Pulsed Field Ablation: The Next Big Thing In Medical Device Technology

Advancements in medical device technology are helping doctors treat conditions in less invasive ways. One such innovation is pulsed field ablation (PFA), a new method for treating cardiac arrhythmias without the need for open-heart surgery. This cutting-edge technique uses pulsed electric fields to safely create precise non-thermal lesions in the heart muscle.

How Does PFA Work?

Pulsed Field Ablation works by delivering high-intensity electric pulses to targeted cardiac tissue through electrodes. These nanosecond pulses are able to penetrate cell membranes without causing irreversible electroporation, thereby ablating the tissue in a non-thermal manner. Its ability to create tailored, millimeter-sized lesions could help treat conditions like atrial fibrillation originating from multiple focal points in the heart muscle. Precisely targeting these areas is challenging with temperature-based radiofrequency ablation. 

PFA may also help defeat arrhythmias located near arteries, veins or conducting tissues where thermal energy risks unintended coagulation or vessel damage. The elimination of thermal effects makes it safer for treating arrhythmias very close to the esophagus as well. Its non-thermal mechanism could expand treatment eligibility for elderly patients or those with comorbidities precluding the heat effects of older ablation technologies.

Clinical Trial Results Are Promising 

Several medical technology companies are developing PFA systems and have initiated early human trials. Results so far have been very encouraging. In a 30-patient study of PFA for atrial fibrillation, symptoms were successfully eliminated in over 90% of participants with no serious adverse events. Follow-up showed the majority remained arrhythmia-free over a year later.

Another trial on 25 patients with recurrent ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation after heart attack also demonstrated strong efficacy and safety. Over 80% of participants saw complete resolution of their arrhythmia episodes post-ablation. Key investigators noted the consistent, homogenous lesions achieved with PFA were larger than anticipated and resulted in fewer treatment touches compared to standard radiofrequency ablation.

Regulatory Approval And Commercialization Plans

Given these positive results, manufacturers are working to seek regulatory clearances from the FDA and CE Mark approval in Europe over the next 1-2 years to commercially launch PFA systems. With approval, PFA could start replacing radiofrequency as the primary approach for most catheter ablations by 2025 according to analysts. Billing codes are also being established to ensure insurance coverage.

This innovation could be highly transformative for the multi-billion dollar cardiac ablation device  if large clinical trials confirm its advantages over legacy technologies. Hospitals stand to benefit from shorter procedure times, reduced complication risks and ability to treat more complex cases. For patients, PFA promises less invasive and more effective treatment of cardiac arrhythmias without the side effects of temperature-based ablation. Its arrival could help address the growing epidemic of atrial fibrillation worldwide.

Pulsed field ablation is an exciting new method for cardiac ablation that overcomes many limitations of existing temperature-based techniques. Early human data validates its superior safety profile and ability to precisely target arrhythmias. Regulatory clearances in the next two years should enable the commercial launch of PFA systems. as far as the public knows, there are four robins: family robin, crime alley robin, the female robin, and the assassin robin. only steph, bruce, and dick know about the forgotten robin, tim drake.

tim drake was the robin before steph, the one who pulled bruce out of his depressive pit and saving criminals a trip to the icu, but to steph, he is her best friend and the one she confided in. he found her as spoiler and convinced babs to take her under her wing. he helped her get the title of batgirl. her best friend.

until the joker kidnapped tim and he went missing. everyone scrambled to find him, but during those weeks, steph and bruce argued for hours on end.

one night, via thermal imaging, babs found the jokers dead body in the arkham ruins that they find tim, or what's left of him anyways. steph and bruce go together to check it out and are immediately horrified to see what they find: shock therapy equipment and plenty of serums. hair dye, bleach, and surgical tools are haphazardly discarded on a table near by. a gun was discarded several feet away from the jokers dead body, a bullet wound between his eyebrows.

steph tries to hold herself together as bruce rummages around the ruins to find tim, but eventually breaks when she sees remnants of the robin costume neatly folded on a table with restraints and the robin symbol on top. a post-it note was next to it.

to batgirl, i'm sorry. i am alive. joker junior --tim

she holds the costume close when she cries.

