#they deserve a redemption arc
Note
Wait, so I just thought of something. Since the last episode when KillCode was forced to kill by The Creator ,by the pain and suffering thing, when he was about to have a redemption arc. And the Bloodmoons felt pain whenever they didn’t get blood… DOES THAT MEAN THAT THE BLOODMOONS COULDVE HAD A REDEMPTION?!?! (Or I’m just being stupid and overthinking this too much, lol)
NOT THE MURDER BABIES!
But that does seem plausible as a reason why they were so murder hungry and seemed to mellow out at least a little with Kill Code. They were god knows where in their tiny bloodlust body for like three months or so and the Creator could have very well found them in that time and induced them into killing.

I've been following you for years, and I love your art. Seeing you repost your older art pieces reminded me how much I loved the angry, bitter, miserable Machete art and how it resonated with me... but a part of me is also so happy to see the current art of him being happy. Cute art of him as a unicorn, or chilling in a bathtub with Vasco. Like, we're all growing and healing :')

Reader meeting gojo parents when since they’re confirmed to be alive ☹️
the next time gojo satoru claims to be a “grown man” you’re going to pull his annoyingly soft hair and shove him down a sink drain.
this child, this infant—the very same one who got lost exactly one minute after you told him not to wander off—is going to be the death of you.
you’d always thought that you might go out peacefully, in your sleep or lying in a hospital bed. or, at least, heroically. saving some innocent bystander, leaving the world with some witty last remark.
but no.
instead you’ll die of a heart attack. instead you’re going to look for gojo and accidentally wander into some den of cursed spirits and die before you get the chance to pull on his ear at least one last time.
even tsumiki doesn’t get lost this much—and she gets distracted every time she catches a glimpse of pink in a window.
you walk amongst the crowd, looking for long legs and a stupid blind-fold, thinking about how you should’ve brought megumi. he’s more observant than you are—he’ll look for any chance to get gojo in trouble.
namely, this one.
you sigh, dialing his number again. but you can barely hear it ring as you hold it to your ear, you can barely hear the, “it’s gojo, you must feel sorry that you missed me—“ before you hang up. he’s not going to listen to any short of breath voicemail you leave anyway.
he can teleport home, you suppose. it might be nice to have a couple of hours to yourself, to teach him a lesson for once—
(and no, you won’t miss him. that’s a ridiculous suggestion. why would you miss a third child that clings to you, and whines every time you’re not paying enough attention to him, and whispers sweet things in your ear when he’s bored, and follows you wherever you go, and always trails his hand down the small of your back because he knows—
no, okay? no.)
you’re thinking about how gojo satoru is the worst person you’ve ever met—and you’ve had to sit through meetings with the higher ups, so—when you run into someone.
you get your obliviousness from gojo, thank you.
“i’m sorry, i—“ but you look up and you’re met with the same smile you were just cursing out in your head.
though, maybe not quite the same? it’s usually not so pained and he’s usually sticking his tongue out a little bit—
“baby,” he breathes, chest inflating.
you frown. “i thought i told you to stay by me. i’ve been looking for you for, like, fifteen minutes, are you—“
he turns, just slightly, and usually you would pinch his cheek for trying to deflect but… there’s a woman standing there. looking at you—at him—like she’s seen some sort of ghost.
satoru has that effect, you suppose.
“oh, sorry,” you say, stepping so you wave at her. “did i—am i interrupting?”
“no, we—“
“it’s nothing—“
they both stop. and satoru may be blindfolded, as ridiculous as he is, but you can practically see the glance that they share.
the quick look away, awkwardness floating through the air like dust.
you tilt your head, brows furrowing.
satoru doesn’t necessarily like talking to strangers, but the man doesn’t know what social expectations are. and he’s certainly not awkward.
you wrap your hand around his arm, feeling the release of his technique (and yours), as you consider them. “satoru. who’s this?”
