Can we talk about this poor man's mental health for one minute, please?

This man is such an open book compared to some of his co-workers. Brad, for example, is so aloof and ambiguous because he hates the idea of people getting close to him. He knows that's how he gets hurts and/or hurts others. Hence why we know little to nothing about who he really is and what his homelife is like. David isn't afraid to be open. He's dramatic, anxious, scared, and he trauma dumps like no one I've ever seen (bar myself).

This is a character that gets walked all over and tries so hard to see the best in everyone at any given moment. A man who appears optimistic despite the fact that he's a child of divorce, he had a drunk father, a mother who clearly didn't give a shit about him, and had a traumatic divorce himself.

The way David's character is written, and how Hornsby portrays him, is quite close to genius. Every moment displayed here showcases a time David was vulnerable and struggling with his mental health. However, we're constantly side-tracked by the comedic playoff of each scene that we subliminally render David's experiences as "funny" or "unserious". He's intentionally written as a comic relief character, which makes his reality that much more unsettling to unpack.

We're so blind-sighted by other character's reactions to David and how the script is quickly flipped that we forget this man is a suicidal depressive who self-medicates, drinks heavily and has a crippling fear of losing people he cares about.

Christ, he was about to throw himself from the roof of their building after learning Brad was arrested, Poppy and Ian were leaving, and Rachel and Dana were moving away to Berkley. The one thing that snapped him out of his suicidal thought was assuming Jo was about to do the same, and he couldn't risk losing anyone else.

Because he was showcased as an open book from the very beginning, we assume there's nothing else underneath David's surface. Everyone else's trauma is so much more transparent than his, swaying us to believe he's just a 40 something year old man trying his absolute darndest under the circumstances.

David Brittlesbee is possibly one of the most complex characters I've ever seen in modern media, and I will be walking into the canal the day we get some sort of backstory for him. My heart won't be able to handle it.

Like, the crux of House and Wilson’s relationship for Wilson is that Wilson is somewhat preforming kindness and empathy, and around House he doesn’t have to. He can be fucked up and a little weird, and play increasingly destructive pranks. He can fight with house, and punch him in the face and ask him to dinner a second later and he doesn’t have to preform normality because there is genuinely nothing he can do to ruin this friendship.

And the crux of House and Wilson’s relationship for House is that Wilson see past House’s bs and sees the sliver kindness in House’s heart, the one house keeps hidden away deep under layers of sarcasm and insults. It’s not all the time, as house still gets defensive when Wilson says something that hits a “sore spot”, but House is still kinder with Wilson than he is with anyone else, he shares his fears with Wilson, and makes sacrifices to make him happy. He doesn’t have to preform his “asshole persona” because Wilson’s the only safe person to be venerable with.

This is why they need each other, because they have to preform with everyone else, and they always end up back together because we all need someone we can be authentic with, and it’s why they’re so lonely without each other.

when i say percy is one of the only people in the world who will stand up to annabeth or call her wrong, i do NOT mean she’s a horrible person and he calls her out for being one. allow me to write a long incorrect quote scene to show you what i actually mean:

annabeth, pinching the bridge of her nose: percy, you’re talking about a full frontal assault on their strongest point. that’s reckless. we’ll be outnumbered and overwhelmed.

percy, stepping closer to the map and pointing to the terrain: not if we use their terrain, which i personally know. if we concentrate our forces here and here, we can create the illusion of a weaker center. they’re crazy strong, but much more arrogant than you’re assuming. so knowing them, they’ll all focus on our main assault, assume they have us outnumbered, and put all their energy into trying to punch through. but if we’ve got our best fighters hidden in the valleys, instead of holding back, we can hit them from both sides once they commit

annabeth, her brow furrowing as she considers percy’s plan: we’d be baiting them into a trap. they’d think they’re winning, but the second they overextend, we surround them. they won’t see it coming because of the way their ranks are arranged.

percy: exactly

annabeth: it’s based off the assumption of their own tactical shortcomings, but… it’s brilliant. come here and show me all the pathways, and i’ll plan for the side attacks. do you have any advice there?

percy: nope, i need you for that part

I love how messy Katniss and Peeta were lowkey. Like Katniss saying she’s choosing Gale over Peeta, yet spending all her time with Peeta. She’s also thirsting after him and his eyelashes. LITERALLY , the guy Gale is most worried about lmfaoo Peeta thinking that Katniss is with Gale, yet shamelessly flirting with her and cuddling/being overly affectionate with her behind close doors.