eventually, she takes up the robin mantel and using the journals tim left in drake manor, creates her own costume with alfred. she carefully stitched tim's robin symbol on the left side of her chest, over her heart.

the relationship between her and bruce is strained, but he falls into that depression pit once more, and using tim's methods, she dragged him out of it. they don't talk about tim, dick and babs keep quiet about it too.

five years later, she took up the spoiler mask again, and in charge of a series of murders involving electricity. after the fifth body is found in the arkham ruins and the signature "jj'", realization dawns on the four. everyone else is confused, and soon, steph and bruce are harshly exchanging words.

one night, tim makes contact, and the family begins to argue about what needs to happen. steph told damian she was borrowing robin and changed into the old uniform.

"we can't just send you out there steph," dick argued.

"you can and you will. i was robin when we first encountered junior," a half-lie. "i know him better than any of you, and bruce will just set him off."

"steph," bruce warned.

"you're not changing my mind bruce. i'm going to see hi m whether you like it or not."

"steph."

"no. you let him slip through the cracks last time, so it's my turn now. this isn't about you. this is about me. about jason. about babs. about robin." bruce's eyebrow twitched, his way of flinching. no other words are said when she uses the robin bike to zoom into the streets of gotham and to the meet up spot.

she sees tim on the rooftop with his hair grown out and slightly dyed blue. there were scars on his mouth line and he wore a tshirt with jeans. the reunion was bittersweet, a ton of crying and steph slapping him. she was just happy that he was safe ((after their crying sess, tim realizes she was wearing his design, and began crying again)).

As a fun way of competition for the spooky season, SOLDIER and the Turks are both ghost hunting in an attempt to see who can actually capture a real ghost or cryptid on camera as proof of which of the departments is the most bravest. Plot twist that it's mostly the two teams tricking the other with fake props and illusions in an attempt to scare the others into quitting.

Zack: Check out what we got for the "who can actually capture a real ghost on camera" competition with the Turks!

Angeal: Notice how you people never have a "who can actually finish they're work on time" competition.

Angeal: Ok, boot the camera up and let's get this over with.

*They all look into the camera and sure enough, there's an outline of a figure holding an axe at the end of the hallway*

Summary: Today we’ll get to look at the first client, John Price.

Notes: I should comment that I’m not sure if I want this to go in a platonic route or a romantic way so we’ll see from here. Might make the readers decide. <3

Part One. Client One: John Price.

The clack of your heels were heard through the halls as you smiled brightly, excited to get to know one of your new clients.

You had two sheets on a clipboard in your arms, a notepad in the other and a tote bag in your left arm.

You had some things you’d like to discuss with him, comforts, favorite snacks and tea. These are important you know! You always got the jitters when you had a new client.

Walking into your small office you sat your bag down on the side of your chair, and placed the clipboard and notepad neatly on your desk.

A sigh left your mouth and you rolled your neck around, trying to crack it and find relief.

“Mm.. ok, where to start..?” You mumbled to yourself as you looked at your bag and nodded.

Starting to unload everything you put your thermal cup filled with peppermint tea on your desk, a sketchbook, coloring book, and coloring pencils neatly into a pile.

Next you pressed the button on your work phone to hear all of your new voice mails and put lights on, in the dimly lit room.

You had two lamps that brightened the room with a nice yellow hue and a flower lamp on your desk that shined a pink light.

“Ms. Kate left a voice message, it says, ‘Good morning, you said 9:30 but we’ll be there a bit earlier than that. He’s adamant about being early to things. John is a very— He’s a man that likes to stay on the move you know? Keep that in mind. He likes his hands full. Anyways, see you around 9:20– 25. Thank you, Again.’ —”

You laughed at her comment, knowing well you like to have your hands full too and can’t stay doing nothing for too long.

The time on your clock stated 9:15, so they’d be here soon. There wasn’t much else you needed to set up in your cozy office but you decided to fluff out the pillows on the couch across from your desk and prep your notes.

Finally, after you killed some time drawing in your sketchbook you heard a knock on your door. There was quiet chatter.

“Come in please!” You called out, closing your sketchbook and looking up towards the door.

In walked in who you assumed was Kate Laswell and behind her was a handsome gruff looking man. He was very well built, a nice beard and mustache and he looked around the same age as the woman. He also had a nice ass but you shook your head away from those thoughts.

