Museum of Failure in NYC
“Museum of Failure is a collection of failed products and services from around the world. The majority of all innovation projects fail and the museum showcases these failures to provide visitors a fascinating learning experience. Innovation and progress require an acceptance of failure. The museum aims to stimulate productive discussion about failure and inspire us to take meaningful risks.”
God, I love a fun museum. There’s absolutely nothing better. I went to the Museum of Failure when it opened a few weeks ago in Brooklyn and I can’t recommend it enough. The space it’s displayed in is a bit of a failure in itself (on purpose maybe?), but once you get past that it’s a great way to spend an hour. Some highlights below!
As soon as you enter, there’s the Share Your Failure wall that visitors can contribute to. Best ones I read: not getting divorced, not kissing him, not wearing sunscreen when I was young.
Above Photo: Share Your Failure wall at the Museum of Failure, NYC
Above Photo: If this doesn’t remind you of the Toronto Science Center in the mid 90s, I don’t know what to tell you
Okay, Orbitz was not actually a good drink, but it completely paved the way for bubble tea to take off.
Above Photo: Diet candy AYDS, 1937-1980s
“Why take diet pills when you can enjoy AYDS?" HOW WAS THIS REAL? And how on earth was it successful for decades?? This appetite-suppressant candy was successful with the help of Hollywood celebrities and its popularity peaked in the 1970s. Obviously when the AIDS epidemic emerged in the 1980s the weight-loss product was doomed.
Above Photo: Atari ET Game & Console, 1982-1983
This is basically known as the worst video game of all time and Atari reported a $536 million loss in 1983 because of it. There’s a great documentary about it called Atari: Game Over about the urban legend that unsold copies were buried.
Above Photo: Low blow, museum. Low blow.
Is it funny that there’s a Titanic reference? Absolutely. Horrid, but funny.
Above Photo: Pinky Gloves, 2021
Oh no, these came out in 2021. A male trio of German inventors created gloves to wear when taking out tampons so that women wouldn’t get blood on their hands and have a “discrete way to dispose of the used product.” WOW.
Above Photo: Little Miss No Name, 1965
Firstly, I apologize for introducing this image into your subconscious. I really am. The brand Hasbro designed this unusual doll to be an alternative to the hugely popular Barbie. “In keeping with the climate of the mid-sixties, they wanted to teach little girls compassion and the realities of life for homeless people.”
Above Photo: Trump SECTION at the Museum of Failure, NYC
There’s a whole Trump wing in the museum, which is just *chef’s kiss*.
Above Photo: Spray On Condom, 2006-2008
This German product was supposed to be the solution to the problem of condoms being either too small or too big. Its instructions: “Simply insert penis into an apparatus to coat with melted latex and then wait 3 minutes for the latex to dry.” It failed because the idea of inserting one's penis into the apparatus scared men and the three-minute hardening time proved too long to wait.
Above Photo: Shared Girlfriend, 2017
Developed by Chinese company Taqu Ltd., the Shared Girlfriend service rented sex dolls for $45 a day. They were made of high-quality silicon and dolls were ordered with a smartphone app then delivered to your door. “After each rental, the dolls were disinfected, and the more heavily used and damaged parts were replaced.” ICK. Amazingly, the service was suspended only four days after its launch due to public outrage.
There were so many other incredible pieces on display (grass skis, the hula chair, the Elon Musk wall), you really should make an afternoon of it and see for yourself. I showed a few videos of the exhibit over on my spring ‘23 highlights on Instagram, if you’re interested in seeing even more. Such a fun time. Tickets available over here.
Now I beg you, world: bring back Pepsi Blue.

If you’ve visited the Museum, you’re certainly familiar with today’s Fossil Friday feature: the Barosaurus and Allosaurus in the Rotunda! Rising 50 ft (15 m) above the ground, it’s the world’s tallest freestanding dinosaur mount. In this scene, a Barosaurus rears up to defend her young from an Allosaurus. How does the huge skeleton of Barosaurus—whose name means “heavy reptile”—stay up? The Barosaurus is built from casts of real fossil bones, while the originals are housed in the Museum’s collections. Real fossil bones would be too heavy to support this way.

