Are YOU willing to up and leave back to Europe? I know your demographics, you can definitely afford it, you have no excuse to stay in north America where you're a foreigner.

Yep, all critically endangered or extinct, California used to be a hub of diversity, containing dozens of distinct language families, which means this diversity has persisted for thousands to tens of thousands of years before being absolutely decimated just so that you could all speak English there, how bout that eh?

Hey Oregonians, Washingtonians, and British Columbians, are you familiar with the rich textile culture of the peoples that used to live in your lands? They had a whole dog breed that grew wool they expertly crafted fabrics out of, are you familiar with them at all?

Hey Southwesterners, are you familiar with the Pueblos and their masonry traditions? Anything beyond their famous cliff dwellings? Do you even know how significant such house building practices are when thinking about the technological advancement of cultures, and where they would've gotten if their civilization wasn't destroyed?

Hey Midwesterners, are you familiar with the old copper complex of your area? The artisanal metal castings made by the natives? Some of the best use of metals in the entire western hemisphere!

Hey anyone between the Midwest and the gulf of Mexico, are you familiar with the Mississippian culture? Their cities? The most complex settlements north of of the Rio Grande! An absolutely marvelous civilization, comparable to many of the most notable archeological complexes we love studying in the old world!

Hey eastern Canadians, do you know about the Iroquois confederacy? You'd think something called that in the very same land you live in would be a notable aspect of its history! What about it?

Hey Americans and Canadians on the east coast, do you know anything about the people who used to live there? As the first victims of colonization in the United states and Canada, some of them died off so early we barely know anything about them! Wild!

Do any of you fucking know how much was destroyed for your countries to exist, countries whose existences you perpetuate by living there and barely trying to do anything meaningful relating to the natives? All of 'em wild n' free horse savages you imagine when you think about the natives? Not what was there originally, not for all of it anyway. That was the post apocalyptic world of an entire continent decimated by disease brought on by European. Ripe and ready for the taking I guess!

It's so obvious how little of a shit you all actually give about the natives when we take a look at what you actually do for them, 99.9% of you would rather spout hate about Columbus as your token contribution to the native communities. What about donating money? They surely could use some of it to fund their insanely poor education funds! What about petitioning to turn some reservations into states? Surely the Navajo-Hopi one at least is big enough to qualify, Right? How about learning an indigenous language and contributing to its literary and educational body of texts? I know that's not an out-of-left-field suggestion, because people tell us that we should've assimilated to the Palestinians when coming here! It's the least you could do.

20% of Israel's population is Palestinian Arab, and that's not including the west bank and Gaza. Not to mention other groups either. And those Israeli Arabs speak their native language freely, and get an education in it, and they have their own schools in Arabic (not segregated! If an Arab wants to enroll their child in a Jewish Hebrew speaking school, they can). Their culture is intact and lively, meanwhile your native cultures are a pathetic shadow of their former selves, a shriveled up remnant of once great civilizations, and none of it is their fault! Makes anyone with even a shred of knowledge about anthropology curl over and cry. And that's not to mention that you came there as colonizers with nothing to do with the land, for the opportunities to steal and exploit, meanwhile Israeli Jews have a well established and proven genetic, linguistic, and cultural basis for being there, they came there as fucking genocide refugees (not just the holocaust), and Palestinian culture has actually influenced Israeli culture substantially! Can you say the same for your state?

And the thing is, I don't even hold most of it against you! To put it quite bluntly - I am better than you for it! I know better than to tell people who have lived somewhere for generations and built a life for themselves to just up and fuck off to somewhere else. I don't want you to vacate north America, but if you want us to do the same, you're delusional and this should precisely demonstrate why. You could, however, put even the slightest bit of effort into raising up their cultures and languages and giving them autonomy and self determination, would freeing up at least one state be possible?

Anyway, if you think Israel is at all comparable to your countries you're a pathetic excuse for an academic or activist, and if you think Israel is worse in any capacity, and therefore needs to do things that you otherwise don't, you've frankly got to be clinically insane.

