Good news, friends! I can still draw. I still possess the ability to hold a pencil, thought to be lost to the stress. Here are some pre-sleep sketches of some of KW's protagonists:

Bonus: sneak peek of Teodoro's (Cavalieri Head Housekeeper) design, because I'm really happy with how its turning up 🩵

OCtober 2024 day 23: community
@myrmyrtheorca one science girl coming right up! Anemone is also working hard, pipetting lots for qPCR 🫡 what a legend!
A yapping essay under the cut, I will talk science so you have been warned.
Now before I ramble about science I'm just gonna talk about the art for a bit. I did use a reference for this because I'm not insane and drawing the lineart with it was ... alright I would say. I actually looked through my own pictures and my uni website first in case I could find something as a ref but no dice so I needed to look it up anyways. I think the most difficult lineart to draw was the fucking pipettes... I need everyone to know that all the lab equipment (except maybe the blue regant holder) is a simplification of what it actually looks like because by god I could not replicate the real thing with my current skill set. I know most people will not give a fuck but I do so it needed to be said.
Otherwise colouring went okay and rendering wasn't extremely tedious. I noticed that I actually really like rendering blond hair, years ago I found this hack where you use red for the shadows and turn the opacity down and it works so well every time, I'm a bit obsessed tbh. I need to give more of my OCs blond hair lmao.
Okay enough about art let's talk science! Honestly this is really just me explaining science stuff, so feel free to skip because this can get long.
As I mentioned above I drew Anemone doing qPCR and I chose qPCR because her focus is genetic research. So basically she looks into the human genome (entire set of human genes) to see how it correlates to the Pallid Flame.
qPCR stands for quantitative polymerase chain reaction or real time polymerase chain reaction (RTpcr) and it's a valuable tool for analysing stuff down to genetic aka DNA level. You might have learnt about PCR in school but if not or if you've forgotten: PCR is the amplification of a specific gene aka you take one specific part of someone's DNA and replicate it a bunch of times. This is useful if you want to proof if a specific gene is present in the DNA you are analysing. Now qPCR also does the DNA amplification but as it already implies with the name it also counts how much the gene was amplified. You can use qPCR in many applications for example I used this method in my thesis to test if skin related genes are upregulated (higher gene expression aka genes are more activated? <- me trying to simplify genetics I'm not sure if this is the correct term of phrase) or down regulated (lower gene expression) when I put mast cells in my skin models. It gives you insight how certain factors affect cells on DNA level and since it will give you number at the end you can do statistics which is what everyone will really care about. I hope this explanation was at least somehow understandable if anyone has any questions I can talk more about this no prob 🫡
In fact I will talk more about it just... less why you do qPCR but more on how you do it. Because the thing is with this method... You need to pipette, you need to pipette A LOT. And honestly I'm really not a fan because you need to be so exact with this pipetting since each mistake you make stacks up and shows in your data at the end. It's very frustrating especially because there are a lot of steps where you can make mistakes and you need to be fully concentrated the entire time. I... I would say I'm good at my job but I really don't like this part of it because it grates on my nerves. But I think Anemone would be good at it, it's something repetitive that requires a steady hand and patience. Normally post Docs and even some PhD students let assisstants handle this job but I'd like to imagine that Anemone likes doing small things occasionally. Maybe not the entire process (there's a lot of prep work required for qPCR) but the last few steps she can take over, just for a change of pace.
#bweirdOCtober#khr#katekyo hitman reborn#khr oc#khr killer whale#anemone killer whale#art nook#i forgot to mention but i'm actually pretty ground of that background#is Anemone's lab even on ground level? i have no clue#but i wanted her lab to have windows with a nice view because being stuck in a basement lab is depressing (speaking from experience)#also I'm so sorry but I don't know how to draw her body type properly#i would need an exact reference for that and i didn't have it so I just winged it

*picks these up like chips* I'll answer one or two of these for the 4 main Killer Whale blorbos! Such interesting questions 🩵🩵 thank you!
C: Myr likes to pick on people but usually does that to those insufferable know-it-alls only (like Aoba), she doesn't condone bullying weak-looking people like Enma who did nothing wrong to her. I don't think they'd become friends, but she would probably be able to scare off his bullies for a while.
P: Lidija would be n.1 in the "People who collect maid outfits with the most taste" list.
M: a list of Tristam's hypothetical guardians for the funsies:
Storm - Rasiel (assuming he's alive and willing, the logistics of this could be a little hard to achieve but I like the idea)
Rain - Basil
Sun - Ginger Bread (first doll)
Lightning - present Gamma
Cloud - Skull
Mist - present Genkishi (assuming he exists? Does he exist in the present??)
one could probably see a pattern in this
K: Anemone would absolutely be in the liquidation committee because honestly she'd be the biggest Adelheid simp fan. Also she likes order, though she wouldn't enforce it through violence herself. She'd think Adelheid would be a good example to follow.
to everyone with ocs (I love u)
i'm too scared of getting personal to reblog the cool ask memes (?) so here is a somewhat similar one for ocs and/or characters in general. ... i did not finish the full alphabet, i am sorry. :')
reblog this and/or @ me and tell me about your oc in as many or as little as you want.
-
A: what happens if they get shot in the forehead with the dying will bullet?
B: what team would they be on in the rainbow representative arc...
C: would they be able to protect enma from bullies in a high school AU.
D: would they like or dislike interacting with cervello.
E: what flame type would they have in an AU where they have a different one?
F: what happens when you apply the 10-Year Bazooka directly to their forehead...
G: would they do well in school if you put their memories of their future arc self into their current/present self. (if they already are, what % are they on tests?)
H: how well/decently/poorly would their life go if they were genuinely lambo and i-pin's age.
I: what would they hate the most to have as a box animal. or a different one.
J: black spell or white spell in millefiore?
K: disciplinary committee or liquidation committee?
L: what if YOUR character had the sky mare ring instead of byakuran. what would they do with it.
M: make them a leader regardless of their actual role and give them 6 guardians of any type, any characters. (you can do this monotype or 2 types or whatever you want... think of this like making a pokemon team if you want a metaphor.)
