Sorry but I think you’re being super negative about the whole “Rachel Presents” announcement.

Rick Riordan is a white author who is passionate about mythology. After Greek mythology and briefly going into egyptology, he used his influence to give People of color a chance to write modern mythology stories from their own culture and experiences—and most importantly he stayed in his lane.

I think Rachel choosing to step back and give other people a voice is a great outcome, considering you guys all joked about how horrific it would be if she tried to appropriate another culture in her next series.

You also said she should have given LO to another creator who had the passion and dicipline to finish for her. That’s ESSENTIALLY what she’s going to be doing with RP. Maybe her true calling is just…being an Idea guy. She has wonderful concepts and cool ideas, but lacks commitment. In this scenario, we could end up with super amazing stories, with proper editing from Random house and proper commitment from new creators. I don’t really see the issue here, everyone wins.

(And lots of authors do the whole “___ presents” format. I don’t think she deliberately copied RR. Most likely her books sales did well and Penguin House approached her with this offer.)

lmao what? I was against the folks saying she should give it to another creator. I don't think not liking the series should mean she's obligated to "give it to someone else." The series is hers and so it's her responsibility to finish it. I do think she should have ended it a long time ago or if she was really miserable making it then she should step away, but she shouldn't be giving it to someone else to finish for her just because "boo you suck at writing your own comic". She started this, she should finish it.

And this is literally her doing exactly that - appropriating other cultures - with extra steps. Just instead of being on the front lines with her own work, she's sponsoring other works based on her own bar for quality (which we know is EXTREMELY low) and slapping her name on them so she can take a "backseat". It's really icky to see from a creator who practically failed upwards and is now using "herself" as a selling point, when she has no real legitimacy outside of LO, which was only as successful as it was because of WT constantly sinking money into it and advertising it over other series on the platform (and because it's based off a story that was VERY popular to romanticize at the time, the H x P myth. Like it was literally what was popular on Tumblr when it started as a hobby comic on Tumblr.)

I'm outlining all of these posts with "speculation" because obviously I don't know what's really going on behind the scenes here, but I think it's really disingenuous of Rachel to sell herself as some top tier brand name for mythological works as a whole when she's caused so much actual harm to the Greek myth community and its sources. It's furthering the notion that she has any credibility as a "folklorist" when really she just pulls whatever comes off the front page of Google. And the similarities between herself and Rick Riordan do matter here because of how commonplace it is these days for Rachel to rip off other works rather than take inspiration and make it into something that's organically her own.

That's my two cents. It's not me trying to be "negative", it's me being genuinely concerned over the blatant appropriation from a white woman gaining even more control over the depictions of cultures and mythologies that she claims she's educated on and isn't. Unlike Rick Riordan, Rachel does not have any formal education in the subject she's claiming to be educated about. Unlike Rick Riordan, Rachel allows her fanbase to use her work as a source on Greek myth and she obfuscates the line between "fiction" and "fact". Rick Riordan started Rick Riordan Presents after he had multiple hits under his belt that were celebrated and loved. Rachel is starting Rachel Smythe Presents after a one hit wonder that could be chalked up to a total fluke that wasn't even able to go out with a bang.

Rick Riordan writes fictional stories inspired by Greek myth for children. Rachel is writing fictional stories claiming to be "retellings" of Greek myth - and now other mythologies if the implications of this project follow through - for adults. It's disingenuous and it frankly deserves to be paid attention to and called out.

I do genuinely want to see creators given an avenue to monetize their work and that's why I think the thought of it is nice, but any amount of further digging just makes this feel like a grift that will lead young and inexperienced creators down a path that won't benefit them (or take advantage of them) due to the blatant lack of care and management exhibited by Rachel over the past 5 years. Just because Rachel had one massive hit that lined her pockets for years does NOT qualify her to be a titan of the industry. Not by a long shot.

To quote Super Eyepatch Wolf,

"Let's say you decide you want to become a carpenter, and particularly, how to build a nice chair. Think about the kind of person you'd want to learn that skill from - would it be from someone who's built nice chairs every day for 30 years, or would it be the guy who built ONE nice chair 5 years ago out of a special kind of wood that doesn't exist anymore, who has NO experience with the kind of wood available to you now?"

EDIT to add: it was more likely Rachel's representative, Britt Seiss who landed this deal for her, not Penguin House themselves. That's what agents are for.

EDIT EDIT: this is ALL assuming she even FOLLOWS THROUGH with this project, because god knows the only reason LO has even gone on as long as it has was because she was being held responsible via a contract, she's NOTORIOUSLY bad for committing to things and has even admitted to it in interviews. She barely even works on LO as it is. Spring of 2024 could roll around and this project could entirely fizzle out. Again, not me trying to be a negative nancy here, I'm just stating my own concerns based on what we all know about Rachel at this point and how she operates.

