★ The halls of the temple were quiet, save for the murmured discussions of warriors preparing for the inevitable battles ahead. You had seen more than a variety of grand colored palaces in Outworld, stood before emperors and queens alike, but here?

★ There was something more unfiltered, raw, humbling…about this place. When Liu Kang himself extended his hand out to you, inviting you to stand alongside him and his chosen warriors , you accepted without hesitation. Duty before all.

★ “As you all may know already, we have a new ally joining us and our cause.” He smiled at you, letting you introduce yourself properly. “They are a formidable warrior from Outworld, and should be treated as such.”

★ He finished. Your sharp gaze swept over the group before you. Johnny Cage, the Earth Realm actor, flashed a cocky, pearly white grin. Kenshi nodded respectfully your way. Raiden, staying composed as ever, smiled kindly toward you.

★ Finally was Kung Lao. His arms were folded, his hat tilted slightly back, and his expression was one of open curiosity…until it morphed into something akin to playfulness.

★  “Oh wow,” he murmured, lips curling upward. “Liu Kang…no warning?” he quipped, earning him a slight head tilt from the God Like being. “I would have fixed my hair beforehand.” Kung Lao finished, making you stiffen. Flirtation? Did he not understand who you were…? Liu Kanf cleared his throat, shooting a glare at the monk. Before he could attempt to come to your defense, you piped in calmly. “You assume I would care.”

★ “Ouch.” Lao clutched his chest dramatically, “A devastating first impression. But do not worry…” he smirked, like he was doing something… “I appreciate a challenge.”

★ You had no right feeling that foriegn warmth creeping up the back of your neck. It was ridiculous. You had faced death countless times before…yet here you were, flustered over some Earth Realm farmer.

★ Days would pass, then weeks…and soon your damn resolve. Kung Lao was relentless. Where others were met with your unwavering, disciplined demeanor, he effortlessly tore through it.

★ During training sessions, he would circle you like a hawk, throwing playful jabs, both verbal and physical. When you were earring, he’d conveniently sit beside you, offering his own food as if testing your patience.

★ By the Elder Gods…he’d even bring this energy to the strategy meetings. And everytime, you felt his gaze lingering on you…the worst part?

★ You liked it.

★ “Alright, alright,” Johnny interrupted one evening as you and Kung Lao exchanged another round of sharp yet…oddly flirtatious banter. “Is it just me, or…is there a lil somethin, somethin, goin’ on between you two?”

★ You nearly choked on your tea. “There is nothing.” Johnny gave you a cocked brow followed by an amused snort. “Uh-huh. Right. And I don’t have a mansion in Beverly Hills.” You looked at Liu Kang-as if he’d have a say, but he simply sipped his tea, hiding his own soft smirk.

★  Raiden looked away, pretending to be more interested with his own cup more than anything else, Kenshi wisely remaining silent. Kung Lao, however, leaned in, voice dropping just enough to make your heart skip a beat,

★ “Nothing, huh?” his fingers brushed against yours as he took your cup, casually sipping from the same spot your lips touched. “Could have fooled me.”

★ Absolutely insufferable…

★ Everything you tried holding together desperately came toppling down over you one cool evening. The breeze was the kind that softened even your furrowed brow. You stood alone in the courtyard, gazing up at the stars, mentally trying to find your sign scattered with the other constellations. And then, of course, he appeared.

★ “Are you always this broody, or is it a custom to Outworld?” Kung Lao teased, coming to stand beside you. You sighed, willing the flutter in your belly away. “I was enjoying the silence.”

★  “You love my company, admit it.” You turned to him, prepared to argue, but whatever retort you had died in your throat. The moonlight was glowing over his features, his usual cocky smirk tempered into something warmer. Something that was less teasing and more genuine. “Mmh, I like seeing you like this.”

★  “Like what?” Your voice was quieter than you wanted, than you had meant for it to be. “Not the warrior. Just…you.” His fingers grazed your wrist, barely there, but the touch sent your heartbeat into a complete frenzy. “And…I think you like being around me more than you’re willing to admit.”

★  Your breath hitched. He was far too close now, the warmth of him seeping into your own aura. You should step back. You mean to step back.

★ But he’s watching you like you were made of sugar and spice and everything nice…and he’s forgotten to breath for a moment. His jaw ticks, then softens. Those brown eyes flick from yours to your mouth, and that alone sent a bolt of heat through your spine.

★ Before you could protest—before he could overthink it, he leaned in and pressed his lips to yours.

★ It wasn’t rough, or anything uncomfortable…but it was desperate…hungry. Like he’s been holding it in for far too long. And he had been, if he were being honest with himself.

★ His lips were warm, a little unsteady, and your pulse was running a marathon as your fingers twitched at your sides. Unsure of what to do.

★ But then, as if all logic went out the window…you gripped his shirt and kissed him back. If only for a second. Just enough to taste what he was so insistent on offering. It was…tempting.

★ His hands ran up and down your sides before settling in your hips, pulling you closer. Flush against him. It made your stomach flip.

★ And then…

★ “No,” you breathe—almost panted out. Pulling back, face flushed and heart riotous at this point. Your hands loosening from the fabric of his shirt, palms flattening on his chest. Steadying him—or perhaps it was yourself. You couldn’t lose composure. Not here. Not now.

★ His eyes widen, and then he takes a clumsy step back—blinking like he’s just woken up from a dream. A wonderful, reoccurring dream. “I-I’m sorry…” he says, rubbing the back of his neck, his own face flushing with yours. “I—I wasn’t thinking. That was…”

★ He trailed off, looking somewhere over your shoulder with a dumb little smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “That was probably not the smartest move.”

★ “Correct.” You quickly said. “Speak of this to absolutely nobody.” You sternly began, glancing around to assure nobody saw that impromptu kiss. “And I’ll consider sneaking you more…lip services.” You looked away, the words slipping before you could stop yourself.

★ And somehow, that dumb smile of his only made it worse—or better. Probably both.