N: would they willingly be part of vindice?
O: would they be a victim of mist flame ransomware? would they even know what's going on...
P: what are the ranks they'd be #1 in if you had fuuta ask the ranking planet?
-
... i'm tired and that's enough for now lmao.

Sea Lavender (Limonium Spectabile) -- sort of like Sea cucumber, Sea Lemon, strawberry anemone -- this is an oceangoing animal that is named after a terran plant. These predate (eat, as in predate-or, not come before) killer whales and the outlaw Josey Wales. Predating (pun intended) is what future fathers-in-law would like to do with their (youngish) daughters' first few boyfriends.

Whalefall
(part one)
WMFTD AU (mermaid au)
Word count: 7k
Warnings: dark, violence, hunting, devouring, different morality rules, marriage of convenience, dubious consent, non-graphic sex acts in later parts, talks of past cannibalism, cannibalism set in-world mythology, Happy ending, no beta
Summary: Eat or be eaten was the universal rule of the seven seas, no matter if one existed in the sunlit oceans or the deepest, darkest pits of the undersea.
Prince Hypnos, traumatized and desperate, agreed to a marriage that he didn’t want if it meant safety from those nightmarish orcas.
Only to end up in the maw of a different beast altogether.
Notes: please heed warnings. I will have a post with visuals aids that is a work in progress but I thought some might like to see it.
@jun-yng thank you for listening to my late night ramblings! Everyone go look at their amazing art!
Enjoy!
~
It should have been like any other day.
The sunlight warm on his damp skin, the sound of foamy waves crashing against cool gray rocks filled his ears as he found his nap spot. A large stone in the center of it all, warm from the sunbeams.
His eyes went heavy with relaxation and with a full belly, Hypnos had settled on it along with a few others to sleep his day away.
Then the screaming began.
What he remembered was watching, frozen in disbelief as one of the smaller mermaids was tossed up into the air, her tail a flash of green in the bright blue skies, screaming for her mama before dropping down into an orca's waiting, too pink mouth to be dragged down into the depths, never to be seen again.
Moments later another and another and the screams blurring together.
He remembered how bloody the sea foam turned. The sheer panic and cries as others tried to escape before being pulled down to the depth.
Hypnos didn’t know how he made it home, everything was a blur, black gaps in his mind. Did he swim faster? Did he just hide a little better?
Maybe it had just been pure dumb luck.
Every moment, even years afterwards in his old age much of that day shall remain only the blank spots upon his otherwise vivid memories. Beastly creatures of black and white and bloody, yellowed teeth were all he saw amist torn bodies. Demons unlike anything else.
He fled, amidst the gut wrenching horrors and deadly panic, tearing burning his eyes.
That day was the day that everything changed.
~
(Six months since the first attack.)
Cursing his luck and his twin for not waking him up in time, Hypnos rushed through the hallways.
“Oh No. No. Don’t bother waking me up or anything.” Hypnos grumbled, his scarlet tail gleaming with the speed he was going. “Nope. Just leave me behind like everyone else.”
Once a cave, it had now been exposed with holes carved to act as windows, the stoney walls made beautiful with colorful corals, rich kelp and lively sea anemones.
Too bad Hypnos won’t be around to enjoy the beauty, his mom was going to kill him for missing what might be the most important gathering since the Kingdom’s founding.
Queen Nyx had made it clear they needed this work out in their favor.
The orcas were getting bolder by the day, circling ever closer into the reef and this clan of Titan mermaids were supposedly the only ones who could help.
He glanced outside with a nervous frown at the window as he passed one, half expecting a killer whale to be grinning right at him. There was nothing, of course. Just the reef, filled with animals and other mermaids.
He curled a hand on his stomach, the sourness of his deep fear was nearly enough to make him feel woozy.
When he saw the curtains of shells, painted to be dark purples and blacks, he let out a breath. The guards bowed their heads when they saw him but Hypnos didn’t acknowledge them.
He impatiently pushed past the curtains of shells, the clacking noises no doubt brought attention to him as he rushed into the meeting hall. ”I’m sorry! I am up! Wide awake! I‘m just swimin- oof!”
Hypnos somehow slammed into a wall, the solidness of it causing him to bounce back, blinding stars dancing in his eyes before his sleep mask fell down, blocking his vision.
Then a large, calloused hand grabbed him by the arm, holding him in place in a tight, almost bruising grip.
There was a silence now, heavy and unnatural enough that even Hypnos knew something was wrong.
It felt just like those breathless, horrible moments before the orcas had attacked.
Before he could move his sleep mask, someone else did for him, sliding off him with a surprising gentleness. Hypnos blinked a few times, peering up at the stranger he slammed into, his lips parted to come up with a playful apology.
He stopped, voice dying in his throat.
Somehow Hypnos he knew was looking at a titan. Impossibly huge, blocking out everyone else in the room, the titan stared down at him with an intensity that burned.
For a long moment, all he saw were those beautiful, terrifying irises. The power in your stare could rival storms.
Then Hypnos blinked, his eyes studying your face with the desperation of a caught prey.
You were handsome with a brutal masculinity that he wasn’t used to, the scars on your face and shoulders spoke of a hard life unknown to his kind. You wore no crown but the heavy, undeniable pressure of your dark presence made sure you didn’t need one.
It wasn’t until he heard whispering that Hypnos realized he had been frozen in place. He wanted to move but he couldn’t, feeling like he was caught in the obit of something larger than him.
Then you let him go, your hand brushing against his vulnerable back and you pushed him carefully toward his family. Hypnos took off like a shot, meeting Thanatos’ disbelieving stare with a guilty shrug as he took his place on the far end of his family line.
His mom’s advisers were whispering in her ear, all of them glancing at Hypnos with wide, desperate eyes. There was an almost invisible pitch to her brow, an hesitation that he wasn't used to seeing on her pale face.
Then she looked away, her golden eyes going to you. Hypnos didn’t want to look at you but his own body betrayed him.
You must have been double, almost thrice his size, both in mass and height. Hypnos suspected if you and him laid side by side, he could maybe just reach your chest. Your muscular, powerful form was littered by scars, some faded, some not.