SO i use such unfathomable amount of cc i never organize so finding most specifics worth sharing is too hard BUT i do always use this skin detail in my sims now. i also love their more block color cc of the same type i can only find rn on patreon (its free). i switch up which skin overlays i use but i always use these. idk if it counts as a direct sims mod but i looooove gshader. unable to play vanilla sims bc of it. i otherwise dont rlly use a lot of sims mods bc i like the rp element of making sims do normie shit but the filter helps

I am working on my first ttrpg character building right now, and I don’t think a lot of people use my method of character building? So I’m almost always very jokey when making my characters. I literally named one of my characters after Loss.jpeg, and I created them for a bit. Another character was in an RP server, who was originally a bit where I made up shit about her on the fly. I literally have a character named after Rick rolls.

So my character is a gnome with guns that dresses sort of like the sixth doctor. He believes in a religion that is literally just based on my minimal knowledge Zardoz but is also a pyramid scheme for acorns (a common resource). They believe in the water cycle in a world that has extradimensional rain.

But, the difference between me and many other people who make characters as a joke is, once I’m actually writing them, I take them 100% seriously.

Hello! Bet you forgot about me.

There MAY be a skippable half chapter coming up that doesn’t exactly add anything to the story, but I want to add it. It won’t have a big post like this.

Their first date went off without a hitch- both parties were pleased with the results they received. Kankou learned that Nik had a younger sister and brother (a lie), that he was working on another novel at the time (actually a truth), and his contact information. Nik, in turn, found out Kankou values both pure of heart people and sly manipulators in different ways (how ironic), that he dislikes people who discard their allies, that he hates religion, and that he has a sibling (his lack of detail egged on Nik’s nerves, but it was whatever…) Nik had managed to physically lower Kankou’s guard as well, brushing his hand over the smaller man’s when he tactfully spilled his coffee. It was cute watching someone normally so analytical fuss about and grab fistfuls of napkins to clean him.

That night, Kankou had called the reference number to who had asked for information on Nik. They picked up immediately.

“Hello?”

“Ah, yes. This is regarding your order to the services of the Ikebana club. I was wondering… these instructions were very lax and the target seems to have a lack of suspicion around me. Did you tell the target he was going on a blind date?” Kankou sounded completely neutral, as if he’d just turned his manners off.

“Ah yes. Well, Nik isn’t the sharpest guy all the time, you know? I figured his poor sappy heart would fawn all over you and he’d spill everything,” the man on the other end’s voice sounded euphoric almost, the tinge of sadism lilting each syllable.

“… ah, I see. I was asking because it’s a bit abnormal, but that lines up just fine. Thank you for your time. Expect the file to be complete in a month’s time,” Kankou replied almost robotically.

“Bye,” and with that, the other line dropped.

Nikolas leaned against his roommate’s bedroom door, “You did well.”

“Shut up,” Cerrel’s voice was flat and he seemed unenthusiastic, “The only reason I’m doing this is to see what money the guy has in his accounts. You remember that part of the deal, right?”

“Of course, my dear companion!” Nik smiled sweetly, “I’d never forget what mainly drives you.”

“Good. Now buzz off, I have a nap to take.”

“Of course. Rest well!”

Nik left the hall and stalked back to the living room, then over to his workspace. He immediately delved into the headspace of his criminal protagonist- a man who was a beloved TV show host by day and a serial killer making leaps and bounds around police at night. The thought thrilled him and engaged him enough, so why not synthesize his thoughts into writing? He grabbed his laptop and started where he left off- our anti-hero on call with his mom explaining why he couldn’t come home last night for family dinner…

Kankou sighed and paced within his room. The sun was down now, and the moonlight shone through the blinds. Nik seemed hesitant to open up… what was the game here? He left the large dollar coin on his bedside table heads up- a silent message to Ginko and Ran to follow him again tomorrow, on the next date. What should he do to try and open Nik up…? Was it all a matter of physicality? Normally people initiated with him, not the other way around. Maybe it’s just a matter of having fun? He would have to test around this next date.

Regardless, this wasn’t something he could figure out in a night. He sat on his bedside and contemplated the future, then laid down and rested for the night.

Kankou pushed his scarf closer to his nose as they stood on the platform of the train. Nik watched down at him and set a warm hand on the smaller man’s shoulder.

“You seem in thought, Ko,” Nik mused a bit.

“Oh, I do?” He glanced up at Nik and smiled, “Just thinking about what I want to do when I get home, whether I want to resume work on my current bouquet or just go to bed.”

“Current bouquet? You didn’t mention your work with flowers.”

“Oh, hehe, yeah. I arrange flowers and also grow them. Well, more like I have a partnership with who grows them, and they live with me anyways, so… free shipping,” Kankou smiles when Nik chuckles.

Once again, Nik’s arm relaxed and his index finger caught Kankou’s pinky. He did it well on purpose, but still played coy, “Oh! Oops, sorry.”

Nik immediately withdrew his hand, but Kankou almost impulsively reached for it again, lacing his fingers between Nik’s. Perhaps the blonde needed to work on his subtlety…

“You can hold my hand, you know. I won’t bite,” Kankou grinned up at him teasingly. Nik blushed a bit and turned away.

