A/n: Here you are, the winner of my recent poll. Just a little fun headcanon while I work on another request. It should be ready by Wednesday or Thursday.

Bi-Han

This wasn't usually like Bi-Han, of all things the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei was, invading someone's privacy wasn't one of them. Until today of course.

Today was the 4th time in a row that you were missing from your training session with him. He would've thought that being allowed to train with the Lin Kuei's very own grandmother would be considered an honor. Yet here he was, standing alone looking like a fool waiting for you.

Bi-Han does not like being stood up, especially not by you. You whom he holds in such a high regard. He has so much respect for, he is generally fond of you, he feels things for you he can't even explain. So he goes to look for you, bringing him to your room.

He enters with even knocking, you don't deserve such a thing with how many times you stood him up. When he sees you aren't here he turns to leave, still eager to find, to let you know how hurt furious he is by your actions.

But before he can make it to the door, he sees something at the corner of his eye. A book. No, not just any book. Your diary.

Bi-Han thinks such things are stupid, and a waste of time. Nonsense made for children not adults. Surely anyone who partakes in this are ridiculous...But...this is your diary, and he doesn't think your ridiculous or a child at all.

He picks it up, showing care as he holds it carefully in his hands. He inspects from front cover to the back with a perplexed curiosity. Why would anyone have this? Why would you have this? He holds you in such a high regard that he views such trivial things as beneath you. What could be so important you would need have your very thoughts and deepest darkest secrets left on paper.

He knows his brothers wouldn't hesitate to open it and read. But not him though. Because unlike them he has restraint, he has strength, he has-

Bi-Han starts flipping through the pages. There has to be something in here that explains why you've so distant and absent lately. His eyes scan each and every word like they have a sacred meaning.

He especially looks for parts where you talk about him. Surely you will speak with utmost respect for your grandmaster. Maybe you explain why you've been avoiding him too.

Eventually he finds a part where you bring him up, he completely ignores the part where you talk about his brothers and goes straight t6o part where he is involved.

He takes notice with how you talk about him. You talk about how you felt butterflies in your stomach when you were near him, the way he made your heart race, the fear you had that he'd notice you blushing, how much you loved him, you wanted to be with him until the end of all time. You then go one to say the dirtiest, the most depraved things he has ever read in his life about him.

But Bi-Han reads on. He takes note of all the nasty things you'd like him to do to you. Part of him is slightly appalled. The other is very amused.

After staring at it for a while, Bi-Han clears his throat and sits the book back to where he found it and leaves.

From that point on, you can't help but notice that Bi-Han has been staring at you whenever you were in the same room. He is noticeably more patient with you than he was before. In fact, it's almost like he's being nice to you.

He has never really thought of you in such a manner before, but now, now you have his interest.

Kuai Liang

Like his brother, Kuai is a man very respectful of other people's privacy...sort of. Kuai will respect your privacy most of the time, he'll try to at least.

Kuai had been looking for you all day, he wanted to talk to you about a very private Lin Kuei business. He also wanted to see you again, just hearing your voice made his day better. But you were just friends so he never told you about it because then that would make things weird.

Kuai gets to your door and gently knocks before he enters. He happily calls your name as he enters. When he sees that you aren't present he disappointedly turns to leave. But he catches something in the corner of his eye.

He goes to pick it up, he doesn't really know what it is at first. He's not as familiar with concpt as Bi-Han and Tomas. So he opens it and starts reading. It doesn't take him long to figure out what it is after reading the first page.

After that something clicks and he goes to put it down and leave. Or that is at least what he wants to do. He is so tempted to continue that he has to remind himself how wrong thus is.

To continue reading is wrong. It's a violation of you, one of his closest friends. Besides, he is an honorable man, he believes in duty and respect and-

Anyway, now he is sitting on your bed reading through your diary like it's the Bible. He's basically halfway through the books so he convince himself that it's far too late to turn back now.

He is specifically interested in reading what you have to say about him. So he flips ahead to a writing log where you mention him. Kuai takes a deep breath before reading, he generally hopes you like him.

You talk about how nice you think Kuai is, how cool, also hot he is. Pun intended.

It took Kuai a few seconds to process what you just said. He reads on, finding more writing logs about him and they all say similar things about how attracted you are to him. He gets one specific one where you were talking about all the things you liked about him.

Kuai was overwhelmed with all this affection you had on paper for him. At the end, you confess that you have feelings for him, that you were in love with him.

Kuai couldn't believe what he was seeing, it was on paper in front of him yet he still couldn't believe it. He sets the book back where he found it and quickly leaves your room.

The next coming days were tough for him. Whenever he looked at you, all he could think about was your words. He was still in shock, this all felt so unreal. He stares into your eyes and wonders how long you felt this way, if you still feel this way.

He wants to come up to you, tell me that he feels the same way. But that would also mean he'd have to confess about reading your diary. Would you be forgiving if he tells you? Maybe, you'll just need time to forgive.

He will just fantasize about the potential future he could have with you if everything goes. Please, Elder gods of you're listening, let things go well.

Tomas

Tomas is a sweetheart, that is known. But he is also a very nosey sweetheart. Unlike his brothers, Tomas is a very curious person. That often is much to his and others slcurgrine

He comes to your room with the hopes of being able to hang out with you. Kuai and Bi-Han were always so busy so it was often you two who hung out the most.

Tomas enjoys the time he spent with you. Bi-Han and Kuai can often be pretty intense for him to be around, so he finds comfort with being just with you.

After knocking a few times he enters, much to his disappointment you aren't here. He goes to leave hoping to find you, until he notices your diary. It caught his attention the single second he laid eyes on it. He immediately recognizes what it is, he has one himself.

The thoughts of opening and reading all your dark and dirty secrets pop into Tomas's head instantly. I can't, he thinks. How could I possibly do this to you? I would be violating your personal space. There could be something in there that is really embarrassing, or be about your deepest darkest desires, maybe even someone you might have a crush on.

Tomas tries to fight off the temptation to read it, but he fails. He carefully picks up the book and opens it. Already he feels filthy with guilt.

He begins to look through it, every page feels like a sin to read, but he couldn't stop reading. The thrill of it all kept him going to the point that he already got through almost half of the book. He laughed at your most embarrassing stories, he felt sad when you expressed any tragedy or hardship you faced, he felt overjoyed at your victories.

He felt pretty good...until you began to talk about him and his brothers. At this point he got nervous at what you could potentially think about him and his brothers, especially him. It was pretty standard things, you thought Kuai was nice, Bi-Han was a hothead, and you thought Tomas was cute...wait...

Tomas's eyes grew ten inches wide at this. What? N-No, that's all wrong he has to read it again. Cute? What do you mean cute? Cute as in nice, o-or as in attractive. Surely you meant as in kind.

He flips forward, finding another log where you talked about him. Here you go into much more detail about how you felt towards Tomas, how much you loved, the way he made useful so giddy, you just wanted to plant kisses him all over his cute little face.