It was the powerful tail that caught Hypnos’ attention, making his breath hitched nervously, it was black as a killer whale and he suspected just as strong, just as swift. There were even more scars too, some were clear bite marks while others were circles.
Surrounded by capable warriors, they were all looking at Hypnos. Their eyes darted to his tail to his long curls. He couldn't help but notice most of them were of the shark and whale variety, titans in their own right.
Hypnos caught one of them mouthing to another, ‘blessed’.
“Titan King, please excuse my youngest.” His mom folded on her hands on her lap, her fingers interlaced together tightly. “This is Prince Hypnos, my second to be born on the summer harvest moon and twin to Prince Thanatos.”
Hypnos frowned her, usually he was induced as one of her children, no name needed. He felt the weight of your eyes on him, and slowly he met your gaze.
It was like watching a predator decide on exactly how it would like to crack an crab apart to feast on it.
“No need for an apology, Queen Nyx. Prince Hypnos’ presence is a delightful surprise.” You said, voice low as the dark depths of the seas. Hypnos felt goosebumps formed on his arms and he tore his eyes away.
The same instinct that saved him from the attack was screaming in his head to swim out of the room, kingdom be damned
He didn’t.
~
The Titan clan laid out their demands.
They will provide ongoing protection, along with a certain amount caught kills and goods in exchange for:
All their citizens will have the same rights as the Kingdom’s citizens while living here.
They will be allowed to make a permanent home here if they so wish.
Children would be allowed to go to the same schools if their parents wish for it.
Their religious freedom will be respected and protected.
Overall, it seemed more than fair to Hypnos, considering many of these people were risking their lives to protect the Kingdom.
However there was one term that one the Titan King and Queen Nyx spoke about alone. Somehow Hypnos knew it was about him even before his mom came to speak to him.
The fearsome Titan King had requested Prince Hypnos’ hand in marriage, claiming it would seal the bond between the clans in ways ink and spilled blood never would.
You can refuse it. His mom had informed him, her fine boned hand on his cheek. Her face was solemn, pale and beautiful in the gentle light of the bioluminescence. Her dark hair spread out like the night skies, her pearls gleaming like stars
Even with the growing distance between them, Hypnos knew she would honor his refusal, and would protect him any way possible, no matter how terrifying the Titan King was.
He thought of the blood, the screams and the cloud of heavy fear that fell over the kingdom since the attack. How long had it been since they last left the reef, or celebrated anything with fearfully looking over their shoulders?
He couldn’t pick up a spear and fight those awful beasts but… he knew the Titan King could, and had before against other pods.
This could be how Hypnos helps in the efforts. Marriage was a lifelong bond in his culture, meant to be one of love but if he had to do it for the kingdom, he would.
If they were mates, not even the King could break those vows made to him.
Quietly, as if he couldn’t believe he was really doing it, he agreed.
That night he dreamt of loud clicking noise rushing right in behind him, louder than the screams and pink gaping maws and of yellowed teeth digging into his flesh-
He woke up, gasping as Monie, his little pufferfish, nuzzled against his palm reassuringly. Hypnos brought his closest friend to his chest and tried not to weep as blackness and blood swirled in his mind’s eye.
Hypnos had no right to weep, he had lived and so had his family. He didn’t lose any children, siblings, loved ones, his heart was still whole.
The memories of the orcas' clicking noises, so much like mocking laughter, rang in his ears and he took a shaky breath, mouth quivering as he tried to fight off more tears.
Maybe it was wrong but Hypnos would have happily sold his own soul to never know such fear again.
~
(three weeks later)
It was his wedding day.
Hypnos took a sharp, nervous inhale as one of the attendants revealed his gown.
It was beautiful, an ivory color that reminded him of an underbelly of a whale shark, woven with complex netting with looping geometric shapes that made him feel dizzy.
The overall shape was simple with heavy sleeves and a deep v that would reach his belly button.
When the distant sunlight touched it, he saw the gleaming pearls and diamonds laced through. Only once had Hypnos ever seen snow. He had been a child, peering over rocks with his twin at the strange lands, the snow beautiful in the morning light.
Flicking his ruby red tail, Hypnos nodded his reluctant approval. Not that it mattered much, the marriage was happening no matter what.
Which was fine. Really. He wouldn’t have agreed otherwise. Hypnos may be the youngest but he understood his duty to the kingdom, to their people.
It came first, always.
Hypnos wasn’t ashamed, however to admit that his fear of being devoured by a killer whale had been the major reason he agreed to this. The primal drive to survive was overpowering even the fear of the unknown, of marrying a complete stranger.
Besides, the stars knew that you, the Titan King, looked scary enough to fight off even a god.
The dress was heavy, dragging in the soft currents of the water and the fabric silky soft against his skin. It caused him to shiver from the sensation, goosebumps forming up to his ears.
More things were brought out by the attendants, delicate necklaces and shining crowns that looked all the same to Hypnos.
More dressings for the meal, him being the meal that is. Hypnos moved, realizing how much help he would need to even to sit down or go anywhere. The dress in all of beauty was a trap, holding him down.
Khariklo and a few more attendees helped him toward his stool. Their hands pushed him as Hypnos struggled to move under his own powers.
Jewels, all that sparkling like the stars, were held up to him, waiting for his approval. Hypnos felt blinded by their beauty, his throat tight. Wasn’t it enough that he was sacrificing himself?
He waved a hand toward Khariklo, the royal’s family court dancer who now retired into their event planner, letting her hand pick whatever she thought would work, as he settled on top of the stool. The smooth rock wasn’t comfortable but it was better than nothing.
Marriage. The mere word was enough to make Hypnos’ stomach twist.
He stayed still as the artist applied light makeup to his face, murmuring how lucky he was to have such lovely cheekbones. He didn’t bother to check her work once she was done.
Maybe he would look like a total jester and you would change your mind about marrying him.
It was the whispering conversation behind him that made his ears perk up, his back straightened.
“Those titans are primitive. They don’t even have currency. One of them tried to barter at the markets with a giant tuna.” One of the attendants hissed to the other, their hands busy holding one of the bags filled with tiny shells that rattled bothersomely.