“Haha, right… sorry, this is still pretty new to me,” Nik analyzed the grasp Kankou had of his hand while the train arrived. Kankou glanced around the empty car once they stepped in, then sat with Nik. He’d nearly forgotten the feel of a train before tonight, since he just drove everywhere to do his work. He felt a bit of heat on the side of his head as well as gentle pressure but ignored it as it didn’t seem to be an imminent danger.

Tonight went well for Kankou, they went to a more serious dinner place and then to a small band’s concert. Nik had a smile practically the whole night, so that means it went well, right? He also learned what high school Nik had gone to and his roommate’s name when he called randomly about their cat- Cerrel, he said was his roommates name. He wondered vaguely if he’d ever have to meet him; somewhere inside his heart he was deeply and profoundly curious on the less vital parts of Nik’s life, he wondered what his apartment smelled like… Ahh, focus! He saw pictures of their cat as well, who Nik had no idea the breed of.

“Oh, what kind is she?”

“That’s not a thing with cat people, we don’t know what kind our cats are,” Nik teased.

“Then I’ll google it.”

Moments later they were shocked at just the number of breeds cats could come in, then discovered that his cat was an American Bobtail. Nik said Cerrel knew for sure and that he’d ask tonight.

Kankou became incredibly aware the warmth on the side of his head was Nik’s head resting against Kankou’s. His face grew red and he stiffened. What should he do…? Perhaps he should treat Nik as he treated his other loved ones when they slept on him? It’d been a while, though…

Kankou shifted a bit. Nik didn’t wake, he simply hummed in his sleep. Kankou whispered, “Nik… What if it misses your stop?”

His mind was racing. I mean, I have an extra bed if he needs it, but what should I do? It’s been a few dates, sure, but this means I have to cancel the order for him since this could be a trap. It should be fine… he’ll make a secondary order on Cerrel to cover his ass. It’ll be fine… there are cameras in the house anyways…

Kankou watched the world outside with tense shoulders.

✮ - if you have an(y) oc(s) what was your inspiration to make them?

The inspiration was another rp I was writing in the crm (walking dead) verse I created by myself. My OC Alexis was someone I had as an npc in that story and I fell in love with her so much that I wanted to give her an own profile. The first idea to use her face was a random gifset of Inbar Lavi I saw on my timeline and I loved her presence so much that I started watching series she was in (imposter, Lucifer) and developed her character based on the characters she played and on what I had in mind for her before in my story.

✘ - what portrayal are you really proud of?

I’m actually never proud of myself, I more or less criticize and hate everything I create or do and only accept it when people tell me it’s good, but that still doesn’t make me proud. There are just sometimes replies or memes I wrote which I reread and think the portrayal fits to how I see the character. But that’s it. I live through the feedback of my friends and partners 😅

✿ - why did you choose to make your muse?

As I said for my OC it was simply because I started to fall in love with Inbar herself and wanted to create a female OC for a long time cause I usually always wrote male canon muses. I enjoy to write a women who is completely different from myself. Rick is my favorite character of all time and helped me through so much stuff (just as Andy) and that’s why it wasn’t enough for me to just write a fanfic with him but wanted to explore his character more in different settings. He’s very similar to me so it was an easy choice cause he felt like being in my head before I even wrote him and now I can write down what I hear before it bugs me in my head too much 🤣 with negan and Tommy it was actually influenced by my friends to write them, cause some of the partners I write with since the beginning told me they would see me writing Negan well and also later Tommy (because I already noticed some similarities between him and rick and therefore started to get interested in his character and watched the series). I always was a regan (rick x negan) shipper and that’s how I started writing again as I wrote regan fanfics. This brought me back to writing and made it easy to write negan as well cause I somehow wrote him in the fics already but it wasn’t something I considered doing cause I simply thought I’m closer to rick so I better stick to him. But then my friends encouraged me and first I wrote Tommy and Negan only with the people who told me to try it and as I felt comfortable enough I made their profiles open for everyone.

So one of my favorite details of your RP 'verse is the idea of "Sonic Boom" as an in-universe TV show. So I'm curious if there are any other in-universe TV shows, movies, and/or books that have gotten any attention or that you've given any thought to? :3

AS A MATTER OF FACT, yes there are! But before I go into that, some context for those that aren’t aware of what @gojira007 is referring to:

Within the RP, the show “Sonic Boom” exists in exactly the same way it does in real life. It was made by overlanders, for overlanders, and it’s essentially a fictionalized/propagandized version of the actual events of the Sonicverse history and backstory -- and it’s outrageously offensive to basically any non-overlander. It not only trivializes the very real atrocities that Robotnik/Eggman committed, but it plays those things up for friggin’ comedy. In addition, everyone has really weird proportions because overlanders are used to long limbs and torsos, they portray Robotnik in a very generous way between his physique and cutesy/harmless behavior, and the show even low-key ships Sonic and Amy “because they’re both hedgehogs and would go better together.” The only difference between Sonic Boom within the RP and Sonic Boom IRL is that the RP version doesn’t have Sticks, because she’s not a public figure. Anyway, needless to say the show was the source of international uproar.

AND WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY, on to other in-universe media!

