im re reasing all te h pjo books hoo and toa too im in teh middle of the lost hero and i read these books years ago ok i forgot half the things i didnt know quintus was daedulas or that they met haphaestus in teh book or that tyson and grover went on their own little quest together adn its slowly coming back and i just rmemebered. zeus had two kids with teh same woman in his greek and roman forms. i. i also haven't read son of neptune when i was reading the series for teh first time i decided to skip it because tower of nero was supposed to come out pretty soon and i had to coemplere hoo + toa in time to get to read tower of nero as it was released and i ended up finishing 3 hoo books and 4 toa ones before the release date anyway. in like. a month i inhaled those books and i am now i had gforgotten how much i liked them yes i'll admit it isnt the best tsorytelling but it gives me nostaligia the goo dkind and im just so. overwhelmed i lvoe these books if not for the storytelling for being the only thign getting me through being 11-14 i rememnr i used to curl up adn read them all day and then i wen tot pinrteret adn thus wwent on to become a pinterest tumblrina and then acn actual tumblrina wow

Thg non-canon things that are claimed as canon?

Oh man this will probably start some fights lol, but just to be clear I'm not saying that all of these can't be true or people are wrong for believing they are. It's more just that we don't know for sure because they're never confirmed in the source text and therefore (IMO) cannot be labeled as canon. Here are some common ones off the top of my head:

Finnick was the youngest victor ever

Rue's death sparked the rebellion

Everything Katniss did was for Prim (it all started with her protecting Prim, yes, but Prim stopped being her sole motivation after she stepped into the arena)

The Quell was rigged for Finnick to win

Peeta refused to kill (he literally said he would so idk where people got this from)

Katniss was indigenous or Katniss was white (these are the two most common ones I see people claim as canon, but her race was never stated)

Peeta's family didn't care about him or he didn't care about them

Katniss always assumed she'd marry Gale (she said that other people probably assumed it, not that she did)

Career academies

Foxface killed herself

Katniss was the first ever volunteer in district 12

Annie wasn't a Career (there isn't a single reason to believe this)

Peeta was still hijacked after the war

Katniss never experienced desire or wanted to kiss anyone (saw a fan art about this and I was just like, did we read the same books?)

Peeta wasn't a good tribute (boggles my mind that this is a popular take)

Katniss's mom didn't love her, didn't try to reach out to her after the war, and all the other stuff people make up about her to demonize her further

Disclaimer: canon can be murky when there are both books and films. The THG movies repeatedly contradict the books and some characters are completely different than their book counterparts, so it's really not possible for both canons to exist simultaneously in one universe. That's why I view the source material as the ultimate determinant of canon.

Of course, there are some movie-only details that could be true in the books as well, like Finnick being the youngest victor. My issue is more with people claiming that movie details refuted in the books are canon, or combining movie-only canon with book-only canon, or simply picking and choosing what is and isn't canon based on their preferences. I see people do this disingenuously to push certain narratives, like "the weird thing my favorite character did in the movie isn't canon but the bad thing my least favorite character did is".

All of that brings so much inconsistency and bias into the story that it starts to lose meaning and purpose, so I think it makes the most sense to only consider the books "true" canon when viewing the story as a whole.

None of this is to say people can't have headcanons or things they prefer over book canon or anything like that. The fun part of fandom is being able to engage with the material in a way that means something to you personally. So please don't take anything I'm saying as an attack on your opinions because that's not my intention.

I just want to say a *huge* thank you to the Squid Game fandom. I'm genuinely blown away.

I first started writing fanfic in 2003, but didn't *really* get into it until about 2012/2013 when I got into the Hunger Games fandom.

My most popular fic, published in June 2014, has 195 kudos, that I've been building up over the past 10 years (and - thg fandom - I'm assuming someone shared it maybe a couple of months ago, as I had a sudden load of interest out of nowhere, so thank you whoever that was)

Anyway, I published my first Squid Game fic about 40 hours ago. It's already surpassed my previous most popular. I'm genuinely not used to people actually reading my stuff at all (I have several TWD fics with only around 50 views lol) so I'm just so incredibly grateful to you all 🥹💖

Anyway, I finished my second ever drawing using Krita (still figuring it out, still have no idea what 90% of the functions do, still think hand drawing is waaaaaay easier) and I've uploaded it as a second chapter to the story right here

Tumblr was my first experience with social media, and I’ll always appreciate how kindly I was welcomed. I feel like the THG fandom often forgets that these characters are literally children, especially when it comes to Gale and Peeta (like, yes they are metaphors but they are also characters).