What those shells would be for was beyond him.
“Did you know they still worship the ancient ones?” One more added, their disapproving obvious with every syllable.
“I heard they have a yearly sacrifice where they hunt and eat the children. All of them.” Another one added in with a hush. There were soft gasps of horror but Hypnos frowned, turning around to look at them.
“How in the world does that work? Wouldn’t they eat themselves out of existence?” Hypnos made a ‘poof’ gesture as he spoke.
Wide eyes met his in shock, as if they had forgotten he was there. Their mouths gaping like they had forgotten how to use their gills. Hypnos wanted to laugh at the sight.
“Shoo!” Khariklo hissed, her sharp teeth bared as she placed her hands on his shoulders. She glared down at the attendants until they fled, the waters bubbling from this hasty retreat.
When Hypnos turned around to face her, she gave him one of her amazing and terrifying smiles. Those teeth were the only clue that spoke of her Titian blood.
Her beauty had aged but never faded, her dark hair marked by silver like a night sea kissed by moonlight. Yet, her tail was her real glory, her scales were a gorgeous opalescent with shining blues, pale pinks and jade greens in the light.
She had been a dancer in the Queen’s court in her youth, even after her marriage to the scholar Chrion of the SeaHorse Clan. It had been said crowds of merfolks had wept the day she wedded, their hearts broken by the blessed dancer.
Hypnos tried to smile but it was weaker. The only one weeping for Hypnos would be himself.
She clicked her tongue, joining him on the rock with her arm around him. “It will be okay, Hypnos. I'm positive the Titan King doesn’t eat babies.”
Hypnos let out a disbelieving laugh, “You haven’t met him.”
The memories of the looming titan staring down at Hypnos, with eyes that were like a brewing storm, filled with raw power that haunted his dreams. Hypnos had denied all requests for another meeting, deciding that any matters can be dealt with after the marriage.
But the mere weeks haven't been enough to fade the memory of those haunting eyes. Sometimes, he could have sworn he felt those eyes on him only to turn around and see nothing.
“I actually have.” Khariklo corrected gently, grabbing a set of shells, dyed a deep purple and held them up to his hair thoughtfully before she placed them aside. “He used to be small enough for me to put in my shell bag. He was cute too, always taking a nap while I hunted.”
Hypnos blinked in surprise and Khariklo continued with a smile. “My husband was actually the former king’s teacher as well. I met him even before he was old enough to hunt. He may not look like it, your Highness, but he does have a gentle side, you will have nothing to fear from him.”
At those words, he gave a doubtful hum that Khariklo politely ignored.
He was pretty sure that you were spat out by a dark cave in hell, full formed and hungry. The idea of you ever being small and adorable was laughable to him.
Khariklo ignored him, studying the jewelry pillows the attendants held up for her. She bypassed the complex crowns, the more fancy circlets then she paused over one that Hypnos couldn’t see.
With a delighted grin, she grabbed a single hair piece, a golden comb encrusted with rubies, pearls and tiny white shells.
Her gentle hands worked on the side of his head, pushing and twisting until the comb sat prettily, with his curls spilling over his other shoulder.
It made him feel completely exposed.
Two attendants brought a full length mirror, coming to full stop in front of him. When Hypnos felt brave enough to finally look, he didn’t recognize the other person before him.
The artist had emphasized his eyes, making his irises molten and the fan of his lashes heavy. His gills and ears were marked with seaweed glitter, making them shiny. His cheeks were marked with a soft blush that brought out the lines of his cheeks.
Somehow, they transformed Hypnos into someone else, a beautiful prince of a sort. He leaned forward, his fingers brushing against his hair and murmured his approval numbly.
There were many things he wanted but most of all, Hypnos wished he had one of his sleep masks.
~
It was waiting that was killing him.
Hypnos’ heart raced like stormy waves, pounding against his chest as he was led down to the grand halls by guards and attendants.
Deep in the rooms of the grand hall with a silent guard, he studied the mosaics along the wall. Each stone shone like precious gems in the sunlight, drawing the eye toward the masterpiece. It told of the kingdom’s history.
The birth of the first sirens, falling out of sky from the first sunrise and into the depths of the seas, bringing colors to the reefs and giving animals their beautiful colors and patterns.
Simmering lights outside of the window caught his attention, the sun turning the whole sea golden as sunset began. Outside there were crowds of cheerful, loud siren mermaids, all dressed in gleaming stones and precious metals.
Even in the face of danger, they were determined to shine during celebrations. Hypnos couldn’t decide if he thought it was foolish or brave of them. Both perhaps.
The Titans clan members were there as well, more subdued in their muted black and grays with red paints or tattoos on their arms and shoulders. They stuck together, cheering even as the sirens gave them a wide berth.
When he looked past everyone, He saw some of your warriors, their weapons and shields at the ready. They wore no paint so as to avoid calling attention to themselves.
Good, Hypnos mused with a touch of relief even if there was some bitterness, not even married yet and you were already attending to your promises.
“Are you sure about this, Hypnos?” Thanatos’ voice surprised him but the dragging, near claustrophobia weight of the dress kept Hypnos from moving too much. Hypnos flashed Thanatos a shaky grin, his hands fluttering nervously.
“Sure! I mean who doesn’t dream of one day marrying a total - and definitely not scary at all- stranger for the sake of the kingdom?” Hypnos squeaked.
Thanatos blinked at the rush of words, his own neck and shoulders adorned with layers of muted gold necklaces, with various stones of pale jade and rich diopsides, cut into neat circles.
It suited him, where Hypnos’ tail was an eyesore shade of red, Thanatos’ sturdy tail was a beautiful, deeply rich shade of emerald. Often Hypnos had listened to how handsome his twin was, how he looked like a storybook prince.
And Hypnos… Hypnos was just himself even if dolled up in a dress. Not for the first time, he wondered why it was his hand you wanted and not Thanatos’.
Hypnos gave him a hopeful glance, that Thanatos will tell Hypnos that he doesn’t have to do this. That they are going to run away and hide like they used to as children.