So let’s get the uncomfortable one out of the way: The RP had a big MLP influence for a while. REST ASSURED I’M CRINGING ALONG WITH YOU AS YOU READ THAT. Basically my RP partner was a hardcore brony at the time, so I wove some MLP elements into the game because I knew it would make him happy. Basically the idea was that Equestria was a very closed-off part of the Mobius map and very much kept to itself, until the day someone started filming a reality TV show there called Equestria Girls and chronicled the lives of the Mane 6. This was mostly played off as an easter egg for my partner, and as such Finitevus was a big fan of this show. This one has pretty much become a relic of the past, however, as we’re all well aware of how toxic and straight-up uncomfortable it eventually became to even admit to being an MLP fan, and my partner kind of operates nowadays as though his brony-ness never existed. As such, we don’t refer to this show anymore and kind of don’t acknowledge that this bit of world building ever existed.

INSTEAD, we now focus on Sticks’ favorite TV show, Forest Friends! This is an RP version of the Animal Crossing franchise. “Forest Friends” is a semi-educational cartoon that’s a huge hit at the moment. Sticks probably wouldn’t have even gotten into the show at all, except one day her Gramma Lara got her a couple of Forest Friends dolls as a get-well-soon gift when she was recovering from surgery. This led to Sticks getting into the books, which led to her getting into the show, which led to her wanting more toys, which has now led to her bugging her dads about wanting more Forest Friends stuff all the damn time. Recently she had a meltdown because there was huuuuge hype about a new Friend coming to town -- Raymond -- and she just HAD to get the new book and doll about him... but he was sold out everywhere! Lots of panic and sobbing over that one, h’oh boy.

One of my personal favorites is a book series that we’ve only referred to very lightly in passing called Jerry Potter. This amuses the shit out of us because, although we’re not imagining the character to be an overlander, we ARE both imagining the “Jerry” in question is based on Jerry from Rick & Morty. We imagine the Jerry Potter series is a story about an utterly inept loser of a wizard that’s trying to bumble his way through wizard school.

This one is VERY obscure, but another show within the game is called Fall Down Bear. This one refers to a very tiny detail in an INCREDIBLY obscure game called Illbleed. Within the game (which is super weird but oddly fascinating, do yourself a favor and check it out), there are a couple of scenes where a TV will turn on and show about 5 seconds of a show called Fall Down Bear, where a brown bear walks for a bit and then falls down. This show is actually a favorite of Knuckles, largely because slapstick humor is more or less the only humor he had for most of his life. We imagine the show is probably more skit-based and centers around Fall Down Bear trying to get through very mundane situations, but always managing to have SOME kind of mishap that results in him falling down, sometimes in elaborate Rube Goldberg types of ways.

I thiiiiink that might be all of the noteworthy ones. It’s at least all the ones that come to mind. If I think of any others, I’ll do another post sometime!

Speaking a non-lectal idiolect for fun and profit: an essay

This is an essay on what’s in it for you if you make the way you talk unique. It’s very long, because first you need to understand the social implications, which requires a lot of background knowledge. Think of this as a technical introduction to something that’s hard to do right, but written without assuming you already know anything about sociolinguistics. In my opinion, it’s worth it to know all of this, because then you can think about the way you speak on a new level, where you’re aware of what it’s doing for you socially.

What is an idiolect?

It’s the way a single person talks in a single language. Most people’s idiolects belong to a dialect or regiolect (a regional variety), a sociolect (a variety associated with a social group), and some amount of registers (varieties used in different social contexts). Some examples of dialects of English, with varying scope, include General American, North San Francisco Bay English, Older Southern American English, and Scottish English. Some examples of sociolects of English include African American English, surfer slang, the “gay lisp”, and Received Pronunciation. (All sociolects are somewhat regional in nature, too.) Some examples of registers of English are the way you’re asked to write in essays in grade school, the way you talk with your family, the way you talk with your friends, and the way you talk on the internet. (Prescribed registers like Grade-School Essay English are usually plagiarized off of old high-prestige sociolects, so they can feel sociolectal. But the way you write grade-school essays is your grade-school essay register, and that’s a register, not a sociolect.)

These categories can collectively be called “language varieties” or “lects”. The boundaries between lects are fuzzy. The way you tell whether an idiolect belongs to a lect is whether it has some features that are part of that lect: pronouncing a vowel a certain way, using certain words instead of other ones, that sort of thing. But these features never cluster together cleanly into lects where everybody has all the features of that lect. Each feature has a slightly different geographic and social distribution. Here’s a bit of Rick Aschmann’s wonderful map of American English phonological features:

This isn’t even all of them. You can see him picking out dialects, but it’s hard to do with so many intersecting features.

Regardless, you don’t have to have all features of a lect to have that lect, since no feature even “belongs” to a lect in the first place. But there are some features that aren’t even on the radars of any of these lects, and would be out of place in the idiolect of one of their speakers. For example, pronouncing “new” as “nyoo” would be weird anywhere on this map. The people who do that learned English on a different continent entirely.