Tomas, jaw on the floor and eyes wide opened to the point of almost popping out, couldn't believe what he was reading. He cheeks were turning red with blush and he was without words as he continued reading. Okay, now he really regrets reading this.

In a panicked state, Tomas throws your book somewhere and runs out of your room.

The next few days were hell for Tomas. He felt like such a horrible friend. He betrayed your trust and privacy, and now he knows that you're in love with him. He feels horrible whenever he sees and remembers what he's read, how he invaded your privacy.

As he continues, Tomas can't help but think of you differently now. He fears that he's falling in love with you now. He thinks. He doesn't know.

Gods, he just wishes he never opened that book. Now he has developed feeling for you in such a rapid pace, he doesn't know what to do. Maybe he'll just have to confess to reading your diary.

He plans too eventually, the guilt eats him up every day. He just needs to work up the courage to do so. Hopefully you won't hate him, please don't hate him.

It's interesting that the episode description straight up warned for Stolas lacking self-awareness. It's more or less a confirmation that Stolas and his character arc aren't finished, and between that and the content of the last couple episodes, I ended up going back through the series and looking at the path he's taken so far. Warning now, there's a lot of 'deconstructing' Stolas at first, but I do think he's on a positive trajectory and the set up serves as foundation for future character development.

Anyway for anyone interested in a from-the-beginning rundown of Stolas's arc, full post is below.

From his first conversation with Blitzø, you have Stolas in his bath making the favors for favors offer, while Blitzø is working and in a life-or-death situation. The language Stolas is using is too formal; it causes communication issues, and Blitzø has to tell him to stop using "rich person talk." The scene that sets up their whole dynamic is 1. Stolas establishing the transaction (given he could've straight up punished Blitzø for stealing or just taken back the book, this isn't bad; it just is), 2. Stolas at leisure while Blitzø's job has him in danger, and 3. the class/education difference resulting in Blitzø having difficulty understanding what Stolas is saying.

Move forward to Loo Loo Land. The language Stolas uses with Blitzø gets a lot of attention already, as does Stolas's rather poor grasp of social cues/difficulty seeing outside his own perspective causing him to clash with Octavia. One point I don't see raised as often is that Stolas hiring Blitzø to spend time together, when he doesn't need a bodyguard, and then sexualizing Blitzø while he does his job, is both condescending, and doesn't show much respect for what Blitzø actually does. He pays him more or less to put on a show, so Stolas can indulge a fantasy of them having a relationship (not because he's evil, because he doesn't know better).

Then you've got Stolas in the newest episode, getting annoyed with Blitzø for saying he thought Stolas couldn't be hurt because he was immortal. That if I.M.P. could handle Striker, Stolas surely could. Stolas's sarcastic, "It's not an imp's place to protect a Goetia, is it?" comes across different when considering Stolas literally once hired them as mock bodyguards. It just... escapes him, why Blitzø would think the idea of Stolas needing their help is outrageous. Never mind how clear Stolas's rescue in Truthseekers made their power disparity. Stolas often has trouble putting himself in other people's shoes, and it shows here.

The Harvest Moon Festival brings in Striker, who's basically a "class problems" mouthpiece, exaggerated for emphasis. He even remarks directly on how Stolas's treatment of Blitzø can look from the outside. There's also the episode's opening bedroom scene, where Stolas's idea of flirty talk is copious use of microaggressions, plus the later scene with Blitzø snapping about Stolas not using his proper name. It's likely not an accident that these things happen the same episode Striker appears.

Truthseekers has "impish little plaything," with honorable mention to Stolas pinching Blitzø's cheek and scolding I.M.P. like children. But it also has Blitzø's vision all but screaming how Stolas makes him feel. On the one hand, it's Stolas who brings him back to himself. He washes away the muck. He's something beautiful amidst the ugliness. But he's on a pedestal, he has Blitzø in chains. He has shadow Blitzøs fanning him like servants, and Blitzø stumbles away from him blind and mute, smothered by feathers.

Ozzie's is actually good for Stolas's development, because he gets his first reality check when Blitzø makes it clear he thinks Stolas only wants sex. (It also shows how Stolas feels about Blitzø behind the bad erotic-novel scripts he's been using, which is the first time the audience sees this outright). After that, Stolas realizes his relationship with Blitzø was problematic. He sees the transaction and gets rid of it, and he senses something off with his behavior that has him start calling Blitzø by name and stopping with the 'plaything' type remarks.

But the past two episodes have made it evident he'd made those realizations in a vacuum. His broader class awareness is basically nonexistent, and when Blitzø tries raising the issue, he groups Blitzø with Striker by default, as if any criticism of his status/wealth/privilege is unreliable and antagonistic toward him specifically. He refuses to sincerely consider that Blitzø isn't merely judging him, and that he might be saying something with legitimate basis.

The Circus is especially interesting. Aside from the commentary underlying the 'buying Blitzø' plot, the episode shows Stolas getting scolded by Paimon like a dog for showing respect to an imp; that likely wouldn't have been an isolated incident. It's played somewhat for humor ("I'm so good at daddying"), but it also shows why he'd have so much trouble with things like microaggressions. He has literally been trained to hold himself above others. And just going off the way Stolas is framed at Stella's party, isolated and alone, being laughed at by Stella and her friends, I suspect Stolas may see himself as a "good rich person," because he doesn't seem to fit well with the Goetia either; he's laughed at and bullied, he lacks privilege in his own ways. He identifies more with other demons than his own class--and it blinds him, I think, to the fact that he is still part of his class, and isn't immune to the problems that come with that.

Even in Seeing Stars, there's the moment with Stolas all but strangling that poor butler and hardly seeming to notice. In an episode that's almost entirely focused on father-daughter relationships, that still gets tossed in. Regarding the Octavia plot, Stolas lacking self-awareness comes up again; it's understandable that he's distracted with the divorce, and we do see him try to resolve the issue, but it feels like a quiet alarm indicating hey, you might have a recurring problem where your daughter is concerned.

Western Energy is another 'Striker shouting that class issues matter in this show' moment. While I think Stolas going the 'well, you're part of the system, so you can't complain' route when Striker tries bringing it up is loosely relevant, I also don't blame him for that one. Poor guy is being tortured, he deserves some slack. Oops, in my opinion, shows Stolas at his best; he's just been turned down by Ozzie, but he still sticks around and helps. We even see how sincerely happy he is when Fizz returns. It's a good example of how decent Stolas can be beneath it all, as well as his sense of romance appearing in a healthier way.

Then come Full Moon and Apology Tour, where most of the Stolas subtext gets screamed and/or bitterly snapped in his face by Blitzø. It's stated directly by the main character that those things matter, in a way that imo portrays Blitzø as at least partially sympathetic. And of course the Apology Tour episode description, yelling it for the folks in back.

What all this is trying to say is: 90% of Stolas's time on screen has set him up to have a 'getting more self aware' arc. I see a lot of accusations of the show babying Stolas, but I think it's more that it hasn't gotten around to doing what it wants with Stolas. There are 4 seasons. We're in the second. We've had Stolas's post-Ozzie's revelation, and now he's getting a lot more "you're part of the problem" feedback thrown his way. It's implied Octavia is going to contribute to that as well.

