Speaking of editing old fics... I have a fic that I was working with arollercoasterthatonlygoesup around 8ish years ago.
An everlark AU following the story of Eros and Psyche. We wrote the first chapter and posted it, and then I had an ectopic pregnancy and bought a house and got pregnant again and generally became too busy to write. We lost touch, they abandoned the project, and last year I deleted the fic from my AO3 account.
But.
I still have it in my google.docs. If there's interest in this I'll revive the fic and finish it.
What say you? Fair warning, if I write it there WILL be smut.

So I think I had this story, can’t remember the name of course, bookmarked on ao3 and it’s been removed, but also not knowing for sure is kind of driving me crazy.
So the story is a modern au where Katniss and Prim live with their single dad and have just moved. Prim has mental health issues and Katniss starts work at a library, owned or run by Haymitch, and some of the other characters work there too. Peeta lives next door. They sit out on a blanket on the front lawn and watch the stars. Then they’re at a playground playing together and there’s a beautiful sunset and Katniss invites Peeta back to her room to have sex, which they have.
It wasn’t finished the last time I checked, but maybe it was pulled to be changed into an original story? Ring any bells?
Hi, @wistfulweaverwoman! That sounds a lot like Amidst by amelia_day, which has been deleted by the author.

I’m afraid it’s out of my hands with The Shape of Us. Apologies. He doesn’t like it all though, except the part where he gets to spend time with Katniss.
But that’s an AU. I feel like he wouldn’t want to learn post Mockingjay. I mean there’s no point to it by then, if it’s just for hunting game.
You know what? I have to say something. There’s a lot of fics that have Katniss and Peeta in the woods, with Katniss teaching him how to do survival stuff and he gets good at it or whatever. And sure, cute, they want to share each others interests, but I cannot keep doing this 😩 some of these fics do this well and cute-ly (not a word I know) but some of them are riding that line of “make the boy less soft.” I cannot tolerate this! Give me a fic where Katniss tries to teach Peeta how to fish and (though he’s polite about it) he’s bored! He doesn’t get it! Give me a fic where she’s like “This is how you skin a rabbit,” and he’s like “Uhh, 😧” Make em laugh about it! “How about you stay my huntress and I stay your safe, well kept, personal baker?” (Wink wink). Please, I’m begging!
#wistfulweaverwoman#I can see both sides of this#it has to make sense if you’re going to go there#mostly when he’s goes into the woods with her in my fics he’s sketching#or they’re swimming

This week I wrote 2148 for a future important chapter for The Apothecary’s Daughter and then around 1700 for chapter 6 (so that’s at a 3100 word count so far so almost half written).
It was a busy week, my daughter had an audition for a musical at a large production company and we had to travel for her competitive dance team (they did very well placed platinum in all their routines).
I’m already planning to keep writing today so I can post my new chapter in the next few days.
Week 10 of 2024
Didn't do that well that great this week
For An Everlarked Ever After I wrote : 1,255
For Bitter Rivals I wrote: 369

60. "you're still asking if i feel the same? what do you think that kiss meant?"
Thanks for the prompt @wistfulweaverwoman
From this prompt list.
In-Panem, Post-Mockingjay
From the moment the day's thunderstorms began (so common in the summer months, they did nothing to help Katniss differentiate her Mondays from her Thursdays or any other day of the week, something a burned-out Mockingjay could have used some assistance with), it was already one hell of a day. The kind of day where everything felt dark and empty, and she wanted Peeta's company from the word go.
That was until realizing with each passing hour the day might have been best spent alone.
Not that she wanted to be alone. Never that. On her better days, Katniss could convince herself that he still cared about her and could someday love her again.
On the days like today, when the inside of her head wouldn't shut up and give her a damn break for one second, she couldn't persuade herself he did. Peeta was already getting tired of her, she knew, tired of spending his time with this shell of the person she used to be.
But Peeta was nothing if he wasn't loyal.
"Why are you still here?" she asked him that evening. She wouldn't look his way, her eyes dry and sore from hours spent staring at nothing between bouts of crying. It would have been safer alone with her muddled thoughts, not apt to say things that could drive him away. But she'd come up against a wall inside her head and it refused to give until she asked the question.
"Why am I here, in Twelve?" He asked. He was sprawled out on the living room floor with a sketchbook in front of him but hadn't drawn anything in it yet. His arms were folded, chin resting in the crook of one elbow.
Katniss sat, picking at the loose string of a sofa cushion. It took her a few moments to realize he was studying her, waiting for an answer. She looked up; he was frowning at her. "Yeah."
"This is my home," he said slowly as if he were talking to a small child, and the answer was obvious. "Everything I care about is here. How about you? Would you be somewhere else if you had a choice?"
"All I ever wanted was to come home," she said, leaving out the parts about Prim and her mother, who was too sad to acknowledge her older daughter's existence, and Madge and the bombed-out rubble of the district. "But I thought you had more options than me."
"Maybe. None I was interested in," Peeta said. "I've had enough new for the rest of my life, I think. Besides, you're here," he added, "where else would I go?"
Katniss shrugged, staring at the frayed cushion string. A tense moment passed until he sighed, got up off the floor, and joined her on the couch. He said her name to get her to look at him. When she met his eyes, he smiled and brushed the stray strands of hair away from her face. She blinked slowly; she felt herself trembling. His hands cradled the sides of her face, and he leaned in to kiss her.
It wasn't a passionate kiss, not like it'd been on the beach when desire could have easily overtaken them both, but solid and firm, an "I love you and I'm not going anywhere" kiss.
His lips on hers brought warmth back to her body and a tide of emotions she had to tuck away for later because she was too wrung out to process them. Except for a glimmer of happiness, that feeling was too sharp and bright to ignore.
His eyes were bright when he pulled away. He didn't let her draw away from him, grasping both her hands in his sturdy grip. "You're still asking if I feel the same? What do you think that kiss meant?"