If the language you’re speaking is your second language, your idiolect might be pretty unique, and contain features from your parent language, with the most apparent ones being phonological ones. There isn’t a good word for this as far as I know; I just hear it discussed as “foreign pronunciation of X” or “X as a second language”, which makes it sound like a collection of speech errors instead of an idiolect. It’s not. Your idiolect is always valid. It might cause problems, though, especially if you’re a second language speaker, when people can’t understand you. It might also cause problems if people stereotype you based on it (see below). Finally, it will cause problems if your idiolect contains slurs, and I have no sympathy for you in that case. But no matter how many problems your idiolect causes, it’s not worse than anyone else’s on some universal scale. It’s just different.

What your idiolect says about you (to laypeople)

People are better at identifying lects than they give themselves credit for. They might not be able to narrow it down to a single city and social group every time, but at the very least they can tell the country you come from, and can pick out major sociolects like African American English (AAE). They use your idiolect to infer a lot of things about you, based on how they feel about the groups that use those lects. They often go so far as to say that the language features they notice in these lects inherently produce these feelings. When people say that, they are almost always terribly wrong.

A common example of this is racism towards black people. If you speak a version of AAE, people are reminded that you come from a black community. They will then apply their assumptions about black communities to you. White people will imagine you growing up in a ghetto, and not having a good education. They imagine you dressing and acting a certain way. Their assumptions are built on the AAE speakers they’ve seen in the media, and in real life. Black people have gotten to the point in mainstream media where now there are multiple black person character archetypes. But most real people don’t fit those.

(Meanwhile, a black person who speaks a white sociolect will get called “articulate”, because people have better stereotypes about black people who speak that way.)

Another common example is the image of upper-class British people that Americans have. If you are a Received Pronunciation (RP) speaker, Americans will describe you as “posh”. They will imagine you having lots of money and strong opinions. They will, again, imagine you dressing and acting a certain way. This is again because of the contexts in which they’ve been exposed to RP in. In media, its speakers are educators, acclaimed writers, royalty, and historical figures. As an RP speaker, you might not be any of those, but you will still get the credit for it.

This effect intersects with sexism as well. Valley Girl English is a heavily-stereotyped sociolect. If you have features of Valley Girl English, people might call you “superficial”, and think that you are dumb and that you sleep with many people. They will imagine you dressing and acting a certain way. (I’m repeating myself for the third time because with all of these examples, you can probably imagine what way I’m talking about without me telling you. Everybody knows Valley Girl English speakers, for example, wear revealing clothing and have expressive body language.) They will imagine sexist things about you because the Valley Girl stereotype is in general a sexist stereotype.

One interesting example I don’t see brought up very often is features associated with bigots. One such feature is using the substantive for certain groups of people. People get offended if you say “blacks” and “Jews” instead of “black people” and “Jewish people”, because they know that that’s what bigots say. If you have this feature, people will imagine that you are dismissive towards the problems that minorities face.

What (lay)people say about your idiolect

People who think they know things about language will say that their stereotypes about your lects come directly from the language features themselves. They will say that the AAE sentence fragment “did’n do nofin” sounds “lazy” and “uneducated”, and when asked why, they will say that it’s lazy to not have a “t” in “did’n”, it’s lazy to have “f” and “n” instead of “th” and “ng” in “nofin”, and most of all, it’s bad grammar to have two negatives. They will say that Valley Girls use “like” as a filler word so much because they don’t actually have anything to say. And they will say that the reason that words like “blacks” are offensive is because it is dehumanizing to not include the word “people”.

All of these things are wrong. The truth is that these features occur more or less randomly regardless of social attitudes. Sound changes occur all the time to every language and every lect; the “posh” RP is just as much of a pile of sound changes as the “lazy” AAE. There are many languages and lects where flipping all the negatives in a sentence negates it, like in AAE, instead of just flipping one negative. My first language, Hungarian, is one of them. AAE isn’t any worse for having it. It’s just a way that it’s different from most other English lects. “Like” isn’t used more than any other filler word, and filler words are in every language. There is nothing empty-headed about using filler words. Everybody does it. Saying “<adjective>s” instead of “<adjective> people” is far more common than not, over all languages. In many languages it’s the only way to do it. Even in English, it’s the preferred way to do it for nationalities, e.g. “Americans” instead of “American people”, or things that sound like nationalities, e.g. “lesbians” instead of “lesbian women” (although you do hear the two-word forms in some narrow contexts).

The best way to figure out whether your feeling about a feature is an inherent thing about it or just a bias of yours is to ask, “Does this feature also occur somewhere where I don’t feel about it this way?” The answer is almost always yes. It’s a big world out there.

Rigging the system

Getting stereotyped isn’t fun. Nobody can opt out of stereotypes. People will take every little facet of you, from your clothes to your height to your gender to your skin color and infer a whole bunch of things about you no matter what you do. But you can stop people from including your idiolect in the information they use to construct their stereotypes. Or at least, you can discourage them. Or instead of opting out of stereotypes altogether, you can try to control them instead, and use them to express things about yourself. You can do this by being aware of which language features form which lects, and which lects invoke which stereotypes. After that it’s just a matter of adopting the language features you want, which is still easier said than done.