“she’s…” he makes a vague gesture with his hand, trying to telepathically communicate with you, and winces again.
you give him another strange look.
but the woman clears her throat, gesturing to satoru. “i am his mother.”
you still, keeping your eyes on satoru. he doesn’t look back towards you, doesn’t nod to confirm or acknowledge her in any way. his head is tilted up, eyes to the sky.
eventually, you look to the woman.
suddenly you see it, like a flash of light. her eyes are blue, and though not as breathtaking as satoru’s, still light enough to be beautiful.
her hair is a glimmering silver and her entire body is tense.
but she doesn’t look like satoru at all, you think. satoru is always smiling, always moving a million miles a minute. he’s gesturing and trying to make you laugh and he’s never nervous, he’s never caught off guard.
except for maybe now.
some hindrance in your mind thinks about how megumi resembles satoru at times—the model of his smirk or the tease in his eyes. you recall tsumiki’s laugh, the mimicry of sound when she’s laughing with satoru.
it’s not biology, you hear, but connection.
the way you mold each other, the tight grip that admiration has on the very material of your soul.
“oh,” you breathe out finally. but you don’t say anything else to her, can’t think of anything you might want to. you turn to satoru, leaning closer to him, hand gripping his arm. “satoru, do you want to—“
he finally looks forward, towering both of you. “this is my wife,” he interrupts, smoothly. “we were just shopping.”
“it’s lovely to meet you.”
the woman is trying to smile but it doesn’t mean much to you. she keeps glancing at satoru—staring like he’s some public attraction, hesitating like he might bite if provoked.
you pull on his arm a little bit, dragging him a step away. you don’t want to ask in front of her—dont want to take that means of distance away from him—but you don’t have a choice.
“do you want to go?” you whisper to him, wishing you could meet his eyes. “we don’t have to stay.”
his mouth opens, then closes. “i’m not—“ he swallows, stopping.
you’re about to say something—to tell him that he doesn’t owe her anything, that he doesn’t have to be afraid—but she clears her throat again and you turn, ready to say whatever you can to get your satoru back.
the one who’s never left speechless, never left not knowing what to say.
“satoru,” the woman speaks, saying his name like she deserves to. like it’s different when it’s in her mouth—a possession no one else can have. “i have to go—we aren’t supposed to be in the city for very long.”
you frown at her and satoru continues to stare at the side of your head.
“here’s my phone number. i would like—love. i would love to speak with you, if you have the time. whenever you want. if you want.”
she holds her hand out to him and you already know that he’s not going to reach out to her.
you already know that even if he did—she would never get past the world of space between them.
so you reach out instead, grabbing it from her. “thank you.”
“no—thank you. i am…” she pauses, looking away, finally. “i am glad you’ve found happiness, satoru. i… have to go. it was nice seeing you,” she blinks at you, a slight bow as she takes a step back. “and meeting you.”
you don’t say anything but wait, watching for satoru as she walks away from the two of you—keeping him safe for just a moment.
and as soon as she’s gone, you turn to look at him, not sure what to say.
it’s not like with your mom—if satoru understands your childhood at all, you’re completely lost to his.
“you okay, baby?” you ask, staying close to him. maybe it’s a defense mechanism—trying to keep him from shutting you out—or maybe it’s so he knows that you’re there.
“i didn’t think i would ever see her again.”
“did she…” his eyes meet yours, even through the fabric, his mouth a straight line. “did she say anything before i showed up?”
he shakes his head. “no. she just stared at me. i—i didn’t realize who she was, at first.”
“that’s understandable.”
“i don’t know why she would be here.” he looks around, seeming to come to, and then finds you again. “did i get lost?”
you laugh, a bit shocked, pushing your forehead into his chest. “ran away, more like.”
his arms wrap around your back, holding you in place. “sorry. i smelled dessert.”
“of course you did.”
he takes a deep breath, then pulls away. “okay. more shopping? did you check out at the gift shop?”
“are you okay, satoru?”
“i’m fine,” he answers immediately. you stare at him, unblinking, and wait. after a moment, he licks his lip. “okay. yeah. i don’t know.”