Snippet from chapter six of The Apothecary’s Daughter:
The space on the mattress where Peeta slept is cold when I wake. He’d spent the entire night, as far as I can tell, facing the kitchen, his back to me, leaving me as much space as he could. There’s a bowl of congealing spiced porridge with fresh fruit and nuts on the work table, as well as a slice of cheese and chunk of that fermented sausage on a small plate. I swallow every bite mechanically and then wipe my dishes with a wash rag at the sink, setting them aside to dry.
Dust coats every surface in every room I’ve peeked into, excepting the kitchen. My skin and the back of my throat itch from the air. Having no employment or direction from Peeta I’m determined to scour every surface. After setting the kettles on the wood stove to heat water, I root out my oldest coveralls from my trunk and tie a kerchief over my unpinned braids. My work boots are not as well worn as my hunting boots were, but they’re comfortable enough. Everyone in Twelve has at least one pair of serviceable boots. No one is above hard work here, even Mage, who’s family employs servants to cook and clean.
There is running water at the sink, but cleaning just the hall and library takes me the better part of the day. Kneeling on the floor, scrubbing in circles, plunging my hand back in the bucket, wringing out the cloth. Over and over. It’s laborious work, but doesn't take much brain power. Try as I might to focus on the simple task of taking something filthy and making it clean, my mind wanders back to yesterday. I only break down completely twice, though, and only once am I overcome enough that I must halt completely in favor of burying my face into the crook of my elbow. Once I emerge the water has gone stone cold and I’m forced to boil more.
I consider putting away all books stacked on the table in the library but ultimately decide to leave them out as I am unsure if Peeta has plans to read them and simply shift them around to dust the tabletop.
Sometime in the late afternoon Peeta returns from whatever he’d been up to and prepares dinner.
Wet and sore I finally haul the bucket into the empty kitchen for the last time. A plate of food on the worktable greets me; a plate of eggs cooked with herbs and topped with goat cheese. Again the copper tub is steaming with water. The light is dim as the sun sets, but I don’t bother lighting a candle. There is a definite lack of hunger pangs, but I force myself to eat; the fear that I may not know when my next meal will be still lurks. I rush though my ablutions, dress for sleep, and slip into the far side of the bed, facing the wall, before Peeta returns.
It’s nearly dark when the door opens and shuts again. There are footsteps and then a heavy sigh. The mattress dips as he settles beside me. His breathing soft and the smell from his soap reaches my nose. It’s early to sleep, but I’m thoroughly exhausted and expect to fall asleep immediately.
I don’t.
The urge to roll over and press myself into Peeta’s side and bury my face in his neck is so strong that I feel queasy. Against my will, hot angry tears slip out from my eyes. I try to breathe as silently as possible but accidentally sniff when my nose starts to run. Peeta shifts closer to me. Close enough that I can feel the heat of him.
“Katniss?” he says, tentatively. “Is there anything I can do?” Surely he’s about to reach for me, place a large warm hand on my back and stoke it soothingly. Surely this will undo me. If he touches me, if I let him comfort me, I will be lost.
“Just tired,” I say, and sharply. As if to insinuate he’s bothering me. I grip the quilt with my fists as the gutted feeling returns, and clench my teeth to keep from sobbing.
“Sorry,” he says, softly. Sadly. His pain doubles my own. I remind myself that this is for the best, to cleave our attachment now, before-
He rolls away, his back now facing mine. I feel the absence of his warmth keenly.