One way to use this power is to adopt an idiolect that runs counter to the stereotypes that people might construct about you for other reasons. You can often do this just by changing register, without retraining yourself to a different lect. For example, as a child, I got stereotyped as “smart” and “gifted”. I did not feel very smart or gifted, but I did know that I wanted to erase stereotypes. So I tried to speak very informally all the time. My hope was that my actions would speak louder than my words, and people would think I’m smart for real reasons, and feel less like the register I was using was only for dumb people. It’s hard to estimate the amount of success I had, but I never stopped wanting to speak in ways that people don’t stereotype as “technical” and “too complicated for normal folk". People still think of me as “technical”, so I guess I’m a failure.

Another way to use this power is to adopt a non-lectal idiolect. This is the main point of the post. “Non-lectal” is a term I made up to refer to something that has a collection of features that make it impossible to classify into a lect. Having a non-lectal idiolect will make it difficult, but not impossible, for people to form stereotypes about you based on your idiolect. It might also give you more freedom of self-expression, because each language feature can say something different, instead of all of them together saying that you belong to a stereotype.

Non-lectal idiolects

Having a non-lectal idiolect is harder than it sounds. You can’t just make a grocery list of language features you want, because that list is endless and you will always forget something. Maybe one day, somebody will write a complete guide to all English language features, telling you who uses them, and how people feel about that. Then, in a year or two, that guide will be useless, because attitudes towards certain language features have changed, and new, interesting language features have sprung up that should really be in your guide. But then, that’s the almanac model. If people cared about that sort of thing, you could make a lot of money re-releasing an updated version of your book every year.

A good way to make a non-lectal idiolect is slowly. Think of yourself as a language feature collector, like somewhere between a postcard collector and a Pokémon trainer. Whenever you notice a cool language feature you would like, think about what groups it would associate you with. If you’re comfortable with that, add it to your idiolect. Maybe read up on how it works, if you’re lucky enough to have literature on that. If not, do your best to figure it out on your own, or come up with your own version of it.

There’s a couple of pragmatic considerations to keep in mind:

Borrowing features from lects that are closely associated with minority groups you aren’t part of is not a good idea. People will think that you are pretending to be a member of this minority. The people who will be the most offended are the minority members themselves.

A classic case of this is that it’s not a good idea to borrow distinctive features from AAE if you are white. I have personally wanted to do so many times, as a sign of respect and as a way of normalizing a sociolect that people look down on. But I’ve ended up borrowing only innocuous things where I have the plausible deniability of having taken it from somewhere else. I feel justified in using multiple negatives, for example, because my first language also does it. But really, I do it because of AAE.

Trying to use language that people consider offensive in a way where you feel like you’re removing the offensiveness is not a good idea. You will never make anything but enemies if you try to bleach or reclaim a slur, for example, especially if you’re not part of the group that the slur applies to. You have to get an army of people to do the same thing with you before you can do that and not be taken for a bigot.

Trying to use the substantive, which, as noted above, is associated with bigotry but isn’t inherently insulting the way slurs are, is a project that maybe has more merit, but consider this. You will, eventually, use the substantive around a minority member and make them feel unsafe. This is a somewhat different dynamic than when, say, a white person feels unsafe around an AAE speaker because they associate AAE with crime. In the first scenario, the minority member is guaranteed to have already experienced bigotry, and has every right to be wary of bigots. In the second scenario, the white person is just racist, precisely because they haven’t interacted with AAE speakers enough. Is it a positive thing to give a minority member experiences where a substantive user turned out not to be a bigot? Well, sure, but in the meantime you’re making their life worse. I would err on the side of not making people’s lives worse.

Is a non-lectal idiolect right for me?

Think about what you want your idiolect to mean. It matters more what your idiolect’s features mean to you than what they mean to other people. You’re the one who has to listen to it all the time, after all.

Sometimes what a feature expresses to you can be so different from what it expresses to other people that you start to feel bad about it. And sometimes this is a feature you’ve acquired naturally, not by planning your idiolect. For example, the thing that affects the way I speak and write the most is that I have central auditory processing disorder. I absorb language and information through text far better than through speech. It about balances out; it’s like the text and speech capabilities of a neurotypical person got switched. I hardly ever remember things from lectures, but once I read something in a textbook, I’ll remember it for a long time. In my dreams, I can read text, but I can’t understand speech. And, most importantly, I naturally acquire language through text, not through speech. This means that, while most people end up writing the way they talk until they are trained to use a unique register for writing, I would end up talking the way I write if I didn’t put every ounce of my effort into not doing that.

I would love to naturally express to people through my idiolect that I have more of a connection to written things than spoken things. And in theory just letting the acquisition take its natural course would be a good way to do that. But the problem is that the most common written register of English is basically an anachronistic pastiche of formal English sociolects from the 20th century. People don’t just think that I sound like a book. People think that I sound “smart” and “educated” and “technical”. This is what I’ve wanted to avoid all of my life.