With Gale, people are way too hard on him given that he's navigating his very first serious romantic feelings (that are unfortunately for his best friend since he was 13). And of course, how his anti-Capitol sentiments and general fight (in fight-flight-freeze) disposition developed from having to take on the role of parent to his siblings (and help out his pregnant mother) when he was 13 without ever getting a chance to process his grief for his father's death because his fight to help his family (and Katniss') survive is literally neverending (all while knowing that he too would one day have to work in the same mines that took his father's life).

In the reverse, I feel like the fandom treats Peeta like he's just this perfect angel without considering the fact that he's literally, concurrently, a child abuse victim. That's a lot of why Peeta is so "well behaved" and selfless, and why he reacts so strongly to his attachment to Katniss. And his charm is very likely a tool he's cultivated to help him navigate his dangerous family life.

I've just been reading THG fanfiction for like, 3 months straight at least (this is how I've spent an embarrassing amount of my spare time, legitimately), and this is an observation.

Oc's in canon settings that don't make sense. I remember back when I was in thg fandom people tripped over themselves to make sure their oc matched lore. People researched named winners of what games and they like actually gave a damn about making their oc as canon as possible. Without being needlessly rude that is not a thing anymore :)

i love the concept of second chances and do-overs! it's just fun to see how things change when someone is no longer the person they were before - the time they've lived beyond the point they've travelled back to has given them new experiences and different perspective on life, so doing things 'the same as before' is no longer an option.

it opens a ton of what-if scenarios: what would they do differently if they could change how their future turns out? how do they cope with the people around them not being the people they know? especially if they've travelled back to a time before they were born - it puts them in a situation where they technically don't exist yet, so any change is huge change (e.g. thg characters in tbosas times)

(i will manifest sejanus & katniss and/or prim being friends, especially if i have to toss them into tbosas times for it to happen)

i was inspired by other fics that i had read - the very first fic i had read was a time travel oneshot (future loki dropping in on avengers 1) and that author had other time travel fics that got me into fanfiction in general. i didn't write time travel at the start, but i was reading a bunch of mcu time travel fics, and thinking about that trope carried over when i moved onto other fandoms.

also, most of the characters i get attached to end up dying (*cough cough* sejanus plinth, polities from epic the musical, severus snape, mcu loki, the list goes on) and like,, what if dying wasn't the end of their story? what if they got to do it again and do it better?

there's a lot of different ways it could go! maybe the time traveller seizes the second chance and tries to chance the future for the better (the hopeful path). or maybe they didn't want to go back - maybe the future was one they were happy with and are furious with that life being taken away, or maybe they didn't like the future but at least it meant the horrors of their past was over. they don't want to live through what they did again, even if it means a brighter tomorrow (the angsty path).

maybe the time traveller uses that opportunity live life the way they wanted to, without caring about what others think of them (lots of crack potential for this one!). maybe they decide to live their second chance selfishly, maybe they've decided they've suffered enough to deserve it. maybe they try to enjoy living in a time before [tragic incident], or maybe the tragedy is that the people in the past are not the people they know and love (very bittersweet). maybe they save the people who died the first time around, but the people they saved aren't the same as the people they knew.

maybe they fix things. maybe they make things worse. maybe they don't care to change things. maybe they care too much. but regardless of what they think or what they do, their very presence will create change whether they want it or not, and exploring those possibilities is something my brain has latched onto.

also! how do people around the time traveller react? they don't know about the time travel, but they likely will notice that a sudden shift in personality that seemingly happened overnight with no clear explanation. how do their lives change? they don't know how their life was in the future-past, so they're living through the effects of the time traveller's actions without quite knowing that there had ever been a different path for them.

i have a collection on ao3 of all my time travel fics [link: time travel my beloved <3] but my favorites out of the tbosas time travel fics i've written is either for you, at last to comprehend (marcus time travel) or echoes of shadows (sejanus time travel).

(note about echoes of shadows - i wrote that a few days after watching the film and hadn't yet finished the book, so there are details in there that are wrong)

I have been marinating on something for the last day.

For roughly ten years I have been sharing my analysis of different aspects of THG books, but I started writing in depth character analysis before I ever joined the fandom. By nature of analysis they are subjective to comprehension, education, and personal experiences, however, I do my absolute best to keep them as unbiased as possible.