Anyway!! My personal guess so far is that if the "loses his powers and/or titles" theory that's been going around has any merit, that's going to instigate the start of actual, substantial change. Will that actually happen? No idea. But Stolas's flaws have been as articulated and developed as Blitzø's, and at this point, if the consequences aren't explored in the same way, it'll be dropping a ball that's already well in the air. I also think this isn't going to be a "fixed by the end of season 2" thing. Stolas problably won't appear again until Mastermind, and then there's just Sinsmas. There isn't time for him to change in two episodes. There is, however, time for him to have some big realizations, and for the change to happen next season.

Japanese Linguistic Observations in Spy x Family - part 4

Part 4 - Furigana and double meanings

I discussed in Part 2 how Japanese is comprised of three different alphabets: hiragana and katakana (together referred to as "kana") which represent pronunciation, and kanji which represent meaning. With there being over 2,000 kanji in common use, as well as various ways to pronounce any one kanji character depending on the word it's in, children learn kanji gradually throughout their school years. So manga and books aimed at a younger audience will typically have kanji "translations." These are comprised of small kana called furigana which are printed to the right of the kanji to show how to pronounce it. In the below panel for example, the one word that has a kanji is the 嬉 in 嬉しい. The furigana shows that 嬉 is pronounced うれ ("ure") to make the adjective "ureshii" (happy).

Sometimes manga authors will use furigana+kanji in creative ways to convey different meanings to words that specifically suit their story/characters. This alternate way of translating kanji is called 当て字 (ateji). One way of using ateji is to help introduce fictional terminology. In SxF for example, Ostania and Westalis are made-up words, but Endo assigns them their own kanji: 東国 for Ostania and 西国 for Westalis. The second kanji for both of them is 国 which means "country," and the first kanji for Ostania is 東 which means "east" while 西 for Westalis means "west." However, to differentiate them from the actual words these kanji represent ("toukoku" and "saikoku," which mean "eastern country" and "western country" respectively), Endo writes out their pronunciations in katakana next to the kanji. You can see this in the panels below.

Even though they're not real words, by assigning them kanji that represent what they are – "east country" and "west country" – even without any context, Japanese readers get more information about these terms than English readers do thanks to the use of kanji and furigana.

Another way manga authors can use ateji to suit their needs is by telling readers to pronounce otherwise normal Japanese words in the "language" they want. For example, the word used for "codename" in SxF is 暗号名, which is a real word that is pronounced "angoumei." However, when we look at the furigana that Endo assigns to it, he specifically tells us to pronounce it like the English word "codename" (コードネーム).

Since SxF is a series that takes place in a fictional version of Europe, Endo must have found it more fitting to use English for specific keywords like this.

While the above examples are fairly common throughout all manga, especially those that have a lot of fictional terminology, Endo also gets creative with using ateji to form double meanings that lend insight into the characters' thoughts/feelings. And we get one of the best examples of this in the very first chapter:

This is the scene where Twilight's saying that he became a spy to create a world where children don't have to cry. The word for children, 子ども, should be pronounced "kodomo," however, the furigana is telling us to pronounce it as じぶん (jibun), which means "self." By creating this double meaning of Twilight saying he'll make a world where children and/or he himself doesn't have to cry, points out in a subtle yet poignant way just how much Twilight's trauma as a child shaped his determination to make sure other children don't have to suffer the same fate. It's a brilliant way of showing a deeper side of the character that he wouldn't outwardly show.

A similar example occurs in chapter 49 during the cruise arc, in the scene where Yor is guarding the room at night, thinking about how she was dragging her feet during the Barnaby fight. Her last thought during that scene is wondering what she's fighting for, however, even though the word used is いばら姫 (ibarahime), which means "Thorn Princess," the furigana tells us to pronounce it as わたし, which is the "I"/"me" pronoun that Yor uses.

The ambiguity of reading the word as "I" or as "Thorn Princess" emphasizes how she's struggling with her Thorn Princess identity at that time. It can almost have a different meaning when reading it one way or the other. For example, reading it as わたしは何のため ("For what reason am I [doing this]…) or as いばら姫は何のため ("For what reason is Thorn Princess [doing this]…) gives the impression that she's trying to distance herself from "Thorn Princess"…that she's unconsciously seeing herself and "Thorn Princess" as different people.

Another example that's not as deep but still interesting is from chapter 87, where Sylvia visits Fiona in the hospital and tells her not to push herself so hard, even for his sake, with "his" referring to Twilight. The kanji used is 黄昏 (tasogare) which means "Twilight," but the furigana translation is あいつ (aitsu) which means "that guy/that person."

This is a clever way to use kanji/furigana to indicate that Sylvia is indeed aware of Fiona's feelings for Twilight by having her not refer to him by name, but also informing the reader that she definitely knows who she's talking about.

I also find it interesting that all three of these examples are spoken from a character we're viewing from behind. I think it's just a coincidence, but still interesting 😅

I'll wrap up with one more example from chapter 58, where Loid notes that his understanding of Bond is lacking, just like Anya. Once again, the word for children, 子ども (kodomo) is used (Loid likes making double meanings with that word, doesn't he?) but the furigana translates it to アーニャ(Anya).

I interpret this as him saying he needs to understand children better, but he specifically means Anya (even though he doesn't want to admit his particular yearning to understand her).

If you're wondering how the anime handles these ateji, it seems to vary. In the anime version of the chapter 1 example, Loid says the correct kanji translation "kodomo," but in the chapter 49 example, Yor says the furigana translation "watashi."

The anime seems to use the reading that would make the most sense if spoken out loud by the character.

I haven't read enough manga in Japanese to say that this use of furigana+kanji to create double meanings is a common thing, but even if it is, I'm sure Endo has his own unique style of doing it. I know there's more examples in SxF that I missed, and unfortunately I don't have the time to look through every chapter to find them. But if you happen to come across any others, feel free to let me know 😃 I may amend this post or create another one if more interesting examples pop up.

regarding your utopian book idea, i've had this idea for a story (in my head it's a tv show but lets be real it's staying in my brain forever) about criminals in a super powered setting going through a restorative justice system, and all the ways that it can be messy as hell.

Like their core belief of "if the worst mass murderer in human history (immortal OC) can take just one step back from the edge, anyone can, over and over again, and we have a duty to help them do it" is *true*, but it is not easy, or even logistically possible in some cases. And human cognition and psychology is so messy and it is human nature to fuck up and there is just. a lot.

anyways just wanted to share i got excited when i saw your post i too. like to think about things.

So many utopian stories I read (and granted, I haven't read a lot, but I've read several) are clearly aiming to imagine a nice and peaceful world, a perfect society one where we believe in restorative justice and all that... but utterly fail to imagine how it would work if it was populated with real human beings, so everyone in the story is incredibly homogeneous and Just Nice. There's no conflict because everybody does the right thing the first time - and if there is any conflict, it's quickly resolved through talking about it and everyone apologizes and makes up within 24 hours. No real differences of opinion exist, and nobody ever does anything actually bad.