Standing up your walked around your desk and grinned widely, you stated your name and then, “It’s a pleasure to meet the both of you. I’m very excited for todays session if you couldn’t tell..”

“Nothing wrong with that. I’m hoping this goes smoothly.” The man, who you’re sure is John, smiles at you and nods approvingly.

“Yes, you won’t give her a hard time right?” Kate jokes and he shakes his head and raises his eyebrows.

“She should be worried about Soap. That man is a twat sometimes.” You chuckled along with him and waved your hand dismissing that.

You pointed to the couch and asked them to have a seat so you could talk to them about basics first and grabbed your notepad and a pen, sitting in your chair.

“Before we start, I want to re-introduce myself. My name is y/n, and I’ve been doing art therapy for three years. I have a degree in arts and a degree in counseling/therapy.” You waved your hands around as you talked.

Kate and John nodded at your words as you spoke and they seemed pretty impressed with what you said.

“Kate Laswell, John Price. It’s nice to meet someone enthusiastic like you.”

You smiled at the comment and then let the two settle in on the couch. Tapping your fingers in your desk you spoke again.

“Ok so, I’m sure you may have questions that you wanted to ask personally! Some worries and concerns?” You tilted your head to the side and smiled, “Or would you like me to give you a brief explanation on what I strive to achieve with art therapy?”

“It’s be nice if you explained it better.. I feel like this is too childish for a man like me.” John commented.

“Mhm, I understand what you mean. A lot of people believe that but it’s all about what works for YOU. Art is a form of expression that anyone can use. Why not incorporate that into helping others and finding yourself too, Hm?” You aided.

It was a bit silent in the room after what you said. John nodded his head, his arms crossed over his chest and pursed his lips, turning to face Kate.

“I like you. Hopefully the boys will too. God knows we need this type of energy with the line of work we’re involved in.” Kate sighs, “I’ll take my leave, and be back around.. 10:30?”

“Yes! 10:30 or you can come around 10:25. Either works for me, If it works for you,” You got up and extended your hand, “Thank you, by the way. I live my life as optimistic as possible and like to bring that into the workplace.”

Kate nods and shakes your hand. Her hold is firm and strong, she’s a kind woman.

“John, play nice.” She said, facing the older man, before leaving and giving you a smile.

After she left you looked at Price and clapped your hands together.

“Well, now I have some personal questions for you. These are about boundaries but I hope you do know we might have to cross them once in a while ok?” You sat on top of your desk this time moving your notepad and pen onto your lap.

John folded his hands on his lap and looked at you in your eyes. It was silent for a moment yet again, though you didn’t mind. If he needed time to formulate his words you’d give him all the time in the world.

He opened his mouth then closed it, with a huff he said, “There’s not many boundaries I have, I’m sure you’re supposed to start slow when doing these sessions, yea?” you nodded, “So I believe you won’t be asking too much about me yet, so when the time comes.. I’ll be somewhat of an open book.”

He smiled at you slightly, tight lipped and tapped his fingers against his knuckles.

You took a breath in, then let it out. Humming at his words you write down on your note pad:

‘Price. Little to no boundaries at all. Open book maybe by the third sesh.’

His eyes watch your fingers as you’re writing, he’s a bit tense, not really knowing what to do. He can already imagine Simon being worse than he is right now.

“Ok so! I do have a question that Ms.Kate didn’t really specify, and I forgot to ask. Is there a problem that’s bugging any of you? Or is this just to maintain a good mind set— or close to an ok mind set?” You put your hands out, trying to elaborate in a more understanding way, “For example, keeping your anger in check, having an outlet to let out heavy emotional burdens.. those types of things?”

John ran his fingers through his beard and tapped his foot on the ground, thinking on what you said. He didn’t exactly have any thing bugging him, he’s been working in the military for well around 18+ years and that’ll get you used to the atrocities you see.

“I’m pretty sure Kate had the latter in mind when doing these sessions. I know I don’t have much bugging me, I’m about ready to retire sometimes,” he joked with a laugh, “It’d be nice to have an outlet from what we do every now and then.”