i like this substack article I found while googling jamie loftus’s book on hotdogs. it’s like a poem on the subject of “you can do whatever you want forever” to me
#this is how I felt when I planned my first vacation without my parents and when I moved to nyc and every time I take a train on my lunch#break and when I wear something I sewed#etc. it feels like there’s a lot of things im getting away with and its a fun little reminder that sometimes you can just do things#my posts#unrelatedly obsession with Jamie loftus continues. jamie are you (six feet tall) free on Thursday when I am free

winter assassin outfit
#zeno's art#ocs#reassassination#octavia krankenstein#oh i got a LOT to say about this one#in the comic octavia starts wearing this outfit after a certain event i think n its very symbolic#it represents mainly how her personality has changed as well as her relationship with kranken and humanity as a whole#lets do it top to bottom. FIRSTLY the mask that replaces her goggles that she wore in the “summer” outfit#the mask represents several things. firstly that octavia's relationship with kranken improved#i think the mask itself is probably kranken's and octavia uses it. showing that they've become closer#and ALSO even using a mask to hide her identity while working is in line with kranken's ideas of clothing being practical rather than flashy#(see her first outfit was originally really frumpy and practical before she DIY'd it into the minidress type thing)#anyway. the hoodie is supposed to harken more to an executioner showing octavia is more used to her job#the hoodie has eyelets which are circles. the fact that there are way more circles in the design shows that she becomes less cold#and more assimilated into human society#the gloves however are a sign of her persistent rebellion as they're fingerless and impractical lol#the pants are based off of tripp nyc's design. which was popular with mallgoths in the 90s/00s#it shows octavia's own personality and interests and of course has two hidden sets of 6's through the eyelets#lastly her shoes resemble skulls. that one's just for fun#while her first outfit completely represented rebellion i like to think this one bridges the gap between rebellion and octavia settling down#and becoming more familiar with those around her#this is only the first pass so i'll prob incorporate more red into the outfit before it's finalised#octavia isn't the only one who changes either! i want like ~3 changes for almost everyone

the parallel between Lestat marking all the tenor's flat notes and Armand writing all his aggressive director notes for Claudia on the 500th performance... the performing community of Paris better thank their lucky stars everyday that lesmand didn't become a real couple because there would be no survivors
#they would have all killed themselves within a month..fucking in the box is honestly the kindest thing those bitches could do#modern/human au lesmand run the local youth theatre like the fucking navy#but whenever the moms are around they turn up the cute sassy gay couple charm#so no one even cares/notices that they are giving children permanent psyche issues#on another level though it would probably never work bc Lestat's basic ass would just want to do Shakespeare and classic musicals#while Armand would try to put on NYC black box plays about geopolitical conflicts#iwtv#m.text

Abandoned City Hall Station
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
I have waited for this day my whole New York life.
Above Photo: Postcard of City Hall Station in 1913
I finally got to go on a tour of the old, abandoned City Hall Station beneath NYC. Everyone has heard about it. The only glimpse you can get of it is when you stay on the downtown 6 train and look out the window as it loops around to become an uptown train.
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
The station opened in 1904 and it’s located right underneath City Hall Park and from certain areas in the park (that are now blocked off to the public), you can look down and see through the tops of the skylights in the station.
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
It closed in 1945 due to the increased subway ridership that led to longer trains, and thus longer platforms. The City Hall station (built on a tight curve) would have been difficult to lengthen, and it was also fairly close to the far busier Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station so the closure made sense at the time.
SIDE NOTE: I feel like I’m slowly realizing this in real time, but like… am I… into… history? When the hell did that happen?
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
The station was designed by Rafael Guastavino and is so unexpectedly refined for a subway station with its Romanesque Revival architectural style. (Yes I looked up what the name of the style is.)
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
Tours are arranged through the New York Transit Museum (you have to become a member for access to ticket sales), but it’s very much worth the price. Tickets go on sale usually twice a year for different blocks of time and absolutely always sell out.
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
This is, by far, one of the coolest things that you can see in New York. Equally as incredible as it was to walk around inside the crown of The Statue of Liberty.
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
It really did feel like walking into a time machine that shows you what old New York City would’ve felt like. Just an incredible experience.
Above Photo: City Hall Station, April 2023
I know that I only bought my New York Transit Museum membership solely for this tour, but of all the clubs to become a member to - this one really feels like a good fit for me. So excited to hear about what other tours will be offered throughout the year.