It's frequently boring even at the best of times, and at its worst, it does the opposite of the "inspiring hope!" that it intends to do - it makes me cynical. It makes me think, gotcha, you think peace is only possible if everybody has the exact same attitudes and beliefs and personalities and holds no strong opinions because that's the only way to eliminate conflict. That doesn't inspire hope - if anything it inspires despair, because that is not going to happen.

So I would be so interested in a story like this, that takes on the ideals of restorative justice and rehabilitation head-on, that goes, okay, how will this actually work? When people do bad things - and they will - even in a society that raises and educates children to have respect for each other well, that has eliminated structural bigotry, that has eliminated capitalism and poverty, that has a flourishing artistic scene where anyone can express themselves, that has guaranteed food and housing and medical care for everyone with no strings attached, that has the enshrined right and structural support for people (including children) to leave situations they don't want to be in, that has most hard-labor and exploitative jobs replaced by automation - what is the actual response? Even in such a society, some people will still hurt other people. It will happen. There has never been a society on Earth where people didn't hurt other people sometimes. There will be people who want incompatible things. There will be resources that more people want than can have. There will be conflicts that need to be addressed and managed. And obviously writers aren't obligated to solve every world problem perfectly (if it were easy, we'd have done it by now), but attempts at writing utopia that simply go "no there won't!" are both boring and dishonest.

All of that is to say: I would love to watch this hypothetical show, to see a genuine attempt at grappling with such a theme!

If they want to rebuild Loumand trust even for the audience i think they should do it the earliest possible,we can already set aside Loustat because it won't happen before at least after the Akasha plot line,so maybe 2 seasons from now and DM is supposed to be a slow burn.

I'm not trying to re-do the story Loumand is dead,yes but from what I have read here and there Armand is the one saving Louis when he is kidnapped,so he still cares for him they can't skip that part in the future so they have to rebuild their relationship so everything in the future can be believable,right?

I think you’re under some huge misconceptions about the future of Loumand in the books.

For one, Louis and Armand do not “adopt” any kids together. Armand is the one who takes Benji and Sybelle under his wing. Louis is never mentioned as being an active participant in their lives or sharing parental duties with Armand. Louis simply shares the same abode as them and sometimes accompanies them to the theater. Also? Benji is 12-14 years old and Sybelle is 25 years old.

The adoptive children are shared with Lestat — Rose and Viktor — and it’s made clear that Louis is their father figure along with Lestat.

For another, Armand is not the one “saving Louis” when he is kidnapped.

That would be Lestat. Armand is upset when Louis is taken, yes, but Armand also later goes on a rant about how he’s loved Lestat more than any other being — specifically saying he’s loved Lestat more than he ever loved Louis or Marius — but Lestat would not love him back in the way Armand wanted his love, which is exactly why Armand does what he does in Paris.

Louis and Lestat part ways after the events of Merrick for reasons, and Louis lives with Armand at Trinity Gate. Armand keeps NY safe for Louis and Benji and Sybelle. During that time, Louis is coming to terms with himself, and he decides that he’s ready to finally commit to Lestat.

Again, just like Loumand in Paris, even Trinity Gate era Loumand was not a grand romance.

Armand’s redemption comes via Daniel. The books never outright say if Louis and Lestat forgive Armand for his role in Paris. The closest we ever get to that is in Prince Lestat And The Realms Of Atlantis when Lestat is telling Armand that Louis is moving to France with him and mentions the old jealousies and says that after everything they’ve been through together, if they can’t all love each other, then it’s pointless.

So yeah, I warned people of this when it came to how the show was going to portray them, and I admit I’m surprised they went as dark as they did with it, but it’s not like they totally missed the mark with their dynamic, because they really didn’t. I know people are disappointed in the way it was handled, but I’m also not sure what they were expecting when the relationship canonically only ever existed because of Lestat and Armand’s canon obsession with him. It was always a rebound for Louis and a revenge for Armand that morphed into a friendship much later.

As far as the show portraying the Trinity Gate era, I highly doubt that is going to happen. As I said, that era only happened due to the rift between Lestat and Louis over the events of Merrick and since the show has already used what they wanted from that plot and already kickstarted Louis’ self-acceptance to the current era, Louis needing time away and going back to Armand is no longer a factor.

As far as Louis forgiving Armand, that will take time. Seasons and seasons. If even then because, as Jacob said, it was a huge betrayal what Armand did.

The show will in no way, shape, or form be “setting aside” Loustat.

The following post is a little rant about somethings that annoy me a little in the PJO rp scene (some happen in other fandoms too) or that my mind can't wrap around and make it make sense. Its just my opinion and in no form directed to anyone specific or trying to start drama, please don't start drama over silly shit. You've been warned. And i'm sorry in advance for the holy bible of a vent it is lol

✿ Honestly it makes no sense to me the idea that a young teen demigod, would be cabin leader if they don't show major responsibility and leadership skills over an older demigod that is there longer and have more experience. Honestly. And i don't mean that a younger person would not be responsible or could not be a good cabin leader, but they have to fit in the role or at least openly not like to be in it. It just don't make sense someone who basically don't care and it's 15-16 to be apointed leader.

✿ Other thing that bothers me a little is that is hard as fuck to find muses over 17... Like demigods can become adults and still be/stay at camp, honestly I believe this would be quite common for demigods that practically grew up at camp and don't have much experience outside besides missions. Of course I think after they have a serious relationship and plan to have kids that would change but I have a headcannon that someone would start a little village/residential area close to camp, so they can continue living in their comfort zone but with more privacy. Like maybe a place with smaller cabins or a building they'd go home to but once the day starts again, they go back to camp and basically work there.

✿ Also the amount of demigods from the big three. "Hey andy, this is a little hypocritical of you to say. You have demigods of all the big three" yeah, I know. Its just a little weird to see so many and this is just because on my old platform people prefer to keep them to a minimal because of the background of the books and all that.

✿ The last is how sometimes the characters appearance and powers don't seem to match their godly parents. Like, every god have a set of most common skills, traits and powers they pass along to their children, as in, most of their offspring will show them all or a mix of them. While they also have the more rare skills, traits and powers, that are EXCEPTIONS, so a small number of their children will have them. And there are also the things that they don't pass along or are not within their range or being, so it would not make sense that their children would have it. Like for example: poseidon kids will most of the times have green, or blue, eyes and dark hair. Or for Aphrodite's kids that most of the times are either romantic, sensual and/or care a lot about their appearance, also playing with others feelings. These are common traits, of course there are exceptions to every rule, but they should be that... Exceptions. If everyone are different, than are not exceptions anymore. That also includes how some gods don't have children at all for mythology/history reasons, like hera, hebe, artemis and hestia.

Okay those were fandom things that bothered me, but the following are specific roleplay things.