“that’s okay.”
three years ago, he wouldn’t have said anything to you. two years ago, he would’ve feigned indifference and hidden himself away for a week.
but you’ve learned to move past these walls, learned how to fill the space and not push too hard.
and you love satoru. too much to let him fall away from you, now.
he sighs after a moment, shaking his head again. “she.. she looks different.”
“it’s been at least ten years, right?”
“yeah.”
you wipe his cheek, adjusting his blindfold for him. “do you want to call her?”
“i don’t—“ he frowns, just minimally. “i don’t know.”
“that’s okay. but you can, you know?”
“would you help me?”
“help you dial her number?”
he grabs your wrist, his cheek quirking. “help me talk to her.”
“hmm…” you tap his nose with a finger. “maybe if you beg.”
“this is why i ran away,” he says, just barely pouting.
and that’s how you know you’ve gotten your satoru back. as annoying as he is.

i love this scene so much, it really shows how much they've grown. izuku can be openly vulnerable and said what was on his mind to him, and katsuki can accept it and attempt to be reassuring. like he's really trying to show that he cares in his own way :(
i don't think he's telling him to suck it up, i think what he meant here was to stop blaming himself for what happened to him. like they've brought him back to UA and showed him that everything that's happened is not his responsibility, so he shouldn't be so hard on himself anymore. they should start looking ahead, because being stuck in past would just endanger himself with shigaraki and afo. but i think katsuki just failed to understand that izuku wasn't only blaming himself, he was afraid to hurt katsuki. that it wasn't about izuku, it was about katsuki and the potential fatal consequence of his mistake with shigafo. it was fear of losing him.
Tumblr media
(nevertheless even if it's not bkdk i still love that izuku has a scene that shows how much the previous events have impacted him.)

Todoroki Rei doesn't feel like an actual character.
Her children do, Shoto does, Dabi does, Natsuo and Fuyumi do.
However, Rei just doesn't. We learn about how Endeavor DROVE her insane with his abuse, caused what she believed was the death of one of her children, made her grievously injure another, and locked her away from all of her children for a decade.
She should HATE the guy.
Yet when Endeavor sends those stupid manipulative flowers - she sings his praises and defends him to Natsuo. Tell me how that makes sense.
People have suggested Stockholm syndrome or manipulative psychiatry as reasoning for her inane Endeavor simping despite everything. Yet if this is the case, it should be portrayed tragically, like Harley Quinn is - not portrayed "admirably" and like she is "so kind" like some members of the fandom have called her.
There's also everything to do with Dabi, and I thought surely this revelation should stir up Rei's hatred. Yet it doesn't.
She gives Endeavor a stern telling off with the rest of her children in tow (which we were all cheering at because this is the bare fucking minimum. ) The Touya backstory hits (in part from Endeavor's POV because he's so reliable as the abuser and the cause of this mess 😒. Why didn't you let Touya tell his own story, Hori!?) It scapegoats her and Touya largely to take a lot of the heat off of Endeavor. And then... she tells Shoto as the hero of the family to save Touya.
Umm...no. Just no.
Endeavor is the hero parent. This should be his responsibility - but it should never be on Shoto to save the brother who wants him dead.
Then, in the epilogue, we find her being Endeavor's carer, staring up at her dying son, Dabi.
Do we see her talk with her son, Dabi? Do we see her cry at his state here? - Nope, it is all focused on Endeavor and his guilt/ self pity.
All she is allowed to do is pose with a solemn expression behind Endeavor's wheelchair and smile cutely at her abuser when the story demands it.
The injustice at the abuse victim - incarcerated mental patient - carer of her abuser pipeline Rei's story has taken is so disgusting.
I am horrified and appalled under Hori, Rei will never be free of her abuser and neither will the rest of the Todofam (Endeavor paid for thier new house after all - he still has the power over it and them as an extension of that. Abusive bastard.)
All I can think of is how horrible it is to handle an abuse narrative in such a way - uncaring of what real people this hurts.
THIS 👆👆👆
Yes, Rei doesn't truly feel like a real character at all because of the way she is depicted.
Even though all of the todoroki backstories come from either shoto, Touya or enji we still can see and notice the horror of rei's abuse. Even with there being almost litte to no focus on rei we can still how she suffered and get a general view to how she was driven to insanity.
