Museum of Failure in NYC
“Museum of Failure is a collection of failed products and services from around the world. The majority of all innovation projects fail and the museum showcases these failures to provide visitors a fascinating learning experience. Innovation and progress require an acceptance of failure. The museum aims to stimulate productive discussion about failure and inspire us to take meaningful risks.”
God, I love a fun museum. There’s absolutely nothing better. I went to the Museum of Failure when it opened a few weeks ago in Brooklyn and I can’t recommend it enough. The space it’s displayed in is a bit of a failure in itself (on purpose maybe?), but once you get past that it’s a great way to spend an hour. Some highlights below!
As soon as you enter, there’s the Share Your Failure wall that visitors can contribute to. Best ones I read: not getting divorced, not kissing him, not wearing sunscreen when I was young.

Okay, Orbitz was not actually a good drink, but it completely paved the way for bubble tea to take off.

“Why take diet pills when you can enjoy AYDS?" HOW WAS THIS REAL? And how on earth was it successful for decades?? This appetite-suppressant candy was successful with the help of Hollywood celebrities and its popularity peaked in the 1970s. Obviously when the AIDS epidemic emerged in the 1980s the weight-loss product was doomed.

This is basically known as the worst video game of all time and Atari reported a $536 million loss in 1983 because of it. There’s a great documentary about it called Atari: Game Over about the urban legend that unsold copies were buried.

Is it funny that there’s a Titanic reference? Absolutely. Horrid, but funny.

Oh no, these came out in 2021. A male trio of German inventors created gloves to wear when taking out tampons so that women wouldn’t get blood on their hands and have a “discrete way to dispose of the used product.” WOW.

Firstly, I apologize for introducing this image into your subconscious. I really am. The brand Hasbro designed this unusual doll to be an alternative to the hugely popular Barbie. “In keeping with the climate of the mid-sixties, they wanted to teach little girls compassion and the realities of life for homeless people.”

There’s a whole Trump wing in the museum, which is just *chef’s kiss*.

This German product was supposed to be the solution to the problem of condoms being either too small or too big. Its instructions: “Simply insert penis into an apparatus to coat with melted latex and then wait 3 minutes for the latex to dry.” It failed because the idea of inserting one's penis into the apparatus scared men and the three-minute hardening time proved too long to wait.

Developed by Chinese company Taqu Ltd., the Shared Girlfriend service rented sex dolls for $45 a day. They were made of high-quality silicon and dolls were ordered with a smartphone app then delivered to your door. “After each rental, the dolls were disinfected, and the more heavily used and damaged parts were replaced.” ICK.  Amazingly, the service was suspended only four days after its launch due to public outrage.
There were so many other incredible pieces on display (grass skis, the hula chair, the Elon Musk wall), you really should make an afternoon of it and see for yourself. I showed a few videos of the exhibit over on my spring ‘23 highlights on Instagram, if you’re interested in seeing even more. Such a fun time. Tickets available over here.
Now I beg you, world: bring back Pepsi Blue.

BIG NEWS: Apex is now on view at the Museum! Thought to be the largest and one of the most complete Stegosaurus specimens ever found, this 150-million-year-old fossil can now be seen in the Museum’s Griffin Exploration Atrium.
Apex will be studied as part of a new research initiative by scientists in the Museum’s Division of Paleontology focused on Stegosaurus biology, including the unique ornithischian dinosaur’s growth and life history. This work will require taking a small sample from a thigh bone of the specimen, which will become part of the Museum’s permanent scientific collection. All resulting 3D digital models, including the internal structures of its skull from new CT scans taken at the Museum, will be made available as a scientific resource for the wider community of researchers.

Abandoned City Hall Station
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
I have waited for this day my whole New York life.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Postcard of City Hall Station in 1913
I finally got to go on a tour of the old, abandoned City Hall Station beneath NYC. Everyone has heard about it. The only glimpse you can get of it is when you stay on the downtown 6 train and look out the window as it loops around to become an uptown train.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
The station opened in 1904 and it’s located right underneath City Hall Park and from certain areas in the park (that are now blocked off to the public), you can look down and see through the tops of the skylights in the station.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
It closed in 1945 due to the increased subway ridership that led to longer trains, and thus longer platforms. The City Hall station (built on a tight curve) would have been difficult to lengthen, and it was also fairly close to the far busier Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station so the closure made sense at the time.
SIDE NOTE: I feel like I’m slowly realizing this in real time, but like… am I… into… history? When the hell did that happen?
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
The station was designed by Rafael Guastavino and is so unexpectedly refined for a subway station with its Romanesque Revival architectural style. (Yes I looked up what the name of the style is.)