I would like to express other things than just my connection to text. There are many lovely dialects that I have respect for and a personal connection to that I would like to give a shout-out to in my idiolect. For example, in the Hungarian lect my family speaks, the word for “New York” is Nyujork instead of Nujork, because it was borrowed from British English and not American English. I think this is really cool and cute, so as a way of paying tribute to it, I pronounce words like “new” and “nude” as “nyoo” and “nyood”. I could have just changed how I pronounce “New York”, but I already have other features competing for New York-related real estate, and having the sound change be universal is easier anyway.

The biggest reason to worry about which language features to have is that you ultimately know yourself better than your language acquisition engine does. Your language acquisition engine will take features from your environment and dump them into your lap. Your job is to vet these features and see if you like what they tell people. If you just let it do its thing, your idiolect will probably tell people where you lived, and maybe what communities you’ve been part of. But probably not as well as if you’d put some thought into it.

Putting thought into your idiolect doesn’t have to mean making it non-lectal. Making it non-lectal is the nuclear option where you don’t want people to immediately associate you with certain places and cultures. If you are okay with being associated with a place and/or a culture, consider its distinctive lect something to build around. There is no hard boundary on being a non-lectal speaker. You can have a lot of features that point towards one thing and several other features that point towards other things. Experiment.

Conclusion

Language is the most versatile tool for expressing yourself. The semantics of any language are already a powerful engine of communication that you’ve been training yourself your entire life to use. Make the pragmatics, the metatext, work for you too. Don’t worry about every feature; there’s too many of them to do that. But if you single out features you care about, you can turn your idiolect into a beloved work of art that you can carry with you everywhere. Whether the art that you make will be non-lectal, I cannot say. But know that the option is there, and it’s a goldmine of untapped self-expression potential.

Lookin' for lady RPers!

Hello! I’m Rensin, and I’m lookin’ for people to RP with. You can call me Rick, Rensin—by one of my character’s names if you would rather, anything at all really! As long as it’s somewhat nice.

I live in the central timezone, but I’m around quite a bit thanks to my phone, so time doesn’t have too much of a restraint on me unless we are talking about the other side of the world here, in which case I do have to sleep sometime. However, soon… unfortunately, I’ll be looking for new employment due to company changes, so I’ll have some more spare time on my hands.

Now! To the nitty gritty. What I’m looking for. I’m looking for OC RP, though I do like RPing in established universes like Skyrim, GTA locations… anywhere at all really, and I usually like to RP completely original type of things.

I only like to do MxF with me as the male (Though I will say I’m comfortable with playing female chars in a FxF scenario), and I do prefer to RP along with women, though really your gender is no concern to me in the long run. I do however like to get friendly with the people I rp with OOC, so having a nice chat here and there and maybe getting to know my partner in crime is always fun too. If you just want straight RP and have no desire in socializing, I might not be for you!

I do have a tendency to be a bit of a flirt OOC as well—if that makes you uncomfortable it’s fine with me as we all come from different walks, but set that line for me—I’ll likely ask you right away on our boundaries to be set when we interact at first. I prefer to RP with single females (If you’re married/seeing someone that’s fine! Just if it gets awkward for me I might bow out, but I’m all ‘bout discussion! Same goes for you, I prefer someone that’s able to talk to me rather than outright ditching) as it’s more of a comfort factor for me.

What I have in mind are things like this:

Space adventure: First one would be a “Space adventure” of sorts. We go into space, we explore… we get into trouble. My char would have a ship, and we’d both work on said ship doing smuggling, mercenary runs… all those sorts of things.

Steampunk Airship: This one is one I’ve worked on for a while. Basically, my char and a lot of others have an airship that’s designed to be fast, and deliver time sensitive and important mail. This one to me is fun because it’s sort of a… well, I guess you could call it steampunk. Airships, odd steam-based technology… war, strife, intrigue. It’s basically set in a world that has been literally torn apart by war for thousands of years.

Zombie/Apocolypse/Mad Max-like/Dystopian: I lump these all together because these have always been hit or miss for me. I’ve had RP partners that would RP stuff out in these settings, then immediately leave like a day after. Not saying I’m bad at them, just saying that I don’t think it’s my best stuff—not that I don’t have fun doing them.

Modern Fantasy: This goes in the vein of WhiteWolf world of darkness stuff, or even Shadowrun. Modern setting with Werewolves, Vampires, Angels, Demons… what have you. Or elves, orcs, dwarves? I’ll do it. Sounds like fun, set me up. I can come up with some ideas.

Crime/Mercenary Group/Smugglers: I mentioned Grand Theft Auto—and this would sort of be like that. Or that crappy APB game.

So, there’s an idea I’ve been playing with for over ten years. Basically it’s a group that can be either criminals, or mercenaries… and this group wants to control a strife ridden city. Through either physical force, or money—both ways are acceptable to them. They are hard as nails type of people, that love to fight and fornicate.

Along with that of course comes territory wars, disputes with officials of said city, and lots and lots of collateral damage.

