means that that those indepent schools (börsnoterade friskolor) get their profit from swedish tax money. this makes, vänsterpartiet (=the left party. also democratic socialists, but more socialist than the democratic socialist.), mad. so mad. 

vänsterpartiet party leader Jonas Sjöstedt thinks the entire “private capitlist companies making profit from tax money that should really be spend on the kids” thing is the worst thing that ever happened (well, second worst, after being betrayed by prime minister löfven, that backstabbing player). i do agree with this. but they have been saying this now for about 8 years, so. i am not feeling up for hearing it again, even if jonas sjöstedt got a very calming voice.

Miljöpartiet (the enivorment party)

miljöpartier (the enviroment party) which is also in the goverment (with the socialdemocrats), most likely have some kind off view, i have not looked it up. historically they used to support the existence of independ schools (friskolor), which vänsterpartiet heavily disliked (vänster historically wanting all schools to be in the same state goverend system. but i  am not up to date on their current view on this).

the liberal and conservative block, the right - wing parties. (its considered the same block in sweden yes....)

more grades, more possibilites to make profit in school, even more grades, tougher school, dreams about a “golden socialdemocratic” epoch of education that never existed.

becuase of this, that they are conservative in such a way that they want to GO BACK to the past of education, they amusingly sometimes sound MORE socialist about education than the social democratic party.

ok, if i am being a bit less biased haha, there big thing is that one should be able to choose if one wants to go to a secondary school education which gives one acces to university or not. basically, they want to have 2 school system, one secondary school if one wants higher education afterwards and 1 secondary school if one wants to learn a trade. in their model trade secondraty school do not give acces to univeristy. in the social democratic model trade secondrary school still exist, but it ALSO gives you the same acces to university as not going to a secondrary school that teaches you a trade.

Okay so this belongs as a part of my CrimeBoy Reincarnation Soulmates Au. 

This is one of their lives. It is a Fantasy-ish Royal au.

So starting with roles…

Wilbur: Prince

Tommy: Wilbur's personal knight/guard

Niki: Chef

Puffy: Pirate

Ranboo: Town Seamstress

Tubbo: Town Blacksmith

Niki and Puffy are soulmates. They actually are married this Au. Niki is the Royal cook and Puffy is a pirate so they see each other twice a month.

Tubbo and Ranboo are married here. They did it so they could own their shops and house. 

So after those snippets of others in this Au. On to the main people of this Au.

Wilbur is 8 years older than Tommy in this life. Wilbur saw Tommy grow up from birth onwards.

Wilbur is the only prince of this country so the King, Queen, and the Queen's sister had Tommy be raised to protect him.

Wilbur has some training in fighting but he is mostly taught in diplomacy and everything he would need.

Tommy is taught basic stuff but for the most part he is taught how to fight and kill since he was 8 years old (Wil is 16). Before that him and Wilbur would just play.

Guess what. Tommy and Wilbur are bio brothers. Neither known as Tommy is illegitimate (King and Queen's sister).

Wilbur wasn't allowed to leave the castle grounds until Tommy was 14 years old. That was so Tommy would be able to protect him.

Wilbur had been betrothed to a Lady named Sally since he was 8 and she was 10.

Sally and her Family would visit Wilbur's castle. Wilbur in this lifetime did not love Sally (it is because she isnt a fish /j /j).

Sally when she married Wilbur she wasn't allowed to leave the castle either.

(Sally is a Fish hybrid. Wilbur is a fox hybrid and so is Tommy)

They married when Wilbur turned 16 years old. They didnt do anything with that till he was 17 and got her pregnant with their first child.

Their first child is Milo (New Milo from Wilbur's Skyblock Challenge). He is a Fish Hybrid like his mother. He is a well behaved child. He is the heir after Wilbur.

Next kid they had was Fundy. He is a Fox Hybrid (duh) like his Father. He is a chaotic child. If he has a kid before Milo has any kids, Fundy's would be heir.

Tommy would hang out with Ranboo and Tubbo when he was younger and when he had days off.

(Btw this Royal Au will be expanded. I am just overviewing)

When Tommy is 23 years old an assassin breaks in and attempts to kill Wilbur and does Kill Sally. Tommy gets there in time to stop Wilbur from dying.

The kingdom goes into mourning for Sally and the King has a investigation has to whl attempted to murder his son. It was another kingdom so they declared war.