Sure! @sohypothetically you're one of the few original mutuals of mine that are still active. We've been mutuals for NINE years!!
I joined the fandom at some point in the later half of 2013. Maybe because I was so new, or maybe because I got fairly lucky with my mutuals? Mostly I remember feeling really appreciated by my mutuals, they were excited that I was on that day and we knew if one of us was sick or had a date or something. I do think we reposted each others stuff more back then, and we used to have these very long reblog chats discussing and dissecting the texts. I was quite rabid about my theory that Peeta rips off Katniss's cape when she was on fire and point out why ALL of the time, as well as pointing out that any time Katniss mentions "strong arms" she talking about Peeta without saying who she's talking about.
Yeah, within the everlark crowd the anti-Gale hate was strong then, lots of fics where he's super controlling to the point that in many fics he rapes Katniss, which is wildly OOC. The Galniss crowd used to be way larger and more obnoxious. A lot of them shut up (or left) after MJ2 came out. Honestly, most fics were OOC with most of the characters.
I was never a super popular writer so that's probably part of it, though few of my mutuals were very popular and for sure had anon issues. My first fic (The Awkward In-Between) was nominated for best Hunger Games fanfic of all times (The Fanatic Fanfics Multifandom Awards) and we were encouraged to basically campaign to get people to vote for us. I never bothered because out of the other four nominees one was The Miners Wife and the other was When the Moon. LOL. It was literally a popularity contest.
What really stood out to me at the time was how ridiculous people were about Peeta and Katniss. In MOST fics Peeta was always portrayed as perfect and Katniss was always a heartless bitch. Obviously this comes from Katniss's own internal dialogue only and completely ignores/misses contextual evidence that paints an entirely different narrative. I remember being terrified of the backlash I was going to get by the perfect!Peeta crowd with my fic that not only contradicted popular fic culture, but used textual evidence to support my story. I had several discussions with my beta at the time. The hate never came, in part I think because I wasn't one of the popular writers, so I never came under the gaze of those who might attack me.
The other big thing at the time was that there were a LOT of anti-feminist trolls. They'd DM the meanest stuff. No to me, but to a mutual that became a target. They'd tell her that they hoped she was raped to death, and other just awful shit.
Since then we've had a lot of societal shifts. People started calling out rape culture, Me Too, BLM, OWS... these moments have all effected how people think and that in turn has effected the fandom and folks seem to have a more balanced view of everlark now.
Another big difference is there's a lot more people that really study the books and wring out every possible detail now. I think a lot of the OG fics were written by people that'd only read the books once, maybe twice, and read by people that only read the books once to twice. So the perfect!Peeta/bitch!Katniss became cannon-like to these people since they'd read more fics than than they'd read the books.
Before I ever joined the fandom I'd read the books though maybe five times and had written multiple character analysis and I went into the fandom and reading fanfic with a kind of horror. Luckily I came across a diamond early in my search for growing together fics (The List) and figured there'd be more.
When I took a break from the fandom it was for personal reasons, and I still kept in touch with some people via a Facebook group that still going years later.
It's important for context to understand that I was never an "inner circle" Everlarker. I lurked, I was ignored and I basically lived in my own little corner of the world.
Do you think fandom has changed since then?
Ah, Anon,
I think the fandom is different for sure. Or may I am. I don't know.
It's hard to describe how it was back then. Tumblr was such a different place and you had these amazing creators as well as people who were almost obnoxiously Everlark-centric. There was a lot of drama. Like, high-school-level drama. Mean girl stuff. People trying to be top of the heap. It was very, very competitive. And if you were interested in a different point of view -- like Gale not being the anti-Christ -- then people didn't dig that.
We had PIP (Prompts in Panem) and FandomforLLS, which showcased talent, but also made like little Hunger Games out of it. There were constant little gift exchanges or themed prompts that would fly around, and we compared whose stories were more popular. FandomforLLS actually was cross-fandom and people voted for stories. It was bragging rights, but it was a big deal. Then S2SL came about -- same thing. We all came together for a cause, but it was a bit of a popularity contest. If you didn't write drabbles, or smut, or weren't a fast writer who wrote cleanly, you were left behind. And if you wrote something unpopular, it followed you for a bit. We had divisive arguments over certain stories.
And then we had the earth shattering article heard around the world. It was meant to be a good thing that highlighted the best the fandom had to offer, but it named named for the "greats" and everyone else got their feelings hurt. It was awful.
So...is it different now ? I think there are still people who are very, very faithful to their pairing. I think adding TBOSAS changed things up because it added another primary couple/characters to the mix. But I think -- I hope -- that competitive feeding frenzy where we pitted one author against another is done.
I hope.
Anyone else want to share experience? I know mine doesn't sound positive, but I must have gotten something out of it because I'm still here!