So just imagine if horikoshi actually allowed rei to have her own proper perspective and we see HER STORY FROM HER VIEW! @thr0wnawayy (puts some of it into deeper perspective) imagine how gut wrenching it would of been and tell me that she would somehow be okay with being enji's caretaker in the end like he isn't at fault for what happend to Touya (touya's death is literally stated to be her final straw and that she fully broke down after that). Imagine rei a young women who tried to do everything for her children and failed, she ended up hurting them even though she wanted and tried to do what she can to protect them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rei should ultimately despise enji completely heck there is no reason for her to like him or tolerate his existence at all. I wholeheartedly doubt that her relationship with enji can even be good in the slightest and her having Stockholm syndrome or manipulative psychiatry also to me doesn't make sense at all after the guy put her and her children through straight hell. Why is her opinion of enji somehow swayed after flowers? He doesn't do anything except send flowers (and I don't even think he has always done that) it's like she has no one. It's like the narrative is blatantly ignoring fuyumi and natsou who stay with their mother and keep her company. Heck fuyumi and natsou brought their mother clothes but somehow only enji's flowers hold any significance. What about shoto who after everything also started a relationship with his mum?!?!?
Why the actual hell does the narrative frame enji giving rei flowers as somehow more meaningful and symbolic than her children doing the exact same thing and more for her!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How about we talk about how horrible rei's condition must of been if she and the doctor said that she shouldn't see enji even though she hasn't seen the man for a decade?!?!? How about we talk about how Rei literally said that she was scared of seeing enji even though its been 10 years?!?! Why does the narrative seem to ignore this moment and its exactly when this moment is ignored that her making an appearance face to face with enji holding the flowers he gave her in chapter 300 is such an underwhelming scene. I personally felt such mixed emotions with that scene.
This scene and what comes after it all feels weird to me and it fails on so many notes. Rei comes in holding the flowers enji has given her and we are supposed to interpret this as her finally overcoming her fear of enji and stepping up both as a character and parent but it falls apart because
We aren't that emotionally connected to rei (she should of had her individual arc that tied her to the family and allowed us to see her prespective)
We haven't seen the steps that led her to becoming like this
After she doesn't even properly beat or scold enji at all. It all ends up being a pathetic speech where the narrative seems to shun from putting almost majority of the blame on enji and instead she continually says its her fault (the narrative tries to paint it like it's all of her fault when It isn't she is part of the problem but enji never seems to get that much criticism)
Tumblr media
All of these reasons are there to show that Rei doesn't feel like an actual character. She starts and ends the same and even when her son, Dabi ends up in the same position as she starts from she doesn't even speak to him in chapter 426. Actually she tries and all she says is that she has a lot to talk to him about but then enji hogs all the screentime and she stands back separated from the conversation.
Tumblr media
Rei, unlike her family is also not written in a way to fit the families dynamic. Her character isn't logical in a way where she is supposed to hate enji after all he did. Rei also doesn't have role unlike the other members of the todoroki family.
We clearly see that fuyumi wanted a happy family and tried her best to keep up appearances.
Dabi absolutely despised his family after he learnt about his creation but ultimately even as he tried to run away he still has memories of playing with natsou and even when on the verge of death in the 2nd war arc he instinctively calls out to them.
Natsou is like dabi in hating enji and wanting to run away except he follows and accomplishes this in a different path.
Shoto is completely trapped and is supposed to be the saviour child whether that be for enji wanting him to be his masterpiece or for rei putting the title of family hero onto shoto (which she shouldn't of done at all)
Tumblr media
Enji neglected dabi and he is the reason why dabi was made. Rei acknowledges this multiple times that what touya wanted was his father's love and attention and she even goes to blame herself saying that she should of tried harder into convincing enji to talk and spend time with his son (which she already did before but he flat out refused and ignored her)
Tumblr media
After this rei also claims that shoto is the families hero and this puts pressure on shoto to save dabi, his brother who wanted to kill him for being enjis favourite ever though he never asked for it and actually ended up suffering for being enjis favourite.