✿ I don't mind at all my partners age as far as interacting go, I don't have a DNI based on age only. But that being said, I wish people would put their age group on their blogs! And I don't mean the exact age, just a "minor" or "adult" or maybe "18+" or "21+" just so I (and others) know how to be respectful and act accordingly. I'll not send adult shit to minors and I would not feel good the other way around too. But it gets hard to do that if I dont know your age. "But andy, you can see the muse age..." Thats not the same! There is minors who have adult muses and adults who have minor muses. Its tricky when it don't need to be.

✿ I feel like a lot of people don't show interest in actually writing or roleplaying, this may be just a personal take, but if you constantly answer with only: "hm", "hi", "good"... Or half a dozen words that don't have any hook or action, thoughts, etc. If feels bad! It feels for me like you don't care or don't want to be there, like I'm the only one trying to write something with a meaning or an idea to keep going. It makes ME feel bad and I then drop the idea of interacting because it feels bad and pointless.

✿ This last point is just something I don't personally understand the appeal but I get that its just personal taste. I don't get the idea of a character blog, like it is still an online blog but as if the person behind it was the character writing on their computer the posts. I personally don't understand it, but thats just about me.

That was it I guess. Again, this is just a rant/vent about things from my end, its not personal or directed towards anyone specifically. Don't start drama! But feel free to comment here about it so we can discuss it, if you want to.

We are talking children here! Children don't really know or understand anything about ptsd and trauma (mostly, yet) they just observe! And if a KID between the age of 5 and 10 observes Magnifico and can read between the lines and conclude he isn't evil, what excuse does that leave for haters calling him one?

Now, more analysing cause you've been loving those and I enjoy doing them 🛡⚔️ (I might repeat some points but in a alightly different way)

Every single arguement I've seen haters or anti-Magnifico people make so far was either straight up stupid, ignorant, uneducated, defiant, baseless and or senseless. And then we also have the hardcore Amaya/Asha fans who just go on hating on Magnifico just "because!"

Or those who go "He's the worst villain ever." Yeah, Sherlock, maybe thats because he isn't one? 🤨 Like, seriously, you take Magnifico, compare him to aaaaall the REAL villains like Jafar, Frollo, Scar etc. And you wanna tell me he was anything like them because his trauma forced him to get himself posessed by evil trapped in an evil book and only went bonkers after he was literally posessed? And his sole motivation was to protect and keep safe at all costs ?

And then come the arguements 🫴🏼

"He's vain and narcissistic!"

Because he acknowledges the fact that he's handsome and like's to see himself in mirrors? 🤨

"He didn't grant every single wish! He shouldn't have kept them."

He didn't grant every single wish because of his trauma caused fear/paranoia and kept them for the same exact reason. However, he always meant well.

Yes, I agree that a traumatized person shouldn't be in any leading position, nor should they be in the position of making important decissions. But lets take a look at his motivations and goals again!

His motivations :

- Never have anyone suffer a fate like he did

- Never have people have to see their hopes and dreams get shattered

- Never have his past repeat

Quote - "Everything I do is to make sure that never happens again!"

His goals :

- Protect and keep people safe

- Make sure people live happy, content, free of hardships and strive

Further comparisons

All the other villains when singing - Sing openly about their evil plans, desires etc. showing they're evil!

Magnifico when bursting into song :

Why did he want to keep his power? - Because he was terrified if he would lose it, he wouldn't be able to protect anymore and his past would repeat.

"He threatened everyone and destroyed wishes!"

Again, he was posessed? Do people understand what posessed means? Amaya knew this book would control him! Not him controling the book!

In the end, I don't even care for people who disagree with me. But one thing I just don't get is : Why are some people so out to prove to us Magnifico-defenders that he's evil? Like, are these guys for real? We push forgiveness and love and the other side pushes hate, ignorance, unforgiveness and bitterness. Why does someone feel the need to spread negativity rather than positivity?

They are a Brave Spirit. Their nickname is "Souls".

They can summon souls to their aid and fight with them. They also can raise the morals of the troops. They see impure hearts of traitors and are a walking lie-detector.

They have girlfriends, which surprisingly are Cia and Lana. Yes, they managed that somehow.

They get flustered very easily but are also a very duty-bound person.

You can say the cheesiest pick up line and they EXPLODE red. As Cia kissed them the first time they got knocked out cold out of embarrassment.

They can't flirt to save their life! But their are the best and most considerate partner someone can wish for.

They are a serious person but have the friendliest smile.

They love to read and love strategy books the most.

Their favourite is lemon cheesecake.

They died at the age of 24. They saved a knight only to be stabbed in the back by him, literally.

But not only Cia and Lana got revenge but them too.

As a Spirit they fulfilled their last order, eliminate every traitor of the knights. And they did, every single one of them was killed by their sword, Cia's rod or Lana's book.

They respected Child!Time and Wind with utmost respect as they were children and fought in war with them. Meeting Time again was a surprise for them, especially the adult version of him. But they still show him the same amount of respect then before.

They are so polite you would think, they are from the royal family!

Warriors would be so confused. They may look like him and went through the same shit as him, but they act SO differently!! They even got together with Lana AND Cia, just what the hell!? But Cia shows her genuine love for them, same with Lana and that's what matters. No woman goes near them, good choice.

The Chain doesn't care.

Legend will say on multiple occasions and every time when Warriors is near, that he likes Reader more and they are the better Wars.

But they are very modest and keep insisting that even they have flaws. The Chain doesn't want to hear it.

Their flaw is that they are a trouble magnet. They went on a barren field with nothing and turned it into a warzone against monsters.

They are able to tell the two Cias apart. (Their's and Warriors' Cia)

They tell the Chain about Corruption and what it does to a spirit.

They also got the task to give the fallen soldiers peace.

How they met.

Legend's PoV:

We walked around Warriors' Hyrule. We travelled around the once battlefield and saw monsters coming our way. We prepared ourselves for a fight but we heard someone behind us.

„Soldiers, Rise and Fight with me!“ We looked back and saw an army of soldiers but they glowed bluish. We saw a person dressed like Warriors with the same shitty scarf. They raised their sword and pointed towards the monsters and it's blades glowed blue like the soldiers. „Attack and let's defend our home and it's people!“

The soldiers ran past and through us! Their captain stepped towards us and smiled friendly at us before looking straight to their men.

„Don't let the monsters break through! Our families and friends count on us to protect them!!“ They shined more brightly before stepping towards us and nodded their head.

„Please go and hide, now it's our turn to defend our home. You just step back and let us knights handle it.“ they sounded calm before marching into the battlefield and participating in the fight. They seem very experienced in battling and swordfight. They barked orders at their men and fought themself against monsters. We wanted to help but Time shook his head and looked at the knights who fought in our stead. After the battle the men stood in front of their captain in a row and I now understood why Time didn't want us to participate, none of the soldiers had seeable eyes only their captain who walked up and down and talked to their army with their hands behind their back.

„Today we may not have killed Ganondorf, but we fought back his armies which try to take over Hyrule! We did a good job today, my men. We should be proud being able to protect our loved ones from any harm. I'm glad being your captain!“ They stopped and looked at their army with their hand on their forehead for a salute and the men followed. We heard the army talk for the first time, except for their warcries.

„Thank you, Captain!“ They looked all so stiff and their Captain talked again.