I feel like Crosshair’s (the rest of the batch’s too tbh) reaction to the people of Pabu would be like my reaction when I moved from the city I spent most of my life in to the one I went to college in. My home city has a (very well-deserved) reputation for being full of rude people (amongst other things) so I was used to that and didn’t think anything of it. However, when I moved to a different city for college and was at the supermarket someone in line with me started chatting with me and complimenting my outfit, and I was trying to act normal because internally I was freaking tf out I was like “who is this person and what do they want from me? Oh my goodness what if this is like the intro of a true crime show?” So then after I pay I RUSH to my dad and am looking over my shoulder like “we need to leave and be careful that person was very suspicious and asking how my day was and complimenting my outfit.” And my dad was like “umm…people are just friendly here? We’re not in X anymore.” It took a while for me to get used to it and I still haven’t fully.
But yeah I feel like that’s what Crosshair’s first reaction to Pabu would be.
#I want to write this#I have so many Pabu things in my drafts but they’re all like half-baked#also I need to lock in on the PhD applications while also focusing on my Arabic classes so I can’t be writing too much rn#but oddly enough writing fanfic helps get the academic writing juices flowing as well so there’s also a strategy#also no my home city is not NYC#plus NYC gets a bad rap people there are so friendly they’re just direct and no frills about it#like where else do you see some guy see a mother struggle to carry a stroller down the stairs and just carry the stroller for her#and then just go about his day like nothing happened#star wars tbb#star wars the bad batch#the bad batch#tbb crosshair#tbb pabu#pabu

Combining the three most straightforward posts on this, and my own reminder:
Project 2025 doesn't talk about arresting protestors via cops. It talks about "putting them down" using the military on US citizens. Which means "accidental" deaths from tear gas and rubber bullets won't be the exception, a bullet in the head will be the *plan.* If your kid or grandpa was there too bad; they had terrorist sympathies and were probably under the influence of Satan according to these MAGA Christo-Nationalists.
Both sides are not the same and FDR's corpse would be a better president than Trump.
#pinned post#past pins are under that tag too#also I say this with my whole chest knowing that my family#had some kinda weird grudge against FDR and his wife#several generations long#after some slight at some book publishing party#in NYC in the 1920's#I do not give a flying fuck#I will fistfight my own ancestors over this#and the Scottish ones would probably help me#because if there's one thing that side of my fam hated#it was authoritarianism

AP News: How have your Jewish roots influenced your role in this show, which is set in Nazi Germany? Bebe Neuwirth: I am very grateful to be an artist right now. And I’m very grateful to be a Jewish artist who is helping to tell this story of “Cabaret.” I feel the responsibility. I am a German Jew. I’m also a Russian Jew. I’m a Ukrainian Jew. I feel great responsibility. I’m honored to have that responsibility. A significant part of me is deeply conscious of that every time I step on the stage.
source
I have a lot I can put in the tags as commentary here, but I actually think there are some things going on in this exchange that I don't want people to miss.
First of all, Cabaret does NOT take place in Nazi Germany. It takes place in Weimar Germany. The engine that drives Cabaret is that fascism is coming, the warning signs are everywhere, the darkness is encroaching... but it is not here yet.
Also, look at how the question addresses Bebe's Jewishness vs. how Bebe herself talks about her Jewishness. The interviewer asks about her "Jewish roots", suggesting that her Jewishness could be something just in her past. Bebe responds to that by affirming her identity in the present: she is a Jewish artist, a German Jew, a Russian Jew, a Ukrainian Jew. Like, if you didn't know she's a Jew, you certainly know by the end of that paragraph!
All three of these places have long histories of expelling and murdering their Jews, and not just during the Holocaust. She is here because her family, like the families of many Jews in New York and the surrounding areas (including mine!), survived that and got to safety. It is now her job to get on stage every night to tell a story about how a society allows for that expulsion and murder.
She calls it a great responsibility, and she feels honored to have it.
I don't want to fault the interviewer for phrasing it like this. It could be a way of testing the waters if you're unsure of someone's relationship to their heritage. I just find the ownership in Bebe's answers, particularly at this moment in time and in the context of this show, very moving. Yes. I am a Jewish artist. I am a Jew. Here is my history.
Anyway here's a cute video where Bebe talks about being Jewish and her relationship to being Jewish.
youtube
#bebe neuwirth#cabaret#jumblr#cabaret nyc#you're the ASSOCIATED PRESS how do you fuck up THE SETTING OF CABARET#the overwhelming vibe of the video is 'I'm not sure how to articulate this but you are Jewish so you get it'#it's tribal but in the best way#Jewish things#anyway that history very much does come through in her Schneider#you just marvel at how this tiny woman can summon so much rage#and then you watch her retreat into smallness as she surrenders to her fear of the Nazis#'I regret everything'#anyway watch me go see Cabaret again lmao#Youtube