The other kingdom really shouldn't have tried to kill Wilbur. However the king is an awful ruler and person.

Tommy stays in the castle with Wilbur (31), Milo (13), and Fundy (5) and protects them.

Tubbo and Ranboo had adopted twins Michael and Michelle when they turned 20. The Twins are 6 years old.

With war being declared Tubbo and Ranboo write a letter to Tommy saying their goodbyes and the pack up and run.

They will tell stories of Tommy to their kids and grandkids for years because they never see Tommy again. They never get to see someone they had known for 20 years at that point.

(Oh yeah Tommy was aloud out and about the town because he wasn't a Prince)

The war goes on for 5 years. The other kingdom is winning. Tommy never leaves the castle. Wilbur remarried to a butler in their castle at year 2 of the war (it is Friend) and Milo loves him and Fundy is eh on him.

Skipping to the end of the war Wilbur told Tommy to run and take Milo (18) and Fundy (10) somewhere safe. Tommy argues his job is to protect him but Wilbur says he would rather his children be protected. Wilbur also tells him to bring Friend with them.

So Tommy runs with all of them. Friend sacrifices himself to keep Tommy and his kids safe. Tommy manages to run into a small village way out of the way. 

Wilbur and Friend (and the King, Queen, and her sister) get excited by the enemy nation. The enemy nation takes the crown and wants them to find the kids and kill them.

The kids never get found. Tommy, after hiding in the village for half a year, rides with Milo and Fundy to a different kingdom that is 3 months away.

Tommy tells them who these kids are. This kingdom agrees to allow refuge to them.

In the next 2 ½ years Milo marries a Lady (upper class) and lives comfortably. Tommy gets ill. He didn't eat or take care of himself well for 5 years plus this 3 years. Tommy, realizing he is dying because of that illness, tells Milo. Milo takes in his 13 year old brother.

End of the overview of the Crimeboys side of this au. I will go into more detail of this au with crimeboys and focus a little bit on Puffy and Niki; also Ranboo and Tubbo.

API 101 - EventBrite Events in Northeast

First time working with an API for sourcing data

So I've heard the term "API" thrown around a LOT and knew how it worked in concept, but never actually did it myself. Here's my attempt. I took these notes as I was doing it, so some steps might be unclear, but hopefully I covered most of the basics.

Challenge 1: Finding API provider & Getting an API Key

** You will need a URL to input and acquire a key. I didn't delve deep into it but you could create a URL that points to your localhost machine. As that seems to take the ID of the host/server you're connected to, it's not quite as flexible as a web URL.. I might be totally wrong here. I went the URL route (put in a random blog I had) because I was afraid that a local host will be tied to my immediate internet connection - as I'm not working from my regular internet connection, I didn't want to have to request a potentially new local host… If anyone has more material on this would love to learn more.

** You will want to use / copy the PRIVATE API KEY. In EB that means you need to click on the arrow down to expand the menu and select the 2nd option -- the code visible immediately on the page without expansion is *not* the right code and does not provide proper OAUTH authorization. I'm assuming that's the difference between an "API KEY" and an "API Token" but just my guess here.

Searching for an API, I stumbled upon Rapid API first and wanted to figure out how to use it. Unfortunately, it is NOT a one-stop-shop for API use. -- Rapid API actually confused me from the get go -- it simply allows you to test whether the connection is OK. Or I don't understand how to use it which is very, very possible too… IMHO You're better off going to the API website itself and mining from there or using R…

-- What IS nice about RAPID API: 1)  It can provide you with a URL for API authentication (if you don't have a website or local host to use). 2) It DOES have quite a nice library of free & fremium APIs which is nice to browse/double check/search for other interesting datasets (but again I couldn't figure out how to actually see the data from there) 3) And 3) It does provide a dashboard for your API Calls - which will help you stay within limits (provided you do it thru them though I think). So overall, Rapid API = nice resource but NOT where you get the actual info (at least I wasn't able to figure out how), so not a panacea if that's what you're looking for (which I was).  

--> For example, I will most likely repeat this for Meetup data. Also found promising API by the folks developing Robby.AI (https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/hypecal#section-overview) but couldn't find a way to get an API key to their dataset - hopefully soon.

Challenge 2: Using the API / Getting your data

The end result from your effort of acquiring a token, finding an API etc should be a LINK URL that you can paste into your browser which will show you the data that you want in an ugly, unformatted way.