„You are dismissed!“ they gave their hand down to end the salute and the army followed suit.

„Yes, Captain!“ and with that they disappeared into thin air and the captain turned around and smiled in a polite manner.

„Please be careful. I didn't die, so that others throw their lifes away.“ we jumped away a bit as they said that they died.

„How did you die?“ asked Warriors and they looked solemn to us.

„Got stabbed in the back, literally. Traitors are some pieces of work. And sorry that I startled you, it's probably the first time encountering a spirit with the ability to fight.“ They bowed down and Time began to talk.

„Why did you stop us from fighting? We are very capable if defending ourselves.“

„Good sir, I don't question your ability to defend yourselves, but the fact is that you are mortals and can die. I, a spirit, can not. I had to step down as a captain and knight after my death, but that doesn't mean that I don't try to defend my home. My era is over but I already met the new hero and I'm sure he is capable of protecting our home like I did.“ our all attention was directed towards them.

„What's the name of the hero and your's. Maybe I know you.“ asked Warriors and the questioned person slightly bowed down with their left hand onto their chest.

„You may call me "Souls" that's what the new hero called me and the new Hero hasn't a title yet as he still is traveling to save it, so he mostly is called "Link".“

„Great a hero without a title!“ I blurted out.

„But we could help him on his journey.“ said the Old Man.

„Link, is in good hand and doesn't need any extra help. He has the Legendary Spirits by his side and he knows that he always can summon me if he needs extra help.“

„Legendary Spirits?“

„Yes, of course. The Legendary Spirit of Worlds, of Time, of Wind, of Twilight, of Wild and the Legendary Spirit of Sky. My predecessors are good people even if Time isn't showing it.“

„Wait wait wait wait! Your predecessors!? Who the hell are you!?“ I called out to him and they giggled as they bowed down again the same as before.

„Sorry, I should've introduced me properly. I'm Reader and I'm the Hero of Souls and the Brave Spirit of Souls. I died a long time ago.“

„What happened to the asshole which killed you?“ said Wind and they widen their eyes as they heard his voice even widened even more upon seeing him.

„The Hero of Wind! Long time no see! How is Tetra and your crew?“ they kneeled down and Wind dashed towards them even if he didn't know who this person was.

„They are doing great! And we had so many adventures!“

„That's great to hear, maybe you can tell me someday what happened but right now my time is up.“ They dissolved before us into air but they still ruffled Wind's hair.

„I'm proud of the hero you've become, Hero of Wind.“ with that they were gone.

We all looked at each other, confused. How do they know Wind and why did they dissolve!? We didn't know, they were a spirit on bought time.

And that's how they met. They learned bit by bit, that Reader is from another world and practically Warriors. But they weren't fine with the fact that Reader has not one but two girlfriends! Yandere Chain wasn't happy at all. But they felt satisfied by hearing that Cia put their killer to hell and back and still does to this date. But Yandere Warriors will have the time of his life. Reader gets flustered very easily and even Cia is abusing this fact. So he gets them red all the time when Reader is visible. Wild asks about their favourite and it's recipe. Just to make it when they are participating their dinner. Legend loves to see them read somewhere in peace. It has a calming effect on him to see Reader leaning or sitting somewhere and read about strategies. He even kisses their cheek sometimes so they lose focus and turn bright red. After that he sits beside them and reads with them. He even tells stories about his Hyrule and time. Wind is very clingy about them. They teach him things that he needs to know as an adult and are useful in fights. But they always tell him how proud they are and act like a older sibling seeing his younger brother following their footsteps. Four tries to look at their sword and maintain it but it fells through his hand, but they gladly tell him all about it. But he becames overprotective after hearing about that they can corrupted, because that means Dink can take them away from the group, from Him! Yandere Time kinda basks in their trust and attention he gets from them. Souls respected Time as a child already but as an adult they see him as a superior and follow orders when given. Twilight is near them to protect and save them when Dink tries something. But he uses his accent to get them to blush fairly often. Well, they blush every time when he calls them "Darlin'" that's the whole time. Sky and Hyrule on the other hand love that Reader like to spend time with them. Reader is a calm person and likes to read in peace when free, which isn't often but Sky and Hyrule give them the feeling that they can just put their captain's cap down and be themself. But they listen more to problems then to tell their own and as someone who is in a relationship, they get asked about all sorts of things. Wind asks about how he should get Tetra to like him back, while the others ask about how they get the person they love to notice them. But they are impressed by Reader's resolution for protecting their home, even if they get corrupted in the process and how well they are able to ride a horse even as a ghost.

Also I can really see wars feeling really protective over souls!reader like really, seeing as its also reflects on him how they died. that could have been him. which is going to shake him to his very core.

also the fact that they're a spirit? going to really mess with the yan chain because reader could really leave them at any time. really everything about this reader clashes with a yan chain. they HAVE partners, they aren't bound to the chain, they are already DEAD. it's going to be hell keeping them at their side.

I wonder if the chain could find a way to tie their spirit into a vessel, or someway to prevent the corruption? it might be something that they have to look into so that they don't loose themselves (and if it gives them a way to keep their lover closer then who'll say no?)

Cia and lana are the biggest obstacles for certain though. there's got to be some way to get rid of them right? right??

The fic manacled has me very curious in the I really want to open Pandora box in a morbid way. But at the same time I don't want to read it do to several reasons. Mainly is that I hate Harry being depicted as a irredeemable jerk in fics. Because Harry is one of my favorite characters. Hes my baby, hes what got me to love harry potter and to keep reading it. The second is I can't get into Dramione. I have respect for the shippers and wish I could get into the ship because God do their fandom and works looks so incredible. But I can't get into it because Draco is so very gay to me as a character and Hermione to me would never be interested in Draco romantically to me. Like ever. I'm not a fan of Rominone, but I can't see Dramione working out either. Drarry just hits more for me. It works. They are like soulmates to me. I can picture Harry with someone else but not Draco. At least not completely happy. Like to me Harry is Draco's soulmate.

All I know about this fic I learned against my will, but also have a Drarry friend that told me about it I shall put her message from me telling me all about how bad it is:

I will never indulge in the cursed fandom. Like, Draco is gay. Harry is amazing. Draco is also an amazing character by himself. They are so intertwined with each others lives and there is so much lore and things to build up on and create a beautiful and meaningful story for both. I especially love them healing together but not losing their core personalities and their bickering and how complicated their relationship is. I love it. The only two people who could understand one another in my opinion. Like in a deeper sense + THE INTENSITY OF THEIR FEELINGS. DAAMN.

Sure.

I can't in fact remember when I started liking Snape, it happened as I was growing up with the movies, though I do know that by the time Half-Blood Prince came out in 2009 he was already well established as my favorite character, as I had friends take photos of me near a cardboard cutout of him at the cinema (I was 13 at that time).

So, I can't pinpoint what is the one thing that made me like him. However, I know that I started really loving his character more deeply when I read the books right after seeing the HBP movie. I discovered just how different he was in the books, and how much better his character was.