And here's the kicker, you do realize you picked quite possibly the dumbest strip of land on the entire planet to say that about, right? It's not some pristine isolated culture like the damn Greenlandics or aboriginal Australians, it's one of the single most diverse places in the world prior to the age of European exploration. Everyone has been here, Persians Greeks Assyrians Egyptians Romans Arabs Ottomans yada yada sure, but going way beyond actual imperialism being the famous holy land™ it has attracted inhabitants and visitors from all quarters of the known world, and it shows in the ancestry of Palestinians themselves and the demographic makeup of the cities. To have the audacity to say certain groups of people "don't belong here" (let alone the fucking JEWS) has got to be one of the dumbest things one can even dream of doing when concerning themselves with actual society-collapsing colonialism.

People can’t tell if they’re rich or not. They have a very large house filled with technology, and are all obviously very intelligent, but their house seems constantly overtaken by rot and vermin and is even crumbling in some places? They don’t seem to mind so fans pretend it isn’t there

Father has a podcast. This is...interesting, as he becomes especially popular with divorced men, but also some of the younger generations think he’s funny because his dad energy is evident. Definitely calls himself the grill master or something corny

Otak and his brother Loid are the family’s housekeeper/utilities guy/family friend and a fan favorite. Two of the most "normal" people featured on the channel

The favorite family member isn’t even related to them by blood. It’s some guy (gender neutral) named Tenno (nicknamed Ayatan) who is the only guest star to date to not attempt to punch Son’s lights in

They all call each other by their family title, and fans don’t know if its either a running bit, they hate each other so much that they refuse to call each other by their name, or the chemicals they’re constantly using in videos has finally got to them. (It's actually a disease so rare they are some of the only currently documented cases, and it's known to mess with memory)

Daughter has a fishing channel. People would use her videos as studying background noise until she started butchering fish on-camera. A lot of her videos get taken down for excessive violence and PETA absolutely HATES her ass. However, swamp and large aquatic animal hunters SWEAR by her DIY bait videos

Son becomes an influencer. This is bad for everyone because he’s constantly doing callouts that are always obvious at who they’re targeted at. He’s especially popular with the queer community because there’s no way someone that bitchy isn’t bisexual and his cadence of speaking is basically textbook gay lisp. Posts shit like “GRWM and storytime: how a family member COLLARED ME over an INCONSEQUENTIAL MISTAKE”

Mother has an educational channel. She’s extremely good at teaching but has also traumatized generations of “her children” (middle school to phD students) when she reads their comments or takes fan calls. Grandmother is a popular recurring guest and KNOWS it. Constantly reads her family to filth and comments under posts by her family with "Grand MOTHER 💜"

So many fans and other youtubers have entire multiple hours long video essays dedicated to them to figure out what the hell is going on. Anytime the family guests on another channel or podcast the mystery gets deeper and deeper. Is it black mold? Genetics? Sheer human hatred? Who knows!

I think Riddler thinks Very Little of sex and more so thinks of the concept of human connection. It's very much up for debate whether or not Dano Riddler is autistic, I tend to lean towards it, and as an autistic person myself I sort of project a bit onto him in this regard lmao BUT I PROMISE it tracks. I think sex is *part* of good bonds with your partner, but in general it means very little to me and if I *had* to go my entire life without it, I probably would if it meant my life was more Simple. I feel like, given he never gets given a random love interest in any of the other media he's been in (Before the Batman and TRYO), it seems like something that's just - so inconsequential to him given all of his other issues and problems that he chooses not to even think about it, whereas incels think about sex CONSTANTLY. I think Edward's mind, as we see from his ledgers, his recordings, his internal monologue - it's himself. He's ALWAYS just thinking inwards, constantly on some silent mental mission to solve himself, and I don't feel like that leaves him much room for bemoaning the fact no one's ever done tricks on it. as short of a scene as it was, this was really nicely shot imo. and the tears in eddie’s eyes when he spoke like RYAN GUZMAN UR SO GOOD. but also how does buck (best friend) rank about girlfriend like hmmmmmmm