What this allows me to do is: • Mine events that I'm interested in and create a list for myself without having to copy paste all this information into a spreadsheet • Visualize the data in any shape or form I wish • Connect and merge with other data sources, like Meetup API, potentially my calendar data etc.

Introduction to Genetic Engineering: Part 2

Today’s topic: Horizontal gene transfer in nature

Now, horizontal gene transfer in nature isn’t in itself genetic engineering, however a lot of the mechanisms have been used for it, so better explain it now, in a fairly concise form.

Now, first things first, what is horizontal gene transfer (HGT)?

It’s also called ‘lateral gene transfer (LGT)’ and is the opposite of vertical gene transfer (VGT), VGT is what happens in normal inheritance patterns. You have genes that you got from your parents that they got from their parents and so on. It’s called ‘vertical’ because if you’re looking at a family tree, you’re moving up and down, read: vertically.

HGT now is the transfer outside of that, from one already existing organism is another. Say, if you could transfer a gene from your cousin to you, that would be HGT. 

In nature, this is most common among prokaryotes (which is also where it’s annoying as all fuck for humans, but more on that in a second). Now, as I told you in the first part of this series, in bacteria (which are prokaryotes), the DNA is just a twisted up loop swimming around the cytoplasm. That’s true. However, some bacteria have something like a other, smaller loops of DNA swimming around inside them, too. This smaller loop is called a ‘plasmid’. Depending on the specific nature of the plasmid, they can be very common inside the bacterium’s cell (high copy) or rather more rare (low copy). If they’re the right kind, they can be copied without any input from the main bacteria DNA.

Now, why are we talking about this when the topic if HGT? Well, some bacteria have the mean-ass ability to exchange whole or partial plasmids. What happens is essentially that one bacterium grows like a little ‘arm’ that attaches to another bacterium. That ‘arm’ is called a pilus. The pilus attached to the other bacterium and draws them together, so far as they cells are not just snuggled up to one another, they’re open. Things can be transferred from one cell to the other. And that’s where the plasmids come in. Basically, a plasmid rolls up to the touching point of the two cells (called a ‘conjugation bridge’) and gets replicated there, but instead of of the new singe strand staying inside the cell it came from, it worms over into the new cell. The two bacteria cells part ways again, but now they both carry the same plasmid.

Now, these plasmids can carry all sorts of information, but they can be broadly grouped into five kinds: Fertility (allows the new donor to make a pilus of their own), Resistance (to toxins or antibiotics, and here you can start to see why this is a problem), Virulence (makes an otherwise harmless bacteria into a pathogene, the other reason this is a problem), Col (which allows the bacterium to kill other bacteria) and degradative (which allow the digestion of substances the cell otherwise wouldn’t be able to digest).

These plasmids exist because they provide some sort of evolutionary benefit to the bacterium in question, under the right circumstances. 

Other bacteria don’t need the transfer like this but can instead absorb ‘free’ DNA strands that they just sort of come across as they swim around in whatever medium they’re swimming around in. 

Now, how common is HGT under prokaryotes? A fuckton. Depending on which group of prokaryotes you’re looking at, up to 15% of their genes (here) can come from HGT, which makes family trees for them an absolute nightmares. Think less ‘tree’ and more ‘confusing ivy covered blackberry brambles’.

Now this, and the ‘just vaccum up DNA you happen across’ (called Transformation, btw)  approach are just two ways that HGT can happen in prokaryotes. 

Another one is called Transduction and uses viruses and there are two kinds, broadly speaking:

general transduction and specific transduction

The general kind if s a little faster to explain. Basically, the virus hits a bacterium, injects its DNA into it and the viral DNA hijacks the cells mechnisms to 1) cut up the bacterial DNA into small bits and 2) build proteins for more viruses. 

Once that is all done, the DNA snippets of the virus get packaged into the virus proteins, the cell bursts and the cycle starts anew. Now, in this soup of ‘many random small DNA bits some of which are virus and some of which are bacterium’ it can happen that instead of viral DNA, bacterial DNA just stuffed into the virus protein shell. If that protein shell now lands on another bacterium and injects that DNA, the DNA can potentially insert into the new bacteria cell, and you moved genes from cell A to cell B without A or B being anywhere close to one another.