I understand that what I offer may not be what you've interpreted, and that's fine. We can discuss where we're each coming from, and agree to disagree if we don't come to an understanding. There are some things that I've shifted on over the years as I learn more about classic literature and symbolism, and even people pointing out text in a way that I never noticed. My mind continually seems to be blown by these books.

What's completely uncool is to not only tell me that my analysis is wrong, but that Susanne Collins wouldn't want me to interpret what I did, they way I did.

Motherfucking what now?? The two of you bffs? You discuss this over brunch??

So what's my beef? It stems from the kerfuffle from a few days ago where there was a bit of arguing over Katniss and whether she felt sexually aroused when Gale kissed her in 2. I did't know this was hotly debated issue till after. The person was complaining about Gale and so I offered some insight by linking my Gale analysis, (which I've already decided needs to be rewritten because there's things I'd like to add or provide further clarification on).

My analysis is metaphorical, specifically comparing THG to Dante's Comedies and how the series is Katniss's own journey through the seven hells to paradise through spiritual transformation.

They said they agreed with everything except Gale having sexual feelings for Katniss (weird take, but okay). I went on to explain that Gale represents the most base of men, and that that he's meant to provide contrast to the feelings she has for Peeta, which elevate above sexual desire to a more spiritual level. Specifically, the cave kiss, when Katniss first realizes that she does not want to lose the boy with the bread, mirrors the kiss in 2 with Gale, in which she realizes Peeta will never come back or she’ll never return and she’ll go to the Capitol to die, and he’ll die hating her… all while Gale is actively kissing her neck. And because nothing matters anymore she kisses him back:

“Gale’s touch and taste and heat remind me that at least my body’s still alive, and for the moment it’s a welcome feeling. I empty my mind and let the sensations run through my flesh, happy to lose myself.”

They then tell me that Katniss only feels arousal 2-3 times in the book (whereas I believe it's more, but they're feelings that aren't worth mentioning because those feelings aren't important, but there's hints in the narrative of her desire for Peeta, often in bed) and that what she felt while Gale was touching her wasn't arousal. I say let's agree to disagree, and then they @ me TWO more times to continue to tell me I'm wrong and the bit about SC. So they're blocked, which I have never done before, beside porn bots.

PSA for the folks that don't know this because they haven't experienced these yet:

There's a difference between sexual arousal from physical stimulation, being sexually attracted to a person, and being with someone you're in love with.

You can, in fact, be aroused by someone you're not at all attracted to, it's a physical response to stimuli. Even rape victims have felt sexual arousal, which is totally normal, though generally leaves them with a sense of shame and horror. So yes, Katniss was aroused, but not actually attracted to Gale. Again, this provides contrast to what she feels with Peeta!

"I kissed Peeta about a thousand times during those Games and after. But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down. This time, there is nothing but us to interrupt us. And after a few attempts, Peeta gives up on talking. The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being."

When she's referring to how she feels with Gale it's described physically and she uses the word "flesh". What she feels with Peeta is far far more than sexual arousal. She's not saying she's horny. Katniss feels this in her soul: "to the tips of my being".

You don't have to agree with me, but if you're going to come at me with half baked theories at least back it up with textual evidence, and not like throw some bullshit at me. Stop projecting your own shit on these characters and then calling it #cannon!!

I’m almost done with Powerless (only the first book) but I’m kind of impressed with this series so far. I’m shocked I don’t see much content about it? This must be a fairly small fandom unless I’m in the wrong corners of the internet.

Like it’s not the most revolutionary thing I’ve ever read. It reads like any young adult series I’ve read in the past.

BUT it’s been a grand time. It has everything. Romance, fantasy, violence, enemies to lovers, everything.

The banter between Kai & Paedyn is entertaining as hell, the story is good enough to keep you interested, and it’s generally got good world building, nuanced characters, etc etc. It’s a creative and fun book so far.

It’s been a decent palate cleanser after binging Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and the whole ACOTAR series within a month. 

The only thing that threw me off at first was the concept of the trials and the contestants living in luxury prior to battling to the death kinda just felt like a fantasy version of the hunger games and even with that in consideration I don’t feel like I’m reading a rip off of THG series or anything so where’s the love for this series and who do I need to follow to get some good Powerless content in my feed