section 3: FUCKING ABBY

I CLOCKED IT I KNEW IT i know we always joke about 911 having continuity issues but THIS was such a good way to call back season 1 like insane writing tim minear and i love u for it

section 4: the divorce call

i wish they did more with this call like there was potential to call back to eddie/shannon but they didn’t. other than that i think honestly this is one of the grossest calls they’ve ever been on like genuinely icked the hell out of me with the guts like ugh gross

section 5: josh’s speech

as much as people hate on tommy, i do think josh’s explanation of things does give some sort of context to the way tommy acted in the past. like yeah racism and sexism is bad don’t get me wrong, but tommy did make an effort to change. it’s just that with society and his own work place back then, tommy prob had a lot of internalised homophobia that he expressed negatively outward to others (chim and hen in particular). but josh made a very good point with his speech about pre glee and post glee world (great reference, 10/10) and i think this was one of my favourite parts of this episode

section 6: confession part 2

ok first of all there was literally NO NEED to add that “im straight” “im celibate” part. like that was intentionally written into the script for something bcos that entire section could have been done without the sexuality mention. tim minear i see you. other than that FATHER BRIAN YOU ARE SPEAKING FACTS. my fav line he said was “but we can’t take care of others if we don’t first take care of ourselves”. bcos this is true!! and also a line used in therapy a lot cough. anyway i think the conversation eddie had with the priest was like a wake up call to eddie to start getting his head out of his ass and start working towards something. love this scene 10/10

section 7: brothers and pipes

most of this call was focused on the brothers part more than the well scene call back, tho there was a throw away line from bobby to eddie about how (eddie) wouldn’t fit this time. i do wonder if this happened irl would fire departments legally be authorised to allow children to help with rescues tho. otherwise honestly this was a very cute scene that helped chim get some introspection. i do wish there was more of a well scene call back tho :(

section 8: buck tommy breakup

as a buddie fan, i am overjoyed. but as a buck fan, i am devastated. tommy is actually one of my favourite love interests for buck, and its not just because he’s a dude and sexual awakening all that. i genuinely do think buck and tommy could have had a lot of potential if the show had decided to go through with it, but at the same time ending it here was also a relatively good note. i think in this relationship it wasn’t actually buck who wasn’t ready, it was tommy. tommy is afraid of things not working out in the long run bcos he doesn’t believe in buck’s affection for him being long term. this whole breakup was bcos tommy wasn’t ready imo. i do see the point tommy was trying to make but i also think it was a bit of a dick move to do the whole breakup immediately after buck asked tommy to move in with him. like the timing could have been better tommy. tommy being the one who decided to end things did surprise me tho. but now i feel really sad for buck bcos buck did like tommy a lot, and also as a queer person your first queer relationship is always going to mean a lot to you

section 9: MADNEY MADNEY MADNEY

HOLY MOTHER OF- i didn’t see this coming i didn’t but i am so here for it. the amount of trust and communication between chim and maddie is literal relationship GOALS like they lay out the boundaries and have healthy discussions about having another kid and it’s just so UGHHHH I LOVE YOU also maddie already being pregnant FJSJCKSK MORE BABIES

section 10: eddie, the moustache, and the dance

this. was. everything. the significance of shaving off the moustache. the dancing at the end?? no pants too was a choice. like when eddie flops back onto the couch and you see his smile, it’s like you truly see him deciding to finally forgive himself. maybe not completely, because there’s always going to be some guilt he carries around, but he’s moving forward and i’m so, so happy for him. it’s just a fun goofy feel good scene and i love love love this.

special mention: buddie and the couch

i actually think this is the first time both of them are on the couch together. like sitting next to each other with no one else. RETURN OF THE COUCH THEORY WELCOME BACK. ok but the ending scene?? the way they don’t even need words to communicate like- buck not even bothering to question why eddie doesn’t have pants, and eddie not even questioning why buck is here with beer in the first place. the level of mutual understanding has my HEART IN PIECES

overall this is honestly my fav ep this season and one of my fav eps of all time. i can’t wait to see how the story moves on from here ahhhhhhh

oh my guy I have so many crumbs for you. These guys have resided in the back of my brain forever but I was usually too embarrassed to say anything about it outside of a couple joke posts. But this is my house so I’m choosing to thrive and frolic.

