Lord, what is it with people who claim to like classics, but hate classical languages? Specifically, but not exclusively, people who treat the reconstruction of classical languages as a worthless endeavor. Ignoring the fact that language as a spoken medium is integral to any culture, how is that not in the least bit cool to you? Why don't you want to know what Latin and Ancient Greek and Old Persian might have sounded like? You don't want to reconstruct an accurate picture of the classical world? You don't want to figure out how it all intersected?
I'm not even touching on the debate of whether these languages should be taught conversationally, or solely taught to be read (though personally, I'm in the camp of, "you will learn to sight read better if you also learn to speak.") I've encountered an outright hostility toward the idea of learning these languages from people otherwise interested in classics, and it baffles me. People studying classics at a university level who think Latin and Greek are a waste of time, and theoretical pronunciation, vernacular reconstruction, etc. are all pointless. Who claim this attitude was actually fostered by their professors.

When you absolutely despise something a lot of people like, and no matter what way you look at it you cannot see the appeal, but you know you can’t talk about it in public or else you’ll get dogpiled to hell and back, so you just kinda sit there frothing at the mouth like this

the thing that gets me whenever i hear about finnish is hearing that spoken and written finnish is "different". Like when I first heard about this i was like "Yeah duh as it is with literally every language to ever exist" but it turns out it's like ..... DIFFERENT different????? how does that work. what happens if I go to finland and transcript something spoken as is. will they take me out back and shoot me

#i think it’s time i go back to therapy#i keep having recurring nightmares about my ex best friend#or dreams where she reaches out to me. and explains why she cut me out#backstory. in high school had a lesbian toxic situationship with my#bestie. THEN i had another one. which kinda overlapped? the first one was open but also just messy#anyways. jade and i were like together for a year. then she got a boyfriend one day and i had a breakdown#it happened just after high school and i was sooooo … unwell. wasn’t out to my family felt like i was gonna die etc etc#(this is all pre dnp btw) anyways next year i found dnp. a couple months later she broke up with her bf#and we sorted dated for a while (this whole time we’d been just friends and i was still not really over it but hiding it)#and then she dated ANOTHER guy. they broke up and she had a breakdown and moved 9 hours away. i went#to visit her for a month. we like kinda dated again then and i thought we could make it work. then 2020. no travel#so she started dating a guy. didn’t tell me. even though we spoke every day. she moved in with him#then she breaks up with him mid 2021. i started dating my gf. but Jade was clingy and it was awkward#she started dating a sketchy guy who was homophobic. i went and visited her a few times#start of 2023 she tells me she wants to make more of an effort cause he didn’t like her friends so she cut everyone out. then she ghosted#in feb 2023. we had tickets for#mcr in march. i had to text her cause she’d blocked me on messenger and said im going to the concert whether she’s there or not#she said ‘yeah no worries! you can take someone else in my place too 😎’ she used that fucking emoji#and I haven’t spoken to her since. I think she quit her job . and that guy was not a nice man#so I still worry about her#writing this all down makes me realise she was a bitch and I deserve better#but I just want closure. it isn’t fair she replied so casually to my text when I said ‘you’ve blocked me’#it isn’t fair she HAS MY SIGNED COPY OF DANS BOOK#anyways. funniest part about western media news bias is they will relay what the US/'israel'/Europe says and does with full confidence inclusive of threats but they don't show what the opposition is saying with any vigour unless it can be taken out of context to match The Same Perspective

Woe, 1839 German bible uncovered in family attic be upon ye!
included: names/birthdays from 1892-1985, a pressed flower, a printed condolence card (1913)
not included: several locks of hair, a handmade condolence card (march 1842), 5 deitsch marriage certificates (1851-1935) lots of notes written in deitsch, and the chemise it was wrapped in
#anyways we found all this clearing out my great-great aunt’s house after her passing 6 years ago#There was a photo album too!! I think the earliest one was dated 1871 but don’t quote me on it#I might post photos of it next time I visit my hometown because it’s gorgeous#the benefit of your family never leaving 1 very small county is that there ends up being a lot of history#also it’s really fascinating because my family spoke deitsch in the home up through the forties so a lot of the notes#Written in are minor translations (deitsch is linguistically distinct but Very similar to german)#All of my great-relatives (and the handful of great-greats that I met) could/can still speak a little#Unfortunately WW1/WW2 meant that deitsch pretty much died out everywhere except Amish/mennonite communities#My grandparents still know a couple words but haven’t really spoken it since they were kids#HOWEVER I have learned that some of my/my family’s weird grammar (which I discovered was weird very late in life) is a holdover from deitsc#This has been your obscure linguistics infodump of the day thanks for listening#Whispers from the ally

if i had a nickel for every time the best friend duo that was the cornerstone of an entire trilogy got split apart at the end of the 3rd movie, ruining the entire trilogy for me, i'd only have 2 nickels, but it's strange that it's happened twice

Had THE funniest dream last night
#i was roommates with this couple who for some reason decided they were going to bone directly outside the house#like on the front porch more or less#except they were really worried about being seen? so i was kind of keeping a lookout for them#pretty much as soon as they.. began; a legolas cosplayer appeared complete with a camera crew#OH THAT WAS THE THING! my roommates were filming themselves but it was just on a mounted tripod#so i just opened the window and said ‘uhhh do you guys have a camera crew?’ and they looked around and screamed#had to run inside naked from the waist down. i was laughing and laughing#for some reason my next move was to post about this on tumblr but it got no notes and i was impatient so i posted about it on facebook#and TONS of people liked it immediately and then were sharing it and long story short it went viral#and there were random people in the comments saying like ‘oh this is so obviously fake’ and ‘why does she sound so unconcerned?’#because why would i be concerned?? gay sex is legal.. having it where other people can see isn’t exactly legal but they got inside quickly#and the legolas cosplayer and his camera crew didn’t exactly seem traumatised. they just looked confused if anything#also i’d written it in kind of a sarcastic and funny tone to be entertaining because it was honestly an absurd situation#why i would’ve posted this to FACEBOOK where most of my friends are my elderly relatives; ex-coworkers and high school people i don’t know#anyway that was my dream. two guys i vaguely know had four-second sex on my front porch; saw a legolas cosplayer; screamed and ran inside#OH and the other part of my dream was one of my mutuals on here (who i have only spoken to via prev tags) for some reason had my mobile#number and kept trying to call me#i had them in my phone just as their tumblr url even though they have a name and i know it? and for some reason i kept panicking#and rejecting the call and then coming up with spurious reasons for doing so#even though this person was extremely chill about it and was like ‘oh we can just talk another time!’#it made NO sense. i would absolutely speak to this person on the phone if i got the chance#but also why would i give them my number? and why would they be calling me from the states??#anyway. if you need me i’m going to make breakfast and go to pilates#personal