Then it really gets messy in MJ, where Katniss is like “yeah just like how it felt wrong kissing Peeta bc of you” to Gale, and several chapters later she legit kisses Peeta in front of Gale, bc that’s is her mf man. And Peeta like spilling the tea about how he and Katniss slept together (obvi not like that) during the victory tour in front of Gale, like ik Gale felt his stomach dropped. And then Peeta back peddling at Gale “oh yeah it’s you who she’s loves, not me,” and atp Gale reaction is to laugh at Peeta’s face. Like Peeta and Katniss really are messy, and I love that bc they’re so down bad for each other, especially Katniss with her pearl and fantasizing Peeta’s lips and hands on her.

Insane again thinking about Sonic and Tails

Everyone always talks about the ways in which Tails is dependent on or revolves around Sonic. We talk about the ways in which he's depended on Sonic to save him, the way he likes tagging along on journeys, the way Sonic has inspired him, the way he always maintains Sonic's plane, leaves his door open for him with place to rest and good food to eat

But we rarely talk about the ways in which Sonic is secretly dependent or reliant on Tails

In a large portion of the games, if Tails isn't straight up on the journey alongside him, Sonic has the security that Tails can communicate with him from afar, and Tails usually appears to help out at some point during one of Sonic’s solo journeys. He doesn't have to be without Tails for long

And we see what happens (especially in Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Prime) when Tails is inaccessible. In Frontiers, he wonders where Tails aloud is unprompted, wanting to find him. Sonic's other friends even convince him to bother with the secrets of the starfall islands because doing so may lead him to Tails. He wants to find Tails so Tails can make sense of what's happening. And in Prime, Sonic ends up scrambling without Tails around. Especially in Prime S1 while things make the least sense, he seeks out Tails first (and then later hopes variants other than Nine can fill Tails' role) because he trusts him. He trusts that if Tails is here, then he can just tell Sonic what to do (come up with a plan for him to execute). With Tails around, Sonic doesn’t have to worry about not understanding the situation because Tails can figure it out. Without Tails, Prime!Sonic often shifts between trying to handle things himself to the best of his knowledge while rolling with the punches, and deferring to someone he can trust as a smarter strategizer to tell him what to do (a role Nine fills most notably, but other characters such as Rebel and Shadow fill on the occasion).

Of course there's also the earlier mentioned way in which Tails takes care of Sonic as well. I'm sure Tails isn't Sonic's only friend that he could crash with, but it's Tails who goes to such lengths to open his arms for him. If Sonic wants to crash in an actual house, if he wants to eat his favorite food, if he just wants to hang out, or if he needs help, Tails's home is open to him, accommodating his every need.

In my eyes, Sonic is the one who is surprisingly codependent here, who flounders a bit when everything goes to shit, Tails is nowhere to be found and can't be contacted, and there's no one else that can help him make sense of things. He takes Tails with him on so many journeys, even in games like Colors, where Tails largely follows behind Sonic while Sonic does a lot of the physical work. Tails doesn't need to be "useful" to tag along. He likes having Tails around, he wants Tails around. When Tails can't go with him or it's something Sonic should go alone for, he can always communicate with him and hear his voice from afar. And I'd argue there are more examples than Sonic Prime that may demonstrate Sonic trying to find someone to fill Tails' role the first chance he can get when Tails isn't around and can't be contacted.

The conclusion here is that a lot of people talk about Tails being dependent on Sonic or revolving around him, but they truly are partners. Sonic wants to be around Tails at this point perhaps as much as Tails always wants to be around Sonic. The two are strong together, they fill each other's gaps in ability. They both feel more secure when the other is around, and they rely on each other's presence. They are each a comforting existence to the other in similar and different ways.