To answer your question... I love everything about him, including his many flaws.

He's hilarious, he has some of the funniest lines in the series. His sarcasm made me laugh as a young teen, even and probably, specially because it was directed at teenagers of the same age I was.

He's mysterious, for 95% of the series we have no idea what he thinks, what he's doing and why he's doing it. We just know that something is going on, but we don't know what. It makes him intriguing and makes you want to know more.

He's brave, and selfless. He risks his life on a regular basis once Voldemort gets back, he agrees to mercy kill Dumbledore, effectively getting himself branded as the second most hated man in the country and even by people who at minimum respected him (colleagues he'd been working with for 15 years, people who saw him as a friend), and he expects nothing in return. He dies a gruesome and painful death, though thankfully not alone, knowing that everyone who'd ever liked him, that everyone in the whole world, despises his guts because he had to do what no one else could to save thousands of lives.

He's petty, and cruel. I won't teach anyone anything by saying that Snape is a bully as a teacher, and that he enjoys it. Yet, this is also one of the reasons I like him, because it creates an amazing juxtaposition with the previous point. He's a hero... and an asshole who makes children cry. He will do everything in his power and more to ensure that his students are alive and stay that way, but damn if he won't crush their spirit in the meantime as well.

He's skilled. He's a potions genius, who was rewritting recipes as a teen. He invented spells also as a teen, both being things that even Hermione never attempted to do. He thinks outside the box, and he's an excellent duelist, but he relies on his intelligence more than rough power and fighting prowess.

He's traumatised. Snape has one of the worst childhood/backstories of the books. He was abused as a child by his father, grew up watching him abuse his mother, he lived in such extreme poverty that the Weasleys would look like the royal family to him. Then he got to Hogwarts, and we can see how excited he is to finally go somewhere he won't be forced to hide who he is, to be somewhere he belongs... except he meets his future bullies on the train and reality catches up to him fast.

He's "relentlessly bullied" for the next 6 years ish, with no escape. And yes, teenage Snape was no saint, he was no angel, but no child deserves this kind of torment. Every single day we hear of teenagers killing themselves because of bullying. As an adult he shows obvious signs of trauma from what the Marauders did to him, and it's very sad to see.

I need to stop at one point because I don't think you were asking for a whole ass novel about Snape, but there's so so much more to say about him. I'll just link to @said-snape-softly's answer to a post recently that was asking roughly the same thing, where they explain why they love Snape and added a lot of great metas to help you or anyone else better understand his character.

I swear as time passes Philoises become even more stupid. Like how many times do they have to be told that the deleted scene IS NOT GOING TO BE REUSED! He actually respects her and he's a lot more intriguing than Phillip!

Several entertainment articles are reporting on Simone Ashley's heinous treatment from Netflix and Shondaland so the last thing they truly need is for the press to dredge up Ruby Barker's treatment. Yeah so who is going to tell them that CF was only cast as a minor role. In fact he didn't even know if he would even appear in future seasons! Phillip's role on the show was to resolve Marina's involvement with Colin to allow Polin to occur. Also how is Phillip Crane being a fantastic father and husband book accurate? Additionally how do they know that Phillip and Marina weren't intimate with each other? Phillip is shown to be a Regency accurate character as he is dutiful as a baronet instead of going to become a professor of botany letting Marina handle running the estate. Philoise is clearly NOT a guarantee there are no concrete signs he's coming back besides speculative conjecture from the braindead, unhinged Philoises.

Well girlies! Theo isn't married so that's that! Even if he was married so is Phillip! And Eloise doesn't like children so I don't see how the twins will have ANY bearing on their story! I also must remind everyone that ELOISE HATES THE COUNTRYSIDE! I was thinking about Descendants and Cinderella's family.

So many people were like "how can Chad be like that" and if we don't have a canon answer, I will make some hypothesis.

Before talking about Chad, we have to talk about the difference between the young Ella and her present version.

The younger Ella was sassy, she lived a hell of a life at home, and even at school she didn't have many friends. She was lucky to have Bridget as her friend.

The older Ella is calm, in love with her husband, believes that it was just a prank and that Bridget shouldn't have dramatize like that.

I already said in my review how I don't think they really were best friends, so I won't develop it again here, but if your BFF got pranked and humiliated, and that you're just like "relax, it was just a joke", then this is not a best friend behavior.

What I believe happened at that ball:

Ella was grounded, and the young Fairy Godmother bibbidi bobbidi boo her into a beautiful dress so that she can go to the ball.

(Why? Was it part of an exam, to help someone? Was she friend with Ella and it was never show? Did Bridget asked her? She certainly wasn't her godmother)

Because she wasn't supposed to be there, Ella didn't go with Bridget who was left alone in the ballroom. The prince sees Ella, and invites her to dance.

Then, for some reason, Uliana and his crew weren't caught by Merlin and pranked Bridget, making people either laugh or run when seeing her.

Humiliated by Uliana and his crew, and left alone by her only friend, Bridget grew up resentful. And then, when Ella appears in front of her (maybe the day after?) all she had to say was "it was just a prank" and telling how happy her night was.

So not only was she humiliated, but her friend dumped her for some boy she said she didn't like and told her that it was nothing.

Feeling like no one likes her, she closes her heart and decides that it's time to stop living in a world of fantasy where everyone will like you, because it's impossible. So, she decides that of she can't be nice and friend with everyone, she will be a ruthless leader that everyone will be forced to respect. That way, nothing like that can happen again.

My opinion:

No wonder she became like that. I feel like Uliana's prank wouldn't have had that much repercussions, if she had a friend to comfort her. I know some people won't like this, but for me, Cinderella was also the villain.

We know that Uliana was never nice to Bridget, and that people fear her, but Bridget still tries to be friends. Which means that Uliana's prank wouldn't have been the first time she did something. Probably the worst, though. And if her best friend wasn't here for her, it could explain why she turned like that.

Now, about the children:

We saw that Chloe had no idea of what was really her mother's life when she was younger. We see that she doesn't know how to wash the ground, as she wasn't comfortable with that broom in her hands. We saw her touching one item, breaking it, and just saying I'm sorry, believing it would fix everything.

We know that Chloe had good grades, that she volunteered, and that's why she got her new shoes. But as said by the young Ella, it's how she was raised, as a princess. A princess has to be good at school, she has to be nice and help the people who need it.

Chloe did what was expected of her, and she never questioned it.

Now, let's imagine that it's the same for Chad.

(Disclaimer: I didn't read the book Beyond the Isle of the Lost, but I've read a review, and that person was talking about the special chapter with the OG!VKs at Cinderellas Burgh. So don't hesitate to tell me if some elements are incorrect, it's just was I gathered)

From that book, Cinderella and Charming don't know how Chad really is. They believe he's a great person and they don't know about what he did at Auradon Prep (the girls doing his papers, siding with evil Audrey, breaking into Carlos and Jay's room...) but Chloe knows he's not that great.

Let's believe that Cinderella and Charming raised their kids so that they could be great royals. But they obviously forgot to teach them practical competences.

