Toady Rambles, Vol. II

Tonight you raised your knife above my head, your fingers clamped around my jaw to let its sparkling silver drip onto my tongue. From that angle I could see the whole of your life’s trajectory, and the place where you cut yourself shaving.

It was a stunning tableau, I imagine; me on my knees, confessional. You and the blade you wielded like nothing—your tastes always did run Medieval. Our oath of fealty would have been one for the ages.

Knight me in the morning, and I’ll be relentless in your defense.

Tonight you laid your hands on my head—I’d like to think I crossed your mind as you did—and I’ve never seen anything so holy, never been so holy myself, as when your fingertips rang hollow against my skull.

Neither of us is doomed, I know; you don’t care to have me condemned, and I don’t expect you to. Lord knows I’d make a sorry pillar of salt anyway.

Somewhere along the path of my spinal column, where your thumb dragged along my skin at last week’s dinner party, I am blessed with the knowledge that you could never lead me anywhere without turning back to look at me.

I can’t say the same, personally. You’re real to me even when I can’t see you. Even when you do your best to make sure of it. You’ve never been more alive to me than in those moments, when I let you creep up from behind and breathe your bullshit against my neck. When you dig your talons into the thin skin of my eye sockets and squeeze the sight from me like nectar, and ask me to Guess Who as if it could be anyone but you, beloved. You spare me the punishment of looking, your dazzling corpse my inevitable demise, and I love you because you do it all for me.

Tonight you left your signature on me in the form of smeared viscera trailing from empty sockets, my Coppelius, and there’s so much light now that you’ve let it in. I think, if I angle my skull just right, the sun will hit my brain, and everything will be warm again.

That in order to relieve themselves of guilt and discomfort, white people create and believe narratives that deprive their European ancestors of any autonomy whatsoever. Casting their ancestors as victims of the church rather than active participants.

#three things to keep in mind:#1 a lot of christianization was peaceful in europe. my german and irish ancestors willingly converted.#european christianization was nothing like the colonization of the americas (as supported by the church)#2 most supposedly ''pagan'' traditions reach back maybe reach back to the middle ages. long after christianization happened #so most ''pagan'' traditions are really just folk beliefs created and maintained by christians #(there really wasn't a huge distinguishment between ''pagan'' and ''christian'' most of the time)#3 most of these narratives about the church stealing from paganism comes from puritans and victorians #who both uhhh literally loved to make up history