Now, the second kind of transduction, the specific kind is a touch more complicated because the viruses here are a touch more complicated. Instead of being injected into the cell and just chopping up the host DNA, they insert into it. The viruses can do this only at specific regions of the genome that vary from virus to virus (HPV does that! which is how it causes cancer.) and once it’s inserted, the viral DNA can stay there for a good long while and every time the cell divides, it also copies the viral DNA along which its own (which is great for the virus, because it’s zero effort!). Now, if the cell the virus is sitting in gets stressed, this can activate the viral DNA again. The now active DNA proceeds as in the picture above, hijacks the bacterium’s mechanics to built its own proteins, kills the cell and fucks off to greener pastures. However, since the viral DNA was inserted in the bacterial DNA, it has to be cut out again. If that cut out is a bit imprecise, it’s possible that more or less small bits of bacterial DNA get cut out alongside, packaged, and sent to the next host cell. So, this is called specific transduction, because only the genes right next to the insertion side of the virus can get transferred that way, instead of ‘random bit of DNA’. 

Now, viruses don’t just happen to bacteria, they happen to all of us, and accordingly, horizontal gene transfer via viruses can happen to all of us, too. But not just that. There’s a bacterium that’s know for lobbing its own DNA into plants. It’s called Agrobacterium tumefaciens  and we’re going to talk about in detail in the future because boy is this bacterium important to GMing of plants. Or at least it was, we got newer techniques now. But, important anyways, will get its own post.

We also know that horizontal gene transfer happened between at least one fungus and an aphid (here), bacteria and nematodes (here), bacteria and insects (here) and - drumroll please - between bacteria and humans (especially often in cancer cells, go here).

So, honestly, HGT is a lot more common than people think (if they think of it at all) and has been driving evolution for a longass time. Hell there are cases where organisms seems to have made it a career movie to beg, borrow and steal genes that they can use (here). It’s part of what makes antibiotic resistances such a bitch and proper hospital hygiene so important and it’s been happening to all of us at some point, most likely. 

So, that concludes our quick overview on how horizontal gene transfer works in nature. Next up: we start on GM breeding methods! What did we do, how did we do it, is it still in use?

1. Learn DevOps tools

For a modern Java developer, knowledge of DevOps is essential. He should be at least familiar with continuous integration and continuous deployment and how Jenkins helps to achieve that.

 It becomes even more important for senior Java developer who often is responsible for setting coding best practices and creating environments, build scripts and guidelines.

 I also suggest you spend time and learn more about DevOps in general and tools like Docker, Chef, Kubernetes etc along with Maven and Jenkins.

 If you need some resources then Learn DevOps: CI/CD with Jenkins using Pipelines and Docker in Udemy is probably the best course to start with. You will not only learn about CI and CD but also about Maven and Jenkins in depth.

 2. Learn Java Better

This is the most important thing for a Java developer right now. Java is constantly updated and now with every new version in 6 months, it's a big challenge to keep yourself up-to-date. I have been learning  Java 10 features and  I know many programmers who have not written a single line of code using Java 8 features like lambdas and Stream API.

 Unfortunately, most of them are experienced Java developer with good 7 to 10 years of experience in their belt. I understand that at some point in your career learning becomes slow but if you don't act now you will be left behind.

I feel somewhat underqualified to make statements about the field of physics as a whole (although I obviously have a mountain of totally unsupported opinions on the matter). I’m assuming you’re more interested in the downsides of a physics major, of which I think there are many. There are a lot of different directions in which you could go with that kind of question, so it obviously depends on your circumstances. As with all choices, the decision about what to major in is more about how various majors compare, so it would be useful to know what matters to you, what your likes and dislikes are, what your plans for after graduation are (or what you’re considering), etc. I’ll try to give a broad overview of my opinions on this question that are hopefully useful to anyone considering physics, but feel free to resubmit with more details and I’ll try to think in more detail.