You laughed with him and nodded your head. His words resonated well with you. Anyone knew that working in the military/army would drain you. Could leave you mentally unwell after years.

So you strived to understand and learn each and every one of these men. To hopefully be able to aid them in different, helpful ways.

“Well, im glad you think so! Now, I actually have something I want you to do today. It’s very simple.”

Pulling out a coloring book and some color pencils, you held them out in front of you, “So, we won’t be doing anything too big— yet! I have a coloring book here that goes based off of mood. It’s also a journal. I want you to write in this everyday, starting today, ok?”

John raised his brows at you and you raised yours back. He scratched his beard and looked down at the coloring book with different mood faces on it. He took a copy of one book and a pack of coloring pencils you offered after.

You opened up the book to the first page and pointed to the happy face. Underneath the face were lines and a quote that asks you why you were feeling the emotion you were feeling.

“Currently I’m feeling happy, I’ll take a yellow pencil and color that face in.” You explained simply, “I’m feeling this way because I’ve had my favorite tea, my cat cuddled with me this morning, and I’m looking forward to my new clients.”

Once you finished you turned the book around and showed John. “That’s all you have to do. Nothing too long, but if you prefer to do that I don’t mind. Just don’t give me a word or two. I want one to three sentences.”

You watched as he began to do what you did. He colored in the neutral face with a brown colored pencil and underneath he wrote two sentences explaining why he felt that way.

For the rest of your session you introduced yourself more and had him give you tid bits about his life and line of work. In your mind you wanted to have this space be as personal but comfortable as possible.

You talked a bit about your life as well, giving him insight into your day to day life and how your other sessions go sometimes without disclosing private information about your other clients.

Soon enough the time came to when he had to leave and your session ended.

As Kate waited by the door, you put your hand out towards John, “I hope to see that book filled out. If anything is bothering you after today, write it down and we can go over it, yea?” He nodded his head shaking your hand, and let out a gruff ‘yes’.

He left with that and you were alone in your office thinking over this mornings events. It was slow paced and simple. You didn’t like unpacking a lot of information on the first day. Over time they’d get more comfortable and the art part of this would help them express how they felt without speaking. Actions are always far bigger than words.

You cracked your knuckles and went back to your chair, looking through your schedule planner, tomorrow you’d have a man by the name of Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley.

Huh, what a name.

Official name: Killer 2.0. Bounty posters call him Metal Man Killer. Marines considered him a new pirate, so he had to start his bounty from scratch, and as such is no longer considered a Supernova

Built by Kid to deal with his grief after Killer dies. Android contains his brain, retrieved from his original body after it took too much damage to support life

If you see posts with him interacting with original Killer its cos its just a fun lighthearted alternate timeline where Kid just built him as a replacement just in case. Don't ask me how he gave it Killer's personality, those posts are just for the giggles

Uses his original mask (repaired and restored) as headpiece. Lights have been installed in the holes to fill the gaps and hide the underlying electronics and brain

Helmet contains lenses for vision. Equiped with higher level vision such as nightvision, thermal imagining and xray

Aerial on side of helmet allows for better hearing as well as allowing others to communicate with him directly via den-den

Just as strong and agile as he was in his human body, though it did take a lot of physical rehab to get used to the mechanical body

Metal sections made from high quality metals making him essentially bullet proof

Basically, he's a purpose built super soldier

Water resistant, but not submerge safe. Kid is a skilled engineer, but hes no Vegapunk. Killer 2.0 can not submerge his chest section, or his systems will fail to work, and much like a devil fruit user he would sink like a stone. He can be pulled out and repaired, his brain is well protected, but he can't save himself

Chest, abdomen and buttocks are squishy, imagine the texture/firmness of those silicone chicken fillets you use to make your tits look bigger

Has a cock that's essentially a dildo that can emerge from a slit in the rubber between his legs, and yes it can vibrate

He can feel touch on most of his body, though mostly it just feels like pressure, he's basically a touch lamp, but Kid had Franky help him wire some parts to feel more, such as his hands and dick, allowing for pleasure, though he doesn't really have the ability to 'finish'. He can recieve an artificial boost of hormones to simulate pleasure and satisfaction but thats as close as it gets

Why did Kid give him a dick? Because he's a good friend, that's why totally no other reason

No mouth or asshole though, bit of an oversight on Kid's part tbh

Doesn't actually plug his hair in to sleep, those cables are entirely just scrap for show, hastily spraypainted to replicate Killer's hair. He does get plugged in to charge, but his cable comes out of the panel on of of his hands (both hands have charging cables for convenience so he can use whichever side is easier)

Lights flash when he's on charge because Kid stole the wiring and coding from some random electronic. He regrets it every fucking night.

