1. He had no fuckin idea it was gonna do that. Up until this point he'd only seen it revive plants kinda badly

i don’t think we talk enough about how horrified thorin was that he would fall to gold sickness like his grandfather. (this is going to reference the extended editions of the movies specifically as i have not yet finished the book!)

we see him watching Thror. he’s witnessed firsthand as his grandfather, whom he was very close with, falls to addiction and madness because of the wealth he’s accumulated.

we see him searching for his father, saying that he knows he’s alive. i could honestly go on a whole other tangent about this, but for the sake of this rant, he wants to believe that his father didn’t actually go mad like everyone says he did. or if he has gone mad, he wants to believe he can help him.

there’s the scene in Rivendell where he overhears Lord Elrond and Gandalf talking about it, and i don’t know about you guys, but he looks pretty damn worried to me. (sorry for how crunchy this gif is but you get the point)

and of course there’s obviously the “I am not my grandfather.” line he says to Balin outside of Erebor, which is one of the lines that ends up snapping him out of the dragon/gold sickness. His voice is stern, but he also looks away from Balin and almost whispers the line (see below).

all of this only exaggerates the tragedy of when he falls to the sickness. not only do we see how it effects those around him, but when he starts to recognize what’s happened to him he imagines being swallowed up by the gold. when he snaps out of it (might i add, to the repeated line “I am not my grandfather”), it’s such an intense realization that he throws his crown. he’s not only betrayed the others by falling to this sickness, he’s betrayed himself.

speaking of the herbivore/carnivore thing, do you think it's like... "racist"(???) if leona calls an herbivore-beastman that? like a rabbit-beastman, or something?

Mmmm… Personally, I don’t think so?? We’ve already seen Leona call Fellow an “omnivore” (which is technically true of foxes) based on his opportunistic behavior. Leona isn’t calling people omnivores, herbivores, or carnivores based on what they specifically are, but based on his own perception of their actions and strength. He calls many non-herbivores “herbivores” anyway because he thinks they’re weak/below him in the food chain. He’s not actively discriminating against herbivore beastmen by calling them and only them “herbivores” or implying that herbivore beastmen specifically are meek or powerless.

Herbivore beastmen might not even technically be herbivores. After all, Leona is a lion (carnivore) beastman, and he is still capable of eating vegetables—he just dislikes them. By that logic, I’m fairly certain that rabbit beastmen could eat meat too. We have to remember that beastmen aren’t entirely defined by the animal they share genes with; they are basically humans with some animal features—and humans are omnivores.

I’d like to add that there hasn’t been any in-universe indication that the terms Leona uses are somehow offensive to a certain group, unlike Sebek using “human” or the outdated terms for mages (“witch”/“wizard”). Yes, Leona typically uses “herbivore” in a derogatory way, but it has always implied a power disparity, not a racial disparity.

I also feel like it just doesn’t fit Leona’s character to say something like that if it was considered racist. Yeah, he’s generally rude and talks down to others—but he’s tactful enough to know what’s going too far, and he can tell right from wrong (even if he decides to still act on dubious morals). There’s also a big difference between acting out to rebel against the expectations of royalty and actively making your country look bad + giving your people more reasons to hate you because you’re apparently racist too 💀