If they expect their children to have great grades, to help people, etc, and that for some reason, Chad had some difficulties. Using his charms, he flirted with girls, who did his papers, and then he got good grades. And his parents were proud of him. Then, after graduation, he decided to become a pro player in Tourney because that was the only thing he was good at. He didn't need someone to play for him, and none of his parents play that sport.

I want to believe that Chad had some pression, that he believed he had to be like that for his parents to be proud. If his younger sister was always that good at school, and that she was rewarded, it could have accentuate that feeling.

When we see him in Descendants 3, taking Audrey's side, we can see that he's scared, that he's nervous, and that he just wants to live. He doesn't want to be asleep like the others, that's why he offers her to be her minion. But he did nothing as a minion, and that's why Audrey locked him up in the cottage. Chad left screaming and running when Mal and Uma found him. He obviously developed claustrophobia (if he wasn't already claustrophobic, we don't know).

And at the end of the movie, Chad welcomed the people from the Isle, so maybe we could assume that it made him rethink his actions.

We know that Chloe is the heir to the throne, and there's no way Chad's parents would have remove it from the succession because they don't know how he behave. So, maybe Chad's high school experience made him rethink of his future, and he decided that he didn't want to become king.

So, what's my point?

I won't say that Cinderella was a bad mother, because it isn't true. But I believe that she was very focused on being a Royal, and that she didn't wanted to be like her stepmother. So she never taught her children anything outside of being nice, and being royal. She didn't taught them how to wipe the floor, how to dust, how to wash their clothe... things like that.

I believe that being with her prince changed Ella. The snarky teenager disappeared, and she did everything to fit in the royal family. It's like if Prudence in Cindrella 2 achieved making her a real princess. And that she stopped to cook, and to sew, and to visit her friends in town.

In conclusion, Cinderella changed as she grew up and maybe it wasn't for the best.

You don't have to ship it, but they do have their similarities—enough that it really isn’t any two white dudes shoved together (unlike one pale elf and another wood elf are). Their personalities, alignments, and histories make them very different people, but some of their goals, struggles, hobbies, motives, requirements, and unpopular moral opinions align in ways that they don't with other origins. I think what similarities they do have are the reason why they butt heads at first, and why Gale later on softens up to Astarion as he becomes more comfortable with himself. They check a lot of the requirements for mirror characters, and it's a ship that's at its best when people hone in on that rather than using it to write out their yaoi punching bag Gale x perfect pained princess Astarion fantasies.

i was debating not answering this because this isn't really something of a debate for me or something that i will change my opinion on.

they share the same levels of surface similarities with everyone else in the roster, if you truly want to put your mind to it.

my point is not "don't ship" or "ship", my point is these sorts of shallow parallels can be drawn between any and all of them. it doesn't translate to them being "made for each other" or "written for each other" or being "narrative foils" or "mirrors".

some of their goals? which ones exactly? getting rid of the tadpole? regaining agency? learning to live the life they feel they lost? again, that's something all of them share.

what struggles? overcoming an oppressive relationship? again, that's something all of them share.

what hobbies do they share? reading? because they share the same reading animation despite ast*rion never talking about books? on the contrary, he even derides reading and books as a waste of time.

what motives? motives for what?

what requirements? consuming something? karlach needs infernal iron in order to survive.

what unpopular moral opinions? about what? in which respect?

it's all so shallow.

people mistake where gale's "unpopular moral opinions" come from in opposition to ast*rion's: in the beginning, they come from pragmatism and being smart enough to recognise that the group is facing a seemingly unwinnable battle against an unknown entity that is controlling an entire army to later finding out it's a legendary elder brain with a macguffin on its head. it's not about hubris nor is it about being unhinged or selfish. it's pragmatism against insourmantable odds and it's selflessness by act iii that makes him offer his sacrifice even if you have convinced him to live. if we are speaking about the crown, the boat scene beats you over the head with it stemming from gale's loss of faith in m*stra and wanting to be better than her in order to help - themselves and others.

they don't check "requirements for mirror characters" in any way that the others do not. i could take any and all of these "mirrors" and apply them to every other companion in the game if that is the level of "depth" we are using.

if we look past the shallow parallels you can draw for basically all of them, we see gale shooting down ast*rion's manipulation tactics right away ("i do enjoy our walks together. don't you, gale?" "uh sure. in silence."). we see their different approaches to what the journey throws at them. gale enjoys helping people, for no gain at all, and diplomatic solutions (arabella, mirkon, mayrina, zevlor, etc.), he needs someone who is on his side, someone who is willing to accept him for who he is. gale is genuinely good-hearted and kind. that is why they butt heads early on. not because they are similar. in opposition to that, ast*rion delights in cruelty. he is so needlessly and often. towards those in need, towards children, towards animals. he is out for no one but himself. he shows little emphathy to anyone, with the exception of himself always ("the problem with what cazador has done is that he did it to me.").

ast*rion in particular is often downright cruel and degrading to people around him, he's cruel and degrading to gale, to the problems he faces and who he is as a person (just a few examples from the top of my head):

from the moment when gale reveals his backstory ("why isn't this netherese jack in a box a blip on the horizon already?") to the mystra reveal (being more focused on what it means re: controlling the cult than gale's impending death), and his casual dismissal of who gale is as a person at every other turn ("i don't care what's in every mind flayer colony, gale - nobody does. except you."), to delighting in the fact gale was kidnapped by orin.

are k*rlach and gale foils because they share a bomb in their chest?

are sh*dowheart and gale foils because they share religious trauma?

are w*ll and gale foils because they share having a relationship with an incredible power imbalance with a female entity?

are h*lsin and gale foils because they both have a library?

are w*ll and gale foils because they have their tents set up next to each other in act i?

to wrap it up: they are completely incompatible to me.

they are "mirrors" or "foils" in the same way that karlach and gale are. or gale and wyll. or gale and shadowheart: at the most there are parallels you can draw that are tenuous at best and shallow at worst. the broad same general narrative structure doesn't create narrative foils.

i've tried to engage with this ship to see what people are doing with it and the relationship usually starts in the same way over and over again in a way that gale's character a disservice.

gale isn't someone who cares about physical attractiveness, nor is he someone who is into one night stands or sleeping with someone for the sake of it while ast*rion's entire romance set up hinges on the fact that you are being manipulated by him, sex and attraction as a springboard.

gale's entire romance set up hinges on the fact that you accept him as he is. it's a slow burn. mystra's missive forces his hand into confessing early and sharing himself with you in what time is left to him - sex is a component of a greater whole.

gale also isn't someone to just take insults or abuse or dismissal and then still run after said someone to have a relationship, he isn't someone where enemies to lovers work or fwb (both things that seem to be quite popular with this particular ship).

i'm not even going to touch on the 'dubcon' aspect i've also seen a lot of forcing 'favours' from gale because he needs magical artefacts because that's a whole different can of worms.

again: this is not a don't ship post. you are free to ship what you want. this is solely a this relationship doesn't work for me, much less as narrative foils, post, and i have seen nothing that would convince me otherwise in the game or from the people who do like this ship.