“It is good that you are swimming up for the challenge. You had been inattentive of your duties for too long.” Thanatos sighed and the hope flickered out Hypnos’ chest like a dying light.
Hypnos closed his eyes in quiet hurt, because really was this the time to lecture him- warmth touched Hypnos’ shoulder, Thanatos’ grip sure as he gave Hypnos a squeeze.
Wearily, Hypnos met his twin's gaze. The same golden irises as their mom’s, rich as the sun.
“Now that said.” Thanatos whispered. “If he lays a finger on you, come to me and I promise I will make him regret it.”
The wobbly smile grew on his face without his permission, “I know you will. I still remembered you telling Nemesis off that one time.”
“The look on her face.” Thanatos chuckled with a head shake. “I was terrified to leave our rooms after that for weeks. I had to sneak around any time I left.”
For the first time all day, Hypnos laughed, the movements causing the gown to shimmered in the light. The sounds of faint drumming began, low but picking up speed. Moments later, heavenly voices began to sing, ringing out through the whole kingdom. The beautiful song had no words, just pure vocals and emotions.
Thanatos offered an arm and Hypnos took it reluctantly with a sigh, not wanting the moment to end.
It had become so rare for him and Thanatos to get along.
Hypnos breathed, his fingers trembling as the weight of the moment settled on him. This was it. He would be married to a perfect stranger and he would have done his duty to the kingdom. He just hoped… he just hoped the price of safety would be worth it.
“Ready?” His twin asked, his tone gentle as he began to move forward.
“Nope. I never will be but let's go anyway.” Hypnos replied, his eyes locked ahead onto the double doors, of where his future laid before him.
They lingered at the door for several painful heartbeats, forever and a second coexisting in his chest, spiraling in his chest like a pair of lovelorn sea turtles.
When the door opened, all he saw was blinding, simmering colors, deepened by the distant sunlight. Music swelled, their voices reaching a fevered pitch as Thanatos guided him down the aisle, every single face was a blur to him as they passed by.
Somehow in the dizzying kaleidoscopic beauty of the grand hall, his eyes found you. A dark focal point in the center of the world, and you stood like you belonged there, everything fleeting but you.
Odd, how he remembered you so well from that short moment yet he somehow had forgotten the unrelenting presence you carried like a weapon.
Your orca-like tail had a shine to it now, making the many pale scars looked almost like shooting stars amidst the void. You wore no golden crown nor heavy jewelry but Hypnos realized there were new, geometric markings on your powerful arms and heavy broad shoulders.
Hypnos met your eyes for a single moment as they arrived at the front and he flushed at the intensity of your stare. Never had anyone looked at him like before and he didn’t know what to make of it.
Then the music ended suddenly, the silence deafening as Hypnos tore his gaze away, unable to swallow past the knot in his throat.
It took a moment for the priest to speak, their voice loud in the quiet as they ordered merfolks to sit. The words were nearly lost in the ringing in Hypnos’ ears, not realizing that the priest had now turned to him and Than.
“Prince Thanatos, the starbright and beloved son of Queen Nyx and of the glorious Kingdom. Who do you present?”
Thanatos’ voice was strong, unwavering as he stared daggers at the Titan King, fearless in a way Hypnos never could be. “I present my beloved twin, bound to me until today. He is made of the same sea form as my own flesh was and I his. Prince Hypnos, who is beloved by me and beloved by Queen Nyx and by all of the kingdom. We all entrust him to your care.”
Hypnos felt tears stinging but he blinked them away. He wanted to make a joke, to say ‘aww shucks’ but it seemed like he had lost his voice as well.
Your hand moved with a regal grace, palm up to accept Hypnos’ hand. Somehow he let go of Thanatos, feeling as if he was floating outside of his body as his hand slid into yours.
Your skin was roughed and scarred from countless battles and never ending traveling, your fingers thick and broad, your thumb was adorned by a heavy signet ring, a sign of your kingship. Hypnos found himself admiring it as your fingers curled around his hand, engulfing him in a gentle hold.
”I am honored. No soul, no glory nor heavy crown shall come before beloved Prince Hypnos. This, I solemnly vow to you Prince Thanatos, Queen Nyx as well your kingdom and mine.” The low timber of your voice was a shock to his system, bringing him back with a jolt.
Thanatos bowed and moved out of the way. The priest began to speak, their voice muffled as Hypnos tried to control his breathing.
“Welcome one and all, under the glorious sunlight seas…”
Before he knew it, the priest finished speaking, peering at Hypnos with clear expectations.
”I-“ Hypnos swallowed. How did he end up here? “I do.”
“I do.” You replied smoothly when the priest glanced toward you. As you spoke, Hypnos felt something on his forearm and he glanced down, seeing the ruby encrusted band as it snapped close around him.
When your fingers brushed over his cheek, Hypnos looked up at you in a daze. You wore a serene expression, like this was fate but there was a heavy storm brewing in your eyes, shadows hidden in those depths. You lean down, tipping his chin up.
The kiss was utterly chaste, sea foam soft and light as a bubble. It should have felt underwhelming but Hypnos gasped softly like he had been marked.
In a way, he supposed, he had been.
~
The feast that followed was so elaborate that Hypnos’ head spun, and not just from the fermented seaweed wine he consumed.
Laughter and cheerful music flowed from the windows, bioluminescent plants casting soft, warm lights in the ballroom as the sun finally gave into the sea, falling into the horizon and the moon rose to kiss the void.
Various exquisite meals were brought out, each one tasted like sand in his mouth. The drinks poured with a heavy hand as dancers and party goers swayed and spun to the music. Hypnos took another greedy gulp, the umami flavor heavy on his tongue.
There were soft conversations surrounding them, a mixture of your strongest warriors and their mates and higher ranking members of your clan. Prince Hypnos’ family and the Kingdom’s nobles kept to themselves, murmuring and eyeing the newcomers suspiciously.
His husband - his husband. What had the world turned into?- sat next to him, drink mostly untouched. You were observing the dancing with a curious frown. Like you had never seen such things before.