Right up top I just want to make it clear that there are definitely gonna be mixed opinions if you ask different people. I probably have a less common view of the department than most people, but I will try to keep this unbiased. The most common thing people will tell you is that it’s hard. Indeed this is true, but this also depends on the person. I am convinced that physics is easier for me than english or comp lit would’ve been, it’s just about what skill set you have. It’s also important to keep in mind that it’s easier to do 20 hours of work that you want to do than 5 hours of work that you don’t. Now, there are probably going to be a lot of frustrating moments, no matter how motivated you are. Even if you save yourself a lot of the struggling by working in groups, there are going to be times when profs assign shitty problem sets that send you on an hours long search for information. Indeed, this is one of the things that I hate about physics. A lot of the stuff we learn is so fucking hard that it’s out of the question that you’ll be deriving it, so you run into problems where you’re simply lacking necessary information, which is just frustrating and unnecessary. Say what you will about math, but at least you usually know what the problem is asking and you have all the information you need. More broadly though, if you’re interested in getting the stuff down and doing well on tests, you’ll probably have to spend considerable time on it (unless you’re off the charts smart).  

There’s also the problem that most of what you learn is not really the stuff that people get excited about in physics. Real physics is very detailed and relies a lot on math and stuff that you don’t want to think about, so it might be a departure from the kind of excitement you can get from youtube videos and pop science. Over long periods, you might see things coming together in a really exciting way, but most of what you learn is pretty benign and you’ll forget after a year unless you go back and review or you’re still using it regularly. We won’t name names, but a certain McFly may have forgotten a very basic derivation that’s EXTREMELY relevant to his work this summer and looked like a dumbass in front of his grad student mentor. In a good class like 208, you’ll use the math to build intuition about one of the most marvelous discoveries in physics (and indeed I recommend that everyone try to take that class if they can), but in a class like 301, where the level of approximation is off the charts and you’re using a less than ideal book (lmao like an ideal gas cause its thermo) and all the problems are from said book, you might skim over some stuff and end up not making good connections. Really the problem is that if you’re a physics major you have to take a lot of classes, but if you do something else you can just focus on the ones that interest you, so that flexibility is nice. 

In terms of like mental health, there are definitely gonna be a lot of opinions about that, so I’ll try to tread lightly. I know PUWIP (I think that’s what it’s called) makes a really big effort to offer support (especially for marginalized groups) and I’ve heard nothing but excellent things about them, so there are good resources. It is, however, difficult to feel like a moron/failure on such a regular basis and to constantly feel defeated. Of course, this doesn’t apply to everyone, but I’ve definitely had a lot of those moments. Heck, there was a semester where every Sunday I’d get started on my problem set for this one class, and I’d end up spending between ten and ninety minutes just lying on the ground and trying to wrap my head around the depths of my incompetence. Looking back it really wasn’t a big deal, but it’s hard in the moment. Btw, if you ever feel like that, plz write in and I will tell you all the things I didn’t do that I should’ve. But anyway. Physics can really make you question your own ability a lot, so it’s important to have a plan for dealing with that. It’s definitely not made easier by the fact that the department is full of very smart folks. I actually feel like there’s a really great culture of being open about hardship in physics, but it can still be hard not to feel inadequate. 

I can’t really say much about independent work, but it’s hard to say anything about it anyway. It fluctuates so much by prof/project and you just have to decide for yourself if that’s something you enjoy. That can be a hard thing to figure out, but if you’re considering physics then spend the summer after freshman year in an interesting lab and see what it’s like.

Aside from this, there are some minor considerations like the fact that physics is AB so you’d have to fulfill those distribution requirements and whatever, but I don’t have any insight about that kind of stuff. Honestly there are probably points I’ve missed in this, so sorry in advance if this isn’t what you were looking for. 

If you’re not interested in reading all of the above, I guess my main message is that I recommend against physics as a major. It will almost certainly make your experience at princeton less pleasant than it would’ve been otherwise and for what? You’ll learn some cool stuff, but you could’ve learned most of the broad points on your own or taken those classes anyway. It’s not like it’ll do you a lot of good for post college plans. You’ll probably be more qualified than most to apply to physics grad school (although it’s not clear why you’d want to do that either), but math majors get into physics all the time, so you’re not really closing that door. Hell, I think Ed Witten studied History or something in undergrad. Of course, if you’re psyched about physics research, then you’ve probably found the right major. But if you want to end up in software, finance, consulting, clownery, you probably would’ve been better prepared having spent your time elsewhere. It’s true that physics is an acceptable major for a wide range of jobs because the skills tend to be applicable, but I can assure you that COS skills are more applicable if you’re applying for a job in software engineering. 

Obviously, when it comes down to a case by case basis, I think there are a lot of good reasons to major in physics (or else I wouldn’t do it lol), but this is my advice for a general interlocutor. Also, I’ve said it before, but don’t take what I say too seriously.