Also a doodle of the aforementioned three before I enter my tangent :) rambling under the cut

the initial dynamic of these three goes something like

-Lili & Bobby - can’t stand his fake ass. She remembers having to deal with him at whispering rock and clearly is not very good at letting go of grudges from when she was ten. This is, in fact, Bobby’s worst nightmare. He was terrified of working for the psychonauts partially because he didn’t want to run into people he used to know. Surprise! They don’t like each other.

-Raz & Bobby. Raz has the complete opposite problem he literally barely remembers this guy. They interacted for maybe a collective hour one day when he was 10 years old, he only recalls him because Lili clocks him and reminds Raz. Bobby mostly hadn’t thought about him since camp, but did build a little (lot) bit of a resentment after seeing that weird little freak from camp pop up on different True Psychic Tales covers. That on top of Bobby now having to intern under this guy makes their relationship kind of spotty to start, for sure.

-Raz & Lili. Theyre having fun :) After having fun “dating” as real young kids they fall out of touch during their teen years when Raz goes to travel with then circus again to try and reconnect with his family (whole other can of worms for him.) They meet back up during the late teen years and sort of pick up right where they left off, dating off and on for a bit and “officially” dating long term for a little over a year now.

Both their relationships with Bobby evolve over time, naturally. Bobby and Raz have a whooole fucking thing that isn’t fully conceptualized and Is way too long a concept for me to share but their intern/mentor relationship does help them learn to get along with each other. And of course them getting along means Lili having to deal with being around Bobby more often and so it begins.

The whole ~ feelings ~ aspect mostly starts with her and Bobby I think, funnily enough. They hate each other, they want each other dead so bad, but eventually they have to learn to get along for Raz’s sake if nothing else. So they learn! Try to, at least. They’re both really bad at it.

but the “i hate you i want you dead” manages to evolve into that more friendly insulting banter some people have. “I hate you i want you dead” (complimentary.) It gives Raz a headache because it takes him a while to process that they’re usually joking when they’re arguing with each other now.

Lili doesn’t like when she starts to have Feelings about that shitty little freak (tm.) I think she’s somewhere on the Aro spectrum and when Raz wasn’t around she really never. Felt any sort of desire for romance with anyone else. Girl just kind of forgot about it for a bit until he showed up again. Which caused a lot of emotions. And then got used to that until Bobby is introduced into the equation and slowly she starts to feel things toward him that aren’t Rage and Disgust. Which causes a lot of emotions.

Raz I think is entirely oblivious of having any feelings toward him for the longest time. While Lili is a slow “oh god oh fuck” buildup, he’s just really happy he and Bobby are getting along at all that any sort of progress in affection toward him just feels like another big win for friendship. I think it hits him all at once late at night on a random Tuesday and he just sits up in bed and stares at a wall about it.

The whole Raz and Lili communicating abt the concept of polyamory would make this insane post already twice as long and it’s not a part of it all I’ve thought about anyways so we’re going to shelve it for now. But once they do reach the conclusion that they saw this guy from across the bar and they liked his vibe, they both proceed to trip over their own feet for the next however many weeks.