“I don’t dance.” Hypnos warned in a grumpy mutter, picking at a bit of fish covered in some orange sauce. He took a bite, not really tasting it. “I dance like a drunk seahorse.”
That made your lips twitch upward, and for a moment, Hypnos tried to imagine you smiling but all he saw in his mind’s eye was big, pointy teeth to eat him with.
“I was never fond of it myself.” You replied, leaning closer to him slightly. The low tone of your voice rumbled through him, the heat of your body close to him felt intimate in a way he wasn’t sure of. “Despite Lady Khariklo’s endless patience and attempts.”
Hypnos flushed, and grabbed his drink to have something to do. “Oh. That’s nice…” he squeaked, glancing away.
Thankfully you left him alone after that, speaking to one of his mother’s advisers and Sir Chiron. He just had to get through this feast, then all was left to do was… the wedding night.
Oh gods, maybe he could fake being ill and he won’t have to do anything.
And he will have to continue that lie for every single night of their marriage until you or him die. Yup. He could definitely pull that off.
Hypnos peered at you from the corner of his eye, allowing himself the moment to study you. In the dim lights, shadows and lights casted over your powerful form, highlighting the curves and dips in the strong, well-built muscles. You were broader than most, but carried it with a warrior’s grace.
The geometric tattoos were striking against your skin, a deep red that nearly matched Hypnos’ tail. His eyes traced along the lines, the way they almost folded in together. There had to be a meaning to it, but it was lost to him.
Even terrifying as you were, you were handsome, fascinating in a primal way Hypnos wasn’t used to. If Hypnos was going to be honest with himself, he probably would have welcomed the attention from someone like you.
Your tail flickered, pure power and aggressive lines. Just like those deadly orcas. His gaze lifted up and he realized that you were watching him. Your expression was unreadable but that stormy intensity had returned to your eyes.
Heat rushed up past his gills, up his ears and he pointly turned away. He polished off his drink, not offering up excuses or apologies. He thought he heard a faint chuckle from you and somehow his blush became worse.
“Your highness?” One of the attendants neared, her head bowed. “The matchmaker had readied the rooms.”
Suddenly everything he ate and drank threatened to come back up. Maybe if he allowed it, you would call it off. But he doubted that, besides the whole ‘I do’ thing seemed pretty binding.
So, Hypnos placed the cup down clumsily and moved upward from his seat. Nearby eyes landed on him but thankfully the party was in full swing, so most didn’t even realize what was happening. “Erm. Alright then.”
Hypnos glanced at you, biting on his lip. “I guess I shall see you later?”
You nodded, watching him over the rim of your cup. “You shall.”
That definitely didn’t sound like a threat. Hypnos bobbed his head and the attendant helped Hypnos make a swift exit from the party.
~
Hypnos might feed this heavy dress to a shark, no matter how beautiful it was. He sighed as he flopped on a chaise, pulling his tail up in a lazy curl.
Unfortunately he couldn’t take it off himself, the buttons in the back were impossible for him to open and the matchmaker was completely unhelpful.
She had informed him with a haughty sniff that it was his husband’s duty, not hers. One starfish out of five starfishes for her. If he could go lower, he would have.
Hypnos gave a long, deep sigh as he slumped deeper into the chaise, the long day finally catching up to him. He was too exhausted and tipsy to even care about your impending arrival. Glancing about the rooms, he had to admit the space was lovely.
The bioluminescent plants, bred to create dim amber lights and pale lavenders that kissed shades of rosy pinks and deep blues, made the whole room feel like it had been immortalized in the twilight hour. Thick shell curtains had been installed over the windows in layers, giving a sense of privacy with rich artwork placed along the walls.
It took him a moment to realize that they were all heavy with symbolism for marriage and fertility. In one, adorable sea turtles danced together in foamy waves, becks bumping together. Another was a pattern of moonstones and rose quartz. Hypnos tilted his head and to him, it looked like rows of healthy and very erect penises.
He snorted in disbelief then giggled because of all the things he expected, it wasn’t that. He dismissed the artworks, eyes drifting over the bed.
The bed was inviting, tucked into a large crevice, padded with fresh kelp and patted down sand. He yawned widely, blinking heavily as he watched the plants sway.
He was just going to rest his eyes.
Just… for a moment…
~
(Y/N’s Pov)
This kingdom was made of kaleidoscopic glass, beautiful and dizzying. You felt as if you moved in one wrong direction, it would cause the walls to crumble around you.
This was a strange place, filled with even stranger beings. Their songs and dances were unlike anything you have seen before. You have traveled far and wide since you were a child. You had seen the blue glaciers of a world made of ice to lands with imposing mountains in the far distance to reefs so large they could be the whole world for all you knew.
Yet those unusual worlds paled in comparison to this kingdom.
Then you saw Queen Nyx from the nearby table and her cool expression hardened when she met your eyes. She never said it, she didn’t need to but you knew she despised you for daring to ask for one of her beloved children.
You didn’t flinch, accepting her hateful stare with an unwavering glare of your own. You lifted your cup in a mock greeting, lifting an eyebrow as her eyes narrowed.
If it hadn’t been Prince Hypnos coming into that meeting when he did, you would have turned down their unfair deals, leaving them to the whales after the endless insults her people had given your clan over the long years.
There were plenty of reefs but warriors of the titans’s caliber were rare and high in demand. And they both knew it.
With a cool look that dismissed you, Queen Nyx moved to the side as she spoke to Prince Thanatos, the one most likely to replace her if your spies had been correct.
A moment later, Pa joined you at the table. His dark eyes solemn as a nearby servant poured a fresh cup of wine for him. The shifting light caught on the deep turquoise scales of Pa’s tail, giving the appearance of gentle water.
You accepted a refill, nodding your thanks as the servant left. Nothing was said between parent and son as the music swelling as merfolks paired off to dance in a dizzy array of gleaming scales.
“Father?” You asked quietly, pushing a plate of food toward Pa. You weren’t sure what meat it was, it had been so heavily coated in some fancy sweet sauce that you didn’t care for.
Pa wrinkled his nose at it, not fond of sweets as Father was. He did accept the oysters however. “He had gone to check on the guards for new reports.”