Dark Science Fiction/Cyber Punk: I love settings like the older Shadowrun, or movies like Bladerunner and The Fifth Element. Gritty scenery mixed with technology and a world rife with problems. Detectives that have seen too much shit and want to move on up in the world, even if that means getting a higher level apartment in the giant glass monolithic towers that pollute the cities.

In that sorta scenario we can collaborate and come up with something. I love playing a grizzled detective that’s had a bad past with the local police department, or some sort of bounty hunter.

Farm/Harvest Moon-like: Okay, so—I love Harvest Moon, I love Stardew Valley, and I love the Rune Factory games. I would love to RP something that’s a little slice-of-life like game where I have a char that owns a farm, and is trying to get to know people through a series of events. He could also be an aspiring dungeon delver—really the setting could go anywere. This one can be fleshed out more as we talk.

Xcom/Earth Defence/Alien Hunters: I think it’d be fun to have an RP where we have some characters (either a couple or a group) that hunt aliens to defend or even take back the Earth. A tight-knit group/couple that use high tech weapons, armor, and other means to take the fight to the nasties that threaten the world.

The group gets close, and well… if unfortunate things happen, it could be some real sad stuff to see them go defending not only their home, but the ones they love.

Slice of Life: This one is broad. Very broad. Young friends finally seeking romance between each other, or a writer gets to know his neighbor better. Usually I like these ones to be a little smut-heavy to make up for the drama, but it’s always up for discussion how we can spice it up. Story is always up for debate too.

A group goes to "Another Universe": Basically, a group of people from our very normal world go into another universe, where they find they are stronger, have special abilities, and are trying to stop that world from flowing over into ours. Can be dark, and gritty... the other space can be unforgiving and full of dangerous monsters. I kinda took inspiration for this one from anime, various movies, and various videogames.

I like the idea of a group of people hiding this while figuring out the best way to live their lives, hiding this huge secret that there's a whole other dangerous universe, and no one even knows they are saving the world by going there and stopping the evil creatures in it.

That’s all fine and nice Rensin, but tell us about you.

Okay! Great. So, I’m a 32 year old man, who is looking for someone that’s 18+ to RP with. I need to know your age, so please inform me before adding me. To me that’s just nice to know, because I intend to get into some heavy subjects.

Which brings me to this. Smut? Violence? Yes. I do both. When it comes to it, I love having these things in my RP. Story and good dialogue is a must, as well as humor—but so are adult themes like sex and horrors of life. I will likely ask you what kinks you have, and how we can incorporate them into RP. I don’t again want RP that’s centered only around sex, but I do want to discuss how it will go down when we have it go that way.

I don’t have many limits. As long as it’s not pooing or peeing it’s all kinda whatever to me. I could even say that when it comes to the idea of “Dom vs. Sub” that I’d be more inclined to play a dom. I’ve done sub and it just feels… awkward to me, mostly because I want to come out on top? No pun intended.

I’ll run down more things I want with sexuality in RP as I don’t want to turn this into something not so safe for people to view—and I’ll ask you the same!

i. selectivity / following

this is a selective, private, paragraph-based blog for bianca di angelo of rick riordan’s percy jackson series and any other works. i will not follow back everyone that follows me, mostly to keep my dash clean, and those i see possible interactions between our characters. i will not follow blogs that do not have a rules page, and i prefer you at least have a little about your muse. personals will be blocked, unless they are a main for an rp sideblog.

i am very, very picky about doubles.

ii. crossovers / aus / ocs

pjo and riodan’s other works sort of cross over into themselves, so i’m sure we could fit it if we tried! i only ask that your blogs have a rules page, or you have a little background on aus and crossovers on your blog/when you pitch them

iii. formatting / icons

i use roughly 60x60 icons, and prefer small sup text. i can drop this to just small text, should you need me to.

you do not need to match me on length, but i prefer if i write several paragraphs, you try to at least respond with two, or enough details i can build my reply off of

iv. shipping / nsfw

this blog is multiship! give me all the ships! as for nsfw content, both mun and muse are 18+, but the mood for me to write, or even enjoy sexual nsfw content is rare and fickle. should the occasion arise, i will prefer to write in posts, and will tag it as nsfw // and put it under readmores. other kinds of nsfw really depend on how strong my stomach feels any particular day

I am semi-literate to literate though with dialogue heavy spots I do tend to write a bit less so it doesn’t feel like a catch up game. I am also always up for jumping between multiple rps as I am ADHD and I get the need to mix things up. I also like Discord for its servers that give organization between out of character chats and the roleplay. I only rp on Discord as Tumblr notifications are very laggy. soldier x soldier (one from each side of a battle only survivors after a natural disaster that interrupted the battle) Some plots that I have done in the past that I have enjoyed are: Worldbuilding is so much fun and I would love to work with my partner to create something new! Magic, swords, and castles are a love of mine. I also play D&D and love medieval high fantasy settings. Rick Riordan verse (All but Trials of Apollo) Legend of Zelda (BotW and Age of Calamity) I only play ocs, but am open to writing against canon characters if that is your preference. Hello! My name's Reese, Im 20 and Ive been roleplaying for about 8 years now! I live the the central time zone, however I will rp with anyone from any time zone.