Yes, shoto reaching out to rei was important for both shoto and her. It symbolised shoto starting to heal and reconnect with his mother whom he cared about so much and for rei it was a new hope for her and a new goal to be a good mum to reconnect with her child. However, shoto isn't the families hero. He doesn't need all of the families problems on him and he for sure doesn't need to solve them all especially when enji was the one to cause them specifically the ones to do with dabi.
Tumblr media
Ultimately I stand by the choice that enji should of died in the first war arc giving more focus to shoto and the rest of the family members.
Enji would die in the line of duty so you would probably have a lot of people try and excuse his behaviour and this would be a good way to explore how this negatively effects the todoroki family and dabi who grows to have even more resentment and has to learn that shoto's life was full of suffering under being enji's favourite.
Rei should of had an arc that tied her into the jaku hospital arc where she learns about touya and stands up to enji at the same time while coming face to face with a lot of the new information and maybe even learning about genten himura her distant cousin. There is so much that could be done with rei and all we got in Canon was a horrible non existent arc where she is used to prop up her abuser!
In the end enji doesn't face consequences for his actions (being disabled isn't a consequence) and his whole dance in hell with dabi ain't even effective because enji hasn't experienced true hell (not to the extent of dabi). In the end enji still has people and he still has money his hell can be paradise for some people like the villains.

I will never understand ppl who hate/anti ANY of the members of the Gaang, or even any of the other kids. coz they are just kids. in the middle of a fucking war. of course they're gonna fuck up and make mistakes and be little shits, THEY ARE 12-16 !! ALL OF THE GAANG (including Zuko but excluding Suki) HAVEN'T HAD PROPER SOCIALISATION WITH OTHER KIDS THEIR AGE UNTIL THEY MET EACH OTHER !!
and yes, you could argue that Katara and Sokka had each other, but that's siblings and siblings are not the same as friends, and also Sokka was the only teen boy left in the tribe and I think Katara was the only teen girl too (might be wrong there tho)
you could also argue that Aang had friends before he got stuck in the iceberg so he did actually have that socialisation, but bro is fucking 12 and he was stuck in an iceberg for a hundred fucking years and had the whole avatar thing weighing down on his shoulders, cut the boy some slack ???
Toph and Zuko were both Rich Noble Kids™ so they automatically did not get proper socialisation with other kids their age. Toph was sheltered from the outside world because she's blind and a young girl, but yes she did go to that underground boxing ring but that was mainly adults, I highly doubt she was hanging about with kids there and definitely not in normal circumstances.
And although Mai and Ty Lee were there, they were Azula's "companions" (not originally meant to be friends but may have ended up as so after the war) and they weren't there for Zuko, they were there for Azula only. I'm pretty sure Zuko spent most of his time with tutors or with his mother before she left, he didn't get any socialisation with normal kids and he definitely did not get a normal childhood.
None of them got a normal childhood, so can you really blame any of them for being manipulative or assholes or doing dumb shit, whilst still being a kid/teen !!! and then being bad parents too, when they literally have no good role model to go off of (love Hakoda but bro was not there for his kids for a good couple of years and that does a lot to a kid)
edit: also Azula deserved a redemption/healing arc because she was a victim of abuse as much as Zuko was. she was in fact just a child, as much as the rest of them were, and deserved better. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk 🙏
edit 2: Jet also deserved a chance at healing. like bro watched his village burn and was the sole survivor, he probably has mega survivor's guilt that isn't touched upon in the show, like his hate for the fire nation is pretty rational and his actions (to an extent) are justified. all I'm saying is that if he had anybody else in his corner, that wasn't more angsty, out-for-revenge teens or kids, he could have had a much nicer life. one that didn't lead him to his downfall.

The whole idea of the “redemption arc” has become such a charged and specific phrase in fandom spaces for no reason to the point that like it doesn’t even really mean anything as a concept anymore. like once you get into conversations about who “deserves” a “redemption arc” I’m automatically like oh we are entering a territory of internet discourse I don’t give a shit about and also you are probably talking about cartoons for 12 year olds