You nodded, scowling as you took a deep sip of the wine. You didn’t like that there had been no sighting of the orcas since your arrival.
They were deadly, clever and mean as hell animals. You knew they were observing everything, including you and your warrors for any weak point. Most merfolks didn’t accept other mammals as intellectual equals but you did.
Far as you were concerned, the only reason they didn’t use spears or create kingdoms was because they had fins instead of hands.
“Are you sure about this? He doesn’t know how to fight nor how to lead. He might bless you with a child at some point but that is hardly a good reason.” Pa spoke in a whisper, the concern in his voice unmistakable. “I doubt he will even grant you some much needed peace of mind.”
Patroclus was your real advisor although he didn’t carry that title, had the one to protest the match. He had wanted someone one different for you, another ruler by your side that will help guild the clan into a new era.
He wasn’t wrong for his opinion, you were smart enough to acknowledge that the situation was odd.
Much as you had tried, the prince had eluded every single meeting, even the ones his twin had promised for him to appear. Countless excuses had been given by terrified servants, from needing to feed his beloved pet to having a cold to simply just being too busy.
You had been assured that Hypnos wasn’t being controlled, that he chose marriage to you with his own free will.
Oddly enough, you had been more amused than anything else. A tad disappointed since you longed to see the pretty little morsel once more but years of being a hunter had trained you in patience.
Even though you had only shared a short dinner, you were already delighted by his prickly attitude. You certainly had enjoyed that deep flush his pale, bluish skin was unable to hide. You wanted to poke and prod at him like an immature youth with a crush, to see if you could get a bigger response from him.
The brief moment you had touched Hypnos, had seen the starlit gold of his eyes was like feeling your own heartbeat begin all over again.
A sign from the Goddess herself. If you haven’t met Queen Nyx, you would believe that he fell from the impossible skies into the sea. Hypnos may have borne from Queen Nyx’ womb but the goddess had created him, carefully crafting him in her moonlight beauty.
You didn't love Prince Hypnos like a mate should, not yet. Although you certainly wanted him like one would desire a mate. It took all your willpower not to steal him away in the night like the ancient warriors used to. To take and claim him solely as yours and yours alone.
The memories of the ceremony came back in a rush. His fingers had been long and elegant, each one free of marks or scars. You had been awestruck by how much he was so alike those fragile seashells.
Beautiful and easily crushed.
“Yes.” You stated quietly.
That was all you needed to say. Pa bowed in his head in acceptance, placing a gentle hand on your shoulder, right over your new tattoos. Proof that you were deemed worthy of marriage and the second symbol of your Kingship.
The pattern of red meandros covered your hands and encased your arms, going over your shoulders to connect at your nape. When you clasped your fingers together, it formed an unbroken circle.
A symbol of eternity and unity, a way to honor the goddess and her mate’s journey to the next world as one.
“I know our goddess won’t mislead me.” You assured him with a squeeze before his hand left, the warmth of it felt an unspoken farewell.
Patroclus was kind, or perhaps wise enough, to keep his thoughts to himself before leaving, no doubt to join Father. You finished off the drink, letting the heat of it warm your core.
A fearsome king yet even you seeked liquid courage.
Once you were sure there were no eyes on you, you slipped out of the party. You had a husband to find.
~
Twilight spilled around you, pooling on the floor as you entered. You closed the door behind you quietly, scanning the room as you did so. It was small, cozy if one was being generous.
You stilled when your eyes locked onto the pale figure on the chaise, a drop of moonlight in dimness. Like a dumb fish captivated by the beautiful light of an anglerfish, you went to him.
Prince Hypnos was asleep, blissfully unaware of the world around him, his heavy lashes flushed against his cheeks. His lips parted slightly, the gills moving an easy, even rhythm. His slender arms were sprawled carelessly, one hand over his stomach, the other over his head. His tail fins, coral red and delicate, swayed in the gentle drifts, brushing the floor.
You devoured the sight of him like a starved creature.
Then you realized he was still wearing that damn dress. You had been surprised they married him in something that looked like a deadly trap, you had silently wondered if it had been intentional. The white fabric, the soft gleam of pearls, the flash of diamonds were beautiful- and completely worthless in your eyes simply for the danger it imposed on Prince Hypnos.
What if there had been an attack during the ceremony? Sure, they were deep inside the reef but there were no guarantees when it came to battles.
However you were hesitant to wake him up, he looked so lovely, so peaceful like this. You moved away quietly, cutting through the waters to get your spear.
The heavy weight of it was a welcomed comfort in your hands. You also grabbed the stone map of the Kingdom that you have given by Chrion, intent on studying it once more. You placed the spear close by the bed, as you settled on the edge of the bed.
The map went ignored in your hands, your eyes locked onto the sleeping form of Hypnos.
He was a perfect stranger to you yet you felt the heady call in your blood, to pull him close, to learn him until you knew him like the ocean currents, like the weight of a spear in your hands.
You ached with want, to press in so close, to devour his whole being just as the goddess did her beloved mate, so you and him would never be apart. Two beings in one body, one soul.
No matter what happens, you decided to yourself, you would make him want you just as much as you wanted him.
No matter what.

I WAS BUSTED I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO GIVE HER AT THE TIME-
but now I did some more research™️!! And found it!! Thank you for spreading awareness about how I mistreat my OCs I'm afraid they'll start a union soon /j

I was going to suggest Alan be a selkie due to having an animal skin and seals being doglike… someone else already drew their guy as a selkie. Maybe a dogfish? They’re a type of shark and could probably lurk in a kelp forest. (The hatchetfish wasn’t large or predatory enough.)
It would be funny for nervous rounded brightly coloured Stu to be a pufferfish mer. Or a goldfish mer.
If Erika was more outwardly feisty I’d suggest a Betta fish mer (Siamese fighting fish.) They’re very fashionable looking fish and a bit intimidating.
Carver would be based on an orca no doubt. (Someone drew theirs already but you can’t say the black and white scheme and playfully sadistic temperament don’t match. It’s called a killer whale.) Or an eel. Or a sea snake.