Tours are arranged through the New York Transit Museum (you have to become a member for access to ticket sales), but it’s very much worth the price. Tickets go on sale usually twice a year for different blocks of time and absolutely always sell out.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
This is, by far, one of the coolest things that you can see in New York. Equally as incredible as it was to walk around inside the crown of The Statue of Liberty.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
It really did feel like walking into a time machine that shows you what old New York City would’ve felt like. Just an incredible experience.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
I know that I only bought my New York Transit Museum membership solely for this tour, but of all the clubs to become a member to - this one really feels like a good fit for me. So excited to hear about what other tours will be offered throughout the year.

the parallel between Lestat marking all the tenor's flat notes and Armand writing all his aggressive director notes for Claudia on the 500th performance... the performing community of Paris better thank their lucky stars everyday that lesmand didn't become a real couple because there would be no survivors

If you’ve visited the Museum, you’re certainly familiar with today’s Fossil Friday feature: the Barosaurus and Allosaurus in the Rotunda! Rising 50 ft (15 m) above the ground, it’s the world’s tallest freestanding dinosaur mount. In this scene, a Barosaurus rears up to defend her young from an Allosaurus. How does the huge skeleton of Barosaurus—whose name means “heavy reptile”—stay up? The Barosaurus is built from casts of real fossil bones, while the originals are housed in the Museum’s collections. Real fossil bones would be too heavy to support this way.

I like how Ojiro Sato and Shishido and some other characters are also in the USA team but almost all of the scenes in New York only showed these two

I feel like Crosshair’s (the rest of the batch’s too tbh) reaction to the people of Pabu would be like my reaction when I moved from the city I spent most of my life in to the one I went to college in. My home city has a (very well-deserved) reputation for being full of rude people (amongst other things) so I was used to that and didn’t think anything of it. However, when I moved to a different city for college and was at the supermarket someone in line with me started chatting with me and complimenting my outfit, and I was trying to act normal because internally I was freaking tf out I was like “who is this person and what do they want from me? Oh my goodness what if this is like the intro of a true crime show?” So then after I pay I RUSH to my dad and am looking over my shoulder like “we need to leave and be careful that person was very suspicious and asking how my day was and complimenting my outfit.” And my dad was like “umm…people are just friendly here? We’re not in X anymore.” It took a while for me to get used to it and I still haven’t fully.
But yeah I feel like that’s what Crosshair’s first reaction to Pabu would be.

decided to give myself a little flash-fic challenge on valentines day ignore that it's five days later to bang out something quick and self-contained that lands at exactly 500 words. no title yet but have it anyway 😘
"So what're you doin’ after?" Curt says, out of nowhere, after a pull off the whiskey they've been passing back and forth since they clambered up Wild Cargo’s wing. “When we win,” he adds.
Bucky rolls his head enough to look at him. Curt's got his knees dragged up, fingers loose ‘round the neck of the bottle dangling between them. He doesn't look Bucky's way, squints up at the stars.
Bad luck, talking about an after. But Bucky shrugs, shoulders dragging against the wing. "Stay in. Try and make colonel, maybe." Not like he has other prospects waiting for him back home, with a half-finished degree and the reputation he left behind.
Curt huffs a breath, almost a laugh. “If anyone’s gonna, s’you,” he says, and he doesn’t sound sarcastic, which smooths down Bucky’s almost-ruffled feathers. “Where, though? Wisconsin?” He glances Bucky’s way, so quick Bucky wouldn’t see it if he wasn’t already looking, then back up at the stars. “Out west somewhere?”
Bucky can’t help but suck his teeth, follows Curt and looks back up. Christ, both options sound like hell. Watch Buck leave for Wyoming, to go off and have his perfect little life with his perfect little wife. Scrape together a life of his own in goddamn Manitowoc, flinching every time his mother's gaze skips over him, always disappointed.
"You thought about New York?" Curt says, throwing the brakes hard on Bucky’s brewing pity party. "Ain't for everyone, maybe you'll hate it, but..."
He trails off with a shrug. Still isn't looking Bucky's way, but Bucky doesn't need to see his face to know that Curt loves his town. That he doesn't say shit like this to just anyone.
Bucky's not exactly expecting to hate it, not when the pictures Runyon paints in his books makes Bucky's imagination run wild, not when the music off Broadway has him at the mic nightly, whether anyone in the room likes it or not. And not with the way Manitowoc always feels too tight, too close, too set in stone.
Not if he’s got someone there, either.
"Yeah," he says, sudden, when he realizes he's left Curt hanging. "I oughta at least see my sisters," he says, and tips his head to meet Curt’s look, more surprised than Bucky’s expecting, "let 'em know I made it out in one piece. But I—yeah. I could do New York."
Curt bites at his cheek, but the pleased look sneaks in under the surprise anyhow. “More fun than Wisconsin, that's for sure,” he says around the grin threatening to break through, and Bucky flings an arm out to swat his hip. Leaves it there when it lands.
“Ain't much less fun than Wisconsin,” he mutters, and can't help but grin himself when Curt barks a laugh. “You better be plannin’ on taking me to Yankee Stadium, Biddick.”
“Hell of a hike from Brooklyn,” Curt laughs, dropping a hand to curl his fingers round Bucky’s wrist. Squeezes once. “But I could be convinced, sure.”