Spends a lot of time oiling and polishing his hair cables and touching up the paint, it's sort of a force of habit but mostly it makes him feel more normal. Ties his hair up with zipties sometimes.

Serious mental health issues. I mean come on, the dude went through all the Wano bullshit, literally fucking died, and now he's not even human. Please someone get him some therapy. Sometimes uses his old lipstick to draw a big smile on his mask when he's having a mental breakdown.

Still loves to cook, but now he has to have a taste tester with him because he has no capacity to eat or taste

Kid obsessively does maintenance on him every single day because he can't bear to lose him again

Kid also needs therapy. This whole android situation is a cry for help tbh

Kid did his best to replicate Killer's voice, but there's something electronic and uncanny about it

Hello,

I'm not a burn survivor myself so I'll talk about facial differences in general and link some stuff that might be more specific to your question.

First thing that I noticed about this ask is the wording - calling a facial difference "nasty". Which some people do say about themselves, but I discourage authors who aren't part of the FD community to use that in a neutral setting because it's not a neutral term. Facial differences, including scars, burns, craniofacial conditions, and every other difference aren't ugly, gross, or anything of that sort. Your character does have a large and noticeable burn, true! But he doesn't have anything "nasty" on his face. Neither do real life people with FD who might not want to read about a character looking like them or people from their community being referred to as "nasty" as a state-of-fact neutral descriptor.

To know what to include, you should research the medical side of burns; what kind of burn it is (chemical/thermal/electrical/other? they can cause different symptoms), what exactly is affected and how much (feeling, mobility) and how to care for burns long term (like preventing infections, pain management or physical/occupational therapy). Knowing how burns work outside of being a visual difference will make it more realistic. Researching (referencing) images of actual burn survivors might also be helpful to see how the skin might look like and interact with the rest of the person's face outside just being a different color (compare: a flat port wine stain and a burn scar).

Soo something I just found out after talking to C//hatG//PT for some nom scenarios and well one of the things it explained during the time was how just right of a temperature of warmth to soothe sore muscles and aches but the heat could also encourage faster healing, Like a natural sauna or thermal therapy

What if pharmacy companies believe both that they will be capable of using gene therapy to render people artificially dependent on their proprietary products and that they will be allowed to do so? Like, good job, asshole, you bought your kid better stats, now he'll need to take expensive patented medicine every few hours for the rest of his life or his body will shut down

I think one of the big things we learned during 2014-2022 (and there was a lot to learn from observation) is that states are more powerful than corporations. Yes, corporations can influence states with lobbying, but political power can overcome corporate officers just as corporate money can influence state officers.

I don't believe that major governments (US, EU, China, Japan, etc) would allow a corporation to create a life-saving gene therapy that arbitrarily requires a daily drug. For left-wing parties, it would be a great issue to campaign on if someone were to do it (very easy gains), and for right-wing parties, it's much more straightforward to have the recipient of the gene therapy take out a loan for the up-front price of the treatment. Remember, Republicans already signed laws against direct genetic discrimination - it's simply too annoying.

The thing about conventional gene therapy is that it does not require maintenance the way that artificial implants do. The maintenance requirement for "hard tech" implants makes ongoing deals politically more tenable, especially since the company going under can end up requiring expensive (and potentially damaging) removal surgery.

Notes:

The biggest value-adds for "cybernetic implants" are life-saving healthcare and chronic health condition management. You can move faster through the environment, lift heavier objects, and fly, by using vehicles, without the medical-tier reliability requirements and maintenance costs of implantable technology.

Additionally, the ability of law enforcement to confiscate things like forklifts or thermal vision goggles means that they have options to capture and restrain you other than either a titanium cage or a non-consensual implant removal surgery.