You see, “woman who does not process her emotions” and “guy who needs a twelve step plan for everything” is a prime combination for two people who are pulling some mad scientist shit to try and talk to this guy rather than just inviting him out to eat sometimes. And Bobby is convinced for a little bit that they’re planning to dissect his brain or something because they keep doing that ^

On Bobby’s side of this whole equation the evolution is just his own little torment nexus for a few months.

he initially discovers he’s got a thing for Lili after they start getting along more and it sucks for him. He enjoys their flirty little threats of violence but he’s also close with Raz at this point so I think it just kind of makes him feel . Gross . Like man am I flirting with my friend’s girlfriend I think I am. Oh he’s probably going to hate me. Help.

and that concern for Raz is also a guy in the back of his brain knocking on a door very loudly trying to tell him he’s bisexual but he’s not quite arrived at that conclusion. Give him a few more missions where Raz grabs him while he’s falling to his death and he’ll get there probably.

there’s so many words. These are so many words. I’ll be honest the wacky schenanigans of the “before relationship” era are so funny to me that I’ve not really had any conceptual ideas for them getting into + Being In a Relationship yet. Man, the Marineford arc just....hits different. Like, yes for obvious reasons which I don't want to spoil in this post, but also just the entire tonal shift in the broader universe of One Piece. Up until this point, One Piece certainly hasn't shied away from darker themes or from pulling on our heart strings in profound ways. Just about everyone's back-story is heartbreaking and disturbing (Nami and Robin's, for me in particular) but this is where the story goes from pure fantasy into something more....real.

I highlighted this scene in particular with Coby who acts as a compassionate moral compass in a field of bloodshed and all out war. Up until this arc, One Piece had something of a reputation for not actually killing off characters, even minor ones. In this arc, there are very real and devastating consequences when people engage in violence. Families are being ripped apart. People are being actively traumatized. Coby's panic attack was so fucking real here. You see people go from wanting to fight for something in the name of justice into pure bloodlust. People are murdered at point blank range, and the cycle of violence just escalates and escalates until Coby's screams for a ceasefire are actually heard. This is like Alabasta on steroids.

Also, just...the timing of me watching this now with everything going on across the world. Where communications are being cut in real life, as atrocities and actual genocide are being perpetrated. Where propaganda is being spewed and the masses are being manipulated. Stories of war are, unfortunately, almost always topical, but watching this now feels so important and relevant.

It's a testament to Oda's storytelling and world-building that he can take us through such a vast array of different emotions. The character arcs in this show are insane. I had to spend a solid twenty minutes just....breathing after this arc. If y'all are thinking about getting into this show for real, prepare yourselves for some big, BIG feelings.

OCtober 2024 day 23: community

A yapping essay under the cut, I will talk science so you have been warned.

Now before I ramble about science I'm just gonna talk about the art for a bit. I did use a reference for this because I'm not insane and drawing the lineart with it was ... alright I would say. I actually looked through my own pictures and my uni website first in case I could find something as a ref but no dice so I needed to look it up anyways. I think the most difficult lineart to draw was the fucking pipettes... I need everyone to know that all the lab equipment (except maybe the blue regant holder) is a simplification of what it actually looks like because by god I could not replicate the real thing with my current skill set. I know most people will not give a fuck but I do so it needed to be said.

Otherwise colouring went okay and rendering wasn't extremely tedious. I noticed that I actually really like rendering blond hair, years ago I found this hack where you use red for the shadows and turn the opacity down and it works so well every time, I'm a bit obsessed tbh. I need to give more of my OCs blond hair lmao.

Okay enough about art let's talk science! Honestly this is really just me explaining science stuff, so feel free to skip because this can get long.

As I mentioned above I drew Anemone doing qPCR and I chose qPCR because her focus is genetic research. So basically she looks into the human genome (entire set of human genes) to see how it correlates to the Pallid Flame.

qPCR stands for quantitative polymerase chain reaction or real time polymerase chain reaction (RTpcr) and it's a valuable tool for analysing stuff down to genetic aka DNA level. You might have learnt about PCR in school but if not or if you've forgotten: PCR is the amplification of a specific gene aka you take one specific part of someone's DNA and replicate it a bunch of times. This is useful if you want to proof if a specific gene is present in the DNA you are analysing. Now qPCR also does the DNA amplification but as it already implies with the name it also counts how much the gene was amplified. You can use qPCR in many applications for example I used this method in my thesis to test if skin related genes are upregulated (higher gene expression aka genes are more activated? <- me trying to simplify genetics I'm not sure if this is the correct term of phrase) or down regulated (lower gene expression) when I put mast cells in my skin models. It gives you insight how certain factors affect cells on DNA level and since it will give you number at the end you can do statistics which is what everyone will really care about. I hope this explanation was at least somehow understandable if anyone has any questions I can talk more about this no prob 🫡