The Hunger Games characters have some unique names based on many cultures we've lived in today.
What's your favourite character names from THG world? What's their names meaning?
Bonus questions :
If you're a fanfic writer writing about characters who lives in Panem, what's their name gonna be?
If you're a reader, what's a name you read in a THG fanfic that stuck with you?
Thank you, @curiousnonny
@wistfulweaverwoman has an AMAZING breakdown of Peeta's first and last name and the symbolism behind it. Please go read that post. I'm kind of obsessed with it.
Suzanne pays attention to where names come from, so for THG and her other series, The Underland Chronicles, fanfic authors have guidance in where to get names. For THG, Capitol gets their names from Latin/Roman influence. The Districts largely get theirs from their industry (Wiress, Thresh, Cashmere, Bobbin, Tanner, Reaper, etc.). District 2 seems to follow the Capitol with Latin/Roman influences (Cato, Sejanus, Marcus, etc.). The Covey get theirs from a name in a ballad and a color (which is explained in TBOSAS).
For District 12, quite a few Seam characters get their name from nature (Katniss, Gale, Primrose, Posy, Hazelle, Lil short for Lily, Spruce), while it's been my headcanon that the merchants get theirs from derivatives of Biblical names. I always associate Peeta with Peter before pita bread, Delly=Delilah, Madge=Margaret, Maysilee/Mayfair=Mary and though they're Seam, Sae=Sarah/Sariah, Thom=Thomas.
Long, long, long time ago before Peeta's brothers had the fanon names Rye and (some other bread-related name) I used the names Jam and Jonah to make them...Peter, James, and John. This was before Mockingjay released and I'd been hoping his brothers would live and they'd have a role in the rebellion, making the trio comparison apt. I'm still attached to these names though, even if his brothers didn't really do anything. Also in the now-deleted fic I wrote of Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen getting together, I named Mrs. Everdeen Ruth, after the Ruth in the Bible that left her family and people to live and care for her mother-in-law after her husband died. The story reminded me of Mrs. Everdeen leaving her family to marry Mr. Everdeen. I don't think anyone else has this more Biblically-oriented view of the townies of D12's names. And it could just be that a lot of English names are derived from Biblical names as it is and I'm stretching. But merchants do have a distinct lack of nature names in comparison to those from the Seam so I think there's something making their names distinct. A way of showing another divide between the two cultures in D12.

🤣
Okay @rosegardeninwinter I’ll unpack my thoughts on this. There’s a few things at play. First, she’s shy, and a bit of an introvert. She doesn’t even consider Madge a friend till Madge comes to visit her after she’s been reaped, even though they eat lunch together daily and always partner for school projects or PE.
This is where some of her trauma comes into play. She suffered terrible neglect after her father died at the hands of her mother, both emotionally and physically, resulting in her both feeling undeserving of love and a desire to not grow close to anyone for fear of being rejected again. This is why she was so resistant to accept Peeta’s love and so devastated when she learns of his hijacking and so irrationally angry with him when he starts to return to himself.
I think she does her best to keep most people at a distance, though she knows herself well enough to tell us “Kind people have a way of working their way inside me and rooting there.” There are a few people she thinks of fondly by Catching Fire, Madge, Gales family, and Greasy Sae (who she specifically brings food to when the trains stop coming).
This is after she’s won the games and therefore has the money to buy all the things necessary for survival and has the time and emotional availability to cultivate friendships.
Before the games her main concern was feeding her family and staying alive, and she couldn’t afford distractions. I don’t think it was a conscious idea, that she couldn’t afford to shift her focus beyond hunting and trading, it was just part of her instinct for survival. But just as her world view shifted and broadened throughout her arc, so did the amount of people that she came to care for.
Further, I’d like to point out that when she says that she will have as little to do with Peeta as possible (in reference to kind people rooting) she’s not acknowledging that it’s far too late, he’d rooted deep in her back when she was just 11 years old. That’s why she notices so many things about him when she barely acknowledges much else (even through the entire series, there’s so much text that requires analysis because she doesn’t consciously acknowledge the things that happen in her peripheral). It’s why she trusts him so quickly and feels betrayed when she discovers he’s asked to be coached on his own, and why she feels such hate when she thinks he’s actually working with the Careers.
Prim probably has a ton of friends as Katniss tells us that Prim is basically universally adored, but it’s just not specifically mentioned in the text because SC left out what wasn’t integral to the story.
It's so peculiar how the concept of friendship is non-existent in the Seam.
Because people do get married there but friendships are the type of relationships that are skipped?
It's understandable when the whole neighborhood focuses its energy on survival. Hunger is such a visceral need, it drives people, and it is their priority.
But we're not presented to any other characters around Katniss' age or classmates. The kids from her school that have names are Madge and Delly, merchants.
Haymitch didn't have any friends mentioned in his young years.
Lucy says they don't have much contact with Seam people, because they still see her and her family as outsiders.
Even after Katniss becomes a closed person, she is still able to view other people as potential friends if they were in different circumstances. So probably Seam kids think like this too, they just happen to live in an environment that turns simple human connections into another form of unreachable luxury.
