This is Zu—I mean, Jian Li and Katara's second meeting in the Kyoshi Warriors AU. The first proper one, anyway.

Once they get through a minor difference of opinion or two (“I can carry my own basket!” “Never said you—” “I'm not weak!” “I didn't—” “Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean—” “Would you listen for once, woman?!” ) they'll become nearly inseparable.

For now Jian Li will carry Katara's basket all the way to the Kyoshi Warriors' dojo and, once there, they'll mercilessly tease Sokka when they see him in uniform.

I've been thinking about Mal and Aerin's dynamic, and how Aerin really did a number on Mal's growing desire to actually trust people.

Mal start with a very (understandably) negative view of the nobility, including Aerin.

But, Aerin wins him over pretty quickly. He's nice and and willing to get his hands dirty (relatively speaking).

Through the power of friendship, Mal slowly learns to trust people! He's very upfront about that if you romance him.

Now, Mal's general attitude toward nobles stays consistent, but Aerin is the exception. He's understandably skeptical of Aerin's no-cost solution to their problem, but he lets him put the plan in place. Mal lets himself trust Aerin.

Right up until Aerin proves Mal right. Aerin wants what he feels like the world owes him, and he's willing to hurt anyone in his way to do it. To Mal, I'm sure it feels like he let his guard down and the whole party suffered for a year as a result.

And then, after all the trauma of MC disappearing and coming back, MC goes, 'Yeah, you know that guy who almost killed us all last year after gaining our trust? He's coming too.'

But then Aerin seems kind of genuine. And even when he leaves, Mal isn't pissed or sad like everyone else. I think there's part of him that like, 'Yeah, that's what I would have done 2 years ago.' He's not happy with Aerin! But I think he understands it as a familiar self-protective thing on some level.

I think the key to their dynamic, and Aerin's influence on Mal's arc, is how similar they are in a lot of ways.

They both communicate via jokes and sarcasm when uncomfortable (which is a lot of the time). Both are very understandably misanthropic after their childhoods. They have a similar arc of accepting that there are people who deserve their trust and protection.

I would guess the corruption piece is a little confusing to Mal (I know it is to me), but generally, he gets it. I think it's why his attitude toward Aerin changes so fast when he comes back. Aerin points out that Mal has benefitted from having the opportunity to change and prove himself. And Mal is willing to give Aerin a second (third? Who's counting) chance. He goes from "I might slit your throat," to being the one to shake his hand in a "We're cool" gesture in like, a minute!

Come on, Mal would not participate in banter with Aerin if he wasn't a little fond of him.

please elaborate on jeremy & aaron getting closer in the raven jeremy au 👀👀

OKAY SO.

we're jumping through a lot of hoops here to reach a point where (ex-)raven jeremy becomes a fox, so a little background first: in this au, the raven cult grew around him slowly to suck him in and his business major was numbing his brain (it's a literature kids thing yes) BUT he wasn't hit as hard as the other ravens because 1) he joined halfway through the first semester and everybody hated him, 2) he wasn't perfect court so he didn't get the worst of it, 3) kevin was obsessed with the trojans and wanted to be friends with him so he had that, 4) literature student-typical critical thinking and ability recognise a dystopia when he sees it, and 5) he already hated his life and was pretty self-destructive so he was kinda in a mindset of "lemme poke this bear and see how much worse it can get from here". all that is to say, he's more aware of what's going on than most of the others are, and when he sees what's happening (esp with the perfect court) he immediately clocks it as something deeply wrong

so he becomes the first official member of the Jean Moreau Protection Squad (but in a smart way: he's slowly accrued his jeremy "sunshine" knox personality but worse (more here) and this only makes the others hate him more, but tetsuji likes this because it's good for the ravens' pr so he's weirdly on jeremy's side so riko can't hurt him too much). he's fiercely but quietly defensive of jean and he does his best to come in the way of the worst bits and he succeeds to a certain extent. he tries to convince jean to leave the ravens with him and kevin after the skiing accident but jean won't so jeremy stays behind with him. later, he's left behind when renee rescues jean because he'd been locked away at the time so he couldn't try to get jean out. stuff proceeds as in canon, then the final game happens and jeremy asks ichirou for the gun and shoots riko, then jeremy asks wymack if he can join the foxes (at this point he thinks jean is joining the foxes too because. he wasn't there so he doesn't know) and is pretty damn shocked with he finds out jean's transferring to the trojans. he stays a fox though, and his relationship with kevin is pretty fraught rn because obviously, and he's honestly kinda completely alone again. and honestly. isn't aaron minyard the loneliest fox?

aaron doesn't trust jeremy, because of course he doesn't. why would he trust a liar? and jeremy doesn't care about aaron, because of course he doesn't.

but eventually, the two loneliest foxes get talking, first because they somehow end up sitting next to each other by virtue of being the least spoken to. aaron is funny as heck and makes a joke under his breath, and jeremy hears him and laughs, which isn't something that happens often (as in people don't laugh at aaron's jokes often) so aaron is kinda taken aback. later, something related to that joke happens and they exchange glances, and aaron is like yeah. okay. this is. nice. and then jeremy goes to sit next to aaron on purpose and aaron tries to make more jokes because somebody laughing with him is. kinda intoxicating. and jeremy has his Jeremy Smile, obviously, but then aaron sees his littler, eviler smile. and then one time he catches jeremy in the middle of a panic attack and talks him through it, and then jeremy avoids him for a week because of course he does and aaron resigns himself to the fact that he and jeremy aren't actually friends because aaron minyard isn't allowed to have nice things, but eventually jeremy comes back and decides to let aaron a little in and give him a bit of honesty. and it goes from there :)

read the list that mentioned keith and akira growing up together in the earthbound krolia au and !! i think that's my favourite tbh, like. i can't remember if heath lives but if he doesn't then that's 200% MORE absolutely insane b/c here are these identical desert hermits who nobody knows, who know very little about like, popular culture and they literally speak their own language that no one can figure out (how are they making those noises??) and they're both phenomenal pilots who were taken under THE takashi shirogane's wing

Yeah, Heath still dies in that AU so it's literally just single mom Krolia raising her Keith by herself- or in this case, the twins. She rigs up some illusion tech that lets her blend in a little easier... or at least the Krolia definition of 'blending in' which basically means not being visibly purple.

I think Keith and Akira in the Garrison together would drive like. so many people insane. They're probably two of the best pilots they've ever seen, but they're also just so weird. They don't live on campus housing. They live out in the desert with their mom, who is also very weird. They mostly seem to kind of just ignore everyone else around them, except for Shiro and Adam.

And it's not out of malevolence, necessarily! It's the same kind of tunnel vision that really only let Keith see James because he was on a closer level to him than Lance ever was. He's number one, and then there's the guy right below him- and maybe tangentially the other top five. So if Keith has a twin who shares his reflexes and piloting abilities, they're basically just going to spend all their time at the Garrison competing with each other.