In fact I will talk more about it just... less why you do qPCR but more on how you do it. Because the thing is with this method... You need to pipette, you need to pipette A LOT. And honestly I'm really not a fan because you need to be so exact with this pipetting since each mistake you make stacks up and shows in your data at the end. It's very frustrating especially because there are a lot of steps where you can make mistakes and you need to be fully concentrated the entire time. I... I would say I'm good at my job but I really don't like this part of it because it grates on my nerves. But I think Anemone would be good at it, it's something repetitive that requires a steady hand and patience. Normally post Docs and even some PhD students let assisstants handle this job but I'd like to imagine that Anemone likes doing small things occasionally. Maybe not the entire process (there's a lot of prep work required for qPCR) but the last few steps she can take over, just for a change of pace.

Like, I'm not vision-impaired so I could be out of line in this, but acting like Brightheart's skills are somehow "lesser" and only good for training other "lesser" blind cats is just. Insane. Barring the fact that disabled people are ABSOLUTELY capable people, even if Brightheart's disability would prevent her from being a mentor in real life, it's a fictional series. It's the same thing when I see people saying they don't like Briarlight because her surviving as long as she did was "unrealistic" for cats living in the wild. First of all, Briar was doing just fine, but the existence of Medicine Cats essentially gives the Clans vet care. Not to mention the Clans are a community, and communities are supposed to take care of each other, which they do. But also even if all of this was untrue in real life, did you forget that this book series has cats with superpowers? Organized religion and social structures? An entire arc where they literally battle with HELL?? If your line for accuracy is drawn at a disabled cat mentoring a nondisabled cat or a paralyzed cat living for years after her accident because she's getting the care she needed, then you need to re evaluate why you have problems with this.

I don't know if this is coherent, and if I've said anything out of line or rude please let me know, but the treatment of cats with disabilities just bothers me so much and I needed to say it.

Dude so many people have joked about this now both in his chat, in my friend servers and on here LMAO.

There's no way he is imo. Cause like. Yeah he has a Tumblr, but he and Kristin (usually Kristin) only look at the fanart. And I think they only use the fanart tag, which my fic isn't in.

And that's like, as of 3 years ago at this point. Nowadays who knows if they look at Tumblr at all. Given the recent Tumblr vs Tubbo drama and Phil being made aware of it at one point, I don't think he's looking here at all present day.

He also had no idea the fic existed before the last stream when I lovingly yelled at him on TTS about a) plotting chapters 7-12 in greater detail and obsessing over it and b) jokingly telling him to stop coincidentally following chapter 1 to the letter. That and generally speaking, he semi-purposely doesn't look into things he's told about on TTS. Case in point: song recommendations.

But it's still WILD that last stream was so close to chapter 1. Like. Here's the things I completely by chance predicted:

LIKE. I WAS SCREAMING ALL STREAM LONG. And at least 10 chatters asked me to whisper them the link to AMFMN since I kept having a stroke about it in chat.

But realistically, Phil nor Kristin are in the places where AMFMN is being posted (here and ao3). And to our knowledge, they haven't read fanfics from the community in years.

Though, I am acutely aware of how there are at least 2 iconic crows I can think of that are VIP in his chat and/or well-known in the community for their fanworks, one of which is a fic writer. So like. The chances he'll read/has read AMFMN are extremely low but not zero.

Which terrifies me. Especially given the fact that AMFMN has an animatic from @offscot now that's gonna be posted when I post Chapter 2 later today (I'm finishing it atm). Because THAT animatic is something he could totally see, especially if by some insane stroke of luck, it was featured on a QSMP Movie Night. We DO know he loves looking at animatics. If my friend has QSMP/Philza in the title of the animatic, it'll probably pop up when he searches for it.