Stitches would probably be based on some scary deep sea creature like an anglerfish, an anemone (with his belly) or an octopus.
while interesting-
they live in the woods
forest animals baybeee

In the superfox world are merfolk generally all about human size or is there a lot of variation?
(Mostly just because I thought about small goldfish-sized mers swimming around in a lake)
Obviously Tai is bigger than the avarage sea bream, but are there fish-sized mers or is it just a spectrum of different human heights
Merfolk generally have more variation than humans, but less than fish.
For example, a full grown merfolk of a smaller fish species like goldfish are typically the size of a human child. That’s ~2’ of human and 3-4’ of tail depending on the species.
Meanwhile a full grown great white shark mer can typically be 4-5’ of human with 10-11’ of tail, making them more shark sized than human.
Your typical big fish mer will be approximately human sized. This being things like marlin, catfish, tuna, stingray, etc. etc.
Things like whale merfolk (save for smaller species like dolphin, belugas, and killer whales) are a bit of an anomaly because they can reach massive lengths of 50-80’ long and have a ton of variation. The mamallian merfolk are their own thing
Merfolk also tend to have similar variation in size based on sex that fish do. This means females are typically larger than males.
This is also your standard western merfolk. These things can vary based on your species of merfolk itself. Ningyo have less variation than your typical merfolk and are usually much smaller, around the size of the small fish mers regardless of their species.
I’m not even sure where to begin classifying things like jellyfish, crabs, or octopi to be honest. They’re not even in the same phylum as the other mers and it’s driving me insane. I might just have to make it so merfolk can only be mammals or fish. Bringing in other phylum means having to consider the existence of anemone, coral, snail, clam and spider merfolk and that hurts my brain. They would make sick designs but oh god what is that biology

my awesome ideas for water-type (or generally marine) pokemon:
more sharks. there are so many interesting species they could pull from. hammerhead shark! thresher shark! whale shark! and that's just to name a few
pokemon based on swordfish/marlin/sailfish. IMAGINE how cool that would look
lumpfish pokemon. very beautiful. very powerful
LIONFISH pokemon would be kinda sick
generally just. a whole bunch more vibrant reef fish. would love to see them add like 15-20 new fish pokemon at once based on what you'd find in a coral reef lmao
more cetacean pokemon! would be so cool to see pokemon based on orcas or false killer whales or any other species of whale or dolphin
more GATORS/CROCS! i personally would really like to see a cajun croc or a floridian gator
water snakes. i dont think theyve touched on that yet and i think they should
more nautical-themed pokemon??? actually kinda surprising they dont have very many of those??? i mean they have dhelmise which is like a sunken anchor/ship wheel which is pretty cool but cmon bro how do they NOT have more pokemon that are like sailors or boats. i could easily see them making a pokemon that either is often mistaken for a boat when out at sea or is like a ghost that possessed a sunken ship or smth
more seabirds! ospreys, sandpipers, herons. i'd even take more seagulls and pelicans. just not more ducks please for the love of god
anemone pokemon. perhaps in addition to a clownfish pokemon
comb jelly pokemon! on that note, more deep sea and/or bioluminescent pokemon!
hold on is there EVEN a manatee pokemon? i cant believe they dont have a manatee pokemon yet. but they have at LEAST 3 evolutionary lines involving seals
above idea came to mind because i was thinking about more nautical myths/folklore pokemon. like they do have a couple mermaid-like pokemon but consider siren pokemon as well
PIRATES. PIRATE POKEMON?? do they not have pirate-themed pokemon?? ACTUALLY so many missed opportunities here oh my god
water/ghost pokemon that's a bunch of ghost fish trapped in a fishing net. or generally any kind of pokemon that highlights the need for ocean conservation
yk how they sometimes have pokemon that are like associated with each other. giant squid mon and sperm whale mon. would be so cool
i think i had one more idea but i forgor :(
i mean frankly maybe they (or SOMEone) should just make a pokemon game that takes place entirely on the water. help im getting ideas for this now too maybe they visit a bunch of seaside towns and islands they get to by boat instead of on land and the player does a bunch of diving to explore and catch new mons idk i love the water. anyway if anyone wants to either add their own ideas or make fakemon based on my list please feel free to i would love to see :D
dude they need to make more interesting water pokemon. they already have plenty of fish and seal and duck pokemon, i wanna see more variety
#pokemon#i dont know if thatll even help this be seen bc it's on a reblog but i'll just do that anyway ig

My store is open!!! UndeadLife graphic art pieces aren’t just about the black and white, you can color them into life. Find archival quality coloring prints on my store on Society6. They look amazing - they are printed on heavy, natural white, smooth, acid and lignin free 100% cotton rag. Graphics are uploaded 300+ dpi on a transparent background, so the ink is beautiful while the paper remains colorable. Color or paint your print and create an art piece you will feel a connection to. You can also find true black and white frameable art prints on the store. These are labeled as a Print as opposed to a Coloring Page (for example, "Life with An-Enemy - White Print” versus “Life with An-Enemy - Coloring Page"). Some art prints also come in color. I’ll continue to update the prints on the store as I post new ones here. You’ll also find some extras there that aren’t posted here yet, I hope you like them! One of my dreams has always been to help care for our ocean life and wildlife. I’m super excited to draw to help make a difference. With this Undead Ocean series, I am donating 10% of proceeds from each purchase to Oceana, a conservancy that recovers our overfished ocean life, cleans and protects ocean environments, and seeks to sustainably feed the hungry via balanced and thoughtful fishing strategies. Right now Society6 is having a 40% off site-wide sale on prints. If you order by December 14th, they will arrive before Christmas. Click here to check out the store and browse through. These are a few examples of what the prints look like when they come and what you can expect. Thank you so much for your support! - Elm

Swedish fact of the day;
One of Sweden's earlier kings was a pirate. Eric XIII of Sweden became king after the death of his grandaunt Margaret I, but he managed to annoy the Swedish nobles so much he had to flee to Gotland. There, he took over Visborg Castle. After all that was finished, and the Swedish nobles were completely done with him, he started a career as a pirate on the Baltic Sea to take revenge on the Swedish nobles.
